Plants growing in dense stands may not equally acquire or utilize extra carbon gained in elevated CO2. As a result, reproductive differences between dominant and subordinate plants may be altered under rising CO2 conditions. We hypothesized that elevated CO2 would enhance the reproductive allocation of shaded, subordinate Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. (Asteraceae) individuals more than that of light-saturated dominants. We grew stands of A. artemisiifolia at either 360 or 720 μL L−1 CO2 levels and measured the growth and reproductive responses of competing individuals. To test whether elevated CO2 altered size and reproductive inequalities within stands, we compared stand-level coefficients of variation (CV) in height growth and final shoot, root, and reproductive organ biomasses. Elevated CO2 enhanced biomass and reduced the CV for all aspects of plant growth, especially reproductive biomass. Allocation to reproduction was higher in the elevated CO2 than in the ambient treatment, and this difference was more pronounced in small, rather than large plant positive relationships between the CV and total stand productivity declined under elevated CO2, indicating that growth enhancements to smaller plants diminished the relative biomass advantages of larger plants in increasingly crowded conditions. We conclude that elevated CO2 stimulates stand-level reproduction while CO2-induced growth gains of subordinate A. artemisiifolia plants minimize differences in the reproductive output of small and large plants. Thus, more individuals are likely to produce greater amounts of seeds and pollen in future populations of this allergenic weed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Birch (Betula pendula Roth.) seedlings were kept for two growing seasons under ambient (~350 µmol mol-1) and elevated (~700 µmol mol-1) [CO2]. The present study was designed to examine the effects of [CO2] and pot size on growth and carbon allocation under conditions of non-limiting water and nutrient supply, in order to separate the effects of source-sink interaction from the effects of nutrient deficiency. The manipulation of the source-sink relations had a strong influence on the growth response to elevated [CO2]. When the rooting volume was inadequate, it resulted in a source-sink imbalance which constrained growth under elevated [CO2]. When root exploration was unconstrained, total dry mass was significantly increased (by about 24%) under elevated [CO2]. However, the allometric relationships in allocation pattern and in morphogenetic development were not affected by either [CO2] or pot treatments when the saplings were of the same size. Thus, by constraining dry mass production, small sinks affected the magnitude of the growth responses to elevated [CO2], but did not affect the plant allocation pattern and allometric relationships when nutrient supply was non-limiting. However, by slowing down growth, sink restrictions counteract the speed-up of ontogeny which is the main effect of elevated [CO2] on tree growth.  相似文献

Wide variation exists in the growth responses of C3 plants to elevated CO2 levels. To investigate the role of photosynthetic feedback in this phenomenon, photosynthetic parameters and growth were measured for lines of Flaveria linearis with low, intermediate or high cytosolic fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (cytFBPase) activity when grown at either 35 or 65 Pa CO2. The effects of pot size on the responses of these lines to elevated CO2 were also examined. Photosynthesis and growth of plants with low cytFBPase activity were less responsive to elevated CO2, and these plants had a reduced maximum potential for photosynthesis and growth. Plants with intermediate cytFBPase activity also showed a lower relative growth enhancement when grown at 65 Pa CO2. There was a significant pot size effect on photosynthesis and growth for line 85-1 (high cytFBPase). This effect was greatest for line 85-1 when grown at 35 Pa CO2, since these plants showed the greatest downward acclimation of photosynthesis when grown in small pots. There was a minimal pot size effect for line 84-9 (low cytFBPase), and this could be partly attributed to the reduced CO2 sensitivity of this line. It is proposed that the capacity for sucrose synthesis in C3, plants is partly responsible for their wide variation in CO2 responsiveness.  相似文献

