This paper examines the history of Japanese genetics in the 1920s to 1950s as seen through the work of Hitoshi Kihara, a prominent wheat geneticist as well as a leader in the development of the discipline in Japan. As Kihara’s career illustrates, Japanese genetics developed quickly in the early twentieth century through interactions with biologists outside Japan. The interactions, however, ceased due to the war in the late 1930s, and Japanese geneticists were mostly isolated from outside information until the late 1940s. During the isolation in wartime and under the postwar U.S. Occupation, Kihara adapted to political changes. During wartime, he developed a research institute focusing on applied biology of various crops, which conformed to the national need to address food scarcity. After the war, he led the campaign for the establishment of a national institute of genetics and negotiated with American Occupation officers. The Americans viewed this Japanese effort with suspicion because of the rising popularity of the controversial theory of the Russian agronomist, Trofim Lysenko, in Japan. The institute was approved in 1949 partly because Kihara was able to bridge the gap between the American and Japanese sides. With Kihara’s flexible and generous leadership, Japanese genetics steadily developed, survived the wartime, and recovered quickly in the postwar period. The article discusses Kihara’s interest in cytoplasmic inheritance and his synthetic approach to genetics in this political context, and draws attention to the relation between Kihara’s genetics and agricultural practice in Japan.  相似文献

According to Plato, the society as reflected in Homer's epics is one without state power. In a society without state power, the act of revenge which the offended party prosecutes on the offender is the only disciplinary force, which should be endorsed by the ethical concepts of the society. Though the ethics of Homeric society has been analyzed before, there has been no theory on the ethical structure of Homeric society analyzed from the viewpoint of a society without state power. This study attempts to address this issue. Six concepts, "oath", "honor", "guest", "blood", "food" and "revenge" have been extracted from Homeric epics in comparison with the ethical structure of the Albanian Kanun. The ethical structure of Homeric society appears to belong to the category of the ethics of a society without state power, as represented by the ethical structure of the Kanun. Plato explicitly criticizes the ethical value system of Homeric society, which he thinks is alienated from the idea of Good.  相似文献

This article explores the processes through which the 'public secrecy' of rape during the Bangladesh war of 1971 operates within the present-day ethnographic context. It examines contemporary commemorations of the war and of women who have achieved local and national fame as rape victims (euphemistically referred to as 'war heroines'). The article analyses the discrepancy between raped women's national position as icons of 'honour' and their local reception through sanctions and constant khota (sarcastic/censorious remarks expressing scorn and evoking the unpleasant events). By exploring the relationship between scorn, honour, rape, sexuality, narratives of remembrance, and the emergence of 'public secrets'– and how these are interwoven by the subjectivity of the raped – the article argues that memories of rape are simultaneously located within the ambiguities of revelation and of concealment which are indispensable to the operations of power. In the process the article establishes the relationship between secrecy and memory. Further, a focus on the intersubjective domain of memory provides methodological and ethical tools with which to engage with narratives of the past relating to wartime violence.  相似文献

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a zoonotic disease causing meningitis, encephalitis, and meningoencephalitis. Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is an etiological agent of TBE. From an analysis of five distinct sequences of Japanese TBEV, it has been proposed that Japanese TBEV was transmitted from Russia to Japan on just a single occasion 260-430 years ago. Here thirteen distinct nucleotide sequences encoding the entire region of the envelope protein for Japanese TBEV were analyzed. It is shown, from the phylogenetic analysis, that Japanese TBEV belongs to the Far Eastern subtype, which is known to be highly pathogenic. Japanese TBEV was divided into three groups, and TBEV was inferred to have been transmitted between Japan and Russia at least three times, which were estimated to have occurred several hundred years ago. These results indicate that TBEV has not only been endemic but also transmitted multiple times to Japan.  相似文献

On March 11, 2011, the eastern portion of Japan was struck by a massive earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 15,700 people, left thousands of others hurt or missing, and caused widespread destruction. In addition, the Great East Japan Disaster seriously damaged the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power station, knocking out power, severely affecting communications, and causing a loss of cooling to some reactor cores. Significant quantities of radioactive materials were released, a "no go" zone was created around the crippled reactors, and thousands of people were evacuated. With concern about the radiological emergency growing, one of Japan's largest hospital and healthcare groups issued a request for assistance to a U.S.-based international disaster relief organization. After consultations with the Japanese, a special Radiological Emergency Assistance Mission was assembled. The mission, which traveled to Japan in April 2011, had several aims: (1) to rapidly assess the situation on the ground, (2) to exchange information, experiences, and insights with Japanese colleagues, and (3) to provide radiological information and practical refresher training to Japanese healthcare professionals and first responders. In addition to achieving these aims and laying the groundwork for future cooperation, the mission produced dozens of insights and lessons. These have potential relevance not only for future large-scale radiation accidents, but also for radiological and nuclear terrorism situations. They also have more general relevance for emergency planning, preparedness, and response. In this article, several of the most salient insights and lessons are highlighted.  相似文献

