Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of eradicating the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, in the hot, humid and rainy conditions of northern Taiwan. Thirteen hectares of the Shihmen Reservoir have been infected with these ants, with a total of 1 578 mounds. Pyriproxyfen was applied at a rate of 2 kg/hectare each season, for a total of four seasons. Surveys using visual examination, bait traps, as well as the population index method showed that the brood, the reproductive ants, and the worker ants within the nests were all significantly reduced 1 month after the first application of pyriproxyfen. Four months after the initial application there were no more brood or reproductive ants. After 8 months there were no longer any active mounds left, and 12 months later there were no more worker ants. After monitoring for 1 more year, it was ascertained that the red imported fire ants were eradicated. The percentages of decrease after 2, 4 and 6 months of treatment were 57.4%, 80.5%, and 98.2%, respectively.  相似文献

Eleven compounds from indigenous cinnamon (Cinnamomum osmophloeum) leaf essential oil were identified by GC-MS and the dominant constituent was trans-cinnamaldehyde (79.85%). The toxicity of leaf essential oil and trans-cinnamaldehyde were then determined to study their effectiveness in controlling the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren. The results of the toxicity tests indicated that both the indigenous cinnamon leaf essential oil and trans-cinnamaldehyde had an excellent inhibitory effect in controlling the red imported fire ant. The LT(50) values for both 2% leaf essential oil and 2% trans-cinnamaldehyde after open exposure were 105.0min and 32.2min; after close exposure were 18.5min and 21.2min, respectively.  相似文献

红火蚁Solenopsis invicta Buren是一种危险性入侵害虫,可对人类健康、农林业生产、公共安全和生态系统产生严重的负面影响。目前,化学农药是防治红火蚁的主要方法。然而,大多数化学农药并不适用于有机农场、水产养殖区等生态敏感区。为筛选出用于生态敏感区红火蚁防治的药剂,本文结合室内和田间试验评估了植物源杀虫剂苦参碱Matrine、鱼藤酮Rotenone和除虫菊素Pyrethrin对红火蚁的防治效果。室内试验结果表明,苦参碱、鱼藤酮和除虫菊素对红火蚁均具有较高的毒性。田间试验表明,25.00 mg/L和12.50 mg/L苦参碱、250.00 mg/L 和125 mg/L鱼藤酮、75.00 mg/L和37.50 mg/L除虫菊素灌巢处理,红火蚁蚁巢减退率分别达到100%、81.25%、87.50%、79.17%、71.73%和66.67%。然而,除25.00 mg/L苦参碱外,其他处理均导致在被灌巢的蚁巢周围短期内出现新蚁巢。灌巢处理后,处理区的蚂蚁多样性指数和均匀度指数升高,优势度指数下降。综上所述,苦参碱、鱼藤酮和除虫菊素适合灌巢处理防治红火蚁,其中0.5%苦参碱可溶性液剂能有效降低红火蚁种群数量,使得蚁巢减退率达100%,同时对本地蚂蚁群落没有负面影响,因此该商品制剂在红火蚁防治方面具有较好的开发潜力。  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of the permethrin-impregnated plastic on ant mortality and foraging rates, and tested its potential for preventing ants from colonizing potted soil. Direct exposure to the plastic for as short as 1 min caused significant mortality of both red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren, and Argentine ants, Linepithema humile (Mayr); however, red imported fire ants were more susceptible than Argentine ants. Knockdown of virtually all ants initially occurred within 15 min after exposure. However, some moribund ants recovered from the effects within 24 h. For example, after 1 min of direct exposure to the permethrin-impregnated plastic, 70% of Argentine ants and 5% of red imported fire ants recovered from the treatment. In established colonies of Argentine ants, significantly fewer ants foraged for food up posts treated with the plastic compared with untreated posts. In addition, colonies responded to introduction of the treatment by significantly reducing their overall foraging rates, even on untreated posts. When pots filled with moistened soil were introduced into established ant colonies, 82% of Argentine ants and 99% of red imported fire ants moved into the soil. In contrast, when a 1-cm-wide coil of the plastic was placed under the pot, no ants moved into the soil. The potential for use of these materials in nursery production is discussed.  相似文献