Interactive effects of root restriction and atmospheric CO2 enrichment on plant growth, photosynthetic capacity, and carbohydrate partitioning were studied in cotton seedlings (Gossypium hirsutum L.) grown for 28 days in three atmospheric CO2 partial pressures (270, 350, and 650 microbars) and two pot sizes (0.38 and 1.75 liters). Some plants were transplanted from small pots into large pots after 20 days. Reduction of root biomass resulting from growth in small pots was accompanied by decreased shoot biomass and leaf area. When root growth was less restricted, plants exposed to higher CO2 partial pressures produced more shoot and root biomass than plants exposed to lower levels of CO2. In small pots, whole plant biomass and leaf area of plants grown in 270 and 350 microbars of CO2 were not significantly different. Plants grown in small pots in 650 microbars of CO2 produced greater total biomass than plants grown in 350 microbars, but the dry weight gain was found to be primarily an accumulation of leaf starch. Reduced photosynthetic capacity of plants grown at elevated levels of CO2 was clearly associated with inadequate rooting volume. Reductions in net photosynthesis were not associated with decreased stomatal conductance. Reduced carboxylation efficiency in response to CO2 enrichment occurred only when root growth was restricted suggesting that ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activity may be responsive to plant source-sink balance rather than to CO2 concentration as a single factor. When root-restricted plants were transplanted into large pots, carboxylation efficiency and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration capacity increased indicating that acclimation of photosynthesis was reversible. Reductions in photosynthetic capacity as root growth was progressively restricted suggest sink-limited feedback inhibition as a possible mechanism for regulating net photosynthesis of plants grown in elevated CO2.  相似文献

The nature of photosynthetic acclimation to elevated CO2 is evaluated from the results of over 40 studies focusing on the effect of long-term CO2 enrichment on the short-term response of photosynthesis to intercellular CO2 (the A/Ci response). The effect of CO2 enrichment on the A/Ci response was dependent on growth conditions, with plants grown in small pots (< 5 L) or low nutrients usually exhibiting a reduction of A at a given Ci, while plants grown without nutrient deficiency in large pots or in the field tended to exhibit either little reduction or an enhancement of A at a given Ci following a doubling or tripling of atmospheric CO2 during growth. Using theoretical interpretations of A/Ci curves to assess acclimation, it was found that when pot size or nutrient deficiency was not a factor, changes in the shape of A/Ci curves which are indicative of a reallocation of resources within the photosynthetic apparatus typically were not observed. Long-term CO2 enrichment usually had little effect or increased the value of A at all Ci. However, a minority of species grown at elevated CO2 exhibited gas exchange responses indicative of a reduced amount of Rubisco and an enhanced capacity to metabolize photosynthetic products. This type of response was considered beneficial because it enhanced both photosynthetic capacity at high CO2 and reduced resource investment in excessive Rubisco capacity. The ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 (the Ci/Ca ratio) was used to evaluate stomatal acclimation. Except under water and humidity stress, Ci/Ca exhibited no consistent change in a variety of C3 species, indicating no stomatal acclimation. Under drought or humidity stress, Ci/Ca declined in high-CO2 grown plants, indicating stomata will become more conservative during stress episodes in future high CO2 environments.Abbreviations A net CO2 assimilation rate - Ci (Ca) intercellular (ambient) partial pressure of CO2 - operational Ci intercellular partial pressure of CO2 at a given ambient partial pressure of CO2 - gs stomatal conductance - normal CO2 current atmospheric mole fraction of CO2 (330 to 355 mol mol–1) - Rubisco ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase  相似文献

