Phytoplankton samples were collected from three mesotrophic lakes: Piaseczno, Rogóźno and Krasne during winter seasons (from January to March). The samples were analyzed for species analysis and abundance of planktonic algae in relation to different depths of water column (0–7 m). Selected water physical-chemical parameters were also measured. Abundance of phytoplankton depended strongly on the thickness of snow and ice cover or mixing conditions. The maximal phytoplankton total number reached about 5 × 106 ind. L−1 beneath the clear ice in the Krasne Lake, minimal numbers were recorded under the thick snow and ice layers in the Piaseczno Lake (2 × 103 ind. L−1). The winter phytoplankton communities were dominated by flagellates principally cryptomonads (Cryptomonas spp. Rhodomonas minuta), euglenophytes (Trachelomonas volvocina, T. volvocinopsis), dinoflagellates (Peridinium bipes, Gymnodinium helveticum) and chrysophytes (Mallomonas elongata, M. akrokomos, Dinobryon sociale) or non-motile small species of blue-green algae (e.g. Rhabdoderma lineare, Limnothrix redekei), diatoms (Stephanodiscus spp., Asterionella formosa), and green algae (e.g. Scenedesmus spp., Monoraphidium spp.). Phytoplankton abundance and structure showed differentiation during the winter season and along the water column as well.  相似文献

Acidic mining lakes (ML) in Lusatia (Germany) are characterised by their geogenically determined chemistry. The present study describes the structure, main components and relationships within the food webs of three acidic mining lakes with different pH values (ML 111: pH 2.6; ML 117: pH 2.8; ML Felix: pH 3.6) in order to show their typical characteristics. The investigation covered the period 1995–1997. The number of species and the biomass are both low, but increase with increasing pH. Planktonic components in the most acidic ML 111 (pH 2.6–2.9) comprise bacteria, Ochromonas spp. and Chlamydomonas spp. and a few rotifers (E. worallii, C. hoodi). Heliozoans are the top-predators. In ML 117 (pH 2.8–3) Gymnodinium sp., ciliates, the rotifer B. sericus and the pioneer crustacean Chydorus sphaericus join the pelagial community. Heliozoans were not found in ML 117 or ML Felix (pH 3.4–3.8). ML Felix had the most taxa. The benthic food chain of all three lakes includes phytobenthic algae as producers, chironomids as primary consumers and corixids as top predators in the profundal. Corixids predate on small cladocerans inhabiting the pelagial in lakes with a pH above 2.8 such as ML Felix. They invade the pelagial and act as a connecting link between the benthic and the pelagic food chains, which are isolated in lakes with a lower pH. Occasionally primary producers and consumers were abundant in all three lakes. These organisms do not depend on the degree of acidity, but on the availability of essential ressources. Mass variations covered up any seasonal variation in the extremely acidic ML 111 (0.9 mm3 l–1), while in the other two lakes seasonal patterns of biomass were found.  相似文献

There are three Northeast Pacific Rivers still supporting spawning populations of green sturgeon, Acipenser medirostris, but all have been modified hydrologically and thermally by dam construction. Age 1- to 3-year-old green sturgeon, progeny of artificially spawned, wild-caught Klamath River adults, were used to assess the effects of temperature and carbon dioxide on critical hematological parameters related to evolutionary adaptations of this species to its physical environment. In vitro measurement of the effect of temperature and carbon dioxide on blood–oxygen affinity and equilibrium curve shape yielded the following data for the respective temperature treatments (11, 15, 19, and 24°C): half-saturation values (P50’s, kPa, a measure of affinity) 1.26, 1.44, 1.63, 1.69 for low-PCO2 treatments and 2.08, 2.41, 2.74, 2.94 for high-PCO2 treatments; Bohr factors −0.322, −0.327, −0.366, −0.536; and non-bicarbonate buffer values (slykes) −6, −3, −5, −8. Temperature sensitivities (ΔH, kJ mol O2−1) between these respective temperatures were −34.20, −15.24, −6.74 for low-PCO2 treatments and −20.05, −27.00, and −11.55 for the high-PCO2 treatments. These data suggest that juvenile green sturgeon may tolerate moderate environmental hypoxia, moderate aerobic activity, low to moderate hypercapnia, and moderate temperature changes in their environments.  相似文献

Purpose

We present experiences and reflections from social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) case study, the aim of which was to identify social hotspots, test and evaluate the methodology and propose improvements. This paper discusses the usability and applicability of the methodology used based on our experiences from the study. The main issues considered are whether the gathering of data and other information is feasible and straightforward to perform, whether the method provides added value and relevant results and how these can be presented.

