When females ofTrichogramma pretiosum Riley were confined with host eggs at a density of 2/150 eggs, they produced 12 times more female progeny on eggs of potato tuber moth than on eggs ofHeliothis armigera (Hübner) and 13,6 times more on eggs ofSitotroga cerealella (Olivier) than on eggs ofHeliothis. At a density of 4/150 eggs, the correspondent figures were 13 and 8 times. The percentage emergence fromHeliothis eggs was from 0,29 to 0,14 times as great as from tuber moth orSitotroga. From 15 to 140 times more runts were observed amongTrichogramma fromHeliothis eggs than among those from tuber moth eggs and 8 times more thant among those fromSitotroga eggs. This may explain the low recoveries in South Africa ofT. pretiosum in eggs ofH. armigera collected in cotton fields after mass liberation of the parasite. An increase in parasite density from 1/300 eggs to 16/300 eggs resulted in a decrease from 29 to 14 in the hosts parasitised per female, a decrease in the proportion of female progeny from 72 to 39%, a decrease in the female progeny per female from 18 to 4,8, and an increase in the proportion of runts from 2,4 to 12,4%. It is suggested that in mass culture ofTrichogramma unduly high parasite densities should be avoided in order to reduce the effect of mutual interference and raise the output of female progeny.  相似文献

The eggs of Haemaphysalis longicornis, Ixodes holocydus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus were exposed to a range of temperatures and humidities to compare the temperature and humidity requirements of ticks from climatically dissimilar habitats. The response to changes in humidity was also studied with H. longicornis. Hatching in I. holocydus eggs occurred from 18 to 28°C and at a saturation deficit of 2 mm Hg or less. The eggs of R. sanguineus hatched between 18 and 38°C and tolerated saturation deficits up to 20 mm Hg. The eggs of H. longicornis hatched between 18 and 35°C and at saturation deficits up to 8 mm Hg. When eggs of H. longicornis were exposed to moderately dry conditions for different periods of time and then transferred to moist conditions, incubation periods and mortality were reduced in comparison with eggs kept continuously under dry conditions. On the other hand, mortality of H. longicornis eggs was reduced in moderately dry conditions, provided that they had been exposed to a moist environment for about 10 days previously. Weight loss of eggs in dry air and the rate of development of eggs were examined and are discussed. The eggs of I. holocylus lost weight very rapidly in dry air, whereas weight loss from R. sanguineus eggs was much slower. Weight loss from H. longicornis eggs fell between these two rates. The rate of development was fastest in R. sanguineus and slowest in I. holocydus.  相似文献

Storing the eggs of T. pisiformis for periods of 0 to 9 days at a temperature of 36–38°C and relative humidity of 87–93 % revealed at least 4 stages in the ageing process. Firstly, a stage in which eggs hatched and activated in vitro and were also fully infective for rabbits. Secondly, a stage in which eggs hatched and activated in vitro but underwent only partial development in rabbits. Thirdly, a stage in which eggs hatched and activated in vitro, and presumably therefore in vivo, but no evidence of infection could be found when they were fed to rabbits. Fourthly, a stage in which eggs either did not hatch, or if they did hatch, the oncosphere was rapidly digested. In vitro techniques for assessing viability of T. pisiformis eggs were not a reliable guide to their infectivity for rabbits. ‘Senescent’ eggs, that is eggs which produced evidence of early infection in rabbits but did not complete their development to cysticerci, failed to produce immunity to challenge infection with T. pisiformis eggs.  相似文献

The content of glycolytic intermediates and of adenine nucleotides was measured in eggs of the echiuroid, Urechis unicinctus and the oyster, Crassostrea gigas, before and after fertilization. On the whole, the profile of the change in each glycolytic intermediate in Urechis eggs upon fertilization was found to be essentially similar to that in oyster eggs. Calculation of the mass action ratio for each glycolytic step from the amounts of glycolytic intermediates determined suggests that there are at least three limiting enzymes in the glycolysis system in unfertilized and fertilized eggs of each species examined. Phosphorylase (EC 2.4.1.1), phosphofructokinase (EC 2.7.1.11), and pyruvate kinase (EC 2.7.1.40) may be rate-limiting enzymes for the glycolysis system in Urechis eggs as well as in oyster eggs. These enzymes are thought to be activated upon fertilization, though even the reactions of the enzymes in fertilized eggs do not reach a state of equilibrium. In eggs of Urechis and oyster, phosphorylase is the first enzyme to be activated following fertilization. In Urechis eggs, pyruvate kinase is activated after the instant increase in the phosphorylase activity upon fertilization, followed by phosphofructokinase activation. In oyster eggs, however, pyruvate kinase and phosphofructokinase seem to be stimulated simultaneously, subsequent to phosphorylase activation upon fertilization. The mechanism controlling phosphorylase and pyruvate kinase activity is unknown, but the phosphofructokinase activity in both species may be regulated by the intracellular concentration of adenine nucleotides, since the enzyme activity is enhanced along with a decline in the phosphate potential in the eggs of both Urechis and of oyster.  相似文献

