ABSTRACT

Capsule: In large and medium wetlands with extended reed beds Phragmites and cattail Typha dominated areas, Water Rails Rallus aquaticus and Little Crakes Zapornia parva show higher differences in nesting sites in contrast with other populations from small and fragmented wetlands, where the ranges of values for environmental variables at nesting sites overlap greatly.

Aims: To investigate the nesting sites and nesting habitats of both species to a fine scale, on medium and large wetlands, to evaluate the potential overlapping of nesting habitat and to compare data with those obtained in small wetlands.

Methods: In the study area, the Fize? Basin, Romania, 17 wetlands, ponds and reed beds ranging from 11.78 to 252.68 ha were investigated. The species were present on 4 wetlands, which were subsequently surveyed for nests. Between April and August 2010–2012, a total of 83 Water Rail and 46 Little Crake nests were found, measured and analysed in terms of nesting habitat and nest features.

Results: Principal component analyses suggest no overlap in nest site selection and a partial overlap in the nest features. An analysis of similarity confirmed significant nest structural differences. A discriminant function analysis highlights the main factors dividing the nest features of both species being: water depth and distance between the nest and a water surface. Little Crakes build their nests in cattail Typha sloped clumps, while Water Rails build their nests near reed Phragmites strains.

Conclusion: In large and medium wetlands, Water Rails nest deep in the reed bed rather than in other types of habitats, contrary to what has been reported for small ponds areas. Little Crakes nest in cattail independently of the size of the wetland where they occur.  相似文献

Examining population genetic structure can reveal patterns of reproductive isolation or population mixing and inform conservation management. Some avian species are predicted to exhibit minimal genetic differentiation among populations as a result of the species high mobility, with habitat specialists tending to show greater fine‐scale genetic structure. To explore the relationship between habitat specialization and gene flow, we investigated the genetic structure of a saltmarsh specialist with high potential mobility across a wide geographical range of fragmented habitat. Little variation among mitochondrial sequences (620 bp from ND2) was observed among 149 individual Clapper Rails Rallus crepitans sampled along the Atlantic coast of the USA, with the majority of individuals at all sampling sites sharing a single haplotype. Genotyping of nine microsatellite loci across 136 individuals revealed moderate genetic diversity, no evidence of bottlenecks and a weak pattern of genetic differentiation that increased with geographical distance. Multivariate analyses, Bayesian clustering and an AMOVA all suggested a lack of genetic structuring across the Atlantic coast of the USA, with all individuals grouped into a single interbreeding population. Spatial autocorrelation analyses showed evidence of weak female philopatry and a lack of male philopatry. We conclude that high gene flow connecting populations of this habitat specialist may result from the interaction of ecological and behavioural factors that promote dispersal and limit natal philopatry and breeding‐site fidelity. As climate change threatens saltmarshes, the genetic diversity and population connectivity of Clapper Rails may promote resilience of their populations. This finding helps inform about potential fates of other similarly behaving saltmarsh specialists on the Atlantic coast.  相似文献

The vapour pressure of the haemolymph of a supercooled insect is higher than the vapour pressure of the haemolymph of a frozen insect at the same temperature. The aim of the study was to see whether this may affect the water loss of freeze-avoiding and freezetolerant, over-wintering beetles. The rates of water loss were determined on freeze-tolerant Pytho depressus larvae and Upis ceramboides adults. Within each species one group was kept supercooled whereas another group was frozen. All groups were incubated at-5°C. Both species displayed significantly lower rates of water loss when they were frozen than when they were supercooled. Values of respiratory rate and water loss of freeze-avoiding and freeze-tolerant species were compared to corresponding values of desert beetles. The results indicate that the freeze-avoiding species have lower rates of cuticular water loss than freeze-tolerant species. This indicates that the freeze-avoiding species have developed more efficient water-saving mechanisms than freeze-tolerant species. The reason for this may be that the haemolymph in frozen animals will be in vapour pressure equlibrium with the ice in the hibernaculum and thus there is no danger of desiccation during winter. 美国白蛾Hyphantria cunea Drury是我国唯一一种被农业、林业共同列为检疫对象的害虫。本论文通过2010与2011年室内测定和室外调查的一系列研究表明,美国白蛾蛹在不同低温处理下随着处理时间的延长存活率逐渐降低。其中,-10℃下处理30 h后几乎没有越冬蛹存活,-15℃下处理3 h后越冬蛹的存活率低于5%,-20℃处理25 min后越冬蛹几乎没有羽化为成虫的个体。0℃低温处理对越冬蛹的低温存活率有重要影响,且随着0℃下处理的时间长短而发生变化,在0℃下处理时间越长则在-10℃下存活率越高。在0℃下处理150 min以后,存活率随处理时间的延长差异不显著。  相似文献

