Urinary iodine excretion was assessed in 642 healthy children aged 10 mo (n=243), 2 yr (n=183), and 4 yr (n=216) living in the Paris area and originating from continental France (60.3%), North Africa (13.8%), the West Indies (9.1%), West Africa (8.3%), Southeast Asia (4.8%), and southern Europe (3.8%). Mild impairment of neurological (reflexes, tone, audiometry) and intellectual development (Brunet-Lézine scale) was assessed in relation to iodine status. Iodine excretions (median values) were 18.4, 11.9, and 10.9 μg/100 mL at 10 mo, 2 yr, and 4 yr, respectively, and risk of mild iodine deficiency (5–10 μg/100 mL) was 18.1%, 34.8%, and 38.3% for the same age groups. No relationship was found between anthropometry, global development quotient, and iodine status. High hearing thresholds were more commonly associated with lower iodine excretion, suggesting mild hearing defects. In spite of iodine prophylaxis, the risk of mild to moderate iodine deficiency still exists in France and in a number of European countries. Evaluation of neurological sequels of borderline iodine status is a major public health problem in European communities.  相似文献

Studies have evidenced that zinc metabolism is altered in presence of Down syndrome, and zinc seems to have a relationship with the metabolic alterations usually present in this syndrome. In this work, the Zn-related nutritional status of adolescents with Down syndrome was evaluated by means of biochemical parameters and diet. A case–control study was performed in a group of adolescents with Down syndrome (n = 30) and a control group (n = 32), of both sexes, aged 10 to 19 years. Diet evaluation was accomplished by using a 3-day dietary record, and the analysis was performed by the NutWin program, version 1.5. Antropometric measurements were performed for evaluation of body composition. The Zn-related nutritional status of the groups was evaluated by means of zinc concentration determinations in plasma and erythrocytes, and 24-h urinary zinc excretion, by using the method of atomic absorption spectroscopy. The diet of both groups presented adequate concentrations of lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and zinc. The mean values found for zinc concentration in erythrocytes were 49.2 ± 8.5 μg Zn/g Hb for the Down syndrome group and 35.9 ± 6.1 μg Zn/g Hb for the control group (p = 0.001). The average values found for zinc concentration in plasma were 67.6 ± 25.6 μg/dL for the Down syndrome group and 68.9 ± 22.3 μg/dL for the control group. The mean values found for zinc concentration in urine were 244.3 ± 194.9 μg Zn/24 h for the Down syndrome group and 200.3 ± 236.4 μg Zn/24 h for the control group. Assessment of body composition revealed overweight (26.7%) and obesity (6.6%) in the Down syndrome group. In this study, patients with Down syndrome presented altered zinc levels for some cellular compartments, and the average zinc concentrations were low in plasma and urine and elevated in erythrocytes.  相似文献

Plasma zinc, copper, and parameters of growth were measured in a group of 116 French preschool children, 2–5 yr-old from low-income households. Participants were selected on the basis of Z-scores of weight for height (WHZ) and height for age (HAZ). Zinc and copper concentrations of children with growth impairment (GI), defined by a WHZ and/or HAZ< −1 Z-score, were compared to those of age, sex, and ethnic origin matched controls (WHZ and HAZ >−1 Z-score). Mean (±SD) plasma zinc concentration was 12.58±1.84 μmol/L in the GI group, and 13.27±1.98 μmol/L in the controls. The difference of the means of paired samples was 0.69±2.34, and by pairedt-test the significance reachedp=0.028. This effect was primarily a result of the weight retarded group (WHZ <−1 Z-score,p<0.009) and to the girls (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in plasma copper concentrations between groups. These results suggest the presence of marginal zinc deficiency in French preschool children with low weight for height Z-scores.  相似文献

