Environmental factors that shape dynamics of benthic toxic blooms are largely unknown. In particular, for the toxic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata, the importance of the availability of nutrients and the contribution of the inorganic and organic pools to growth need to be quantified in marine coastal environments. The present study aimed at characterizing N-uptake of dissolved inorganic and organic sources by O. cf. ovata cells, using the 15N-labelling technique. Experiments were conducted taking into account potential interactions between nutrient uptake systems as well as variations with the diel cycle. Uptake abilities of O. cf. ovata were parameterized for ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3) and N-urea, from the estimation of kinetic and inhibition parameters. In the range of 0 to 10 μmol N L−1, kinetic curves showed a clear preference pattern following the ranking NH4+ > NO3 > N-urea, where the preferential uptake of NH4+ relative to NO3 was accentuated by an inhibitory effect of NH4+ concentration on NO3 uptake capabilities. Conversely, under high nutrient concentrations, the preference for NH4+ relative to NO3 was largely reduced, probably because of the existence of a low-affinity high capacity inducible NO3 uptake system. Ability to take up nutrients in darkness could not be defined as a competitive advantage for O. cf. ovata. Species competitiveness can also be defined from nutrient uptake kinetic parameters. A strong affinity for NH4+ was observed for O. cf. ovata cells that may partly explain the success of this toxic species during the summer season in the Bay of Villefranche-sur-mer (France).  相似文献

The effects of NH4+ or NO3 on growth, resource allocation and nitrogen (N) uptake kinetics of two common helophytes Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel and Glyceria maxima (Hartm.) Holmb. were studied in semi steady-state hydroponic cultures. At a steady-state nitrogen availability of 34 μM the growth rate of Phragmites was not affected by the N form (mean RGR = 35.4 mg g−1 d−1), whereas the growth rate of Glyceria was 16% higher in NH4+-N cultures than in NO3-N cultures (mean = 66.7 and 57.4 mg g−1 d−1 of NH4+ and NO3 treated plants, respectively). Phragmites and Glyceria had higher S/R ratio in NH4+ cultures than in NO3 cultures, 123.5 and 129.7%, respectively.Species differed in the nitrogen utilisation. In Glyceria, the relative tissue N content was higher than in Phragmites and was increased in NH4+ treated plants by 16%. The tissue NH4+ concentration (mean = 1.6 μmol g fresh wt−1) was not affected by N treatment, whereas NO3 contents were higher in NO3 (mean = 1.5 μmol g fresh wt−1) than in NH4+ (mean = 0.4 μmol g fresh wt−1) treated plants. In Phragmites, NH4+ (mean = 1.6 μmol g fresh wt−1) and NO3 (mean = 0.2 μmol g fresh wt−1) contents were not affected by the N regime. Species did not differ in NH4+ (mean = 56.5 μmol g−1 root dry wt h−1) and NO3 (mean = 34.5 μmol g−1 root dry wt h−1) maximum uptake rates (Vmax), and Vmax for NH4+ uptake was not affected by N treatment. The uptake rate of NO3 was low in NH4+ treated plants, and an induction phase for NO3 was observed in NH4+ treated Phragmites but not in Glyceria. Phragmites had low Km (mean = 4.5 μM) and high affinity (10.3 l g−1 root dry wt h−1) for both ions compared to Glyceria (Km = 6.3 μM, affinity = 8.0 l g−1 root dry wt h−1). The results showed different plasticity of Phragmites and Glyceria toward N source. The positive response to NH4+-N source may participates in the observed success of Glyceria at NH4+ rich sites, although other factors have to be considered. Higher plasticity of Phragmites toward low nutrient availability may favour this species at oligotrophic sites.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial variability in the kinetic parameters of uptake of nitrate (NO3), ammonium (NH4+), urea, and glycine was measured during dinoflagellate blooms in Changjiang River estuary and East China Sea coast, 2005. Karenia mikimotoi was the dominant species in the early stage of the blooms and was succeeded by Prorocentrum donghaiense. The uptake of nitrogen (N) was determined using 15N tracer techniques. The results of comparison kinetic parameters with ambient nutrients confirmed that different N forms were preferentially taken up during different stages of the bloom. NO3 (Vmax 0.044 h−1; Ks 60.8 μM-N) was an important N source before it was depleted. NH4+ (Vmax 0.049 h−1; Ks 2.15 μM-N) was generally the preferred N. Between the 2 organic N sources, urea was more preferred when K. mikimotoi dominated the bloom (Vmax 0.020 h−1; Ks 1.35 μM-N) and glycine, considered as a dominant amino acid, was more preferred when P. donghaiense dominated the bloom (Vmax 0.025 h−1; Ks 1.76 μM-N). The change of N uptake preference by the bloom-forming algae was also related to the variation in ambient N concentrations.  相似文献