The effects of elevated [CO2] on 25 variables describing soybean physiology, growth and yield are reviewed using meta‐analytic techniques. This is the first meta‐analysis to our knowledge performed on a single crop species and summarizes the effects of 111 studies. These primary studies include numerous soybean growth forms, various stress and experimental treatments, and a range of elevated [CO2] levels (from 450 to 1250 p.p.m.), with a mean of 689 p.p.m. across all studies. Stimulation of soybean leaf CO2 assimilation rate with growth at elevated [CO2] was 39%, despite a 40% decrease in stomatal conductance and a 11% decrease in Rubisco activity. Increased leaf CO2 uptake combined with an 18% stimulation in leaf area to provide a 59% increase in canopy photosynthetic rate. The increase in total dry weight was lower at 37%, and seed yield still lower at 24%. This shows that even in an agronomic species selected for maximum investment in seed, several plant level feedbacks prevent additional investment in reproduction, such that yield fails to reflect fully the increase in whole plant carbon uptake. Large soil containers (> 9 L) have been considered adequate for assessing plant responses to elevated [CO2]. However, in open‐top chamber experiments, soybeans grown in large pots showed a significant threefold smaller stimulation in yield than soybeans grown in the ground. This suggests that conclusions about plant yield based on pot studies, even when using very large containers, are a poor reflection of performance in the absence of any physical restriction on root growth. This review supports a number of current paradigms of plant responses to elevated [CO2]. Namely, stimulation of photosynthesis is greater in plants that fix N and have additional carbohydrate sinks in nodules. This supports the notion that photosynthetic capacity decreases when plants are N‐limited, but not when plants have adequate N and sink strength. The root : shoot ratio did not change with growth at elevated [CO2], sustaining the charge that biomass allocation is unaffected by growth at elevated [CO2] when plant size and ontogeny are considered.  相似文献

Plant mineral nutrients such as phosphorus may exert major control on crop responses to the rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations. To evaluate the growth, nutrient dynamics, and efficiency responses to CO2 and phosphorus nutrition, soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) was grown in controlled environment growth chambers with sufficient (0.50 mM) and deficient (0.10 and 0.01 mM) phosphate (Pi) supply under ambient and elevated CO2 (aCO2, 400 and eCO2, 800 µmol mol?1, respectively). The CO2 × Pi interaction was detected for leaf area, leaf and stem dry weight, and total plant biomass. The severe decrease in plant biomass in Pi-deficient plants (10–76%) was associated with reduced leaf area and photosynthesis (Pnet). The degree of growth stimulation (0–55% total biomass) by eCO2 was dependent upon the severity of Pi deficiency and was closely associated with the increased phosphorus utilization efficiency. With the exception of leaf and root biomass, Pi deficiency decreased the biomass partitioning to other plant organs with the maximum decrease observed in seed weight (8–42%) across CO2 levels. The increased tissue nitrogen (N) concentration in Pi-deficient plants was accredited to the lower biomass and increased nutrient uptake due to the larger root to shoot ratio. The tissue P and N concentration tended to be lower at eCO2 versus aCO2 and did not appear to be the main cause of the lack of CO2 response of growth and Pnet under severe Pi deficiency. The leaf N/P ratio of >16 was detrimental to soybean growth. The tissue P concentration needed to attain the maximum productivity for biomass and seed yield tended to be higher at eCO2 versus aCO2. Therefore, the eCO2 is likely to increase the leaf critical P concentration for maximum biomass productivity and yield in soybean.  相似文献

To elucidate how enriched CO2 atmospheres, soil fertility, and light availability interact to influence the long-term growth of tree seedlings, six co-occurring members of temperate forest communities including ash (Fraxinus americana L.), gray birch (Betula populifolia), red maple (Acer rubrum), yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis), striped maple (Acer pensylvanicum), and red oak (Quercus rubra L.) were raised in a glasshouse for three years in a complete factorial design. After three years of growth, plants growing in elevated CO2 atmospheres were generally larger than those in ambient CO2 atmospheres, however, magnitudes of CO2-induced growth enhancements were contingent on the availability of nitrogen and light, as well as species identity. For all species, magnitudes of CO2-induced growth enhancements after one year of growth were greater than after three years of growth, though species' growth enhancements over the three years declined at different rates. These results suggest that CO2-induced enhancements in forest productivity may not be sustained for long periods of time. Additionally, species' differential growth responses to elevated CO2 may indirectly influence forest productivity via long-term species compositional changes in forests.  相似文献