Serum zinc was measured in 20 adolescent gymnasts (9 boys, 11 girls, age 12–15 yr) explored for detecting possible adverse effects of intense training on pubertal maturation and growth. They had low serum zinc (0.599±0.026 mg/L) when compared to matched control sedentary children (n=118 mean 0.81±0.014p<0.001). Girls had lower zinc than boys (0.557±0.023 vs 0.651±0.044p<0.001). Zinc was correlated to isometric adductor strength (r=0.468p<0.05). Children with serum zinc <0.6 mg/L had lower insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 than others (2.326±0.264 vs 2.699±0.12p<0.01). Thus, zinc is lowered in trained adolescent gymnasts and even lower in females. This reduction could play some role in abnormalities of puberty, growth, or muscular performance.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare plasma leptin, plasma zinc, and plasma copper levels and their relationship in trained female and male judo athletes (n = 10 women; n = 8 men). Blood samples were obtained 24 h after training to measure plasma zinc, copper, and leptin levels. Subjects presented similar values to age (22 ± 2 years old), body mass index (24 ± 1 kg/m2), plasma zinc (17.2 ± 2 μmol/L), copper (12.5 ± 2 μmol/L), and leptin (5.6 ± 1.3 μg/L). However, height, total body mass, lean mass, fat mass, and sum of ten-skinfold thickness were higher in male than female. Plasma leptin was associated with sum of ten skinfolds in male (r = 0.91; p < 0.001) and female athletes (r = 0.84; p < 0.003). Plasma zinc was associated with leptin in males (r = 0.82; p < 0.05) while copper was associated with plasma leptin in females (r = 0.66; p < 0.05). Our results suggest that young judo athletes lost sex-related differences in leptin levels. Plasma zinc, plasma copper, and energy homeostasis may be involved in regulation of plasma leptin.  相似文献

Objective: The objective was to determine the prevalences of overweight and obesity in regional Australian children and to examine the association between BMI and indicators of socioeconomic status (SES). Research Methods and Procedures: Regionally representative cross‐sectional survey of 2184 children, 4 to 12 years of age, was conducted, and the socio‐demographic characteristics of their parents from regional Victoria, Australia, 2003 to 2004, were obtained. Results: The prevalences of overweight and obesity were 19.3 ± 0.8% (proportion ± standard error) and 7.6 ± 0.6%, respectively, using international criteria, and the proportion of overweight/obese girls was significantly higher than that of boys (29.6 ± 1.4% vs. 23.9 ± 1.3%, χ2 = 9.01, p = 0.003). Children from households of lower SES had higher odds of being overweight/obese; lower SES was defined by lower paternal education (adjusted odds ratio, 1.18; 95% confidence interval, 1.08 to 1.30) and lower area‐level SES (adjusted odds ratio, 1.13; 95% confidence interval, 1.02 to 1.25), adjusted for age, gender, height, and clustering by school. Discussion: The prevalences of overweight and obesity are increasing in Australian children by about one percentage point per year. This equates to ~40,000 more overweight children each year, placing Australian children among those at highest risk around the world. In addition, girls are more likely to be overweight, and there is a general trend for children of lower SES to be at even greater risk of overweight and obesity.  相似文献

Serum zinc and hair zinc concentrations of some New Zealand children aged 11 yr, were examined in relation to selected anthropometric indices. Serum zinc concentrations (n=453) in boys and girls were similar and were unrelated to anthropometric indices and hair zinc concentrations. Mean hair zinc concentration (n=620) of the girls was higher than that for the boys (2.95±0.49 vs 2.46±0.47 μmol/g; p<0.001). Correlation analysis demonstrated that, for the boys, all the studied anthropometric indices, with the exception of height, were significantly related to hair zinc concentration and that the confounding effects of mid-parent height and the timing of the adolescent growth spurt was small. Results for the girls were similar but less significant. Dichotomizing the hair zinc results divided both the boys and girls into two groups: those with hair zinc <2.44 μmol/g were heavier (girls, 39.0 vs 35.2 kg; boys, 36.6 vs 34.7 kg) and fatter (mid-upper-arm fat area: girls, 15.2 vs 12.0 cm2; boys, 11.1 vs 9.5 cm2) compared to their counterparts with hair zinc >2.44 μmol/g. The results demonstrate that in these healthy New Zealand children, those with lower hair zinc concentrations are fatter and heavier than their high-hair-zinc counterparts.  相似文献

