The use of the term "commitment" by different authors was compared and the term itself was compared with the term "determination". Different authors understand the term "commitment" in different ways. It is proposed to preserve the terms "competence", "determination" (labile and stable) and "differentiation" in studies of normal development at stages preceding the appearance of organ rudiments in order to facilitate the use of the knowledge acquired by experimental embryology and to decipher these concepts at the molecular level. The meaning of the term "commitment" should be made more precise when describing the experimental results and also when assessing the results obtained by various authors and published in numerous papers and reviews.  相似文献

This article presents a review of the literature on the epidemiology and public health implications of Helicobacter pylori infection published from April 2008 through to March 2009. The authors used MeSH terms "Helicobacter infections epidemiology,""Helicobacter infections prevention and control" to search multiple databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Cochrane Library, EBMR, BIOSIS), and independently searched PubMed using the term "Helicobacter" with "Epidemiology,""Transmission,""Prevalence" or "Environment." Articles without topical relevance were excluded. Two additional papers known to the authors were added. The identified literature is summarized by subtopic: reviews; prevalence; incidence; transmission; risk factors; and public health policy.  相似文献

Recent changes in the aetiology and epidemiology of invasive candidiasis have serious implications for current and future diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. The aim of the current review was to discuss the epidemiology of invasive candidiasis, the distribution of Candida species in different regions of the world, the medical concerns of the changing aetiology and the emergence of antifungal resistance. Overall burden of invasive candidiasis remains high, especially in vulnerable persons, such as the elderly, immunosuppressed or debilitated patients. Moreover, there is a progressive shift in the aetiology of invasive candidiasis from Candida albicans to other species of Candida, probably related to the increased use of azole drugs with a clear trend towards increased antifungal resistance. Finally, the emergence and rise of multiresistant species, such as Candida auris or Candida glabrata, is a major threat making necessary invasive candidiasis worldwide surveillances. These changes have serious implications for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of invasive candidiasis. Updated knowledge of the current local epidemiology of invasive candidiasis is critical for the clinical management.  相似文献

Candida bracarensis is an emerging cryptic species within the Candida glabrata clade. To date, little is known about its epidemiology, virulence, and antifungal susceptibility. This study documents the occurrence of C. bracarensis for the first time in Mexico and focuses on its in vitro production of hydrolytic enzymes, as well as antifungal susceptibility to echinocandins. This strain was isolated from a vaginal swab of a female with vulvovaginal candidosis; exhibited a very strong activity of aspartyl proteinase, phospholipase, and hemolysin; and was susceptible to caspofungin, anidulafungin, and micafungin (MIC?=?0.031 μg/mL). Data obtained could contribute to the knowledge of the epidemiology and virulence attributes of this yeast as a fungal opportunistic human pathogen.  相似文献

Enabled by diverse high-throughput technologies, the rapidly evolving field of "-omics sciences" offers the potential to study health and disease in breadth and depth at the human population level. We have recently linked genomics and metabolomics to present the first genome-wide association study of metabolic traits in human urine providing new insights into the functional background of chronic kidney disease. We propose systems epidemiology as a novel approach to study the complexities of human pathophysiology by integrating various population-level omic-metrics and to identify new trans-omic biomarkers.  相似文献

Seven-year experience in the methodological guidance of the post-graduate specialization of medical graduates specializing in epidemiology has made it possible for the authors to come to the conclusion on the positive role of the on-the-job training of young specialists for a year after graduation, which is manifested by a shorter time necessary for their professional formation, the development of their capacity for making scientifically grounded, active solutions of practical problems. At the same time some defects, difficulties, and unsolved problems of on-the-job training have been revealed. The authors propose to organize internship also for this category of medical specialists and to carry out the specialization of all sanitary inspectors on the basis of "clinical" sanitary and epidemiological stations.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: This paper summarizes the main results obtained on Trypanosoma cruzi genetic diversity and population structure since this parasite became the theme of many genetic and molecular studies in the early seventies. RESULTS: T. cruzi exibits a paradigmatic pattern of long-term, clonal evolution, which has structured its natural populations into several discrete genetic subdivisions or "Discrete Typing Units" (DTU). Rare hybridization events are nevertheless detectable in natural populations and have been recently obtained in the laboratory. CONCLUSIONS: The DTUs and natural clones of T. cruzi constitute relevant units for molecular epidemiology and experimental evolution. Experimental mating opens the way to an in-depth knowledge of this parasite's formal genetics.  相似文献

