The mesozooplankton community at the north-western Iberian shelf break was studied among adjacent oceanographic regimes (including upwelling, stratification and anticyclonic eddies) during 17 days in autumn 2009. Zooplankton sampling locations were determined in situ, after identifying the oceanographic regimes from CTD profiles performed over the continental shelf and upper slope. Zooplankton samples were sorted indentifying taxonomically the main zooplankton groups, from phylum to subclass. Copepods were the most abundant group (ind m?3) in all stations, followed by appendicularians, doliolids and siphonophores. The mesozooplankton community was significantly different amongst oceanographic conditions. Meroplankton abundance was higher in upwelling stations; particularly lamellibranchia, polychaeta and bryozoan larvae abundance, and decreased from early to late upwelling conditions. Medusae and chaetognata were found exclusively under the latter oceanographic regime. However, dissimilarity between the oceanographic conditions was mostly based on the varying contribution of the four most common groups.  相似文献

Estimates of carbohydrate assimilation within the mesozooplanktoncompartment are a fundamental concern in oceanography becausethey give a general expression of the biologically-regulatedincorporation of metabolic fuel produced from inorganic nutrientsby phytoplankton in the sea. A new tool is proposed for theassessment of such processes. It is based on the measurementof the activity of an enzyme, pyruvate kinase (PK), on samplesof the whole mesozooplankton community. Here, the results arepresented of an early attempt at such an implementation in theBay of Biscay (north-east Atlantic) in springtime. A main areasituated in front of an estuary (Gironde) has been extensivelystudied—the same sampling grid was covered on three occasions(two 20 day time lags between each). Strong mesozooplanktonPK activities were related to high values of nitrates or chlorophylla; the inverse was also true. A significant correlation hasbeen found between thermal stratification and enzyme activity. On a brooder scale, in the southern part of the Bay of Biscaycontinental shelf, the overall significant influence of de-saltedwater coming from rivers was revealed by spatial variationsin mesozooplankton PK activities. The whole dataset suggeststhat this new tool should be potentially very useful in certainfuture studies, especially in fisheries oceanography which oftenrequires characterization of mesoscale features.  相似文献

We investigated phytoplankton biomass, assemblage structure and production along an environmental gradient to evaluate if chlorophyll-a (as proxy for biomass) and primary production peaked under conditions hypothesised to favour phytoplankton growth. During Spring 2003, a wide area from shallow estuarine waters to the shelf slope off the Río de la Plata was sampled and routine measurements included CTD profiles, nutrients, chlorophyll-a, phytoplankton composition and abundance, seston and organic matter loads, downwelling light and, at selected stations, production versus irradiance experiments. Spatial differences in abiotic variables suggested distinct hydrographic zones that differed in phytoplankton biomass and productivity. Chlorophyll-a was highest under estuarine influence and peaked at low salinity when strong stratification developed in the outer estuary, and was minimum at the shelf break and slope. In that area, however, relatively high chlorophyll-a was associated to oceanographic fronts and to the occurrence of Sub Antarctic water within the photic depth range. Productivity was maximum in shallow waters, but biomass-specific productivity peaked at the outer shelf in oceanographic fronts or in upwelled Sub Antarctic waters. Over shelf and slope waters productivity and biomass were not tightly coupled, as indicated by situations of high biomass and low productivity (Station 9), low biomass and high productivity (Station 10), or both high biomass and productivity (Station 22). Ordination analysis of phytoplankton taxa suggested that assemblages changed gradually along the environmental gradient and correlated to abiotic variables defining geographic zones. Overall results were consistent with an interpretation that phytoplankton biomass and growth were modulated by light in estuarine and coastal waters, and by hydrographic processes on the continental shelf and slope. This paper establishes the spawning habitat of the Brazilian sardine Sardinella brasiliensis and investigates the spatial variability of egg density and its relation with oceanographic conditions in the shelf of the south‐east Brazil Bight (SBB). The spawning habitats of S. brasiliensis have been defined in terms of spatial models of egg density, temperature–salinity plots, quotient (Q) analysis and remote sensing data. Quotient curves (QC) were constructed using the geographic distribution of egg density, temperature and salinity from samples collected during nine survey cruises between 1976 and 1993. The interannual sea surface temperature (SST) variability was determined using principal component analysis on the SST anomalies (SSTA) estimated from remote sensing data over the period between 1985 and 2007. The spatial pattern of egg occurrences in the SBB indicated that the largest concentration occurred between Paranaguá and São Sebastião. Spawning habitat expanded and contracted during the years, fluctuating around Paranaguá. In January 1978 and January 1993, eggs were found nearly everywhere along the inner shelf of the SBB, while in January 1988 and 1991 spawning had contracted to their southernmost position. The SSTA maps for the spawning periods showed that in the case of habitat expansion (1993 only) anomalies over the SBB were zero or slightly negative, whereas for the contraction period anomalies were all positive. Sardinella brasiliensis is capable of exploring suitable spawning sites provided by the entrainment of the colder and less‐saline South Atlantic Central Water onto the shelf by means of both coastal wind‐driven (to the north‐east of the SBB) and meander‐induced (to the south‐west of the SBB) upwelling.  相似文献