Pathogenicity of infective juveniles of selected Steinernema spp. and Heterorhabditis spp. toward developing and reproductive stages of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, was tested under laboratory conditions. At 10(3)-10(5) infective juveniles per Petri dish, mortality of reproductive larvae, pupae, and alates ranged from 28 to 100% at higher doses after 96 h at 23-25 degrees C. Steinernema carpocapsae All was the most consistent species tested; this nematode caused mortality of fire ant larvae, pupae, and alates of 82-94, 64-96, and 38-99%, respectively. Although not susceptible to nematode infection, worker ants vigorously preened nematodes from brood, alates, and themselves. In a field study, S. carpocapsae (5 x 10(6) and 2 x 10(6) drench, 2 x 10(6) infective juvenile infection) was applied to active fire ant mounds in 3.8-liter suspensions. Hydramethylnon (75 ml), a water drench, a water injection, and untreated fire ant mounds were marked and treated. Overall activity in mounds treated with nematodes of hydramethylnon ranged from 40 to 48%. Satellite mound activity accounted for 32-44% of overall activity in mounds treated with nematodes 2 wk after treatment. However, 6 wk after treatment, activity in mounds treated with hydramethylnon was 44%; activity of mounds treated with nematodes ranged from 52 to 80%. Satellite mound activity accounted for 0-24% of overall activity. Whereas a soil drench of S. carpocapsae showed potential as a control method for the red imported fire ant, colony relocation after nematode treatment could limit overall efficacy unless application techniques are developed to overcome or take advantage of the movement.  相似文献

The standard fenoxycarb fire ant bait formulation (Logic), composed of pregel defatted corn grits and soybean oil toxicant, was modified by eliminating the soybean oil. This formulation without soybean oil contained greater than 2 times more fenoxycarb and was as effective as the standard bait formulation against laboratory colonies of red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren. In field tests, the modified and standard baits were equally effective in controlling fire ants after 6, 12, and 18 wk. Individual worker ants obtained from plots treated with fenoxycarb baits without soybean oil had greater than 47 times less fenoxycarb than did workers from the plots treated with the standard fenoxycarb baits containing soybean oil.  相似文献

A potentially important and understudied biological control agent in US agroecosystems is the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren. Red imported fire ants may be particularly important biological control agents because we can manipulate their abundance with changes in habitat complexity. The effect of habitat complexity on biological control by fire ants was determined using plots of collards intercropped with white clover (complex habitat) and simple collard monocrops. The most economically significant pests of collards are larvae of the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.). Predation of DBM larvae by fire ants was more rapid and efficient in the intercrop than the monocrop. Red imported fire ants were 23% less abundant in the intercrop than the monocrop, however, suggesting that fire ants had a greater per capita effect on DBM survival in the complex habitat. Red imported fire ant predation of DBM larvae was significantly affected by larval density. Red imported fire ants also reduced the survival of leaf beetles, another economically significant pest taxa, by 45%. Furthermore, collard leaf damage tended to be inversely related to fire ant density and fire ants were more effective at reducing crop damage in the complex intercrop. Our study indicates the ability of red imported fire ants to be effective biological control agents and suggests that increasing habitat complexity can enhance red imported fire ant efficacy and herbivore control.  相似文献

In this investigation, detection dogs are trained and used in identifying red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren, and their nests. The methodology could assist in reducing the frequency and scope of chemical treatments for red imported fire ant management and thus reduce labor costs and chemical use as well as improve control and quarantine efficiency. Three dogs previously trained for customs quarantine were retrained to detect the scents of red imported fire ants. After passing tests involving different numbers of live red imported fire ants and three other ant species--Crematogaster rogenhoferi Mayr, Paratrechina longicornis Latreille, and Pheidole megacephala F.--placed in containers, ajoint field survey for red imported fire ant nests by detection dogs and bait traps was conducted to demonstrate their use as a supplement to conventional detection methods. The most significant findings in this report are (1) with 10 or more red imported fire ants in scent containers, the dogs had >98% chance in tracing the red imported fire ant. Upon the introduction of other ant species, the dogs still achieved on average, a 93% correct red imported fire ant indication rate. Moreover, the dogs demonstrated great competence in pinpointing emerging and smaller red imported fire ant nests in red imported fire ant-infested areas that had been previously confirmed by bait trap stations. (2) Along with the bait trap method, we also discovered that approximately 90% of red imported fire ants foraged within a distance of 14 m away from their nests. The results prove detection dogs to be most effective for red imported fire ant control in areas that have been previously treated with pesticides and therefore containing a low density of remaining red imported fire ant nests. Furthermore, as a complement to other red imported fire ant monitoring methods, this strategy will significantly increase the efficacy of red imported fire ant control in cases of individual mount treatment.  相似文献

