This study investigated the morphological and biochemical characteristics of the CB1, CB3, CB5, CB8 and CB12 cotton varieties and evaluated their effects on third instar larval movement, and body weight of the cotton armyworm Spodoptera litura at different developmental stages. The cotton varieties differed in their plant architecture, branching, stem color and hairiness, leaf color and hairiness, leaf trichome density, flower color, numbers of leaves and bolls per plant, concentrations of protein and starch, and boll length, width and weight. The CB1 and CB3 varieties possessed significantly higher trichome densities, while CB8 produced larger and heavier bolls. Boll bearing was found to be highest in CB1 and lowest in CB8. Biochemical analyses indicated the highest percentage of protein in CB5, and of starch in CB8; concentrations of both were lowest in CB12. Cotton varieties did not affect larval foraging, but their abundance on leaflet, mature and square differed significantly. Analysis of the growth response parameters of S. litura as a result of feeding on the tested varieties revealed that larval instars, pupae and adult moths attained the highest body weight on CB8, followed by CB5, and the lowest weight on CB12. Collectively, the results of this study show that the CB5 and CB8 varieties are favorable host‐plants for cotton armyworms; therefore, these varieties are the least suitable for cultivation.  相似文献

Bacterial seed and boll rot is a newly emerging cotton disease in Pakistan. Twenty-one cotton varieties were screened to find resistance source against the disease. None of these was found to be resistant. Five cotton varieties (CIM-595, MK2, BT-986, BT-986 & SG-1) having 700–1400 Area under disease progress curve (AUDPC) units were found to be moderately resistant to the disease. SLH-317, FH-942, BT-222, BT-666, MNH-457 ranging from 1401–1700 AUDPC units were moderately susceptible while MNH-456, SLH-336, 9811, FH-942, MNH-886 susceptible to boll rot. Seven varieties (FH-114, FH-113, BT-7, BT-212, SLH-BT-4, BT-212 and FH-941) were highly susceptible to bacterial seed and boll rot indicated by 2001–2300 AUDPC units. Biochemical tests identified bacterial isolates as Pantoea agglomerans. Different inoculation techniques were assessed for bacterial pathogenicity and symptoms of boll rot were only observed in needle punctured bolls. One, two and three weeks old bolls were mechanically inoculated by injecting bacterial suspension to evaluate the boll’s age impact on disease severity. Maximum severity was observed in two weeks old bolls. Red cotton bugs (Dysdercus cingulatus) were fed on artificially inoculated diseased bolls and then transferred on healthy bolls. Diseased symptoms were noticed on healthy cotton bolls. Bacterial colonies were recovered and red cotton bug was confirmed as the disease-transmitting vector.  相似文献

为揭示棉麦两熟共生期遮荫对棉花产量与品质形成的影响。在棉花苗期利用模拟棉麦两熟共生期遮荫的方法进行了研究。结果表明,遮荫对棉铃形成的影响因果枝,果节部位而异,遮荫有利于棉株下(1-3果枝),中(4-6果枝),上(7-9果枝)部果枝内围(1-2果节)铃的形成,对外围(≥3果节)尤其顶部果枝(≥10果枝)外围铃形成不利,从而决定铃重也随果枝,果节部位相应地变化,但遮荫对单株平均铃重的影响畔 小,变遮荫棉花籽棉产量而论,下,中部果枝的内围铃籽棉产量高于常规棉,在上,顶部果枝则相反,各部位果枝外围铃的籽棉产量均低于常规棉,遮荫棉花内,外围铃分布为1:0.36(常规棉为1:0.58),产量分布为1:0.42(常规棉为1:0.72)。苗期遮荫对棉纤维,棉籽品质性状的影响也主要在顶部果枝和上部果枝外围铃,综合分析遮荫棉花产量与品质的形成,棉花苗期耐遮荫性品种间存在差异。在本研究中以中9418耐遮荫性最强,中棉所19和春矮早次之。  相似文献

