Capsule Less than 32% of counters record disturbance at their site, with differences in causes between coastal and inland sites.

Aim Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) data were reviewed to investigate the sources and scale of potential disturbance to waterbirds in the UK.

Methods Between 1995/96 and 1998/99, WeBS volunteer counters recorded human activity and perceived waterbird disturbance during co-ordinated counts at wetland sites across the UK.

Results Over 68% of counters recorded no disturbance at their site and only a small proportion of these (< 2%) indicated very high levels. The frequency of disturbance peaked during the late summer. Just over 26% of disturbance events were attributed to human activities. The most perceived human-related disturbance was caused by people using motor-driven machines and shooters. Coastal waterbirds were more likely to be disturbed by walkers, shooters and large aircraft whereas those inland were more likely to be disturbed by motor-driven machines and unpowered boats.

Conclusions Volunteer-based surveys can be useful in monitoring the sources and distribution of potentially disturbing activities over large spatial scales.  相似文献

Capsule: The 2007 national survey of the UK breeding population of Little Ringed Plovers shows a further spread into Scotland and Wales since the previous survey in 1984. In contrast, there has been a significant decrease in the Ringed Plover breeding population.

Aims: To provide new breeding population estimates in the UK and Great Britain for Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius and Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula in 2007 and investigate changes in breeding distribution and habitat use since 1984.

Methods: Breeding population estimates were made by combining counts of pairs from ‘key sites’ (2?×?2?km tetrads known to be occupied in/since 1984) and estimates of the numbers of pairs away from these sites based on stratified sampling. Survey periods for Little Ringed Plover: 15 April to 15 July, three visits; Ringed Plover: 15 April to 30 June, two visits.

Results: Population estimates, for 2007, of 1239 (95% confidence intervals: 1175–1311) pairs of Little Ringed Plover and 5291 (5106–5478) pairs of Ringed Plovers were calculated for Great Britain, with 5438 (5257–5622) pairs of Ringed Plover estimated in the UK. Counts of Ringed Plover at inland and coastal sites, covered in both 1984 and 2007, decreased by 83% and 53%, respectively. The Little Ringed Plover population has expanded in range northward and westward since 1984. Main habitats used in 2007 by Little Ringed Plover were inland gravel and sand (25.9%) and river shingle (17.8%); and, for Ringed Plover, coastal shingle and sand (38.5% and 13.7%, respectively) and machair plus associated habitats (23.8%) in the Outer Hebrides.

Conclusions: Between 1984 and 2007, the Little Ringed Plover breeding population in the UK increased considerably, expanding northward and westward, with increased use of river shingle habitats. During the same period Ringed Plover breeding numbers in the UK declined considerably in both coast and inland habitats, likely to be due to human disturbance and habitat change, respectively.  相似文献

Capsule: Barn Swallows Hirundo rustica were more likely to forage along arable field margins that were enhanced with wildflowers or legumes than control grass margins.

Aims: To determine if foraging Barn Swallows displayed preferences for specific arable field boundary habitats (grass margins versus floristically enhanced margins) that were managed as part of an agri-environment scheme. We also aim to determine how Barn Swallow food abundance related to these habitats.

Methods: Two foraging activity surveys took place on all grass and floristically enhanced margins (n?=?56) present within the 600 m foraging range of seven Barn Swallow colonies during June and July 2016. Margin habitat use was measured by recording the presence/absence of foraging individuals during surveys, the total number of individuals and by calculating an index of foraging activity. Habitat information relating to adjacent boundary type, transect crop type and neighbouring crop type were also recorded.

Results: Foraging Barn Swallows were significantly more likely to be recorded when survey transects included a floristically enhanced margin, but there was no significant impact of floristically enhanced margins on the total number of individuals recorded or on the index of foraging activity. Foraging activity was higher along grass verges and hedgerows when compared to treelines and was positively related to length weighted Diptera abundance (a measure of food biomass).

