为了解共生菌对黑豆蚜蛋白质、氨基酸代谢的影响 ,用利福平处理黑豆蚜以除去其细胞内共生细菌 ,产生脱共生蚜虫。结果表明 ,被脱去共生菌的蚜虫与未经抗生素处理的正常蚜虫相比 ,7日龄时 ,脱共生蚜虫每毫克鲜重的总蛋白含量降低了 2 9% ,每毫克鲜重的游离氨基酸含量提高了 17%。对黑豆蚜取食的蚕豆苗韧皮部组织中必需氨基酸所占的比例进行分析后发现 ,蚕豆苗韧皮部组织中的必需氨基酸含量仅占 2 0 % ,而有共生菌的黑豆蚜组织中必需氨基酸已达到 4 4% ,脱共生后降低到 37% ,这些结果证明了黑豆蚜的胞内共生菌为其寄主提供了部分必需氨基酸。通过对游离氨基酸组成的分析发现 ,在测定的 17种氨基酸中 ,必需氨基酸中的苏氨酸在共生蚜虫中所占的比例为 2 1 6 % ,在脱共生蚜虫中仅为 16 7%。同样 ,非必需氨基酸中的酪氨酸和丝氨酸 ,在共生蚜虫中分别占总游离氨基酸的 8 9%和 5 6 % ,而在脱共生蚜虫中却分别升高到 2 1 1%和 13 6 %。这些结果表明 ,各种氨基酸比例的失调 ,造成了脱共生蚜虫蛋白质合成受阻和部分游离氨基酸的积累 ,并因此导致蚜虫发育和繁殖的失调。  相似文献

To evaluate the role of bacterial symbionts (Buchnera spp.) in the black bean aphids (Aphis craccivora Koch), the aphids were treated with the antibiotic, rifampicin, to eliminate their intracellular symbiotic bacteria. Analysis of protein and amino acid concentration in 7‐day‐old of aposymbiotic aphids showed that the total protein content per mg fresh weight was significantly reduced by 29%, but free amino acid titers were increased by 17%. The ratio of the essential amino acids was in general only around 20% essential amino acids in phloem sap of broad bean, whereas it was 44% and 37% in symbiotic and aposymbiotic aphids, respectively, suggesting that the composition of the free amino acids was unbalanced. For example, the essential amino acid, threonine represented 21.6% of essential amino acids in symbiotic aphids, but it was only 16.7% in aposymbiotic aphids. Likewise, two nonessential amino acids, tyrosine and serine, represented 8.9% and 5.6% of total amino acids in symbiontic aphids, respectively, but they enhanced to 21.1% and 13.6% in aposymbiotic aphids. It seems likely that the elevated free amino acid concentration in aposymbiotic aphids was caused by the limited protein anabolism as the result of the unbalanced amino acid composition.  相似文献

Sarcosine and methionine sulfoxide were investigated in several wild or laboratory-reared symbiotic and aposymbiotic strains of Sitophilus oryzae and S. zeamais. The amino acid composition of fourth-instar larvae indicated that a high level in sarcosine found together with a low level of methionine sulfoxide were biochemical characteristics of the aposymbiotic state in this genus. Nutritional experiments demonstrated that the synthesis of these two amino acids depended on dietary precursors. Since sarcosine and methionine sulfoxide are both methionine derivatives, it is therefore suggested that methionine metabolism in Sitophilus larvae might differ according to the presence or the absence of the symbiotic bacteria.  相似文献

Developmental times of symbiotic and aposymbiotic strains of the rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae were compared, in response to changes in concentration of phenylalanine or tyrosine in whole wheat flour pellets. Aposymbiotic insects were shown to require more aromatic amino acids than symbiotic insects, since a very low supply (0.1%) resulted in faster growth (11%). Incorporation results of [3H]-tyrosine during the larval and pupal stages indicated that total tyrosine intake was lower in aposymbiotic insects, but the incorporation into the cuticle of both strains did not significantly differ. It is suggested that the slower growth rate of weevils without symbiotes is due, in part, to a less efficient utilization of exogenous tyrosine (in the food) and to a lack of endogenous tyrosine (supplied by the symbiotes).  相似文献

