Comparative analysis of egg chorion architecture by scanning and transmission electron microscopy is reported in about 50 species of stick insects (Phasmatodea). Particular attention has been paid to: (1) synthesis and structure of egg shell layers; (2) egg shape; (3) morphology of the external chorionic surface; (4) position and structure of the micropylar plate and its cup; (5) morphology and details of the operculum, including capitulum or pseudocapitulum; and (6) posterior pole differentiation (the so-called polar mound), The taxonomic value of the various characters is discussed: some are clearly species-specific, while others (such as general egg shape and micropylar plate) appear to reflect phylogenetic relationships of higher rank. Intraspecific features, such as the fine chorionic and opercular patterns of Bacillus and Clonopsis, have been recognized. In natural hybrids, egg chorion architectures were related to that of the parent species, resembling one of the parents in some cases and being intermediate between the 2. The study of the Phasmatodea egg can provide much taxonomic information that is useful in the definition of natural groups.  相似文献

Centaurium pulchellum is an annual herb native to Europe, but introduced in South America, where it is widely used in the preparation of digestive infusions and bitter drinks. In this species, a wide variation in the aperture pattern of pollen grains was reported and has been attributed to environmental factors or irregularities at meiosis. For this reason, cytological and palynological studies have been undertaken on two different populations. The pollen grain analysis showed that some types are more frequent within each population, but the most common forms were the typical 3-colporate and 4-colporate. The cytological analysis revealed that the analyzed populations of C. pulchellum have chromosome number 2n = 36. The presence of tetravalents at meiosis strongly suggests that these populations are autotetraploid based on x = 9. The meiotic behavior showed a significant percentage of irregularities in different phases: off-plate bivalents, precocious segregation, laggard chromosomes, bridges, and cytomixis. However these irregularities are not related to the variation in the aperture pattern of pollen grains. The heteromorphism in the pollen grains observed in C. pulchellum could be a normal condition to which the species is well adapted.  相似文献

The new stick insect family Gallophasmatidae, based on Gallophasma longipalpis gen. et sp.n. , from the Earliest Eocene French amber has a pattern of tegmina venation typical of Archaeorthoptera, also present in at least some Mesozoic ‘Phasmatodea’. On the other hand, Gallophasma displays in its body anatomy some apomorphies of the extant Euphasmatodea, e.g. fusion of metatergum and abdominal tergum 1, correlated with the reduction of abdominal sternum 1 to lateral triangular sclerites. A unique autapomorphy of Gallophasma is the presence of annulated and apparently multi‐segmented or pseudo‐segmented cerci; all other Phasmatodea have one‐segmented cerci. The venation of the tegmina of Gallophasma differs from that of extant winged Phasmatodea in the plesiomorphic absence of a knob‐like dorsal eversion. This and other differences in the wing venation between extant and extinct Phasmatodea might have been caused by the loss of wings at some point in the evolutionary history of the order and their secondary gain in a subclade of the extant phasmids.  相似文献

The aim of this study is determining the different patterns of egg nests and the morphological differences between the specimens of Cicadatra persica Kirkalidy, 1909 (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) distributed in fruit orchards in Erneh located on AL-Sheikh mountain south west of Syria. The appearance of 80 egg nests was studied, and the results showed that there were two basic patterns of egg nests laid by Cicadatra persica, 90% of the egg nests were of the first pattern (consists of several adjacent slits), while 10% of them were of the second pattern (consists of several divergent slits). A random sample consisting of 300 specimens (150 males and 150 females) were also studied concentrating on the differences in the color of the supra-antennal plate and in the number of spurs on the tibia of the hind legs. The results showed that there were two basic patterns of individuals based on the differences in the color of supra-antennal plate. The first pattern (individuals with yellow supra-antennal plates), constituted more than 90%, and the second one (individuals with black supra-antennal plates) constituted less than 10%. The results also showed that there were 27 different patterns based on the number of spurs on the tibia of the hind legs. One of them was a common pattern (2, 3) whose individuals have 2 spurs on the upper side of the tibia of the hind legs and 3 spurs on the lateral side of the tibia of the hind legs. The total percent of this common pattern was 76%. The other 26 patterns were different from each other, and the total percent of all these different patterns was 24%.  相似文献

