We discuss a simple model of co-evolution. In order to emphasize the effect of interaction between individuals, the entire population is subjected to the same physical environment. Species are emergent structures and extinction, origination and diversity are entirely a consequence of co-evolutionary interaction between individuals. For comparison, we consider both asexual and sexually reproducing populations. In either case, the system evolves through periods of hectic reorganization separated by periods of coherent stable coexistence.  相似文献

Audits of medical records were done for similar one-month periods in 1974 and 1977 in a 125-bed community hospital in Hawaii to determine patterns of antibiotic use. One quarter of all hospital patients in both study periods received antibiotics. In 1977 cephalosporins, ampicillin and aminoglycosides were the most commonly used antibiotics. Half of the antibiotics used by surgical specialty departments in both periods were for prophylactic indications. The cost of antimicrobial prophylaxis per patient was reduced by about 57 percent in 1977 compared with 1974. In the 1977 period, 58 percent of patients received proper prophylactic antibiotic regimens; this was statistically higher than the 15 percent of patients given appropriate prophylactic antibiotics in 1974. Fewer than half of the patients in both study periods treated for infections received correct antibiotic therapy. In contrast, 82 percent of infectious disease consultations were considered appropriate by an independent specialist in infectious disease. However, these consultations were obtained in only 15 percent of the patients who received therapeutic antibiotics. It was concluded that audits of patients receiving antibiotics can be effective in the development of appropriate prophylactic surgical regimens. However, during the study period in 1977, we were not able to show large scale improvement in therapeutic antimicrobial use at this community hospital, either by our attempts at physician education or by making infectious disease consultations available.  相似文献

Activations of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor by glutamate were studied in outside-out patches from CA1 cells in rat hippocampal slices. Very low glutamate concentrations (20-100 nM) were used so that individual receptor activations would be well separated. The shut-time distribution contained at least five components, only the longest component being obviously concentration dependent. The three briefest shut-time components had time constants of 56 microseconds, 0.68 ms and 10.1 ms; all of these were independent of glutamate concentration. An individual activation of the receptor therefore produces a long cluster of channel openings that contains longer gaps than have been reported for receptor activations by other fast neurotransmitters. In addition, (i) some activations may contain still longer (mean 78 ms) shut periods generating 'super clusters', and (ii) a significant amount of NMDA current may be carried by prolonged ('high P(open)') periods during which the channel is open for most of the time. Such periods occur intermittently even at these very low glutamate concentrations. It is suggested that the slow time course of the NMDA receptor-mediated synaptic currents may be determined mainly by the channel activation kinetics.  相似文献

High levels of NaCN (20 to 250 mM) were required to inhibit cyclooxygenase catalysis and cause extended lag periods (up to 1.6 min), whereas CO failed to inhibit catalysis. This NaCN inhibition was easily overcome by endogenous or exogenous hydroperoxides. Added hydroperoxides acted to eliminate lag periods without undergoing net conversion to other chemical species. In addition, experiments with glutathione peroxidase inhibition showed that hydroperoxides were essential not only in the early phases, but throughout catalysis. In spectrophotometric experiments, NaCN formed a complex with ferriheme cyclooxygenase (Kd = 1.3 mM) and inhibited hydroperoxide interaction with this form of the enzyme. Phenolic antioxidants, only slightly extended lag periods while inhibiting oxygenation rates more than 50%. Low levels of phenol (which is normally stimulatory) or alpha-naphthol when combined with NaCN or glutathione peroxidase (agents which interfere with peroxide activation) resulted in potent synergistic inhibition with long lag times. A mechanism consistent with all of the above properties of cyclooxygenase has been elucidated, Further mechanistic explanation was sought for reaction-catalyzed self-inactivation of cyclooxygenase. This phenomenon could not be explained simply by heme lability, or cyclooxygenase sensitivity to destruction by ambient hydroperoxides, Rather, it appears to involve a destructive reaction intermediate intrinsic to involve a destructive reaction intermediate intrinsic to the cyclooxygenase mechanism.  相似文献

