The Druze community occupies a distinctive niche in the broader context of Israel/Palestine, one which is located in the interstices of various socio-political cross-currents, notably Jewish/Arab and Israeli/Palestinian. Druze Israeli identity is built around a politics of difference and separation from all other population groups residing in this area, yet it is an ambivalent and contradictory designation. This article focuses on those Druze who, through their service in the army, have been used as translators in the military courts in the occupied territories. The preference of Druze for this role relates to the fact that they have both bilingual skills (Hebrew and Arabic) and a socio-political status as 'non-Arab Arabs'. Following a general discussion of the politicization of Druze identity, I analyse the state's uses of Druze bilingualism for the purposes of maintaining and legitimizing the occupation, and the effects that fulfilling such a role have had on those who have functioned in this capacity.  相似文献

Physiological mechanisms of neuronal information processing have been shaped during evolution by a continual interplay between organisms and their sensory surroundings. Thus, when asking for the functional significance of such mechanisms, the natural conditions under which they operate must be considered. This has been done successfully in several studies that employ sensory stimulation under in vivo conditions. These studies address the question of how physiological mechanisms within neurons are properly adjusted to the characteristics of natural stimuli and to the demands imposed on the system being studied. Results from diverse animal models show how neurons exploit natural stimulus statistics efficiently by utilizing specific filtering capacities. Mechanisms that allow neurons to adapt to the currently relevant range from an often immense stimulus spectrum are outlined, and examples are provided that suggest that information transfer between neurons is shaped by the system-specific computational tasks in the behavioral context.  相似文献

Human organism is interpenetrated by the world of microorganisms, from the conception until the death. This interpenetration involves different levels of interactions between the partners including trophic exchanges, bi-directional cell signaling and gene activation, besides genetic and epigenetic phenomena, and tends towards mutual adaptation and coevolution. Since these processes are critical for the survival of individuals and species, they rely on the existence of a complex organization of adaptive systems aiming at two apparently conflicting purposes: the maintenance of the internal coherence of each partner, and a mutually advantageous coexistence and progressive adaptation between them. Humans possess three adaptive systems: the nervous, the endocrine and the immune system, each internally organized into subsystems functionally connected by intraconnections, to maintain the internal coherence of the system. The three adaptive systems aim at the maintenance of the internal coherence of the organism and are functionally linked by interconnections, in such way that what happens to one is immediately sensed by the others. The different communities of infectious agents that live within the organism are also organized into functional networks. The members of each community are linked by intraconnections, represented by the mutual trophic, metabolic and other influences, while the different infectious communities affect each other through interconnections. Furthermore, by means of its adaptive systems, the organism influences and is influenced by the microbial communities through the existence of transconnections. It is proposed that these highly complex and dynamic networks, involving gene exchange and epigenetic phenomena, represent major coevolutionary forces for humans and microorganisms.  相似文献

The year 1991 marked 100 yr of coevolution research. I have reviewed the first 90 yr of this history. Three chronological phases are apparent: recognition of predictable associations among hosts and their parasites; search for patterns of association and their underlying causes, emphasizing either correlated biogeographic patterns or correlated phylogenies; and development of objective and repeatable methodologies for reconstructing and interpreting these patterns of association. Von Ihering, an outspoken anti-Darwinian, was undoubtedly the first to recognize and make use of predictable host-parasite associations. Kellogg and Fahrenholz, however, had more profound influence on subsequent generations, but in different directions. Kellogg attempted to meld natural selection with speciation by isolation. He also considered host specificity a component of coevolution, important but variable. His work laid the foundation for future research concentrated on biogeographic interpretations of host-parasite relationships. This emphasis and Metcalf's failed attempts to provide adequate mechanisms for reconstructing phylogenies reduced the biogeographic approach to an empirical research program in the hands of Manter. Fahrenholz, on the other hand, exposed to a strong anti-Darwinian sentiment, emphasized the importance of strict host specificity. This led to Eichler's formulation of the first 3 coevolutionary rules and the conclusion that host specificity was not a component but the cause of coevolution and ultimately the tautology inherent in the phylogenetic approach. All had to rely on 1 assumption, that host and parasite phylogenies were reflected in the taxonomic hierarchy. Hennig criticized this assumption and provided a method whereby phylogenies are reconstructed independently. Brooks melded this new phylogenetic method (cladistics) with an equally new biogeographic method (vicariance biogeography), providing the foundations for the modern macroevolutionary approach to studying host-parasite associations.  相似文献

Young turkeys exposed to low ambient temperature (Ta) showed significantly reduced body weight, which coincided with a reduction in energy intake and with changes in the circulatory system to accommodate higher oxygen demand. These changes included a significant increase in hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, plasma triiodothyronine (T3) concentration, blood volume, and blood oxygen capacity. At the relatively high Ta, changes to accommodate heat dissipation included significant increases in plasma volume and panting rate. These compensations were sufficient to control body temperature (Tb). However, the higher energy expenditure for maintenance followed by significantly higher plasma triiodothyronine (T3) concentration, but with lower energy intake at low Ta, suggest a physical limitation in the ability to further increase energy intake as Ta declines.  相似文献