Samples of 31 populations of Parthenium hyserophorus from varius areas of its world distribution were examined for their sesquiterpene lactone composition. On the basis of the occurrence of sesquiterpene lactones the samples were divided into seven chemical types. The most common is a type represented by plants containing parthenin as a major sesquiterpene lactone, and coronopilin and tetraneurin-A. All samples from North and Central America, Venezuela, South Africa, India, Australia, and one sample from Jamaica belong to this type. This suggests that P. hysterophorus recently introduced to South Africa, India and Australia originates in North and (or) Central America. On the other hand, there is a great diversity among examined South American populations. Plants from these populations usually contain hymenin which is their major sesquiterpene lactone. Some populations may also contain coronopilin, hysterin, and dihydroisoparthenin. A high diversity in the sesquiterpene lactone chemistry and the morphological differences between individual South American populations of this species indicate the possible existence of several taxa.  相似文献

1. Life history traits play a central role in adaptation to specific environmental conditions. Egg development time, hatchling, and egg batch size in 10 populations of the soil‐dwelling collembolan species Folsomia quadrioculata (Tullberg, 1871) from diverse habitats across arctic and temperate regions, ranging in latitude from 43 to 81°N were studied. 2. For all traits, 15 °C was used as the reference temperature. Phenotypic plasticity was studied by changing temperature to 10 and 20 °C in hatchling size, and to 20 °C in egg development time. The effect of latitude, climatic zone, and summer temperature at their sites of sampling was tested to address the hypotheses that populations from cooler areas would have (i) a faster temperature‐dependent egg development, (ii) a larger hatchling size, (iii) smaller egg batches and (iv) higher phenotypic plasticity 3. The first and fourth hypothesis were not supported, whereas the second and third were partly supported when including the whole latitudinal gradient, but not within regions. Plasticity showed a complex pattern, including large differences between populations from similar macroclimates and considerable similarity between some populations from contrasting climates. Small effects of latitude and macroclimatic variables emphasised that local climate and microhabitat should be taken into account when evaluating thermal conditions as possible drivers of population‐specific differences in soil‐dwelling ectotherms. 4. There was a trade‐off between egg batch and hatchling sizes. A weak correlation between the population mean egg development time and the mean hatchling size suggested that the populations are, or have been, exposed to differential selection.  相似文献