Premature graying of hair with unclear etiology, which is known as premature canities, is a common cause of referrals to the dermatologists. We assessed the relationship between serum iron, copper, and zinc concentrations with premature canities. This study was conducted on patients under 20 years old suffering from premature canities, having a minimum of ten gray hair fibers, and referring to university hospitals of Isfahan (Iran). The results were compared with age–sex-matched controls. Demographic data and disease characteristics were recorded for two groups. We studied serum iron, copper, and zinc concentrations of 66 patients and 66 controls using atomic absorption and Ferrozine methods. The mean age of studied cases was 17.8 ± 2.0 years, and the mean age of the onset of canities was 15.5 ± 3.2 years with no significant difference between males and females (P > 0.05). Serum copper concentration was significantly lower in patients compared with controls (90.7 ± 37.4 vs. 105.3 ± 50.2 μg/dL, P = 0.048), but serum iron concentration was significantly lower in controls compared to patients (88.8 ± 39.5 vs. 108.3 ± 48.4 μg/dL, P = 0.008). Also, there was no significant difference between patients and controls in serum zinc concentration (114.8 ± 67.8 vs. 108.2 ± 49.9 μg/dL, P = 0.285). According to these results, among copper, zinc, and iron, a low serum copper concentration may play a role in premature graying of hairs in our society. Further studies are needed to find the underlying mechanism of this relationship.  相似文献

Two-wk-old broiler chicks were inoculated via crop intubation withEimeria acervulina at two doses: 105 or 106 sporulated oocysts/bird or withEimeria tenella at a dose of 105 sporulated oocysts/bird. Serum and liver samples were collected on days 3 and 6 post-inoculation (PI). There were no significant changes in serum or liver zinc, copper, and iron concentrations in any of the infected groups by 3 d PI. However, on d 6, PI serum protein was significantly reduced in all of the infected groups compared to their pair-fed controls. The chicks infected withE. tennella had significantly reduced serum zinc (1.20 vs 1.77 μg/mL) and iron (0.44 vs 1.28 μg/mL) concentrations and significantly elevated serum copper (0.28 vs 0.17 μg/mL) and ceruloplasmin levels (20.33 vs 11.11 μg/mL) compared to their pair-fed counterparts. Those chicks infected withE. acervulina (106 oocysts/bird) exhibited significantly reduced serum iron concentration by 6 days PI (0.90 vs 1.14 μg/mL). Liver zinc was significantly increased in the chicks infected withE. tenella (349 vs 113 μg/g dry liver wt), as was copper (24 vs 19 μg/g), whereas liver iron concentration was significantly reduced (172 vs 243 μg/g) compared to pair-fed controls. At both dose levels, the chicks infected withE. acervulina exhibited a significant reduction in liver iron by 6 d PI. Hepatic cytosol metals generally reflected whole tissue levels. Metallothionein (MT)-bound zinc was significantly elevated in the chicks infected withE. tenella. Iron bound to a high molecular weight, heat-stable protein fraction (presumably cytoplasmic ferritin) was significantly reduced in chicks infected withE. acervulina, as well as those infected withE. tenella. Collectively, the changes in serum zinc, copper, and iron concentrations, as well as the changes in hepatic zinc and MT-zinc concentrations in the chicks infected withE. tenella were similar to changes evoked during an acute phase response to infection. It is possible that a secondary bacterial infection or inflammation stemming from erosion of the lining of the cecum may play a role in the response of trace element metabolism to theE. tenella infection. Data on zinc concentration in the human body may be used to interpret the results obtained in cases of chronic and acute poisonings with zinc compounds, i.e., in clinical and forensic toxicology. In this paper, the concentrations of zinc in human tissues and body fluids obtained from autopsy cases concerning non-poisoned people (n = 203), aged from 14 to 80 years, between 1995 and 2008, are presented. The following values were found by the flame atomic absorption method (mean ± SD, median, range, in microgram per gram or microgram per milliliter): brain 10.3 ± 1.36, 10.2, 7.99–13.8 (n = 48); stomach 14.2 ± 3.63, 13.6, 8.00–22.5 (n = 71); intestines 15.7 ± 5.22, 15.8, 8.36–28.1 (n = 35); liver 39.6 ± 16.1, 36.6, 16.0–78.8 (n = 109); kidney 33.8 ± 10.1, 31.8, 16.4–60.9 (n = 93); lung 12.0 ± 3.88, 11.0, 6.13–18.7 (n = 26); spleen 14.7 ± 2.53, 14.6, 11.4–18.3 (n = 5); heart 26.5 ± 3.63, 26.7, 22.5–31.8 (n = 5); blood 6.81 ± 1.21, 7.00, 4.02–8.68 (n = 50); urine 0.69 ± 1.70, 0.60, 0.39–1.00 (n = 5), and bile 4.92 ± 1.64, 3.75, 3.20–7.09 (n = 9). The accuracy of the method was checked through the use of SRM Bovine Liver 1577b (certified: 127 ± 16 μg Zn/g, found: 117 ± 0.7 μg Zn/g (n = 6)).  相似文献