Lake Baikal, Russian Siberia, was sampled in July 1990 during the period of spring mixing and initiation of thermal stratification. Vertical profiles of temperature, dissolved nutrients (nitrate and soluble reactive phosphorus), phytoplankton biomass, and primary productivity were determined in an eleven-station transect encompassing the entire 636 km length of the lake. Pronounced horizontal variability in hydrodynamic conditions was observed, with the southern region of the lake being strongly thermally stratified while the middle and north basins were largely isothermal through July. The extent of depletion of surface water nutrients, and the magnitude of phytoplankton biomass and productivity, were found to be strongly correlated with the degree of thermal stratification. Horizontal differences likely reflected the contribution of two important factors: variation in the timing of ice-out in different parts of the lake (driving large-scale patterns of thermal stratification and other limnological properties) and localized effects of river inflows that may contribute to the preliminary stabilization of the water column in the face of intense turbulent spring mixing (driving meso-scale patterns). Examination of the relationships between surface water inorganic N and P depletion suggested that during the spring and early summer, phytoplankton growth in unstratified portions of the lake was largely unconstrained by nutrient supplies. As summer progressed, the importance of co-limitation by both N and P became more apparent. Uptake and regeneration rates, measured directly using the stable isotope 15N, revealed that phytoplankton in stratified portions of the lake relied primarily on NH4 as their N source. Rates of NH4 regeneration were in approximate equilibrium with uptake; both processes were dominated by organisms <2 µm. This pattern is similar to that observed for oligotrophic marine systems. Our study underscores the importance of hydrodynamic conditions in influencing patterns of biological productivity and nutrient dynamics that occur in Lake Baikal during its brief growing season.  相似文献

Mesozooplankton abundance, body area spectrum, biomass, gut fluorescence and electron transfer system (ETS) activity were studied in the Antarctic Peninsula during the post-bloom scenario in these waters. Values of abundance and biomass were rather low and decreased sharply from the slope waters to the coastal area. In contrast, specific gut fluorescence and ETS activity were high in the coastal area and decreased through the shelf-break. Large copepods were very scarce, similarly to the post-bloom conditions in phytoplankton where large cells are not abundant and small cells such as flagellates dominate the water column. The vertical distribution showed two well defined layers by day, one at the surface which corresponded to krill organisms and a second at depth (>300 m) formed mainly by the large copepod Metridia gerlachei. During the short night, this layer ascended at the time that krill at the surface migrated to deeper waters as observed from acoustics and net sampling. This observation and the absence of large copepods over the shelf suggest that krill consumption on large phytoplankton cells during the bloom is followed by an increase in predation upon mesozooplankton. It also suggests that krill decrease the abundance and biomass of mesozooplankton over the shelf and continues their predation upon mesopelagic copepods during the post-bloom in Antarctic waters. This behaviour could explain the long ago described impoverishment in mesozooplankton south of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.  相似文献

