Summary We examined the demographic costs of Chaoborus-induced defensive spine structures in Daphnia pulex. Our aim was to assess the role of resource limitation and the interaction effects of limiting food level and antipredator structures on fitness of D. pulex and to pinpoint those life stages that are most sensitive to changes in the defence regime. Chaoborus-induced and typical morphotypes of D. pulex were reared at high and low food concentrations. Instar-based matrix population models were used to quantify the effects of predator-induction, food and their interaction on fitness of D. pulex. Predator-induction caused a statistically significant reduction in fitness at low food levels, but not at high food levels. Sensitivity analyses revealed that the fitness effects were primarily due to changes in the growth rate in instars 1–5, and secondarily to small reductions in the fertility of instars 5–10. The interaction between Chaoborus exposure and low food concentration was negative, and mediated through growth and fertility components. Both these components were reduced more in the Chaoborus-exposed, low food treatment than would be expected in the absence of interaction.  相似文献

The effects of chemicals released by fish and Chaoborus larvae on some life history traits in Daphnia pulex were studied in an in situ enclosure experiment. The mean size of Daphnia individuals was smaller in the presence of fish-released cues. Also the minimal size of an egg bearing female in the presence of fish exudates was smaller than in the population exposed to the chemicals released by Chaoborus larvae as well as in the control population. Fish-released chemicals caused the increase in clutch size in Daphnia. There were no statistically significant differences between the studied life history parameters of the control and Chaoborus treatments. The results are discussed in reference to recent laboratory research.  相似文献

The presence of plankton predators may induce altered morphology in their potential prey. To date, the mechanism of induction and adaptive value of such defensive responses have been examined in the laboratory. This study investigated the morphological defense structures induced by the invertebrate predator Chaoborus in two coexisting Daphnia species, D. pulex and D. rosea, in the field. In Piscivore Lake (Gr?fenhain, Germany), continuous and intense biomanipulation had led to near elimination of planktivorous fish and greatly increased abundances of Chaoborus (up to >10 larvae l–1). Here, the density of Chaoborus was manipulated within the lake by an enclosure/exclosure setup and resulting morphological responses of Daphnia spp. were investigated in situ. Three replicate enclosures (4.6 m3) contained no Chaoborus (predator exclusion bags), whereas Chaoborus entered three others at ambient densities (predator enclosures). In both species of Daphnia, formation of neckteeth and elongation of the tail spine were recorded in the predator enclosures, but not in the predator exclusion treatments. Additionally, D. rosea responded to predator inclusion with an increase of the size at first reproduction. Despite the induced defense structures, the presence of Chaoborus caused increased mortality of both Daphnia species. In addition, Chaoborus affected the coexistence of the two populations of Daphnia by causing higher relative mortality in D. rosea. Neckteeth formation was always more pronounced in D. pulex than in D. rosea of the same size. Neckteeth were induced specifically in vulnerably sized juvenile instars of D. pulex, but were not found in all vulnerable instars of D. rosea. In D. rosea, neckteeth were few or absent in the ephippial hatchlings, and neckteeth formation ceased before juveniles reached a body size outside the range that larger larval stages of Chaoborus could ingest. This study provides the first experimental demonstration in the field of the inducibility of morphological defense structures in Daphnia at ambient densities of Chaoborus larvae, and quantifies these in situ responses. This expands on earlier observations of a correlation between predator density in the field and the expression of neckteeth in Daphnia. The term ”maximum size for neckteeth formation” (MSNF) is defined as the limit in body size above which no production of neckteeth was evident. This limit was used to distinguish the size classes of Daphnia that show a sensitive response to Chaoborus kairomone. This new term may be used for further comparisons among species and among different types of predator-induced responses as well as for the evaluation of the adaptive value of defense structures. The predatory effects of a Dipteran insect, Chaoborus, on the competition between exotic cladoceran Daphnia lumholtzi and two natives, D. catawba and D. pulex, were studied for a period of three years in a freshwater reservoir, Lake James, North Carolina (USA). D. lumholtzi was first encountered in September 1997 and it was present only between August and October when population densities of native species were low and that of Chaoborus sp. was high. The patterns observed in the population dynamics of the exotic D. lumholtzi and two natives, Chaoborus suggest that a predator mediated coexistence phenomenon might be taking place in Lake James. The strong positive correlation between Chaoborus and D. lumholtzi and the negative correlation between Chaoborus, D. catawba and D. pulex is supportive of this hypothesis.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the interactions between the cyanobacteria (Microcystis aeruginosa) and the potential grazer (Ochromonas sp.) with regard to colony formation. Two kinds of treatments were carried out: (i) In the dialyse experiment Microcystis aeruginosa and Ochromonas sp. were physically separated by a dialyse tubing. (ii) In the contact experiment interactions between Microcystis aeruginosa, heterotrophic bacteria and Ochromonas sp. in different concentrations were investigated. In one treatment where the predator Ochromonas sp. came in direct contact with Microcystis, aggregates were formed.In the contact experiment, there were some interactions between the predator Ochromonas sp. and the two groups of prey, Microcystis aeruginosa and heterotrophic bacteria. When exposed to a low initial Ochromonas sp. concentration, Microcystis aeruginosa decreased and then remained stable in concentration. Ochromonas sp. switched to feed on heterotrophic bacteria and increased. At a high initial Ochromonas sp. concentration Microcystis was grazed down.  相似文献