The uptake rates of different nitrogen (N) forms (NO3, urea, and the amino acids glycine and glutamic acid) by N-deficient, laboratory-grown cells of the mixotrophic haptophyte, Prymnesium parvum, were measured and the preference by the cells for the different forms determined. Cellular N uptake rates (ρcell, fmol N cell−1 h−1) were measured using 15N-labeled N substrates. P. parvum showed high preference for the tested amino acids, in particular glutamic acid, over urea and NO3 under the culture nutrient conditions. However, extrapolating these rates to Baltic Seawater summer conditions, P. parvum would be expected to show higher uptake rates of NO3 and the amino acids relative to urea because of the difference in average concentrations of these substrates. A high uptake rate of glutamic acid at low substrate concentrations suggests that this substrate is likely used through extracellular enzymes. Nitrate, urea and glycine, on the other hand, showed a non-saturating uptake over the tested substrate concentration (1–40 μM-N for NO3 and urea, 0.5–10 μM-N for glycine), indicating slower membrane-transport rates for these substrates.  相似文献

This study represents the most comprehensive assessment of kinetic parameters for Karenia brevis to date as it encompasses natural populations sampled during three different bloom years in addition to cultured strains under controlled conditions. Nitrogen (N) uptake kinetics for ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3), urea, an amino acid mixture, individual amino acids (glutamate and alanine), and humic substrates were examined for the toxic red tide dinoflagellate, K. brevis, during short term incubations (0.5–1 h) using 15N tracer techniques. Experiments were conducted using natural populations collected during extensive blooms along the West Florida Shelf in October 2001, 2002, and 2007, and in cultured strains (CCFWC 251 and CCFWC 267) obtained from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Institute culture collection. Kinetic parameters for the maximum uptake velocity (Vmax), half-saturation concentration (Ks), and the affinity constant (α) were determined. The affinity constant is considered a more accurate indicator of substrate affinity at low concentrations. K. brevis took up all organic substrates tested, including N derived from humic substances. Uptake rates of the amino acid mixture and some NO3 incubations did not saturate even at the highest substrate additions (50–200 μmol N L−1). Based upon the calculated α values, the greatest substrate preference was for NH4+ followed by NO3  urea, humic compounds and amino acids. The ability of K. brevis to utilize a variety of inorganic and organic substrates likely helps it flourish under a wide range of nutrient conditions from bloom initiation in oligotrophic waters offshore to bloom maintenance near shore where ambient nutrient concentrations may be orders of magnitude greater.  相似文献