Quantitative integration of the literature on the effect of elevated CO2 on woody plants is important to aid our understanding of forest health in coming decades and to better predict terrestrial feedbacks on the global carbon cycle. We used meta-analytic methods to summarize and interpret more than 500 reports of effects of elevated CO2 on woody plant biomass accumulation and partitioning, gas exchange, and leaf nitrogen and starch content. The CO2 effect size metric we used was the log-transformed ratio of elevated compared to ambient response means weighted by the inverse of the variance of the log ratio. Variation in effect size among studies was partitioned according to the presence of interacting stress factors, length of CO2 exposure, functional group status, pot size, and type of CO2 exposure facility. Both total biomass (W T) and net CO2 assimilation (A) increased significantly at about twice ambient CO2, regardless of growth conditions. Low soil nutrient availability reduced the CO2 stimulation of W T by half, from +31% under optimal conditions to +16%, while low light increased the response to +52%. We found no significant shifts in biomass allocation under high CO2. Interacting stress factors had no effect on the magnitude of responses of A to CO2, although plants grown in growth chambers had significantly lower responses (+19%) than those grown in greenhouses or in open-top chambers (+54%). We found no consistent evidence for photosynthetic acclimation to CO2 enrichment except in trees grown in pots <0.5 l (−36%) and no significant CO2 effect on stomatal conductance. Both leaf dark respiration and leaf nitrogen were significantly reduced under elevated CO2 (−18% and −16% respectively, data expressed on a leaf mass basis), while leaf starch content increased significantly except in low nutrient grown gymnosperms. Our results provide robust, statistically defensible estimates of elevated CO2 effect sizes against which new results may be compared or for use in forest and climate model parameterization. To investigate the effect of elevated CO2 on the size inequality and size structure, even‐aged monospecific stands of an annual, Chenopodium album, were established at ambient and doubled CO2 with high and low nutrient availabilities in open top chambers. The growth of individual plants was monitored non‐destructively every week until flowering. Elevated CO2 significantly enhanced plant growth at high nutrients, but did not at low nutrients. The size inequality expressed as the coefficient of variation tended to increase at elevated CO2. Size structure of the stands was analyzed by the cumulative frequency distribution of plant size. At early stages of plant growth, CO2 elevation benefited all individuals and shifted the whole size distribution of the stand to large size classes. At later stages, dominant individuals were still larger at elevated than at ambient CO2, but the difference in small subordinate individuals between two CO2 levels became smaller. Although these tendencies were found at both nutrient availabilities, difference in size distribution between CO2 levels was larger at high nutrients. The CO2 elevation did not significantly enhance the growth rate as a function of plant size except for the high nutrient stand at the earliest stage, indicating that the higher biomass at elevated CO2 at later stages in the high nutrient stand was caused by the larger size of individuals at the earliest stage. Thus the effect of elevated CO2 on stand structure and size inequality strongly depended on the growth stage and nutrient availabilities.  相似文献

Although desert ecosystems are predicted to be the most responsive to elevated CO2, low nutrient availability may limit increases in productivity and cause plants in deserts to allocate more resources to root biomass or activity for increased nutrient acquisition. We measured root respiration of two Mojave Desert shrubs, Ambrosia dumosa and Larrea tridentata, grown under ambient (~375 ppm) and elevated (~517 ppm) CO2 concentrations at the Nevada Desert FACE Facility (NDFF) over five growing seasons. In addition, we grew L. tridentata seedlings in a greenhouse with similar CO2 treatments to determine responses of primary and lateral roots to an increase in CO2. In both field and greenhouse studies, root respiration was not significantly affected by elevated CO2. However, respiration of A. dumosa roots <1 month old was significantly greater than respiration of A. dumosa roots between 1 and 4 months old. For both shrub species, respiration rates of very fine (<1.0 mm diameter) roots were significantly greater than those of fine (1–2 mm diameter) roots, and root respiration decreased as soil water decreased. Because specific root length was not significantly affected by CO2 and because field minirhizotron measurements of root production were not significantly different, we infer that root growth at the NDFF has not increased with elevated CO2. Furthermore, other studies at the NDFF have shown increased nutrient availability under elevated CO2, which reduces the need for roots to increase scavenging for nutrients. Thus, we conclude that A. dumosa and L. tridentata root systems have not increased in size or activity, and increased shoot production observed under elevated CO2 for these species does not appear to be constrained by the plant's root growth or activity.  相似文献