为了阐明红火蚁Solenopsis invicta Buren的发生危害规律,为制定红火蚁的监测与防治措施提供科学依据,本研究调查了广州地区(113°45′E,22°43′N)红火蚁工蚁巢外活动日节律和季节性变化,以及有翅蚁的婚飞活动。结果表明,工蚁巢外活动日节律随季节或月份的不同而存在着明显差异:其中12-2月份的日活动节律为单峰型,即在中午温度较高时数量较大,而在5-10月份的日活动节律为双峰型,即在上午或下午工蚁数量较大,其余月份的活动为不明显的双峰型。工蚁巢外活动数量和时间随季节的不同而有显著差异。其中以6月和10月份的日活动数量最多,而在1月和2月份的活动数量最少,时间最短,其余月份活动数量居中。工蚁在阵雨前后的活动数量明显多于晴天,但处于降雨时刻的巢外工蚁数量极少。蚁巢受侵扰后出巢工蚁数量在30 s内最大,之后便随时间的延长而逐渐减少,该种现象可以用房室函数进行描述。另外,工蚁的巢外数量会随侵扰强度的加大而增加。在试验区内全年都可见到红火蚁婚飞,但婚飞活动主要集中在3-5月份,每日婚飞活动主要发生在下午,并主要发生在雨前或雨后。上述结果对于了解我国红火蚁的发生危害规律和提升其监控技术水平有较大参考价值。  相似文献

Our study focused on colony dynamics of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), in relation to the standard practice of planting rye grass (i.e., plowing) in the fall in Louisiana. Microsatellite molecular markers were used to determine genotypes of individuals from red imported fire ant colonies. These markers allowed us to monitor treatment effect by detecting changes in number and location of colonies in response to disking of pasture plots. Previous research on mound disturbance as a form of cultural control in pastures has produced mixed results. We found that the majority of colonies persisted on plots after plowing. Mound density and mound area, 5 mo after plowing, were not significantly different among treatments. In contrast, April measurements of mound volume were significantly smaller on plowed plots compared with control plots. A closer look at the rebuilding of mounds on plowed plots, during the 5 mo, showed that mound heights stayed below pretreatment measurements and they were significantly smaller than those of undisturbed mounds. Whether plowing has potential for use as a cultural control technique in reducing the impact of red imported fire ant mounds on agricultural practices in pastures remains to be seen. Conceivably, the best application of this technique will be in combination with other control measures in an integrated pest management approach to control red imported fire ants in pastures.  相似文献

【目的】发现-支配权衡(discovery-dominance trade off)在物种间的竞争起着重要作用。本研究旨在了解不同强度的红火蚁Solenopsis invicta入侵对本地蚂蚁群落物种的发现-支配权衡的影响,从而探讨红火蚁与本地蚂蚁的竞争机制。【方法】于2017年10-11月,在云南省楚雄州牟定县的一滇橄榄种植基地利用诱饵法和陷阱法结合的方式引诱和收集蚂蚁,观察并记录常见蚂蚁种类的发现能力、招募能力、支配能力、最早发现诱饵的时间段及个体数。【结果】红火蚁的入侵显著影响了本地蚂蚁群落物种的发现-支配权衡。强入侵区(5.6个活动蚁巢/100 m2)蚂蚁群落中物种的相对发现能力和相对支配能力不存在相关性;弱入侵区(0.14个活动蚁巢/100 m2)蚂蚁群落中两者存在较弱的负相关性,但不显著;对照区(无蚁巢)中两者存在显著负相关性(强入侵区:r=-0.01,P=0.97;弱入侵区:r=-0.60,P=0.21;对照区:r=-0.81,P=0.04)。强入侵区的红火蚁种群普遍在5 min之内就能发现诱饵,而弱入侵区的种群需要10~60 ...  相似文献