Life on Earth has always existed in the flux of ionizing radiation. However, fungi seem to interact with the ionizing radiation differently from other inhabitants of the Earth. Recent data show that melanized fungal species like those from Chernobyl's reactor respond to ionizing radiation with enhanced growth. Fungi colonize space stations and adapt morphologically to extreme conditions. Radiation exposure causes upregulation of many key genes, and an inducible microhomology-mediated recombination pathway could be a potential mechanism of adaptive evolution in eukaryotes. The discovery of melanized organisms in high radiation environments, the space stations, Antarctic mountains, and in the reactor cooling water combined with phenomenon of 'radiotropism' raises the tantalizing possibility that melanins have functions analogous to other energy harvesting pigments such as chlorophylls.  相似文献

One of the main advantages of de novo gene synthesis is the fact that it frees the researcher from any limitations imposed by the use of natural templates. To make the most out of this opportunity, efficient algorithms are needed to calculate a coding sequence, combining different requirements, such as adapted codon usage or avoidance of restriction sites, in the best possible way. We present an algorithm where a “variation window” covering several amino acid positions slides along the coding sequence. Candidate sequences are built comprising the already optimized part of the complete sequence and all possible combinations of synonymous codons representing the amino acids within the window. The candidate sequences are assessed with a quality function, and the first codon of the best candidates’ variation window is fixed. Subsequently the window is shifted by one codon position. As an example of a freely accessible software implementing the algorithm, we present the Mr. Gene web-application. Additionally two experimental applications of the algorithm are shown.  相似文献

Recent developments in evolutionary game theory argue the superiority of punishment over reciprocity as accounts of large-scale human cooperation. I introduce a distinction between a behavioral and a psychological perspective on reciprocity and punishment to question this view. I examine a narrow and a wide version of a psychological mechanism for reciprocity and conclude that a narrow version is clearly distinguishable from punishment, but inadequate for humans; whereas a wide version is applicable to humans but indistinguishable from punishment. The mechanism for reciprocity in humans emerges as a meta-norm that governs both retaliation and punishment. I make predictions open to empirical investigation to confirm or disconfirm this view.

An integrative multidisciplinary approach was used to delimit boundaries among cryptic species within the Anastrepha fraterculus complex in Brazil. Sexual compatibility, courtship and sexual acoustic behaviour, female morphometric variability, variation for the mitochondrial gene COI, and the presence of Wolbachia were compared among A. fraterculus populations from the Southern (Vacaria, Pelotas, Bento Gonçalves, São Joaquim) and Southeastern (Piracicaba) regions of Brazil. Our results suggest full mating compatibility among A. fraterculus populations from the Southern region and partial pre‐zygotic reproductive isolation of these populations when compared with the population from the Southeastern region. A. fraterculus populations from both regions differed in the frequency of courtship displays and aspects of the calling phase and mounting acoustic signal. Morphometric analysis showed differences between Southern region and Southeastern region samples. All populations analyzed were infected with Wolbachia. The trees generated from the COI sequencing data are broadly congruent with the behavioural and morphometric data with the exception of one Southern population. The likely mechanisms by which A. fraterculus populations might have diverged are discussed in detail based on behavioural, morphometric, molecular genetics, and biogeographical studies.  相似文献

Abstract. This study addresses the evolutionary history of the chloroplast genomes of two closely related pine species, Pinus hartwegii Lindl. and P. montezumae Lamb (subsect. Ponderosae) using coalescent theory and some of the statistical tools that have been developed from it during the past two decades. Pinus hartwegii and P. montezumae are closely related species in the P. montezumae complex (subsect. Ponderosae) of Mexico and Central America. Pinus hartwegii is a high elevation species, whereas P. montezumae occurs at lower elevations. The two species occur on many of the same mountains throughout Mexico. A total of 350 individuals of P. hartwegii and P. montezumae were collected from Nevado de Colima (Jalisco), Cerro Potosí (Nuevo León), Iztaccihuatl/Popocatépetl (México), and Nevado de Toluca (México). The chloroplast genome of P. hartwegii and P. montezumae was mapped using eight restriction enzymes. Fifty-one different haplotypes were characterized; 38 of 160 restriction sites were polymorphic. Clades of most parsimoniously related chloroplast haplotypes are geographically localized and do not overlap in distribution, and the geographically localized clades of haplotypes include both P. hartwegii and P. montezumae . Some haplotypes in the clades occur in only one of the two species, whereas other haplotypes occur in both species. These data strongly suggest ancient and/or ongoing hybridization between P. hartwegii and P. montezumae and a shared chloroplast genome history within geographic regions of Mexico.  相似文献