Dense swarms of Daphnia longispina (up to 4000 animals l–1) were recorded along the littoral zone in a lake where Chaoborus flavicans is considered the main predator. D. longispina coexisted with D. pulex, but there were no D. pulex in the littoral swarms. Swarms were less dense at night (about 1/10 the density), and D. longispina exhibited diel horizontal migrations by aggregating in the littoral during the day and spreading out at night. Laboratory experiments showed that Chaoborus capture efficiency on juvenile daphnids was higher in the light compared to darkness, and that Daphnia exhibited a behavioural response to water that had previously contained Chaoborus. We conclude that predation from Chaoborus can be an important factor affecting the distribution patterns of Daphnia observed in this lake. The behavioural experiments indicated that this influence might be partly mediated by chemical agents.  相似文献

Functional response curves of fourth instar larvae ofChaoborus flavicans preying on two size classes ofDaphnia longispina were examined throughout three summer seasons in a small forest lake. Data for each size class were fitted to Holling's disc equation. The parametersa (attack rate) andTh (handling time) were calculated for each prey size from these curves. Attack rate was greater and handling time was shorter for small (0.77 mm) than for large (1.82 mm)Daphnia. In 1:1 mixture of these prey size classes the predation rates ofChaoborus on smallDaphnia at prey densities above 20 l–1 were greater than predicted from the single size-class experiments. The observed predation rates on largeDaphnia were lower than predicted at all prey densities. Since both single size-class and two size-class experiments were run during the same period of time the difference in observed and predicted predation rates could not be attributed to seasonal changes in prey preference ofChaoborus larvae. In experiments with a concentrated mixture of lake zooplankton (dominated byD. longispina)Chaoborus preference forDaphnia decreased as prey body size increased. There was no obvious correlation between selectivity coefficients and size-frequency distributions ofDaphnia. When medium-sizedDaphnia were omitted from calculations the preference of small over large prey did not differ significantly from the predictions of the single size-class model.  相似文献

Chemical cues from a predator Chaoborus sp. induce morphological defense (neck spine) and life history shifts (later reproduction, decreased fecundity but larger juvenile size) in the waterflea Daphnia pulex. These shifts have been interpreted either as costs of defense or as separate adaptation. In order to investigate if the life history shifts can be separated from the morphological defense, Daphnia pulex individuals were exposed to chemical cues from Chaoborus at different stages of life for variable periods. The daphnids that were exposed to Chaoborus started their reproduction later than the controls, although the differences were not statistically significant. Neck spine was induced only if daphnids were exposed to Chaoborus in an early stage of their life. Numbers of eggs produced were not affected by the different treatments, but egg mortality was higher in mothers exposed to Chaoborus. With these treatments it was possible to see neck spine induction without measurable life history changes or costs. On the other hand, irrespective of neck spine presence, the Chaoborus chemical(s) had an effect on Daphnia pulex mothers.Publication no 2159. Although the Chaoborus-induced spined morph of Daphnia pulex survives attacks by Chaoborus over twice as frequently as the typical morph, the spined morph is never found in the absence of Chaoborus. This implies that a disadvantage is associated with the spined morph in the absence of Chaoborus predation. The present study tested the hypothesis that the typical morph has a higher intrinsic rate of increase than the spined morph, by measuring several life history characteristics in controlled laboratory experiments at constant temperature and unlimited food.The results suggest that the spined morph of D. pulex takes longer to reach maturity, is smaller at maturity, but has similar egg number and egg size as the typical morph. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the Chaoborus-induced spined morph is reproductively inferior to the typical morph.  相似文献