The symbiotic bacteria Buchnera contribute to the nutrition of pea aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum, through the provision of essential amino acids which are lacking in the diet. However, chemically defined diets, containing nutritionally adequate amounts of essential amino acids, fail to rescue aposymbiotic aphids, in which the bacteria have been disrupted with antibiotics. In this study the injection of a mixture of essential amino acids into the haemocoel of aposymbiotic aphids was shown to alleviate, at least partially, the impact of symbiont loss. Specifically, the total amino acid content in the tissues of aposymbiotic aphids was reduced by approximately 40% to levels comparable with symbiotic insects, and there was a 1.7-fold increase in the number of embryos, suggesting that the availability of essential amino acids promotes aphid protein synthesis by rejuvenating the free amino acid pool of aposymbiotic aphids. In addition, a similar effect on the total amino acid content was observed when phenylalanine alone, but not glutamine, lysine or tryptophan, was injected into the haemocoel of aposymbiotic aphids, and there was also a significant increase in the number of embryos following injection of phenylalanine or tryptophan alone. The impact of amino acid injection on the embryo complement of aposymbiotic aphids was limited to an increase in the number of embryos, with no increase in basal embryo size. It is proposed that older embryos may rely on their own complement of symbiotic bacteria for essential amino acid provisioning. Taken together, the data highlight the importance of bacterial provisioning of essential amino acids, particularly the aromatic amino acids, in the intact symbiosis.  相似文献

The failure of a nutritionally balanced diet to ameliorate the impact of symbiont disruption in the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) was investigated using two approaches. The assimilation of dietary nutrients by aphids was investigated using chemically-defined diets containing 3 H-labelled inulin and 14C-labelled sucrose or amino acids. Symbiotic aphids (i.e., aphids containing their bacteria) had a high sucrose demand and assimilated 72% of sucrose ingested in the diet, whereas the assimilation of sucrose by aposymbiotic aphids (in which the bacteria had been disrupted), was significantly reduced to 47%. The assimilation of individual dietary amino acids by symbiotic aphids varied between 61 and 92%, and there was no impact on the feeding or assimilation rate when the aphids were fed a phloem sap-like diet containing a reduced amount of essential amino acids. Consequently, the absolute amount of each essential amino acid assimilated by symbiotic aphids feeding on a phloem sap-like diet was reduced by 36–59%. Aposymbiotic aphids consistently assimilated a lower proportion of ingested amino acids, and lysine in particular was poorly assimilated from the diet. In a second experiment, the allocation of free amino acids in the haemocoel to aphid embryos was investigated following microinjection of 14C-labelled amino acids. After 2 h, radiolabel could be detected at varying levels from the embryo complement of both symbiotic and aposymbiotic aphids, indicating rapid but selective uptake by the embryos. The essential amino acids phenylalanine and lysine were incorporated into the protein fraction of embryo tissues, but the rate of incorporation per unit biomass was approximately 4-fold higher in the embryos of aposymbiotic aphids, possibly reflecting increased demand due to the lack of amino acid provisioning from the symbiotic bacteria.  相似文献