The biological meaning of folliculogenesis is to free fertilisable oocytes at the time of ovulation. We approached the study of the control of follicular development at the level of follicular granulosa cells, on the experimental as well as mathematical modelling grounds. We built a mathematical model allowing for the processes of proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. State variables correspond to the numbers of cells undergoing these different processes, while control variables correspond to the cellular transition rates. The model results raised the notion of proliferative resources, which leads to consider the optimal management of these resources and has motivated the settling of an experiment investigating the changes in the growth fraction within the granulosa throughout terminal development. We are now investigating the way gonadotrophins, and especially FSH, operate on granulosa cells, in order to account for the hormonal control of the divergent commitment of granulosa cells towards either proliferation, differentiation or apoptosis. We are thus focusing on the dynamics of cAMP production, which appears to be a keypoint in FSH signal transduction.  相似文献

The principles of modern aquaculture encourage the development of fish feeds containing low fish meal content and several types of plant ingredients plus nutrients to avoid depleting global fish stocks and to reduce costs. However, food constituents can affect animal nutrition and feeding behavior, so the effect of different diets on fish behavior and growth needs to be understood to optimize the use of nutrients and to improve fish welfare. The development of multiple-choice self-feeding systems led to a new perspective for investigating these issues in aquaculture species. Our purpose with this review is to summarize the information that has been published to date on this topic and to identify gaps in knowledge where research is needed. Key subjects are assessed under the following major headings: How do we study dietary selection in fish? What food signals do fish use to choose the right diet? and How do fish respond to food challenges? The present review will provide a picture of the main results obtained to date in these studies in aquaculture fish species, as well as perspectives for future research in the field.  相似文献

MultiSig is a newly developed mode of analysis of sedimentation equilibrium (SE) experiments in the analytical ultracentrifuge, having the capability of taking advantage of the remarkable precision (~0.1 % of signal) of the principal optical (fringe) system employed, thus supplanting existing methods of analysis through reducing the ‘noise’ level of certain important parameter estimates by up to orders of magnitude. Long-known limitations of the SE method, arising from lack of knowledge of the true fringe number in fringe optics and from the use of unstable numerical algorithms such as numerical differentiation, have been transcended. An approach to data analysis, akin to ‘spatial filtering’, has been developed, and shown by both simulation and practical application to be a powerful aid to the precision with which near-monodisperse systems can be analysed, potentially yielding information on protein-solvent interaction. For oligo- and poly-disperse systems the information returned includes precise average mass distributions over both cell radial and concentration ranges and mass-frequency histograms at fixed radial positions. The application of MultiSig analysis to various complex heterogenous systems and potentially multiply-interacting carbohydrate oligomers is described.  相似文献

Data availability expectations have changed over the years in scientific publishing, nowhere more so than in the field of genomics. This field has spearheaded openness and transparency via public and structured deposition of data. BMC Genomics strongly encourages deposition and unrestricted availability of all primary data underlying research studies both as a way of ensuring reproducibility and standardisation, but also as part of overall community-driven expectation on data deposition and sharing.With funders and publishers moving towards more explicit mandates (regarding data availability), we examined the current barriers to unrestricted availability of data and explored different scenarios in which commercial agreements might run contrary to scientific convention and data sharing policies. In this editorial, Ross Tellam (CSIRO, Australia), Paul Rushton (Texas A&M AgriLife Research) and Peter Schuerman (University of California, Merced), give their views on the importance of data sharing and examine the current challenges in research fields like crop and livestock genomics, where often it is necessary to integrate the interests of academic and commercial stakeholders. We discuss the current approaches, highlight the importance of community-driven standards, and propose ways forward.  相似文献

Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) is a common birth defect involving first and second branchial arch derivatives. The phenotype is extremely variable. In addition to craniofacial anomalies there may be cardiac, vertebral and central nervous system defects. The majority of cases are sporadic, but there is substantial evidence for genetic involvement in this condition, including rare familial cases that exhibit autosomal dominant inheritance. As an approach towards identifying molecular pathways involved in ear and facial development, we have ascertained both familial and sporadic cases of HFM. A genome wide search for linkage in two families with features of HFM was performed to identify the disease loci. In one family data were highly suggestive of linkage to a region of approximately 10.7 cM on chromosome 14q32, with a maximum multipoint lod score of 3.00 between microsatellite markers D14S987 and D14S65. This locus harbours the Goosecoid gene, an excellent candidate for HFM based on mouse expression and phenotype data. Coding region mutations were sought in the familial cases and in 120 sporadic cases, and gross rearrangements of the gene were excluded by Southern blotting. Evidence for genetic heterogeneity is provided by the second family, in which linkage was excluded from this region.  相似文献