Conclusion: Our results suggest that there may be a role for floristically enhanced margins in the conservation of Barn Swallows on arable farmland. More research, however, is needed to determine whether invertebrate-rich agri-environment scheme habitats can influence colony size or improve the breeding success of this species.  相似文献

Organisms often respond to environmental change via phenotypic plasticity, in which an individual modulates its phenotype according to the environment. Highly variable or changing environments can exceed physiological limits and generate maladapted plastic phenotypes, which is termed nonadaptive plasticity. In some cases, selection may reduce the negative or disruptive impacts of environmental stress and produce locally adapted populations. Salt is an increasingly prevalent contaminant of freshwater systems and can induce nonadaptive plastic phenotypes for freshwater organisms like amphibians. Hyla cinerea is a frog species with populations inhabiting brackish, coastal habitats, so we use this species to test whether coastal populations are locally adapted to tolerate saltwater by determining how salt exposure during the embryonic and larval stages alters mortality and plastic developmental and metamorphic phenotypes of coastal and inland populations. Coastal frogs have higher survival, faster growth rates, and metamorphose sooner than inland frogs across salinities. Coastal frogs also metamorphose smaller (likely a consequence of earlier metamorphosis) yet maintain constant size, while higher salinities reduce metamorphic size for inland frogs. Coastal frogs evolved to minimize nonadaptive and disruptive impacts of saltwater during larval development and accelerate the larval period to reduce time spent in a stressful environment.  相似文献

From 1976 onward, molting brant geese (Branta bernicla) within the Teshekpuk Lake Special Area, Alaska, shifted from inland, freshwater lakes toward coastal wetlands. Two hypotheses explained this redistribution: (1) ecological change: redistribution of molting brant reflects improvements in coastal foraging habitats, which have undergone a succession toward salt-tolerant plants due to increased coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion as induced by climate change or (2) interspecific competition: greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) populations increased 12-fold at inland lakes, limiting food availability and forcing brant into coastal habitats. Both hypotheses presume that brant redistributions were driven by food availability; thus, body mass dynamics may provide insight into the relevance of these hypotheses. We compared body mass dynamics of molting brant across decades (1978, 1987–1992, 2005–2007) and, during 2005–2007, across habitats (coastal vs. inland). Brant lost body mass during molt in all three decades. At inland habitats, rates of mass loss progressively decreased by decade despite the increased number of greater white-fronted geese. These results do not support an interspecific competition hypothesis, instead suggesting that ecological change enhanced foraging habitats for brant. During 2005–2007, rates of mass loss did not vary by habitat. Thus, while habitats have improved from earlier decades, our results cannot distinguish between ecological changes at inland versus coastal habitats. However, we speculate that coastal forage quality has improved beyond that of inland habitats and that the body mass benefits of these higher quality foods are offset by the disproportionate number of brant now molting coastally.  相似文献

Provision of suitable habitat for waterbirds is a major challenge for environmental managers in arid and semiarid regions with high spatial and temporal variability in rainfall. It is understood in broad terms that to survive waterbirds must move according to phases of wet–dry cycles, with coastal habitats providing drought refugia and inland wetlands used during the wet phase. However, both inland and coastal wetlands are subject to major anthropogenic pressures, and the various species of waterbird may have particular habitat requirements and respond individualistically to spatiotemporal variations in resource distribution. A better understanding of the relationships between occurrence of waterbirds and habitat condition under changing climatic conditions and anthropogenic pressures will help clarify patterns of habitat use and the targeting of investments in conservation. We provide the first predictive models of habitat availability between wet and dry phases for six widely distributed waterbird species at a large spatial scale. We first test the broad hypothesis that waterbirds are largely confined to coastal regions during a dry phase. We then examine the contrasting results among the six species, which support other hypotheses erected on the basis of their ecological characteristics. There were large increases in area of suitable habitat in inland regions in the wet year compared with the dry year for all species, ranging from 4.14% for Australian White Ibis to 31.73% for Eurasian Coot. With over half of the suitable habitat for three of the six species was located in coastal zones during drought, our study highlights the need to identify and conserve coastal drought refuges. Monitoring of changes in extent and condition of wetlands, combined with distribution modeling of waterbirds, will help support improvements in the conservation and management of waterbirds into the future.  相似文献

Capsule Game cover crops in a pastoral region of southwest Scotland supported passerines at more than twice the density found in similar crops in an arable region.