The striped stem borer, Chilo suppressalis (Walker), is one of the most economically important rice pests worldwide. However, biological control of this pest using natural-enemy insects has been rarely documented to date. With the objective of screening suitable candidate species for controlling the striped stem borer, we investigated the effect of the age of host eggs on the host selection and suitability by four indigenous Trichogramma species on their native host, C. suppressalis. The results indicated that the differently aged eggs of C. suppressalis were all accepted by T. japonicum, T. dendrolimi and T. chilonis, and there was a clear tendency to parasitize older eggs less under no-choice and choice conditions. The number of parasitized host eggs by T. ostriniae also decreased with the increasing host age in the no-choice test, but more 2-day-old host eggs were parasitized in the choice test. When 0-, 2-day-old eggs were offered, T. dendrolimi, T. japonicum and T. chilonis exhibited similar parasitism ability, whereas T. ostriniae appeared to have a stronger ability to attack the older host eggs (4-day-old). Trichogramma japonicum developed and emerged on parasitized C. suppressalis eggs of all ages tested, while showing a better adaptation to younger host eggs with significantly faster developmental time, higher survival and more female progeny on 0-day-old eggs. No adults for each of the other three Trichogramma species emerged from parasitized 4-day-old host eggs, and they had similar developmental time, survival and female progeny on parasitized 0-, 2-day-old host eggs with an exception of female progeny for T. chilonis. On 0-day-old host eggs, T. japonicum developed faster and T. ostriniae had lower progeny survival than the other three Trichogramma species evaluated, respectively. The current study provides useful information to select suitable Trichogramma species for controlling the striped stem borer, C. suppressalis.  相似文献

Fungal parasitism of eggs of the potato cyst nematode Globodera rostochiensis was < 1, 3, and 17% at three sites in Sweden. The fungi isolated most frequently from infected eggs were a Septocylindrium-like fungus ( 19 %), Exophiala spp. (17 %), and Cylindrocarpon spp. (13 %). Verticillium suchtasporium was isolated from infected eggs at a low frequency (4%). In laboratory experiments V. suchlasporium infected 93% of the eggs within cysts after 10 days on dilute corn meal agar. This species showed chitinase and protease activity. Infection of eggs by the Septocylindrium-like fungus was moderate, whereas Cylindrocarpon destructans and Cladosporium cladosporoides did not infect eggs. No chitinase activity was found in these fungi, but protease activity was recorded in all. Growth of the fungi in cysts did not influence the number of physiologically disordered eggs.  相似文献

Aquaculture has brought about increased interest in mass production of marine fish larvae. Problems such as poor egg quality and mass mortality of fish larvae have been prevalent. The intensive incubation techniques that often result in bacterial overgrowth on fish eggs could affect the commensal relationship between the indigenous microflora and opportunistic pathogens and subsequently hamper egg development, hatching, larval health, and ongrowth. Little information about the adherent microflora on fish eggs is available, and the present study was undertaken to describe the microbial ecology during egg development and hatching of two fish species of potential commercial importance in marine aquaculture. Attachment and development of the bacterial flora on cod (Gadus morhua L.) eggs from fertilization until hatching was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The adherent microflora on cod (G. morhua L.) and halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) eggs during incubation was characterized and grouped by cluster analysis. Marked bacterial growth could be demonstrated 2 h after fertilization, and at hatching eggs were heavily overgrown. Members of the genera Pseudomonas, Alteromonas, Aeromonas, and Flavobacterium were found to dominate on the surface of both cod and halibut eggs. The filamentous bacterium Leucothrix mucor was found on eggs from both species. While growth of L. mucor on halibut eggs was sparse, cod eggs with a hairy appearance due to overgrowth by this bacterium close to hatching were frequently observed. Vibrio fischeri could be detected on cod eggs only, and pathogenic vibrios were not detected. Members of the genera Moraxella and Alcaligenes were found only on halibut eggs. Caulobacter and Seliberia spp. were observed attached to eggs dissected from cod ovaries under sterile conditions, indicating the presence of these bacteria in ovaries before spawning. Adherent strains did not demonstrate antibiotic resistance above a normal level. Attempts to regulate the egg microflora by incubation of gnotobiotic eggs with defined antibiotic-producing strains did not result in persistent protection against subsequent colonization by the microflora of the incubator.  相似文献

