Although sociality is common in bats, few studies have investigated individual social behaviour in free-ranging colonies. This study quantifies social interactions among wild female Bechstein's bats (Myotis bechsteinii) belonging to one maternity colony. Our main goal was to analyse allogrooming and nose rubbing, which are both regularly displayed by adult females. Based on data of individually marked bats with known degrees of pairwise relatedness, we suggest that allogrooming has both a social and a hygienic function. Females groomed colony mates mainly on parts of the body that are difficult to reach by a bat itself. Thus, allogrooming may function to remove ectoparasites from inaccessible body parts. Allogrooming was rare compared to self-grooming (on average 0.7% vs 37.7% of a female's total observation time), and there was no significant correlation between the rate at which a bat groomed itself and the frequency with which it was groomed by conspecifics. Therefore, we assume that allogrooming also has a social purpose in addition to its assumed hygienic function. We suggest that allogrooming could strengthen social bonds among colony members that live together for many years. Mothers and adult daughters groomed each other preferentially. Thus, allogrooming may reflect special mother–daughter bonds. Nose rubbing occurred mainly within minutes (median: 80 s) after the arrival of a female in a night roost, and there was no correlation with relatedness. Therefore, it probably allows recognition of colony mates and may also be a greeting behaviour. Communicated by M.E. dos Santos  相似文献

Allogrooming occurs in a wide range of species and can serve both hygienic and social functions. While the latter have long been thought to be underpinned by reductions in tension for recipients, recent work has suggested that donors may also benefit in this way. Here, I show that, in cooperatively breeding green woodhoopoes Phoeniculus purpureus, involvement in allogrooming is followed by a reduction in self-grooming by both recipients and donors, but that the former exhibit a greater decrease. Moreover, I demonstrate for the first time that the dominance status of the allogrooming participant is important, with subordinate group members reducing subsequent self-grooming to a greater extent than the dominant pair. If avian self-directed behaviour reflects current distress levels in the same way as found in various primates, my results would indicate that allogrooming benefits are not confined to mammals, and would have important implications both for accurate assessments of the true costs and benefits of affiliative behaviour and for our understanding of the evolution of sociality.  相似文献

Seasonal and diurnal variations in tonic pain reactions were examined in female and male CBA/J mice maintained in a 12/12 dark/light cycle, at controlled temperature and humidity conditions. Animals were injected into the dorsum of one hindpaw with a dilute (20 microl, 1%) formalin solution. Pain-related behaviors were quantified as the time spent licking the injected paw and the number of flinching episodes. The experiments were performed during the first part of the light phase (Light: from 7 to 10 a.m.) or during the first part of the dark phase of the diurnal cycle (Dark: from 7 to 10 p.m.), in two different periods of the year: Spring (March-June) and Winter (November-January). Considering all data, females showed a slightly enhanced licking response, as well as an increase in the time spent in self-grooming, in comparison with males. In Spring, the licking and flinching responses were higher during the Dark phase than during the Light phase. This held for both sexes and for both phases of the behavioral response to formalin injection. By contrast, no significant diurnal variation in pain reactions was found in Winter. These seasonal and diurnal differences were not due to nonspecific changes in motor behavior, inasmuch as locomotor activity and self-grooming showed a different pattern: during the second phase after formalin, self-grooming was higher in the Light period in the experiments performed in Spring, whereas locomotor activity showed no significant seasonal changes. These results show that the behavioral reactions to prolonged noxious input, integrated both at spinal and supraspinal sites, undergo similar seasonal and diurnal variations in both sexes, strengthening the importance of chronobiological factors in the modulation of nociception.  相似文献

This paper reports a study designed to test the hypothesis that a relationship exists among dominance rank, tension, and scratch behaviors in anubis baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis). Our study was conducted on two groups of male baboons, each containing eight unrelated individuals who were approximately 6 years of age and who shared common rearing histories. Focal animal sampling was used to collect behavioral data. Hand scratching, foot scratching, avoid, tension, allogrooming, autogrooming, and manipulation were measured as acts performed per hour of sampling. Dominance matrices were constructed based on net difference of avoid behavior performed and received (adjusted for time sampled). Individual status ranks were grouped into two status classes, high and low. Analysis of variance models demonstrated significant differences in the performance rate of scratching behaviors by dominance rank class, as well as differences in scratching performance by tension class. Individuals in the high status class had significantly higher rates of total scratching, hand scratching, foot scratching, and tension behavior performance than their counterparts in the low status class. No significant difference was found between status classes or tension classes for performance rate of allogrooming, autogrooming, or manipulation behavior. The frequency of scratching and general level of activity were not significantly correlated. The results are interpreted to indicate the possibility that scratching may function as a displacement behavior, which subjectively appears to communicate heightened frustration, anxiety, or arousal.  相似文献

