Contaminated soils are subject to diurnal and seasonal temperature variations during on‐site ex‐situ bioremediation processes. We assessed how diurnal temperature variations similar to that in summer at the site from which petroleum hydrocarbon‐contaminated soil was collected affect the soil microbial community and the extent of biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons compared with constant temperature regimes. Microbial community analyses for 16S rRNA and alkB genes by pyrosequencing indicated that the microbial community for soils incubated under diurnal temperature variation from 5°C to 15°C (VART5‐15) evolved similarly to that for soils incubated at constant temperature of 15°C (CST15). In contrast, under a constant temperature of 5°C (CST5), the community evolved significantly different. The extent of biodegradation of C10–C16 hydrocarbons in the VART5‐15 systems was 48%, comparable with the 41% biodegradation in CST15 systems, but significantly higher than CST5 systems at 11%. The enrichment of Gammaproteobacteria was observed in the alkB gene‐harbouring communities in VART5‐15 and CST15 but not in CST5 systems. However, the Actinobacteria was abundant at all temperature regimes. The results suggest that changes in microbial community composition as a result of diurnal temperature variations can significantly influence petroleum hydrocarbon bioremediation performance in cold regions.  相似文献

Optimal-life-history theory is based on the relative benefit of immediate versus future reproduction. We apply this theory to the life-history tactics of female Thalassoma bifasciatum, a sex-changing coral-reef fish. Local social structure varies in this species and influences a female's chances of achieving high future reproductive success as a territorial terminal-phase male. We predicted that female life-history allocations would be flexible and responsive to variation in future reproductive prospects. We altered population size structure on four reefs, removing large fish and adding small fish. These alterations enhanced the residual reproductive value of the remaining larger female residents. The predicted response to the manipulation was a reduction in reproductive activity and an increase in growth. Our results do not support this hypothesis. Possible interpretations are that: 1) the theory, or our application of the theory, is flawed; 2) female Thalassoma are unresponsive to changes in future reproductive prospects; or 3) the design of our study was ineffectual at detecting a response. We report here an approach to the study of adaptive life-history strategies that deserves implementation in other systems.  相似文献

Models of human altruism suggest that decisions to help are influenced by assessments of both potential recipients' need state and their competence, as high need increases the value of gifts received, and competent recipients can most effectively use and repay gifts. Need and competence are often inversely related, however, raising the question of how altruists weigh these competing sources of information. We examined the impact of a nonverbal display (expansive posture) that, by signaling high status, simultaneously cues both low need and high competence, on actual altruistic behaviors: donations of financial aid to needy individuals. Across three studies using ecologically valid data drawn from a micro-lending charity website, men who displayed expansive posture while requesting aid faced a substantial reduction in the amount of aid they received; this effect held controlling for a range of relevant covariates. These findings demonstrate that: (a) altruists bias their giving toward those in greater need rather those who may be more competent, and (b) subtle nonverbal cues of status influence altruistic decision-making.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Altruistic behavior is defined as helping others at a cost to oneself and a lowered fitness. The lower fitness implies that altruists should be selected against, which is in contradiction with their widespread presence is nature. Present models of selection for altruism (kin or multilevel) show that altruistic behaviors can have 'hidden' advantages if the 'common good' produced by altruists is restricted to some related or unrelated groups. These models are mostly deterministic, or assume a frequency dependent fitness. RESULTS: Evolutionary dynamics is a competition between deterministic selection pressure and stochastic events due to random sampling from one generation to the next. We show here that an altruistic allele extending the carrying capacity of the habitat can win by increasing the random drift of "selfish" alleles. In other terms, the fixation probability of altruistic genes can be higher than those of a selfish ones, even though altruists have a smaller fitness. Moreover when populations are geographically structured, the altruists advantage can be highly amplified and the fixation probability of selfish genes can tend toward zero. The above results are obtained both by numerical and analytical calculations. Analytical results are obtained in the limit of large populations. CONCLUSIONS: The theory we present does not involve kin or multilevel selection, but is based on the existence of random drift in variable size populations. The model is a generalization of the original Fisher-Wright and Moran models where the carrying capacity depends on the number of altruists.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To describe the mental health of a community sample of carers of elderly people with dementia, depression, or physical disability and to compare that with the mental health of other adults living in the household and of those living alone. DESIGN--Assessment of psychiatric morbidity and physical disability with standardised questionnaire in randomly selected enumeration districts; subjects were interviewed at home. SETTING--London Borough of Islington. SUBJECTS--700 people aged > or = 65 and other coresidents. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE--Depression measured with standardised interview. RESULTS--The prevalence of depression was not significantly higher in carers overall (15%) than in coresidents (11%). Being a woman carer was a significant predictor of psychiatric illness. Depression was more common in the carers of people with a psychiatric disorder than in coresidents (24% v 11%, P < 0.05) and in those living alone (19%). Depression was most common (47%) in women carers of people with dementia. CONCLUSION--The increase in psychiatric morbidity reported in carers of people with psychiatric disorders may reflect the lack of a confiding relationship.  相似文献