2010—2016年我国草地螟一直维持总体轻发态势。为从长时间序列上分析连续轻发年份的历史地位,以1979年以来第2、3个暴发周期及其之间的间歇期为对照,分析了2010—2016年草地螟连续轻发的特点,即全国种群规模维持在历史低位,西北地区发生面积和比率加大,发生区域向西部缩减,提示我国草地螟种群发生已进入间歇期。分析了1979—2016年时间序列上华北、东北、西北3个地区的发生情况对全国的影响,结果表明:(1)华北地区、东北地区的发生面积自然对数值与全国发生面积自然对数值呈极显著的线性正相关,即华北、东北地区与全国发生趋势的年际波动完全一致;(2)西北地区发生面积自然对数值与全国的线性相关性达显著水平,但在不同的历史阶段西北地区与全国的波动趋势有明显差别;(3)自第3个暴发周期的2005年以后,西北地区的波动曲线逐渐与全国趋同,推测这一变化与新疆种群的建立和发展有关。  相似文献

Five-day-old seedlings of oat ( Avena saliva L. cv. Seger) were subjected to water-deficit stress for two and four periods, each of 24h duration with interjacent rewatering periods of 24 h. After two and tour stress periods the fresh weight/dry weight ratio of the roots was 73 and 74% of the control value, respectively. Two stress periods did not affect the amount or composition of free, esterified and glycosylated sterols (desmethylsterols) or methylsterols (mono- and dimethylsterols). After four stress periods the amount of tree sterols increased by 25% on a dry-weight basis but that of free methylsterols only slightly. The most significant increase (by over 60%) occurred in esterified sterols and methylsterols. The amount of sterols bound as glycosides and acylaled glycosides decreased slightly (by 10%) after four stress periods. The amount of glycosylated methylsterols was negligible and did not respond to water-deficit stress. Within all component groups the proportions of individual compounds remained unaffected after two and four stress periods. The increase of the sterol levels caused by the stress is discussed in terms of a hormone-induced synthesis leading to a changed sterol/membrane acyl lipid ratio. This has implications for the chemo-physical properties of the root cell membranes.  相似文献

The efficiency of an incomplete prezygotic reproductive isolating mechanism in one- and two-population models is studied. The isolating mechanism studied has a monogenic hereditary basis, and depends on the fact that the various genotypes "choose" different periods or sites to perform their reproductive activity. In the one-population models, the "neutral" gene exchange between the two morphs characterized by the alternative forms of the isolating mechanism decreases drastically only when there is an extremely low frequency of individuals with different genotypes reproducing in the same sites and during the same periods. Furthermore, the reduction in gene exchange caused by the prezygotic isolation is smaller with tight linkage between the gene-determining partial reproductive isolation and the neutral gene. In the two-population models the prezygotic isolation causes a reduction in gene exchange which is smaller with low migration rates, and is negligible for very low rates.  相似文献

In response to climate changes that have occurred during Pleistocene glacial cycles, taxa associated to steppe vegetation might have followed a pattern of historical evolution in which isolation and fragmentation of populations occurred during the short interglacials and expansion events occurred during the long glacial periods, in contrast to the pattern described for temperate species. Here, we use molecular genetic data to evaluate this idea in a steppe bird with Palaearctic distribution, the little bustard (Tetrax tetrax). Overall, extremely low genetic diversity and differentiation was observed among eight little bustard populations distributed in Spain and France. Mismatch distribution analyses showed that most little bustard populations expanded during cooling periods previous to, and just after, the last interglacial period (127,000-111,000 years before present), when steppe habitats were widespread across Europe. Coalescent-based methods suggested that glacial expansions have resulted in substantial admixture in Western Europe due to the existence of different interglacial refugia. Our results are consistent with a model of evolution and genetic consequences of Pleistocene cycles with low between-population genetic differentiation as a result of short-term isolation periods during interglacials and long-term exchange during glacial periods.  相似文献