The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, shows considerable geographic and temporal variability in its response to varieties of cultivated rice. N. lugens has repeatedly “adapted” to resistant rice varieties; however, the physiological changes underlying planthopper adaptation are poorly understood. Endosymbionts within planthoppers, such as yeast-like endosymbionts (YLS) could play a role as they produce essential amino acids for planthoppers. We used a full factorial study to determine how natal rice variety, exposed rice variety, YLS presence, and the number of reared generations affected nymphal development, planthopper total nitrogen content, and planthopper hydrolyzed amino acid profiles. Nymphal development was strongly influenced by a four-way interaction between the exposed rice variety, natal rice variety, number of reared generations, and YLS presence. While symbiosis improved nymphal performance in the 8th generation, it appeared to be a drain on nymphs in the 11th generation, when the aposymbiotic nymphs actually showed higher performance than the symbiotic nymphs. This suggests that the symbiotic relationship may be acting beneficially in one generation while acting as a drain during another generation. Aposymbiotic planthoppers reared for 11 generations had a higher proportional concentration of rare amino acids than those reared for 8 generations, indicating that the planthopper itself appears to improve its ability to acquire rare amino acids. Therefore, the change in amino acid composition of planthoppers suggests an underlying change in protein expression or amino acid metabolism over time.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung 1. Aufzuchtversuche an Lasioderma serricorne in Diäten mit 17 Protein- und 2 Hefepräparaten als Proteinquellen zeigten die Überlegenheit normaler Larven über aposymbiontische. 2. Entsprechende Befunde erzielten wir mit Peptonpräparaten und Caseinhydrolysaten; zum Teil vermochten sich aposymbiontisohe Larven nicht zu entwickeln. 3. In Diäten mit Gelatine wuchsen normale Larven langsam, aposymbiontische überhaupt nicht. Tryptophan verbesserte das Wachstum der ersteren und ermöglichte letzteren eine langsame Entwicklung; Histidin und Methionin blieben praktisch wirkungslos. 4. In einer Diät mit Caseinhydrolysat als Proteinquelle und Zusatz von Tryptophan in verschiedenen Konzentrationen lag das Optimum für normale Larven bei 0,4%, das für aposymbiontische bei 0,8%; 0,2 und 0,1% wurden von letzteren nicht vertragen, während normale Tiere auch in tryptophanfreien Diäten eine langsame Entwicklung zeigten. 5. Die Möglichkeit, ein künstlich hergestelltes Aminosäuregemisch als Proteinquelle zu bieten, wurde geprüft. 6. Ein Mangel nicht essentieller Aminosäuren blieb bei normalen und aposymbiontisohen Larven ohne Wirkung. Das Fehlen der essentiellen war für letztere letal, die Entwicklung normaler Tiere war mehr oder weniger stark verzögert. 7. Der Zusatz eines mit Methanol und Wasser erschöpfend extrahierten Hefepräparates hatte in Diäten mit Aminosäuregemischen als Proteinquellen Wuchsstoffwirkung; eine Zufütterung durch Hitze abgetöteter Symbionten war — in geringerem Maße — ebenfalls wirksam. 8. Die Symbionten sind in der Lage, Sulfate und Cystin als S-Quellen zur Methioninsynthese heranzuziehen, der Bedarf der Wirte wird jedoch nur teilweise gedeckt. 9. Die Befunde werden im Hinblick auf die Funktion der Symbionten diskutiert.
The role of yeastlike symbiotes of Lasioderma serricorne F. (Coleoptera, Anobiidae) in the protein metabolism of their hostsI. Growth of normal and aposymbiotic larvae in diets with proteins, protein derivates and amino acid mixtures as nitrogen sources
Summary 1. Rearing experiments with Lasioderma serricorne in diets containing 17 proteins and 2 yeast preparations as protein sources proved the superiority of normal larvae to aposymbiotic ones. 2. Similar results were obtained with peptones and casein hydrolysates; in some of these diets aposymbiotic larvae were unable to develop. 3. In diets with gelatine as protein source the development of normal larvae was greatly retarded, that of aposymbiotic ceased completely. An addition of tryptophane enabled the latter to develop slowly and improved growth of the former; histidine and methionine were ineffective. 4. In a diet containing a casein hydrolysate as protein source the optimum concentration of added tryptophane was found to be 0,4% for normal, 0,8% for aposymbiotic larvae. Concentrations of 0.2% and less were insufficient for the latter, while normal ones were able to grow slowly also in tryptophane-free diets. 5. Growth conditions in a diet containing an artificial mixture of 19 amino acids were studied. 6. A lack of single not essential amino acids did not influence both normal and aposymbiotic larvae. That of essential ones was letal for the latter and delayed growth of the former to different degrees. The symbiotic fungi must therefore be able to furnish amino acids to their hosts. 7. A yeast preparation thoroughly extracted with methanol and water showed a growth promoting effect in diets containing complete amino acid mixtures as protein sources; an addition of artificially cultivated symbiotic fungi killed by heat showed the same effect to a lower degree. 8. The symbiotes are able to use anorganic and cystine sulphur for methionine synthesis. This amino acid is furnished to the hosts in a degree not fully covering their requirement. 9. The results are discussed with regard to the function of symbiotic organisms in phytophagous insects.

The unique mutualism between corals and their photosynthetic zooxanthellae (Symbiodinium spp.) is the driving force behind functional assemblages of coral reefs. However, the respective roles of hosts and Symbiodinium in this endosymbiotic association, particularly in response to environmental challenges (e.g., high sea surface temperatures), remain unsettled. One of the key obstacles is to produce and maintain aposymbiotic coral hosts for experimental purposes. In this study, a simple and gentle protocol to generate aposymbiotic coral hosts (Isopora palifera and Stylophora pistillata) was developed using repeated incubation in menthol/artificial seawater (ASW) medium under light and in ASW in darkness, which depleted more than 99% of Symbiodinium from the host within 4∼8 days. As indicated by the respiration rate, energy metabolism (by malate dehydrogenase activity), and nitrogen metabolism (by glutamate dehydrogenase activity and profiles of free amino acids), the physiological and biochemical performances of the menthol-induced aposymbiotic corals were comparable to their symbiotic counterparts without nutrient supplementation (e.g., for Stylophora) or with a nutrient supplement containing glycerol, vitamins, and a host mimic of free amino acid mixture (e.g., for Isopora). Differences in biochemical responses to menthol-induced bleaching between Stylophora and Isopora were attributed to the former digesting Symbiodinium rather than expelling the algae live as found in the latter species. Our studies showed that menthol could successfully bleach corals and provided aposymbiotic corals for further exploration of coral-alga symbioses.  相似文献