The bioavailabilities of selenium (Se) from Se-rich fish species and Se-rich wheat were compared in a study involving 32 healthy volunteers. Initial serum Se values were 109±16 μg/L (mean±SD). For 6 wk, one group (n=11) included Se-rich bread in their diet, bringing daily average intake of Se up to 135±25 μg/d. Another group (n=11) consumed Se-rich fish daily (average Se intake: 115±31 μg/d), whereas the control group (n=10) ate their normal diet, providing 77±25 μg Se/d. Serum Se increased by 17% (P<0.01), and platelet Se increased by 30% (P<0.01) in the wheat group. Although platelet Se decreased by 11% in the fish group, no changes in serum and platelet Se in the fish or control group reached statistical significance. Glutathione peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.9; GSH-Px) activity in serum and platelets did not change during the study, nor did platelet mercury (Hg) content. Since the dietary intake of Hg, arsenium (As), and fatty acids could not satisfactorily explain the lack of response in the fish group, the results are indicative of low bioavailability of fish Se in humans. At present, wheat Se seems to be the most important factor contributing to the body stores of Se in this study population. Dr. Norheim died on January 9, 1991.  相似文献

The effect of a multivitamin-mineral supplement was investigated during pregnancy according to a double-blind protocol by determining zinc and copper in maternal plasma, mononuclear and polynuclear zinc and copper at the third, sixth, eighth, and ninth months of gestation. The subjects were supplemented from the first trimester until delivery. A significant decrease was observed in plasma zinc that varied from 11.5 μmol/L to 10.8 μmol/L in the supplemented group (n=29) and from 11 μmol/L to 10 μmol/L in the placebo group (n=33) at 3 and 9 mo of gestation, respectively. In contrast, plasma copper levels increased in a way depending upon the stage of gestation in both groups: from 24.7 to 28.2 μmol/L in the treated group and from 24.9 to 30.9 μmol/L in the placebo group at 3 and 9 mo of gestation, respectively, but the difference was only significant in the placebo group. No difference between groups was observed in mononuclear and polynuclear zinc or copper levels. These trace elements were also determined in cord blood at delivery. There were no statistically significant differences in zinc and copper concentration found in placebo group and supplemented group. Finally, the beneficial effect of supplementation on muscular cramps and appearance of vergetures was noted.  相似文献

Objective: To determine whether serum cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), which is one of the physiologically active gene products secreted from adipose tissue, is increased and associated with atherogenic lipoprotein profile in obese children. Research Methods and Procedures: Subjects were 42 consecutive outpatient Japanese obese children, 29 boys and 13 girls, ranging in age from 5 to 14 years, and 25 age‐matched non‐obese children, 13 boys and 12 girls, as the control group for measuring CETP mass. Blood was drawn after an overnight fast and, at the same time, and anthropometric measurements including height, body weight, waist girth, hip girth, and triceps and subscapular skinfold thicknesses were taken. Paired samples were obtained from 15 obese children who underwent psychoeducational therapy. Serum CETP mass was assayed by an enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Results: The serum levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol (TC), low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, TC/high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), apolipoproteins (apo) B, apo B/apo A1, and insulin in obese children were significantly higher than the respective reference values. Serum CETP level was ~2‐fold higher (98.7 ± 3.6 vs. 50.9 ± 4.0 nM, means ± SEM, p < 0.001) in the obese children than in the controls. In 15 obese children, whose percentage of overweight declined during therapy, CETP levels decreased significantly. CETP level was correlated with HDLC, TC/HDLC, and insulin, and with percentage of overweight when the data of the obese and non‐obese children were combined. Discussion: CETP is increased and associated with the atherogenic lipoprotein profile in obese children.  相似文献