Method

We have conducted a generic hotspot assessment on a laptop computer according to the Guidelines for Social Life Cycle Assessment of Products (Benoît and Mazijn 2009). The experiences presented were gathered throughout the case study. The supply chain of the laptop was simplified, and we focused on a limited number of materials. The impacts were assessed in relation to the area of protection on human well-being and to affected stakeholders. Social impacts from the actual use of the product were not included. Methodological sheets were used for guidance on inventory indicators and data sources for data collection. Country-specific data were collected and entered into a spreadsheet. The process has been guided by regular meetings in a reference group, composed of representatives of all stakeholder groups.

Results and discussion

The data collection process was impaired by a lack of data and low data quality. In order to relate the data collected to the product assessed, each country's share of the activity performed in each phase was determined, and the activity percentage was calculated. In order to consider and relate all the phases in the product system, we used an estimated activity variable due to the lack of data. We developed a new approach to impact assessment. By determining the combination of the most extensive activity, as well as the most negative in the range of possible values for involved countries, we identified the hotspots. The results were not further aggregated in order to promote transparency.

Conclusions

We found the S-LCA methodology to be feasible and useful. By handling all relevant issues within one study using a systems perspective on the product life cycle, knowledge can be gained. However, there are still some major challenges. The definition of relevant indicators, data availability, impact pathways, activity variables, results presentation and possible aggregation, the handling of stakeholder context and the restricted assessment of the use phase were identified as major issues to deal with in further studies. Communication, and hence use of the results, is a crucial issue to enable the outcome of a study to result in actions that actually improve human well-being.  相似文献

Substance flow across the water–air boundary on the floodplain Lake Holodnoe (Saratov oblast) is generally formed by the Culicomorpha (76.1%) and accounts for 0.35 g/m2 of the lake area per year. The energy flow amounts to 1.87 kcal/m2, and most of it accounts for the second half of summer and autumn. Annual removal of biogenic elements is 0.18 g/m2 for carbon, 0.04 g/m2 for nitrogen, and 0.004 g/m2 for phosphorus. The greatest contribution to flows of substance and energy is brought by large species of chironomids, as well as chaoborids and medium-sized chironomids, which produce several generations within a year and reach high abundance at a larval stage. Other floodplain lakes of the Volga River with similar biotopical features and species composition of amphibiotic insects are characterized by a quantitatively similar level of exchange processes with adjacent land ecosystems across the water–air boundary.  相似文献

A new locally produced P-inactivation agent, Z2G1, was tested on sediment cores from Lake Okaro, New Zealand, for phosphorus (P) removal efficacy and any non-target side effects prior to a whole lake trial to manage internal P loading. Z2G1 is a granular product which settles rapidly, and was designed as a sediment capping material. It is a modified zeolite which acts as a carrier for the aluminium (Al)-based P-binding agent. It was found to have a high affinity for P and did not release Al into the water column. Continuous-flow incubation study results showed that a thin layer of Z2G1 (~2 mm) could completely block the release of P from the sediment under aerobic and anoxic conditions, and remove P from the overlying water in contact with the capping layer. The Z2G1 capping layer neither released metals itself nor did it induce the release of metals from the sediments, and the zeolite substrate absorbed arsenic and mercury from the geothermally influenced Lake Okaro sediments. In general, zeolites are strong cation absorbers and the zeolite substrate of Z2G1 absorbed ammoniacal nitrogen, making it the only sediment capping material to actively remove both P and N. There were, however, indications of a suppression effect on microbial denitrification by the Z2G1 capping layer under aerobic conditions. Overall, the Z2G1 sediment capping material is a highly effective P-inactivation agent which might be a useful material for managing internal P loads in eutrophic lakes.  相似文献