The West Florida Shelf (WFS) encompasses a range of environments from inshore estuarine to offshore oligotrophic waters, which are frequently the site of large and persistent blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis. The goals of this study were to characterize the nitrogen (N) nutrition of plankton across the range of environmental conditions on the WFS, to quantify the percentage of the plankton N demand met through in situ N regeneration, and to determine whether planktonic N nutrition changes when high concentrations of Karenia are present. In the fall of 2007, 2008, and 2009 we measured ambient nutrient concentrations and used stable isotope techniques to measure rates of primary production and uptake rates of inorganic N (ammonium, NH4+, and nitrate, NO3), and organic N and carbon (C; urea and amino acids, AA) in estuarine, coastal, and offshore waters, as well as coastal sites with Karenia blooms present. In parallel, we also measured rates of in situ N regeneration – NH4+ regeneration, nitrification, and photoproduction of NH4+, nitrite and AA. Based on microscope observations, ancillary measurements, and previous monitoring history, Karenia blooms sampled represented three bloom stages – initiation in 2008, maintenance in 2007, and late maintenance/stationary phase in 2009. Nutrient concentrations were highest at estuarine sampling sites and lowest at offshore sites. Uptake of NH4+ and NO3 provided the largest contribution to N nutrition at all sites. At the non-Karenia sites, in situ rates of NH4+ regeneration and nitrification were generally sufficient to supply these substrates equal to the rates at which they were taken up. At Karenia sites, NO3 was the most important N substrate during the initiation phase, while NH4+ was the most important N form used during bloom maintenance and stationary phases. Rates of NH4+ regeneration were high but insufficient (85 ± 36% of uptake) to support the measured NH4+ uptake at all the Karenia sites although nitrification rates far exceeded uptake rates of NO3. Taken together our results support the “no smoking gun” nutrient hypothesis that there is no single nutrient source or strategy that can explain Karenia's frequent dominance in the waters where it occurs. Consistent with other papers in this volume, our results indicate that Karenia can utilize an array of inorganic and organic N forms from a number of N sources.  相似文献

The responses of soil-atmosphere carbon (C) exchange fluxes to growing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition are controversial, leading to large uncertainty in the estimated C sink of global forest ecosystems experiencing substantial N inputs. However, it is challenging to quantify critical load of N input for the alteration of the soil C fluxes, and what factors controlled the changes in soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes under N enrichment. Nine levels of urea addition experiment (0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140 kg N ha−1 yr−1) were conducted in the needle-broadleaved mixed forest in Changbai Mountain, Northeast China. Soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes were monitored weekly using the static chamber and gas chromatograph technique. Environmental variables (soil temperature and moisture in the 0–10 cm depth) and dissolved N (NH4+-N, NO3-N, total dissolved N (TDN), and dissolved organic N (DON)) in the organic layer and the 0–10 cm mineral soil layer were simultaneously measured. High rates of N addition (≥60 kg N ha−1 yr−1) significantly increased soil NO3-N contents in the organic layer and the mineral layer by 120%-180% and 56.4%-84.6%, respectively. However, N application did not lead to a significant accumulation of soil NH4+-N contents in the two soil layers except for a few treatments. N addition at a low rate of 10 kg N ha−1 yr−1 significantly stimulated, whereas high rate of N addition (140 kg N ha−1 yr−1) significantly inhibited soil CO2 emission and CH4 uptake. Significant negative relationships were observed between changes in soil CO2 emission and CH4 uptake and changes in soil NO3-N and moisture contents under N enrichment. These results suggest that soil nitrification and NO3-N accumulation could be important regulators of soil CO2 emission and CH4 uptake in the temperate needle-broadleaved mixed forest. The nonlinear responses to exogenous N inputs and the critical level of N in terms of soil C fluxes should be considered in the ecological process models and ecosystem management.  相似文献

The biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen (N) and base cations (BCs), (i.e., K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+), play critical roles in plant nutrition and ecosystem function. Empirical correlations between large experimental N fertilizer additions to forest ecosystems and increased BCs loss in stream water are well demonstrated, but the mechanisms driving this coupling remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that protons generated through N transformation (PPRN)—quantified as the balance of NH4+ (H+ source) and NO3 (H+ sink) in precipitation versus the stream output will impact BCs loss in acid-sensitive ecosystems. To test this hypothesis, we monitored precipitation input and stream export of inorganic N and BCs for three years in an acid-sensitive forested watershed in a granite area of subtropical China. We found the precipitation input of inorganic N (17.71 kg N ha−1 year−1 with 54% as NH4+–N) was considerably higher than stream exported inorganic N (5.99 kg N ha−1 year−1 with 83% as NO3–N), making the watershed a net N sink. The stream export of BCs (151, 1518, 851, and 252 mol ha−1 year−1 for K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+, respectively) was positively correlated (r = 0.80, 0.90, 0.84, and 0.84 for K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ on a monthly scale, respectively, P < 0.001, n = 36) with PPRN (389 mol ha−1 year−1) over the three years, suggesting that PPRN drives loss of BCs in the acid-sensitive ecosystem. A global meta-analysis of 15 watershed studies from non-calcareous ecosystems further supports this hypothesis by showing a similarly strong correlation between ∑BCs output and PPRN (r = 0.89, P < 0.001, n = 15), in spite of the pronounced differences in environmental settings. Collectively, our results suggest that N transformations rather than anions (NO3 and/or SO42−) leaching specifically, are an important mediator of BCs loss in acid-senstive ecosystems. Our study provides the first definitive evidence that the chronic N deposition and subsequent transformation within the watershed drive stream export of BCs through proton production in acid-sensitive ecosystems, irrespective of their current relatively high N retention. Our findings suggest the N-transformation-based proton production can be used as an indicator of watershed outflow quality in the acid-sensitive ecosystems.  相似文献

The toxic HAB dinoflagellate Karenia brevis (Davis) G. Hansen & Ø. Moestrup (formerly Gymnodinium breve) exhibits a migratory pattern atypical of dinoflagellates: cells concentrate in a narrow (∼0–5 cm) band at the water surface during daylight hours due to phototactic and negative geotactic responses, then disperse downward at night via non-tactic, random swimming. The hypothesis that this daylight surface aggregation behavior significantly influences bacterial and algal productivity and nutrient cycling within blooms was tested during a large, high biomass (chlorophyll a >19 μg L−1) K. brevis bloom in October of 2001 by examining the effects of this surface layer aggregation on inorganic and organic nutrient concentrations, cellular nitrogen uptake, primary and bacterial productivity and the stable isotopic signature (δ15N, δ13C) of particulate material. During daylight hours, concentrations of K. brevis and chlorophyll a in the 0–5 cm surface layer were enhanced by 131% (±241%) and 32.1% (±86.1%) respectively compared with an integrated water sample collection over a 0–1 m depth. Inorganic (NH4, NO3+2, PO4, SiO4) and organic (DOP, DON) nutrient concentrations were also elevated within the surface layer as was both bacterial and primary productivity. Uptake of nitrogen (NH4+, NO3, urea, dissolved primary amines, glutamine and alanine) compounds by K. brevis was greatest in the surface layer for all compounds tested, with the greatest enhancement evident in urea uptake rates, from 0.08 × 10−5 ng N K. brevis cell−1 h−1 to 3.1 × 10−5 ng N K. brevis cell−1 h−1. These data suggests that this surface aggregation layer is not only an area of concentrated cells within K. brevis blooms, but also an area of increased biological activity and nutrient cycling, especially of nitrogen. Additionally, the classic dinoflagellate migration paradigm of a downward migration for access to elevated NO3 concentrations during the dark period may not apply to certain dinoflagellates such as K. brevis in oligotrophic nearshore areas with no significant nitricline. For these dinoflagellates, concentration within a narrow surface layer in blooms during daylight hours may enhance nutrient supply through biological cycling and photochemical nutrient regeneration.  相似文献

