Three-dimensionally preserved specimens of an indeterminate species of Sphenothallus Hall occur in limestones in the uppermost Guojiaba and lower Xiannudong formations (Qiongzhusian and early Canglangpuan stages, Lower Cambrian) in southern Shaanxi Province, China. The specimens consist of a small (up to 3 mm long), gradually tapered, subcircular to elliptic (transversely) tube that is broken at both ends, commonly with the fracture edge at the wide (apertural) end of each face forming a V- or U-shaped notch. Some specimens preserve the subconical upper (proximal) part of the holdfast, and all specimens are black. Combined scanning and transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive elemental analyses show that the tube wall is finely laminated, with individual laminae measuring about 1 μm thick, and consists mainly of calcium phosphate but also contains organic material. Sphenothallus specimens from the Lower Cambrian Guojiaba and Xiannudong formations represent the earliest known record of this genus, and indicate that the origin of this taxon is coeval with and possibly related to the Early Cambrian bioradiation event.  相似文献

Background

Abundant fossils from the Ediacaran and Cambrian showing cnidarian grade grossly suggest that cnidarian diversification occurred earlier than that of other eumetazoans. However, fossils of possible soft-bodied polyps are scanty and modern corals are dated back only to the Middle Triassic, although molecular phylogenetic results support the idea that anthozoans represent the first major branch of the Cnidaria. Because of difficulties in taxonomic assignments owing to imperfect preservation of fossil cnidarian candidates, little is known about forms ancestral to those of living groups.

Methods and Findings

We have analyzed the soft-bodied polypoid microfossils Eolympia pediculata gen. et sp. nov. from the lowest Cambrian Kuanchuanpu Formation in southern China by scanning electron microscopy and computer-aided microtomography after isolating fossils from sedimentary rocks by acetic acid maceration. The fossils, about a half mm in body size, are preserved with 18 mesenteries including directives bilaterally arranged, 18 tentacles and a stalk-like pedicle. The pedicle suggests a sexual life cycle, while asexual reproduction by transverse fission also is inferred by circumferential grooves on the body column.

Conclusions

The features found in the present fossils fall within the morphological spectrum of modern Hexacorallia excluding Ceriantharia, and thus Eolympia pediculata could be a stem member for this group. The fossils also demonstrate that basic features characterizing modern hexacorallians such as bilateral symmetry and the reproductive system have deep roots in the Early Cambrian.  相似文献

Abstract: The morphology and ontogeny of the eodiscid trilobite Tsunyidiscus acutus Sun is described on the basis of numerous calcified specimens collected from the Lower Cambrian Shuijingtuo Formation in Yichang and Changyang, Hubei Province, South China. An ontogenetic series is established based on the articulated material including the previously unknown protaspides and meraspides (degrees 0 and 1). The material, revealing some prominent morphological changes such as the number of pygidial axial rings, genal spines retained throughout ontogeny and pygidial pleurae from furrowed to unfurrowed, enables a discussion on the trunk segmentation schedule, indicating that somitogenesis and tagmosis occurred independently during the ontogenetic development of T. acutus.  相似文献

Acrotretoids, one of the oldest brachiopod groups, are abundant in the Lower Cambrian Jiulaodong Formation. The shell of Linnarssonia sp. is composed of two layers: a primary layer and a columnar secondary layer. The primary layer is mostly exfoliated, resulting in exposure of the openings to the central canal of the columns. Filae are seen on the surface of the columnar layer, indicating that the columnar secondary layer has influenced changes in ornament on the shell surface. The larval shell has only very weak ripples; the post-larval shell has obvious concentric ribs. Small pits of variable shape cover almost the entire shell surface. The secondary layer is composed of several columnar laminations, each of which comprises both the upper and lower laminae and the cylindrical columns between them. On the inner side of shell the thin columnar laminations increase. The new microstructural data show that two shell layers are developed in Early Cambrian acrotretoid brachiopods; the columnar lamination may be a primitive feature of the microstructural development of the Brachiopoda and may help establish the affinity between different stem-group brachiopods.  相似文献