The scientific bases, problems, methods and prospects for the development of a new scientific direction "Molecular epidemiology of late consequences of ionizing radiation influence on the man" are reviewed. It is marked, that for two decades on the basis of achievements in the field of molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics and genomics it has arisen and is developing the important direction in infectious and non-infectious epidemiology--molecular epidemiology. Molecular epidemiology is a new section of epidemiology on border with molecular biology and genetics, integrating efforts of epidemiologists, molecular biologists, genetics and researchers from many other areas of knowledge in a direction of an estimation of individual risk of development of chronic diseases at practically healthy people, development of recommendations on their preventive maintenance in cohorts of risk and, hence, in all population by studying by molecular methods of an etiology of illnesses, mechanisms of a susceptibility to them, and also biological mechanisms and frequency of their development in human cohorts. Special development in molecular epidemiology was noticed for the methods named biomarkers, subdivided on 4 categories: 1) markers of an internal dose; 2) markers of an effective dose; 3) markers of preclinical biological effects; 4) markers of a susceptibility. Use of biomarkers in molecular-epidemiological researches appeared especially productive in oncology. As radiogenic cancers are the main remote consequence of exposure to ionizing radiations, approaches and achievements of molecular epidemiology of nonradiation cancers are perspective at becoming of molecular epidemiology of radiation effects, with an object to solve problems concerning mechanisms and features of radiation carcinogenesis, risk assessment, distribution and preventive maintenance of radiogenic cancers in cohorts of professionals of the various branches having contact to sources of ionizing radiation, and the population, exposed to radiation medically.  相似文献

The term "zoonosis" is difficult to delimit because different authors have various definitions for this term. Few mycoses are usually considered zoonoses. However, the role that animals play in the epidemiology of the main human mycoses is still not well known. Moreover, the environmental niches for these fungal agents have not yet been completely determined. This special issue of the "Revista Iberoamericana de Micología" deals with the talks and round table presented at the VIII Spanish Mycological Congress held in October 2006 in Barcelona, Spain on "Cryptococcus spp. and zoonoses".  相似文献

Rheumatoid arthritis "in the buff": erosive arthritis in defleshed bones   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Examination of isolated bones from patients with unequivocal rheumatoid arthritis provides only a glimpse of the disease but has been the only "gold standard" for recognition of osseous lesions as compatible with the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. Documentation of skeletal pathologic changes in confidently diagnosed individuals has been a major missing link in the transition from clinical to skeletal analysis. Availability of appropriate skeletal material from two patients with long-standing, well-documented rheumatoid arthritis provided the opportunity for acquiring such information. The osseous appearance, skeletal distribution, and distinguishing features of rheumatoid arthritis "in the buff" were delineated in two contemporary patients and in a skeletal population of 2,906 individuals. The preconceived notion of anticipated severity of disease has hereby been tested and found wanting. Severe lesions are not recognizable or distinguishable from artifact in relatively fragile rheumatoid arthritis-affected bones, whether freshly prepared or remotely sampled. Characterization of the nature and epidemiology of osseous alterations in two contemporary skeletal populations permitted the development of a standard for recognition of the disease in skeletal populations.  相似文献

The corrosion technique was used to demonstrate the presence of the "sublobular artery", a constant vessel with a special profile of the dog kidney, generating after two divisions the so-called interlobular arteries as a third generation of branches. More rarely arteriae interlobulares emerge also directly from the arcuate artery. The sublobular arteries (= parent vessels of the interlobular arteries) are characterized by their particular origin, branching type, and by having no or sporadically disposed glomeruli. For this reason, the authors suggest the acception of the term "arteria sublobularis" in the international nomenclature of renal vessels. According to authors' opinion the dog kidney is composed of a number of conical vascular-parenchymatous units, each containing in their axis a sublobular artery of the second order ("conical" architectonics of the renal cortex).  相似文献

Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale--the "bashful" malaria parasites   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Although Plasmodium malariae was first described as an infectious disease of humans by Golgi in 1886 and Plasmodium ovale identified by Stevens in 1922, there are still large gaps in our knowledge of the importance of these infections as causes of malaria in different parts of the world. They have traditionally been thought of as mild illnesses that are caused by rare and, in case of P. ovale, short-lived parasites. However, recent advances in sensitive PCR diagnosis are causing a re-evaluation of this assumption. Low-level infection seems to be common across malaria-endemic areas, often as complex mixed infections. The potential interactions of P. malariae and P. ovale with Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax might explain some basic questions of malaria epidemiology, and understanding these interactions could have an important influence on the deployment of interventions such as malaria vaccines.  相似文献

