1. In many fig wasp species, armoured wingless males regularly engage in lethal fights for access to females inside figs, which act as discrete mating patches. 2. Kin selection generally opposes killing brothers, because their reproductive success provides indirect genetic benefits (inclusive fitness). However, siblicide may be avoided if (i) brothers do not occur in the same figs, or (ii) males avoid fighting brothers in the same fig. Alternatively, (iii) siblicide may occur because intense mate competition between brothers at the local scale overcomes kin selection effects, or (iv) males do not recognise kin. 3. A fig may also contain wasps from other closely related species and it is not known if males also fight with these individuals. 4. Nine microsatellite loci were used in the first genetic analysis of fighting in fig wasps. We assigned species and sibling identities to males and tested alternative fighting scenarios for three Sycoscapter wasp species in figs of Ficus rubiginosa. 5. Approximately 60% of figs contained males from more than one Sycoscapter species and approximately 80% of fights were between conspecifics, but a surprising 20% were between heterospecific males. 6. Within species, few figs contained brothers, suggesting that females typically lay one son per fig. Overall, most males do not compete with brothers and all fights observed were between unrelated males.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of the flower volatiles of 10 day-flowering Silene species native to Central Europe was made to improve the understanding of the pollination biology and evolution of floral odours in the genus. Floral scent was collected by dynamic headspace adsorption and analysed via gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. In total, 60 compounds could be identified by their mass spectra as well as by their relative retention times. The number of compounds per species ranged between 16 in Silene rupestris and 40 in S. viscaria. Main compounds in most species were fatty acid derivatives (FADs, cis-3-hexen-1-ol, cis-3-hexenyl acetate, n-nonanal), benzenoids (benzaldehyde, phenylacetaldehyde, methyl benzoate), and monoterpenes (limonene, linalool), accompanied by sesquiterpenes, and nitrogen-containing compounds.Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (CNESS, NMDS) based on relative amounts of single components leads to the same conclusion as visualization of similarities based on component classes reflecting to some degree biosynthetic pathways: differences in floral scent composition can be related to both the taxonomy and the pollination biology of the species investigated. In all but one species of the Silene group, and all species of the Lychnis group (S. dioica, S. flos-cuculi, S. flos-jovis, S. pendula), the dominating compound classes are benzenoids followed by FADs. The relatively high amounts of aromatic compounds (e.g. benzaldehyde, phenylacetaldehyde, methyl benzoate) are indicative of an adaptation towards butterfly pollination. Species of the Viscaria and Eudianthe groups showed high relative amounts of FADs but a lower content of benzenoids. Relatively high amounts of monoterpenes (>10%) were found in S. alpestris, S. coeli-rosa, S. gallica, and S. viscaria. It is suggested that the high relative content of the most volatile monoterpene alkenes (e.g. limonene) in S. gallica and S. coeli-rosa may be indicative of an adaptation to bees as pollinators in these species.  相似文献

The sting is the most effective defense of social Hymenoptera against vertebrate predators but in the hover wasps (subfamily Stenogastrinae) it is scarcely used. In these wasps a quite enlarged Dufour’s gland and the extensive use of its secretion in the peculiar rearing of the larvae and defense determined important morphological modifications of the sting structure. Connecting anatomical and morphological data with behavioral observations we determined that in these wasps the Dufour’s gland secretion is attached to the egg during oviposition but can be also channeled to the outside via the sting when it is collected by adult females for larval rearing or construction of the nest ant guards. The anatomical modifications of the sting reduced the function of the sting as a defensive weapon in hover wasps.  相似文献

Exocrine glands play an important role in maintaining the integrity of colonies of social Hymenoptera. The postpharyngeal gland (PPG) of ants is crucial for the generation of a nest odour that enables nestmate recognition. The evolutionary history of this gland is unknown and it was thought to be restricted to ants. Here we describe an exocrine head gland in females of a solitary crabronid wasp, the European beewolf, Philanthus triangulum, that resembles the PPG of ants in many respects. The newly described gland has the same location and the same glove like shape as in ants, and it also has a monolayered epithelium with similar ultrastructure. Unlike in ants, the epithelium bears hairs that reach into the lumen of the gland. Although the PPG of beewolves serves a completely different function it is also associated to an allogrooming behaviour as in ants. Based on these morphological and behavioural similarities as well as similarities in the chemical composition of the content of the PPG of both taxa, we hypothesise that the PPGs of ants and beewolves have a common evolutionary origin. Thus, our results suggest that the PPG in ants might not have evolved in response to social requirements but might have already existed in solitary predecessors.  相似文献