During the early ontogeny of fishes, the timing and duration of key events such as larval hatching and the switch from endogenous to exogenous feeding largely determine the offspring viability and survival. The aim of the present study was to investigate the life history traits of the early larvae of the mackerel icefish, Champsocephalus gunnari, collected in summer south of the South Shetland Islands in the Bransfield Strait and north of Elephant Island. Through the analysis of sagittal otolith microstructure, we assessed the timing and duration of egg incubation, larval hatching, first exogenous feeding, rate of yolk resorption and body growth rate. Compared to populations living further north (i.e. around South Georgia and Kerguelen Islands), mackerel icefish in the southern Scotia Arc exhibits longer egg incubation (lasting 90–120 days from winter to summer) and delayed hatching time spread over a relatively short period lasting 26 days between January and February. The first exogenous feeding takes place between 13 and 24 days after hatching still in the presence of the yolk-sac, indicating a prolonged mixed feeding afterward. The specific growth rate or daily percentage change in size (G) was 1.9 % SL day?1, corresponding to a daily growth rate at mean size of 0.31 mm day?1. While showing significant differences in early life history traits across their geographical distribution, C. gunnari populations share a common strategy, spawning a small number of large eggs that hatch in relatively large-sized larvae, at a time which may be independent of the timing of pack-ice retreat and onset of the production cycle.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of spermatogenesis and spermatozoa was studied in Timema poppensis Vickery & Sandoval, 1999, a putative basal taxon of Phasmatodea. The apical portion of testis follicles consists of spermatogonial cells with polymorphic nuclei. Primary spermatocytes display very short primary cilia originating from the peripheral centrosomes. Early spermatids develop a conspicuous “nebenkern” consisting of fused mitochondria. They have a single peripheral centriole with microtubular triplets, which expresses a 3.6-μm-long cilium featuring a 9?+?2 axonemal pattern. In a later stage, the centriole and the ciliary shaft displace toward the inner part of the cytoplasm by an infolding of the plasma membrane. Mature spermatids exhibit a derived centriole with microtubule doublets devoid of dynein arms, which is equipped with a dense arc-like outer structure. Ciliary degeneration was not observed during spermiogenesis. Spermatozoa are short flagellate cells about 55–60?μm in length. They are characterized by a three-layered acrosomal complex. The distinctive bell-shaped morphology of the acrosome vesicle is likely an autapomorphic trait of Timema. The flagellum has a 9?+?9?+?2 axoneme, two accessory bodies, two flattened cisterns, and two elongated mitochondrial derivatives. Results support the hypothesis that Phasmatodea, comprising Timema?+?Euphasmatodea, form a monophyletic group. The presence of 17 protofilaments in the wall of accessory microtubules and the flattened configuration of the flagellum are potential apomorphic groundplan features of the order. Within Phasmatodea, a key evolutionary divergence was from the conventional insect spermiogenesis and sperm structure of Timema, to the unusual spermiogenetic process and peculiar sperm structure of Euphasmatodea. As a result, Timema retains more sperm character states found in the polyneopteran ground pattern, while Euphasmatodea have evolved outstanding sperm autapomorphies, like the loss of mitochondria and flattened cisterns, and the presence of strongly expanded accessory bodies.  相似文献

Two species of apple snails, Pomacea canaliculata and Pomacea maculata (formerly Pomacea insularum), have invaded many countries of East and Southeast Asia from their native range in South America. This study investigated the genetic structure of the two species invading these areas. Phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of the nuclear gene elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1α) detected two well-supported clades (Clade C and Clade M). Both P. canaliculata and P. maculata were represented in each clade. Some snails had both Clade C and Clade M EF1α sequences. These results suggest genetic exchange between snails of the two clades. A mating experiment between P. canaliculata with Clade C EF1α sequences and P. maculata with Clade M EF1α sequences resulted in viable F1 progeny under laboratory conditions. The genetic exchange was also inferred in some populations collected from Argentina, suggesting an existence of hybrid in the native range. Simple identification of EF1α types using a restriction enzyme, ApaLI, detected significant geographical structure of the EF1α variants in the invaded area. The divergent geographical structure could have resulted from either the founder effect or the bridgehead effect, although further genetic analysis is needed to clarify this. Average individual egg weight, which is an indicator of egg size, was higher in P. canaliculata than P. maculata in both field and laboratory reared samples, suggesting that some (probably most) P. canaliculata and P. maculata invading East and Southeast Asia still maintain species-specific populations.  相似文献

Many cases of introgressive hybridization have been reported among birds, particularly following introduction to the natural environment of individuals belonging to non-native similar taxa. This appears to be the case for common quail (Coturnix coturnix) in France where wild populations artificially come into contact with domesticated Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) raised for meat and egg production but sometimes released for hunting purposes. In order to highlight the possible existence of gene flows between both taxa, a comparison of nuclear (25 microsatellite loci) and mitochondrial (sequencing and RFLP) DNA polymorphisms was performed on 375 common quails (from France, Spain and Morocco) and 140 Japanese quails (from France and Japan). Genetic diversity was assessed, and analyses (Factorial Correspondence Analysis, Bayesian admixture) of molecular polymorphisms revealed clear differentiation between the two taxa, making it possible to detect for hybrids among quails sampled in the wild. Eight birds expected to be common quail were found to be two pure Japanese quail, one probable backcross to C. japonica, three F1/F2 hybrids, and two probable backcrosses to Coturnix coturnix. These results show that Japanese quails were released and suggest that the two taxa hybridize in the wild. They confirm the urgent need for preventing the release of pure Japanese or hybrid quails to preserve the genetic integrity of C. coturnix. The tools developed for this study should be useful for accurate monitoring of wild quail populations within the framework of avifauna management programs.  相似文献