Disputes over brain death and euthanasia are used to illuminate the question whether there really is a Japanese way of thinking in bioethics. In Japanese thought, a person does not exist as an individual but as a member of the family, community or society. I describe these features of Japanese society as 'mutual dependency'. In this society, an act is 'good' and 'right' when it is commonly done, and it is 'bad' and 'wrong' when nobody else does it. Thus, outsiders to this ring of mutual dependency encounter ostracism. One feature of this society is a lack of open discussion which leads to the existence of multiple standards. This Japanese morality even prevails over written laws. In Japan, there is a public stance that euthanasia does not exist. On the other hand, there are certain decisions which have permitted euthanasia. Similarly, organ transplants were performed from brain dead donors, while that procedure was not accepted officially by the medical profession. In this situation, there is a danger that human rights will be neglected. So far bioethical approaches have not helped to work out these problems. This may be because Japanese think that bioethics is subordinate to morality. The current dispute over brain death involves a struggle for the establishment of a rational society in Japan. Overcoming mutual dependency and ostracism is essential to resolve this struggle and to lead Japan into a society of mutual respect where all individuals, families and communities are esteemed.  相似文献

The main contentions of this paper are twofold. First, there is a more than century-old Japanese tradition of human rights based on a fusion of Western concepts of natural rights and a radical reinterpretation of Confucianism, the major proponent of which was the Japanese thinker Nakae Chomin. Secondly, this tradition, although a minority view, is crucial for remedying the serious defects in the present Japanese medical system.
In the latter half of the nineteenth century, Nakae Chomin sought to reinterpret Chinese tradition, especially Confucianism, by injecting the concepts of popular sovereignty and democratic equality, drawn from Western sources. The resulting view maintained the Confucian commitment to a moral nexus for society, but replaced hierarchy with egalitarianism.
The pressing need for such an approach to patients' rights in present-day Japan is illustrated by two recent cases: the photographing and commercial exploitation of patients' genitals without serious response by authorities, and the attempt by physicians to manipulate the time of death and, possibly, to improperly pressure family members in order to transplant organs from the brain-dead victim of a criminal assault.
Such problems stem from hierarchy and paternalism, which seem to be a legacy of the rapid, state-sponsored introduction of Western medicine in the mid-nineteenth century, and in particular from the government's adoption of and support for German military medicine as a model for Japan.  相似文献

We applied the theory of random genetic drift to determine the divergence history of a closed cattle population over the relatively short timescale of several hundred years. The divergence history of the closed population of Mishima Island cattle, a national natural treasure of Japan, was examined, and the results were compared with historical documents. Inbreeding depression in the isolated population was investigated for body size and fertility. Twenty-one DNA microsatellite markers in Mishima Island cattle and 3 major breeds from the mainland were genotyped. For the mainland breeds, all 21 or 20 markers were segregating. However, nearly half the number of loci (9 of 21) was fixed in the Island cattle. The average number of alleles per locus of Island cattle was markedly lower than that in the mainland breeds. These results support the theory that Island cattle have been isolated for a considerable period of time. The number of generations of isolation was estimated as 14.1-22.6, and the year of divergence was calculated as 1778-1846. In view of these findings, we propose that Island cattle diverged from the mainland population at around 1800 and were isolated for about 200 years. These estimates are in agreement with historical documents showing that divergence occurred between 1672 and 1880. The total inbreeding coefficient of the present population was predicted to be in the range of 0.51-0.60. However, historical reports dated over 100 years do not support changes in fertility, so that there is no evidence for inbreeding depression.  相似文献