Despite over 100 years of phytoplankton research in the Baltic Sea, little is known about how the species composition has changed during this period, characterised by severe anthropogenic eutrophication. We investigated the phytoplankton communities in the northern Baltic Sea using data from 1903 to 1911 and 1993 to 2005; to minimise effects of methodological differences we focused on occurrence frequencies. We found that the historical and modern communities differed regarding both species composition and the relative importance of taxonomical groups. The most obvious differences were the increase of dinoflagellates and decrease in the diatom to dinoflagellate ratio in all seasons. Contrary to the widely held view that cyanophytes have gained significance, our results indicate that in terms of occurrence the group has not increased in summer, and has lost ground in both spring and autumn. Several shifts in the occurrence frequency and seasonality of individual taxa transpired. Examining our results in relation to environmental conditions we found that some changes may be symptomatic of climate change related pressures. However, statistical analyses revealed that an undefined ‘period effect’ was the most important factor separating the historical and modern phytoplankton communities. We interpret this ‘period effect’ as evidence for the direct and/or indirect influence of eutrophication.  相似文献

Invasive plants dramatically shift the structure of native wetland communities. However, less is known about how they affect belowground soil properties, and how those effects can vary depending on time since invasion. We hypothesized that invasion of a wetland by a widespread invasive plant (Typha × glauca) would result in changes in soil nutrients, denitrification, and bacterial communities, and that these effects would increase with time since invasion. We tested these hypotheses by sampling Typha-invaded sites of different ages (~40, 20, and 13 years), a Typha-free, native vegetation site, and a restored site (previously invaded ~30–40 years ago) but that had Typha return within 2 years of the restoration. At each site, we measured Typha stem density, plant species richness, soil nutrients, denitrification rates, and the abundance and composition of bacterial denitrifier communities. All Typha-dominated sites had the least plant species richness regardless of time since invasion. Additionally, sites that were invaded the longest exhibited significantly higher concentrations of soil organic matter, nitrate, and ammonium than the native site. In contrast, denitrification was higher in sites invaded more recently. Denitrifier diversity for the nirS gene was also significantly different, with highest nirS diversity in sites invaded the longest. Interestingly, the denitrifier communities within the restored site were most similar to the ones in T. × glauca sites, suggesting a legacy effect. Our study suggests this invader can alter important ecosystem properties, such as native species richness, nutrient pools, and transformations, as well as bacterial community composition depending on time since invasion.  相似文献

Inclusion of legume in grass pastures optimizes protein values of the forage and promotes improved digestibility. Therefore, we hypothesized that finishing steers on a novel combination of legumes and grass pasture would produce carcasses with acceptable traits when compared to carcasses from steers finished in feedlot systems. In this study, we evaluated the effects of finishing steers on three systems including: grazing legume–grass pasture containing oats, ryegrass, white and red clover (PAST), grazing PAST plus supplementation with whole corn grain (14 g/kg BW (SUPP)), and on a feedlot-confined system with concentrate only (28 g/kg BW, consisting of 850 g/kg of whole corn grain and 150 g/kg of protein–mineral–vitamin supplement (GRAIN)) on growth performance of steers, carcass traits and digestive disorders. Eighteen steers were randomly assigned to one of three dietary treatments and finished for 91 days. Data regarding pasture and growth performance were collected during three different periods (0 to 28, 29 to 56 and 57 to 91 days). Subsequently, steers were harvested to evaluate carcass traits, presence of rumenitis, abomasitis and liver abscesses. The legume–grass pasture provided more than 19% dry matter of protein. In addition, pasture of paddocks where steers were assigned to SUPP and PAST treatments showed similar nutritional quality. When compared to PAST, finishing on SUPP increased total weight gain per hectare, stocking rate, daily and total weight gains. The increase of weight gain was high to GRAIN than SUPP and PAST. Steers finished on GRAIN had high hot carcass weight, fat thickness and marbling score when compared to PAST. However, these attributes did not differ between GRAIN and SUPP. Abomasum lesions were more prevalent in steers finished on GRAIN when compared to PAST. Results of this research showed that it is possible to produce carcasses with desirable market weight and fat thickness by finishing steers on legume–grass pasture containing oats, ryegrass, white and red clover. Moreover, supplementing steers with corn when grazing on legume–grass pasture produced similar carcass traits when compared to beef fed corn only.  相似文献

