Summary Two lines of Tribolium castaneum were selected in each of three replicates for egg laying between 7 and 11 days after adult emergency and for adult weight at 12 days, using theoretical (IT) and empirical (IP) index selection methods. Index coefficients were given empirically in the IP line and they were adjusted in the successive generations of selection according to the results obtained in the previous ones. Highly repeatable selection responses in all replicates occurred in both lines for the aggregate genotype (egg laying plus adult weight) and for each individual trait. The IP line tended to increase slightly more than the IT line for aggregate genotype and egg laying, while the highest response in adult weight was obtained with the IT method. The two methods gave consistently different responses in each replicate. The expected results were that IT selection should not exceed IP selection for the aggregate genotype and egg laying while theoretically the IT method should have been superior for increase adult weight. Theoretical expectations for adult weight have been fulfilled in practice. The IP method would be preferred in a practical sense because of its simplicity and freedom from need of parameter estimation.  相似文献

Summary Five lines of Tribolium castaneum (flour beetle) were selected in each of three, replicates for biomass, using quadratic (Q) and linear (L) selection indices, direct selection for biomass (B) and indirect selection for each component trait, i.e. pupal weight (P) and family size (F), respectively, for five generations. The highest response in biomass was obtained in the Q line using an exact quadratic index in which the genetic value for each trait was based on information from both traits. The expected results were that Q selection would not exceed L selection while the L method would be superior with respect to direct selection for biomass (B line); P selection would be better and F selection worse than B selection. Selection was effective for pupal weight in the Q, L, B and P lines, but was not effective for family size, although the Q line increased slightly. The lines had no linear response for family size. Selection for biomass was influenced more by family size than by pupal weight. It is advantageous to include terms such as squares and products in the selection index, even though the response to selection may have been non-linear because of the low heritability of family size and an intermediate optimum for this component trait.  相似文献

Summary The role of mutations in finite populations on response to artificial selection was investigated by a computer simulation model designed to mimic the biological model of pupal weight of Tribolium. Given the model, the results showed that with selection about 25–55 generations were needed for genetic variances to reach a maximum value depending on population size, selection intensity, and gene number. When effective population size was larger than 40 or the intensity of selection was high (less than 50% selected), selection had a dramatic effect in reducing the time to approach the maximum point of genetic variance. Furthermore, the genetic variance after that point often declined as a function of selection instead of remaining at a steady state in the subsequent generations.  相似文献

Summary The genetic parameters of two quantitative traits, 13-day larval weight and pupal weight, in Tribolium populations developed by reciprocal recurrent selection (RRS) and by within-line purebred selection (WLS) were compared each with the other and also with the parameters of the unselected base populations using the genetic model of Carbonell, Nyquist and Bell. The variability for two and three-way crosses of inbred lines derived from companion populations (two strains, breeds, or varieties used for a terminal cross or hybrid) was analyzed into genetic effects: autosomal additivity (* g), autosomal heterosis (* s), sex-linked additivity (L), sex-linked heterosis (LL), general maternal (m), specific maternal or reciprocal (r), additive by additive epistasis (aa), and deviations from the model due, among other causes, to higher order epistasis (dev). One series of crosses involved companion populations with diverse origins. For contrast, a second series of crosses involved companion populations originating from a common heterogenous base population. For the heterotic trait larval weight, * g and * s effects were equally important and accounted for over 50% of the total variation. The aa epistasis contributed another 20% and was followed in importance by higher order epistasis and general maternal effects. For the more highly heritable trait, pupal weight, * g effects were most important with * s, aa, and m effects having smaller but significant influences. Sex-linked and reciprocal effects were statistically significant for many crosses, but they were relatively unimportant overall. In general, the unselected base populations showed higher * g variation than either RRS or WLS populations with the reverse true for * s effects. In agreement with theoretical expectations, RRS was more effective than WLS in exploiting * s effects. The aa epistatic effects for larval weight were of major importance in the unselected populations, but RRS and WLS did not differ significantly for exploiting superior aa gene combinations. Summary The effect of simulated opposing natural selection on the response to mass selection for 18-day pupa weight of Tribolium castaneum was studied for 10 generations of selection. Natural selection was simulated in replicated treatment lines by imposing a negative relationship between mid-parent genetic value for pupa weight and fertility. Responses to selection and realized heritabilities were smaller (P < 0.05 and P < 0.10, respectively) for the treatment lines than for control lines under selection for pupa weight only. One treatment, line E3G1, reached an intermediate selection plateau by generation 10, and responded linearly to 4 generations of artificial selection after natural selection had been discontinued. Possible explanations for the different behaviors of the replicate lines E3G1 and E3G2 were also discussed.  相似文献

