Some essential oils from several plants (Artemisia verlotorum, Lavandula augustifolia, Ocimum gratissimum) have proved to have acaricidal, antifungal and antibacterial activity. Inula viscosa Ait. (Asteraceae), a plant growing spontaneously in the Mediterranean area, is currently used by popular medicine for its therapeutic effects. Flavonoids, azulenes, sesquiterpenes, and essential oils have been isolated and identified from its leaves. This paper reports the results of the composition and antifungal activity in vitro against dermatophytes and Candida spp. of the four essential oils obtained by steam distillation of the leaves, flowers, whole plant and whole plants without flower extracts of I. viscosa. All the extracts proved to have a significant antifungal activity against dermatophytes even at low concentrations (0.01 mg/ml). The leaf extracts exhibited the greatest antifungal efficacy. The high concentration of the sesquiterpene (carboxyeudesmadiene), occurring in the leaf extracts, may explain its greater antifungal activity.  相似文献

Aqueous extracts of 10 plants were tested for their ability to inhibit Trichophyton rubrum and Microsporum canis, the aetiological agents of dermal fungal infections in humans. These extracts were also evaluated for their activity against some bacteria. Aqueous extracts from the leaves of Inula viscosa produced detectable antifungal activity against these dermatophytes.  相似文献

Antioxidant activity of anti-inflammatory plant extracts   总被引:18,自引:0,他引:18
The antioxidant properties of twenty medical herbs used in the traditional Mediterranean and Chinese medicine were studied. Extracts from Forsythia suspensa, Helichrysum italicum, Scrophularia auriculata, Inula viscosa, Coptis chinensis, Poria cocos and Scutellaria baicalensis had previously shown anti-inflammatory activity in different experimental models. Using free radical-generating systems H. italicum. I. viscosa and F. suspensa protected against enzymatic and non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation in model membranes and also showed scavenging property on the superoxide radical. All extracts were assayed at a concentration of 100 microg/ml. Most of the extracts were weak scavengers of the hydroxyl radical and C. chinensis and P. cocos exhibited the highest scavenging activity. Although S. baicalensis inhibited the lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomes and red blood cells, the extract showed inhibitory actions on aminopyrine N-demethylase and xanthine oxidase activities as well as an pro-oxidant effect observed in the Fe3+-EDTA-H2O2 system. The results of the present work suggest that the anti-inflammatory activities of the same extracts could be explained, at least in part, by their antioxidant properties.  相似文献

The folk medical tradition ascribes to Inula viscosa (a suffrutescent plant of Compositae widely spread along the Mediterranean basin) balsamic, antipyretic, antiphlogistic and antiseptic properties. Pharmacological test on rabbits, made hyperpyretic in laboratory, gave satisfactory antipyretic results. Gas chromatographical separation from a high-boiling fraction of seven azulenes, two of them identified as 1,4-dimethyl-azulene (about 50% and chamazulene (32%), confirmed the antiphlogistic action ascribed to the plant. By the present research (solvent extraction, thin layer chromatography and gas chromatography are described in detail) eucalyptol was identified in a fraction of essential oil obtained from fresh leaves of the plant. This datum supports the balsamic and antiseptic properties of Inula viscosa Ait.  相似文献

Leaves of Inula viscosa have been used in medicine from ancient times. Structures or cells with secreting activity were localized and a spectrum of products was histochemically identified within them. Leaf extracts were investigated with gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Calluses produced from leaf-cell cultures were also subjected to histochemical reagents and tested with GC-MS and TLC to investigate their secreting ability compared with that in leaves. Little-differentiated callus cells are synthetically active and produce, as do its leaf cells, numerous polar compounds that could be of pharmaceutical interest.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 144 , 437–448.  相似文献

