Sequence data of mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and nuclear ITS2 region were used to assess genetic diversity, intraspecific phylogeography and population genetic structure of the oak gall wasp Andricus chodjaii from Turkey. We examined 293 individuals from 21 localities which generated 57 cyt b haplotypes and 8 ITS2 alleles. The average genetic diversity was 0.575 for cyt b and 0.202 ITS2, and the average nucleotide diversity 0.015 for cyt b gene and 0.001 for the ITS2 region. Phylogenetic analyses of cyt b haplotypes produced mostly similar topologies with geographically significant groupings. The ITS2 data provided less resolution without robust and apparent geographic structure. Population demographic analysis indicated that some eastern populations expanded, however, some others underwent either expansion or decline resulting in genetically structured populations. Molecular clock applied to the mtDNA data indicated that ingroup haplotypes diversified from the outgroup haplotypes around Early Pliocene. Further diversification events throughout Pleistocene resulted in major clade formations. It appears that geographic formations and glacial and interglacial cycles of Pleistocene were crucial for shaping the phylogeographic structure of A. chodjaii in Turkey.  相似文献

Most phylogeographic studies examine organisms that do not have transcontinental distributions and therefore the genetic and temporal effects of barriers across an entire continent cannot be assessed with respect to a single species. We examined the phylogeographic structure, lineage age, and historical demography using sequences from the mtDNA cytochrome b gene of the widespread North American racer (Coluber constrictor), one of the few abundant transcontinental snakes that occurs throughout many diverse biomes. Our results indicate that this complex is comprised of six lineages differing greatly in geographic extent, with the largest (a central US clade) being approximately 26 times greater than the smallest (a lineage restricted to the Florida Panhandle and nearby portions of adjacent States). Most of the six lineages appear to be separated at previously identified genetic barriers for several vertebrates with similar ranges. Lineage diversification in this species began in the late Miocene, separating populations in the Florida Peninsula from the remainder of the US. Diversification of lineages continued throughout the Pliocene and early Pleistocene. Four of the six lineages occur east of the Mississippi River, with only two distinctly young ( approximately 1.5 mya) lineages found west of the Mississippi River (one occurs west of Continental Divide). All methods of demographic inference, including the mismatch distribution, Fu and Li's D and Tajima's D , and Bayesian skyline plots revealed population expansion occurring in the mid-to-late Pleistocene for every lineage, regardless of size or proximity to formerly glaciated areas. Population expansion for lineages found east of the Mississippi River occurred earlier and was much greater than those found west of the River.  相似文献

The biogeography of Central America is viewed as a classic case study in understanding the impact of vicariant events on patterns of biotic dispersal. While many biogeographers have focused on community composition and geographical limits of species at broad scales across Central America, much less work has focused on post-colonization diversification patterns at finer scales. The livebearing freshwater fish Xenophallus umbratilis presents an ideal system for determining the impact of recent Earth history events on biodiversity in northern Costa Rica. Here, we test the hypotheses that marine inundation of the San Carlos and northern Limón basins during the Pliocene and Pleistocene has caused genetic fragmentation among X. umbratilis populations, despite contemporary freshwater connections. To test this idea, we collected mitochondrial (cytochrome b ) sequence data in 162 individuals taken from 27 localities across northern Costa Rica. We employed a variety of analytical approaches, including: maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood, analysis of molecular variance, and demographic analysis of population size through time. We found four major clades within X. umbratilis , each geographically isolated with no shared haplotypes across drainages. Oddly, clades that occupy adjacent drainages are not always sister taxa in the phylogeny, suggesting that colonization in this species is more complex than a simple model of isolation by distance. All our results are consistent with the hypothesis that changes in sea level associated with glacial eustatic cycles have had an important effect in shaping diversification patterns in this species.  相似文献

The geographic pattern of mtDNA variation in lemmings from 13 localities throughout the Eurasian Arctic was studied by using eight restriction enzymes and sequencing of the cytochrome b region. These data are used to reveal the vicariant history of Lemmus , and to examine the effect of the last glaciation on mtDNA variation by comparing diversity in formerly glaciated areas to the diversity in non-glaciated areas. Phylogenetic congruence across different Arctic taxa and association between observed discontinuities, and probable Pleistocene barriers, suggest that glacial-interglacial periods were crucial in the vicariant history of Lemmus. Differences in amount of divergence (2.1–9.1%) across different historical barriers indicate chronologically separate vicariant events during the Quaternary. Populations from a formerly glaciated area are no less variable than those in the non-glaciated area. Regardless of glaciation history, no population structure and high haplotype diversity were found within geographic regions. The lack of population structure indicates that populations with high ancestral haplotype diversity shifted their distribution during the Holocene, and that lemmings tracked a changing environment during the Quaternary without reduction of effective population size.  相似文献

