Numbers of moulting diving ducks at Myvatn, north Iceland, were monitored over a period of 25 years; aquatic insects (Chironomidae and Simuliidae), a major food resource, were monitored with window traps for 23 years. The response of the duck populations to changes in the food situation during the moulting period varied between species. Histrionicus histrionicus and Melanitta nigra invariably go to the sea to moult. Three species (Aythya fuligula, Clangula hyemalis and Mergus serrator) have shown long term variation in moult migration habits. Aythya marila and Bucephala islandica stay for moulting, their numbers supplemented by birds from elsewhere. A. marila is a generalist feeder and therefore at low risk of starving, the strategy of Bucephala islandica is to move within the water system where the food situation tends to alternate between the lake and the river. Numbers of Bucephala islandica males moulting on Lake Myvatn were strongly and positively correlated with chironomid numbers and those moulting on the river Laxá with Simulium vittatum, the main food resource there. We did not find convincing evidence that numbers of moulting A. marila and C. hyemalis responded to variation in the food supply during the study period. This applied also to A. fuligula in the South Basin of Myvatn, but numbers in the North Basin were positively associated with chironomid numbers. M. serrator moulting on Myvatn showed negative correlations with the chironomids, perhaps reflecting a negative association between chironomids and its main food, Gasterosteus aculeatus. Apart from safety considerations for a flightless bird, the choice of a moulting site is apparently influenced by the local food conditions on one hand and by the opportunities and risks involved in migrating to distant moulting sites with an unknown food situation on the other hand.  相似文献

A population of booted eagles (Hieraaetus pennatus) consisting of 21–29 pairs was studied for 7 years (1998–2004) in a forested mountainous region of southeastern Spain. The average egg-laying time was 25 April (earliest 31 March, latest 26 May). Sixty-eight percent of territorial pairs produced eggs, and 81% of reproductive pairs successfully raised at least one offspring. Mean clutch size was 1.91 eggs, and 84% hatched. The survival rate of chicks was high, with only 17% dying. The major known cause of nestling mortality was predation, mainly by the Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo). The mean number of flying offspring was 0.91 per territorial pair, 1.29 per reproductive pair and 1.65 per successful pair. All population breeding parameters analysed were density independent, but most showed a significantly negative relationship with mean laying date.  相似文献

Summary Keratella cochlearis exhibited consistent seasonal abundance patterns during a four-year study in Little Rock Lake, Wisconsin, U.S.A. In each year, spring population peaks were followed by strong summer reductions. Concomitant with population declines, there were reductions in rotifer egg ratios. Keratella taurocephala abundance patterns were similar to those of K. cochlearis during 1984 and 1985, but not in 1986 and 1987, when spring peaks and summer declines were not apparent. However, summer declines in the egg ratio of K. taurocephala were observed during each year. The reduction in rotifer populations simultaneously with decreased egg ratios suggested that population declines were caused by food limitation. Food-addition experiments conducted in situ in small enclosures indicated that food was limiting for K. cochlearis when its populations were declining, but not during other periods of the year. Keratella taurocephala did not show a consistent response to food addition.  相似文献

The possibility that resource limits constrain the growth of mobile epifaunal populations associated withSargassum patens plants was investigated by placing plants and associated animals into field microcosms which excluded fish predators, and then comparing faunal abundance and size-structure changes in different microcosm treatments with field populations. Four different micrososm treatments were set up: two treatments containing defaunated plants inoculated with caprellid amphipods, and two control treatments with natural faunas. The estimated secondary production of faunas enclosed in all microcosm treatments rapidly settled on a constant value (5 mg/day) which was similar to that determined in experiments conducted in Western Australia using the same microcosms but for faunas associated with a seagrass rather than a macroalga. These results support the hypothesis that the secondary production of epifaunal communities associated with macrophytes is constrained by quantifiable food resource ceilings. Predation by the most common fish species in the area, the wrasseHalichoeres tenuispinis, did not appear to alter macrofaunal production in theS. patens bed; however, it did greatly affect the faunal size-structure by eliminating most of the larger animals. The majority of epifaunal animals 2.0 mm sieve-size were consumed byH. tenuispinis, while negligible numbers of 0.5-mm sieve-size animals were captured. We postulate that food resource ceilings and predatory size-selectivity are widespread phenomena, affecting epifaunal populations at a variety of locations. Predation is predicted to generally increase rather than decrease faunal abundance because the consumption of each large invertebrate by a predator frees sufficient resources to feed several smaller individuals.  相似文献