Antifungal activity of Apulia region propolis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A study was carried out to assess the in vitro antifungal activity of some natural Apulian propolis extracts of different origin. Their antifungal activity was compared to the antifungal activity of conifers and commercial propolis extracts. All extracts revealed antifungal activity against dermatophytes and Candida species. The antifungal activity differences found depended on the origin of the propolis and the solvent used for extraction. The best antifungal activity was given by the 'Orimini' propolis. The antifungal activity may have been influenced by the presence of different cinnamic and flavonoid components and their different concentration in the extracts. Further investigations are needed to validate this hypothesis.  相似文献

β-1,3-Glucanase activity was detected in extracts of different tissues of healthy mature petunia flowers except the filament. The stigma was studied further as it had the highest enzyme activity and there is a paucity of information on the occurrence of this enzyme in this tissue. Specific activity of the enzyme was found to increase within the stigmatic tissue from early development until just before anthesis. Following non-denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis at pH 8.8, extracts of dehiscent stigma seem to contain three acidic isoforms of β-1,3-glucanase. Crude extracts of stigma was passed through a pachyman affinity column. A fraction of affinity-purified active β-1,3-glucanase enzyme was found to have no antifungal activity against Trichoderma viride, Phloma clematidina and Cladosporium fulvum.  相似文献

Woodfordia fruticosa Kurz is a member of family Lythraceae, commonly used in the treatment of diseases like leucorrhoea, dysentery, leprosy and menorrhagia. The plant material such as leaves, bark and flowers were collected from three different (200, 402 and 600?m) altitudes of Khandala (M.S. India) and the extracts were prepared in solvents like methanol, ethanol and distilled water. The radical scavenging potential and total phenolic content of the extracts were evaluated. The methanol extract of bark collected from the location one (200?m) showed high radical scavenging activity (96.52?±?0.02) than distilled water and ethanol extracts (57.80?±?0.2 and 86.52?±?0.03). The bark of the plant showed highest (663?±?37.85) total phenolic content that of flowers and leaves. The methanol extracts of leaves, bark and flowers showed high tannic acid content, while TBARS assay of ethanol extract of flowers showed maximum protection (27.65). It was observed that there is no significant difference in percent scavenging activity in different plant parts collected from three different altitudes but showed difference in the solvent system used. The results obtained are in support of extensive use of Woodfordia fruticosa in traditional medicine and endorses the use of bark, while it needs further investigations on the plants growing in different geographic areas.  相似文献

Structure of fungal communities is known to be influenced by host plants and environmental conditions. However, in most cases, the dynamics of these variation patterns are poorly understood. In this work, we compared richness, diversity, and composition between assemblages of endophytic and rhizospheric fungi associated to roots of two plants with different lifestyles: the halophyte Inula crithmoides and the non-halophyte I. viscosa (syn. Dittrichia viscosa L.), along a spatially short salinity gradient. Roots and rhizospheric soil from these plants were collected at three points between a salt marsh and a sand dune, and fungi were isolated and characterized by ITS rDNA sequencing. Isolates were classified in a total of 90 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), belonging to 17 fungal orders within Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. Species composition of endophytic and soil communities significantly differed across samples. Endophyte communities of I. crithmoides and I. viscosa were only similar in the intermediate zone between the salt marsh and the dune, and while the latter displayed a single, generalist association of endophytes, I. crithmoides harbored different assemblages along the gradient, adapted to the specific soil conditions. In the lower salt marsh, root assemblages were strongly dominated by a single dark septate sterile fungus, also prevalent in other neighboring salt marshes. Interestingly, although its occurrence was positively correlated to soil salinity, in vitro assays revealed a strong inhibition of its growth by salts. Our results suggest that host lifestyle and soil characteristics have a strong effect on endophytic fungi and that environmental stress may entail tight plant-fungus relationships for adaptation to unfavorable conditions.  相似文献