Urbanization along the eastern seaboard of Australia has increased the potential for conflict between humans and wildlife. The northern suburbs of Sydney are home to the southern brown (Isoodon obesulus) and the long-nosed bandicoot (Perameles nasuta). Both are known to enter yards of home owners causing a disturbance to yard plantings and an interaction with domestic pets. Understanding the driving factors behind the public’s perception of bandicoots will enable wildlife managers to develop effective and socially acceptable conservation strategies. Six hundred and thirty questionnaires were distributed to the residents bordering Ku-ring-gai Chase and Garigal National Park in Sydney, Australia, to assess the sources of conflict. Eighty-three percent of respondents had experienced bandicoot interactions and 27% had experienced interactions on a daily basis. This interaction with bandicoots influenced respondents’ perception of a bandicoot as a nuisance or pest. The age of the resident and pet ownership status also influenced respondents’ attitudes. Contrary to anecdotal reports, there was an overall positive response from the community. The information gained from this survey will inform the development community-based management strategies for the bandicoots of northern Sydney. Communicated by W. Lutz  相似文献

Summary A marginal fitness theorem is derived for the allocation of a limited resource among alternative activities that have effects on the fitness of an individual. The marginal advantage theorem states that at the evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS), the marginal gains from increasing each of the allocations (expressed as partial derivatives of the fitness advantage of a rare mutant) are equal. The theorem is true for all proportional allocations (a + b + c + ...=j), regardless of the number of allocations, the nature of the response curves describing the direct effects of the allocations [f(a), etc.], or the way the effects of different allocations combine into fitness. The theorem is extended to size-number compromises and packaging strategies. The marginal advantage theorem is used to derive general theorems about the marginal effects of allocations [f (a), etc.] at the ESS and matching rules concerned with the total fitness to cost ratios of allocations at the ESS. The marginal advantage theorem is applicable to diverse allocation strategies, and provides a method for obtaining ESS allocations for any number of allocations and their components.  相似文献

Chemical properties of waters and their seasonal changes were studied in Mizorogaike Pond, a system of pond and floating mat. The following six sites including contrasting habitats and water conditions were monitored to assess nutrient dynamics in the system: 1) a pool on the mat, 2) margin of aSphagnum cuspidatum community, 3) an artificial ‘well’ (water layer beneath the floating mat), 4) aMenyanthes trifoliata community in a hollow, and 5) & 6) two sites in the open water. On the floating mat, the water around theSphagnum community had lower pH values, while that in theM. trifoliata community had higher pH values. This difference was related to the influence of flood water, the extent of which was determined by the microtopography. Seasonal changes in water chemistry on the mat suggested that pond water flooding the mat in late autumn and winter is important for the nutrient supply to the mat surface vegetation in this system. Water chemistry of the ‘well’ suggested that the diffusion of inorganic nitrogen occurs from beneath the peat layer. Two types of cluster analysis based on the mean values for chemical variables and the patterns of fluctuation in these variables were performed. The six sites were classified into similar groups which were identified by water type (pool, hollow, well and open water) by both types of analysis. The results showed that a common kind of perturbation should operate in determining the status of nutrient dynamics in the various water types.  相似文献