Simultaneously with the development of animal body plans, probably before the Precambrian, there was an explosive diversification of visual systems. Competition of performance in these visual systems was a critical factor in the evolution of life systems.
Here we analyse the visual system in the lobopod Miraluolishania haikouensis ( Liu et al ., 2004 ) from the Lower Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte, Kunming, China. It consists of a very small eye with a miniscule lens. A physical problem lies in the fact that due to the usual refractive conditions of such a lens, it hardly represents an improvement of the visual quality over the basal pit- or pinhole camera eyes. To develop such a lavish visual system, however, would not have been of any value, if it achieved no more than an equal level or represented even a retrograde step in evolutionary progress. We show how this system may have allowed pattern recognition even under poor light conditions. Optimization of such a tiny eye is costly but is not 'a wasted effort' in evolution. In M. haikouensis ( Liu et al. , 2004 ), an excellently adapted miniscule visual system has become possible.  相似文献

A comparative study of Lower Cambrian Halkieria and Middle Cambrian Wiwaxia   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Two Cambrian lepidote metazoans known from different respective types of preservation have been compared in order to elucidate their biology and affinities. The widely distributed Lower Cambrian Halkieria is represented by isolated hollow sclerites, probably of originally calcareous composition. The Middle Cambrian Wiwaxia is known from the Burgess Shale as isolated sclerites (scales and spines) and as more or less complete individuals. Although Halkieria sclerites were mineralized and those of Wiwaxia were probably not, there are fundamental structural and morphological similarities between the two. Both bad an imbricating scaly and spiny armour consisting of hollow sclerites with a longitudinally fibrous structure. The sclerites did not grow, but were probably moulted during the course of ontogenetic growth. Halkieria and Wiwaxia are regarded as closely related. Both are referred to the Order Sachitida He 1980. The sclerite armour of Halkieria is reconstructed on the template provided by Wiwaxia. The interpretation of sachitid sclerites as protective armour is an alternative to the interpretation by Jell (1981, Alcheringa 5 )that sachitid sclerites were respiratory organs in an animal of probable annelid affinities. Sachitids are interpreted as sluggish, benthic deposit feeders that do not belong to any recognized phylum.  相似文献

New specimens of Paucipodia inermis Chen, Zhou & Ramsköld, 1995, are described from the Lower Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte in Haikou, Kunming. Details not previously seen in the Chengjiang material appear to be caused by early diagenetic processes. Some features not previously observed in Palaeozoic lobopodians include details of the dermomuscular sac, body cavities, contents of the gut, possible paired ventral nerve ganglia, and a rasping or biting apparatus with teeth. The latter implies a fundamental difference from onychophorans and rules out an ancestral position for Palaeozoic lobopodians. The supposed tail is shown to be the head, and it is shown that this animal possessed nine pairs of lobopods rather than six, as originally stated. The family Paucipodiidae n. fam. is introduced.  相似文献

Located in the northwest margin of the South China Block during the Cambrian, the Lower Cambrian Yanwangbian Formation of southern Shaanxi Province, Central China, has yielded a diverse fossil assemblage that includes abundant bradoriid arthropods, inarticulate brachiopods, hyolithids, trilobites, priapulids, lightly sclerotized arthropods, and ichnofossils. This assemblage represents the biodiversity of Early Cambrian marine communities in South China. Here we describe two new bradoriids from this stratigraphic unit, Sanlangella xixiangensis n. gen. et n. sp. and Kunmingella pentagona n. sp. On the basis of its carapace morphology, S. xixiangensis is assigned to the family Comptalutidae Öpik. The specimens of this species are preserved either in clay minerals or in calcium phosphate. Scanning electron microscopy analysis of phosphatized specimens reveals the microscopic reticulate surface ornaments that form a polygonal pattern on the anterodorsal node, around the base of mid-dorsal spine and along the lateroadmarginal rim. K. pentagona is described as the third species of this preexisting genus, based on the eight specimens with a distinctive pentagonal outline, a prominent anterodorsal curve and an anterodorsal sulcus.  相似文献

Lingulellotreta malongensis Rong is the earliest known taxon of the family Lingulellotretidae, which is characterized by the presence of a pedicle foramen as well as an internal pedicle tube. New material from the Early Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte of southern China provides improved anatomical knowledge for lingulellotretid species especially for the digestive system. Additional gut fossils exhibit distinctly the anterior portion composed of esophagus and distended stomach, situated in the alleged visceral cavity, with the recurved intestine accommodated inside a hollow pseudointerarea. The frequency of occurrence of this intestinal layout suggests that this is not just an artefact of preservation. The gross configuration of the guts and the way they are preserved in the fossils suggest that they are in situ and, therefore, we can assume that Lingulellotreta had a hollow cavity presumably subtended by the pseuodelthyrium, which was invaded and occupied by the visceral organs. Hence, these fossils demonstrate the dangers of extrapolating crown‐group soft‐tissue configuration to the stem group.  相似文献