Under increased oxygen tensions, Thermus aquaticus exhibited a lag period in growth of 80 min, during which the specific activities of catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase increased. Methyl viologen increased the lag period, decreased the maximum population density, increased cell lysis, and induced catalase and superoxide dismutase. Thermus aquaticus contains four major fatty acids, iso-C(15) (28%), iso-C(16) (9%), normal-C(16) (13%), and iso-C(17) (48%), when grown at 70 C, as determined by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Small amounts of iso-C(12), normal-C(12:1), iso-C(13), normal-C(14), iso-C(14), and normal-C(15:1) were also detected. A change in growth temperature (50 to 75 C at 5-C intervals) affects a shift in the proportions of some of the fatty acids. The proportions of the monoenoic and branched-C(17) fatty acids decreased and the proportions of the higher-melting iso-C(16) and normal-C(16) fatty acids increased. Cells grown at 75 C contained 70% more total fatty acids than cells grown at 50 C. The largest increases, in absolute amounts, were in the content of iso-C(16) and normal-C(16) fatty acids, with only a 1.6-fold increase in the major iso-C(15) and iso-C(17) fatty acids. There was a 2.5-fold decrease in normal-C(15:1) and at least a 24-fold decrease in anteiso-C(17), which is present at 50 and 55 C but not at higher temperatures. There was no difference in proportion or amount of fatty acids between exponential and stationary-phase cells grown at 70 C. When cells were grown on glutamate instead of yeast-extract and tryptone at 70 C, the total fatty acid content remained constant, but there was an increase in the proportions of iso-C(16) and normal-C(16) fatty acids concomitant with a decrease in the proportions of the iso-C(15) and iso-C(17) fatty acids.  相似文献

Electron microscopic studies using thin sections revealed that Thermus aquaticus has a structure similar to that of most other gram-negative bacteria. The cell envelope is tripartite: plasma membrane, thin middle layer, and a thicker and irregular outer layer. The outer layer appears to be joined to the plasma membrane by a series of connections and, when seen in tangential section, the outer layer appears as a series of parallel bands. The cell division mechanism resembles that of typical gram-negative bacteria. Large spherical bodies designated “rotund bodies” are formed as a result of the association of a number of separate cells. In this association the outer envelope layers of the cells fuse and pull away from the middle layer. The rotund body thus appears as a series of rods, usually lying in parallel around the periphery of the sphere, completely connected by means of the fused outer layer.  相似文献

Background  

Water Rails (Rallus aquaticus) inhabit fragmented freshwater wetlands across their Palearctic distribution. Disjunct populations are now thought to be morphologically similar over their vast geographic range, though four subspecies had been recognized previously. The fossil record suggests that Water Rails (R. aquaticus) were already spread across the Palearctic by the Pleistocene ~2 million years ago, and the oldest fossil remains thought to be closely related to the common ancestor of water rails date from the Pliocene.  相似文献

Seven strains of Microcyclus aquaticus were found to be capable of growth on methanol and hydrogen as energy sources. Carbon was incorporated as CO2 via the Calvin cycle, as shown by the presence of ribulosebisphosphate carboxylase activity in methanol-grown cells and by the absence of key enzymes of the ribulose monophosphate and serine pathways. In addition, incoporation of [14C]methanol into cells was diminished when cultures were incubated in gas atmospheres enriched with carbon dioxide.  相似文献

DNA polymerase from Thermus aquaticus has become a common reagent in molecular biology because of its utility in DNA amplification and DNA sequencing protocols. A simplified method is described here for isolating the recombinant Taq enzyme after overproduction in Escherichia coli. Purification requires 8 to 10 h and entails heat treating and clearing the E. coli lysate, followed by precipitation of the enzyme with polyethyleneimine and elution from Bio Rex 70 ion exchange resin in a single salt step. The resulting enzyme preparation contains a single, nearly homogeneous protein consistent with the previously established size of the Taq DNA polymerase in a yield of 40-50 mg of protein per liter of cell culture.  相似文献

本文测定了不同时期松阿扁叶蜂Acantholyda posticalis Matsumura越冬幼虫虫体、血淋。巴内氨基酸含量,并对影响幼虫抗寒的氨基酸进行了探讨。对越冬幼虫体内17种氨基酸的研究结果表明,从越冬初期至越冬期,氨基酸种类并没有发生变化,但各种氨基酸含量变化不同,丙氨酸、谷氨酸、脯氨酸、精氨酸和胱氨酸随着温度的下降呈增加趋势。幼虫虫体总氨基酸含量增幅最大的为丙氨酸,比越冬初期增加了28.8%,其次是脯氨酸、酪氨酸、苯丙氨酸,分别比越冬初期增加了9.4%、6.4%和5.4%,其他氨基酸增加不明显;幼虫血淋巴内游离氨基酸中的丙氨酸、胱氨酸和谷氨酸含量分别比越冬初期增加了94.6%、80.2%和19.6%。因此认为体内这些氨基酸含量的变化可能与低温抗寒密切相关。  相似文献

The role of interactions between chemical perturbations and biological constraints on detritivores occurring in polluted streams were investigated by analysing food absorption variation with stress. Absorption rate and efficiency of four Asellus aquaticus (L.) populations from differently polluted habitats were quantified with respect to the microbial guilds colonizing detritus. A twin tracer method was used. Detritus was microbially colonized in standard conditions and on each stream bottom to control for potential resource-independent variations among individuals. The relationship between length and weight was also determined on a random sample of individuals of each population. Differences of 14.6% in potential absorption efficiency and 11.3% in potential absorption rate were observed between populations from the least and the most polluted habitat. Actual (realized) variations were much stronger: from a minimum of a 60.1% reduction in absorption efficiency to a maximum of 93.8% for the rate. The realized food absorption and the individual weight per length showed the same pattern of variation among populations. This suggested that the availability of energy to isopods in nature was related to stream pollution and resource quality. Bottomup interactions appear to be the most relevant pathway through which chemical water pollution affects the Asellus populations studied. The potential resource-independent variations among individuals are also likely to be explained by temporal cascading of resource-mediated effects.  相似文献