A comparative study to produce the correct influent for Anammox process from anaerobic sludge reject water (700–800 mg NH4+-N L−1) was considered here. The influent for the Anammox process must be composed of NH4+-N and NO2-N in a ratio 1:1 and therefore only a partial nitrification of ammonium to nitrite is required. The modifications of parameters (temperature, ammonium concentration, pH and solid retention time) allows to achieve this partial nitrification with a final effluent only composed by NH4+-N and NO2-N at the right stoichiometric ratio. The equal ratio of HCO3/NH4+ in reject water results in a natural pH decrease when approximately 50% of NH4+ is oxidised. A Sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and a chemostat type of reactor (single-reactor high activity ammonia removal over nitrite (SHARON) process) were studied to obtain the required Anammox influent. At steady state conditions, both systems had a specific conversion rate around 40 mg NH4+-N g−1 volatile suspended solids (VSS) h−1, but in terms of absolute nitrogen removal the SBR conversion was 1.1 kg N day−1 m−3, whereas in the SHARON chemostat was 0.35 kg N day−1 m−3 due to the different hydraulic retention time (HRT) used. Both systems are compared from operational (including starvation experiments) and kinetic point of view and their advantages/disadvantages are discussed.  相似文献

While increased nutrient concentrations and eutrophication are recognized to be among the causative factors contributing to algal blooms, including harmful algal blooms (HABs), relationships between nutrient fluxes and specific blooms are often not well defined or understood. In an attempt to better decipher these relationships, we employed in situ nutrient monitors to collect time-series data to document variability ranging from hourly to monthly, including rain events and the resulting response of phytoplankton biomass. Multiple deployments are reported here, all conducted in tributaries of Chesapeake Bay. The suite of nutrients that were monitored varied with deployment; examples given here include nitrate + nitrite (NO3 + NO2), ammonium (NH4+), phosphate (PO43−), and urea. Common features in the data included highly varying concentrations on time-scales of a few hours related to tidal oscillations, and longer-term responses on the scale of days related to rainfall events. Increases following rainfall events for all nutrients generally tended to be many fold, up to an order of magnitude, higher than pre-rainfall concentrations. However, the time scale of response to rainfall for individual nutrients varied. Ephemeral increases in PO43− and urea typically were contemporaneous with rain events, and were also followed by longer-term sustained increases relative to pre-rainfall levels. Increases in NO3 + NO2 and NH4+ lagged rainfall events by a period of several days and generally lasted for several days. These dynamics generally would be missed by traditional manual sampling. Algal responses tended to follow the increases in nitrogen, underscoring nitrogen limitation in these systems even when ambient concentrations were not depleted.  相似文献

Nitrogen form has been shown to affect Zn uptake, translocation and storage in the Zn-hyperaccumulating plant Noccaea caerulescens but the biochemical processes are not fully understood. Organic acids and amino acids have been implicated in Zn transport and storage. This study aimed to examine the effect of N form on concentrations of organic acids and amino acids and how these metabolites correlated with Zn hyperaccumulation. Plants were grown in nutrient solution with NO3, NH4NO3 or NH4+, supplied with 50 or 300 μM Zn, and buffered at either pH 4.5 or 6.5. The metabolomic profile was determined by gas chromatography mass spectroscopy. The concentration of Zn in shoots, xylem and roots was greatest for the NO3, pH 6.5 and 300 μM Zn treatments. For all N forms, the lower growth-medium pH raised xylem sap pH but had no influence on Zn concentration or exudation rate of the xylem sap. Nitrate enhanced organic acid production while NH4+ increased amino acid production. Organic acids in the xylem were more responsive to changes in growth-medium pH than N form, and did not correlate with Zn concentration in shoots, roots or xylem. Serine might be directly involved in Zn hyperaccumulation. Phosphoric acid was associated with reduced Zn accumulation in the shoots. Malic acid was not detected in the shoots but responded to cation uptake more than to Zn specifically in the roots. Citric acid responded to cation uptake more than to Zn specifically in the shoots but did not correlate with Zn concentration in the roots or the xylem sap, or any other cations in the roots. In conclusion, organic acids in N. caerulescens are not specifically involved in Zn hyperaccumulation but are involved in regulating pH in the xylem and cation–anion balance in plants.  相似文献