Anthropometric estimation of midarm muscularity and fatness was employed as a general index of nutritional status in developing countries. The present study attempts to evaluate the sex- and age-related pattern of regional muscle and fat area characteristics in Turkish children. A cross-sectional study was carried out on 1,068 10- to 14-year-old children (583 boys and 485 girls) from junior high schools in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. According to general anthropometric protocols, weight, height, triceps skinfold thickness, and midarm circumference measurements were taken and socioeconomic data were collected. Arm muscle area (AMA) and arm fat area (AFA) were calculated and centile curves were evaluated using least median squares method. Results showed significant sexual dimorphism in muscle and fat patterning. AFA was found to be higher among girls and AMA among boys. The present findings suggest that the different levels of socioeconomic status (SES) appeared to be more prevalent on muscularity among boys (p < 0.05) and adiposity among girls (p < 0.001).  相似文献

Physical growth disorders in under 5-year-old children are a common health problem in many countries including Iran. The aim of this study was to determine effects of supplemental zinc on physical growth in preschool children with retarded linear growth. This study was a community-based randomized controlled trial on 2–5-year-old children with height-for-age below 25th percentile of National Center for Health Statistics growth chart. Ninety children were randomly assigned in zinc group (ZG) or placebo group (PG). After 6 months of zinc or placebo supplementation, we followed up the children for another 6 months. Anthropometric indicators were measured before the intervention and then monthly for 11 months. Forty children in ZG and 45 in PG concluded the study. Zinc supplementation increased weight gain in boys (P = 0.04) and girls (P = 0.05) compared to placebo but had no significant effect on mid-upper arm circumference increment in either sexes. The most significant (P = 0.001) effect of Zinc supplementation was seen in boys’ height increment at the end of follow-up period. Stunted growth rate in ZG changed significantly (P = 0.01) from 26.7% to 2.5% throughout the study. This study showed that daily supplementation of 5 mg elemental zinc for 6 months improves physical growth in terms of height increment and weight gain in children with undesirable linear growth, especially in boys.  相似文献

An “anti-oxidant cocktail” consisting of betacarotene, vitamins B6, C, E, zinc, and selenium or corresponding placebos were given for one y as daily dietary supplements to 45 elderly residents of a nursing home. Initially, the serum TBA reactant levels were higher (2.7±0.7 μmol/L) than those of an ad hoc control group of healthy younger adults (2.3±0.6 μmol/L),p<0.01. After three mo supplementation, the levels among the verum elderly had decreased to 2.2±0.6 μmol/L, and they remained at this lower level until the end of the study period, whereas the placebo group showed no change. A significant inverse correlation (r=−0.428,p<0.01) existed between the concentrations of serum TBA reactants and whole blood selenium (B-Se), but only B-Se levels above 200 μg/L were associated with a decrease in serum lipid peroxides. Serum alpha-tocopherol concentration also correlated inversely with serum TBA reactants but this correlation (r=−0.273,p<0.76) was not as strong as that of B-Se. Deficient vitamin B6 status, in biochemical terms, was observed in 25% of the elderly; a daily supplement of 2 mg B6 fully cured all cases of deficiency. The verum group improved slightly in several psychological tests, whereas subjects on placebo remained unchanged or deteriorated during the follow-up period. Clinical amelioration among the verum subjects was reported by the nurses; no toxic side effects were reported. In conclusion, the elderly benefited biochemically and clinically of dietary antioxidant supplements.  相似文献

The selenium status and the relationship of whole-blood selenium and plasma homocysteine are reported for healthy human subjects living in Upper Silesia. A total of 1063 individuals (627 male and 436 female) examined for whole-blood selenium were subdivided into six groups according to age; the youngest included adolescents (n=143) aged 10–15 yr, and the oldest were centenarians (n=132). The mean Se content was relatively low (62.5±18.4 μg/L), and it tended to be higher in men (65.9±17.2 μg/L) than in women (57.5±18.9 μg/L). Selenium levels appeared to be age dependent, as the highest values were observed in young and middle-age adults (21–40 yr), whereas they were significantly lower in adolescents and in the elderly. In more than 40% of apparently healthy adults (aged 21–69 yr), the Se concentration was within the range 60–80 μg/L (i.e., below the lower limit of the nutritional adequacy range [80 μg/L]). A significant inverse correlation between whole-blood selenium and plasma total homocysteine was detected in a smaller population sample of middle-aged and elderly persons (n=204).  相似文献