Patients with respiratory diseases or anxiety frequently complain about dyspnea, which may be partly related to chronic tension of respiratory muscles and/or dynamic hyperinflation. In two experiments we tested a biofeedback technique that recorded electromyographic (EMG) activity from a bipolar surface electrode placement over the right external intercostal muscles with visual signal feedback. Healthy participants were tested in their ability to alter the signal. Heart rate was measured continuously throughout training trials. In the second experiment, dyspnea was rated on a modified Borg scale after each trial. Participants were able to increase their EMG activity considerably while heart rate and dyspnea increased substantially. Changes in EMG activity were achieved mostly by manipulating accessory muscle tension and/or altering breathing pattern. Thus, the technique is capable of altering respiratory muscle tension and associated dyspnea. Further studies may test the procedure as a relaxation technique in patients with respiratory disease or anxiety.  相似文献

Anthropogenic climate change poses substantial challenges to biodiversity conservation. Well‐documented responses include phenological and range shifts, and declines in cold but increases in warm‐adapted species. Thus, some species will suffer while others will benefit from ongoing change, although the biological features determining the prospects of a given species under climate change are largely unknown. By comparing three related butterfly species of different vulnerability to climate change, we show that stress tolerance during early development may be of key importance. The arguably most vulnerable species showed the strongest decline in egg hatching success under heat and desiccation stress, and similar pattern also for hatchling mortality. Research, especially on insects, is often focussed on the adult stage only. Thus, collating more data on stress tolerance in different life stages will be of crucial importance for enhancing our abilities to predict the fate of particular species and populations under ongoing climate change.  相似文献

Biotic and abiotic factors can influence interactions between microbial grazers and their prey, thus impacting both the cycling of biogenic carbon within the surface layer of the ocean and the export of carbon to the deep ocean and higher trophic levels. In this study, microcosm experiments were used to evaluate the combined effect of temperature and turbulence on the growth rate of a marine bacterium (Vibrio splendidus), a protistan predator (Paraphysomonas sp.), and the community grazing impact of Paraphysomonas sp. on V. splendidus. It was found that the artificial turbulence generated (1.35 × 10−1 cm2 s−3) significantly increased the rates of growth of Paraphysomonas sp. at high (>10°C), but not low (<5°C) temperatures, and that turbulence had no effect on the growth of V. splendidus. Both flagellate and bacterial growth were temperature dependent and decreased 4- to 6-fold as temperatures decreased from 15 to 0°C. Bacterial grazing mortality by Paraphysomonas sp. was 1.3- to 2.5-fold greater in the turbulent than static treatments among all four temperatures, and the rates of cell-specific ingestion of bacteria by Paraphysomonas sp. was 2-fold greater at 15 and 10°C in the turbulent than in the static treatment. Hence, this study shows that turbulence can influence nanoflagellate grazing at temperatures >5°C and suggests that at low temperatures, increased viscosity may limit the size of organisms that can be affected by small-scale turbulence.Present address (M.P. Aims: Recent studies have shown that artificial addition of biochar is an effective way to mitigate atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. However, it is still unclear how biochar addition influences soil respiration in Phyllostachys edulis forests of subtropical China. Our objectives were to examine the effects of biochar addition on the dynamics of soil respiration, soil temperature, soil moisture, and the cumulative soil carbon emission, and to determine the relationships of soil respiration with soil temperature and moisture. Methods: We conducted a two-year biochar addition experiment in a subtropical P. edulis forest from 2014.05 to 2016.04. The study site is located in the Miaoshanwu Nature Reserve in Fuyang district of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, in southern China. The biochar addition treatments included: control (CK, no biochar addition), low rate of biochar addition (LB, 5 t·hm-2), medium rate of biochar addition (MB, 10 t·hm-2), and high rate of biochar addition (HB, 20 t·hm-2). Soil respiration was measured by using a LI-8100 soil CO2 efflux system. Important findings: Soil respiration was significantly reduced by biochar addition, and exhibited an apparent seasonal pattern, with the maximum occurring in June or July (except LB in one of the replicated stand) and the minimum in January or February. There were significant differences in soil respiration between the CK and the treatments. Annual mean soil respiration rate in the CK, LB, MB and HB were 3.32, 2.66, 3.04 and 3.24 μmol·m-2·s-1, respectively. Compared with CK, soil respiration rate was 2.33%-54.72% lower in the LB, 1.28%-44.21% lower in the MB, and 0.09%-39.22% lower in the HB. The soil moisture content was increased by 0.97%-75.58% in LB, 0.87%-48.18% in MB, and 0.68%-74.73% in HB, respectively, compared with CK. Soil respiration exhibited a significant exponential relationship with soil temperature and a significant linear relationship with combination of soil temperature and moisture at the depth of 5 cm; no significant relationship was found between soil respiration and soil moisture alone. The temperature sensitivity (Q10) value was reduced in LB and HB. Annual accumulative soil carbon emission in the LB, MB and HB was reduced by 7.98%-35.09%, 1.48%-20.63%, and -4.71%-7.68%, respectively. Biochar addition significantly reduced soil carbon emission and soil temperature sensitivity, highlighting its role in mitigating climate change.  相似文献