The effect of elevated CO2 on growth of wheat plants (Triticum aestivum cv. Minaret) and soil protozoan and bacterial populations was investigated in soil pots placed in open top chambers fumigated with ambient air or air enriched with CO2 (ambient + 320 l L–1 CO2). We harvested plants two times during the growing season and measured the biomass and the C and N content of roots and shoots. The soil was divided into bulk and rhizosphere soil and the number of bacteria (colony-forming units, CFU) and protozoa was determined. There was no effect of atmospheric CO2 content on the number of bacteria, but the total number of bacterivorous protozoa was higher in pots from the elevated CO2 treatment. This increase was mainly due to an increase in the number of protozoa in the bulk soil. Density of protozoa in the rhizosphere was not affected by elevated CO2. This suggests that the increase in protozoan numbers was a result of a general increase in rhizodeposition, presumably caused by increased root production, and not to an increased root exudation per root mass. After harvest, soil from the two treatments was incubated with and without roots and the respiration rate was estimated at intervals for 200 days. During the first 55 days, the specific root induced respiration rate was not affected by the CO2 level at which the plants had been grown, indicating that the quality of the easily decomposable components of the roots was not affected by CO2 level.  相似文献

Mentha aquatica L. was grown at different nutrient availabilities in water and in air at 60% RH. The plants were kept at 600 mmol m?3 free CO2 dissolved in water (40 times air equilibrium) and at 30 mmol m?3 CO2 in air to ensure CO2 saturation of growth in both environments. We quantified the transpiration-independent water transport from root to shoot in submerged plants relative to the transpiration stream in emergent plants and tested the importance of transpiration in sustaining nutrient flux and shoot growth. The acropetal water flow was substantial in submerged Mentha aquatica, reaching 14% of the transpiration stream in emergent plants. The transpiration-independent mass flow of water from the roots, measured by means of tritiated water, was diverted to leaves and adventitious shoots in active growth. The plants grew well and at the same rates in water and air, but nutrient fluxes to the shoot were greater in plants grown in air than in those that were submerged when they were rooted in fertile sediments. Restricted O2 supply to the roots of submerged plants may account for the smaller nutrient concentrations, though these exceeded the levels required to saturate growth. In hydroponics, the root medium was aerated and circulated between submerged and emergent plants to minimize differences in medium chemistry, and here the two growth forms behaved similarly and could fully exploit nutrient enrichment. It is concluded that the lack of transpiration from leaf surfaces in a vapour-saturated atmosphere, or under water, is not likely to constrain the transfer of nutrients from root to shoot in herbaceous plants. Nutrient deficiency under these environmental conditions is more likely to derive from restricted development and function of the roots in waterlogged anoxic soils or from low porewater concentrations of nutrients.