在池栽条件下,以美棉33B为材料,研究花铃期干旱、渍水7 d和渍水14 d处理对棉铃碳水化合物含量的影响及其与生物量累积的关系.结果表明: 干旱处理对下部果枝棉铃铃壳碳水化合物含量的影响较小,降低了中部铃壳碳水化合物含量;干旱处理上部铃壳和渍水处理铃壳可溶性糖、淀粉含量增加,蔗糖含量先降后增,且随渍水持续期延长变幅增大,蔗糖外运受阻加重.与铃壳相比,花铃期干旱和渍水处理对棉籽碳水化合物含量的影响较小.干旱和渍水7 d处理中部果枝棉铃生物量快速增长起始期提前但历时短,下部和上部棉铃生物量累积最大增长速率降低;渍水14 d处理不同果枝部位棉铃生物量累积最大增长速率均降低.相关分析表明,棉铃生物量及其最大增长速率与铃壳可溶性糖和蔗糖含量关系密切.因此,花铃期干旱和渍水影响棉铃蔗糖外运,改变棉铃生物量累积特性,是棉铃生物量降低的原因.

The capacities of the rind (i.e., the developing calyx and petals of squares; and the outer casing, or husk, of bolls) and the internal reproductive portion of cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L. (Malvaceae), squares of three sizes, and bolls of three ages to influence adult female boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), longevity and egg production were evaluated in laboratory bioassays. While feeding on the reproductive portion of squares was expected to support adult boll weevils for considerable periods of time (e.g., medium square reproductive portion: ≈185 days), feeding on rinds also resulted in substantial longevity (e.g., medium square rind: ≈120 days). As anticipated, feeding on the reproductive portion of squares resulted in formation of chorionated eggs in mated females, but a diet comprised exclusively of rinds, particularly from large squares, was associated with gravidity and high fecundity relative to rinds of young and mature bolls. The reproductive portion and rind of post‐bloom and young bolls as sources of food resulted in limited gravidity while mature bolls were not associated with any egg formation. These findings further our understanding of how boll weevils feed on different parts of the cotton plant and how those parts as food sources are related to the biology and ecology of the boll weevil.  相似文献

Abscised cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., fruit in field plots planted at different times were examined to assess adult boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), use of squares and bolls during 2002 and 2003 in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Although boll abscission is not necessarily related to infestation, generally more bolls abscised than squares and abundances of fallen bolls were not related to the planting date treatments. During 2003, fallen squares were most abundant in the late-planted treatment. Although large squares (5.5-8-mm-diameter) on the plant are preferred for boll weevil oviposition, diameter of abscised squares is not a reliable measurement because of shrinkage resulting from desiccation and larval feeding. Fallen feeding-punctured squares and bolls were most abundant in late plantings but differences between fallen feeding-punctured squares versus fallen feeding-punctured bolls were found in only one treatment in 2003. During the same year, fallen oviposition-punctured squares were more numerous in the late-planted treatment than in the earlier treatments. Treatment effects were not found on numbers of oviposition-punctured bolls, but fallen oviposition-punctured squares were more common than bolls in the late-planted treatment compared with earlier treatments each year. Dead weevil eggs, larvae, and pupae inside fallen fruit were few and planting date treatment effects were not detected. Living third instars and pupae were more abundant in fallen squares of the late-planted treatment than in the earlier treatments and bolls of all three treatments. This study shows that fallen squares in late-planted cotton contribute more to adult boll weevil populations than bolls, or squares of earlier plantings.  相似文献

棉花宿生栽培对于雄性不育系的多年生保持和杂交制种,固定杂种优势、加速杂种优势利用和保存种质资源具有重要意义。探讨陆地棉宿生栽培的产量构成因素及其对产量形成的影响,为陆地棉宿生栽培提供理论依据。采用随机区组设计,对三年生、二年生宿生陆地棉的产量构成因素及其对产量形成的影响进行比较研究。结果表明:与一年生棉比较,宿生棉单位面积总铃数明显增多,多数品种的单铃重无明显变化,衣分变化因品种而异。三年生和二年生各因素对产量影响的趋势一致,总铃数影响最大,衣分影响次之,两者主要是直接影响;单铃重通过总铃数的间接影响较大。一年生各因素对产量影响略有不同。宿生栽培的总铃数明显增多,是增产的主要原因,同时应选择衣分高、受宿生年限影响小的品种。  相似文献