The establishment of Globodera rostochiensis Rol populations was examined under greenhouse conditions. The probability of G. rostochiensis population establishment was calculated from the number of plants that produced new cysts with viable eggs following inoculation with various numbers of eggs of different ages. Probability of population establishment was positively correlated with inoculum density but was not affected by the age of eggs used in these experiments. The probability of G. rostochiensis establishment ranged from 5% at densities of 2 eggs/pot to 100% at densities of 25 eggs/pot or greater. At densities of 3 eggs/pot and beyond, there was no correlation between inoculum density and the number of viable eggs/new cyst. Also, the number of plants that produced new cysts was a function of inoculum density and not age of eggs. Juveniles from eggs 1 year old or older were equally as infective as were those from eggs in newly developed cysts (4 months old).  相似文献

Hatching studies with Heterodera glycines typically have been conducted with a mixture of egg-mass and encysted eggs. Laboratory research was conducted to compare hatching of H. glycines eggs from external egg masses with that of eggs extracted from within females and cysts (encysted eggs). Egg-mass eggs were collected by soaking infected soybean roots in 0.5% sodium hypochlorite, and encysted eggs were collected from females and cysts dislodged from the same roots with a stream of water. Eggs were incubated at 25 °C in deionized water, 3.0 mM ZnSO₄solution, or one of three synthetic H. glycines hatch inhibitors, mad hatched juveniles were counted every other day for 22 days. Samples of eggs collected at the beginning and end of all experiments were analyzed to determine extent of embryo development. Egg-mass eggs hatched more rapidly than encysted eggs during the first 16 days, but not thereafter. Throughout the experiments, hatch of egg-mass eggs in deionized water was greater than that of encysted eggs. From day 8 to day 22, egg-mass eggs were less sensitive than encysted eggs to the hatch inhibitor 2-(2''-carboxyethyl)-5-[carboxy(hydroxy)methylidenyl]cyclopentanone. A greater proportion of egg-mass eggs contained vermiform juveniles than did encysted eggs at the beginning of the experiments, but not at the end. Results indicated that H. glycines egg-mass and encysted eggs have different hatching behaviors that cannot be explained entirely by differences in embryological development.  相似文献

Gonatocerus morrilli (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) is an egg parasitoid used in California, USA to control glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS), Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae). Virgin GWSS females deposit non-fertilized eggs and mated females can exhaust sperm reserves for egg fertilization. However, nothing is known about Gonatocerus spp. performance when using non-fertilized GWSS eggs as hosts. Host age preference for oviposition and suitability of non-fertilized GWSS eggs as hosts for G. morrilli reproduction were investigated to determine whether non-fertilized eggs on sentinel plants could be used to monitor egg parasitoid populations. Gonatocerus morrilli parasitized all ages of GWSS eggs (1–8 days old) regardless if the host egg was fertilized or not. In choice tests (fertilized versus non-fertilized eggs), parasitoids failed to emerge as adults from non-fertilized eggs more often than from fertilized eggs. The results indicate that non-fertilized eggs were accepted by G. morrilli as suitable hosts for oviposition, but were less suitable for immature development compared to fertilized eggs.  相似文献