The ethanolic and aqueous extracts from in vitro shoots of Quillaja saponaria Mol. (Quillay) were studied for their antifungal activity against the phytopathogenic fungus Botrytis cinerea Pers. These extracts reduced conidial germination and mycelial growth of B. cinerea, ethanolic extracts being more active than aqueous extracts. In addition, the damage areas produced by this fungus on tomato leaves and strawberry fruits pre-treated with quillay extracts were diminished. The fungitoxic effect of in vitro-grown quillay extract was similar to those obtained with commercial fungicides of both natural (BC-1000) and synthetic (iprodione–dicarboximide) origin. On the other hand, the antifungal action of quillay extracts obtained from adult trees naturally grown was only slightly superior to the fungitoxic activity of the extract from in vitro plants. HPLC analysis of the extract showed that it contained saponins and some phenolic compounds such as chlorogenic, caffeic, vanillic, and salicylic acids, and scopoletin, which have been identified as antifungal agents on phytopathogenic fungi. The results obtained in this work, suggests that extracts of in vitro-grown quillay have an important protective effect against B. cinerea and support the use of an in vitro culture system as a biotechnological alternative to obtain environmental safe antifungal quillay extracts to control B. cinerea, contributing to the preservation of this indigenous Chilean species.  相似文献

In the present study, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties of 15 lipohylic extracts obtained from different parts (leaf, branch, stem, kernel, shell skins, seeds) of Pistacia vera were screened against both standard and the isolated strains of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and C. parapsilosis by microdilution method. Both Herpes simplex (DNA) and Parainfluenza viruses (RNA) were used for the determination of antiviral activity of the P. vera extracts by using Vero cell line. Ampicilline, ofloxocine, ketoconazole, fluconazole, acyclovir and oseltamivir were used as the control agents. The extracts showed little antibacterial activity between the range of 128-256 microg/ml concentrations whereas they had noticeable antifungal activity at the same concentrations. Kernel and seed extracts showed significant antiviral activity compared to the rest of the extracts as well as the controls.  相似文献

The antimicrobial properties of acetone, methanol, and aqueous extracts of the lichens Lasallia pustulata, Parmelia sulcata, Umbilicaria crustulosa, and Umbilicaria cylindrica were studied comparatively in vitro. Antimicrobial activities of the extracts of different lichens were estimated by the disk diffusion test for Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungal organisms, as well as by determining the MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration). The obtained results showed that the acetone and methanol extracts of Lasallia pustulata, Parmelia sulcata, and Umbilicaria crustulosa manifest antibacterial activity against the majority of species of bacteria tested, in addition to selective antifungal activity. The MIC of lichen extracts was lowest (0.78 mg/ml) for the acetone extract of Lasallia pustulata against Bacillus mycoides. Aqueous extracts of all of the tested lichens were inactive. Extracts of the lichen Umbilicaria cylindrica manifested the weakest activity, inhibiting only three of the tested organisms.  相似文献

Trichophyton species susceptibility to green and red propolis from Brazil   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Aims:  The in vitro antifungal activity of Brazilian green and red propolis was tested against different species of Trichophyton .
Methods and Results:  The antifungal activity of the Brazilian aqueous and alcoholic extracts of the green propolis and the alcoholic extract of red propolis was observed against Trichophyton rubrum , Trichophyton tonsurans and Trichophyton mentagrohytes samples, using as controls itraconazole and terbinafine. The minimal inhibitory concentration was determined following the microdilution method indicated by the 'Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute'. The minimal fungicide concentration was determined by the absence of growth in liquid sabouraud culture medium. The data obtained showed that the green propolis alcoholic extract's antifungal activity was from 64 to 1024 μg ml−1, whereas the red propolis alcoholic extract was from 8 to 1024 μg ml−1.
Conclusions:  The antifungal activity of the red propolis alcoholic extract was more efficient than the green propolis alcoholic extract for all three species studied. The T. rubrum samples were shown to be more sensitive to the antifungal activity of the alcoholic extracts of the propolis.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  The antifungal potential of the alcoholic extracts of green and red propolis demonstrated suggest an applicable potential as an alternative treatment for dermatophytosis caused by these species.  相似文献