Transgenic cotton that produces insecticidal crystal protein Cry1Ac of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has been effective in controlling pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders). We compared responses to bolls of Bt cotton and non-Bt cotton by adult females and neonates from susceptible and Cry1Ac-resistant strains of pink bollworm. In choice tests on caged cotton plants in the greenhouse, neither susceptible nor resistant females laid fewer eggs on Bt cotton bolls than on non-Bt cotton bolls, indicating that the Bt toxin did not deter oviposition. Multiple regression revealed that the number of eggs laid per boll was negatively associated with boll age and positively associated with boll diameter. Females also laid more eggs per boll on plants with more bolls. The distribution of eggs among bolls of Bt cotton and non-Bt cotton was clumped, indicating that boll quality rather than avoidance of previously laid eggs was a primary factor in oviposition preference. Parallel to the results from oviposition experiments, in laboratory no-choice tests with 10 neonates per boll, the number of entrance holes per boll did not differ between Bt cotton and non-Bt cotton for susceptible and resistant neonates. Also, like females, neonates preferred younger bolls and larger bolls. Thus, acceptance of bolls by females for oviposition and by neonates for mining was affected by boll age and diameter, but not by Bt toxin in bolls. The lack of discrimination between Bt and non-Bt cotton bolls by pink bollworm from susceptible and resistant strains indicates that oviposition and mining initiation are independent of susceptibility to Cry1Ac.  相似文献

The cotton plant, Gossypium hirsutum, hosts various pests that damage different structures. Among these pests, Spodoptera cosmioides (Walker) and Spodoptera eridania (Cramer) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are considered important. The objectives of this study were to characterize and to quantify the potential damage of S. eridania and S. cosmioides feeding on different structures of cotton plants. For this purpose, newly-hatched larvae were reared on the following plant parts: leaf and flower bud; leaf and boll; flower bud or boll; and leaf, flower bud and boll. The survival of S. cosmioides and S. eridania was greater than 80% and 70% for larvae fed on cotton plant parts offered separately or together, respectively. One larva of S. eridania damaged 1.7 flower buds, but did not damage bolls, while one larva of S. cosmioides damaged 5.2 flower buds and 3.0 cotton bolls. Spodoptera eridania and S. cosmioides can be considered species with potential to cause economic damage to cotton plants because they can occur throughout cotton developmental stages causing defoliation and losses of reproductive structures. Therefore, the results validate field observations that these two species of Spodoptera are potential pests for cotton.  相似文献

Cotton pests damaging fruiting bodies (squares and young bolls) are difficult to control and their damage results in direct yield loss. Small growers, with low technological inputs, represent a large portion of cotton growers worldwide comprising more than 76 countries; they rely mainly on cultural practices to counteract pest attack in their crops. Boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), oviposition involves puncturing cotton squares and young bolls, causing abscission. We examined the impact on boll weevil population of collecting abscised cotton fruiting bodies and clipping plant terminals at 50% boll maturation in the field during two cotton‐growing seasons and under field cage conditions. Greatest numbers of damaged squares occurred ca. 117 days after planting and clipped plants resulted in reduction of abscised structures and adult boll weevils compared with non‐clipped plants, irrespective of cotton variety. Damaged young bolls were found ca. 128 days after planting in 2009 and 2011, but clipping had no effect. Numbers of boll weevils found in plants of the varieties BRS 201 and BRS Rubi (both in 2009) and BRS Rubi (in 2011) were, respectively, 13‐, 17‐, and 20‐fold greater when clipping plus collecting abscised fruiting bodies were not practiced. Furthermore, the average percentage of the boll weevil parasitoid Bracon vulgaris Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) emerging from abscised and collected structures was similar between clipped and non‐clipped plant terminals in both seasons. Clipping plant terminals did not result in yield reduction and reduced adult boll weevil production. Collecting abscised reproductive structures, clipping plant terminals, and using both practices together reduced boll weevil populations by as much as 63, 57, and 79%, respectively, in cage trials. Thus, these practices cause significant impact on boll weevil populations and are feasible of adoption, especially for smallholder cotton growers.  相似文献