利用全纯人工饲料饲喂技术,研究了缺失不同氨基酸对高温(35℃)处理后的缺菌褐飞虱Nilaparvata lugens Stål相对生长速度、体内共生菌数量的影响,发现10种必需氨基酸对缺菌褐飞虱生长的影响明显大于10种非必需氨基酸,饲料中必需氨基酸的缺少对褐飞虱(特别是高温处理褐飞虱)体内共生菌数量有一定的刺激作用。分析了缺菌试虫体内氨基酸组成和转氨酶活性的变化规律,发现在摄取的氨基酸营养相同的条件下(用全纯饲料D-97饲养),高温处理试虫体内蛋白质氨基酸组成无明显变化,而游离氨基酸总量明显上升,且必需氨基酸所占比例显著下降,其中组氨酸(His)、异亮氨酸(Ile)、亮氨酸(Leu)、赖氨酸(Lys)、蛋氨酸(Met)和苯丙氨酸(Phe)摩尔百分含量均显著下降,表明必需氨基酸的相对缺乏可能是体内蛋白质合成受阻的一个重要原因,推测这可能是由于试虫体内共生菌数减少致使所合成的必需氨基酸减少而引起。处理试虫体内谷氨酰胺合成酶(GS)和丙氨酸氨基转移酶(ALT)活性明显提高,天冬氨酸氨基转移酶(AST)活性显著降低,结合游离氨基酸中谷氨酰胺(Gln)显著增多,推测类酵母共生菌可能利用谷氨酰胺等为原料进行必需氨基酸的合成。  相似文献

Amino acids emitted and extracted from surface-sterilized larvae and adults of Heterodera glycines were identified by paper chromatography and quantitatively analyzed by column chromatography. Five amino acids (alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine and serine) were emitted by H. glycines larvae and eight others (asparagine, glutamine, leucine/isoleucine, lysine, methionine sulfoxide, threonine, tyrosine, valine/methionine) were found in extracts from crushed larvae.In addition to the amino acids emitted or extracted from larvae, four others were emitted by adults (γ-aminobutyric acid, histidine, phenylalanine, and proline). Four different amino acids (arginine, cystathionine, hydroxyproline, and ornithine) were found only in the extract from crushed adults. Greater quantities of alanine, aspartic acid and glycine were emitted than could be detected in nematode extracts suggesting selective emission.Subsamples of nematode populations were taken from growing plants 19, 26, 33, and 40 days after inoculation and extracted to determine whether changes in specific amino acid content correlated with aging. Proline content shifted most, increasing from 4.1% to 21.5% of the total amino acid complement from the 19th to the 40th days.  相似文献

To explore the effect of rearing-plant species on the contribution of the symbiotic bacterium, Buchnera, to aphid performance, larvae of Aphis fabae that contained the bacteria (symbiotic aphids) and larvae experimentally deprived of the bacteria (aposymbiotic aphids) were reared on 16 plant species. Mortality of aphids was low on most plant species. The relative growth rate (RGR) of the larvae varied with plant species, and was generally depressed by elimination of the bacteria; the mean values of RGR varied between 0 and 0.29 μg μg−1 day−1 for symbiotic aphids and 0 and 0.17 μg μg−1 day−1 for aposymbiotic aphids. The extent to which RGR was depressed by aposymbiosis varied significantly between plant species, suggesting that aphid host plant may influence the contribution of the bacteria to plant utilisation. It is proposed that the bacteria may be particularly important on plants with phloem sap of high amino acid content of low quality, i.e. low concentrations of essential amino acids. All phloem‐feeding Homoptera possess symbiotic microorganisms. Although the phylogenetic position and anatomical location of the micro‐ organisms differ, the underlying theme of the symbiosis is the same; the microorganisms improve the nutritional quality of the diet through the provision of essential amino acids. The symbiosis has been well documented in aphids, but little information is available from other homopteran groups. The impact of the loss of bacterial symbionts in the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris and eukaryotic yeast‐like symbionts in the Asian rice brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens Stål was examined in parallel. The weight and relative growth rate of aphids and planthoppers was significantly reduced by symbiont loss, and characteristic features of aposymbiotic pea aphids, so‐called ‘metabolic signatures’, were, for the first time, observed in aposymbiotic N. lugens. For example, the amount of protein per unit fresh weight was reduced by 26 and 10%, and the free amino acid levels increased 1.8‐ and 1.4‐fold, in aposymbiotic A. pisum and N. lugens, respectively. In addition, the concentration of the amino acid glutamine was elevated in the tissues of aposymbiotic insects. The data are discussed in the context of our current understanding of the nutritional role of the symbiosis and the mechanisms of nitrogen metabolism in the two insect species. It is concluded that the metabolic adjustments of the insects to symbiont loss are broadly equivalent.  相似文献

