New species of Cucumis (Cucurbitaceae) from northeast tropical Africa

The new species Cucumis hastatus (widespread in southern Somalia, in deciduous bushlands), C. pubituberculatus (central Somalia, on open coastal dunes), C. Jeffrey-anus (southwestern Somalia and eastern Ethiopia, on alluvial soils), and C. baladensis (south-central Somalia, on fixed dunes), are described and illustrated. C. figarei is shown to be illegitimate, the correct name for the species apparently being C. pustulatus.     

A new species of Isoglossa (Acanthaceae) from NE tropical Africa

The first species of Isoglossa known from Somalia, I. congesta is described om material from central Somalia and SE Ethiopia. It is related to I. parvifolia Rendle, occurring in E Ethiopia, but differs in the contracted inflorescences and long calyx lobes with long glandular hairs.     

A new species of Kalanchoe (Crassulaceae) from northeast tropical Africa

The new species Kalanchoe subrosulata from deciduous bushlands in southwestern Somalia and northeastern Kenya is described and illustrated.     

A new species of Zehneria (Cucurbitaceae) from Somalia

The new species Zehneria somalensis , from shady limestone rocks in north-eastem Somalia, is described and illustrated.     

Four new species of Chlorophytum (Anthericaceae) from tropical Africa

Four new species of Chlorophyrum from tropical Africa are described: C. graniticola from Zimbabwe, C. minor and C. perfoliatum from Zambia, and C. velutirzum from Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zaire.     

Four new species of Commicarpus (Nyctaginaceae) from NE tropical Africa

The new species Commicarpus hiranensis from the inland of central Somalia, C. mistus from Somalia, SE Ethiopia, NE Kenya and S Arabia, C. parviflorus from the coastal and subcoastal parts of central Somalia, and C. ramosissimus from NE Somalia are described and illustrated.     

Three new species of Melhania (Sterculiaceae) from north-eastern tropical Africa

Melhania annua , sp. nov., from coastal or subcoastal dunes in Somalia and Kenya, M. hiranensis , sp. nov., from Acacia-Commiphora bushland on sand in south-central Somalia, and M. quercifolia , sp. nov., from coastal dunes in Somalia, are described and illustrated.     

A new species of Sicyos (Cucurbitaceae) from Chiapas,Mexico

Sicyos motozintlensis is described from the vicinity of Motozintla de Mendoza, Chiapas. It shows a strong similarity toS. chiriquensis Hammel & D’Arcy from Panama.     

Three new species of Elassoneuria (Ephemeroptera: Oligoneuriidae) from tropical Africa

Three new species of Elassoneuria are described, E.disneyi from the Cameroons, and E.grandis and E.kidahi from Tanzania. The taxonomy of the nymphs is discussed, and E.congolana Navas is redescribed.     

Three new species of Justicia sect. Justicia (Acanthaceae) from tropical Africa

Three new species of Justicia sect. Justicia (Acanthaceae) are described: Justicia regis from Kenya, Justicia acutifolia from Tanzania, and Justicia telloensis from Cameroun.     

A new species of Sicyos L. (Cucurbitaceae) from Oaxaca, Mexico

Sicyos mcvaughii, a new species from Oaxaca, is described and illustrated. It is similar to Sicyos sertuliferus Cogn., and grows in secondary tropical deciduous forest, between 20 and 630 meters.     

New species of Kyllinga (Cyperaceae) from tropical Africa

Four new species of Kyllinga from tropical Africa are described; K. robinsoniana from Zambia; K. pseudobulbosa from Tanzania; K. tisserantoides from Nigeria and K. uniflora from Tanzania. From the available records it seems that K. tisserantioides is West African in distribution while K. pseudobulbosa and K. robinsoniana have wider area of distribution within Africa. K. uniflora seems to be limited to the East African Miombo vegetation.     

Two new species in Justicia sect. Harnieria (Acanthaceae) from tropical Africa

Two new species of Justicia sect. Harnieria (Acanthaceae) are described: J. afromontana from Sudan and Uganda, and J. huambensis from Angola.     

Four new species of Cayaponia (Cucurbitaceae) from Brazil and Bolivia

Four new species ofCayaponia are described and illustrated: three from Brazil (C. cogniauxiana, C. nitida andC. rugosa) and one from Brazil and Bolivia (C. ferruginea).     

A new synthetic species of Cucumis (Cucurbitaceae) from interspecific hybridization and chromosome doubling

A new synthetic species,Cucumis hytivus J.-F. Chen & J. H. Kirkbr. (2n=38), obtained by doubling the number of chromosomes in the sterile interspecific F₁ hybrid (2n=19) betweenC. sativus L. (2n=14) andC. hystrix Chakr. (2n=24), is described.     

Cucumis canoxyi (Cucurbitaceae) — a new species from Yemen

The new species Cucumis canoxyi , growing on limestone rocks in the Hadramaut Region of southern Yemen, is described and illustrated. The species is the second known member of Cucumis to be without tendrils.     

A new species of Raphionacme (Periplocaceae) from north-east Africa

VENTER, H.J. T. & GILBERT, M. C, 1989. A new species of Raphionacme (Periplocaceae) from north-east Africa. A new species of Raphionacme from north-cast Africa is described. It is recognized by the puberulous lanceolate and wavy leaves, the purple corolla lobes, (he simple free filiform corona lobes, the massive laterally broadened stamina! filaments and the position of the gynoslcgium in the corolla mouth. The new species resembles R. michelii de Wild, to a certain extent. Their coronas and stamens are alike in structure and implantation. However, they differ with regard to the corolla structure and the relative position of the gynostegium in the flower, and the length of the pedicels.     

A new species of Endeis (Pycnogonida) from West Africa

A new species of pycnogonid, Endeis picta sp. nov. , is described from the coast of Ghana, occuring in a Balanus tintinnabulum fouling community on a ship's hull. The species is close to E. straughani Clark.     

A new species of Sicyos (Cucurbitaceae, Sicyeae, Sicyinae) from Mexico and Guatemala

Sicyos lirae is described as a new species from Chiapas, Mexico, and Guatemala. It grows in zones with primary or secondary montane rain forest at elevations between 1400 and 3800 meters. In Guatemala the species is commonly called “güisquil de ratón.” It is similar toSicyos galeottii Cogn., from which it differs in blade consistency, shape of the stigma lobes, and several important ovary and fruit characters.     

Two new species and a new combination in Frantzia (Cucurbitaceae)

The monotypic genusPolakowskia is reduced to a section ofFrantzia. Two new species from Costa Rica,F. villosa andF. talamancensis, are described. The new nomenclatural combination,F. tacaco (Pittier) Wunderlin, is proposed.