The population dynamics of the three intertidal oribatid species, Alismobates inexpectatus, Fortuynia atlantica and Carinozetes bermudensis, have been studied on the archipelago of Bermuda over the course of a year. All three species are univoltine, showing a clear seasonal demographic pattern, with reproduction from spring to late autumn and a complete standstill of egg production in winter. A seasonal shift in sex ratio could also be observed in all three species and is supposed to be based on sex-dependent mortality. The subtropical climate of Bermuda allows longer reproductive periods than shown in other intertidal or edaphic temperate species and temperature is supposed to be the main factor influencing the demography of these intertidal dwelling mites. Although all three Bermudian species exhibit the same basic seasonal demographic pattern, there are slight temporal shifts in population dynamics, presumably caused by local microclimatic differences among the populations. Larviparity, shown in other littoral oribatid mites, is clearly absent in the present species.  相似文献

Abstract

The process of primary growth in 2-year-old seedlings of 11 populations of Pinus halepensis Mill. is described. At the end of the first growing season one type of apical structure was observed: type-1, a tuft of primary needles placed close together, surrounding and protecting a meristematic apex.

At the end of the 2nd growing season, three types of apical structure were observed: type-1; type-2, a terminal winter bud; and type-3; a «bud» with characteristics of both type-1 and type-2.

Morphological observation along with an anatomical examination of the winter bud led to the conclusion that the definitive growth pattern in juvenile P. halepensis is monocyclic with a variable number of summer shoots. This growth pattern is reached by some P. halepensis populations in 3–4 years, by contrast, in other pine species two years are usually needed.

The populations studied differed both in growth potential (differences in number of cycles, ratio of first cycle to total growth, growth rates) and in the developmental stages of the apical meristem.

Four groups could be identified: (i) Morocco and Spain, (a limited growth, few cycles, a high ratio of 1st cycle to total growth, and growth in 2nd season almost entirely due to free growth); (ii) Algeria and Greece, (moderate to low growth, a large number of cycles, a low ratio of 1st cycle to total growth, and very early formation of apical structure with preformed primordia); (iii) Israel and Central Italy (a high growth, a large number of cycles, a medium ratio of 1st cycle to total growth, and early formation of apical structure with preformed primordia); (iiii) Greece, France and Italy, which was intermediate between group (i) and the other 2 groups.  相似文献

Recent studies have identified common variants in forkhead box O3 gene (FOXO3) to be strongly associated with longevity in different populations. But studies have not been carried out to analyse the role of common variants in FOXO3 with type 2 diabetes. Since type 2 diabetes is an age related disorder and FOXO proteins play an important role in the regulation of metabolism, we studied the role of common variants in FOXO3 for association with type 2 diabetes. The study was carried out in 994 type 2 diabetic samples and 984 normoglycemic control samples from a South Indian Dravidian population. In our analysis, we found that there was no association between any of the selected SNPs in FOXO3 with type 2 diabetes. Analysis of these SNPs with diabetes related biochemical and clinical parameters also did not reveal any significant association. Haplotype association of SNPs in FOXO3 with type 2 diabetes was observed, but the frequency of the haplotypes was considerably lower and they do not remain significant after correction for multiple testing. In conclusion, we did not observe any association of SNPs in FOXO3 with type 2 diabetes and related parameters suggesting an entirely different mechanism by which these SNPs influence longevity. However additional studies in other populations are required to completely rule out the association of common variants in FOXO3 with type 2 diabetes.  相似文献

Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) (Coleoptera:Bruchidae) is native to parts of Central and South America but has now been spread to many others areas. It commonly infests the seeds of both Lima beans, Phaseolus lunatus, and common beans, Phaseolus vulgaris. Five geographic populations were found to differ in fecundity, patterns of egg distribution, times of development and adult sizes when they were kept under the same conditions. Each population also differed unpredictably from the others in its response to different cultivars of host seed. These differences have been shown to be of considerable importance in determining the potential pest status of the populations and should also promote caution in making predictions about the responses of different populations to new cultivars of bean for agricultural use.  相似文献

Variability of the nucleotide sequences of the second intron of the b1-chain of hemoglobin (Hbb-b1) and complete control region of mitochondrial DNA (D-loop) was studied in aboriginal and synanthropic populations of M. m. wagneri from Central Asia and M. m. gansuensis from South Siberia. A difference in the frequency of the Hbbw1 hemoglobin variant for natural and urban populations of mice was shown. All mice from natural habitats of studied areas have musculus type of mtDNA. Apparently, the substitution of taxon-specific mitochondrial haplotypes of wagneri, and gansuensis might occur due to the absorbing hybridization with nominate subspecies musculus, which is consistent with the results on nuclear DNA (Hbb-b1 gene) obtained in this work. Two differentiated haplogroups among aboriginal subspecies wagneri (d = 0.01), one of which included house mice from Turkmenistan, were discovered for the first time. This may indicate mtDNA introgression from synanthropic forms of Turkmenistan into natural populations of Kazakhstan mice. The type of mtDNA typical for the castaneus subspecies was detected in two individuals from the natural habitat of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan; it had not been encountered in Central Asia before. It has been suggested that the gene flow of nuclear and mitochondrial genomes in microevolution processes in M. musculus is directed from the synanthropic forms towards wild populations.  相似文献

We measured the size of eggs produced by populations of Drosophila melanogaster that had been collected along latitudinal gradients in different continents or that had undergone several years of culture at different temperatures in the laboratory. Australian and South American populations from higher latitudes produced larger eggs when all were compared at a standard temperature. Laboratory populations that had been evolving at 16.5°C produced larger eggs than populations that had evolved at 25°C or 29°C, suggesting that temperature may be an important selective agent in producing the latitudinal clines. Flies from laboratory populations produced larger eggs at an experimental temperature of 16.5°C than at 25°C, and there was no indication of genotype-environment interaction for egg size. Evolution of egg size in response to temperature cannot be accounted for by differences in adult body size between populations. It is not clear which life-history traits are direct targets of thermal selection and which are showing correlated responses, and disentangling these is a task for the future.  相似文献

Background

Interspecies variation in avian egg shape and size is understandable in terms of adaptation, allometry and phylogeny. Within-species variation in egg properties influences offspring fitness and can be explained by differences in allocation of resources into reproductive components of life history in mulidimensionally variable environments. Egg size is inherently traded-off with clutch size, which may also be true of egg shape in some cases. We investigated long-term variation in egg shape and size between two geographically close populations of blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus in relation to clutch size and habitat differences.

Results

The main finding is that there exists a persistent long-lasting pattern of spatial variation of egg size and shape between the two study populations of blue tits, 10 km apart, controlling for clutch size. Eggs in the urban park site were on average larger in volume and less spherical in shape than eggs in the forest site over 12 years of this study. Egg sizes were negatively associated with clutch sizes. Egg shape was not correlated with clutch size.

Conclusions

Our findings suggest that the pattern of variation in egg size and shape results from different trophic richness of the breeding habitats of the study populations, demanding different allocation of resources and, especially, from the contrasting difference in the availability of calcium.