Little is known regarding to impact of simulated shading conditions on cotton yield and fiber quality at different fruiting positions. In this 2-year study, our field experiments investigated the effects of shading percentage on the cotton yield, fiber properties, photosynthesis, and carbohydrate concentrations in boll’s subtending leaves during various growing stages at different fruiting positions (FP). Net photosynthetic rate and effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry decreased in response to shading on both FP1 and FP3 of the 7th sympodial branches, respectively. Shading also reduced sucrose and starch contents of leaves at each fruiting position. Shading decreased the number and mass of cotton bolls, the fiber strength and micronaire, while the fiber length increased at both fruiting positions. Our results suggested that shading resulted in the reduction of the cotton yield and fiber quality, which are mainly associated with the changes in boll number and alteration of photosynthesis and carbohydrate concentrations during the boll development.  相似文献

Development, reproduction and food utilization of three successive generations of beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner), fed on transgenic and non‐transgenic Bt cotton were examined. Significantly longer larval life‐span and lower pupal weight were observed in three successive generations of S. exigua fed on transgenic Bt cotton compared with non‐transgenic Bt cotton. Significantly higher survival rate and adult fecundity of S. exigua were found in three successive generations of S. exigua fed on transgenic Bt cotton compared with non‐transgenic Bt cotton. The survival rate and adult fecundity of S. exigua were occurred significant increase in the third generation compared with the first generation after feeding on transgenic Bt cotton. Significantly lower consumption, frass and relative growth rate (RGR) were observed in three successive generations of S. exigua fed on transgenic Bt cotton compared with non‐transgenic Bt cotton. Cotton variety significantly affected all indices of larval consumption and utilization in three successive generations of S. exigua, except for efficiency of conversion of ingested food. However, beet armyworm generation only significantly affected RGR of S. exigua. The results of this study indicated food quality on the diet‐utilization efficiency of S. exigua was different along with beet armyworm generation. Measuring multigenerational development and food utilization of S. exigua at individual and population level in response to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) can provide a more meaningful evaluation of long‐term population dynamics than experiments on a single generation. It is imperative to develop an appropriate multigenerational pest management tactic to monitor the field population dynamics of non‐target pests (e.g., beet armyworm) in agricultural Bt cotton ecosystem.  相似文献

The influence of southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.), adults (males and females) and fourth to fifth instars on cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., boll abscission, seedcotton yield, fiber quality, and seed viability was evaluated in field studies conducted during 2004 and 2005. Cotton bolls representing several age classes ranging from 0-600 heat units were individually infested with a specific gender or life stage of southern green stink bug. Adults and nymphs induced abscission of bolls that accumulated 0-280 heat units after anthesis. Seedcotton yield was significantly lower in bolls infested with adults (males and females) and late instars through approximately 500 heat units after anthesis. Southern green stink bug feeding on bolls significantly affected the physical fiber properties of micronaire (measure of fiber fineness or maturity), strength, uniformity, and fiber length. Discolored cotton lint in the stink bug-infested bolls was more common than in noninfested bolls. Seed germination and development of normal seedlings for seed harvested from stink bug-infested bolls that accumulated < or =500 heat units beyond anthesis were significantly lower compared with noninfested bolls. No significant differences in boll abscission, yield, fiber quality, and seed germination were detected between southern green stink bug males and females or between adults and fourth to fifth instars.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the behavior of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) and Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) larvae on meridic diet with different concentrations of Bt spray formulation Delfin or isolated Cry1Ac protein or the foliage and bolls from transgenic cotton, Bollgard hybrid RCH-317 Bt. Both insect species selectively fed on nontreated diet compared with the diet treated with Delfin. While H. armigera exhibited concentration response with Cry1Ac, this protein did not affect S. litura larvae. In general Helicoverpa selected diet with low concentrations (EC20 and EC50 levels) of Cry1Ac compared with higher concentrations of Cry1Ac. In order to develop appropriate management strategies, a thorough understanding of the behavioral mechanisms leading to the responses of insects to the proteins in transgenic varieties is required. Thus, based on results of the insects fed individually on the leaf discs or bolls from transgenic cotton plants alone or under choice situation with meridic diet revealed that H. armigera larvae preferred meridic diet to transgenic leaves or bolls expressing Cry1Ac protein. H. armigera larvae preferred meridic diet to plant material; more than 70% larvae were seen on the meridic diet, and average larval weight gain was in the range of 121.7–130.5 mg. However, in case of S. litura the larvae showed no significant discrimination between meridic diet and the leaf discs. In fact more than 60% larvae preferred leaf discs for feeding, though Cry1Ac expression in leaf discs was in the range of 0.9–2.18 μg/g. Thus differences in behavioral response could potentially impact the level of efficacy of crop cultivars that have been genetically engineered to produce these proteins.  相似文献