Summary The usefulness of a non-random group selection method in the improvement of a character influenced by interactions among individuals has been experimentally tested in a population of Tribolium castaneum. The selected trait —number of adults produced in a fixed period of time —showed a clear increase after 11 generations of selection. This increase is related to a reduction in developmental time, and it was specific for the population structure in which selection was applied, vanishing when this structure was altered.  相似文献

Samples of microphytobenthos from the Tagus estuary were analysed for photosynthetic pigments by spectrophotometry and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Chlorophyll a values obtained with HPLC and spectrophotometry methods presented a highly significant positive correlation for both spectrophotometric methods used (with and without the correction for pheopigments), but this relationship depended on the type of sediment. We concluded that spectrophotometric methods give reliable Chl-a values, being suited for routine analysis, when a vast number of replicates is needed. However, for the correct estimation of pheopigments, HPLC analysis is indispensable. In the literature, Chl-a estimations are expressed per content (μg g−1) or concentration (mg m−2). We discuss the influence of sediment type on the results depending on the type of unit used, and propose a simple conversion factor based on sediment water content.  相似文献

Summary Triple-testcross experiments were used to analyze epistatic contributions to % hatchability of eggs, age of pupation, number of eggs laid in 24-hour period, and survival from hatching to day 35. Seven diverse inbred lines and the F1 produced by crossing the two tester lines were examined for the presence of epistasis. There was evidence of epistasis for each of the 4 traits in at least one of the 8 lines tested. Epistasis was a major source of variation in survival in all of the lines tested.  相似文献

Summary Triple-testcross experiments were used to analyze epistatic contributions to larva weight, pupa weight, pupa width and adult weight in Tribolium castaneum. Seven diverse inbred lines and the F1. produced by crossing the two tester lines were examined for indications of epistasis. Larva weight was the only trait for which no significant epistasis was detected. There was significant epistasis for pupa weight in three of the inbred lines; for pupa width in four of the inbred lines; for adult weight in five of the inbred lines. Only one inbred line and the F1 line failed to exhibit significant epistasis for any trait. Summary The relative efficiences of the biparental mating systems and selfing series in connection with phenotypic and geno-phenotypic selection procedures were evaluated for yield improvement in a cross HP1102 X CPAN 1681 of wheat. Two selection cycles having a 4 per cent selection intensity for grain yield were carried out following both selection procedures under the two mating systems. Following these selection procedures, a greater improvement for grain yield could be achieved with the biparental mating system than with the selfing series. During the first selection cycle, the geno-phenotypic selection procedure had an edge over phenotypic selection procedure. The realized response due to the second cycle of selection and the predicted response for the third selection cycle indicated that the phenotypic selection procedure is more efficient than the geno-phenotypic selection procedure. It is suggested that selection following intermating in early segregating generations is able to overcome several inherent limitations of the simple pedigree method as it is possible to increase genetic variation and to concentrate favourable genes and gene combinations for grain yield. An increase in grain yield was, in general, accompanied by an increase in plant height, peduncle length, 100 grain weight, tiller number and biological yield. Therefore, it is suggested that an index comprised of grain yield, plant height, tiller number, grain weight and biological yield could be used for selecting high yielding genotypes of suitable height.  相似文献