Aims To investigate the use of seed-rich habitats (game cover crops) by farmland passerines in the agricultural grasslands of southwest Scotland relative to the arable east.

Methods Birds were counted in game cover crops and conventional crops on nine farms in Dumfries and Galloway, and Ayrshire, during the winters of 2003/04 and 2004/05. Similar data from eastern Scotland were re-analysed to compare the relative use of the two crop types in the contrasting regions.

Results Passerine densities in game cover crops in southwest Scotland were two orders of magnitude greater than in conventional crops. Furthermore, densities within grassland game cover crops were more than double those in arable areas and densities in grassland conventional crops were just 14% of those in equivalent arable habitats.

Conclusion The significantly greater difference between passerine densities in game cover crops and conventional crops in a grassland versus an arable region of Scotland could not be explained by differences in the bird communities, crop types, boundary habitats, weather, observer effects or survey methods used. We suggest that game cover crops may be more attractive in grassland regions because alternative food sources are rarer than in arable regions.  相似文献

Capsule Breeding performance was higher at inland colonies than on the coast due to higher nestling survival during late development.

Aims To compare breeding performance of inland and coastal breeding Cormorants in England and Wales and to provide breeding performance data for Cormorants for future demographic studies.

Methods Breeding performance and timing of breeding was monitored at six inland and four coastal colonies during 1997 and 1998. We compare clutch and brood size and egg and nestling survival.

Results Breeding performance was higher at inland colonies because of higher nestling survival during the later stages of nestling development, from 15–56 days.

Conclusions Greater and earlier food availability at inland colonies, resulting in earlier and more protracted breeding is the most probable explanation for differences in breeding performance. A more protracted breeding season would reduce competition for food and enhance breeding performance, which may be especially apparent during late chick development when energy demands are greatest.  相似文献

Monthly surveys of Bewick's Swans Cygnus columbianus bewickii , Whooper Swans Cygnus cygnus and Mute Swans Cygnus olor in Britain and Ireland were made during the 1990–1991 winter to determine factors affecting the swans' selection of feeding sites. Geographic location and habitat both influenced site selection. Whooper Swans occurred in greatest numbers at sites in Scotland, northeastern England and Northern Ireland, whereas Bewick's Swans had a more southerly distribution, reflecting differences in the migratory routes used by these two species. The resident Mute Swans were more widespread, with large flocks occurring in southeastern England and in parts of Scotland. Whooper and Mute Swans were found mainly on permanent inland waters (68% and 61%, respectively), but the majority of Bewick's Swans (60%) were on arable land. The percentage of Bewick's Swan flocks found on permanent inland waters (42%) was higher than that found on arable fields (23%), indicating that the large number recorded on arable land was a result of the birds congregating at a comparatively small number of sites. Overall, less than 15% of Whooper Swans and 3% of Mute Swans were on arable crops during the winter, but the largest flocks were associated with arable land for all three species. Thus, although the occurrence of large flocks at particular arable sites may give an impression that swans feed mainly on farmland, the swans are in fact more widely dispersed. Regional variation in the percentage of juveniles present was recorded for all three species. Changes during the winter in the distribution of juveniles, and of the swans as a whole, are considered in relation to food supply and to migratory routes for the Bewick's and Whooper Swans.  相似文献