本文以玉米为研究对象,采用盆栽底部通入CO2的方法模拟不同CO2泄漏情景,研究CK(0 g m-2 d-1)和G1000(1000 g m-2 d-1)和G2000(2000 g m-2 d-1)三种泄漏情景下CO2对玉米根系形态的影响。

Abstract

This work investigates the relationship between plant growth, grain yield, nutrient acquisition and partitioning in rice (Oryza sativa L.) under elevated CO2. Plants were grown hydroponically in growth chambers with a 12-h photoperiod at either 370 or 700 µmol CO2 mol?1 concentration. Plant dry mass (DM), grain yield and macro- and micronutrient concentrations of vegetative organs and grains were determined. Elevated CO2 increased biomass at tillering, and this was largely due to an increase in root mass by 160%. Elevated CO2 had no effect on total nutrient uptake (N, P, K, Mg and Ca). However, nutrient partitioning among organs was significantly altered. N partitioning to leaf blades was significantly decreased, whereas the N partitioning into the leaf sheaths and roots was increased. Nutrient use efficiency of N, P, K, and Mg in all organs was significantly increased at elevated CO2. At harvest maturity, grain yield was increased by 27% at elevated CO2 while grain (protein) concentration was decreased by a similar magnitude (28%), suggesting that critical nutrient requirements for rice might need to be reassessed with global climate change.  相似文献

Birch seedlings (Betula pendula) were grown for four months in a greenhouse at three nutrient levels (fertilization of 0, 100 and 500 kg ha-1 monthy) and at four CO2 concentrations (350, 700, 1050 and 1400 ppm). The effect of CO2 concentration on the biomass production depended on the nutrient status. When mineralization of the soil material was the only source of nutrients (0 kg ha-1), CO2 enhancement reduced the biomass production slightly, whereas the highest production increase occurred at a fertilization of 100 kg ha-1, being over 100% between 350 and 700 ppm CO2. At 500 kg ha-1 the production increase was smaller, and the production decreased beyond a CO2 concentration of 700 ppm. The CO2 concentration had a slight effect on the biomass distribution, the leaves accounting for the highest proportion at the lowest CO2 concentration (350 ppm). An increase in nutrient status led to a longer growth period and increased the nutrient concentrations in the plants, but the CO2 concentration had no effect on the growth rhythm and higher CO2 reduced the nutrient concentrations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Peach (Prunus persica L.) seedlings were germinated and grown for two growing seasons either in open top chambers (OTC) with ambient (350 μmol mol-1) or elevated (700 μmol mol-1) [CO2], or in an outside control plot, all located inside a glasshouse. The seedlings were grown in 10 dm3 pots and were fertilised once a week following Ingestad principles in order to supply mineral nutrients at free access rates. In the second growing season, rapid onset of water stress was imposed on rapidly growing peach seedlings by withholding water for a four-week drying cycle. In elevated [CO2], seedlings had a total dry mass which was 33% higher than that in ambient [CO2]. This increase was largely a consequence of increased height growth. [CO2] and irrigation treatments had only small effects on allocation, and there was no increase in root allocation with low water availability possibly as consequence of the high-nutrient regime. Specific leaf area was significantly reduced in elevated [CO2], and probably resulted from increases in starch concentrations. Stomatal conductance (g s) was not affected by elevated [CO2] both in well-watered and water-stressed seedlings. The combination of increased assimilation rate (A) and unchanged g s led to large increases in intrinsic water use efficiency in response to elevated [CO2]. The A/C i curves were used to derive the parameters describing photosynthetic capacity, Amax, Jmax and Vcmax . These parameters were similar among [CO2] treatments; thus, there was no downward acclimation of photosynthesis in elevated [CO2]. Moreover, Amax, Jmax and Vcmax scaled linearly with leaf N content per unit leaf area. This indicates that the whole-plant source-sink balance of peach seedlings was not disrupted by growth in elevated [CO2], because root volume and nutrient supply were non-restricting. These values may be used in scaling up models to improve their ability to predict the magnitude of tree responses to climate change in the Mediterranean area.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide enrichment may increase the Al tolerance of trees by increasing root growth, root exudation and/or mycorrhizal colonization. The effect of elevated CO2 on the response of mycorrhizal pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.) seedlings to Al was determined in two experiments with different levels of nutrients, 0.1- or 0.2-strength Clark solution. During each experiment, seedlings inoculated with the ectomycorrhizal fungus Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker & Couch were grown 13 weeks in sand irrigated with nutrient solution (pH 3.8) containing 0, 6.25, 12.5, or 25 mg/l Al (0, 232, 463, or 927 μM Al) in growth chambers fumigated with 350 (ambient) or 700 (elevated) μl/l CO2. At ambient CO2, in the absence of Al, mean total dry weights (DW) of seedlings at the high nutrient level were 164% higher than those at the low level. Total DW at elevated CO2, in the absence of Al, was significantly greater than that in ambient CO2 at the low (+34%) and high (+16%) nutrient levels. Root and shoot DW at both nutrient levels decreased with increasing Al concentrations with Al reducing root growth more than shoot growth. Although visible symptoms of Al toxicity in roots and needles were reduced by CO2 enrichment, there were no significant CO2 × Al interactions for shoot or root DW. The percentage of seedling roots that became mycorrhizal was negatively related to nutrient level and was greater at elevated than at ambient CO2 levels. Generally, elevated CO2 had little effect on concentration of mineral nutrients in roots and needles. Aluminum reduced concentrations of most nutrients by inhibiting uptake. Soil N availability may play an important role in regulating the long-term responses of plants to rising atmospheric CO2 partial pressure. To further examine the linkage between above- and belowground C and N cycles at elevated CO2, we grew clonally propagated cuttings of Populus grandidentata in the field at ambient and twice ambient CO2 in open bottom root boxes filled with organic matter poor native soil. Nitrogen was added to all root boxes at a rate equivalent to net N mineralization in local dry oak forests. Nitrogen added during August was enriched with 15N to trace the flux of N within the plant-soil system. Above-and belowground growth, CO2 assimilation, and leaf N content were measured non-destructively over 142 d. After final destructive harvest, roots, stems, and leaves were analyzed for total N and 15N. There was no CO2 treatment effect on leaf area, root length, or net assimilation prior to the completion of N addition. Following the N addition, leaf N content increased in both CO2 treatments, but net assimilation showed a sustained increase only in elevated CO2 grown plants. Root relative extension rate was greater at elevated CO2, both before and after the N addition. Although final root biomass was greater at elevated CO2, there was no CO2 effect on plant N uptake or allocation. While low soil N availability severely inhibited CO2 responses, high CO2 grown plants were more responsive to N. This differential behavior must be considered in light of the temporal and spatial heterogeneity of soil resources, particularly N which often limits plant growth in temperate forests.  相似文献