Cyclical changes in concentration of plasma progesterone, urinary oestrone-conjugates and urinary luteinizing hormone (LH) were compared in young and older cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) and saddle-backed tamarins (S. fuscicollis). A group of six young adult tamarin females (4-5 years of age) was sampled over eight periods of 6-8 weeks and six older (14-20 years of age) females were sampled over thirteen periods. There was hormonal evidence of ovulation in all of the sampling periods for young females; in five of thirteen periods, older females displayed no evidence of ovulation. Of the six older females, two were anovulatory in one sampling period, while one female displayed no evidence of ovulation in any of three sampling periods. Generally, females over 17 years of age either did not ovulate or displayed abnormally long periods of moderate concentrations of progesterone and oestrone conjugates. Basal concentrations of LH differed in individuals, but were not always higher in older females. In contrast to patterns of reproductive senescence in other primates, older, anovulatory tamarins displayed moderate concentrations of urinary oestrone conjugates (5-50 micrograms/mg creatinine) and plasma progesterone (8-19 ng/ml), both of which are hormones of probable luteal origin in these species. This result suggests continued production of steroids by the luteal cells of the prominent interstitial gland in reproductively senescent tamarins. This suggestion was reinforced by histological examination of the ovaries of four older, anovulatory females; few primary follicles were found. Three females had no normal antral follicles, but all females had large luteal masses. The presence of functional luteal cells in the older ovaries, which do not experience regular follicular development, may distinguish ovarian ageing in New World primates from that of Old World primates.  相似文献

The hibernating bear is an excellent model for disuse osteoporosis in humans because it is a naturally occurring large animal model. Furthermore, bears and humans have similar lower limb skeletal morphology, and bears walk plantigrade like humans. Black bears (Ursus americanus) may not develop disuse osteoporosis during long periods of disuse (i.e. hibernation) because they maintain osteoblastic bone formation during hibernation. As a consequence, bone volume, mineral content, porosity, and strength are not adversely affected by annual periods of disuse. In fact, cortical bone bending strength has been shown to increase with age in hibernating black bears without a significant change in porosity. Other animals require remobilization periods 2-3 times longer than the immobilization period to recover the bone lost during disuse. Our findings support the hypothesis that black bears, which hibernate for as long as 5-7 months annually, have evolved biological mechanisms to mitigate the adverse effects of disuse on bone porosity and strength.  相似文献

The phonotactic response of cricket females was investigated on a locomotion compensator to determine the temporal parameters of the male's calling song which are important for species recognition. Two sympatric species (Teleogryllus commodus, T. oceanicus) that show different syllable periods in the chirp and trill parts of their calling songs were used. By their responses T. commodus females exhibited two temporal filters for syllable periods, which were tuned to the species-specific syllable periods occurring during chirp and trill. For song recognition both filters had to be activated and for both a minimum number of three to five consecutive syllable periods was necessary. In contrast, T. oceanicus females showed only one sharply tuned filter corresponding to the chirp part of the male's calling song. This filter was sufficient for calling song recognition. Syllable periods of the trill part also influenced calling song recognition, but these played only a minor role. Carrier frequency was also important for positive phonotaxis. Calling song recognition by T. commodus females is largely based on central nervous processing, while for T. oceanicus both peripheral frequency filtering and central temporal filtering is important. The non-Michaelis-Menten kinetics, burst and steady-state periods, expressed by citrate synthase in the presence of citryl-CoA, were investigated by labelling experiments with trace amounts of [14C]acetyl-CoA. The results indicate that citrate becomes labelled in the reaction of liberated acetyl-CoA with the binary synthase.oxaloacetate complex that is transiently generated in the lyase reaction of citryl-CoA. Mediated by the hydrolase function of synthase, the counteracting citryl-CoA lyase and ligase reactions operate towards a transient flow equilibrium. This precedes the thermodynamic equilibrium and is established during the burst period; it is maintained under steady-state conditions and corresponds to the formation of transiently nonproductive synthase. The rates of both synthase partial reactions, therefore, are likewise affected. Oxaloacetate in the presence of acetyl-CoA competitively inhibits the hydrolysis of citryl-CoA and vice versa. In the synthase dependence of the burst periods and during the time dependence of the steady-state periods, nonproportionally more of physiological substrates participate in citrate formation. The nonproportional increase is a consequence of the continuously changing conditions to establish or to maintain the flow equilibrium, respectively, during the reaction progress. Third rate periods after the steady state result if the equilibrium conditions cannot be satisfied. High concentrations of oxaloacetate inhibit the expression of non-Michaelis-Menten kinetics by formation of nonproductive synthase.oxaloacetate complex. The supply of acetyl-CoA is then sufficient and the formation of the flow equilibrium prevented. The implication of the results with structural work is discussed.  相似文献