We tested predictions from four hypotheses to explain the occurrence of long-term socially monogamous pairs in the Caribbean cleaning goby Elacatinus (=Gobiosoma) evelynae, namely (1) resource limitation, (2) low population and/or low mate density, (3) territorial defence and (4) net benefit of single-mate sequestration. We found no evidence that resources, in terms of available cleaning stations or clients to clean, were limited (1) or that after experimental goby removals, single individuals could not maintain cleaning stations alone (2). Population density was low but this did not prevent artificially widowed fish from remating quickly with individuals as large as their initial partners (3). Social monogamy in E. evelynae appears to result from the benefits associated with sequestering a large, high-quality mate (4). Both males and females showed intrasexual aggression towards experimental intruders consistent with mate guarding. Opportunities for polygynous matings by males, assessed by comparing the sizes, distances between and mating synchrony of neighbouring pairs, appeared both low and of limited value. Males therefore benefit most from guarding a larger, more fecund female. Females spent longer cleaning when paired with a large male, indicating that the benefits of guarding a high-quality mate may extend outside of the reproductive period for socially monogamous species. These results add to an increasing number of studies on coral reef fish showing mate-guarding behaviour and benefits to males and females from sequestering a single mate. Constraints on form may determine how organisms diversify. As a result of competition for the limited space within the body, investment in adjacent structures could represent an evolutionary compromise. For example, evolutionary trade‐offs resulting from limited space in the head could have influenced how the sizes of the jaw muscle, as well as the eyes, evolved in North American cyprinid fishes. To test the evolutionary independence of the size of these structures, we measured the mass of the three major adductor mandibulae muscles and determined the eye volume in 36 cyprinid species. Using a novel phylogeny, we tested the hypotheses that the sizes of these four structures were negatively correlated with each other during cyprinid evolution. We found that evolutionary change in the adductor mandibulae muscles was generally positively and/or not correlated, suggesting that competition for space among cyprinid jaw muscles has not influenced their evolution. However, there was a negative relationship between mass of adductor mandibulae 1 and eye volume, indicating that change in these physically adjacent structures is consistent with an evolutionary constructional constraint. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 103 , 136–146.  相似文献

Studies of species survey are important to know the available natural resources and to get useful information about the ecological characteristics of a specific area. There are not studies, on this issue, related to social wasps, in the Triangulo Mineiro region. The present study describes the diversity of species found in fragments of the cerrado region in Uberlandia, MG, and their temporal distribution. The field study was conducted from October 2003 to September 2004, and 43 samplings were carried out using active searching (24) and point sampling (19) methodologies. Twenty-nine species were found in 10 genera, Polybia and Polistes corresponding to 51.5% of the total listing. Mischocyttarus cerberus styx Richards represented 26.5% of the total individuals recorded by active searching and Agelaia pallipes (Olivier) corresponded to 57.6% by point sampling. Two species had their first record for the state of Minas Gerais: Polybia striata (Fabricius) and M. cerberus styx. The studied fragments presented a high level of diversity (H' = 0.66 to 1.16), a large number of rare species and a few common species. To collect the more common species the point sampling method was satisfactory while active searching was better to collect the rarer species. The active searching methodology was more efficient than point sampling, however some species could only be collected by point sampling. These factors showed that in order to carry out a wasp survey, a combination of different collection methodologies seems to be more appropriate.  相似文献