For a number of years, the Guinean government has given high priority to nature conservation. Currently the conservation and wise use of natural resources are important issues of the country's developmental policy. The country has a rainy season of seven months (May-November), and heavy rainfall in the coastal area, an average of 2 000–4 000 mm/yr. Coastal wetlands cover a large area: 700 km2 mud flats, 600 km2 mangroves, 780 km2 rice fields and several hundred km2 freshwater swamp. Large numbers of waterbirds can be found in the Guinean coastal wetlands, and also in Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cöte d'Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, and Gambia. These countries share the same natural resources with Republic of Guinea, especially during the European winter, when, in addition to the Afrotropical species, there are many palearctic migrants. Over half a million waterbirds winter in the area, of which the palearctic waders, with 430 000, form the major part. Additionally, there are considerable numbers of flamingos, herons, egrets, and terns. The numbers of waterbirds during the European summer amount to 20% of those in winter, of the palearctic waders alone to 10%. In both seasons by far the largest number of waterbirds can be found on the mudflats. Various breeding waterbirds can be found on a few islands (> 3 000 pairs of brown booby, Sula leucogaster on the Isle of Alcatraz), and in the mangroves, rice fields and freshwater swamps. There are considerable breeding numbers of African Darter Anhinga rufa, Green-backed heron Buroroides striatus, White-necked stork Ciconia espiscopus and Caspian Tem Sterna caspia—breeding occurs mainly in the rainy season, except for the island, where most breeding takes place in the dry season. The Guinean coastal wetlands meet also the various criteria developed under the terms of the Ramsar Convention to identify wetlands of international importance. They easily meet the criterion of “regularly supporting 20 000 waterfowl” by the mere occurrence of large numbers during this period. The Guinean coastline, which has a length of 300 km, covers about a quarter of the West African mangrove coast between mid-Senegal and Sierra Leone. Although part of the mangroves have disappeared because of tree cutting and land reclamation for rice cultivation, these tidal forests still form a main part of the Guinean coast. Nearly all the well-developed large scale mangrove areas lie north of Conakry. According to some observations these are the three major threats to the coastal wetlands of Guinea: destruction of the mangrove habitats, hunting, disturbance of breeding sites, the latter being predominantly human disturbance of breeding bird colonies. Especially important is the destruction of parts of the mangrove zones by wood cutting and land reclamation in favour of rice cultivation. The Ninth Pan-African Ornithological Congress should be an opportunity to recommend the execution of appropriate national regional training programmes for concerned African countries. That programme will help to have solid specialists able to present adapted ornithological policies in the interested countries of Africa. The congress should also organise an official regional institution through which periodical contacts of specialists and quthorities can be made at local and international level. The congress must have some international development co-operation in ornithological fields in Africa. The congress may recommend development co-operation policy with Ramsar Convention Office, Wetlands International, WWF, IUCN, and any other concerned institutions.  相似文献

CapsuleThe amount of forest (at local and landscape scales) and occurrence of residual habitats at the local scale are shown to be the major factors influencing bird community composition in farmland–forest landscapes in central Sweden.

Aims To investigate the importance of local habitat and landscape structure for breeding birds in farmland–forest landscapes in central Sweden.

Methods Breeding birds were censused at 292 points. A detailed habitat mapping was made within 300 m of the points. Within a 300–600 m radius only two major habitats (forests and arable fields) were identified.

Results Cluster analyses of bird communities identified three site types that also differed in habitat composition: (i) partially forested sites in forested landscapes; (ii) heterogeneous sites with residual habitats in mosaic landscapes; and (iii) field-dominated farmland sites in open landscapes. A total of 19 of 25 farmland bird species (restricted to farmland or using both farmland and forest) had the highest abundance in farmland sites with mosaics of forest and farmland, while only six farmland species had the highest abundance in field-dominated sites. The bird community changed from being dominated by farmland species to being dominated by forest species (common in forest landscapes without farmland) at small proportions (10–20%) of forest at the local scale. A major difference in habitat composition between heterogeneous and field-dominated sites was the occurrence of different residual habitats (e.g. shrubby areas and seminatural grasslands). These habitats seemed to influence bird community composition more than land-use, despite covering <10% of the area. Seminatural grasslands were important for bird community composition and species-richness, but grazing seemed to be less important. Among different land-use types, cereal crops were the least preferred fields. Set-asides with tall vegetation and short rotation coppices were positively associated with species-richness of farmland birds.

