Mother-lamb acoustic recognition in sheep: a frequency coding 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Ewes of the domestic sheep ( Ovis aries ) display selective maternal investment by restricting care to their own offspring and rejecting alien young. This trait relies on individual recognition processes between ewes and lambs. Whereas identification at the udder is only olfactory, distance recognition is performed through visual and acoustic cues. We studied the effectiveness and modalities of mutual acoustic recognition between ewes and lambs by spectrographic analysis of their vocal signatures and by playbacks of modified calls in the field. Our results show that ewes and their lambs can recognize each other based solely on their calls. The coding of identity within the vocal signatures, previously unknown in sheep, is similar in lamb and ewe: it uses the mean frequency and the spectral energy distribution of the call, namely the timbre of the call. These results point out a simple signature system in sheep that uses only the frequency domain. This engenders a signal with low information content, as opposed to some highly social birds and mammal species that may integrate information both in the temporal and spectral domains. The simplicity of this system is linked to the roles played by vision and olfaction that corroborate the information brought by the vocal signature. 相似文献

A 51-year-old man developed severe mitral regurgitation 10 years after previous mitral valve repair; the echocardiographic images showed a remarkable eccentric jet toward posterior wall of left atrium associated with a high degree of pulmonary vein retrograde flow. The coronary arteriography pointed out no pathologic lesions but a coronary fistula from the proximal right coronary to the right atrium. The standard approach was avoided, and a right anterolateral minithoracotomy was chosen, providing an excellent view. Under cardiopulmonary bypass and mild hypothermia, the mitral valve was re-repaired, and a new ring was implanted. After aortic cross-clamp release, the right coronary fistula was closed through the right atrium. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged on the fourth postoperative day. In such a high-risk reintervention and concomitant procedure, we think that this different approach may represent a feasible and reliable alternative. 相似文献

Simple reaction times to lateralized visual stimuli were studied in normal subjects while they were carrying out a concomitant task. The concomitant task consisted in the exploration of a visual maze presented in the middle of a screen. Regardless of the hand used, the concomitant task produced a specific lengthening of the responses to stimuli located in the left visual field. It is concluded that the right hemisphere plays a major role in the organization of ocular movements during active exploration of visual environment. 相似文献

Functional state of the human right brain hemisphere was studied during simulation of 4-hour operator's training work with a computer in novel conditions. Participants of the experiments differed in the degree of extraversion and baseline level of cortical activity. The obtained results suggest that the role of the right hemisphere in the process of simulated activity consists in reception and primary processing of information. This hemisphere is not involved in the correction of cortical activation to the optimal level of activity, which is necessary for the efficient performance of a task. 相似文献

The configurational behaviour of flexible helices of right handed B- and left handed Z-types have been analysed using statistical mechanical procedures. The configuration-dependent parameter, most importantly, the persistence length has been computed, using the heminucleotide scheme of treating polynucleotide chains under the approximation that perturbations in the backbone torsions produce sufficient flexibility in these helices. The values of persistence lengths obtained for Z-helices are very much higher than that of B-helices indicating that former is less flexible compared to the latter. These are in accordance with the results obtained recently on B- and Z-forms of poly(dG-dC). (dG-dC) using light scattering studies. Also the persistence lengths of BII-DNA helices characterised by a skew 3'-hemiucleotide (ε-270°), and also when they coexist with B-DNA have been computed and the values lie within the range of experimentally reported values on B-helices. It is argued that the decrease in the persistence length values of B-DNA at higher salt concentration is due to additional small fluctuations in sugar residue torsions induced due to neutralisation of electrostatic repulsions between adjacent phosphates of the nucleotide. The distribution of single cysticerci between cerebral hemispheres was studied in 227 adult cases of calcified and vesicular neurocysticercosis (NC). A rightward lateralization of calcified cysticerci was significant only in women, whereas vesicular cysticerci were equally distributed in both hemispheres. Memorization of sequences of right and left hand movements in right- and left-handers: Vector coding

Using studies of the right and left hemisphere’s specialization for positional and vector coding, we analyzed the errors made by right- and left-handers while reproducing sequences of right and left hand movements in a task that activates vector coding by changing the order of movements in memorized sequences. The task was performed first with one hand (starting) and then with the other (continuing). Both right- and lefthanders were found to use information about previous movements of the starting hand only when the dominant hand was starting. After changing the hand, right-handers used information about previous movements of the continuing hand, while left-handers did not. The results were compared with data from earlier experiments wherein positional coding was activated. The comparison showed that vector coding was predominantly involved in memorizing sequences of movements made by the dominant hand, while positional coding was used in the case of the opposite hand in both right- and left-handers. Patterns of errors after changing the hand differed between right- and left-handers, and the conclusion was made that skills are transferred in different ways in right- and left-handers, depending on the type of coding. 相似文献