This study extended the geographic coverage of a previous study to explore population genetic structure and demographic history in the Ariake icefish Salanx ariakensis from three populations of continental coastlines and one island population in the north-western Pacific based on a partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. The S. ariakensis showed high genetic diversity and strong genetic structure. Phylogenetic analysis showed a shallow gene tree with no clear phylogeographical structure. Contiguous range expansion and restricted gene flow were inferred to be main population events by nested-clade analysis. Significant genetic differentiations between populations could be attributable to negligible gene flow by coalescent analysis. High nucleotide diversity of each population was due to geographic mixing of heterogenous haplotypes during lowering sea levels of the Pleistocene. These findings indicate that cycles of geographic isolation and secondary contact happened in the Pleistocene glacial–interglacial cycles shaping genetic structure and population demography of S. ariakensis .  相似文献

Climatic oscillations throughout the Pleistocene combined with geological and topographic complexity resulted in extreme habitat heterogeneity along the Atlantic coast of Brazil. Inferring how these historic landscape patterns have structured the current diversity of the region's biota is important both for our understanding of the factors promoting diversification, as well as the conservation of this biodiversity hotspot. Here we evaluate potential historical scenarios of diversification in the Atlantic Coastal Forest of Brazil by investigating the population genetic structure of a frog endemic to the region. Using mitochondrial and nuclear sequences, we generated a Bayesian population-level phylogeny of the Thoropa miliaris species complex. We found deep genetic divergences among five geographically distinct clades. Southern clades were monophyletic and nested within paraphyletic northern clades. Analyses of historical demographic patterns suggest an overall north to south population expansion, likely associated with regional differences in habitat stability during the Pliocene and early Pleistocene. However, genetic structure among southern populations is less pronounced and likely represents more recent vicariant events resulting from Holocenic sea-level oscillations. Our analyses corroborate that the Atlantic Coastal Forest has been a biogeographically dynamic landscape and suggest that the high diversity of its fauna and flora resulted from a combination of climatic and geologic events from the Pliocene to the present.  相似文献

In order to assess the utility of nested clade analysis, both standard phylogenetic algorithms and nested clade analysis were performed on a geographically widespread survey of mitochondrial DNA haplotypes of the bamboo viper, Trimeresurus stejnegeri, within Taiwan. Gross tree topologies were congruent for all analyses and indicated the presence of two geographically overlapping clades within Taiwan. The smaller lineage was restricted to the north and east coasts, whereas the larger lineage occupied all but the northern range of the species within Taiwan including the Pacific offshore populations of Green and Orchid Islands. The phylogeographical pattern supports the existence of at least one colonization event from the continent since the initial isolation of Taiwan from the mainland in the Pliocene. However, determining the exact number of colonization events was not possible due to the simultaneous vicariant forces of hypothesized continental landbridge connections and the occurrence of dramatic in situ orogenesis throughout the Pleistocene. Nested clade analysis provided multiple temporal and spatial population historical inferences that are not possible with standard analyses and therefore should become widely applied to future phylogeographical studies.  相似文献

We investigated a major geographic break in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplotypes in deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, by analysing spatial variation in a 491‐bp fragment of the mtDNA control region from 455 samples distributed across a north–south transect of 2000 km in Western North America. To determine whether the mtDNA break was reflected in the nuclear genome, we then compared spatial variation in 13 nuclear microsatellites of 95 individuals surrounding the mtDNA break. Using a canonical correlation analysis we found that nuclear genomic variation was not correlated with mtDNA differentiation. The contrasting patterns of variation in mtDNA and nuclear DNA are consistent with a hypothesis of historic genetic drift that occurred in isolated refugia combined with recent gene flow between the formerly isolated refugial populations. A Mantel test of genetic vs. geographic distance revealed that recent gene flow between deer mouse populations has been high. We conclude that past vicariant events associated with Pleistocene climate changes together with recent gene flow have created the observed intra‐specific cytonuclear discordance in Western North America.  相似文献

An analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequence variation in 172 three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) sampled across the European distribution range revealed three major evolutionary lineages occupying relatively large and separate geographic areas. The trans-Atlantic lineage comprised of populations spanning from the East Coast of USA to the continental Europe and was basal group to the other European lineages in the phylogeny. The European lineage included populations located in the Western and Eastern Europe, British Isles, Scandinavia as well as some parts of the Mediterranean region. The third lineage was specific to the Black Sea drainages. The within lineage structure was characterized by significant excess of low frequency haplotypes and star-like mtDNA genealogies, which suggest a recent population expansions to the formerly glaciated marine and freshwater environments. A coalescent-based method dated the splits between the major lineages to have occurred during the Saalian and Weichselian glaciations in the late Pleistocene, depending on the molecular clock calibration. The coalescent simulations further indicate high degree of genetic diversity within the lineages and a substantial increase in the genetic diversity in the European lineage relative to the ancestral level. In addition to the three major lineages, the freshwater populations in R. Neretva and L. Skadar in the Adriatic Sea coast region harboured unique and highly divergent haplotypes suggesting long independent histories of these populations. Evidence from mtDNA analyses suggests that these populations deserve a status of an evolutionary significant unit.  相似文献

The mitten crab, Eriocheir sensu stricto , is economically important in East Asia, although it is an invasive species in Europe and North America. Little is known about its population structure and historical demography in its native range, especially along the Pacific coast of China. We collected mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit II and cytochrome  b sequences from 154 individuals distributed in the rivers along the Chinese coast and 15 individuals from Japan. Phylogenetic analysis resulted in three major monophyletic groups: northern China, southern China and Japan. Negligible migration was detected among those groups by coalescent analysis. Hence, we support the recognition of three species: Eriocheir hepuensis in southern China, Eriocheir sinensis in northern China and Eriocheir japonica in Japan. The populations in the middle (the Oujiang and Minjiang Rivers) possess a mixture of haplotypes similar to either the northern or the southern haplotypes. We believe that secondary intergradation as the most likely cause of the clinal variation based on examining the genetic variation in the latitudinal space. The estimated divergence time between E. sinensis and E. hepuensis is 2.24 million years ago (Ma), while the divergence time between E. japonica and E. sinensis is 1.83 Ma. Both are in the late Pliocene, suggesting that land bridges associated with low sea level during that time might have severed as vicariant barriers for speciation. The divergence of the northern population and the 'northern haplotypes' in the middle population was estimated at 0.12 Ma, while the time separating the southern population and the 'southern haplotypes' in the middle populations was estimated as 0.16 Ma, implicating possible secondary contact in the late Pleistocene.  相似文献

Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was used to examine the genetic structure among field voles (Microtus agrestis) from southern and central Sweden. A total of 57 haplotypes was identified in 158 voles from 60 localities. Overall mtDNA diversity was high, but both haplotype and nucleotide diversity exhibited pronounced geographic heterogeneity. Phylogenetic analyses revealed a shallow tree with seven primary mtDNA lineages separated by sequence divergences ranging from 0.6% to 1.0%. The geographic structure of mtDNA diversity and lineage distribution was complex but strongly structured and deviated significantly from an equilibrium situation. The extensive mtDNA diversity observed and the recent biogeographic history of the region suggests that the shallow mtDNA structure in the field vole cannot be explained solely by stochastic lineage sorting in situ or isolation by distance. Instead, the data suggest that the genetic imprints of historical demographic conditions and vicariant geographic events have been preserved and to a large extent determine the contemporary geographic distribution of mtDNA variation. A plausible historical scenario involves differentiation of mtDNA lineages in local populations in glacial refugia, a moving postglacial population structure, and bottlenecks and expansions of mtDNA lineages during the postglacial recolonization of Sweden. By combining the mtDNA data with an analysis of Y-chromosome variation, a specific population unit was identified in southwestern Sweden. This population, defined by a unique mtDNA lineage and fixation of a Y-chromosome variant, probably originated in a population bottleneck in southern Sweden about 12,000 to 13,000 calendar years ago.  相似文献