The linear interaction energy (LIE) approach has been applied to estimate the binding free energies of representative sets of HIV-1 RT and β-Secretase inhibitors, using both molecular dynamics (MD) and tethered energy minimization sampling protocols with the OPLS-AA potential, using a range of solvation methodologies. Generalized Born (GB), ‘shell’ and periodic boundary condition (PBC) solvation were used, the latter with reaction field (RF) electrostatics. Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) and GB continuum electrostatics schemes were applied to the simulation trajectories for each solvation type to estimate the electrostatic ligand-water interaction energy in both the free and bound states. Reasonable agreement of the LIE predictions was obtained with respect to experimental binding free energy estimates for both systems: for instance, ‘PB’ fits on MD trajectories carried out with PBC solvation and RF electrostatics led to models with standard errors of 1.11 and 1.03 kcal mol−1 and coefficients of determination, r 2 of 0.76 and 0.75 for the HIV-1 RT and β-Secretase sets. However, it was also found that results from MD sampling using PBC solvation provided only slightly better fits than from simulations using shell or Born solvation or tethered energy minimization sampling. The positive effects of the tube dwelling polychaete Lanice conchilega for the associated benthic community emphasizes this bio-engineer’s habitat structuring capacity (Rabaut et al. in Estuar Coastal Shelf Sci, 2007). Therefore, L. conchilega aggregations are often referred to as reefs. The reef building capacity of ecosystem engineers is important for marine management as the recognition as reef builder will increase the protected status the concerned species. To classify as reefs however, bio-engineering activities need to significantly alter several habitat characteristics: elevation, sediment consolidation, spatial extent, patchiness, reef builder density, biodiversity, community structure, longevity and stability [guidelines to apply the EU reef-definition by Hendrick and Foster-Smith (J Mar Biol Assoc UK 86:665–677, 2006)]. This study investigates the physical and temporal characteristics of high density aggregations of L. conchilega. Results show that the elevation and sediment consolidation of the biogenic mounds was significantly higher compared to the surrounding unstructured sediment. Areas with L. conchilega aggregations tend to be extensive and patchiness is high (coverage 5–18%). The discussion of present study evaluates whether L. conchilega aggregations can be considered as reefs (discussing physical, biological and temporal characteristics). Individual aggregations were found to persist for several years if yearly renewal of existing aggregations through juvenile settlement occurred. This renewal is enhanced by local hydrodynamic changes and availability of attaching structures (adult tubes). We conclude that the application of the EU definition for reefs provides evidence that all physical and biological characteristics are present to classify L. conchilega as a reef builder. For temporal characteristics, this study shows several mechanisms exist for reefs to persist for a longer period of time. However, a direct evidence of long-lived individual reefs does not exist. As a range of aggregation development exists, ‘reefiness’ is not equal for all aggregations and a scoring table to quantify L. conchilega reefiness is presented.  相似文献

The equation for the fitness requirements for the evolution of altruism by diploid workers in haplodiploid species was derived from the model. of Scudo & Ghiselin (1975). When the benefit to a family is proportional to the number of altruists, the constraints on fitness were found to be the same as for haploid altruists in haplodiploid species and for workers of ether sex in diploid species, in contrast to the equation given by Scudo & Ghiselin (1975). With this correction, their results are now in agreement both with comparable allele frequency models and with kin selection games theory. The general condition for evolution of altruism under this model, when benefits are not necessarily proportional to the number of altruists, was also derived. The result appears to differ from games theory predictions, but this is solely because the basic assumptions are not comparable. Altruism is less likely to arise under these conditions, which are less favorable for altruism at gene frequencies above 0·33.  相似文献