The protein anabolic effect of branched chain amino acids was studied in isolated quarter diaphragms of rats. Protein synthesis was estimated by measuring tyrosine incorporation into muscle proteins in vitro. Tyrosine release during incubation with cycloheximide served as an index of protein degradation. In muscles from normal rats the addition of 0.5 mM leucine stimulated protein synthesis 36--38% (P less than 0.01), while equimolar isoleucine or valine, singly or in combination were ineffective. The three branched chain amino acids together stimulated no more than leucine alone. The product of leucine transamination, alpha-keto-isocaproate, did not stmino norborane-2-carboxylic acid (a leucine analogue) were ineffective. Leucine and isoleucine stimulated protein synthesis in muscles from diabetic rats.Leucine, isoleucine, valine and the norbornane amino acid but not alpha-ketoisocaproate or beta-hydroxybutyrate decreased the concentration of free tyrosine in tissues during incubation with cycloheximide; tyrosine release into the medium did not decrease significantly. Leucine caused a small decrease in total tyrosine release, (measured as the sum of free tyrosine in tissues and media), suggesting inhibition of protein degradation. The data suggest that leucine may be rate limiting for protein synthesis in muscles. The branched chain amino acids may exert a restraining effect on muscle protein catabolism during prolonged fasting and diabetes.  相似文献

Copper is a common marine pollutant yet its effects on symbiotic cnidarians are largely understudied. To further understand the impact of elevated copper concentrations on marine symbiotic organisms, toxicity tests were conducted using the model sea anemone, Aiptasia pallida, with and without its zooxanthellae symbiont. Symbiotic and aposymbiotic A. pallida were exposed to sublethal copper concentrations (0, 5, 15, and 50 µg/L) for 7 d and copper accumulation, behavior, and the activity of the oxidative stress enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) were measured. Additionally, acute 96-h toxicity tests were conducted to determine LC50 values of the organisms after copper exposure. Both symbiotic and aposymbiotic A. pallida rapidly accumulated copper in a time and dose dependent manner. However, higher copper concentrations accumulated in the aposymbiotic as compared to the symbiotic A. pallida. In response to the highest two copper exposures (15 and 50 µg/L) symbiotic A. pallida upregulated CAT activity to combat the damaging effects of hydrogen peroxide. Contrary to these results, SOD activity significantly decreased during the highest copper exposure, when compared to controls. CAT activity was not detected and SOD was substantially (> 10 fold) reduced in aposymbiotic A. pallida, suggesting that the zooxanthellae are associated with the oxidative stress response. Copper exposure as low as 5 µg/L caused tentacle retraction and increased mucus production in both symbiotic and aposymbiotic anemones. The LC50 values for symbiotic and aposymbiotic A. pallida exposed to copper for 96 h were 148 µg/L (95% confidence interval = 126.4, 173.8) and 206 µg/L (95% confidence interval = 175.2, 242.2), respectively. Understanding the varying responses of symbiotic and aposymbiotic A. pallida to copper stress may advance our comprehension of the functional roles of zooxanthellae and host. Although the mechanism of copper toxicity has not been fully elucidated, it is clear that A. pallida accumulate copper and are sensitive, as effects were detected at environmentally relevant copper concentrations. Likewise, A. pallida may be useful in biomonitoring copper polluted environments.  相似文献