1. The effects of wind events on phytoplankton dynamics were investigated in two temperate reservoirs. 2. Meteorological forcing, change in physical and chemical structure of the water column and biological responses of phytoplankton communities were followed for 3 weeks in three seasons. 3. Depending on the season, the phytoplankton response differed in response to nutrient and light conditions, and to the intensity of stratification and mixing. 4. We demonstrated that, on a time scale of a few days, wind events can modify phytoplankton dynamics, in terms of size structure and exported biomass. An increase of mixing favoured the largest size class and disadvantaged the smallest size class, while an increase in stratification had the opposite effects. The short‐term change in size structure was reflected in the sedimentary fluxes but with a time lag.  相似文献

Photosynthetic carbon metabolism and the biochemical compositionof late-winter phytoplankton assemblages in the eastern NorthAtlantic Ocean were studied during an oceanographic cruise carriedout in March 1992. Enhanced levels of phytoplankton biomassand primary production were linked to the subtropical front-AzoresCurrent (STF/AC) region. High values of the relative incorporationof carbon into proteins indicated that the phytoplankton wasgrowing at a rate close to the maximum growth rate. A very highpercentage of carbon was incorporated into the lipid fractionat southern latitudes, whereas incorporation into polysaccharidespeaked at the AC. In general, the biochemical composition ofparticulate matter reflected the observed patterns of photosynthatepartitioning. Latitudinal changes in phytoplankton species compositionaccounted for the geographical variability in 14C labellingpatterns. Turnover times of particulate matter estimated forthe STF/AC region were relatively low (3–5 days) and suggestedbalancedgrowth of the microplankton community over daily timescales.  相似文献

1. Wind is considered the dominant factor controlling phytoplankton distribution in lentic environments. In canyon‐shaped reservoirs, wind tends to blow along the main axis generating internal seiches and advective water movements that jointly with biological features of algae can produce a heterogeneous phytoplankton distribution. Turbulence generated by wind stress and convection will also affect the vertical distribution of algae, depending on their sinking properties. 2. We investigated the vertical and horizontal distribution of phytoplankton during the stratification period in Sau Reservoir (NE Spain). Sites along the main reservoir axis were sampled every 4 h for 3 days, and profiles of chlorophyll‐a and temperature were made using a fluorescent FluoroProbe, which can discriminate among the main algal groups. Convective and wind shear velocity scales, and energy dissipation were calculated from meteorological data, and simulation experiments were performed to describe non‐measured processes, like vertical advection and sinking velocity of phytoplankton. 3. Wind direction changed from day to night, producing a diel thermocline oscillation and an internal seiche. Energy dissipation was moderate during the night, and mainly attributed to convective cooling. During the day the energy dissipation was entirely attributed to wind shear, but values indicated low turbulence intensity. 4. The epilimnetic algal community was mainly composed of diatoms and chlorophytes. Chlorophytes showed a homogeneous distribution on the horizontal and vertical planes. Diatom horizontal pattern was also homogeneous, because the horizontal advective velocities generated by wind forcing were not high enough to develop phytoplankton gradients along the reservoir. 5. Diatom vertical distribution was heterogeneous in space and time. Different processes dominated in different regions of the reservoir, due to the interaction between seiching and the daily cycle of convective‐mediated turbulence. As the meteorological forcing followed a clear daily pattern, we found very different diatom sedimentation dynamics between day and night. Remarkably, these dynamics were asynchronous in the extremes of the seiche, implying that under the same meteorological forcing a diatom population can show contrasting sedimentation dynamics at small spatial scales (approximately 103 m). This finding should be taken into account when interpreting paleolimnological records from different locations in a lake. 6. Vertical distribution of non‐motile algae is a complex process including turbulence, vertical and horizontal advection, variations in the depth of the mixing layer and the intrinsic sinking properties of the organisms. Thus, simplistic interpretations considering only one of these factors should be regarded with caution. The results of this work also suggest that diatoms can persist in stratified water because of a synergistic effect between seiching and convective turbulence.  相似文献