The study of glacial relict species has been focused on understanding how the biogeographic patterns of species have developed. A number of studies using phylogenetic and population genetics approaches have been conducted for terrestrial glacial relict species, and the mechanisms of their formation have been elucidated. On the other hand, less focus has been placed on glacial relict species inhabiting freshwater systems. In particular, stable lakes can serve as refugia during a glacial period, but research studies on freshwater relict species inhabiting lakes have not been well conducted. In order to clarify the mechanism of the glacial relict species in freshwater, we conducted a molecular phylogeny analysis, divergence time estimation, and a biogeographic reconstruction on freshwater Valvatidae molluscs, which have been considered as a glacial relict in the Japanese Archipelago. Our study shows that the valvatid fauna in the Japanese Archipelago was produced by multiple dispersal events from the Asian continent and by vicariance events during the period of the Pliocene–Quaternary glaciation. It includes multiple relict species that survived interglacial periods in different lakes. These findings suggest that the lakes can serve as refugia not only during glacial periods, but also during interglacial periods.  相似文献

A stress-muscle hyperactivity-pain (SMP) model has been proposed to explain the etiology of certain musculoskeletal pain disorders. According to this model, subjects should show physiological arousal during periods of stress relative to periods of rest. In a test of this prediction, 31 subjects performed a reaction time task that has been used in previous laboratory studies. Multiple psychophysiological variables were monitored during initial and final 10-minute baselines, during performance on nine 2-minute reaction time tasks, and during 36-second rest intervals following each of the 2-minute tasks. Results showed small but statistically significant differences generally supporting the SMP model when masseter EMG was averaged over time periods of 12 seconds to 2 minutes, but not when masseter EMG was averaged over 10- to 18-minute blocks. These results demonstrated the importance of carefully selecting time intervals for analysis. Additional analyses that compared TMD with symptom-free subjects revealed small differences in EMG that supported the SMP model. Analyses of EMG over shorter time intervals also showed, however, that masseter EMG increased during the 36-second rest interval following performance on a 2-minute stress task; this result suggested that a modification of the SMP model may be necessary.This research was supported in part by Grant 2 S06RR08038-17 funded by the National Institutes of Health.  相似文献

Development in animals is frequently characterized by periods of heightened capacity for both neural and behavioral change. So-called sensitive periods of development are windows of opportunity in which brain and behavior are most susceptible to modification. Understanding what factors regulate sensitive periods constitutes one of the main goals of developmental neuroscience. Why is the ability to learn complex behavioral patterns often restricted to sensitive periods of development? Songbirds provide a model system for unraveling the mysteries of neural mechanisms of learning during development. Like many songbirds, zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) learn a specific vocal pattern during a restricted period early in life. Young birds must hear songs produced by members of their species; this auditory experience is thought to engender specific changes in the brain to guide the process of vocal learning. Many studies of the songbird system have focused on examining relationships between brain development and learning. One goal of this work is to elucidate mechanisms that regulate basic processes of neural development, and in so doing to shed light on factors governing the emergence of a complex learned behavior.  相似文献

The effect of weather on the eutrophication of a shallow lake was estimated by a hydrodynamic lake model coupled with a simple water quality module. The model was applied to Lake Villikkalanjärvi in southern Finland. This shallow, agriculturally loaded lake may stratify during warm and calm periods in summer and as a result oxygen is often consumed from the hypolimnion, causing high internal loading of phosphorus. Vertical mixing and temperature distribution in the lake were simulated by a one-dimensional, horizontally integrated hydrodynamic model. State variables included in the water quality model were dissolved reactive phosphorus, chlorophyll a and dissolved oxygen. The model was first calibrated against observations from 1989 and 1990. Thereafter, simulations were carried out using weather data from the years 1961 to 1988. The results indicated that warm summer periods may cause high chlorophyll a concentrations due to high internal loading. In four years with exceptionally warm summers the model predicted maximum chlorophyll a concentrations almost twice as high as in years without remarkable internal loading. The model simulates accurately temperature and mixing but the reliability of water quality predictions could be improved by adding more factors regulating algal biomass and sediment phosphorus release.  相似文献