Summary The data from an experiment in cotton consisting of three testers and 12 lines selected deliberately have been analysed. The investigation showed higher specific combining ability variance for yield of seed cotton and number of bolls, indicating the predominance of non-additive gene action. Of parental lines, H777 was found to possess high g.c.a. effects for seed cotton yield, number of bolls and number of sympodes. Parent H842 contributed only for boll weight, whereas H655 was good general combiner for number of monopodes. There appeared to be better chances for increasing the yield by exploiting hybrid vigour for the number of bolls and boll weight. The presence of marked non-additive gene effects, in addition to additive gene effects, indicated the need for exploiting both the fixable and non-fixable components of genetic variance for increasing productivity in cotton.  相似文献

Premature senescence, unopened and rotted bolls are the primary constrictions hampering the accomplishment of yield potential in Bt cotton. An experiment was conducted with the objectives to delay senescence, enhance boll opening and reduce the boll rotting. The experiment was conducted at two randomly selected sites of University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan, during 2015 and repeated in 2016. Each experiment was laid out in randomised complete block design with two by two factorial arrangement structure and replicated five times. Treatments were comprised of R0 = no fruit removal; R1 = removal of early fruit branches (REFB) and two genotypes, viz. V1 = FH‐142 and V2 = MNH‐886. Genotypes were selected on the basis of abiotic stress tolerance (FH‐142) and susceptibility (MNH‐886). Nodes above cracked bolls, monopodial branches, opened bolls per plant and seed cotton yield were enhanced by 23, 12, 13 and 17%, respectively, under the influence of REFB over no fruit branch removal, while the REFB‐mediated decrease in boll rotting was 27%. Moreover, the response of MNH‐886 was more remarkable than FH‐142 for all studied variables. Conclusively, REFB increased the number of nodes above a cracked boll, monopodial branches, opened bolls per plant and seed cotton yield while decreased rotted bolls per plant in both genotypes.  相似文献

Brown stink bug, Euschistus servus (Say), was infested on cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., plants during reproductive stages to determine the effects on boll injury and seedcotton yield. During each week in 2002 and 2003, significantly more bolls with > or = 1 injured locule, bolls with > or = 2 injured locules, and bolls with discolored lint were recorded on stink bug-infested plants compared with that on noninfested plants. Significantly fewer bolls displayed external injury on the boll exocarp compared with bolls with only internal locule injury. Boll injury was significantly underestimated by the presence of external symptomology. The boll population increased 6.6- and 5.1-fold from weeks 1-5 in 2002 and 2003, respectively. There was a corresponding 6.2- and 4.6-fold increase in 2002 and 2003, respectively, for total bolls injured from weeks 1-5. Percentage of boll injury ranged from 10.7 (week 4) to 27.4 (week 2) in 2002 and from 9.2 (week 3) to 16.0 (week 2) in 2003. Percentage of injury was greatest during weeks 1 and 2 in both years and also in week 5 in 2002. Brown stink bug significantly reduced seedcotton yield of bolls present on cotton plants during weeks 1, 2, and 5 in 2002 and in weeks 4 and 5 in 2003. However, total seedcotton yield, as a function of bolls exposed to brown stink bug and subsequent bolls produced on plant in the absence of stink bugs, was not significantly different for plots infested during weeks 1-4 in 2002 and weeks 1-3 in 2003. Flowering period and boll population influence the severity of stink bug injury on seedcotton yield. Infestation timing and number of bolls should be considered, in addition to insect densities, when initiating treatments against brown stink bug.  相似文献