Eulerian time-series were completed at three sites on the south eastern shelf of the Sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands (PEI), from 9 to 27 April 2000, to investigate the spatial and temporal variability of mesozooplankton communities in relation to on-shelf hydrodynamics. Surface temperature and phytoplankton biomass were recorded daily at all three sites, while two Bongo net tows and vertical temperature profiles were collected daily at two sites. Contrary to predictions of on-shelf water retention at low ambient current velocities, cross-correlation analysis identified a northward advection of ∼8.23 cm s−1 over the study area. Day to day changes in both physical and biological parameters were associated with cross-shelf advection. However, sea temperature had a narrow range of 6.2–7.4°C, while average between sample Bray–Curtis similarity in zooplankton communities was high, exceeding 75%. The relatively consistent average sample biomass amounted to ∼494 tonnes dry weight of mesozooplankton per day being advected onto the south eastern sector of the PEI shelf. We hypothesise that the observed stability of both physical and biological parameters was due to the Sub-Antarctic Front, with its high volume transport and steep physical gradients, being far to the north of the islands. Spatial and temporal variability of hydrodynamics on the PEI shelf, and particularly its relationship to shifting frontal positions, is highlighted as a future research area necessary to quantify the gross delivery of allochthonous biomass to the PEI ecosystem.  相似文献

Summary Phytoplankton biomass and species composition were studied in transects through the ice edge region of the Greeland Sea from 19 July to 8 August 1984. Biomass was estimated by vertical in situ chlorophyll fluorescence and pigment extraction of discrete samples. Preserved material was used for identification of phytoplankton species and calculation of their relative abundances. The results suggest that the various geographical regions of the Greenland Sea differ considerably in their phytoplankton development. Autotrophic biomass and species composition were closely associated with the extent of the annual and seasonal ice cover, hydrographic conditions, nutrient availability and the water masses typical of the different domains. In the NE Greenland polynya a deep mixed layer inhibited the development of a phytoplankton bloom, whereas greatest biomass concentrations were associated with a receding ice edge on the E Greenland Shelf. In the Fram Strait, the position of the relatively stationary ice edge is controlled by frontal dynamics, currents and wind. Due to rapidly changing physical and chemical conditions, phytoplankton biomass showed great variability between stations. High chlorophyll a concentrations may develop locally where melting ice causes stratification or can result from passive accumulation in eddies. In July/August 84 the Fram Strait area was dominated by a typical summer population of flagellates and large diatom species.Contribution 6 of the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Measurements of oxygen, pH, phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, hydroxylamine. ammonium and sulphide were made in four Ethiopian crater lakes during 1964, 1965 and 1966 at fairly regular intervals. The seasonal pattern of the dynamics of these chemical constituents is described for depth and time and relates closely to the pattern of thermal stratification and mixing previously described.
2. Interactions between the chemical constituents are examined and comparisons are made between the four lakes which differ widely in their depth, exposure to wind and standing crops of phytoplankton.
3. The vertical distribution of the chemical constituents is used to help define the limits of circulation of surface waters and the need to understand the seasonality of chemical stratification in relating climatic, morphometric and biological events, especially in tropical lakes, is stressed.  相似文献

