The risk (including bioavailability and eco-toxicity) of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr and Ni) in liquefaction residues (LR) of sewage sludge (SS) was estimated, according to both the speciation of heavy metals and the local environmental characteristics. The amount of organic matters in LR was lower than that in SS, resulting in a smaller calorific value, while the total content of heavy metals in LR nearly doubled. High residual rates of heavy metals (about 80%) indicated that the heavy metals in SS were concentrated into LR after liquefaction. The comparisons of sequential extraction results between SS and LR showed that after liquefaction, the mobile and easily available heavy metal fractions (acid soluble/exchangeable and reducible fractions) were mainly transformed into the relatively stable heavy metal fractions (oxidizable and residual fractions). The bioavailability and eco-toxicity of heavy metals in LR were relieved, though the total concentrations of heavy metals increased.  相似文献

Liquefaction residues (LR) are the main by-products of sewage sludge (SS) liquefaction. This study quantitatively evaluates the potential ecological risk and pollution degrees of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr and Ni) in LR versus SS. The leaching rates (R1) of heavy metals in LR were much lower than those in SS, revealing that the mobility/leachability of heavy metals was well suppressed after liquefaction. Geo-accumulation index (Igeo) indicated that the liquefaction process significantly weakened the contamination degrees of heavy metals. Potential ecological risk index (RI) demonstrated that overall risks caused by heavy metals were obviously lowered from 1093.56 (very high risk) in SS to 4.72 and 1.51 (low risk) in LR1 and LR2, respectively. According to the risk assessment code (RAC), each tested heavy metal had no or low risk to the environments after liquefaction. In a word, the pollution hazards of heavy metals in LR were markedly mitigated.  相似文献

Abstract

Electrometric studies were carried out on the interaction of heavy metal ions such as manganese, chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium and lead with the extracted organic matter, humic and fulvic acid from the sludge in a sewage oxidation pond. The distribution of heavy metals was between 60 and 97%, which is associated with the solid waste (sludge) of the oxidation pond. The adsorption/removal efficiency of metal ions onto the sludge ash was more than 90% and 97%, respectively, in the pure system. To obtain the ash, the sludge was burnt at 500°C, treated with nitric acid (1+1) to leach out all the metals and then filtered; the residue left on the filter paper was the pure ash. Both this and that coated with organic matter were studied. The adsorption isotherm for metals, humic/fulvic acids and metal-humic/fulvic acid complexes in the metal-free sludge ash and in the organic matter in the pure system were studied using the Freundlich relationship. Good agreement was found suggesting that sediment and humic/fulvic acids have an important role in the mobility, dispersion and sedimentation of metal ions in an aquatic environment. More of these heavy metals are removed in the pure system than in the natural system. This may be due to the lesser availability of humic and fulvic acids in the lagoons during the short detention time of sewage in suspension in the oxidation pond, whereas the sludge which has settled to the bottom of the pond for several years contains rich decomposed organic matter in the form of humic and fulvic acids containing heavy metals. Such pure systems could be useful for the effective removal of heavy metals.  相似文献

Summary Heavy metal-loaded sewage sludge was leached abiotically using FeCl2 and FeCl3 which are applied in waste water treatment plants to eliminate phosphate and for coagulation. Due to the hydrolyzing nature of ferric iron, ferric chloride (100 mmll L–1) was able to solubilize more than 90% of copper and zinc and more than 80% of cadmium, with an optimal pulp density of 3% (w/v), after 10 h of exposition at 25°C. Chromium, lead and nickel were solubilized to an extent of 40–70%. With the exception of copper (redoxolysis), all heavy metals monitored were leached following the principle of acidolysis. Chemical leaching with iron resulted in a secondary contamination of sewage sludge (96 g iron per kg dry weight). The insoluble iron compounds which were precipitated for adsorbed to sludge flocks could be resolubilized with oxalic acid (100 mM, pH<3.3) up to an extent of 90%. Iron was leached by acidolysis and held in solution by complexation with oxalic acid. The pH optimum for the treatment of sewage sludge with 100 mmol L–1 oxalic acid was pH 3.3. At this pH an excessive solubilization of nutrient elements and compounds (phosphorus, nitrogen, alkali and alkali earth elements) could be avoided concomitantly leaching 75% iron. Furthermore the hydrophobicity of the sewage sludge was significantly reduced as a result of treatment with iron chloride.Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (isolated from arsenopyrite and adapted on sewage sludge) utilized ferrous iron as an energy source in the presence of chloride ions (FeCl2) as efficiently as ferrous sulphate. No toxic effects of oxalic acid onT. ferrooxidans were observed at the prevailing concentration.  相似文献