The host selection for oviposition by Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) among corn, millet, cotton and soybean, and its relationship with the biological characteristics were investigated. Free and non-choice tests for oviposition using plots containing five plants each, from each host in plastic greenhouse, resulted in similar oviposition preference among the host plants. In addition, selected biological characteristics of S. frugiperda were determined in the laboratory with larvae feeding on host leaves, and the combination of leaf and cotton boll. Neonate larvae exhibited low success of colonization on cotton boll compared to the leaves of all other hosts. Spodoptera frugiperda fed only on cotton bolls exhibited longer larval and pupal development, and longer adult life span; however with similar egg production. Larvae fed cotton leaves during six days and then transferred to cotton bolls, however, exhibited development and reproduction similar to those reared on corn or only on cotton leaves. Therefore, the variations on immature stages of S. frugiperda were not related with host selection for oviposition which was similar among the studied hosts. Based on our data, the millet as a winter, rotational, and cover crop is a potential host for S. frugiperda, while leaves and cotton bolls were diets of intermediate suitability as compared to corn and soybean leaves.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted in an environmental growth chamber to determine the movement and feeding preferences of Nezara viridula (L.) and Euschistus serous (Say) on individual cotton plants. Fifth instars were caged by species on a single cotton plant (FM 9063 B2F) containing four discrete boll sizes ranging from 1.1 to 3.0 cm in diameter over a period of 5 d per replication. Two digital video cameras were simultaneously focused on each of the four bolls per plant to visually confirm stink bug resting and movement. During the study, a total of 4,080 h of video footage was recorded and analyzed. Results showed that N. viridula and E. serous did not prefer the exact same boll sizes. In a trial with eight stink bugs per plant, N. viridula spent more time on the three larger boll classes, 1.6-2.0, 2.1-2.5, and 2.6-3.0 cm. In a separate trial with one stink bug per plant, N. viridula spent more time on the larger boll classes while E. serous exhibited the strongest preference for 1.1-1.5 and 2.1-2.5 cm bolls. N. viridula moved more often than E. serous and both species moved more often during photophase compared with scotophase. Regardless of species or number of bugs released, bolls in the smallest boll size class fell off the plant about 3 d after the bugs were released. These results confirm that scouts who are estimating stink bug damage should select bolls in the 2.1-2.5 cm diameter boll size class.  相似文献

2000年7月中旬和8月中旬, 分别测定了采自田间的转CpTI-Bt基因双价抗虫棉(SGK321, 以下简称CpTI-Bt棉)和转Bt基因抗虫棉(中30,以下简称Bt棉)对棉铃虫Helicoverpa armigera幼虫存活、生长的影响。结果表明:7月中旬两种转基因抗虫棉抗虫效果均较好,尤其是CpTI-Bt棉棉叶和花瓣对4龄幼虫3天内致死率为92%以上;8月中旬两种转基因棉的抗虫活性均明显降低,且Bt棉的杀虫活性显著低于CpTI-Bt棉,其幼虫死亡率与对照受体棉中16的死亡率之间无显著差异,仅显著抑制了幼虫的生长;石远321(SGK321受体品系)的花瓣具有一定的抗虫活性,可显著降低取食幼虫的体重,甚至造成部分幼虫死亡; CpTI-Bt棉中,花瓣和棉叶的抗虫性明显高于蕾和铃心。对5龄幼虫取食棉铃1日后的营养指标测定结果显示: 两种转基因抗虫棉处理的幼虫相对生长率和相对取食量均显著低于石远321,但两者之间无显著差异; CpTI-Bt棉处理的幼虫近似消化率显著低于石远321和Bt棉,但其食物利用率显著高于石远321和Bt棉。  相似文献