Evolution after the flood: phylogeography of the desert fish Utah Chub   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Bonneville Basin and upper Snake River drainage of western North America underwent extensive hydrological changes during the late Pleistocene, potentially influencing the geographic distribution and evolutionary trajectories of aquatic species that occupied this region. To test this hypothesis, I reconstructed the phylogeographic history of the desert fish Utah chub (Gila atraria) by examining 16 populations that span the natural distribution of this species across the Bonneville Basin and upper Snake River. I compared mitochondrial control region sequences (934 bp) among 77 individuals revealing 24 unique haplotypes. Geographic and phylogenetic relationships among haplotypes were explored using parsimony, maximum likelihood, nested clade analysis, and analysis of molecular variance. I found that G. atraria is composed of two distinct clades that represent an early Pleistocene split between the upper Snake River and Bonneville Basin. Within each of these clades, geographic structuring was highly concordant with the hydrological history of late Pleistocene Lake Bonneville and the upper Snake River, suggesting that glacial-induced shifts in climate and unpredictable geological events have played a major role in shaping genetic subdivision among populations. To examine the effects of vicariant events on phenotypic divergence among Utah chub populations, I mapped chub life histories to the control region haplotype network. I found a nonrandom association between haplotypes and life-history phenotypes. These results suggest that historical events responsible for population fragmentation may have also contributed to phenotypic shifts in life histories, both indirectly by limiting gene flow among populations and directly by altering the selective environments where populations persisted.  相似文献

The pink dolphin (Inia geoffrensis) is widely distributed along the Amazon and Orinoco basins, covering an area of approximately 7 million km2. Previous morphological and genetic studies have proposed the existence of at least two evolutionary significant units: one distributed across the Orinoco and Amazon basins and another confined to the Bolivian Amazon. The presence of barriers in the riverine environment has been suggested to play a significant role in shaping present‐day patterns of ecological and genetic structure for this species. In the present study, we examined the phylogeographic structure, lineage divergence time and historical demography using mitochondrial (mt)DNA sequences in different pink dolphin populations distributed in large and small spatial scales, including two neighbouring Brazilian Amazon populations. mtDNA control region (CR) analysis revealed that the Brazilian haplotypes occupy an intermediate position compared to three previously studied geographic locations: the Colombian Amazon, the Colombian Orinoco, and the Bolivian Amazon. On a local scale, we have identified a pattern of maternal isolation between two neighbouring populations from Brazil. Six mtDNA CR haplotypes were identified in Brazil with no sharing between the two populations, as well as specific cytochrome b (cyt b) haplotypes identified in each locality. In addition, we analyzed autosomal microsatellites to investigate male‐mediated gene flow and demographic changes within the study area in Brazil. Data analysis of 14 microsatellite loci failed to detect significant population subdivision, suggesting that male‐mediated gene flow may maintain homogeneity between these two locations. Moreover, both mtDNA and microsatellite data indicate a major demographic collapse within Brazil in the late Pleistocene. Bayesian skyline plots (BSP) of mtDNA data revealed a stable population for Colombian and Brazilian Amazon lineages through time, whereas a population decline was demonstrated in the Colombian Orinoco lineage. Moreover, BSP and Tajima's D and Fu's Fs tests revealed a recent population expansion exclusively in the Bolivian sample. Finally, we estimated that the diversification of the Inia sp. lineage began in the Late Pliocene (approximately 3.1 Mya) and continued throughout the Pleistocene. Published 2011. The Pleistocene was characterized by climatic changes that greatly altered the distribution of organisms. Population extinctions, bottlenecks, isolation, range expansions and contractions were often associated with glaciations, leaving signatures in the spatial patterns of genetic diversity across species. Lissotriton helveticus belongs to a Pan-European lineage of newts that were strongly affected by glaciations and represent an excellent model to analyse the effect of generalized climatic changes in phylogeographic patterns. We studied the genetic diversity of the species using data from two mitochondrial and three nuclear genes analyzed in a Bayesian phylogenetic framework to investigate the historical processes shaping spatial patterns of genetic diversity. Mitochondrial haplotypes cluster in four different groups present in the Iberian Peninsula and of Pleistocene origin, probably by allopatric fragmentation. Nuclear genes present no obvious geographic structure patterns, suggesting gene flow and generalized incomplete lineage sorting. Populations north of the Pyrenees are closely related to those from northeastern Iberia, suggesting recent range expansion from this region. Historical demographic analyses indicate a demographic expansion starting about 100,000years ago and more recent population declines. Compared to other Lissotriton species, L. helveticus includes only relatively young genetic lineages, suggesting a Central European pre-Pleistocene distribution followed by complete extirpation of the species during glaciations in that area. Historical demographic trends in the Iberian Peninsula are reversed with respect to the more Mediterranean species Lissotriton boscai, indicating different responses of both species to climate changes. Diversity patterns among Lissotriton species seem to be defined by four main factors: ancestral distributions, colonization capabilities, interactions with other species and effective population sizes. Differences in these factors define two types of species, referred to as "R" (refugia) and "S" (sanctuaries) that explain part of the diversity in patterns of genetic diversity created by glaciations in Western Europe.  相似文献