Conclusion In general, the composition of the landscape was important for bird community composition, although amount and distribution of forests, occurrence of residual habitats and land-use of fields at the local scale had the strongest influence on bird community composition. The possible implications of these patterns for managing farmland–forest landscapes are discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT We assessed spatial distribution and habitat use by Ross's and lesser snow geese (Chen rossii and C. caerulescens caerulescens) during late brood rearing to begin understanding goose-habitat interactions and monitoring key habitats around a rapidly growing nesting colony located at Karrak Lake, Nunavut, Canada. We conducted aerial surveys to count geese and georeference locations, then used Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite imagery to identify habitats associated with each flock. We observed 435 and 407 flocks and 36,287 and 32,745 birds in 1994 and 1995, respectively. Birds were somewhat uniformly distributed over the 5,000-km2 study area, with larger aggregations occurring closer to the coast, about 70 km from the colony. We assessed habitat use using Bonferroni intervals at both the flock and individual scales. At the flock level, birds avoided lichen-heath, used other terrestrial habitats as available, and selected freshwater. At the individual level, geese selected lowland habitats: wet sedge meadow, hummock graminoid tundra, and freshwater, which accounted for about 70% of the birds observed, and avoided upland habitats. Selection of lowland habitats is likely due to greater availability of food and easier predator avoidance compared to drier upland areas. Because most geese in our study used freshwater habitats, our results demonstrate that assessment of carrying capacity, at least in the central Arctic, must be expanded beyond the coastal salt marshes traditionally considered by researchers and managers as primary brood-rearing habitat for mid-continent light geese.  相似文献

A herpetofaunal survey of Muni-Pomadze Lagoon, during the main rainy season (May–June), recorded a total of 32 species (13 amphibians and 19 reptiles). Three species are the first records for coastal habitats in Ghana: Kinixys homeana, Calabaria reinhardti, and Bothrophthalmus lineatus. None of the surveyed species are restricted to Ghana. The most diverse herpetofaunal community occurs in grassland thicket, with 26 species (81% of the sampled herpetofauna). Freshwater ponds include 12 species, while only three species (all amphibians) occur in brackish lagoons. Herpetofaunal conservation efforts at these sites should focus on protecting and monitoring grassland coastal thicket and freshwater ponds. Currently, freshwater pond habitats appear to be stable, but coastal thicket is being lost to provide new agricultural land at Muni. Hyperolius reedfrogs, pythons (Python regius) and monitor lizards (Varanus exanthematicus and V. niloticus) appear to offer the greatest potential for undertaking long-term monitoring of the coastal lagoon herpetofauna, because they can be more readily surveyed, and are likely to be sensitive to a broad range of environmental stressors.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) has made a remarkable recovery throughout its range during the last half-century. In Texas, USA, current inland alligator population and harvest management strategies rely on generalized and often site-specific habitat and population data generated from coastal populations, because it is assumed that habitat and demographic similarities exist between inland and coastal populations. These assumptions have not been verified, however, and no studies have specifically examined inland alligator habitat use in Texas. We quantified alligator habitat use in East Texas during 2003–2004 to address this information gap and to facilitate development of regionally specific management strategies. Although habitat was variable among study areas, alligators used habitats with >50% open water, substantial floating vegetation, and emergent vegetation close (<12 m) to dry ground and cover. Adults used habitats further from dry ground and cover, in open water (75–85%), with less floating vegetation (6–22%) than did subadults, which used habitats that were closer to dry ground and cover, with less open water (52–68%), and more floating vegetation (8–40%). Although habitat use mirrored coastal patterns, we estimated alligator densities to be 3–5 times lower than reported in coastal Texas, likely a result of inland habitat deviations from optimal coastal alligator habitat, particularly in the preponderance of open water and floating vegetation. Our findings that 1) inland habitats varied among sites and did not exactly match assumed optimal coastal habitats, 2) alligators used these inland habitats slightly differently than coastal areas, and 3) inland alligator densities were lower than coastal populations, all highlight the need for regionally specific management approaches. Because alligator populations are influenced by habitat quality and availability, any deviations from assumed optimal habitat may magnify harvest impacts upon inland populations.  相似文献