The effect of NH4+/NO3 availability on nitrate reductase (NR) activity in Phragmites australis and Glyceria maxima was studied in sand and water cultures with the goal to characterise the relationship between NR activity and NO3 availability in the rhizosphere and to describe the extent to which NH4+ suppresses the utilization of NO3 in wetland plants. The NR activity data showed that both wetland helophytes are able to utilize NO3. This finding was further supported by sufficient growth observed under the strict NO3 nutrition. The distribution of NR activity within plant tissues differed between species. Phragmites was proved to be preferential leaf NO3 reducer with high NR activity in leaves (NRmax > 6.5 μmol NO2 g dry wt−1 h−1) under all N treatments, and therefore Phragmites seems to be good indicator of NO3 availability in flooded sediment. In the case of Glyceria the contribution of roots to plant NO3 reduction was higher, especially in sand culture. Glyceria also tended to accumulate NO3 in non-reduced form, showing generally lower leaf NR activity levels. Thus, the NR activity does not necessarily correspond with plant ability to take up NO3 and grow under NO3-N source. Moreover, the species differed significantly in the content of compounds interfering with NR activity estimation. Glyceria, but not Phragmites, contained cyanogenic glycosides releasing cyanide, the potent NR inhibitor. It clearly shows that the use of NR activity as a marker of NO3 utilization in individual plant species is impossible without the precise method optimisation.  相似文献

The South Nation River Watershed, in eastern Ontario, Canada, is an agricultural watershed impacted by excess nutrient loading primarily from agricultural activities. A constructed wetland for the treatment of agricultural wastewater from a 150-cow dairy operation in this watershed was monitored in its eighth operating season to evaluate the proportion of total nitrogen (TN) (approximated by total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) due to low NO3) and total phosphorus (TP) removal that could be attributed to storage in Typha latifolia L. and Typha angustifolia L., which dominate this system. Nutrient loading rates were high, with 16.2 kg ha−1 d−1 N and 3.4 kg ha−1 d−1 P entering the wetland and loading the first wetland cell. Plant uptake accounted for 0.7% of TKN removal when the vegetated free water surface cells were considered together. However, separately, in the second wetland cell with lower N and P loading rates, plants accounted for 9% of TKN, 21% of NH4+ and 5% of TP removal. Plant uptake was significant to overall removal given wetland age and nutrient loading. Nutrient storage during the growing season at this constructed wetland helped reduce the nutrient load entering the watershed, already stressed by intensive local agriculture.  相似文献

Snow meltwater containing 36 ng ml−1NO3-N (raised here to between 95–101 ng ml−1NO3-N) and 112 ng ml−1NH4+-N was sprayed onto illuminatedUsnea sphacelataat 2°C in a 2-1 capacity transparent perspex chamber force-ventilated with either air or O2- (and CO2-) free N2. The NO3-concentration in meltwater recirculated through a layer ofU. sphacelatafell toc. 8 ng ml−1after 1·25 h. Although the pattern of decline was broadly comparable in both air and N2, the initial rate of decline was lower in N2. When undepleted meltwater was continuously sprayed onto the lichen and the effluent collected for analysis, the lichen was found to retain 55% of the wet deposited NO3in air but only 27% under N2. Up to 90% of NH4+supplied in a continuous spray of meltwater was retained by the lichen but this was affected little by O2and CO2deprivation.  相似文献

Wetland cultivation and its effects on soil properties in salt marshes in the Yellow River Delta, China were examined by using a combination of the satellite imageries and field experiments. Results showed that the conversions mainly occurred between dry lands and Phragmites australis–Suaeda salsaTamarix chinensis marshes (PSTMs). The total area of marsh wetland was reduced by 65.09 km2 during the period from 1986 to 2005, and these conversions might be attributed to a combination of farming, oil exploration and water extraction, as well as soil salinization. Significant differences were observed in bulk density, pH, salinity and NO3-N between different land-use types (P < 0.05). After the conversions from marsh wetlands to dry lands, bulk density, pH, salinity and NH4+-N decreased slightly, while a significant increase in NO3-N, TN (total nitrogen), and AP (available phosphorus) (P < 0.05) was observed. The more loss of soil nutrient storage also occurred after the maximal area conversion from PSTMs to dry lands compared to other conversions during the study period. The storages of soil organic matter, NH4+-N and total phosphorus decreased greatly under the conversion from three types of marshes to dry lands, while those of NO3-N, AP and TN showed an obvious increase during the whole study period.  相似文献