Influence of humic substances (HS) on bioavailability of Cu and Zn was characterized during 120 days co-composting of sewage sludge and maize straw. At the initial stage of composting, Cu and Zn in sewage sludge were released as organic matter was degraded, and water soluble Cu and Zn increased markedly. Water soluble Cu and FA content decreased after 21 days whereas water soluble Zn increased during the whole process. Both HA-Cu and HA-Zn were significantly and positively correlated with HA and H/F, respectively. At the end of composting, the distribution coefficients of HA-Cu and HA-Zn reached 27.50% and 3.33% respectively with HA-Cu/HA-Zn ratio increased from 1.29 to 2.73. The results suggest that Cu combined with HA more strongly than Zn, and composting treatment could decrease bioavailability of Cu markedly.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of the multiflora rose var. “Jatar” (Rosa multiflora Thunb. ex Murray) and the Virginia fanpetals (Sida hermaphrodita Rusby) to phytoextract heavy metals from municipal sewage sludge. The 6-year field experiment involved four levels of fertilization with sewage sludge at doses of 0, 10, 20, 40, and 60 Mg DM (Dry Mass) sludge ha?1. The increasing doses of sewage sludge were found to significantly increase the yield of multiflora rose and Virginia fanpetals biomass. They also significantly increased the content of heavy metals in these plants. The highest uptake of heavy metals by the multiflora rose and Virginia fanpetals crops was recorded at the fertilization dose of 60 Mg DM ? ha?1. Our investigations show that the Virginia fanpetals was more efficient in the phytoextraction of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd from the sewage sludge than the multiflora rose, due to the greater yields and higher heavy metal uptake by the former plant. In turn, the multiflora rose phytoextracted greater amounts of Pb from the sewage sludge. The analyses indicate that the Virginia fanpetals can be used for phytoremediation (phytoextraction) of heavy metals contained in sewage sludge.  相似文献

Wastewater irrigated fields can cause potential contamination with heavy metals to soil and groundwater, thus pose a threat to human beings . The current study was designed to investigate the potential human health risks associated with the consumption of okra vegetable crop contaminated with toxic heavy metals. The crop was grown on a soil irrigated with treated wastewater in the western region of Saudi Arabia during 2010 and 2011. The monitored heavy metals included Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn for their bioaccumulation factors to provide baseline data regarding environmental safety and the suitability of sewage irrigation in the future. The pollution load index (PLI), enrichment factor (EF) and contamination factor (CF) of these metals were calculated. The pollution load index of the studied soils indicated their level of metal contamination. The concentrations of Ni, Pb, Cd and Cr in the edible portions were above the safe limit in 90%, 28%, 83% and 63% of the samples, respectively. The heavy metals in the edible portions were as follows: Cr > Zn > Ni > Cd > Mn > Pb > Cu > Fe. The Health Risk Index (HRI) was >1 indicating a potential health risk. The EF values designated an enhanced bio-contamination compared to other reports from Saudi Arabia and other countries around the world. The results indicated a potential pathway of human exposure to slow poisoning by heavy metals due to the indirect utilization of vegetables grown on heavy metal-contaminated soil that was irrigated by contaminated water sources. The okra tested was not safe for human use, especially for direct consumption by human beings. The irrigation source was identified as the source of the soil pollution in this study.  相似文献