I develop a demographic model that examines the impact of Chaoborus predation on the population dynamics and life history of Daphnia. Predation effects are determined through analysis of the various components of the predator-prey interaction (encounter, attack, strike efficiency), and are integrated into a stage-classified matrix population model. The model is parameterized with data from interactions between D. pulex and fourth-instar C. americanus. I test this model with two laboratory experiments that examine population growth of D. pulex under the influence of five different levels of Chaoborus predation. With the exception of a single predation treatment in each experiment, the model accurately predicted the observed reduction in Daphnia numbers with increasing Chaoborus predation. I then use this model to investigate the evolution of delayed reproduction in D. pulex that are exposed to Chaoborus. I ask whether delayed reproduction may evolve in Daphnia that are subjected to Chaoborus predation as a trade-off for the benefits of larger body size. The model predicts that the effectiveness of such a life history trade-off depends on the relative sizes of predator and prey. In some interactions between Chaoborus and Daphnia, increasing Daphnia body length by as little as 5% from base growth trajectories sufficiently increases fitness (by reducing vulnerability to Chaoborus predation) to compensate for the cost of delayed reproduction. In other interactions, however, increased body length provides no benefit to Daphnia (and may even reduce fitness), and selection would act against the evolution of delayed reproduction. It has been proposed that the predator-induced defensive neck spine in Daphnia pulex has a demographic cost. Our results show that this cost is not merely an allocation cost related to the formation and maintenance of the neck spine. In a life table experiment, we tested whether spine induction and life history traits in D. pulex are affected by different invertebrate predators: first and third instar Chaoborus, fourth instar Mochlonyx and two size classes of Notonecta and Dytiscus larvae. D. pulex showed sensitivity to the different predators. Predator-exposure affected one or more of the following life history traits of D. pulex: the timing of first reproduction, clutch size, and growth. In some cases, exposure to predators altered life history traits when neck spine induction did not occur. These shifts in life history traits occurring in the absence of spine induction may be caused by behavioral or physiological changes triggered by the predators.  相似文献

The dynamics of planktonic cyanobacteria in eutrophicated freshwaters play an important role in formation of annual summer blooms, yet overwintering mechanisms of these water bloom forming cyanobacteria remain unknown. The responses to darkness and low temperature of three strains (unicellular Microcystis aeruginosa FACHB-905, colonial M. aeruginosa FACHB-938, and a green alga Scenedesmus quadricauda FACHB-45) were investigated in the present study. After a 30-day incubation under darkness and low temperature, cell morphology, cell numbers, chlorophyll a, photosynthetic activity (ETRmax and I k), and malodialdehyde (MDA) content exhibited significant changes in Scenedesmus. In contrast, Microcystis aeruginosa cells did not change markedly in morphology, chlorophyll a, photosynthetic activity, and MDA content. The stress caused by low temperature and darkness resulted in an increase of the antioxidative enzyme-catalase (CAT) in all three strains. When the three strains re-grew under routine cultivated condition subjected to darkness and low temperature, specific growth rate of Scenedesmus was lower than that of Microcystis. Flow cytometry (FCM) examination indicated that two distinct types of metabolic response to darkness and low temperature existed in the three strains. The results from the present study reveal that the cyanobacterium Microcystis, especially colonial Microcystis, has greater endurance and adaptation ability to the stress of darkness and low temperature than the green alga Scenedesmus. InPseudomonas aeruginosa, the products of thexcp genes are required for the secretion of exoproteins across the outer membrane. Despite structural conservation of the Xcp components, secretion of exoproteins via the Xcp pathway is generally not found in heterologous organisms. To study the specificity of this protein secretion pathway, thexcp genes of another fluorescent pseudomonad, the plant growth-promotingPseudomonas putida strain WCS358, were cloned and characterized. Nucleotide sequence analysis revealed the presence of at least five genes, i.e.,xcpP, Q, R, S, andT, with homology toxcp genes ofP. aeruginosa. Unlike the genetic organization inP. aeruginosa, where thexcp cluster consists of two divergently transcribed operons, thexcp genes inP. putida are all oriented in the same direction, and probably comprise a single operon. Upstream ofxcpP inP. putida, an additional open reading frame, with no homolog inP. aeruginosa, was identified, which possibly encodes a lipoprotein. Mutational inactivation ofxcp genes inP. putida did not affect secretion, indicating that no proteins are secreted via the Xcp system under the growth conditions tested, and that an alternative secretion system is operative. To obtain some insight into the secretory pathway involved, the amino acid sequence of the N-terminus of the major extracellular protein was determined. The protein could be identified as flagellin. Mutations in thexcpQ andR genes ofP. aeruginosa could not be complemented by introduction of the correspondingxcp genes ofP. putida. However, expression of a hybrid XcpR protein, composed of the N-terminal one-third ofP. aeruginosa XcpR and the C-terminal two-thirds ofP. putida XcpR, did restore protein secretion in aP. aeruginosa xcpR mutant.  相似文献