The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta (Buren), is a major pest in the United States because of its painful sting. Toxic bait has been an important management tool against fire ants, but site registrations prohibit applications of most baits on grazed pastures. Extinguish, containing the insect growth regulator methoprene, was selected for this study because it has a broad site registration that includes grazed pastures. The primary objective of this research was to evaluate the efficacy for control of red imported fire ants by using broadcast applications of methoprene bait at a label rate of 1,121 g/ha versus applications around the perimeter of a target area at the reduced rate of 280 g/ha. Grazed pastures in Lee County, Alabama, and Chambers County, Alabama, were selected for this study, with broadcast treatments, perimeter treatments, and controls replicated three times at each site. All mounds were counted and rated using the USDA population index before applications and then at 8 and 16 wk posttreatment. Perimeter applications did not significantly reduce S. invicta mound abundance, but bait treatments significantly reduced mound abundance at 16 wk posttreatment at site 1 where applications were conducted in early evening. However, broadcast applications were not effective at site 2 where treatments were conducted in early morning with warmer temperatures. Emergence of winged alates was observed at 12 wk posttreatment, followed by a high density of incipient mounds that may have masked the full treatment effect of methoprene applications at site 2. Methoprene bait was effective in reducing abundance of S. invicta only when full label rates were applied.  相似文献

Two cytochrome P450 genes, CYP4AB1 and CYP4AB2, and the Gp-9 gene were identified as being specifically overexpressed in workers of the red imported fire ant using PCR-selected subtractive hybridization and cDNA array techniques. Full-length CYP4AB1 and CYP4AB2 were cloned and sequenced. The cDNA sequences of CYP4AB1 and CYP4AB2 have open reading frames of 1389 and 1533 nucleotides encoding proteins of 463 and 511 amino acid residues, respectively. Northern blot analysis was performed to compare expression levels of CYP4AB1, CYP4AB2, and Gp-9 for different developmental stages and castes of fire ants. We demonstrate that the expression of these three genes is developmentally and caste specifically regulated in red imported fire ants. Levels of CYP4AB1 mRNA were undetectable in 3rd+4th instars, worker pupae, and alate (mixed sex) pupae; readily detectable in male and female alates; increased (approximately 3-fold) in the queens; and rose to a maximum (13-fold) in workers. Similarly, the expression of CYP4AB2 mRNA was undetectable in 3rd+4th instars, worker pupae, and alate pupae; low in male and female alates and queens; and increased (approximately 7-fold) in workers. Levels of Gp-9 mRNA were readily detectable in male alates; increased (approximately 3-fold) in female alates; and reached a maximum (approximately 12-fold) in workers. Their caste-specific overexpression suggests the functional importance of CYP4AB1, CYP4AB2, and Gp-9 in workers of the red imported fire ant.  相似文献

Several phorid fly species were introduced to the southern United States for biological control of the invasive imported fire ants, Solenopsis richteri (Black), Solenopsis invicta (Red), and their Hybrid S. richteri×S. invicta (Hybrid). It has been previously reported that the Jaguariuna biotype of Pseudacteon tricuspis and the Formosan biotype of Pseudacteon curvatus could distinguish among the three fire ant species with greater preference for Hybrid and Red fire ants. We hypothesized that phorid flies might use host derived chemical cues to differentiate ant species. To determine possible differential olfactory sensitivity of phorid fly species to different fire ant species, we compared electroantennogram (EAG) and behavioral responses of both sexes of P. tricuspis and P. curvatus to body extracts of Black, Red and Hybrid fire ants. As worker sizes of Black and Hybrid fire ants used in this study were much larger than that of Red fire ant (the average weight for Black, Red and Hybrid workers was 1.707, 0.863, 1.223mg per ants, respectively), at doses of 0.01, 0.1, 1 worker equivalent, body extracts of Black and Hybrid fire ant elicited significantly greater EAG response in both sexes of P. tricuspis than that of Red fire ant. Similarly, the EAG response in female P. curvatus to body extract of Black fire ant was significantly greater than to body extract of Red fire ant. To eliminate worker size influence on EAG response in phorid flies, we conducted a second EAG study using a dose of 1mg ant equivalent (body extract from 1mg of worker). No difference in EAG responses was recorded to body extract obtained from the same amount of workers among the three fire ant species (we consider viable Hybrid fire ant as a species in this paper), suggesting that worker size differences contributed to difference in EAG response in the first EAG study. In both EAG studies, male P. tricuspis showed significantly greater EAG responses than male P. curvatus to all three fire ant species. In four-way olfactometer bioassay, worker body extracts of all three fire ant species were equally attractive to P. tricuspis and P. curvatus (i.e. both phorid fly species did not show any preferences among the three fire ant species). Together, the results of the EAG and behavior studies suggest that parasitic phorid flies utilize host derived non-polar compounds from worker ants extracted out by hexane for host location but not for host preference, since both fly species are not able to distinguish among the body extracts of the three fire ant species. Future study will investigate possible involvement of polar compounds and/or non-chemical cues in mediating host preference by phorid flies.  相似文献