Altruism can evolve through assortation if the selfish advantage of egoistic individuals is outcompeted by the benefits of mutual cooperation between altruists. This selection process is possible if (a) individuals can distinguish altruists from egoists and (b) altruists cooperate electively with other altruists, leaving egoists no chance but to mingle with each other. This study investigates whether these two conditions are fulfilled in a natural setting. One hundred twenty-two students of six secondary school classes (age 10 to 19 years) played an anonymous dictator game, which functioned as a measure of altruism. Afterwards and unannounced, the students had to estimate their classmates' decisions and did so better than chance. Sociometry revealed that the accuracy of predictions depended on social closeness. Friends and disliked classmates were judged more accurately than liked classmates or those met with indifference. Moreover, altruists were friends with more altruistic persons than were egoists. The results confirm the existence of the two prerequisites for the evolution of altruism through assortation: the predictability of altruistic behavior and the association of altruists.  相似文献

Societies rely on individual contributions to sustain public goods that benefit the entire community. Several mechanisms, that specify how individuals change their decisions based on past experiences, have been proposed to explain how altruists are not outcompeted by selfish counterparts. A key aspect of such strategy updates involves a comparison of an individual''s latest payoff with that of a random neighbour. In reality, both the economic and social milieu often shapes cooperative behaviour. We propose a new decision heuristic, where the propensity of an individual to cooperate depends on the local strategy environment in which she is embedded as well as her wealth relative to that of her neighbours. Our decision-making model allows cooperation to be sustained and also explains the results of recent experiments on social dilemmas in dynamic networks. Final cooperation levels depend only on the extent to which the strategy environment influences altruistic behaviour but are largely unaffected by network restructuring. However, the extent of wealth inequality in the community is affected by a subtle interplay between the environmental influence on a person''s decision to contribute and the likelihood of reshaping social ties, with wealth-inequality levels rising with increasing likelihood of network restructuring in some situations.  相似文献

The slow‐growth‐high‐mortality hypothesis proposes that increased development time in arthropods feeding on suboptimal food may result in an increased vulnerability to natural enemies. We measured the development time of the forest caterpillar Orgyia leucostigma J.E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae: Orgyiini) on two of its host plants and used a 7‐year database on parasitism of this species to test the slow‐growth‐high‐mortality hypothesis. We found that female O. leucostigma developed faster when fed on willow (Salix nigra Marsh) than when fed on box elder (Acer negundo L.). However, only one of the parasitoids of the parasitoid community that attack these larvae followed the prediction of the slow‐growth‐high‐mortality hypothesis. Overall parasitism of O. leucostigma on willow was greater than in box elder, contradicting the slow‐growth‐high‐mortality hypothesis prediction. This is the first test of the hypothesis to consider parasitism by several species in the parasitoid community attacking a free‐feeding herbivore on two distantly related plant species.  相似文献

A theory for describing evolution as adaptive walks by a finite population with M walkers (M ≥ 1) on an anisotropic Mt. Fuji-type fitness landscape is presented, from a thermodynamical point of view. Introducing the ‘free fitness’ as the sum of a fitness term and an entropy term and ‘evolutionary force’ as the gradient of free fitness on a fitness coordinate, we demonstrate that the behavior of these theoretical walkers is almost consistent with the thermodynamical schemes. The major conclusions are as follows: (1) an adaptive walk (=evolution) is driven by an evolutionary force in the direction in which free fitness increases; (2) the expectation of the climbing rate obeys an equation analogous to the Einstein relation in Brownian motion; (3) the standard deviation of the climbing rate is a quantity analogous to the mean thermal energy of a particle, kT (×constant). In addition, on the interpretation that the walkers climb the landscape by absorbing ‘fitness information’ from the surroundings, we succeeded in quantifying the fitness information and formulating a macroscopic scheme from an informational point of view.  相似文献