Summary Three generations of upward selection for the egg mass/adult weight ratio were carried out in Tribolium castaneum. The experiment involved five lines: E — selected for increased egg mass; W — selected for decreased adult weight; R — selected for egg mass/adult weight directly; L — linear index selected with economic weights of m 2: -m 1 egg mass to adult weight (m 1 and m 2 are the means for adult weight and egg mass, respectively); NL — nonlinear index selected. Adult weight (7 days after adult emergence) and egg mass (between 7 and 11 days) were measured. The NL, E, and L lines had the greatest observed responses for the ratio; the R and W lines were not effective in improving the egg mass/adult weight ratio. It was expected that the NL line would be superior to the E, L, and R lines, and that the W line would respond the least. Observed response was significant for egg mass in the NL line, and for adult weight in the E, W, and R lines. Strong selection to increase egg mass seems to represent the optimal criterion for the ratio to be improved. The usefulness of nonlinear indices as selection criteria to improve a nonlinear trait, previously found to be optimal for a trait defined as the product of two component traits, appears to hold also for the selective improvement of the ratio of two traits. Serious limitations expected for direct selection of the ratio have been confirmed in this experiment.  相似文献

Summary A major objective of the CIMMYT Maize Program is to develop open-pollinated varieties of maize (Zea mays L.) that are well adapted to a wide range of environments. To achieve this breeding goal, it is essential that the program use a stability technique that will identify high-yielding, stable genotypes accurately in international trials conducted under different environmental conditions. The objective of this study was to compare a spatial method with a modified conventional regression analysis method to determine the yield stability of 27 CIMMYT maize varieties evaluated at 37 locations. The methods also were compared on the basis of their consistency in assessing the stability of varieties when certain locations were omitted, and when subsets of varieties were analyzed. The varieties found to be stable by the spatial method with all sites included in the analysis were also stable (1) when the lowest and highest yielding sites were excluded from the analyses, and (2) when the varieties were considered, along with others, as a subset of the original group of materials. Stability parameters determined by regression analysis, however, varied for some varieties when (1) extreme sites were excluded, and (2) a subset of entries was considered in isolation. Because the spatial method was more consistent in identifying high-yielding stable varieties, it was considered the more useful of the two methods.  相似文献

Synopsis Predator-prey data were obtained in a study of feeding ecology of land-locked alewife,Alosa pseudoharengus, in Claytor Lake, Virginia, and subjected to two indices of electivity as well as a nonparametric paired-comparisons statistical test. Values obtained from the two indices were often contradictory with each other and the statistical test. Attributes of the statistical procedure render it more appropriate than electivity indices to describe feeding selectivity in fish populations. Results of the study also demonstrated the importance of considering the size composition of zooplankton populations in prey preference studies; measures of selection were often positive for zooplankters 1.0 mm while negative for those of the same prey group < 1.0 mm length. Because numerous problems are inherent with in situ feeding selectivity studies of planktivorous fishes, selectivity determinations, regardless of methodology, should be construed in a relative rather than absolute context.  相似文献

Summary Replicated divergent selection based upon the time taken to recover from the larval alarm reaction in the mosquito Aedes aegypti resulted in lines which recovered faster and slower than the control lines. Estimates of the realized heritability were consistent, ranging from 0.21 to 0.24 in the fast replicates and 0.19 to 0.20 in the slow replicates. After 11 generations of selection an apparent change in the fitness was examined using an application of the path analysis. The relevance of the findings to natural selection is also discussed.  相似文献

Summary The mortality of young tillers to an extent of 36.5% under optimum cultural conditions was recorded in a field experiment. Attention is drawn to the necessity of minimising this loss and to diverting it towards productive tillers by applying selection pressure. Future yield advances may be achieved by selecting genotypes which tiller moderately in the vegetative phase, most of which survive to produce grains. The character association of each variety under consideration was studied for the suitability towards this objective. A modified selection procedure is suggested which may be advantageously applied to achieve this objective. The proposed new methodology may also be effectively applied to such other cereal crops as barley, triticale and oats.  相似文献