The Northeastern Aegean Sea (NEA) is the area where Black Seawaters (BSW) outflow in the Mediterranean enhancing local productivityand inducing high hydrographic complexity. We describe the structureand distribution (both vertical and horizontal) of mesozooplanktonassemblages in the NEA during the thermal stratification periodin July and September 2003, in an effort to identify BSW effects. The overall standing stocks of mesozooplankton in the NEA weremuch higher than those typically reported for other pelagicwaters of the eastern Mediterranean. Higher abundance and biomassvalues and a distinctive copepod and cladoceran species assemblagewere recorded in the surface layer (directly influenced by theBSW). Variability in the supply and subsequent advection ofBSW in the NEA seemed to be the major factor affecting the structureand distribution of mesozooplankton assemblages. In July, lowersurface salinity reflected the increased supply of BSW (richin organic carbon) and, consequently, the abundance of filterfeeding taxa (cladocerans, appendicularians and doliolids) washigher than in September. During both surveys, the copepod/cladoceranassemblages of the surface (0–50 m) layer were sensitivetracers of horizontal hydrological and biological variability(e.g. location of fronts) associated with the advection of theBSW. 1. The impact of long thermal stratification events on some key properties in a polymictic lake was studied by determining the mixing regime of Müggelsee, Germany, using water temperature profiles taken hourly over 4 years. The period included two exceptional summer heatwaves. 2. Long thermal stratification events lasted from about 1 week to 2 months, and exhibited a high variability in thermocline depth and stratification intensity within and between events. 3. During stratification events, hypolimnetic oxygen concentrations strongly decreased while hypolimnetic SRP accumulation increased, depending on the duration and intensity of stratification and on hypolimnetic water temperature. 4. The impact of stratification on the functional phytoplankton composition increased with increasing stratification duration, but was rather different for the heatwaves. 5. Stratification events were followed by strong nutrient pulses into the euphotic zone and intense phytoplankton growth, particularly after the heatwaves. Hence, the influence of the climate extremes counteracted effects of reduced external nutrient loading.  相似文献

Phytoplankton underpin the marine food web in shelf seas, with some species having properties that are harmful to human health and coastal aquaculture. Pressures such as climate change and anthropogenic nutrient input are hypothesized to influence phytoplankton community composition and distribution. Yet the primary environmental drivers in shelf seas are poorly understood. To begin to address this in North Western European waters, the phytoplankton community composition was assessed in light of measured physical and chemical drivers during the "Ellett Line" cruise of autumn 2001 across the Scottish Continental shelf and into adjacent open Atlantic waters. Spatial variability existed in both phytoplankton and environmental conditions, with clear differences not only between on and off shelf stations but also between different on shelf locations. Temperature/salinity plots demonstrated different water masses existed in the region. In turn, principal component analysis (PCA), of the measured environmental conditions (temperature, salinity, water density and inorganic nutrient concentrations) clearly discriminated between shelf and oceanic stations on the basis of DIN:DSi ratio that was correlated with both salinity and temperature. Discrimination between shelf stations was also related to this ratio, but also the concentration of DIN and DSi. The phytoplankton community was diatom dominated, with multidimensional scaling (MDS) demonstrating spatial variability in its composition. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to investigate the link between environment and the phytoplankton community. This demonstrated a significant relationship between community composition and water mass as indexed by salinity (whole community), and both salinity and DIN:DSi (diatoms alone). Diatoms of the Pseudo-nitzschia seriata group occurred at densities potentially harmful to shellfish aquaculture, with the potential for toxicity being elevated by the likelihood of DSi limitation of growth at most stations and depths.  相似文献

The qualitative and quantitative composition of the phytoplankton assemblages of the Catalano-Balearic Sea (NW Mediterranean) was examined in relationship with frontal boundaries and short-term meteorological forcing originated by an intense wind storm. Data were obtained during February 1990, before and after strong NW winds, from several transects across the Catalan (continental side) and North Balearic (Balearic Islands side) shelf/slope fronts. High chlorophyll concentrations and diatom dominance inshore of the Catalan Front were typical of the winter-spring phytoplankton maximum. However, offshore of the Catalan Front, diatoms were scarce and the phytoplankton assemblage was dominated by coccolithophorids. In spite of weak density stratification, a deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) was well developed, before the storm, offshore and appeared to cause a pulse of new production, as suggested by increased oxygen concentrations in the vicinity of the DCM. The results presented here indicate the existence of a persistent association between the distribution of distinct phytoplankton assemblages and hydrographic characteristics of the studied area. Our results also show that, at least during an important part of the winter-spring bloom period of the Catalano-Balearic Sea, high phytoplankton biomass offshore of the Catalan Front is not associated with the diatom dominance typically found in coastal waters and other offshore areas of the NW Mediterranean. This finding has biogeochemical implications in relationship with vertical export fluxes of particulate matter.   相似文献