A total of 978 Japanese students, who visited the health services center of a college in Japan for medical check-ups, were asked to anonymously complete a 55-item questionnaire which assessed their attitudes toward sex and sexual behavior. Seven hundred eighty-five Japanese students (80.3%) responded to the questionnaire. In this survey, 90% of male students and 83% of female students indicated that they expected to have sexual intercourse before marriage, while 8% of male students and 3% of female students indicated that it was not wrong to have extramarital sexual intercourse after marriage. In addition, 75% of sexually experienced students reported that they used a condom during their first sexual intercourse, while 73% reported using a condom during their most recent sexual intercourse. The more sexual partners students had had up to the time of the study, the less condom use they reported for both their first and most recent sexual intercourse. The proportion of Japanese students who used a condom is high in comparison to that of students in other countries. However, as students are prone to have sexual intercourse with non-steady, casual partners, more efforts are needed to promote safe sex practices among college students in Japan.  相似文献

This article explores how people in the former Maoist heartland of Nepal adopted previously transgressive norms and practices during the decade of the People's War (1996‐2006). By examining the rise in practices of beef‐eating and inter‐caste commensality, this article suggests that the temporal dimension of wartime ‘when different rules apply’ was crucial in making people accept new ideas and break established norms on a scale atypical for the ‘normal’ times of peace. Analysing the agency of Maoist activists, who self‐consciously tried to implement a project of radical social transformation, and those people who were caught in the midst of the Maoist transformative endeavour, this article argues that the contours of the ‘new society’ emerged not only due to revolutionaries’ intentional actions but also because of the ‘exceptional’ nature of wartime, which forced people to radically re‐create their daily lives. By transgressing social norms, ‘ordinary’ people did not deliberately undermine the normative order, but rather responded to the constraints of wartime, when people's agency and ethical choices were mostly driven by the need to secure the survival of their families and ensure the continuity of life itself.  相似文献

Human keratoconus is a common corneal disease with non-inflammatory corneal ectasia, and a subset of this disease is heritable. In an effort to establish animal models for this disease, we discovered Japanese keratoconus (JKC) mice among Mishima molosinus (MSM) mice, an inbred strain of Japanese wild mice (Mus musculus molossinus). Typical phenotypic corneas of JKC mice are, like human keratoconus, conical in shape, although the corneas were often associated with a red punctum at the tip. In contrast to human keratoconus, histological examination revealed the inflammatory changes such as infiltration of capillaries and hematocytes in JKC mouse corneas. Although JKC mouse corneal change is probably secondary to keratitis and is a mouse-specific keratopathy, its pathogenesis may be relevant to that of human keratoconus. Linkage analysis mapped the responsible gene at the markers D13Mit21, D13Mit252, D13Mit279, and D13Mit39, which are located between 21.9 and 34.0 cm of the mouse Chr 13. Candidate genes in this region include genes for cathepsins, interleukin, and chemotaxin. Further study of JKC mice may shed light on pathogenesis of human keratoconus.  相似文献

In the hope of future treatments to prevent or slow down the disease, there is a strong movement towards an ever‐earlier detection of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In conjunction with scientific developments, this has prompted a reconceptualization of AD, as a slowly progressive pathological process with a long asymptomatic phase. New concepts such as ‘preclinical’ and ‘prodromal’ AD have been introduced, raising a number of conceptual and ethical questions. We evaluate whether these new concepts are theoretically defensible, in light of theories of health and disease, and whether they should be understood as disease or as an at‐risk state. We introduce a pragmatic view on disease concepts and argue that an evaluation of the reconceptualization of AD should also take its aims and effects into account, and assess their ethical acceptability. The reconceptualization of AD is useful to coordinate research into preventive strategies, and may potentially benefit future patients. However, in the short term, early detection and labelling of ‘preclinical AD’ can potentially harm people. Since there is no treatment available and the predictive value is unclear, it may only create a group of ‘patients‐in‐waiting’ who may suffer from anxiety, uncertainty and stigmatization, but will never actually develop dementia. We conclude that only if the promise of preventive medication materializes, will the reconceptualization of AD turn out unequivocally to be for the better. Otherwise, the reconceptualization may do more harm than good.  相似文献