The production of lipids and hydrocarbons in batch cultures of the algaeBotryococcus braunii andB. protuberans has been studied with respect to nitrogen limitation under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Nitrogen deficiency significantly decreased the dry weight, chlorophylla and protein contents but the amounts of carotenoids, carbohydrates and lipids increased in both the species. Nitrogen starvation gave a 1.6-fold increase in lipid content. Anaerobiosis under nitrogen deficient conditions gave greater lipid production than anaerobiosis in nitrogen supplemented medium. Under nitrogen deficiency, the hydrocarbon fraction increased and the polar lipids decreased. Anaerobiosis induced hydrocarbon synthesis more significantly than nitrogen deficiency but decreased other non-polar and polar lipids.  相似文献

Annual egg and chick production and breeding success at the Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) colony Edmonson Point (74°21′S–165°10′E), Victoria Land, is presented for eight breeding seasons between 1995 and 2005. During this period the colony consisted of 10–13 subcolonies and averaged 2098 ± 278 breeding pairs. A sample of over 100 nests (114–150), belonging to two subcolonies, was monitored each year. Some breeding parameters remained constant while others showed substantial annual variation. Laying date showed little variation, and laying was highly synchronous: 82.5% of clutches were initiated in a 10-day period, 9–18 November. In contrast, clutch size (1.77–1.97) and incubation period (34.4 ± 2.5) varied significantly. Variation among years was also recorded in hatching success (from 58 to 86%) and breeding success. This last parameter, measured as number of chicks reared to crèche per nest with eggs, varied between 0.34 and 0.97.  相似文献

Plant reproductive output can be limited by a variety of factors, bothintrinsic and extrinsic. I investigated the reproductive biologies of twospecies of unbranched short-columnar cacti, Ferocactuscylindraceus and F. wislizeni. I recordedfemalereproductive output (flowers produced, fruit set, seeds per fruit and seedmass), plant size and growth, and used hand-pollination experiments todeterminebreeding systems and pollen limitation. In both species, the ability to selfvaried among individuals, but self-pollination resulted in very few seeds,suggesting strong inbreeding depression. Neither species was pollen-limited.Numbers of flowers produced increases with plant size for both species, andseeds per fruit may also be related to plant size, although the relationship isunclear. Seed mass is not correlated with plant size. Flower production wassimilar in both species, but F. cylindraceus producedfewerseeds per fruit than F. wislizeni, and its seeds weighedless. Fruit set by F. cylindraceus was heavily impacted bya florivorous lepidopteran. Fruit set was very high (94 to 96%) inF. wislizeni, suggesting that architectural constraints(e.g., meristem limitation) are more limiting than resource levels or the levelof pollinator services. In F. cylindraceus, numbers ofseeds per fruit was positively correlated with seed mass, whereas inF. wislizeni, the relationship was negative (tradeoff).Thegrowth rates of F. wislizeni are affected by rainfall theprevious season, and growth rates increase as the plant ages.Ferocactus cylindraceus and F.wislizeni are thought to be sister species, meaning that observeddifferences between them are more likely to be the result of recentevolutionaryprocesses in their lineages rather than differing phylogenetic histories.  相似文献

Summary Although it is commonly presumed that many populations of large-herbivores are limited by food availability, supporting evidence is scarce. This hypothesis was investigated in a population of over 800,000 white-eared kob in the Boma National Park region of the southern Sudan. Food availability, body condition, and mortality rates of adults and calves were measured during the dry seasons of 1982 and 1983. Sampled age distributions from both the live population and carcasses were used to calculate age-specific rates of mortality. In 1982, food supplies during the dry season were augmented by substantial rainfall, which produced regrowth of grass in areas that ordinarily had little green forage. As a result, fat reserves declined little, and rates of adult mortality showed no increasing trend. Total adult mortality was 5%. In 1983, there was no rainfall during the dry season and food intake was insufficient to meet the estimated energy requirements of kob. As a result, fat reserves declined and adult mortality rates increased fourfold. Total adult mortality was 10% (equivalent to the recruitment rate of yearling into the population). Calf mortality during the dry season was similar in both years (50%), based on field estimates of mortality rates and calf/female ratios. Lactation throughout the dry season possibly provided a buffer for calves against variations in food availability. The age structure of the live population in 1983 suggests that a drought in 1980 reduced kob numbers by 40%. These results suggest that adult survival is influenced strongly by the availability of food during the dry season. However, the duration of the dry season also plays an important role. During the dry season, declining fat reserves make an increasing proportion of the population vulnerable to mortality. As a result, even moderate droughts may lead to substantial changes in population numbers.  相似文献