滨海湿地是迁徙水鸟的重要迁飞通道和主要栖息地,评估沿海迁徙水鸟栖息地适宜性及变化态势能为栖息地的合理规划与管理提供科学参考,对迁徙水鸟的保护有重要意义。选择紧邻城市和乡村的深圳湾和雷州湾为研究区,在水鸟栖息地生态系统类型分类的基础上,通过层次分析法确定水鸟栖息地适宜性评价因子,设计栖息地、食物、水分、人类干扰条件及其子类的权重,对栖息地适宜性进行等级划分,分析比较2010-2019年迁徙水鸟栖息地适宜性的时空分布差异,探索适宜性变化差异的原因并给出合理化建议。结果表明:(1)2010-2019年深圳湾有193.4 hm2强干扰区域转变化为中等及弱干扰;雷州湾有16.36 hm2的中等干扰转化为弱、无干扰;(2)深圳湾栖息地适宜性以中等适宜类型为主,2010年和2019年面积占比分别为83.74%和88.71%;雷州湾栖息地适宜性主要以较适宜和中等适宜类型为主,2010年面积占比为86.72%,2010-2019年面积占比基本不变,总体适宜性高于深圳湾。(3)2010-2019年,深圳湾不适宜和较适宜面积分别减少245.54 hm2和26.37 hm2,均转化为中等适宜类型;雷州湾有24.31 hm2的中等和较适宜栖息地转化为适宜类型。  相似文献

Gender phenotypes of Thymelaea hirsuta (L.) Endl. were surveyed in six major habitats in the western Mediterranean region of Egypt. Five gender phenotypes were observed at all sites: subandroecious (male), subgynoecious (female), protogynous, protandrous, and gender-labile individuals. Patterns of vegetative growth, reproductive effort, and sex-size relationships were also determined. Females and males were comparable in overall abundance (35.5% and 30.2%, respectively). However, the frequency of sex forms varied significantly among habitats. Plant size (canopy volume) was used as a measure of environmental quality for the species: the coastal dunes were by far the most favorable habitat, followed by the nonsaline depressions, inland plateau, and inland siliceous deposits. The smallest plants were associated with the inland ridges and saline depressions. Protandrous individuals, and female shrubs at the more favorable habitats (e.g., the coastal dunes and nonsaline depressions), had greater canopy volume than males. In contrast, males were larger than females at the less favorable habitats (e.g., the inland plateau and saline depressions). Advantageous growth conditions at the coastal dunes are demonstrated by the greater rate of increase in crown diameter and crown volume noted there, for each size class and sex form. The greatest rates of increase were present in smaller-sized individuals. Size differences between the sex forms were considered in terms of trade-offs between individual growth rate (GR) and reproductive effort (RE); evidence of a trade-off was mixed. Indeed, in a comparison of GR and RE at two extremes of habitat (coastal dune vs. inland plateau), females had greater GR and greater RE at the relatively benign coastal dunes, while at the more harsh, inland plateau site males showed greater GR and RE than females. Because many natural waterbird habitats are threatened by human disturbance and sea level rise, it is vitally important to identify alternative wetlands that may supplement declining natural habitats. Coastal salinas are anthropogenic habitats used for obtaining salt by evaporation of sea water. These habitats support important numbers of waterbirds around the world, but their importance as feeding habitats is poorly understood. I evaluated salinas as feeding habitats relative to natural intertidal habitats by comparing time spent foraging, prey-size selection, and net energy intake rate of four overwintering small-sized shorebird species on intertidal mudflats and on adjacent salinas. In winter, Dunlin Calidris alpina, Curlew Sandpiper C. ferruginea and Sanderling C. alba predominantly used the mudflats, whereas Little Stint C. minuta fed mainly on the salina. In the pre-migration fattening period, all species preferred to feed on the salina, significantly increasing the time they spent feeding in the supratidal pans. Net energy intake rates (kJ min–1) were significantly higher on the salina than on the intertidal mudflats in 60% of all comparisons. On average, salina contributed 25.2 ± 24.2% (range: 4–54%) of the daily consumption in winter and 78.7 ± 16.4% (range: 63–100%) of the daily consumption in the pre-migration period. I recommend that modern active salinas maintain flooding conditions in the evaporation pans throughout winter, thus increasing the available surface for foraging waterbirds. I conclude that the conservation of salinas at coastal wetlands is a viable approach for shorebird conservation.  相似文献