Mesial-distal and buccal-lingual crown measurements were made on male and female samples of recent Japanese teeth from three locations, Fukuoka, Kyoto, and Tokyo, and for Hokkaido Ainu and Koreans. Similar data were collected for prehistoric Middle-to-Late Jomon Japanese and from Yayoi specimens representing the first agriculturalists to appear in Japan. From a tooth-by-tooth comparison of cross-sectional areas, it was shown that the modern Japanese samples did not differ from one part of Japan to another. Korean tooth size also is not significantly different from Japanese, while Ainu have the smallest teeth recorded in Asia. The Yayoi who brought rice to Japan about 300 B.C. came in with teeth that were the same size as Chinese Neolithic teeth. They encountered a resident Jomon population whose teeth were 10% smaller. From tooth size measures alone, it is most economical to suggest that, if the rates of reduction observed elsewhere in the world applied in Japan, the recent Ainu would best be regarded as the direct descendants of the Jomon, while the modern Japanese are the results of in situ reduction from the incoming Yayoi. Other aspects of craniofacial morphology suggest that some Jomon was incorporated by the Yayoi. The modern Japanese, then, while predominantly derived from the Yayoi, would include a Jomon component.  相似文献

To develop a risk-assessment system for small organisms accidentally introduced with imported organisms, we investigated as a first case study parasitic canestriniid mites, which have been imported into Japan via pet lucanid beetles from Southeast Asia. We collected mites from pinned specimens of Japanese lucanids collected before 1999—when the Japanese government lifted a ban on the import of the beetles—and living mites from imported and native lucanid beetles collected after that. No foreign canestriniid was found on any of the native Japanese beetles. Because the mites collected from imported beetles were different from Japanese species, we conclude that the foreign mites have not yet established wild populations in Japan. However, because the Japanese mites migrate between hosts without host physical contact, introduced mites are assumed to be able to migrate from a foreign to Japanese host. In fact, possible contamination was observed in pet shops. We observed host switching in only one direction: Southeast Asian Canestrinia nr spectanda switched to Japanese Dorcus rectus, but Japanese Coleopterophagus berlesei never switched to Indonesian D. titanus. The foreign mites reproduced between 15°C and 25°C, suggesting that the mites could survive in mountainous sites in southern Japan and at low elevations in northern Japan. The ability of foreign parasitic canestriniids to infect and survive on Japanese hosts at temperatures characteristic of much of Japan leads us to conclude that these mites present a potential risk to Japanese endemic canestriniids as well as to native Japanese lucanids.  相似文献

Individuals who are homozygotes for mutations in DNA repair genes are at high risk for cancer. It is not well documented, however, if the heterozygous carriers of the mutation are also predisposed to cancer. To address the issue, xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) in Japan is an interesting candidate because of three major reasons: XP is an autosomal recessive disorder with an enormously elevated risk of skin cancer, the frequency of XP patients is higher in Japan than in other parts of the world, and more than half of Japanese XP patients are homozygous for the same founder mutation in the XPA gene. We screened archival blood samples from Japanese individuals who resided in Hiroshima or Nagasaki. A simple PCR-RFLP method was developed that is highly specific for detection of XPA heterozygotes carrying the founder mutation. We identified nine XPA heterozygotes among 1,020 individuals screened for a prevalence of 0.88%. This rate, if representative, implies that there are about 1 million carriers of the XPA founder mutation in the Japanese population. Thus, investigation of their cancer risk may be warranted.  相似文献

The term neurasthenia, which had been widely used in Japan before the Second World War, came to be replaced by the term neurosis thereafter. With this change in terminology, there seems to have been a shift in the popular ideas of minor psychiatric disorders towards a more psychological view. Unlike in the West where psychoanalysis was a major contributing factor, in Japan it was Shoma Morita who contributed to this change by questioning the somatic basis of conditions then diagnosed as neurasthenia and by developing the conceptshinkeishitsu in the early 1920's, rejecting the concept of neurasthenia. In his theory, the development of shinkeishitsu symptoms is explained in terms of certain psychic dispositions and as a vicious cycle of sensation and attention; he formulated a psychological treatment, Morita therapy, which has been very effective for that condition. With the advent of modernization in this country, doubts have been raised whether this form of psychotherapy with continue to be acceptable to modern Japanese. However, in reality many neurotic patients are still being treated with Morita therapy, although analytically oriented psychotherapy is coming to be practiced more and more in recent years. The indigenous psychotherapies represented by Morita therapy and Naikan therapy have deep-seated roots in Buddhist tradition: its values and ideas have been redefined and reformulated into forms of therapy acceptable to modern Japanese.This paper was translated by Ryu Suzuki.  相似文献

It invites all who are interested in the research of nature to understand and support its aim for the conservation of wild Japanese monkeys and the protection of nature from artificial destruction.