Summary Spherites in the digestive and secretory cells of the midgut gland of the agelenid spiderCoelotes terrestris were studied by electron microscopy and histochemical methods. Spherites measured 1–6 m in diameter and were characterized by alternating layers of electron dense and electron lucent material. The main-components of spherites were calcium phosphates and calcium carbonates. Guanine and barium, as well as aminopeptidase and alkaline phosphatase were also present. The matrix consisted of proteins and carbohydrates. Numerous spherites were found together with excretory products within the excretory vacuoles of the digestive cells.Spiders fed with food containing lead, showed deposition of the metall in the spherites. It is then proposed that spherites, aside from their role in storing calcium and other ions, may function in detoxification of heavy metals.  相似文献

Natal philopatry in passerine birds: genetic or ecological influences?   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:3
The degree of natal philopatry (the likelihood that individualsbreed at or near their place of origin) can influence the extentof inbreeding in animal populations. Passerine birds have beencited as typically showing high natal philopatry, and natalphilopatry has been proposed as an adaptation to promote optimalinbreeding. A review of published and unpublished studies ofpasserines showed that natal philopatry was typically low, somaintaining a high level of inbreeding appears relatively unimportantfor such birds. Rather, natal philopatry appeared to be morestrongly influenced by ecological factors. Migratory passerineexhibited low natal philopatry compared to resident passerines,as predicted if dispersal costs for young birds are an importantdeterminant of natal philopatry. The erroneous view that natalphilopatry for passerines is generally high has resulted froma reporting bias toward resident species that have sufficientnatal philopatry to study. Natal philopatry was found to beevolutionarily labile; populations of the same species and pairsof closely related species that differed in their degree ofisolation differed considerably in their degree of philopatry.Future studies of natal philopatry should consider both theecological factors that could affect dispersal costs and thereporting biases that influence which data on philopatry tendto be reported.  相似文献

We studied the coexistence of four species of Sylvia warblers living in Mediterranean matorral in order to identify the respective role of ecological segregation and of interspecific territoriality in explaining the local distribution of these four species. Data on habitat use, foraging behaviour and interspecific spacial segregation were collected on Corsica and on Spargi (Sardinia) islands. Despite large overlap in patch selection and in foraging behaviour the four species did segregate ecologically and behaviourally while foraging (differences in the choice of plant species used for foraging, in the height of the plant selected, in the selection of the portion of the plant volume used and in the selection of the plant structure explored). Complementarity in foraging behaviour was observed in the morphologically and ecologically closest species: the Dartford ( Sylvia undata ) and the Marmora's ( Sylvia sarda ) warblers. We did not observe any evidence of direct interspecific interactions in song, alarm, or aggressive behaviour. Nor did we observe patterns of spatial distribution that would support the idea of coexistence by interspecific territorial exclusion. These results contrast with the results of Cody & Walter (1976) suggesting interspecific territoriality in Mediterranean Sylvia warblers. They are consistent with other published results emphasizing ecological differences as explanation for species coexistence.  相似文献

The European Peristenus relictus Loan (syn. P. stygicus) has been considered for biological control of Lygus plant bugs native to Canada. Laboratory and field studies were conducted in the area of origin to evaluate the host specificity of P. relictus. Laboratory choice and no-choice tests demonstrated that P. relictus attacked all non-target species offered (fundamental host range). However, closely related non-target mirids (tribe Mirini) were generally well accepted by P. relictus, while hosts from the tribe Stenodemini were less frequently attacked and less suitable for parasitoid development. To validate the laboratory results, a thorough examination of the parasitoid complex of common mirids in Europe was conducted to determine which non-target species may serve as alternative hosts for P. relictus in a natural situation (ecological host range). When comparing both approaches, the fundamental host range of P. relictus matched its ecological host range. In addition to three Lygus species, the ecological host range of P. relictus in the area of Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany, contains at least 16 non-target species, including hosts belonging to the subfamilies Mirinae, Phylinae and Bryocorinae. A broad ecological and fundamental host range suggests that P. relictus is a generalist; however, P. relictus was not the primary contributor to parasitism of most non-target hosts studied. Although P. relictus is assumed to be of minor importance for regulating non-target populations in the area of investigation, the results of the present study indicate that P. relictus has the potential to use non-target host populations for reproduction.  相似文献