During the breeding season, migratory waterfowl are attracted to wetlands characterized by high macroinvertebrate availability. Many of these prairie potholes are fishless and this apparent void is filled, at least partially, by tiger salamanders. Based on gut contents from 98 tiger salamanders and published diet data from over 1500 ducks, we show that there is general overlap in diet between both larval and adult tiger salamanders and 10 duck species. Furthermore, when the ducks were split into foraging guilds and compared with tiger salamanders, prey type overlap was 1.7 times higher and prey size was 1.8 times higher with dabbling ducks than diving ducks. Field surveys show that tiger salamander density is more highly correlated with diving duck density across potholes than dabbling duck density. Tiger salamanders have higher diet overlap with dabbling ducks than diving ducks whereas tiger salamanders have higher spatial overlap with diving ducks than dabbling ducks suggesting that these consumers coarsely partition diet and habitat resources. It has been reported that tiger salamanders have specialized diets that are associated with foraging preferences for benthic habitats. This view is too narrow: in southwestern Manitoba, Canada, tiger salamanders are more general consumers with diets more like dabbling ducks that forage mostly in planktonic and littoral habitats. Our results suggest that dabbling and diving ducks are, to different extents, liable to the effects of indirect interactions, specifically competition for common prey, with tiger salamanders.  相似文献

Periods of poor nutrition during early development may have negative fitness consequences in subsequent periods of ontogeny. In insects, suppression of growth and developmental rate during the larval stage are likely to affect size and timing of maturity, which in turn may lead to reduced reproductive success or survivorship. In light of these costs, individuals may achieve compensatory growth via behavioural or physiological mechanisms following food limitation. In this study, we examined the effects of a temporary period of food restriction on subsequent growth and age and size at maturity in the larval damselfly Ischnura verticalis (Odonata: Coenagrionidae). We also asked whether this temporary period of reduced nutrition affected subsequent foraging behaviour under predation risk. I. verticalis larvae exposed to a temporary food shortage suffered from a reduced growth rate during this period relative to a control group that was fed ad libitum. However, increased growth rates later in development ensured that adult body size measurements (head and pronotum widths) did not differ between the treatments upon emergence. In contrast, adult dry mass did not catch up to that of the controls, indicating that the increased growth rates for size dimensions occur at the cost of similar gains in mass. Predators reduced foraging effort of larvae, but this reduction did not differ between control larvae and those previously exposed to poor nutrition.  相似文献

Direct ammonium fumarate production from glucose-based media with Rhizopus arrhizus NRRL 1526 was obtained using 2-kmol (NH4)2CO3 per-m3 as neutralising agent and controlling mycelial growth by phosphorous (P) limitation. As the P level in the production medium was increased from 0 to 0.3-kg of KH2PO4 per m3, the fumarate yield decreased from 0.32 to 0.13-g per-g of glucose consumed; maximum ammonium fumarate productivity (0.46-kg-m–3-h–1) was obtained when using 0.1-kg phosphate-m–3.  相似文献

Summary The intensity of resource exploitation by phytophagous insects is usually considered to reflect population size. For populations of two flowerhead-attacking tephritid flies, however, the resources utilised were not related to the numbers of searching adults. Tephritis bardanae Schrank attacked 11–13% of the total flowerheads each year, and Cerajocera tussilaginis (Fab) 17–65%, despite much wider and uncorrelated variation in adult numbers. Analysis of field data showed that the proportion of flowerheads used was not limited by poor flowerhead quality, but was restricted by (1) the synchronisation of adult activity with the appearance of flowerheads at the correct age for oviposition, and (2) by factors which influenced the ability of female flies to locate available heads. These restrictions were more severe in T. bardanae and explained its relatively low rate of infestation. Both tephritids tended to avoid flowerheads in open areas. The processes governing resource exploitation in each tephritid operated independently of the other, and a partial separation of the two species between flowerhead types and habitats arose simply because of their different timing of attack.  相似文献

