Two non-lactating, non-gravid female bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus , (SLA, age 32 yr and TOD, age 34 yr) began lactating within one week after being housed with a 6.5- and 6.75-month-old orphaned calf, respectively. Cooperative swimming and nursing behaviors were quickly evident in both cow/ calf pairs. During the first 2.5 mo a milk substitute, eventually in combination with some whole fish, was used to supplement nursing in both calves. After this initial period, supplemental feeding was discontinued. SLA then became her adopted calf s sole source of nutrition for the next 5 mo, followed by another 6 mo during which the calf shifted to a predominantly fish diet with occasional nursing. TOD's orphan also continued to nurse beyond the 2.5-mo supplementation period and began voluntarily accepting small quantities of fish, suckling continued over the next year while fish consumption increased. Using a modified human breast pump, trainers collected milk at intervals from the adult dolphins throughout the lactation period. The first milk collected from TOD (day 8 after housing with calf) and SLA (day 12 with her calf) contained 6.0% and 10.3% fat, respectively. On day 68 TOD's milk fat had increased to 23.5%, and on day 37 that of SLA measured 22.5%. These later values are similar to those reported for normally lactating bottlenose dolphins. 相似文献

Nitrogen (N), the most important mineral nutrient for plants, is critical to agricultural production systems. N deficiency severely affects rice growth and decreases rice yields. However, excessive use of N fertilizer has caused severe pollution to agricultural and ecological environments. The necessity of breeding of crops that require lower input of N fertilizer has been recognized. Here we identified a major quantitative trait locus on chromosome 12, Tolerance Of Nitrogen Deficiency 1 (TOND1), that confers tolerance to N deficiency in the indica cultivar Teqing. Sequence verification of 75 indica and 75 japonica cultivars from 18 countries and regions demonstrated that only 27.3% of cultivars (41 indica cultivars) contain TOND1, whereas 72.7% of cultivars, including the remaining 34 indica cultivars and all 75 japonica cultivars, do not harbor the TOND1 allele. Over‐expression of TOND1 increased the tolerance to N deficiency in the TOND1‐deficient rice cultivars. The identification of TOND1 provides a molecular basis for breeding rice varieties with improved grain yield despite decreased input of N fertilizers. 相似文献

Time-depth recorders sample information about the three- dimensional behavior of diving animals over time and reduce this into just two dimensions, depth and time. Even so, interpretation of the data may still be difficult because of the volume of data and the detail that remains. Comparison of dive "shape" across individuals, geographical locations, or species presents problems because its analysis may involve subjective judgments or arbitrary distinctions. More constraints may be imposed if a telemetry system is used to transmit the data. Here we present two approaches for dive data compression and analysis. The first (applied before storage and transmission) selects the most important time-depth points in a profile where depth Vs. time trajectories change most significantly. The second (used to either preprocess or postprocess dive information) creates a dimensionless, depth, and duration independent index (TAD), which encapsulates the relevant information from dive profiles on where the diver centers its activity with respect to depth during a dive. Its use facilitates comparison across dives performed at different times or places, within or between individuals or species, irrespective of the duration and depth of their dives. Both can be used to reduce the amount of information sent or stored about dive behavior and can facilitate dive analysis. 相似文献

利用“微卫星”标记对油松(Pinus tabulaeformis)种子园控制授粉和自由授粉的子代进行了父本分析, 探讨自由授粉状态下种子园子代遗传组成与花粉传播的关系, 以及人工控制授粉状态下花粉形态等指标与子代遗传组成的相关性。其中,利用SSR对281粒油松种子进行父本分析, 在80%的置信水平下确定了其中126粒种子的花粉来源; 对2株母树自由授粉种子的父本分析表明, 种子园内花粉传播距离最大为85 m, 有效距离在30 m以内; 对11#和24#母树分别用21个无性系的等体积混合花粉进行控制授粉发现, 子代由少数无性系的花粉受精产生, 其中 50#、7#、25#、33#无性系对2株母树子代的花粉贡献率分别达到50.62%和61.54%; 花粉粒大小、花粉等体积重和花粉活力与选择性受精相关不显著, 而花粉活力偏低的无性系也有授粉成功的可能性。 相似文献