Disposal of sewage water in cultivated soils often containing considerable amount of potentially toxic metals such as Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, Pb and Cr can be beneficial or harmful to plant growth, rhizobial survival, nodulation and nitrogen fixation. Soil samples from 14 such locations were collected. Symbiotic effectivity of host-Rhizobium leguminosarum symbiosis in these soils was assessed. The total metal contents of Cd, Cu, Zn and Ni in all the 14 samples collected from farmer's fields receiving sewage water ranged between 1.3 and 6.7, 55.8-353.2, 356.0-1028.0 and 90.0-199.7 mg kg(-1) of soil, respectively. In Rohtak 1 soil, levels of Cd, Cu and Zn were highest while Ni was highest in Sonipat 2 soil. The content of available Cd, Cu, Zn and Ni in these soils ranged from 1.0-29.3; 6.2-47.0; 2.4-13.5, respectively, and was 2-9 percent of their total metal contents. All the N2 fixing parameters in pea and Egyptian clover were adversely affected by the presence of heavy metals. Available Cd and Cu contents significantly affected the N contents of pea and Egyptian clover plants, whereas Ni contents were negatively correlated with the plant biomass of pea and Egyptian clover.  相似文献

Column experiments were conducted to investigate the removal of heavy metals from two mine tailings (El Arteal and Jaravías) using sewage sludge as a reactive material. When sewage sludge is used as a reactive material on the El Arteal tailings (sample SA), Fe, Mn, Zn and Pb are removed and Cu and Ni are mobilized. The experiments carried out on the Jaravías tailings give similar results, showing the retention of Cu, Pb, Fe and Mn and the mobilization of Ni and Zn. An analysis performed using the PHREEQC numerical code suggests that the retention of Fe in the sewage sludge may be caused by the precipitation of Fe(OH)2.7Cl0.3 and possibly pyrite, and that the retention of Pb at high pH may be caused by the formation of stable phase minerals such as Pb(OH)2 and PbS in these conditions. Ni mobilization in the column experiments with the two tailings samples may be caused by the presence of significant amounts of leachable Ni in the sewage sludge. The complexation of metals with dissolved organic matter, calculated with the Minteq model, may be moderate.  相似文献

This study demonstrated the feasibility to produce Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki (Btk) based biopesticides using wastewater sludge as raw materials under solid-state fermentation (SSF). More than 1010 CFU/g viable cells of Btk were obtained using sludge or its mixture with agricultural wastes. This study well considered the effect of heavy metals on Btk growth and their changes of chemical speciation caused by SSF. The IC50 (concentration causing 50% inhibition in total cell biomass) for Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III) on Btk were determined to be 227, 82, 15 and 263 mg/L, respectively. Exposure to 150 mg/L of Cu(II) severely reduced the amount and size of toxin crystals, which decreased the endotoxin synthesis and entomotoxicity potency of Btk cells. Using Tessier’s sequential extraction procedure, the exchangeable heavy metals in sludge were shown to be transformed into residual fractions after SSF, and thus significantly reduced their bioavailability and potential environmental risks.  相似文献

Olive oil waste as a biosorbent for heavy metals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The sourcing of novel, inexpensive biowastes such as olive mill waste (OMW) from the two-decanter olive-oil-production system offers potential for the removal of metal ions by biosorption. OMW can be used in repeated regeneration cycles for the adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The metal ions sequestered can be released in an acid solution until the concentration of these metal ions reaches a level where conventional methods can be used to provide economic metal recovery and potential revenue generation. The ability of this biomass to adsorb more than one metal ion from solution may increase its potential for application in the wastewater industry since the majority of industrial effluents contain more than one metallic species. Metal ion adsorption was found to increase with the speed of agitation and at an optimum pH value of between 4 and 7.  相似文献