Antimicrobial activity of toxin produced by a freshwater bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa has been studied. When tested against certain green algae, cyanobacteria, heterotrophic bacteria and fungi, the toxin inhibited growth of only green algae and cyanobacteria. The toxin has been partially purified employing Thin layer chromatography (TLC) and High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) techniques and appears to be microcystin-LR (leucine–arginine). Both crude and purified toxins showed toxicity to mice, the clinical symptoms in test mice being similar to those produced by hepatotoxin. Purified toxin at a concentration of 50 g ml–1 caused complete inhibition of growth followed by cell lysis in Nostoc muscorum and Anabaena BT1 after 6 days of toxin addition. Addition of toxin (25 g ml–1) to the culture suspensions of the Nostoc and Anabaena strains caused instant and drastic loss of O2 evolution. Furthermore a marked reduction (about 87%) in the 14CO2 uptake was also observed at a concentration of 50 g ml–1. Besides its inhibitory effects on photosynthetic processes, M. aeruginosa toxin (50 g ml–1) also caused 90% loss of nitrogenase activity after 8 h of its addition. Experiments performed with 14C-labelled toxin indicate that the toxin uptake by cyanobacterial cells occurs both in light and dark. These results demonstrate that the toxin is strongly algicidal and point to the possibility that it may have an important role in establishment and maintenance of toxic blooms of M. aeruginosa in freshwater ecosystems. The relative significance of the hepatotoxic effect and the algicidal effect of the toxin is discussed with reference both to survival and dominance of M. aeruginosa in nature.  相似文献

In the experiment we investigated the effect of grazing by different sorts of zooplankton on the induction of defensive morphology in the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. The results showed that protozoan flagellate Ochromonas sp. grazing could induce colony formation in M. aeruginosa, whereas M. aeruginosa populations in the control and the grazing treatments of copepod Eudiaptomus graciloides, cladoceran Daphnia magna, and rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus were still strongly dominated by unicells and paired cells and no colony forma occurred. In the protozoan grazing treatment, the proportion of unicells reduced from 83.2% to 15.7%, while the proportion of cells in colonial form increased from 0% to 68.7% of the population at the end of the experiment. The occurrence of a majority of colonial M. aeruginosa being in the treatment with flagellates, indicated that flagellate grazing on solitary cells could induce colony formation in M. aeruginosa. The colonies could effectively deter flagellate from further grazing and thus increase the survival of M. aeruginosa. The colony formation in M. aeruginosa may be considered as an inducible defense against flagellate grazing under the conditions that toxin cannot deter flagellate from grazing effectively.  相似文献