Sequence variation in nuclear and mitochondrial genes of the giant sea bass Stereolepis gigas collected from the Pacific coast and the northern Sea of Cortez was examined. Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis and direct sequencing showed extremely low mtDNA sequence diversity (13 closely related haplotypes with no evidence of geographical population subdivision). The mitochondrial haplotype mismatch distribution is consistent with a population expansion following the Last Pleistocene glaciation. Differences in single nucleotide polymorphism frequencies between Pacific and Sea of Cortez populations were detected at two of four nuclear loci, which may reflect natural selection or genetic drift in populations with low effective numbers of males. Although Pacific coast and Sea of Cortez populations of giant sea bass do not exhibit the mitochondrial phylogenetic break characteristic of many species with disjunct Pacific and Gulf populations, the possibility of genetic differentiation at nuclear loci suggests that a cautious approach to broodstock selection for captive breeding and restoration programmes be exercised.  相似文献

Tuatara (two species of Sphenodon) are the last representatives of a branch of an ancient reptilian lineage, Sphenodontia, that have been isolated on the New Zealand landmass for 82 million years. We present analyses of geographic variation in allozymes, mitochondrial DNA, nuclear DNA sequences, and one-way albumin immunological comparisons. These all confirm a surprisingly low level of genetic diversity within Sphenodon for such an ancient lineage. We hypothesise a recent extended population bottleneck, probably during the Pliocene/Pleistocene glaciation cycles, to explain the current paucity of variation. All data sets reveal clear genetic differentiation between the northern populations and those in Cook Strait, but offer conflicting views of the history and taxonomic relationships of the Cook Strait population on North Brother Island, currently recognised as Sphenodon guntheri. Allozymes show this population to be the most divergent of all tuatara populations, but preliminary mitochondrial DNA data indicate few differences between S. guntheri and Cook Strait Sphenodon punctatus. Interpretation of the trees is confounded by the lack of a suitable outgroup. As in other cases of conflicting nuclear and mitochondrial data sets, the different data sets likely reveal different aspects of the animals' evolutionary history, and introgression is not uncommon between species pairs.  相似文献

Aim Phylogeographical patterns in the Ryukyu Archipelago have been explained primarily by landbridge formation and the opening of two straits in the Pliocene, namely the Tokara and Kerama gaps. These old straits have been considered to be the barriers most likely to determine genetic boundaries. To test this, we conducted a molecular analysis of the herb Ophiorrhiza japonica. We discuss the causes of and processes involved in its phylogeographical structure and explore aspects of island separation other than the duration of the straits to explain genetic boundaries at the gaps. Location Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. Methods Plants were collected from 40 localities in the archipelago and vicinity. Non‐coding regions of chloroplast DNA were sequenced. The genealogical relationships among haplotypes were estimated using a statistical parsimony network. To examine the phylogeographical structure, we compared two parameters of population differentiation, namely GST and NST, and conducted correlation analysis of genetic and geographical distances. Genetic boundaries were identified using Monmonier’s maximum difference algorithm. To test vicariance–dispersal hypotheses, that is, vicariance after migration via the Pliocene landbridge or over‐sea dispersal in the Pleistocene, molecular dating analysis was conducted. Results A statistical parsimony network revealed that the haplotypes from the Ryukyu Archipelago and northwards coalesce to one ancestral haplotype in Taiwan. A clear phylogeographical structure was observed: plants within the same population and populations in geographical proximity were phylogenetically close. A genetic boundary was recognized across the Kerama Gap, but not across the Tokara Gap. Dating analysis suggested that population divergence across the Kerama Gap occurred in the early to late Pleistocene. Main conclusions The statistical parsimony network suggests migration from Taiwan and northward range expansion in the archipelago. Based on the divergence time, over‐sea dispersal in the Pleistocene is likely, although migration via a Pliocene landbridge is not totally rejected. Negligible genetic differentiation across the Tokara Gap suggests recent over‐sea dispersal, possibly facilitated by the small geographical width of the gap. Conversely, the large genetic differentiation across the Kerama Gap is probably explained by the large geographical distance across it. The past splitting of a landbridge would have had a significant influence on population differentiation after a certain geographical distance was reached.  相似文献