Treated municipal sewage sludge (TSS) was applied to the cotton plant at rates of 10, 20 and 30 t/ha per year. Seed cotton yield (71.4%), lint yield (67.7%) and cottonseed yield (74.1%) were increased significantly when sludge was applied at a rate of 30 t/ha (TSS3). The effects of TSS applications on seed yield, lint yield and cottonseed yield were listed as TSS3 > TSS2 > CF > TSS1 > C according to the applications. The increasing TSS levels had a positive effect and increased the total N concentration compared to the control. The highest N value was observed in TSS3 plots, while the lowest value was recorded in control (C) plots. The highest P value was found in control (C) at 0.80% and in 10 t/ha (TSS1) at 0.80%, while the lowest value was found in the TSS2 application (0.70%). The K concentration of cottonseed increased with the increasing TSS rates, from 1.56% in control plots to 2.20% in 20 t/ha application (TSS2). Corresponding to the TSS levels, the calcium of plant tissues was determined by a range of 0.12–0.13%. The treatments of TSS and mineral fertilizer had similar effects on the Mg content of cottonseed, which was in the range of 0.38–0.43%. Na content in plant tissue increased with increasing dose of sludge application compared to control soils. Increasing doses of TSS had no significant effect on the concentrations of iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn) and boron (B) in cottonseed. The order of the elements with respect to their amounts in cottonseed was as follows: Fe > Zn > Na > B > Mn > Cu. The concentrations of non-essential elements (Ni, Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg and As) in cottonseed were below the permissible limits.  相似文献

The present work developed a novel technique to treat chromite ore processing residue (COPR). The process involved mixing the COPR with sewage sludge followed by pyrolysis. The gaseous organic fraction generated during pyrolysis of sludge was beneficial to Cr(VI) reduction. Process variables, such as the amount of sludge added to COPR (sludge-to-COPR (S/C) ratio), heating temperature, reaction time and particle size, were systematically varied, and their influences on the Cr(VI) reduction in COPR were investigated. Cr(VI) content had decreased greatly, from 3384 mg kg−1 for untreated COPR to less than 30 mg kg−1 for COPR treated at 600 °C.  相似文献

Activated carbons were prepared from sewage sludge by chemical activation. Pyrolusite was added as a catalyst during activation and carbonization. The influence of the mineral addition on the properties of the activated carbons produced was evaluated. The results show that activated carbons from pyrolusite-supplemented sewage sludge had up to a 75% higher BET surface area and up to a 66% increase in mesoporosity over ordinary sludge-based activated carbons. Batch adsorption experiments applying the prepared adsorbents to synthetic dye wastewater treatment yielded adsorption data well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm. The adsorbents from pyrolusite-supplemented sludges performed better in dye removal than those without mineral addition, with the carbon from pyrolusite-augmented sludge T2 presenting a significant increase in maximum adsorption capacity of 50 mg/g. The properties of the adsorbents were improved during pyrolusite-catalyzed pyrolysis via enhancement of mesopore production, thus the mesopore channels may provide fast mass transfer for large molecules like dyes.  相似文献

Influence of bulking agent on sewage sludge composting process   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Four types of compost, consisting of mixtures of Acacia dealbata (A) with sewage sludge (SS) were studied in a laboratory reactor. Composting time was 80 days and parameters monitored over this period included temperature, organic matter, pH, CO2, O2, C/N ratio, Kjeldahl-N, as well as maturity indexes. All the studied parameters were influenced by the bulking amount used. The highest profile temperature measured was for the A/SS 1/2 (w/w) mixture that reached a maxima temperature of 67 °C and lower maximum temperatures of 52, 48 and 46 °C were observed for A/SS 1/3, 1/1 and 1/0 composts, respectively. The kinetic model used showed that a descent of sewage sludge in the composting mixtures favored the enzyme–substrate affinity. However, an increase in depending on the parameters of the process factors was observed when the sewage sludge ratio was increased in mixtures. The optimal amounts of sewage sludge for co-composting with Acacia indicate that moderate amounts of sludge (1/1) would be the best compromise.  相似文献