Contamination of the culture water by high densities of phantom midge larvae, Chaoborus sp. resulted in size diminution, retarded reproduction and decrease in the clutch size of D. pulex, and size diminution of D. magna. Furthermore, D. pulex suffered heavy mortality. The results are discussed in the context of the hypothesis that energy is expended in the formation of defensive cyclomorphic spines. Grazing and survival of larvae of the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, on a green alga and cyanobacteria were studied in laboratory experiments. Clearance rates of the larvae were determined for Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (green alga), two non-toxic and two toxic Microcystis aeruginosa strains (Cyanobacteria). Clearance rates of larvae on non-toxic Microcystis were significantly higher than on toxic Microcystis. The clearance rate on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was in between the clearance rates on toxic and non-toxic Microcystis strains and not significantly different from them. Effects of toxicity of Microcystis on the survival of zebra mussel larvae was investigated in a short-term experiment. Survival of larvae fed toxic Microcystis was lower than that of larvae fed non-toxic Microcystis, but higher than that of starved larvae. This may imply that, for survival of zebra mussel larvae, it is better to have bad quality (toxic) food than no food.  相似文献

Summary We have analyzed 18 kb of DNA in and upstream of thedefective chorion-1 (dec-1) locus of the eight known species of themelanogaster species subgroup ofDrosophila. The restriction maps ofD. simulans, D. mauritiana, D. sechellia, D. erecta, andD. orena are shown to have basically the restriction map ofD. melanogaster, whereas the maps ofD. teissieri andD. yakuba were more difficult to align. However, the basic amount of DNA and sequence arrangement appear to have been conserved in these species. A small deletion of varying length (65–200 bp) is found in a repeated sequence of the central transcribed region ofD. melanogaster, D. simulans, andD. erecta. Restriction site mapping indicated that thedec-1 gene is highly conserved in themelanogaster species subgroup. However, sequence comparison revealed that the amount of nucleotide and amino acid substitution in the repeated region is much larger than in the 5 translated region. The 5 flanking region showed noticeable restriction site polymorphisms between species. Based on calculations from the restriction maps a dendrogram was derived that supports earlier published phylogenetic relationships within themelanogaster species subgroup except that theerecta-orena pair is placed closer to themelanogaster complex than toD. teissieri andD. yakuba.  相似文献

Summary It has been proposed that morphological defenses against predation have demographic costs. We measured the cost of a predator-induced morphological defense, using predaceous phantom midge larvae Chaoborus americanus (Insecta, Diptera) and the prey species Daphnia pulex (Crustacea, Cladocera). The induced defense is a neck tooth (and other pleiotropic structures) developed in juvenile D. pulex in the presence of C. americanus. Laboratory life table experiments, in the absence of predation, indicated the population growth rate of typical D. pulex was 11% to 39% greater than that of D. pulex exposed to C. americanus extract, or C. americanus-conditioned water. The reduction in population growth rate was most frequently associated with an increase in the time between birth and first reproduction. Induced individuals required twenty more hours at 23°C, and twenty five more hours at 20°C, to develop to the age of first reproduction. Under limiting food conditions age-specific survivorship and the number of offspring produced per female by the induced form were reduced relative to the typical form. As a result, the difference in population growth rates among forms was greater at the low food level as indicated by a highly significant food by form interaction effect. In addition to neck teeth and lowered reproductive rates, the offspring of induced form individuals had significantly longer tail-spines (7.2–7.5%), and primiparous adults from the induction treatment were significantly shorter than controls (3–8%).  相似文献

Daphnia can alter its vertical position in the water column in response to chemical cues from predators. In this study we tested the hypothesis that a Daphnia pulex clone with little evolutionary exposure to cyanobacteria would move away from patches of cyanobacteria (Anabaena affinis and A. flos-aquae) which contain potent endotoxins. Daphnia was censused at 2 h intervals for 6 h in laboratory columns in which there was a steep vertical gradient of cyanobacteria. Data were analyzed by repeated-measures ANOVA. Control (no Anabaena) and experimental columns showed no significant differences in Daphnia distributions. Daphnia in experimental columns frequently moved into areas with dense concentrations of Anabaena and stayed there for long periods of time. Our results show that this D. pulex clone does not exhibit a rapid (within 6 h) avoidance response to toxic Anabaena.  相似文献
