Long-term (1966–2015) stationary and expedition studies in eastern Fennoscandia have revealed specific changes in the structure and abundance of rodent populations under the influence of concentrated forest fells. The general patterns of the influence of intensive forest exploitation on the natural habitats, numbers, territorial distribution, and ecological features of small rodents in the region are analyzed. It has been established that, for most rodent species, industrial harvesting leads to a decrease in the total abundance of populations, as well as to an erratic shift in population dynamics with sudden short recoveries and deep longterm depressions, the formation of a nonresistant mosaic spatial distribution, and a disturbance of the rates and a decrease in the intensity of breeding and population reproduction.  相似文献

Existing in suboptimal conditions is a frequent occurrence for species inhabiting the cusp of their ecological range. In range‐edge populations of plants, the scarcity of suitable habitat may be reflected in small population sizes which may result in increased self‐pollination and/or inbreeding and an increase in the incidence of clonal reproduction. These factors may result in a decrease in levels of genetic diversity and a loss of potential adaptive variation that may compromise species’ ability to cope with changes in their environment, an issue that is particularly relevant today with the current concern surrounding global climate change and its effect on species’ distributional ranges. In the present study, we have compared the levels of clonal reproduction in the one‐sided wintergreen Orthilia secunda (L.) House in (1) populations from its main continuous distribution range, (2) populations occurring on the limits of the continuous range, and (3) peripheral populations outwith the species’ continuous distribution range. Range‐edge populations in Scotland and Sweden displayed significantly lower genotypic richness and diversity than those from the main area of the species’ distribution in these countries. Populations from Ireland, which occur in the temperate zone rather than the boreal conditions that are the preferred habitat for the species, and which represent relict populations left over from cooler periods in the Earth's history, displayed no within‐population genetic diversity, suggesting a complete lack of sexual reproduction. Furthermore, the genetic distinctiveness of the Irish populations, which contained alleles not found in either the Scottish or the Swedish populations, highlights the value of ‘trailing edge’ populations and supports the concept of ‘parochial conservation’, namely the conservation of species that are locally rare but globally common.  相似文献

The prospects for persistence of Eryngium maritimum in its northern distribution area was evaluated by studying historical data, matrix modelling, dispersal, seed germination and molecular variation. Historical data revealed a fragmented distribution of small populations with decrease in both population numbers and size during the last 150 years. Fruits of E. maritimum were found to have a relative low floating ability, making the prospects of long distance water dispersal more limited than would be expected from the world distribution of the species. Germination was found to be low (< 25 %). Elasticity matrices showed that survival of reproductive plants were more important than reproduction. High juvenile mortality and low germination activity emphasised the importance of rapid growth and survival. The population insurance against natural catastrophes and environmental stochasticity is suggested to be in a "root bank" of established individuals that are able to tolerate disturbances due to clonal reproduction and regrowth from root fragments. Isozyme electrophoresis revealed low molecular variation on a large geographical scale. The chromosome number is 2n = 16. A high degree of fixed heterozygosity suggests that the species is tetraploid with basic chromosome, number x = 4. The persistence prospects of E. maritimum in its northernmost distribution area are considered low considering the small population sizes, the low dispersal ability and low germination.  相似文献

Early succesion of newly created sown/unsown margin strips on ex arableland, managed by two cuttings per year with/without removal of cuttings was characterised by the replacement of annuals in favour of perennials, a steadily increase in the importance of monocots and a decrease in non N-fixing dicots. Mowing with removal of cuttings delayed this succession pattern. Sorenson's qualitative similarity index (based solely on species occurrence) revealed that species composition of the sown communities (in terms of species occurrence) became increasingly similar to the unsown plots. Furthermore convergence in vegetation composition between sown and unsown plots occurred also in terms of species importance as assessed by Sorenson's quantitative index (based on the combination of species occurrence and importance). Similarity in species importance (but not of species occurrence) was significantly enhanced by cutting with removal of cuttings. During the first 3 successional years, species diversity of sown and unsown communities converged in time, irrespective of mowing regime or location. The decrease in species diversity, number of sown wildflower species and wildflower density of sown communities was more pronounced under a mowing regime without removal of cuttings. The annual addition of mown roadside herbage significantly enhanced species richness but not the importance of dicots.  相似文献