The Queen Charlotte Islands, Canada, lie at the northern extremeof the coastal upwelling system of the eastern North PacificOcean (51–54°N). In this study, the first observationsof spatial and inter-annual patterns in nutrient inventories, chlorophyll (Chl) a and phytoplankton assemblages are reportedand related to oceanographic conditions in near-shore watersof the island archipelago. Stronger and more persistent upwellingin 2002 coincided with higher nutrient and Chl a standing stockscompared to 2001 and a higher proportion of diatoms. Dinoflagellateswere more prevalent in 2001, including several potentially harmfulspecies. At sub-seasonal scales, Chl a concentrations were greatestduring downwelling conditions and smallest during upwellingconditions. On the west coast, weak water column stratification, high relative proportions of diatoms and large nutrient inventoriesaccompanied upwelling-favourable conditions, whereas on theeast coast, there was no direct relationship between the BakunUpwelling Index and water column stability. According to redundancyanalysis, variability in species composition was best explainedby sea surface temperature, the depth of the euphotic zone andnutrient inventories. The east coast supported blooms of coccolithophoreswithin protected bays, confirming previous satellite observationsthat showed bright patches in these areas. The data illustratethat moderate upwelling can have an important influence on near-shorealgal standing stocks and species composition at the northernextreme of the upwelling system off the west coast of NorthAmerica, and that topographical complexity may be importantfor the development of phytoplankton blooms.  相似文献

Variability of hydrographic conditions and primary and secondary productivity between cold and warm climatic regimes in the Bering Sea has been the subject of much study in recent years, while interannual variability within a single regime and across multiple trophic levels has been less well-documented. Measurements from an instrumented mooring on the southeastern shelf of the Bering Sea were analyzed for the spring-to-summer transitions within the cold regime years of 2009–2012 to investigate the interannual variability of hydrographic conditions, primary producer biomass, and acoustically-derived secondary producer and consumer abundance and community structure. Hydrographic conditions in 2012 were significantly different than in 2009, 2010, and 2011, driven largely by increased ice extent and thickness, later ice retreat, and earlier stratification of the water column. Primary producer biomass was more tightly coupled to hydrographic conditions in 2012 than in 2009 or 2011, and shallow and mid-column phytoplankton blooms tended to occur independent of one another. There was a high degree of variability in the relationships between different classes of secondary producers and hydrographic conditions, evidence of significant intra-consumer interactions, and trade-offs between different consumer size classes in each year. Phytoplankton blooms stimulated different populations of secondary producers in each year, and summer consumer populations appeared to determine dominant populations in the subsequent spring. Overall, primary producers and secondary producers were more tightly coupled to each other and to hydrographic conditions in the coldest year compared to the warmer years. The highly variable nature of the interactions between the atmospherically-driven hydrographic environment, primary and secondary producers, and within food webs underscores the need to revisit how climatic regimes within the Bering Sea are defined and predicted to function given changing climate scenarios.  相似文献

The phytoplankton [chlorophyll a (Chl a)], microzooplankton, mesozooplankton and macrozooplankton biomass and distributionwere studied as part of a multidisciplinary project (Tempano)along the Antarctic Peninsula during December 2002. Even thoughthe summer phytoplankton bloom was not yet developed in thearea, autotrophs dominated the plankton biomass. Phytoplanktonvertical distribution was, in general, homogeneous in the upper40–50 m of the water column, further decreasing with depth.Protozoans showed low biomass; their contribution to the totalplankton being one order of magnitude lower than that of autotrophs. The vertical distribution of protozoans was variable among stationswith marked peaks at depths ranging from 30 to 80 m. Mesozooplankton-integratedbiomass was generally low, although there was a notable increasesouthward near the ice marginal zone. Macrozooplankton distributionwas more variable without any clear zonal distribution pattern. The vertical distribution of meso- and macrozooplankton (>4mm) biomass showed clear peaks of abundance comprising differentspecies depending on the geographical area. Our biomass distributiondata suggest a food-web scenario in which macrozooplankton arepreying on mesozooplankton populations only in the northernerstations, and mesozooplankton are, in their turn, shaping theabundance of the emerging populations of microzooplankton. Phytoplankton,on the other hand, seem to be hardly controlled by grazing activity.  相似文献