The present study was designated to evaluate the antifungal activity and to root out the antifungal plant leaf extracts from this Indian folk-flore. The in vitro antifungal assay was performed by agar diffusion test and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol and distilled water plant leaf extracts. Extraction of 17 different plant leaves was carried out in different solvents such as hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol and distilled water. Among them extractive yield of methanol was maximum than the rest of the three solvents. These extracts were screened for their antifungal activity against nine different fungi. Among these ethyl acetate extracts of Adhatoda vasica, Ocimum sanctum and Holoptelea integrifolia exhibited maximum antifungal activity against Alternaria sp., Aspergillus parasi, Aspergillus nidulans, Trichoderma harzianum and Aspergillus flavus with MIC of 80, 40 and 20 ppm against Aspergillus nidulans and Alternaria sp. Ethyl acetate extracts showed promising antifungal activity against Adhatoda vasica, Ocimum sanctum and Holoptelea integrifolia against Aspergillus nidulans, and Alternaria sp. might be applicable as fungicide against fungal plants disease.  相似文献

The antifungal activity of the different stages of Anagallis arvensis L. was compared, and similar results were obtained by all the methods of testing. Different dilutions of extracts of each of the plant-growth stages were tested for their effect on the germination of spores of Helminthosporium turcicum Pass. In Anagallis arvensis, the antifungal principle gradually increases in concentration from ‘seedling stage’ to the ‘flowering-initiation stage,’ then decreases with advanced age. The growth stages in the declining order of their fungitoxicity were ‘flowering-initiated,’ ‘full bloom with a few green fruits,’ ‘mature plants,’ ‘pre-flowering,’ and ‘seedling stage.’  相似文献

The diversity and antimicrobial activity of endophytic fungi associated with the Brazilian medicinal plant Solanum cernuum Vell. were studied during summer and winter seasons. A total of 246 fungal isolates were obtained, including 225 filamentous fungi and 21 yeasts. They were identified by morphological, physiological, and molecular methods. Fifty-five different taxa represented by the phyla Ascomycota (33 taxa), Basidiomycota (21 taxa), and Zygomycota (one taxon) were identified. The most abundant taxa were closely related to Arthrobotrys foliicola , Colletotrichum gloeosporioides , Coprinellus radians , Glomerella acutata , Diatrypella frostii , Phoma glomerata , Mucor sp., Phlebia subserialis , Phoma moricola , Phanerochaete sordida , and Colletotrichum sp. A total of 265 fungal extracts were screened and 64 (26.01%) displayed antimicrobial activities. Among these extracts, 18 (28.12%) presented antibacterial and antifungal activities, 42 (65.62%) displayed selective antibacterial activity, and four (6.25%) exhibited only antifungal activity. The best values of minimum inhibitory concentration were obtained from extracts of Cryptococcus rajasthanensis , Glomerella acutata, Leptosphaeria sp., and Phoma glomerata ranging from 7.8 to 15.62?μg/mL. This study is the first survey of the endophytic fungi community associated with S. cernuum, and our results show that they can represent a promising source of bioactive compounds.  相似文献

Abstract

Aqueous extracts of 46 plants belonging to 32 different families of the plant kingdom were screened for antifungal activity against eight important species of Fusarium viz., Fusarium equiseti, F. moniliforme, F. semitectum, F. graminearum, F. oxysporum, F. proliferatum, F. solani and F. lateritium. The test fungi were isolated from maize, paddy and sorghum seeds collected from Mysore district, Mysore, India. Among the several plants screened only 12 plants have recorded significant antifungal activity. The antifungal activity of aqueous extracts varied among the test pathogens and was compared with that of the synthetic fungicides Blitox, Captan, Dithane M-45 and Thiram. F. proliferatum, which showed high susceptibility for the aqueous extracts, was tested using different solvent extracts viz., petroleum ether, benzene, chloroform, methanol and ethanol extracts of all the 12 plants. The results revealed that these plants could be exploited for ecofriendly management of the diseases caused by the test fungal pathogens and seed biodeterioration during storage.  相似文献