Successful propagation of Cineraria saxifraga was achieved using apical softwood cuttings and micropropagation protocols. Plants propagated using micropropagation had a multiplication rate eight times that of the original population after 4 wk. Apical cuttings were subjected to a standard conductive freezing test to establish the freezing tolerance of the species. Results showed that cold‐acclimated plants had a 43% increased survival compared to non‐acclimated plants. Using plants established from tissue culture, two further freezing tests were conducted to establish the effects of surface water and container size on the frost resistance of this species. Surface water significantly decreased survival score compared to dry plants. Plants grown in small containers had a significant decrease in plant survival score compared to those grown in large containers.  相似文献

Comparative analysis of species composition, biotopic distribution, population structure, and reproduction of rodents and insectivores in Chisinau City was performed in October?CNovember 2008 (3029 traps days, 715 animals). Sylvaemus sylvaticus appeared to be the most numerous and widely distributed species, the reproductive strategy of which consisted of intense reproduction in the summer. The second most abundant species was Microtus rossiaemeridionalis, which had a different reproductive strategy, with part of its population continuing to reproduce actively in the autumn. Urban woodlands are the most close to natural biotopes by the species composition. The highest number of animals was defined for meadows and gardens. No rodents and insectivores are found on lawns and waste grounds.  相似文献

Mortality rates often depend on the size of a population. Using ideal free theory to model the optimal timing of reproduction in model populations, I considered how the specific relationship between density-dependent offspring mortality and population size affects the optimal temporal distribution of reproduction. The results suggest that the specific form of the relationship between density-dependent mortality and the number of offspring produced determines the degree to which reproduction within a population is synchronous. Specifically, reproductive synchrony decreases as density-dependent mortality becomes increasingly inversely related to the number of offspring produced and is highest when density-dependent mortality is directly density-dependent. These findings support the suggestion that predation pressure selects for greater reproductive synchrony in species where mortality is directly density-dependent, but does not affect the timing of reproduction in species with density-independent rates of mortality. Nesting features of four species of cavity-nesting birds—common starling (Sturnus vulgaris L.), great tit (Parus major L.), common redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus L.), and pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca Pall.)—have been studied in city. Under urban conditions, number of eggs in a nest of a redstart is significantly larger, while for great tit and pied flycatcher it is significantly smaller; differences between the populations of starling are insignificant. Success of reproduction for the cavity-nesters is significantly higher in a city and exceeds the reference value for all the species by 10–20%. The number of chicks per a reproduction attempt is also higher in city for all the species. Starling population in city exceeds the reference population in the success of reproduction mainly due to a decrease in the percentage of abandoned eggs. The main reasons for an increase in the reproduction success of other species at the urbanized locality are weakened pressure of predators and a decrease in the percentage of abandoned broods.  相似文献

Two adjacent populations of P. lanceolata were observed to have different rosette morphologies and apparently, capacities for vegetative reproduction. Plants growing in an open, sunny habitat were clumped while those found growing in a periodically shaded habitat, only developed as single rosettes. Representative genotypes from each population were cloned from leaf cuttings and propagated in controlled-environment facilities. Growth and vegetative reproduction were measured under two contrasting irradiances to determine whether the differences seen in the field were primarily genetic or environmentally induced. These studies indicated that each population was adapted to the light regime most similar to that prevailing in its natural habitat. The clumping in the open population was the result of a greater capacity for vegetative reproduction.  相似文献

Though translocations of rare populations should be considered only as the last resort for species’ conservation, when habitat destruction is imminent, it may be the only means to preserve a species. With over half the known, wild federally endangered Crenulate leadplant (Amorpha herbacea var. crenulata), Fabaceae, growing on unprotected land slated for development, preserving this unprotected population was critical. We rescued whole plants, cuttings, and seeds for an experimental translocation. Into a restored pine rockland, once dominated by the invasive exotic tree Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), we transplanted plants from different sources and of different sizes. Plants used were rescued from an unprotected site, seedlings, and 1‐, 2‐, and 7‐year‐old plants from Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s ex situ collection, creating a novel population in a new habitat. We also evaluated which propagule type and source had the best survival, growth, and reproduction. After 40 months, overall transplant survival was 71%. Large whole plants, rescued and nursery grown, had the best survival rates (86 and 78%), whereas cuttings had 67% survival and seedlings had only 26% survival. The restored site, once nearly a monoculture of S. terebinthifolius, is now dominated by 104 native plant species, including 17 naturally recruited state listed, plus the one translocated federally endangered plant species. In addition, one federally threatened snake species was observed on the site. These studies demonstrate that botanic garden collections not only play a vital role in the conservation of species’ genetic diversity but also can be used as source material for habitat restoration.  相似文献