The increase in the depth and intensity of bioturbation through the Proterozoic-­Phanerozoic transition changed the substrates on which marine benthos lived from being relatively firm with a sharp sediment-water interface to having a high water content and blurry sediment-water interface. Additionally, microbial mats, once dominant on normal marine Proterozoic seafloors, were relegated to stressed settings lacking intense metazoan activity. This change in substrates has been termed the 'agronomic revolution', and its impact on benthic metazoans has been termed the 'Cambrian substrate revolution'. The shallow marine phosphorites of the Lower Cambrian Meishucun Formation of southwest China contain evidence suggestive of the presence of seafloor microbial mats. This evidence includes abundant and distinctive red-colored bedding planes enriched in heavy iron minerals and mica, interpreted as resulting from mat-decay mineralization and mica trapping by microbial mats. The radular grazing trace fossil Radulichnus is also found in this formation, indicating a firm, microbial mat-bound substrate. These radular scratches are always preserved with circular impressions around 10 cm in diameter, possibly the fossils of soft-bodied organisms. The first relatively intense bioturbation in this region is found in this formation and is dominated by horizontal Thalassinoides burrows, which could represent undermat mining behavior. The evidence for the presence of microbial mats in the Lower Cambrian Meishucun Formation, and for metazoan lifestyles associated with such mat-bound seafloors, reveals that normal marine environments dominated by typical Proterozoic-style soft substrates still existed during the Cambrian substrate revolution.  相似文献

Interpretation of the enigmatic soft‐bodied yunnanozoans from the Lower Cambrian (Stage 3, Series 2) Chengjiang Biota has remained controversial for decades because of their strange body plan and their variable taphonomic alteration. Proposed affinities have ranged from stem bilaterian to stem vertebrate. A study of over seven hundred slabs, many newly collected, from five sections at two localities demonstrates that yunnanozoans have sclerotized dorsal and axial segments, a body cavity, a unique feeding region and a coiled alimentary canal. Although two genera have been previously discriminated, all specimens have the same number of filamentous arches (seven pairs) and of ventral circular structures (four pairs); this indicates that Haikouella Chen, Huang and Li, 1999 is a junior synonym of Yunnanozoon Hou, Ramsköld and Bergström, 1991. Our analysis reveals new details of the putative pharyngeal pores of Yunnanozoon lividum, and although there are similarities with the gill slits of deuterostomes, the question of their homology remains moot. The filamentous arches and their supporting rods were probably sclerotized and represent a specialized feeding structure. Yunnanozoans exhibit characters that are open to a number of alternative interpretations of putative homology, encompassing comparisons with deuterostomes and protostomes (including members of the Platyzoa). Given their unique features, and the current lack of secure homologies, the affinities of yunnanozoans should continue to be considered in a wider bilaterian context.  相似文献

Ten specimens of two phosphatic fossils have been recently discovered in lower and middle portions of Middle Cambrian Jince Formation in the Czech Republic. They are attributed to the genus Sphenothallus Hall, 1847 and described as two separate species; comparatively small conchs are described as S. kozaki sp. nov., the much larger specimens characterized by its smooth and partly flexible organo-phosphatic walls of shell are determined as ?S. kordulei sp. nov. Sphenothallus is known to range from Cambrian to Permian and accommodates numerous species. However, its Cambrian distribution is considerably restricted. Generally rare specimens have been described from Lower to Middle Cambrian of Laurentia and from the Lower Cambrian of Gondwana and peri-Gondwana. The new record of Sphenothallus from the Jince Biota represents a notable extension of their geographic range.  相似文献

Three species ofOcruranus Liu, 1979 are described from the Bastion Formation of North-East Greenland, of late Early Cambrian (middle Dyeran of North American usage) age, representing the youngest record of a genus originally described from the earliest Cambrian Meishucunian Stage of China. An accompanying species, tentatively assigned toXianfengella He &Yang, 1982, seems also to be present in South Australia in strata of late Early Cambrian (Botoman of Siberian usage) age, although also this genus was described originally from the Meishucunian.Ocruranus andXianfengella from China have been interpreted as possibly parts of coeloscleritophoran scleritomes, perhaps halkieriids, rather than individual molluscan shells. Their shell form is not typical of helcionelloids which otherwise dominate the Early Cambrian molluscan record, but conclusive evidence of affinity is not forthcoming from the Greenland records.