In the larynx of the Suncus murinus (house musk shrew), the cricoid cartilage was situated laterally to and overlapped with the 1st, the 2nd, and a part of the 3rd tracheal cartilages. The term "laryngotrachea" was used for the region maintained by both the cricoid cartilage and the tracheal ones. It is suggested that the condition of the cartilages in Suncus laryngotrachea is the most primitive condition in mammals. In the dorsal wall, just caudal to the plate of the cricoid cartilage and dorsal to the 3rd tracheal cartilage, there existed the "L-shaped cartilage" (named by the authors).  相似文献

Pantoea agglomerans is a common soil bacterium used in the biocontrol of fungi and bacteria but is also an opportunistic human pathogen. It has been described extensively in this context, but knowledge of bacteriophages infecting this species is limited. Bacteriophages LIMEzero and LIMElight of P. agglomerans are lytic phages, isolated from soil samples, belonging to the Podoviridae and are the first Pantoea phages of this family to be described. The double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) genomes (43,032 bp and 44,546 bp, respectively) encode 57 and 55 open reading frames (ORFs). Based on the presence of an RNA polymerase in their genomes and their overall genome architecture, these phages should be classified in the subfamily of the Autographivirinae, within the genus of the "phiKMV-like viruses." Phylogenetic analysis of all the sequenced members of the Autographivirinae supports the classification of phages LIMElight and LIMEzero as members of the "phiKMV-like viruses" and corroborates the subdivision into the different genera. These data expand the knowledge of Pantoea phages and illustrate the wide host diversity of phages within the "phiKMV-like viruses."  相似文献

The complete sequence of the human and other vertebrate and nonvertebrate genomes provide a wealth of information on the organization, relationships and evolution of the metazoans. Soon the fine structure of our innermost biological identity will be unveiled and what has so far remained deep and secret will shine like an unearthed treasure and shape and fuel our future quests. A key treasure, for many molecular scientists interested in molecular evolution and development would be the knowledge of the genome of the ancestral precursor of all metazoans. In the absence of fossil DNA, this knowledge will forever remain a yearning for dreamy molecular biologists. Background

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites that infect a broad range of vertebrates and invertebrates. They have been increasingly recognized as human pathogens in AIDS patients, mainly associated with a life-threatening chronic diarrhea and systemic disease. However, to date the global epidemiology of human microsporidiosis is poorly understood, and recent data suggest that the incidence of these pathogens is much higher than previously reported and may represent a neglected etiological agent of more common diseases indeed in immunocompetent individuals. To contribute to the knowledge of microsporidia molecular epidemiology in HIV-positive patients in Nigeria, the authors tested stool samples proceeding from patients with and without diarrhea.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Stool samples from 193 HIV-positive patients with and without diarrhea (67 and 126 respectively) from Lagos (Nigeria) were investigated for the presence of microsporidia and Cryptosporidium using Weber’s Chromotrope-based stain, Kinyoun stain, IFAT and PCR. The Weber stain showed 45 fecal samples (23.3%) with characteristic microsporidia spores, and a significant association of microsporidia with diarrhea was observed (O.R.  = 18.2; CI: 95%). A similar result was obtained using Kinyoun stain, showing 44 (31,8%) positive samples with structures morphologically compatible with Cryptosporidium sp, 14 (31.8%) of them with infection mixed with microsporidia. The characterization of microsporidia species by IFAT and PCR allowed identification of Enterocytozoon bieneusi, Encephalitozoon intestinalis and E. cuniculi in 5, 2 and 1 samples respectively. The partial sequencing of the ITS region of the rRNA genes showed that the three isolates of E.bieneusi studied are included in Group I, one of which bears the genotype B.

Conclusions/Significance

To our knowledge, this is the first report of microsporidia characterization in fecal samples from HIV-positive patients from Lagos, Nigeria. These results focus attention on the need to include microsporidial diagnosis in the management of HIV/AIDS infection in Nigeria, at the very least when other more common pathogens have not been detected.  相似文献