Breeding chronology, harem structure and changes in male harem dominance were studied at Stranger Point, Isla 25 de Mayo/King George Island, principally by extensive field census work during the 2003 breeding season. Males were individually identified and their size estimated by using a photogrammetric method. Peak female haul out for the population occurred on 31 October, when a total of 276 females were observed along 7 km of coastline, distributed in ten harems with a median size of 16 females. Overall sex ratio and harem sex ratio for the breeding population were 1:6.7 and 1:10.6, respectively. A total of 33 males were identified associated with harems. Male size conferred an advantage in terms of dominance hierarchy, since dominant males (4.91±0.15 m) were significantly longer than subordinate males (4.63±0.19 m). Harems were dominated by an average of 4.5 (range 2–7) different males during the breeding season. Elephant seals at Stranger Point breed in very low density aggregations. The main breeding events in this population occurred later than at other breeding sites, which agrees with previous observations in the area. Male movement among harems suggests that differences in mating success among males could be achieved through their different behaviours.  相似文献

Benthic Cladocera were studied with a modified type of an activity trap in Lake Myvatn in 1990–1992. After feasibility experiments, the operation time and the distance of the traps from the benthic substrate were adjusted in order to minimize the effects of diurnal variation and the trapping of planktonic organisms. The trap catches of Eurycercus lamellatus were positively correlated with their abundance at the bottom as estimated by grab sampling (r = 0.910, P < 0.001). The usefulness of the activity trap was demonstrated by: (1) a lake-wide survey of the benthic Cladocera; (2) a study of the seasonal variation in the size distribution, abundance and sex ratio of E. lamellatus; and (3) a study of the seasonal succession of Chydorus sphaericus and Alona affinis. The variation of benthic Cladocera among 21 trap sites distributed on a 1–2-km scale across the lake exceeded the within-site variation. The sampling sites could be divided into five main groups based on cluster analysis. Eurycercus lamellatus was the most common species in the mat of filamentous green algae (Cladophorales). Alonella nana dominated the area of spring water inflow in the north basin and Macrothrix hirsuticornis the area of spring water inflow in the southeastern part of the lake. In other parts of the lake either Chydorus sphaericus or Alona quadrangularis tended to dominate. The size distribution and sex ratio of E. lamellatus was followed at two sites through one summer. In early summer most individuals were females less than 1.45 mm long. Around mid-summer they had grown to 0.69–3.1 mm. By the end of August the size distribution had become bimodal, with a large number of small males and a smaller number of much larger females. The seasonal succession in the abundance of E. lamellatus, A. affinis and C. sphaericus was followed at four sites over two seasons. With some exceptions the abundance of a species followed a similar seasonal trajectory on the different stations in any one year. The influence of phosphorus limitedAsterionella on the zoospore production of its fungal parasiteRhizophydium planktonicum was measured, using laboratory cultures of host and parasite. At saturated phosphorus concentrations the host reached a specific growth rate of 0.95.d–1. Growing on these host cells, the mean parasite zoospore production was 26 spores per sporangium, and the mean development time of a sporangium was 45 hours. Growing on phosphorus limited hosts, the zoospore production decreased to less then 9 spores per sporangium, and the development time decreased to 40 hours. On phosphorus limited hosts, zoospores were produced at a slower rate. The algal growth rate was reduced to a greater extent than the fungal growth rate. Therefore, it could be concluded that phosphorus limitation ofAsterionella will facilitate the development of an epidemic of its parasiteRhizophidium, at least at high diatom densities, when possible differences in infectability of the algae play a minor role.  相似文献