This study investigated simultaneous plant and soil feedbacks on growth enhancement with elevated [CO2] within microcosms of yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) in the second year of growth. Understanding the integrated responses of model ecosystems may provide key insight into the potential net nutrient feedbacks on [CO2] growth enhancements in temperate forests. We measured the net biomass production, C:N ratios, root architecture, and mycorrhizal responses of yellow birch, in situ rates gross nitrogen mineralization and the partitioning of available NH4+ between yellow birch and soil microbes. Elevated atmospheric [CO2] resulted in significant alterations in the cycling of N within the microcosms. Plant C/N ratios were significantly increased, gross mineralization and NH4+ consumption rates were decreased, and relative microbial uptake of NH4+ was increased, representing a suite of N cycling negative feedbacks on N availability. However, increased C/N ratios may also be a mechanism which allows plants to maintain higher growth with a constant or reduced N supply. Total plant N content was increased with elevated [CO2], suggesting that yellow birch had successfully increased their ability to acquire nutrients during the first year of growth. However, plant uptake rates of NH4+ had decreased in the second year. This discrepancy implies that, in this study, nitrogen uptake showed a trend through ontogeny of decreasing enhancement under elevated [CO2]. The reduced N mineralization and relatively increased N immobilization are a potential feedback which may drive this ontogenetic trend. This study has demonstrated the importance of using an integrated approach to exploring potential nutrient-cycling feedbacks in elevated [CO2].  相似文献