Repeated recolonization of freshwater environments following Pleistocene glaciations has played a major role in the evolution and adaptation of anadromous taxa. Located at the western fringe of Europe, Ireland and Britain were likely recolonized rapidly by anadromous fishes from the North Atlantic following the last glacial maximum (LGM). While the presence of unique mitochondrial haplotypes in Ireland suggests that a cryptic northern refugium may have played a role in recolonization, no explicit test of this hypothesis has been conducted. The three‐spined stickleback is native and ubiquitous to aquatic ecosystems throughout Ireland, making it an excellent model species with which to examine the biogeographical history of anadromous fishes in the region. We used mitochondrial and microsatellite markers to examine the presence of divergent evolutionary lineages and to assess broad‐scale patterns of geographical clustering among postglacially isolated populations. Our results confirm that Ireland is a region of secondary contact for divergent mitochondrial lineages and that endemic haplotypes occur in populations in Central and Southern Ireland. To test whether a putative Irish lineage arose from a cryptic Irish refugium, we used approximate Bayesian computation (ABC). However, we found no support for this hypothesis. Instead, the Irish lineage likely diverged from the European lineage as a result of postglacial isolation of freshwater populations by rising sea levels. These findings emphasize the need to rigorously test biogeographical hypothesis and contribute further evidence that postglacial processes may have shaped genetic diversity in temperate fauna.  相似文献

Studies of biodiversity in the Maghreb have revealed high genetic diversity and divergent genetic lineages among many taxa including squamates. Geographic barriers such as the Atlas Mountains are one of the key factors promoting genetic differentiation and the high levels of endemism. The lizard-fingered gecko Saurodactylus brosseti is endemic to Morocco. Its range includes both sides of the Atlas Mountains, and although high diversity was previously identified within the species, much of the range was unsampled. To understand the evolutionary and biogeographical history of this species, we used mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data from 64 populations sampled across the entire species range. We employed phylogenetic methods based on gene trees and species trees as well as a time calibrated Bayesian genealogy and coalescent species delimitation approaches. We uncovered four highly divergent and allopatric mitochondrial lineages that did not share haplotypes at variable nuclear loci, suggesting the four groups have been evolving independently since the Miocene, according to our molecular dating estimates. These results coupled with the geographic pattern of genetic diversity suggest a possible role of the Atlas Mountains for the divergence observed between the four lineages of S. brosseti, while each lineage probably later underwent several episodes of fragmentation followed by (re-) expansion during Pleistocene climatic oscillations. Bayesian species delimitation analysis indicates that the four lineages may well be distinct species but we suggest that detailed morphological analyses are needed prior to taxonomic changes. The four lineages represent ancient independent evolutionary units, and deserve conservation management as distinct entities.  相似文献

Aim

To investigate phylogeographic patterns among and within co‐occurring sea snake species from Australia's endemic viviparous Aipysurus lineage, which includes critically endangered species, and evaluate the conservation implications of geographically structured patterns of genetic divergence and diversity.

Location

Australia's tropical shallow water marine environments spanning four regions: Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Gulf of Carpentaria (GoC), Timor Sea (TS) and coastal WA (WAC).

Methods

Samples from >550 snakes representing all nine nominal Aipysurus group species were obtained from throughout their known Australian ranges. Coalescent phylogenetic analyses and Bayesian molecular dating of mitochondrial DNA, combined with Bayesian and traditional population genetic analyses of 11 microsatellite loci, were used to evaluate genetic divergence and diversity.

Results

Mitochondrial DNA revealed highly congruent phylogeographic breaks among co‐occurring species, largely supported by nuclear microsatellites. For each species, each region was characterized by a unique suite of haplotypes (phylogroups). Divergences between the TS, GoC and/or GBR were invariably shallow and dated as occurring 50,000–130,000 years ago, coinciding with the cyclic Pleistocene emergence of the Torres Strait land bridge. By contrast, sea snakes from coastal WA were consistently highly divergent from other regions and dated as diverging 178,000–526,000 years ago, which was not associated with any known vicariant events.

Main Conclusions

Previously unappreciated highly divergent sea snake lineages in coastal WA potentially represent cryptic species, highlighting this region as a high‐priority area for conservation. The cyclic emergence of the Torres Strait land bridge is consisted with observed divergences between the TS, GoC and/or GBR; however, processes involved in the earlier divergences involving the WAC remain to be determined. The observed strong population genetic structures (as surrogates for dispersal) indicate that sea snakes have limited potential to reverse population declines via replenishment from other sources over time frames relevant to conservation.