We investigated changes in the communities of trap-nesting Hymenoptera in forests in relation to forest loss on a landscape scale and understory conditions on a local habitat scale. Two specific questions were addressed. (1) Do the communities change with degrees of forest loss? (2) Do the communities change with varying local environmental conditions of understory habitats? The study was made in a landscape characterized by distributed forest patches within intensively managed agricultural surroundings. We deployed trap-nests at eight randomly selected sites in forests in summer. To quantify forest loss, the amount of forest coverage was calculated using GIS. To indicate local habitat conditions, the species richness of understory flowering plants was used. All together, 12 species of wasps and no bees were captured. Regression analyses showed that both abundance and species richness of the wasps were not significantly related to forest coverage. However, abundance of trap-nesting wasps was significantly related to species richness of understory plants, but species richness of the wasps was not significantly related to the plants. These results suggest that communities of trap-nesting wasps in forests are influenced more by the local habitat conditions than by forest loss.  相似文献

The variation in eye spectral sensitivities of the closely related mysid species Mysis relicta Lovén, 1862 and Mysis salemaai Audzijonyt? and Väinölä, 2005 was studied in sympatric and allopatric populations from the brackish Baltic Sea and from two lakes representing different light environments. In the Baltic Sea the maximum spectral sensitivity of M. relicta, measured by the electroretinogram (ERG) technique, was shifted by ca 20 nm to longer wavelengths than in M. salemaai (564 and 545 nm, respectively). The spectral sensitivity of M. salemaai was closer to that of marine mysid species, which is consistent with its broader euryhalinity and the presumed longer brackish-water history. The species-specific sensitivities in the Baltic Sea were not affected by regional differences in light environments. In two lake populations of M. relicta, the spectral sensitivity was further shifted by ca 28 nm towards the longer wavelengths compared with the conspecific Baltic Sea populations. The spectral sensitivities in the four M. relicta populations were not correlated to the current light conditions, but rather to the phylogeographic histories and fresh- vs. brackish-water environments. A framework to further explore factors affecting spectral sensitivities in Mysis is suggested.  相似文献

Abstract

We recorded the numbers of cells, and where possible distinguished between cells containing pupating larvae and vacated cells, from 585 paper wasp nests from the northern North Island, New Zealand, plus nest site characteristics of 540 of these nests. Nests of Polistes chinensis antennalis and P. humilis developed at similar rates in early summer. P. c. antennalis nests were larger at the Post‐emergence stage than those of P. humilis, and contained more vacated cells but less capped cells. All of the P. c. antennalis nests had reached the Post‐emergence stage by February in Northland, but not in the other regions. P. c. antennalis nests in the Post‐emergence stage were larger in Northland than further south, and contained the most capped or vacated cells. Nests of both species were usually found in northern‐facing sites. Substrate did not affect nest size. Differences between the species in nest sites included greater use of manmade structures by P. c. antennalis; the use of leaves by P. humilis only; and a higher average nest site height in P. humilis. These differences in nest site selection may reduce competition between the species.  相似文献

(1) The parasitoid Aphidius colemani was reared at 15 or 25 °C to induce variation in size and fat reserves; SCP and cold-tolerance were compared. Insects from both temperatures were also exposed to constant or fluctuating cold-exposure.

(2) The lower SCP in mummies reared at 25 °C may be partially explained by their smaller size, a negative relationship being observed between SCP and size.

(3) A bimodality was observed in SCP distributions, with two modes around −26 and −22 °C, likely because of presence/absence of gut content.

(4) The type of exposure had a striking impact, mortality being considerably lower under fluctuating regime.

(5) While energy storage is an important factor, vulnerability to chill-injury is supposed to be the primary factor regulating survival at low temperature.  相似文献

Twenty seven species of the family Eulophidae were reared from 20 new lepidopteran hosts in Ul’yanovsk Province. Among newly revealed host-parasitoid associations, 27, 9, 3, and 3 are those with Phyllonorycter (Gracillariidae), Stigmella and single species of Ectoedemia (Nepticulidae), Yponomeuta (Yponomeutidae), and Tischeria (Tischeriidae), respectively. Ectoparasitoids prevailed among parasitoids of the genus Phyllonorycter, and endoparasitoids, among parasitoids of the genera Stigmella and Tischeria.  相似文献