Summary We compare the behavior of the genetic distance between individuals in evolving populations for three stochastic models.In the first model reproduction is asexual and the distribution of genetic distances reflects the genealogical tree of the population. This distribution fluctuates greatly in time, even for very large populations.In the second model reproduction is sexual with random mating allowed between any pair of individuals. In this case, the population becomes homogeneous and the genetic distance between pairs of individuals has small fluctuations which vanish in the limit of an infinitely large population.In the third model reproduction is still sexual but instead of random mating, mating only occurs between individuals which are genetically similar to each other. In that case, the population splits spontaneously into species which are in reproductive isolation from one another and one observes a steady state with a continual appearance and extinction of species in the population. We discuss this model in relation to the biological theory of speciation and isolating mechanisms.We also point out similarities between these three models of evolving populations and the theory of disordered systems in physics. Experimentally determined ranges of thermal tolerance and requirements for completion of the life history of some 60 seaweed species from the North Atlantic Ocean were compared with annual temperature regimes at their geographic boundaries. In all but a few species, thermal responses accounted for the location of boundaries. Distribution was restricted by: (a) lethal effects of high or low temperatures preventing survival of the hardiest life history stage (often microthalli), (b) temperature requirements for completion of the life history operating on any one process (i.e. [sexual] reproduction, formation of macrothalli or blades), (c) temperature requirements for the increase of population size (through growth or the formation of asexual propagules). Optimum growth/reproduction temperatures or lethal limits of the non-hardiest stage (often macrothalli) were irrelevant in explaining distribution. In some species, ecotypic differentiation in thermal responses over the distribution range influenced the location of geographic boundaries, but in many other species no such ecotypic differences were evident. Specific daylength requirements affected the location of boundaries only when interacting with temperature. The following types of thermal responses could be recognised, resulting in characteristic distribution patterns: (A) Species endemic to the (warm) temperate eastern Atlantic had narrow survival ranges (between ca 5 and ca 25°C) preventing occurrence in NE America. In species with isomorphic life histories without very specific temperature requirements for reproduction, northern and southern boundaries in Eur/Africa are set by lethal limits. Species with heteromorphic life histories often required high and/or low temperatures to induce reproduction in one or both life history phases which further restricted distribution. (B) Species endemic to the tropical western Atlantic also had narrow survival ranges (between ca 10 and ca 35°C). Northern boundaries are set by low, lethal winter temperatures. Thermal properties would potentially allow occurrence in the (sub) tropical eastern Atlantic, but the ocean must have formed a barrier to dispersal. No experimental evidence is so far available for tropical species with an amphi-Atlantic distribution. (C) Tropical to temperate species endemic to the western Atlantic had broad survival ranges (<0 to ca 35°C). Northern boundaries are set by low summer temperatures preventing (growth and) reproduction. Thermal properties would permit occurrence in the (sub)tropical eastern Atlantic, but along potential “stepping stones” for dispersal in the northern Atlantic (Greenland, Iceland, NW Europe) summer temperatures would be too low for growth. (D) In most amphi-Atlantic (tropical-) temperate species, northern boundaries are set by low summer temperatures preventing reproduction or the increase of population size. On European shores, species generally extended into regions with slightly lower summer temperatures than in America, probably because milder winters allow survival of a larger part of the population. (E) Amphi-Atlantic (Arctic-) temperate species survived at subzero temperatures. In species with isomorphic life histories not specifically requiring low temperatures for reproduction, southern boundaries are set by lethally high summer temperatures on both sides of the Atlantic. None of the species survived temperatures over 30°C which prevents tropical occurrence. Species with these thermal responses are characterized by distribution patterns in which southern boundaries in Eur/Africa lie further south than those in eastern N America because of cooler summers. In most species with heteromorphic life histories (or crustose and erect growth forms), low temperatures were required for formation of the macrothalli (either directly or through the induction of sexual reproduction). These species have composite southern boundaries in the north Atlantic Ocean. On American coasts, boundaries are set by lethally high summer temperatures, on European coasts by winter temperatures too high for the induction of macrothalli. Species with this type of thermal responses are characterized by distribution patterns in which the boundaries in Eur/Africa lie further north than those in eastern N America because of warmer winters. Betula glandulosa Michx. (Betulaceae) at Tarr Inlet, Baffin Island, Northwest Territories reproduces primarily by vegetative layering with little, if any, viable seed production or seedling recruitment. Information from polymorphic enzyme loci revealed 15 three-locus genotypes with a single genotype usually dominating each of the nine sampled sites. Clonal reproduction combined with self-incompatibility may be one factor contributing to a decreased seed set by reducing the probability of xenogamy. However, multiple genotypes were found at some sites providing an opportunity for cross compatible pollen to effect fertilization. The lack of seed set in these areas appears to be due to additional factors inhibiting sexual reproduction. Based on pollen records, the present limited distribution of Betula glandulosa on Baffin Island represents the remnants of once more widely distributed populations, and the failure of sexual reproduction at the northern edge of its range may be responsible for the decline in abundance. Genotypic diversity observed in the Tarr Inlet area appears to be residual from a once sexually reproducing population. No evidence was found for differential selection of genotypes indicating that random processes are probably eroding the genotypic diversity during the decrease of population size in this species.  相似文献