During spawning, eggs of echinoids are released from the gonad and traverse a narrow oviduct-gonopore complex before being released into the water surrounding the spawning female. As the eggs traverse the oviduct-gonopore complex, a velocity gradient develops within the fluid formed by the eggs. This velocity gradient imposes a shear stress on the eggs that ranges from a maximal value at the walls of the oviduct-gonopore complex and declines linearly to zero at the center of the complex. In addition to shear stress, the eggs of some echinoids also experience strain. Strain is imposed on the eggs in situations where the diameter of the egg is greater than the diameter of the oviduct-gonopore complex. Both shear stress and strain have the potential to damage echinoid eggs during spawning and are likely selective pressures acting on the physical properties of protective extracellular layers, which surround the eggs of these organisms. The amounts of shear stress and strain experienced by eggs of a geminate pair of echinoids, Echinometra vanbrunti and E. lucunter, are calculated. Calculations of shear stress based on the mean spawning rates and dimensions of the oviduct-gonopore complexes of specimens collected during this study ranged up to 30 Pa for E. vanbrunti and up to 17 Pa for E. lucunter. To obtain conservative estimates of shear stress, these calculations were repeated incorporating a spawning rate that was reduced by one order of magnitude below the mean rate measured for both species. These calculations yielded shear stresses that ranged up to 13 and 6 Pa for E. vanbrunti and E. lucunter, respectively. The diameter of the oviduct-gonopore complex of echinoids increases linearly with the diameter of the tests of the adults. Because the diameter of the oviduct-gonopore complex influences the amount of shear stress experienced by eggs of echinoids, shear stress calculations were repeated incorporating the full range of potential diameters of the oviduct-gonopore complexes from data in the literature. Using the mean spawning rates obtained from each species, the amount of shear stress experienced by eggs ranged up to 32 Pa for E. vanbrunti and up to 398 Pa for E. lucunter. When the mean spawning rates were reduced by one order of magnitude, the amount of shear stress experienced by E. vanbrunti eggs ranged up to 14 Pa and up to 140 Pa for the eggs of E. lucunter. The eggs of E. vanbrunti do not experience strain during spawning because the diameter of the its eggs is smaller than the diameter of its oviduct-gonopore complex at all stages of adult growth. In contrast, the diameter of the eggs of E. lucunter is larger than the diameter of the oviduct-gonopore complex at small adult sizes and the eggs of this species experience true strains ranging up to 1.2. These results indicate that there are substantial differences in the amounts of physical forces that the eggs of echinoids experience during spawning both within species at different stages of adult growth and between species. Different amounts of shear stress and strain experienced by eggs among echinoid species may select for differences in the mechanical properties of protective extracellular layers that surround them.  相似文献

Globodera spp. eggs go through a diapause, which remains dormant until favorable hatching conditions are reached. Because of the regulatory concerns with cyst nematodes, it is often only possible to rear eggs for research in the greenhouse. However, hatch is often lower for greenhouse-produced eggs than for eggs obtained from the field. The goal of this research was to determine storage conditions for Globodera ellingtonae eggs produced in the greenhouse that would increase percentage hatch. Over 3 yr, G. ellingtonae greenhouse-produced eggs were stored in different environments (−20°C, 4°C, room temperature, and the field) in either dry or moist soil. Percentage hatch after exposure to the different environments was determined in potato root diffusate. Across two experiments, field-produced eggs had higher hatch rates (65.2%) than greenhouse-produced eggs (10.4%). Temperature did not have an appreciable influence on hatch of eggs stored dry in two experiments (2.8% to 8.4% and 3.8% to 8.6%), but hatch of eggs stored in moist soil was significantly higher than in dry soil at all temperatures except −20°C (26.8% and 28.7%). However, the ability of G. ellingtonae greenhouse-, microplot-, and field-produced eggs to reproduce on potato in field microplots was not different. Although it may not be possible to produce G. ellingtonae eggs in the greenhouse that have the magnitude of hatch as those produced in the field, hatching can be greatly increased by storing eggs in moist soil at either 4°C or room temperature.  相似文献

Morphology, production rate and hatching success of the eggs spawned by Acartia steueri from Sagami Bay, Japan were examined from November 2000 to December 2001. A. steueri produced two morphological types of egg. One with a smooth surface (smooth egg) and the other with branched spines on the envelope (spiny egg). Abundance of adult A. steueri increased from April to June 2001, and then decreased from July 2001. Adult A. steueri were low in abundance between August and October 2001, then increased in November 2001. Smooth eggs were produced through out the study period, while spiny eggs were produced during restricted periods from March to July 2001. Six of thirteen females produced both smooth and spiny eggs within 24 h. All the smooth eggs hatched within 48 h, like the so-called subitaneous eggs. Spiny eggs that did not hatch within the time determined by the Bělehrádek's temperature function of egg development time plus 24 h were categorized as diapausing eggs. In the present study, A. steueri seems to survive by utilizing egg dormancy during the period of environmental adversity, and produced two physiologically different types of eggs. This may be why A. steueri dominants in temperate coastal waters where environmental conditions vary drastically.  相似文献

Endoparasitic Hymenoptera vary in the extent to which they provision their eggs and thus in the degree to which they appear to rely on their hosts for resources during embryonic development. In this study, developmental rates were examined in two congeneric parasitoid species, Encarsia formosa and E. pergandiella, that provision their eggs to different degrees. E. formosa eggs are much larger than E. pergandiella eggs. E. formosa eggs hatch significantly earlier than the eggs of E. pergandiella when deposited in 1st or 4th instar nymphs of a common whitefly host, Bemisia tabaci. Both species hatch earlier in 4th instar nymphs, but the delay in hatching in hosts parasitized as 1st instars is much greater in E. pergandiella. While E. formosa develops more rapidly to the 1st larval instar, E. pergandiella emerge as adults significantly earlier, though smaller, than E. formosa adults regardless of the host instar parasitized. These findings show that the extent of provisioning in the eggs of these wasps does not strictly determine their order of progression through different stages of development.  相似文献