Octoblepharum albidum Hedw. is an autoicous moss commonly occurring in tropical savannas, dry forests, rainforests and coastal habitats. It frequently reproduces by spores and asexual structures (gemmae and protonemata or buds at leaf tips), making it a good model for understanding how reproductive traits change with respect to habitat type. Our aims were to characterize the different life-history traits in O. albidum relative to sexual and asexual cycles and to detect variations in reproductive performance among the different habitats, trade-offs among these traits, and relationships among reproductive traits and plant length. We studied colonies from two Atlantic rainforests and two coastal sites in north-eastern Brazil. Shoots in the coastal sites, compared to those of the forest sites, had higher numbers of sporophytes, male and female branches per shoot, male gametangia per sexual branch, and longer setae. Numbers of female gametangia per sexual branch did not differ between forest and coastal sites. A male-biased sex ratio of branches and gametangia occurred in all sites. Compared to gemmae, sporophytes and protonemata or buds were more likely to be found on longer shoots than on shorter ones, but this relationship was only applicable to forest sites. The abundant production of gemmae and protonemata or buds at leaf tips, and sporophytes (spores) in O. albidum are important components in explaining colonization success and maintenance in this tropical moss. Longer sporophytic setae in addition to a higher reproductive performance (especially for number of male gametangia and sporophytes per shoot) may favour spore dispersal and colonization in plants of coastal sites.  相似文献

Lake Biwa, one of the few ancient lakes in the world, harbors many coastal species that commonly inhabit seashores. The beach pea (Lathyrus japonicus) is a typical coastal species of this freshwater lake, and morphological and genetic differentiation between inland and coastal populations of this species have been reported. Inland and coastal habitats inflict distinct environmental stresses to plants, the latter imposing salt stress and high-light intensity, which leads to physiological differentiation. These abiotic stresses affect phenolic compounds, which play an important role in the response of plants to the toxic by-products of stress metabolism. We investigated physiological differentiation of phenolic compounds of the beach pea between inland and coastal habitats using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. Flavonoid composition analyses revealed that patterns of flavonoid composition of inland populations at Lake Biwa were differentiated from those of coastal populations. All Lake Biwa individuals were fixed in the same flavonols glycosylated at 3- and 7-positions. In contrast, most coastal individuals contained flavonols glycosylated at 3-position alone, and these populations exhibited higher variation in flavonoid composition compared to among/within inland populations. Variation was likely lower in inland populations because of a bottleneck during landlocked periods, which is consistent with previous phylogeographic studies. A qualitative HPLC survey of flavonoid content revealed substantial variation among individuals regardless of locality. These results suggest that changes in the habitat environment may have led to beach pea acclimation via alteration of the quantity and quality of flavonoids.  相似文献

In Central Europe, salt-influenced habitats are restricted mainly to the coastlines of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The few natural inland salt sites suffer from size reduction and loss in biodiversity, while anthropogenic salt sites around potash mining dumps experienced recent and massive de novo colonization by numerous halophytes. Our study aimed to elucidate the general patterns of gene flow among coastal and inland salt habitats. We used amplified fragment length polymorphisms to assess the genetic diversity and genetic structure of 18 European populations of the halophyte Spergularia media (Caryophyllaceae), sampled from inland and coastal salt sites of Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, France and Italy. Estimates of genetic diversity on the population level were generally low, especially within inland salt habitats. Analyses of molecular variance showed comparatively strong differentiation among populations. Multivariate ordination (principal coordinate analysis) and a NeighborNet analysis revealed four distinct groups of populations that showed good correspondence to their geographic origins. A Bayesian analysis performed with the program Structure as well as high pairwise Φ ST values supported the results of the phenetic analyses. The observed patterns of diversity and differentiation among inland populations of S. media are best explained by the isolated nature of suitable salt habitats, with concomitant reduction of gene flow to and among these sites. Our data support the hypothesis that the colonization of anthropogenic salt sites by S. media originated from natural inland habitats.  相似文献