The prevalence of sexual reproduction of animal species is a paradox for evolutionary theory since it remains unclear whether the evolutionary benefits of sexual reproduction outweigh the costs. One attempt at explaining the maintenance of sex is the Tangled Bank hypothesis: Sexual reproduction shuffles around alleles through crossing over and recombination, resulting in a wide range of individuals, some of whom will be able to survive in the harshest of environments with low and dwindling food resources. Whereas, with respect to clonally reproduced individuals there is arguably less genetic variation so that if food resources start to fluctuate, these individuals may not be able to survive under the new conditions. In our study, we conducted individual based modeling computer simulations using the program EcoSim to investigate two hypotheses related to fluctuating resources: First, in the context of fluctuating resources, populations of sexual species will outpace the populations of asexual species who are unable to adapt to changing conditions. The second hypothesis that we investigated is that with respect to facultative species there will be an increase in sexual reproduction and a decrease in asexual reproduction as a response to fluctuating resources. The control runs involved relatively stable food resources for obligate sexual, obligate asexual and facultatively reproducing prey species, whereas the experimental runs involved unstable fluctuating resources. Although we found that population levels were higher for obligate sexual prey vs. obligate asexual prey, this was not due to the manipulation of the independent variable, food resources, since these results were consistent across experimental, and control runs. However, in terms of the runs for facultative species, we found that in experimental runs, there was a discernably lower level of asexual reproduction and a slight increase in sexual reproduction in the later stages of the runs, which is likely a response to fluctuating resources. These results tend to confirm the hypothesis that in terms of facultative species, there will be a decrease in asexual reproduction and an increase in sexual reproduction in response to fluctuating resources. Moreover, we found that these features may be evolutionary in nature rather than simply a matter of phenotypic plasticity, which to the best of our knowledge is not a result in any other simulation or empirical study on Tangled Bank with respect to facultative species. Our study therefore contributes to the ongoing debate of whether the switch to sex in facultative species is the result of phenotypic plasticity or evolutionary in character.  相似文献

Life cycle strategies of rotifers in Lake Peipsi (Estonia) were examined. Bisexual (mictic) reproduction was detected in 26 species. Life cycle patterns were determined for 17 species. All three basic life cycle patterns were represented, with some evidence of intraspecific variability. The midcycle pattern, with mixis occurring near the population maximum, prevailed. Extended mixis was observed in littoral populations of Polyarthra luminosa and P. remata. Most species probably are monocyclic. Polyarthra dolichoptera and Synchaeta oblonga may be dicyclic. Mictic periods were not detected in Conochilus hippocrepis and C. unicornis, which probably are acyclic in L. Peipsi. Mictic ratios and egg ratios were calculated for some of the dominant species. The highest amictic egg ratios were observed slightly before or at the population maxima. High mictic ratios (1.0) indicated very intense bisexual reproduction in populations of A. fissa, P. dolichoptera and S. verrucosa. Definite periods of bisexual reproduction could not be distinguished in the rotifer community. During May–October, the spread of mictic reproduction merely reflects the general seasonal distribution of rotifers. Their life cycle strategies represent specific adaptations to unpredictability of their habitat. The results of the study confirm that mixis is an anticipatory event, and not a response to environment deterioration, or an ending of a rotifer population cycle.  相似文献