Abstract While it is undeniable that owned domestic cats Felis catus (Mammalia: Felidae) kill large numbers of wildlife, it is contentious if this has significant impacts on wildlife populations. Under the precautionary principle such uncertainty does not preclude measures to reduce putative risk, but action should follow consultation with stakeholders. To initiate such consultation for the City of Armadale, Western Australia, we surveyed urban and rural residents to determine their opinions regarding putative impacts of owned cats on wildlife and the acceptability of proposed regulations. Key statements accepted by 70% or more of respondents, irrespective of their residence, gender or cat ownership status, included: (i) there is a need to regulate owned domestic cats; (ii) the presence of cats in nature reserves is harmful to wildlife; (iii) cats not owned by licensed breeders should be desexed; and (iv) local councils should be empowered to restrict the maximum number of cats per household. Seventy per cent or more of owners agreed to keep their cats on their property from sunset to sunrise and to register them if these measures became compulsory. All groups except urban men also indicated 70% or greater willingness to keep their cats on their property constantly if required. However, fewer than 40% of owners supported empowering local councils to enforce cat‐free zones. In this community, cat regulation excluding cat‐free zones should enjoy support. Similar approaches should be effective wherever the environmental impacts of owned domestic cats are debated, because compliance with such regulations should be high.  相似文献

We sought to clarify on the hitherto unresolved role of N-terminal transmembrane segments (TMS) of cytochrome P450 (CYP) and its’ reductase (CPR) in protein interaction/catalysis. TMS analyses show little evolutionary conservation in CYPs. The conserved CPR’s TMS poses limited scope for predictable/consistent hetero-recognition with the wide bevy of CYPs’ TMS, as evident from preliminary analyses and TMhit server predictions for inter-helical binding. Further, experimentations with four different CPR preparations (preps) and two liver microsomal CYPs (2C9 and 2E1) shows that the hydroxylated product formation rate is not quantitatively correlated to the extent of integrity of the CPR N-terms. Incorporation of cytochrome b 5 in some reactions afforded similar rates while employing either fully intact or partially intact CPR. A survey of literature shows that liver microsomal CYPs function quite well even without the TMS or with significantly altered TMS. These observations negate the hypothesis that N-term TMS of CPR or CYP is obligatory for CYP–CPR interaction and catalysis. Also, in CYP2E1-mediated hydroxylation of para-nitrophenol, the extent of intactness or truncation did not significantly affect the CPR preps’ catalytic role at very low or high substrate concentrations. To interpret these results, we draw support from recently published research on reduced nicotinamide adenide dinucleotide phosphate oxidase (Takac et al., J Biol Chem, 286:13304–13313, 2011) and from our pertinent earlier works. We infer that CPR’ free TMS segment could alter the diffusible reactive oxygen species’ dynamics in the microenvironment, thereby altering the reaction outcome. Based on the evidence, we conclude that TMS merely facilitates “interaction/catalysis” by anchoring the CYP and CPR in the lipid interface.  相似文献

We examined food utilization in a community of aphidophagous hoverfly larvae (Diptera: Syrphidae and Chamaemyiidae) in open lands in an urban habitat in central Japan for 3 years. The community consisted of 17 hoverfly species feeding on 20 aphid species occurring on 14 species of dominant herbaceous plants. In terms of larval prey preference, the dominant eight species of hoverfly were categorized into three groups: a polyphagous ‘generalist’ group consisting of four species,Episyrphus balteatus, Betasyrphus serarius, Syrphus vitripennis andSphaerophoria sp.; an oligophagous ‘specialist’ group consisting of three species,Metasyrphus hakiensis, Dideoides latus andParagus hemorrhous; andLeucopis puncticornis, which showed a preference for two aphid species on the plantTorilis scabra. The prey aphids of the second group have behavioral or morphological defense mechanisms that are effective for preventing attacks by generalist hoverflies; two prey aphids are aggressive toward generalist predators and the others are protected by ant-attendance. The specialist hoverflies seem to be adapted to overcome these defense mechanisms. The prey ranges overlapped little between the generalist and the specialist groups, while those within the generalist group overlapped greatly.  相似文献