This paper investigates the effect of epinastine, a selective octopamine antagonist in invertebrates, in Caenorhabditis elegans. Specifically, its ability to block the inhibitory action of octopamine on C. elegans-isolated pharynx was assayed. Isolated pharynxes were stimulated to pump by the addition of 500 nM 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) (113 ± 2 per 30 s, n = 15). Octopamine inhibited the 5-HT-induced pumping in a concentration-dependent manner (threshold 1–5 μM) with a 61 ± 11% inhibition with 50 μM (n = 5). Epinastine (0.1 μM) antagonized the inhibitory response to octopamine (P < 0.001; n = 15). Tyramine also inhibited pharyngeal pumping induced by 5-HT but was less potent than octopamine. Tyramine, 50 μM to 1 mM, gave a transient inhibition e.g. of 40 ± 5% at 50 μM (n = 5). A higher (10 μM) concentration of epinastine was required to block the tryamine response compared with octopamine. It is concluded that epinastine selectively antagonizes the effect of octopamine on C. elegans pharynx. Further studies are required to test its selectivity for octopamine in other tissues and other nematodes.  相似文献

Serum selenium levels were determined cross-sectionally in 57 HIV-infected patients who were classified according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) 1993 classification system. Mean serum selenium levels were lower in CDC stage II (58.7±12.2 μg/L;p<0.01;n=18) and stage III (47.6±11.3 μg/L;p<0.01;n=19) HIV-infected patients, than in healthy subjects (80.6±9.6 μg/L;n=48) and stage I patients (73.6±16.5 μg/L;n=20). Serum selenium levels were positively correlated with CD4 count, CD4/8 ratio, hematocrit, and serum albumin (r=0.42;r=0.39;r=0.48; andr=0.45;p<0.01, respectively) and inversely with serum levels of thymidine kinase (r=−0.49;p<0.01;n=49) and β2-microglobulin (r=−0.46;p<0.001;n=49). In addition, serum selenium levels in 20 randomly selected AIDS-free individuals (CDC I:n=10; CDC II:n=10) were inversely correlated with serum concentrations of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors (sTNFR) types I and II. There was no correlation with serum immuneglobulin A and total serum protein levels. The results show that the progressive deprivation of serum selenium in HIV-infection is associated with loss of CD4+-cells and with increased levels of markers of disease progression and inflammatory response.  相似文献

Neural tube defects are important causes of infant mortality and childhood morbidity. We investigated the relationship between zinc, selenium, copper, and lead concentrations and neural-tube-defect occurrence in women with a second-trimester termination due to fetal-neural-tube defects (NTDs) in this case-control study. Fourteen pregnant women whose pregnancies were terminated as a result of second-trimester ultrasonographic diagnosis of neural tube defects were recruited as cases. The control group (n=14) consisted of women who were selected among age-, gravidity-, and socio-economic-state (SES)-matched women who had a normal triple-screen and targeted ultrasound during the second trimester with documented normal fetal outcome. Zinc and copper determinations were made using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Graphite furnace AAS was used for Pb, and Se levels were measured with hydride generation AAS. Cases had significantly low serum zinc and selenium levels (62.48±15.9 vs 102.6±23.7 and 55.16±11.3 vs 77.4±5.5, respectively, p<0.001). Serum Cu and whole-blood Pb levels were significantly high when compared to controls. There was a negative correlation between serum zinc and selenium levels, and serum copper levels (r=−425 and −0.443, p<0.05). Our results are consistent with some previous reports. The etiology of NTDs cannot be explained with one strict etiologic mechanism. On the contrary, an interaction among environmental, genetic, and nutritional factors such as trace elements and vitamins would explain these anomalies. If folic acid supplementation is given, additional Zn supplementation should be considered for the further decrease in the recurrence and occurrence of NTDs.  相似文献