During a four-month study of wild white-handed gibbons in Thailand one group was observed for 131 hr. The individuals spent 5.2% of their activity period allogrooming. Several body sites received more respectively less allogrooming than expected. Surface areas easy to clean by autogrooming such as the belly received significantly less allogrooming than expected. Upper body areas which are likely to be infested by parasites and other matter received significantly more allogrooming than lower body parts. Thus, grooming in gibbons seems to reflect a primarily hygienic function.  相似文献

Many hypotheses have been put forth to account for differences in the amount of time that animals engage self-grooming when exposed to conspecifics or their odors, but most ignore the possibility that self-grooming may be associated with olfactory communication between groomers and conspecifics. As yet, we do not know the function of self-grooming and why animals do so when they encounter the odors of conspecifics. The present experiment tests the hypothesis that the amount of time that a meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus, self-grooms is affected by the reproductive state of the odor donor and its own reproductive state. The findings support the hypothesis. Male voles spent more time self-grooming when they were exposed to bedding scented by female voles in postpartum estrus (PPE) compared to that of female voles in other reproductive states and female mice. PPE female voles spent more time self-grooming when they were exposed to bedding scented by testosterone-treated male voles than either to that of gonadectomized male voles and male mice. PPE female voles spent more time than OVX+E and more time than OVX females self-grooming when they were exposed to bedding scented by testosterone-treated male voles. GX+T male voles spent more time than GX male voles self-grooming when they were exposed to bedding scented by PPE female voles. The results suggest that individuals self-groom more in the presence of an odor of a highly receptive potential mate than that of a less receptive mate.  相似文献

To prevent epidemics, insect societies have evolved collective disease defences that are highly effective at curing exposed individuals and limiting disease transmission to healthy group members. Grooming is an important sanitary behaviour—either performed towards oneself (self-grooming) or towards others (allogrooming)—to remove infectious agents from the body surface of exposed individuals, but at the risk of disease contraction by the groomer. We use garden ants (Lasius neglectus) and the fungal pathogen Metarhizium as a model system to study how pathogen presence affects self-grooming and allogrooming between exposed and healthy individuals. We develop an epidemiological SIS model to explore how experimentally observed grooming patterns affect disease spread within the colony, thereby providing a direct link between the expression and direction of sanitary behaviours, and their effects on colony-level epidemiology. We find that fungus-exposed ants increase self-grooming, while simultaneously decreasing allogrooming. This behavioural modulation seems universally adaptive and is predicted to contain disease spread in a great variety of host–pathogen systems. In contrast, allogrooming directed towards pathogen-exposed individuals might both increase and decrease disease risk. Our model reveals that the effect of allogrooming depends on the balance between pathogen infectiousness and efficiency of social host defences, which are likely to vary across host–pathogen systems.  相似文献

We examined thermoregulatory behaviors in a wild population of white-faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus) inhabiting a highly seasonal dry forest in Santa Rosa National Park (SRNP), Costa Rica. The dry season in SRNP lasts approximately 5 months and is characterized by high ambient temperatures regularly exceeding 37 degrees C, low relative humidity, and the near absence of precipitation. This study demonstrates that capuchins rest more and travel shorter distances during the hottest and driest hours of the day, and suggests that they extend their tongues to lower body temperature via evaporative cooling. Seasonal weather patterns and group movement data reported here are based on 940 h of observations on three social groups of capuchins (wet season: 370 h, dry season: 570 h). In the dry season, the proportion of time spent resting increased at higher temperatures whereas the proportion of time spent traveling decreased. Distance traveled between location points taken at half-hour intervals decreased significantly as temperature increased, although the correlation was not strong. Capuchins exposed their tongues during hot, dry, windy conditions, and this behavior was much more frequent in the dry season. Temperature was significantly higher and humidity significantly lower for "tongue-out" events than expected for a random event in the dry season. Finally, as surface water became scarce, home-range areas of heavy use became increasingly centered on the remaining permanent water sources. These results suggest that heat stress and water scarcity are significant influences on the behavior of capuchins in hot, dry conditions.