We present experimental data on the reproduction patterns of three sympatric sibling rotifer species, belonging to the Brachionus plicatilis complex, as they compete for food. Variation existed in the amount and pattern of sexual reproduction among the three cyclical parthenogenetic species. Competitive exclusion between the three Brachionus species was related to a higher investment in sexual reproduction by the inferior competitor. In general, no correlation was found between sexual reproduction and population density in a given species. However, when pairs of competing species were compared, a negative relationship between sexual investment differences (between species) and average population density differences was frequently found. From the results we conclude that: (1) the characteristic sexual pattern of each species has some implications for the competitive outcome; (2) allocation of resources into sexual reproduction does not mediate coexistence; and (3) the response of sexual reproduction to competitive interaction is unlikely to determine competition outcome. Nevertheless, our results suggest that the competitively inferior species invests more in sexual reproduction, as a response to resource limitation, which would accelerate its exclusion.  相似文献

Activity of endogenous cytokinin of cuttings was investigated in relation to the process of rotting. The levels of cytokinin in hardwood cuttings of easy-to-root Populus × euramericana (Dode) Guinier and difficult-to-root Populus tremula L. were monitored at various stages of root formation. In cuttings of P. tremula was found a higher cytokinin activity than in P. × euramericana and this condition persisted throughout the rooting period. There was a general initial decrease of cytokinin activity in both upper and lower halves of cuttings of both species. The declining level was reversed in the easy-to-root species when roots had formed and to a lesser extent in the difficult-to-root species when leaves expanded. In both cases this increase was relatively higher in the lower halves than in the upper halves.  相似文献

对中国特有珍稀濒危植物绣球茜(Dunnia sinensis Tutcher)开展了分布范围、种群大小、生境特征、繁殖技术和保护状况研究。研究结果表明,绣球茜主要分布于广东省境内龙门县南昆山省级自然保护区、台山市北峰山森林公园、台山市古兜山林场和阳春市八甲峨凰嶂省级自然保护区、新会市崖西镇鹅坑水库、珠海高栏岛东侧海岸、电白县罗坑镇马房村等7个地点的公路边坡次生疏林或荒坡上,其所在群落的植物多样性较低,绣球茜是阳生性种类,其主要伴生种是芒萁(Dicranopteris linearis Underw)。绣球茜所在群落的土壤为酸性赤红壤,土层较薄,养分含量较高。该种野外个体约有2380株,因公路、水库和工厂建设导致绣球茜丧失栖息地是导致其种群减少的主要原因。本文所研究的4个地点的绣球茜种群,有台山市北峰山和龙门县南昆山的2个种群处于衰退中。根据世界自然保护联盟(International Union for Conservation of Nature,IUCN)标准,该种可列为极濒危级(CR)。绣球茜的种子在湿润河沙+泥炭生境下自然发芽率仅8%,生根剂ABT、萘乙酸、IBA吲哚-3-丁酸浸泡后的扦插条存活率为分别为13.3%、20.0%和20.0%。建议:(1)对该种加强就地保护,对保护区外的分布点设立保护小区,同时防止保护小区内乔木层郁闭影响绣球茜的更新;(2)对所有分布点的植株进行有遗传多样性代表性的迁地保护;(3)开展全球变化背景下的野外回归;(4)在引种驯化的基础上开展种苗生产和栽培基质等商品化生产研发。研究结果对这类需要适度干扰的珍稀濒危植物的保护和可持续利用有参考价值。  相似文献

SUMMARY. The distribution of twenty species of Naididae found in seventeen lakes in North Wales and Shropshire is described. Fewer species were observed in the mountain lakes in Snowdonia in comparison to the more productive lakes of Anglesey and Shropshire.
Substrate was an important factor influencing the distribution of naids within lakes, A small number of sexually mature individuals was found in more productive lakes in the summer and autumn months. Sexually mature individuals of Stylaria lacustris were cultured in the laboratory; the population doubled its numbers, by asexual reproduction, in 12 days at 15°C. In Llyn Coron a natural population of S. lacustris doubled its numbers in 40 days. The gut contents of S. lacustris consisted of periphyton.  相似文献

掌叶木(Handeliodendron bodinieri),是残遗于我国石灰岩地区的单种属特有种之一.因人为影响,生境特殊及自身特性,资源稀少,被列为国家一级重点保护野生植物.为了解掌叶木种群结构与动态以及空间分布格局特征,采用样地并结合无样地取样技术对掌叶木种群进行调查,绘制径级结构和高度级结构图、应用点格局进行分析,并采用Ripley's K(d)函数有效地描述种群空间属性.同时采用点到点距比率法进行格局计算.结果表明,掌叶木种群幼苗严重不足,种群呈衰退趋势;种群空间分布主要呈随机分布;掌叶木种群的分布格局受物种本身的繁殖特性、岩溶石山的生境特点以及种内种间的竞争等的共同影响.  相似文献