[背景]红火蚁是一种危险性入侵生物,虫生真菌对其防治效果会受到外界环境因子的影响。[方法]应用致病力测定的方法研究了不同剂量金龟子绿僵菌M09对红火蚁的毒力,同时研究了含水量和土壤类型对绿僵菌毒力的影响。[结果]红火蚁的死亡率与金龟子绿僵菌的剂量呈正相关,处理4d后LG50为0.37g。金龟子绿僵菌在砂土、壤土和粘土中对红火蚁的致死率均与对照差异显著,其中在砂土中的毒力最强。此外,在不同含水量的土壤中,金龟子绿僵菌的致死率也不相同(P〈0.01)。[结论与意义]土壤类型和土壤湿度会显著影响金龟子绿僵菌M09对红火蚁的防治效果。选择高湿和砂土类型的土壤施用金龟子绿僵菌M09可以达到较好的效果。  相似文献

Invasive ants threaten native communities, in part, through their potential to disrupt mutualisms, yet invasive species may also facilitate native species. The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) is one of the most conspicuous invasive ants in North America and its high densities, combined with its potential to displace native ants, have led to concerns that it may disrupt ant-plant seed dispersal mutualisms. We examined the potential of fire ants to disperse seeds in the longleaf pine ecosystem by comparing the removal of elaiosome-bearing seeds by fire ants versus native ants. A total of 14 ant species were observed removing seeds, with fire ants responsible for more than half of all removals. While fire ants were the dominant seed remover in this system, they did not remove significantly more seeds than would be expected based on their population density (46% of ground-dwelling ants). Moreover, red imported fire ants were similar to native ants with respect to distance of seed movement and frequency of moving seeds back to the nest. Areas of higher fire ant densities were found to have greater rates of seed removal by ants without a subsequent drop in seed dispersal by native ants, suggesting that fire ant-invaded areas may experience overall higher levels of seed dispersal. Thus, fire ants may actually facilitate dispersal of elaiosome-bearing plant species in the longleaf pine ecosystem.  相似文献

本文研究呋虫胺对红火蚁Solenopsis invicta Buren中型工蚁的毒杀活性及爬杆能力、抓附能力、行走能力、攻击能力等行为影响。以水试管喂毒法对红火蚁进行试验。结果表明,1 mg/L和5 mg/L呋虫胺处理13 h后,红火蚁中型工蚁校正死亡率分别为55.56%、97.78%,0 mg/L、1 mg/L和5 mg/L呋虫胺处理9 h后,红火蚁中型工蚁爬杆率分别为100.00%、45.56%和7.78%,抓附率分别为100.00%、33.33%和15.56%,行走率为100.00%、42.22%和25.56%,攻击率为100.00%、36.67%和0.00%。呋虫胺对红火蚁中型工蚁具有良好毒杀活性和行为影响,在红火蚁防控上具有良好应用前景。  相似文献

[背景]红火蚁与棉花粉蚧入侵到同一地区,因侵入生境重叠而相遇,进而产生互惠关系。这种互惠关系对红火蚁、棉花粉蚧的生存、扩散传播、入侵的意义和作用规律、机制等是需要解释的生态学问题。[方法]采用田问试验生态学的方法,通过迁移红火蚁蚁巢、向扶桑上接粉蚧等观察研究了红火蚁入侵对棉花粉蚧近距离扩散的影响。[结果]随着离蚁巢距离的增大,扶桑上工蚁数量逐渐减少,距离为1.0、2.0m时数量较多;发生该蚁区域距蚁巢2.0、3.0m扶桑感染粉蚧比率(75%、45%)显著高于无红火蚁区(25%、10%),其感染比率与工蚁数量呈显著正相关,符合方程Y=0.0042X+0.1992。[结论与意义]红火蚁入侵促进了棉花粉蚧的近距离扩散,扩散范围在2—3m。研究结果可为深入了解红火蚁与棉花粉蚧协同入侵规律等提供支持。  相似文献