To test the hygienic functional hypothesis of allogrooming in the white-crowned mangabey (Cercocebus torquatus lunulatus), we analyzed the distribution of such behavior over the body surface in the individuals of two captive groups of this species (N = 9 and N = 8). To sample the data, we used focal animal sampling and continuous recording. Before analyzing the data, we measured a representative subject in order to calculate the body surface area occupied by each site, defined accessibility rigorously (distinguishing among three categories of sites: easy to reach, difficult to reach, and inaccessible), and tested empirically the classification proposed. To determine whether allogrooming was likely to concentrate on the body sites with accessibility problems, we ran three successive analyses, each of with was increasingly specific: grouping types of sites, analyzing each site separately, and analyzing each subject's reception profile. The results obtained show that in both groups inaccessible sites received more allogrooming than predicted by their actual surface area; sites that were difficult to reach received an amount of allogrooming proportional to the body surface area they occupied, and those easy to reach received less allogrooming than expected. This complementarity between the distribution of auto- and allogrooming is consistent with the hygienic functional hypothesis of allogrooming. However, not all inaccessible sides nor those difficult-to-reach were allogroomed equally: Allogrooming concentrated primarily on dorsal and caudal regions, whose care is incompatible with a ventral/ventral orientation between groomer and groomee. The strong distributional selectivity of allogrooming and the interindividual variability in preferred allogrooming sites suggest that the hygienic functional hypothesis cannot fully account for all the aspects of the corporal distribution of such behavior. Thus, in support of the multifunctional nature of allogrooming, we conclude that there must be more than cleaning involved in Cercocebus torquatus lunulatus' allogrooming.  相似文献

This study was aimed at evaluating diurnal and climatic influences on allogrooming in a small captive group of Java monkeys (Macaca fuscicularis). Allogrooming showed a definite diurnal cycle similar to those preeviously reported for other Macaca species. The major amount of allogrooming was recorded between 1300 hours and 1500 hours with a second minor peak occurring between 1100 hours and 1200 hours. The lowest mean levels were recorded in the early morning and in the late afternoon. Climatic factors were shown to influence allogrooming: more allogrooming was done under conditions of high temperature and low relative humidity. On the basis of the discrepancy between this latter finding and that previously reported for Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) living under similar conditions, it is suggested that the sensitivity of Java monkeys to climatic factors may be a species-specific trait.  相似文献

The hygienic functional hypothesis of allogrooming behavior was examined in two captive groups (N=9 andN=8) of white-crowned mangabeys (Cercocebus torquatus lunulatus) by analyzing: (1) the corporal distribution of manipulation type according to hair density, and (2) the corporal distribution of allogrooming according to presence of wounds. In both groups the sites with higher hair density received more bouts of Superficial Grooming, which implies a tactile screening of a fragment of the body surface. Only one group tended to emit more allogrooming on the body sites when they were wounded. In the other group, however, the number of wounds was very small and the wounds concentrated predominantly on those sites which were accessible to the subject itself. Thus, our results may be consistent with the hygienic functional hypothesis of allogrooming behavior in general and with the sanitary one in particular.

Some causal relationships between allogrooming, autogrooming, locomotion and close proximity in the behavior of one (adult female) Macaca arctoides while in the presence of another (adult male) monkey of the same species are reported. Allogrooming reduces the probability of walking away in the groomer, and thus increases the time spent close to the other monkey; autogrooming seems to have a similar effect. The duration of autogrooming is increased in a non-proportional manner by reduction of locomotion, but the duration of autogrooming seems to directly reduce the amount of locomotion. Up to a certain optimal value, the duration of autogrooming increases accordingly as the time spent close to the other monkey increases. The duration of allogrooming may be influenced in the same way as the duration of autogrooming.  相似文献

Functional Implications of Allogrooming in Cercocebus torquatus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We examined the hygienic functional hypothesis of allogrooming in two captive groups (N = 9 and N = 8) of white-crowned mangabeys (Cercocebus torquatus lunulatus) by analyzing the corporeal distribution of allogrooming solicitations according to the variable degree of accessibility of the various body sites. We used focal-animal sampling and continuous recording and nonparametric statistics (sing test and 2). The fact that in both groups more allogrooming was solicited to sites associated with accessibility problems is consistent with the hygienic functional hypothesis of allogrooming. In any case, there are two facts that suggest that this hypothesis cannot account for all the characteristics of such behavior: 1) the strong distributional selectivity shown by allogrooming solicitations—they concentrated primarily on dorsal and caudal regions instead of those difficult to reach or inaccessible on the whole—and 2) the significant role played by sex in the intragroup distribution of anogenital solicitations. Supporting the multifunctional nature of allogrooming, we find very appealing the ritualization hypothesis, according to which the allogrooming performed on certain body sites would have acquired a sociocommunicative meaning.  相似文献