In migratory birds individuals may prospect for potential breeding sites months before they attempt to breed and should use the cues most predictive of future reproductive success when selecting a breeding site. However, what cues individuals use when prospecting and which cues are used in selecting a breeding site are unknown for most species. I investigated whether yellow-headed blackbirds (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus) prospect for future breeding sites and whether they select breeding habitats based on food availability, male or female density, or the average number of young produced per female in the previous year. Although it is often assumed that migratory birds prospect for potential breeding sites at the end of the breeding season, I investigated this by recording all visits to sites early and late in the breeding season. I found that males and females who visited sites other than the site at which they bred were more likely to disperse than individuals only observed at the site where they bred, and that males and females were more likely to prospect late in the breeding season. Both food availability and density in year x were not predictive of the number of young per female in year x+1; however, the number of young produced per female at a site in year x was predictive of the number of young per female in year x+1. As expected, dispersers used the most informative cue, the number of young per female and moved to sites with a relatively high number of young per female. This study suggests that individuals prospect for potential breeding sites late in the breeding season when they can use information gathered from the reproductive success of other individuals (i.e., public information) to select a breeding site.  相似文献

Comparative analyses of interspecific differences in response to climate change can provide important insights into the factors initiating seasonal onset of reproduction in various species and subsequent fitness consequences. We present a comparative analysis based on a 30-year breeding survey of two related migratory songbird species [Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus (RW) and Great Reed Warbler A. arundinaceus (GRW)], which coexist in reedbeds by means of various interspecific interactions. The RW advanced breeding by 15 days and shortened its breeding time window, which is a combined effect of higher temperatures, alleviated competition as a consequence of population declines in the dominant GRW, and reduced RW population. Although the breeding period of GRW changed only slightly, its clutch initiation was likewise related to temperature. Most probably, advanced breeding in RW is favoured by changes in food supply and accelerated reed growth, which provides the necessary nest concealment earlier, whereas this does not affect the GRW, a species less vulnerable to nest predation. Clutch size decreased later in the season, so that earlier breeding produced a net increase in both species. An additional increase of clutch size in GRW can be explained by the use of higher-quality territories in today’s smaller population. The main causes of nest losses were predation in RW and adverse weather in GRW, but reproductive success increased over the study period in both species, which was a consequence of larger clutches in RW, but of favourable weather during rearing and fewer total losses in GRW. Our results document that different causal mechanisms are involved in the reproductive changes of the two congeneric species living in the same habitat: RW breeding earlier by making use of competitive release and other ecological improvements, and GRW by benefiting from better rearing conditions. As species respond differentially to climate change depending on ecosystem and biotic interactions, predictions of population dynamics will remain vague until the specific response mechanisms have been elucidated.  相似文献

Spiramycin production by Streptomyces ambofaciens Sp181110 with glucose as the carbon source was studied under a controlled nutritional environment. In a batch culture, the glucose excess after ammonium depletion led to pyruvate and α-ketoglutarate accumulation. 85 mg/l of spiramycin were produced in less than 70 h during the stationary and maintenance phase on these acids after glucose exhaustion. Fed-batch strategy was designed to study spiramycin production without by-product formation and glucose accumulation. In these conditions, up to 150 mg/l were produced in less than 80 h during the stationary phase on glucose. The antibiotic titre was found independent of the glucose feeding under carbon limitation and the importance of putative intracellular reserves formed after nutrient exhaustion was suggested. Besides, spiramycin production was not inhibited by the limiting flux of glucose.  相似文献

Summary The effects of food on breeding success and behavior of the red-winged blackbird (Icteridae: Agelaius phoeniceus) were investigated during 3 successive breeding seasons. In the second season, a 4-week pulse of abundant food in the form of a periodical cicada emergence (Homoptera: Cicadidae: Magicicada spp.) occurred in the forest adjacent to the marsh where the birds were breeding.During the cicada period, the bird population showed: 1) an increase in foraging trips to the forest and a decrease in trips per h, 2) increased biomass of nestlings, 3) increased nestling survival caused by decreased starvation, 4) increased fledging success, and 5) bimodal weight distributions of older nestlings (reflective of the sexual dimorphism in this species). These data suggest the temporary removal of food limitations on the breeding population when the pulse of food was available.  相似文献

Summary One possible consequence of low population density, particularly in self-incompatible plants, is reproductive failure. I surveyed seed set per flower in two populations of the self-incompatible annual Diplotaxis erucoides (Brassicaceae) in Jerusalem, Israel. Widely spaced plants had lower fruit set and fewer seeds per filled silique than did plants growing close to conspecific neighbors. Such density-dependent reproductive success could help explain the maintanence of spatial patchiness in plant populations, and could also have implications for population dynamics of rare species.  相似文献