Chemical composition of newborn larvae, muscle larvae and adult Trichinella spiralis. International Journal for Parasitology16: 455–460. The chemical composition of newborn larvae (NBL), muscle larvae (ML) and 4-day-old and 7-day-old adult Trichinella spiralis were compared. Total protein constituted 44.1% of the dry wt of ML, 36.9% of NBL and 30.3% of 7-day-old adult worms. Glycogen content was 16.1% of worm dry wt in ML and 7.8% in NBL and 7.2% of worm dry wt in adults. Trehalose content was 5.2% in NBL, 8.3% in ML and 8.7% in 7-day-old adult worms. Significantly lower levels of trehalose and glycogen were found in 4-day-old worms than were present in 7-day-old worms. Free glucose amounted to 0.1% of dry wt in ML, 0.37% in NBL and 0.87% in 7-day-old adults. RNA accounted for 3.5% of the dry wt of ML, 3.2% of the dry wt of 7-day-old adults and 1.1% of the dry wt of NBL. The DNA content of NBL was 0.23% of worm dry wt, in ML 0.48% of worm dry wt and 0.51% of worm dry wt in 7-day-old adults. The three parasite stages examined agreed closely with regard to types of amino acids in the free pool. Exceptions were as follows: NBL lacked taurine which both adults and ML contained; adults lacked methionine which both ML and NBL contained; and, trace amounts of cysteine were present in ML but absent from the other two stages.  相似文献

【目的】明确弗氏柠檬酸杆菌Citrobacter freundi和产酸克雷伯氏菌Klebsiella oxytoca两种肠道共生细菌对斑翅果蝇Drosophila suzukii生长发育和物质代谢的影响。【方法】以正常饲养条件下的斑翅果蝇、构建的斑翅果蝇无菌品系以及弗氏柠檬酸杆菌和产酸克雷伯氏菌单一共生菌感染的斑翅果蝇品系为材料,检测不同品系间斑翅果蝇的卵孵化率、3龄幼虫体重和化蛹率;测定不同斑翅果蝇品系3龄幼虫体内蛋白质、氨基酸、糖原和游离脂肪酸等代谢物的含量及超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)、过氧化氢酶(CAT)和过氧化物酶(POD)的活力。【结果】正常饲养条件下的斑翅果蝇卵孵化率、3龄幼虫体重、化蛹率及3龄幼虫体内蛋白质的含量均高于其他斑翅果蝇品系,且无菌品系中的最低。弗氏柠檬酸杆菌和产酸克雷伯氏菌感染的斑翅果蝇品系3龄幼虫中的氨基酸和糖原含量均低于斑翅果蝇无菌品系和正常品系。弗氏柠檬酸杆菌感染斑翅果蝇品系3龄幼虫体内游离脂肪酸的含量较其他品系的也降到最低。弗氏柠檬酸杆菌和产酸克雷伯氏菌感染斑翅果蝇品系3龄幼虫体内POD活力显著高于无菌品系和正常品系,而CAT活力显著低于无菌品系。【结论...  相似文献

  • 1.1. Development times, fertilities and weights of symbiotic and aposymbiotic strains of the rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae in response to single omissions of seven vitamins and choline were studied.
  • 2.2. No strict requirement for choline could be demonstrated: development times and weights were comparable to diets with or without choline, but the presence of choline increased fertility of the symbiotic strain on vitamin-deficient diets.
  • 3.3. The 0.02% concentration used in these experiments may be too high since it resulted in a lower fertility of the aposymbiotic strain.
  • 4.4. The results indicated that niacin could be synthesized by the weevils.
  • 5.5. Thiamine, folic acid and pyridoxine were found to be required in the diet of both strains but the latter two may be supplied in part by symbiotes since a first symbiotic generation was obtained.
  • 6.6. Pantothenic acid, biotin and riboflavin were only required by aposymbiotic weevils: their omission from the diet did not modify the development of symbiotic insects.
  • 7.7. It is therefore suggested that these three vitamins are supplied by symbiotes.

Free amino acid concentrations in plasma of larval and adult Hydropsyche betteni and Cheumatopsyche pettiti were determined. Free amino acids in whole-body homogenates of these two species were also investigated.Larval haemoplasm of both species contained high concentrations of serine, proline, alanine, lysine, valine, threonine and arginine. Total free amino acid concentrations were consistently higher in C. pettiti larvae (33.1 mM) than in H. betteni larvae (24.6 mM).Haemoplasm from adult specimens of H. betteni contained high concentrations of serine and proline, followed by alanine, valine, lysine and histidine. Serine was found in very high concentrations in plasma from C. pettiti adults, followed by proline, glytamic acid, histidine and arginine. The mean total concentration of free amino acids was higher in C. pettiti adults (18.6 mM) than in H. betteni adults (13.3 mM).Comparison of free amino acids from haemoplasm and whole-body homogenates suggests that concentrations of free amino acids in body tissues differ from those present in plasma for these two insects.  相似文献