The species status ofDermacentor marginatus andDermacentor reticulatus was evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination of adult ticks, cross-breeding experiments and molecular biological analysis of eggs derived from transspecific pairings. The SEM investigations including the morphometric quantification of phenotypic features, resulted in an unequivocal differentiation of adultD. marginatus andD. reticulatus ticks. The cross-breeding experiments demonstrated that irrespective of whether female ticks of both species were applied with con- or transspecific male ticks or without males to sheep, they engorged and laid eggs. The larvae, however, developed only in eggs which originated from conspecific matings. A nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) using the DNA of eggs from transspecific pairings and sequencing of the PCR products revealed two different genotypes. The genotypes of eggs originating fromD. marginatus andD. reticulatus females of these pairings differed. However, the eggs deposited byD. marginatus always possessed the same two genotypes as did the eggs produced byD. reticulatus. These results argue for a strict reproductive isolation ofD. marginatus andD. reticulatus and, therefore, for a separate species status.  相似文献

The eggs of one proturan and two representatives of Collembola (Heteromurus nitidus and Hypogastrura succinea) were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The proturan (Eosentomon) eggs are covered by 2 envelopes. The surface of the outer one is equipped with numerous hemispherical projections. The eggs of H. nitidus possess an envelope, which is studded with numerous granules. In H. succinea, eggs are covered with 2 envelopes. The outer is studded with characteristic complex structures. Neither micropyles nor aeropyles were observed in either proturan or collembolan eggs.  相似文献

Six species of scelionid egg-parasites of several species of pentatomids including the major coffee pestsAntestiopsis spp. were used for rearing experiments in eggs of species other than their normal host. One species,Gryon antestiae (Dodd), laid in eggs of 4 genera of pentatomids and bred satisfactorily in eggs of 3 of them. Although the normal host of this parasite isAntestiöpsis experiments showed thatAgonoscelis versicolor (F.) is also a very satisfactory host, but though these pentatomids are sympatric the parasite has never been recorded fromAgonoscelis in the field. Experiments withTelenomus seychellensis Kieffer andGryon antestiae showed that they could breed satisfactorily in unfertilized eggs ofAntestiopsis and as these eggs remain in good condition long after fertilized eggs have hatched this must be a factor contributing to the maintenance of parasite populations in the field.  相似文献

In commercial hatcheries, it is common to store eggs before incubation. One practice to improve hatchability consists in egg turning during this storage. This work aims to highlight the effects of turning on the physicochemical aspects of eggs and, consequently, how this turning can influence the hatching of chicks. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of storage duration and egg turning during storage on egg quality, hatchability, and residual analysis. A total of 7 500 hatching eggs were collected from a 55-week-old commercial Cobb500 breeder flock and storage according to the treatments. The experiment was completely randomized in a 3 × 2 factorial design with three storage periods (4, 8, and 12 days) and egg turning (180° turn of eggs once a day) or no turning during storage, totaling six treatments. Regardless of turning, eggs stored for 4 days weighed more than turned eggs stored for 8 and 12 days, which were similar (P < 0.05). Non-turned eggs experienced an increase in relative shell weight with increased storage duration, and non-turned eggs stored for 4 and 8 days differed from non-turned eggs stored for 12 days (P < 0.05). Albumen pH of turned eggs stored for 4 and 8 days was lower than that of non-turned eggs stored for the same durations (P < 0.05). Albumen pH of turned eggs increased as storage duration increased (P < 0.05). Egg turning increased hatching by 2.02% over that of non-turning (P < 0.05). Eggs stored for 12 days, irrespective of turning, had higher late embryonic mortality (P < 0.05) compared to the other treatments. It was concluded that turning eggs during pre-incubation storage was adequate to improve hatchability of fertile eggs. Storing fertile eggs for 12 days is harmful to egg quality and increases embryo mortality even if eggs were turned.  相似文献

The effect of multiple immersions on Haemagogus janthinomys , Haemagogus leucocelaenus , Aedes albopictus and Ochlerotatus terrens eggs was studied. Eggs were collected in April, June, October and December of 2011 in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Most of the Aedes and Ochlerotatus eggs hatched upon the first immersion, while Haemagogus eggs showed a varied instalment hatching response. The number of immersions required for hatching increased for eggs collected closer to the dry winter season.  相似文献