Extensive research has demonstrated that several specialized cortical regions respond preferentially to faces. One such region, located in the inferior occipital gyrus, has been dubbed the occipital face area (OFA). The OFA is the first stage in two influential face-processing models, both of which suggest that it constructs an initial representation of a face, but how and when it does so remains unclear. The present study revealed that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) targeted at the right OFA (rOFA) disrupted accurate discrimination of face parts but had no effect on the discrimination of spacing between these parts. rTMS to left OFA had no effect. A matched part and spacing discrimination task that used house stimuli showed no impairment. In a second experiment, rTMS to rOFA replicated the face-part impairment but did not produce the same effect in an adjacent area, the lateral occipital cortex. A third experiment delivered double pulses of TMS separated by 40 ms at six periods after stimulus presentation during face-part discrimination. Accuracy dropped when pulses were delivered at 60 and 100 ms only. These findings indicate that the rOFA processes face-part information at an early stage in the face-processing stream. 相似文献

The establishment of pregnancy in domestic ruminants depends upon the continued secretion of progesterone by the corpora lutea. In non-pregnant cycles the corpora lutea regress between days 12-15 after oestrus in the sheep; this process must be blocked to ensure continued exposure of the uterus to progesterone. This review discusses the evidence that embryonic products are involved in the maintenance of corpus luteum function, the identification of factors which may be responsible for this maintenance and the probable mechanism of action. The discussion centres on the recent identification of a trophoblast interferon which is thought to be the major trophoblastic factor preventing luteolysis in sheep and cattle. 相似文献

A method for the recognition of coding-regions along DNA sequences is described. The method is based on the observation, made in several cases, that nucleotide distribution at the third position of the codon is more biased (less random) than that in the other two positions. It is suggested that since nucleotide distribution at the third position is only weakly influenced by the amino acid distribution in the coded protein, there must be some constraints at the DNA level which bias the nucleotide distribution at the third position. The distinction between DNA-level constraints and protein-level constraints is discussed in the frame of Information Theory, and the analysis of the Mitochondrial gene coding for subunit-1 of the yeast cytochrome oxidase is presented. 相似文献

With the aim of determining whether Iscove's Dulbecco's medium (IMDM) provides a growth advantage in the support of granulopoiesis from cultures of human bone marrow in agar, samples from 20 normal subjects were examined in triplicate after 7, 10 and 14 days in parallel cultures containing IMDM or Dulbecco's medium. From every sample, more granulocyte-macrophage colonies were obtained at each culture interval with IMDM. In particular, the number of colonies with IMDM at 14 days (96 +/- 13 per 2x10(5) bone marrow cells) was almost double that with Dulbecco's medium (50 +/- 10). This increment consisted almost entirely of pure granulocyte colonies (P less than 0.001). No significant change in the proportion of eosinophil colonies was observed. These data indicate that IMDM does provide a growth advantage over Dulbecco's medium in the generation of granulocyte (neutrophil and eosinophil) colonies from agar cultures of normal human bone marrow. 相似文献

Twenty-five pregnant Dorsett ewes were randomly divided into three groups to test if ewes use their vomeronasal organs for offspring recognition during nursing. One group of eight ewes (procaine) were made anosmic by irrigation of the nasal olfactory apparatus with a zinc sulphate procaine solution. The second group of nine ewes (cauterized) had their vomeronasal organs rendered nonfunctional by cauterization of the nasoincisive duct. The third group of eight ewes were the controls. Parturition was synchronized in all ewes with betamethasone on Day 145 of gestation. Maternal responsiveness was tested two separate times with 1- to 2-day-old alien lambs. Each alien lamb trial was conducted 24 h apart. Cauterized ewes allowed alien lambs to suckle and they were unable to distinguish alien lambs from their own lambs, whereas the ewes in both groups with functional vomeronasal organs (procaine and control) violently rejected any alien lamb's attempt to suckle. Thus, female sheep use their vomeronasal organs for neonatal offspring recognition. 相似文献