15N-labelled NO3? was used in a surface-flow constructed wetland in spring to examine the relative importance of competing NO3? removal processes. In situ mesocosms (0.25 m2) were dosed with 2 l of 15NO3? (NaNO3, 300 mg N l?1, 99 atom% 15N) and bromide (Br?) solution (LiBr, 4.3 g l?1, as a conservative tracer). Concentrations of NO3?, Br?, dissolved oxygen and 15N2 were monitored periodically and replicate mesocosms were destructively sampled prior to and 6 days after 15N addition. Denitrification, immobilisation, plant uptake and dissimilatory NO3? reduction to NH4+ (DNRA) accounted for 77, 11, 9 and 2% of 15NO3? transformed during the experiment. Only 6% of denitrification gases were directly measured as atmospheric or dissolved 15N2; the remainder (71%) was determined via 15N mass balance. This indicated that a large proportion of the denitrification gases were entrapped within the soil matrix and/or plant aerenchyma. The floating plant Lemna minor exhibited a significantly higher NO3? uptake rate (221 mg kg?1 d?1) than Typha orientalis (10 mg kg?1 d?1), but periodic harvest of plants would remove <3% of annual NO3? inputs. Our results suggest that this 6-year-old constructed wetland functions effectively as a sink for NO3? during the growing season with less than one-quarter of the NO3? processed sequestered into wetland plant, algal and microbial N pools and the balance permanently removed by denitrification.  相似文献

The epiphytic lichen flora of 25 European ICP-IM monitoring sites, all situated in areas remote from air pollution sources, was statistically related to measured levels of SO2in air, NH4+, NO3 and SO42− in precipitation, annual bulk precipitation, and annual average temperature. Significant regression models were calculated for eleven acidophytic species. Several species show a strong negative correlation with nitrogen compounds. At concentrations as low as 0·3 mg N l−1in precipitation, a decrease of the probability of occurrence is observed for Bryoria capillaris, B. fuscescens, Cetraria pinastri, Imshaugia aleurites and Usnea hirta. The observed pattern of correlations strongly suggests a key role of NH4+ in determining the species occurrence, but an additional role of NO3 cannot be ruled out. Some species show a distinct response to current levels of SO2as well. It may be concluded that long distance nitrogen air pollution has strong influence on the occurrence of acidophytic lichen species.  相似文献

The effect of two nutrient solution temperatures (cold (10 °C) and warm (22 °C)) during two flowering events of rose plants (Rosa × hybrida cv. Grand Gala) were examined by measuring chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence, ammonium (NH4+) content and nitrate reductase (NR) activity in four different leaf types, that is, external and internal leaves of bent shoots and lower and upper leaves of flowering stems. Besides, nitrate (NO3?) uptake and water absorption, total nitrogen (N) concentration in the plant, dry biomass, and the ratios of shoot/root and thin-white roots/suberized-brown roots were determined. Generally, cold solution increased NO3? uptake and thin-white roots production but decreased water uptake, so plants grown at cold solution had to improve their NO3? uptake mechanisms to obtain a higher amount of nutrient with less water absorption than plants grown at warm solution. The higher NO3? uptake can be related to an increase in NR activity, NH4+ content and total N concentration at cold solution. Nutrient solution temperature also had an effect on the photosynthetic apparatus. In general terms, the effective quantum yield (?PSII) and the fraction of open PSII reaction centres (qL) were higher in rose plants grown at cold solution. These effects can be associated to a higher NO3? uptake and total N concentration in the plants and were modulated by irradiance throughout all the experiment. Plants could adapt to cold solution by enhancing their metabolism without a decrease in total dry biomass. Nevertheless, the effect of nutrient solution temperature is not simple and also affected by climatic factors.  相似文献