Proto-Kranz plants represent an initial phase in the evolution from C3 to C3–C4 intermediate to C4 plants. The ecological and adaptive aspects of C3–C4 plants would provide an important clue to understand the evolution of C3–C4 plants. We investigated whether growth temperature and nitrogen (N) nutrition influence the expression of C3–C4 traits in Chenopodium album (proto-Kranz) in comparison with Chenopodium quinoa (C3). Plants were grown during 5 weeks at 20 or 30 °C under standard or low N supply levels (referred to as 20SN, 20LN, 30SN, and 30LN). Net photosynthetic rate and leaf N content were higher in 20SN and 30SN plants than in 20LN and 30LN plants of C. album but did not differ among growth conditions in C. quinoa. The CO2 compensation point (Γ) of C. album was lowest in 30LN plants (36 µmol mol–1), highest in 20SN plants (51 µmol mol–1), and intermediate in 20LN and 30SN plants, whereas Γ of C. quinoa did not differ among the growth conditions (51–52 µmol mol–1). The anatomical structure of leaves was not considerably affected by growth conditions in either species. However, ultrastructural observations in C. album showed that the number of mitochondria per mesophyll or bundle sheath (BS) cell was lower in 20LN and 30LN plants than in 20SN and 30SN plants. Immunohistochemical observations revealed that lower accumulation level of P-protein of glycine decarboxylase (GDC-P) in mesophyll mitochondria than in BS mitochondria is the major factor causing the decrease in Γ values in C. album plants grown under low N supply and high temperature. These results suggest that high growth temperature and low N supply lead to the expression of C3–C4 traits (the reduction of Γ) in the proto-Kranz plants of C. album through the regulation of GDC-P expression.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) is explained by drug transporters with a drug-handling activity. Despite much work, MDR remains multifaceted, and several conditions are required to generate drug resistance. The drug pumping was conceptually described using a kinetic, i.e., temporal, approach. The re-emergence of physical biology has allowed us to take into account new parameters focusing on the notion of space. This, in turn, has given us important clues regarding the process whereby drug and transporter interact. We will demonstrate that the likelihood of drug-transporter meeting (i.e., the affinity) and thus interaction are also driven by the mechanical interaction between drug molecular weight (MW) and the membrane mechanical properties. This should allow us to mechanically control drug delivery.  相似文献

Amyloid-β peptide Aβ25–35 was shown to cause lysis of rat erythrocytes of different ages. The toxicity of Aβ25–35 positively correlated with both the erythrocyte age and the peptide concentration. The activity of glycolytic, antioxidant, and Na+/K+-ATPase enzymes decreased with erythrocyte aging in vivo. In vitro Aβ25–35 reduced the activity of hexokinase, phosphofructokinase, pyruvate kinase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione transferase and increased Na+/K+-ATPase activity in aged erythrocytes to a greater degree than in young cells.  相似文献

In songbirds, developmental stress affects song learning and production. Altered hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis function resulting in elevated corticosterone (CORT) may contribute to this effect. We examined whether developmental conditions affected the association between adult song and HPA axis function, and whether nutritional stress before and after nutritional independence has distinct effects on song learning and/or vocal performance. Zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) were raised in consistently high (HH) or low (LL) food conditions until post-hatch day (PHD) 62, or were switched from high to low conditions (HL) or vice versa (LH) at PHD 34. Song was recorded in adulthood. We assessed the response of CORT to handling during development and to dexamethasone (DEX) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) challenges during adulthood. Song learning and vocal performance were not affected by nutritional stress at either developmental stage. Nutritional stress elevated baseline CORT during development. Nutritional stress also increased rate of CORT secretion in birds that experienced stress only in the juvenile phase (HL group). Birds in the LL group had lower CORT levels after injection of ACTH compared to the other groups, however there was no effect of nutritional stress on the response to DEX. Thus, our findings indicate that developmental stress can affect HPA function without concurrently affecting song.  相似文献