A bioartificial liver (BAL) will bridge patients with acute liver failure (ALF) to either spontaneous regeneration or liver transplantation. The nitrogen metabolism is important in ALF, and the metabolism of nonparenchymal liver cells (NPCs) is poorly understood. The scope of this study was to investigate whether cocultivation of hepatocytes with NPCs would augment the functions of a BAL (HN-BAL) compared with a BAL equipped with only hepatocytes (H-BAL). In addition, NPCs were similarly cultivated alone. The cells were cultivated for 8 days in simulated microgravity with serum-free growth medium. With NPCs, initial ammonia and lactate production were fivefold and over twofold higher compared with later time periods despite sufficient oxygen supply. Initial lactate production and glutamine consumption were threefold higher in HN-BAL than in H-BAL. With NPCs, initial glutamine consumption was two- to threefold higher compared with later time periods, whereas initial ornithine production and arginine consumption were over four- and eightfold higher compared with later time periods. In NPCs, the conversion of glutamine to glutamate and ammonia can be explained by the presence of glutaminase, as revealed by PCR analysis. Drug metabolism and clearance of aggregated gamma globulin, probes administered to test functions of hepatocytes and NPCs, respectively, were higher in HN-BAL than in H-BAL. In conclusion, NPCs produce ammonia by hydrolysis of amino acids and may contribute to the pathogenesis of ALF. High amounts of lactate are produced by NPCs under nonhypoxic conditions. Cocultivation augments differentiated functions such as drug metabolism and clearance of aggregated gamma-globulin.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that 3-acetyl-7-oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone alone (7-Keto) and in combination with calcium citrate, green tea extract, ascorbic acid, chromium nicotinate and cholecalciferol (HUM5007) will increase the resting metabolic rate (RMR) of overweight subjects maintained on a calorie-restricted diet. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial, overweight adults on a calorie-restricted diet were randomized to three 7-day treatment periods with 7-Keto, HUM5007 or placebo. Resting metabolic rate was measured by indirect calorimetry at the beginning and end of each treatment period with a 7-day washout between testing periods. Of 45 subjects enrolled, 40 completed the study (30 women, 10 men; mean age, 38.5 years; mean mass index, 32.0 kg/m(2)). During the placebo treatment, RMR decreased by 3.9% (75+/-111 kcal/day; mean+/-S.D.); however, RMR increased significantly by 1.4% (21+/-115 kcal/day) and 3.4% (59+/-118 kcal/day) during the 7-Keto and HUM5007 treatment periods, respectively (each compared to placebo, P=.001). No significant differences were found between the treatment periods with respect to compliance or adverse events. In this study, the administration of HUM5007 or 7-Keto reversed the decrease in RMR normally associated with dieting. HUM5007 and 7-Keto increased RMR above basal levels and may benefit obese individuals with impaired energy expenditure. HUM5007 and 7-Keto were generally well tolerated and no serious adverse events were reported.  相似文献

Vibrio abundance generally displays seasonal patterns. In temperate coastal areas, temperature and salinity influence Vibrio growth, whereas in tropical areas this pattern is not obvious. The present study assessed the dynamics of Vibrio in the Arabian Sea, 1-2 km off Mangalore on the south-west coast of India, during temporally separated periods. The two sampling periods were signified by oligotrophic conditions, and stable temperatures and salinity. Vibrio abundance was estimated by culture-independent techniques in relation to phytoplankton community composition and environmental variables. The results showed that the Vibrio density during December 2007 was 10- to 100-fold higher compared with the February-March 2008 period. High Vibrio abundance in December coincided with a diatom-dominated phytoplankton assemblage. A partial least squares (PLS) regression model indicated that diatom biomass was the primary predictor variable. Low nutrient levels suggested high water column turnover rate, which bacteria compensated for by using organic molecules leaking from phytoplankton. The abundance of potential Vibrio predators was low during both sampling periods; therefore it is suggested that resource supply from primary producers is more important than top-down control by predators.  相似文献