Data on scratching behavior were collected from a group of rhesus monkeys living in spacious surroundings. Juveniles scratched more often than adults. Adults scratched most often in social contexts and in close temporal association with a change of behavior. Subjects of intermediate dominance rank, in particular, scratched around the time of a behavioral change, and these subjects were the only ones to show increased scratching during tests involving restricted access to food (thwarting or frustration). The outer thighs, lower back, and sides were the sites scratched most frequently, not necessarily matching sites reported to be preferred for self-grooming. Scratching in monkeys has certain characteristics in common with some well-studied displacement activities in other species, and it possibly also serves as a signal that the individual is preparing to change behavior.  相似文献

To assess what female Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) gain from allowing others to care for their infants, we collected behavioral data on 12 mother-infant dyads at Zhouzhi National Nature Reserve in the Qinling Mountains, China. Mothers’ feeding time significantly increased when infants were cared for by other group members versus when they were cared for by the mothers themselves. The time mothers spent autogrooming and receiving grooming also increased when they were temporarily relieved of maternal duties; however, mothers did not groom other individuals more when they were not encumbered by infants. There are several benefits that mothers gain from having helpers care for their infants: They gain more time to feed and thus increase their feeding efficiency. Mothers have more time to engage in hygienic and maintenance activities because they autogroom and receive allogrooming more. Lastly, mothers save energy when their infants are with helpers. Wild Sichuan snub-nosed monkey mothers meet their basic survival and maintenance needs because of helping behavior.  相似文献

It is well established that allogrooming, which evolved for a hygienic function, has acquired an important derived social function in many primates. In particular, it has been postulated that grooming may play an essential role in group cohesion and that human language, as verbal grooming or gossip, evolved to maintain group cohesion in the hominin lineage with its unusually large group sizes. Here, we examine this group cohesion hypothesis and test it against the alternative grooming-need hypothesis which posits that rates of grooming are higher in species where grooming need (i.e. the motivation to groom for hygiene and its associated psychological reward) is more pronounced. This alternative predicts that the derived social function of grooming evolved mostly in those lineages that had the highest exposure to ectoparasites and dirt, i.e. terrestrial species. A detailed comparative analysis of 74 species of wild primates, controlling for phylogenetic non-independence, showed that terrestriality was a highly significant predictor of allogrooming time, consistent with the prediction. The predictions of the group cohesion hypothesis were not supported, however. Group size did not predict grooming time across primates, nor did it do so in separate intra-population analyses in 17 species. Thus, there is no comparative support for the group-cohesion function of allogrooming, which questions the role of grooming in the evolution of human language.  相似文献

1. Little is known about interactions between environmental conditions surrounding insects and their immune responses. 2. The environment in and around termite colonies, including temperature, relative humidity, soil pH, and light was analysed using principal components analysis (PCA). 3. The relationship between these abiotic parameters and two aspects of termite immunity (phenoloxidase activity and lipid content) was examined in field‐caught workers of Nasutitermes acajutlae Holmgren. Finally, termites from warm/dry and cool/moist habitats were exposed to Metarhizium anisopliae to determine their susceptibility to mycosis. 4. PCA indicated that environmental components external to the nest [ambient temperature, ambient relative humidity (RH), soil temperature and light] comprised the majority (PC1 = 37.5%) of variation. Internal variables (nest temperature and RH) and nest volume accounted for 19.6% (PC2) of the variation with pH comprising 12.9% (PC3). 5. AIC and regression models suggested that ambient temperature was most strongly and positively associated with immune variables and that relative humidity may also play a role. Termites from warm/dry colonies were less susceptible to M. anisopliae than termites from cool/moist colonies. 6. Thus, termites nesting in warmer habitats may exhibit increased immune‐related measures and reduced susceptibility to mycosis compared with termites from cooler habitats.  相似文献

The tensile properties of the outermost layer of skin of neonatal rats, the stratum corneum, were investigated at a constant strain rate as a function of moisture content and ambient test temperature. The results show that the mechanical behavior of this membrane, whose primary constituent is the fibrous protein keratin, can be significantly altered by variations in both the sorbed water content and ambient temperature. In particular, a brittle to ductile transition was observed at 25°C once the hydration level exceeded 70% relative humidity. Similarly, an identical phenomenon moisture concentrations were maintained at 10 g H2O/100 g dry protein. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements showed the presence of a molecular relaxation process which migrated from 42°C at 40% relative humidity to −18°C at 95% relative humidity. It is postulated that this relaxation process, possibly corresponding to the glass transition of the fibrous protein component of stratum corneum, is primarily respnsible for the observed behavior.  相似文献