Metabolic activities of different microorganisms (Bacillus subtilis, B. licheniformis and Aspergillus niger) and hydrolytic enzymes (concentrations: 1 to 200 mg enzyme solids g–1 feed) were studied individually and in combinations with respect to H2 and methane production from damaged wheat grains. Bacillus subtilis, B. licheniformis and pre-existing hydrogen producers (control) produced 45 to 64 l H2 kg–1 total solids and subsequently, with the help of added methanogens, 155 to 220 l methane kg–1 total solids could be produced. H2 production from damaged wheat grains could be decreased to 28% or enhanced up to 152% with respect to control, by employing various microbial and enzymatic treatments. Similarly, it has been made possible to vary methane production capacities from as low as 17% to as high as 110% with respect to control.  相似文献

Summary The F2 potential of single and three-way crosses was evaluated using a set of physiological and yield components. Results were based on an index of selection using (a) only yield components and (b) both physiological and yield components. The indices were constructed using the percentage improvement of F2 over the better parent of the corresponding F1 cross for every character. The performance of F2 plants assessed by the expected value of the regression index was ranked in descending order to provide a ranked F2 distribution (FRD). The FRD was divided into four equal parts, T25 (top 25%), T50 (26–50%), T75 (51–75%) and T100 (76–100%). F3 families derived from F2 plants in T25 were found to provide a higher frequency of selections for pod number than T50, T75 and T100. The frequency of selections was higher in three-way than single crosses. Selection index based on physiological and yield components was more efficient in trapping F2 plants providing selections in F3 than the index based on yield components only. The results brought out the importance of bunch x bunch crosses as a complement to the usually advocated bunch x runner ones.  相似文献

Biofuel production from renewable resources can potentially address lots of social, economic and environmental issues but an efficient production method has yet to be established. Combinations of different starting materials, organisms and target fuels have been explored with the conversion of cellulose to higher alcohols (1-propanol, 1-butanol) being one potential target. In this study we demonstrate the direct conversion of untreated plant biomass to 1-propanol in aerobic growth conditions using an engineered strain of the actinobacterium, Thermobifida fusca. Based upon computational predictions, a bifunctional butyraldehyde/alcohol dehydrogenase was added to T. fusca leading to 1-propanol production during growth on glucose, cellobiose, cellulose, switchgrass and corn stover. The highest 1-propanol titer (0.48 g/L) was achieved for growth on switchgrass. These results represent the first demonstration of direct conversion of untreated lignocellulosic biomass to 1-propanol in an aerobic organism and illustrate the potential utility of T. fusca as an aerobic, cellulolytic bioprocess organism.  相似文献

Summary Directional and stabilizing selection for developmental time (DT) were done for seven generations in replicated lines of Tribolium castaneum. There were no significant differences between sexes or among replicates in means or coefficients of variation. For directional selection, there were significant responses in both directions, measured as deviation from control, viz. -0.35±0.15 day per generation for Fast (F) and 0.73±0.15 day for Slow (S). The unselected control (C) and the stabilizing selection (I) lines were similar, with average response per generation not significantly different from zero. — Phenotypic variation, from the first generation, was larger in the S line than in the other three lines. The I line showed a significant decrease in phenotypic variation, due mainly to a decrease in genetic variance. The realized heritability was 0.219±0.045 for F and 0.324±0.036 for S, the difference being highly significant. — Correlated response in reproductive fitness (number of pupae produced) was significant only for S (rp=-0.88 and rG realized=-0.79). Regression of the correlated response on DT in this line was-19.28±4.77 pupae per day (phenotypic) and -28.77±10.06 pupae per day (genetic).  相似文献

The dynamics of allele frequencies changing under migration and heterogeneous selection in a subdivided population are investigated. Using perturbation techniques, a stationary state is obtained when migration and selection are both small. Heterogeneous selection leads to a positive correlation between values of F-statistics and heterozygosities when these are compared among sets of subdivided populations. This contrasts with a negative value of the correlation obtained under Wright's classical model of homogeneous selection, and with the absence of correlation in the completely neutral situation.Research supported in part by NIH grants GM 28016 and GM 10452 and a grant from the John D. and Catherine T.
