Species delimitation is a permanent issue in systematics. The increasing recognition of geographically isolated populations as independent lineages allowed by new methods of analysis has inflated the species-populations dilemma, which involves deciding whether to consider separate lineages as different species or structured genetic populations. This is commonly observed between fishes of adjacent river basins, with some lineages being considered allopatric sister species and others considered isolated populations or variants of the same species. Pseudocorynopoma doriae is a characid diagnosed from its single congener by the number of anal-fin rays and sexually dimorphic characters of males, including distinct fin colouration. The authors found variation in the colour pattern between isolated populations previously identified as P. doriae but no variation in scale or fin-ray counts. They analysed molecular evidence at the population level and morphological differences related to life history (e.g., colour dimorphism related to inseminating behaviour). The results provide compelling evidence for the recognition of a new species of Pseudocorynopoma despite the lack of discrete differences in meristic data. The recognition of the new species is consistent with biogeographical evidence for the long-term isolation of the respective river drainages and with differences between the ichthyofaunal communities of these rivers.  相似文献

Comparative analysis of morphometric characters of surman goby Neogobius cephalargoides and of two subspecies of ginger goby N. eurycephalus is made. Characteristics liable to size variation and sex dimorphism are revealed. Independence of the investigated species and the diagnostic value of characters previously suggested for classification are confirmed. The obtained data confirm isolation of north-western populations of ginger goby as a separate subspecies N. eurycephalus odessicus and suitability of three meristic characters for differentiation of the subspecies: the number of rays in the second dorsal fin and anal fin and the number of transverse rows of scales.  相似文献

The Arabian cyprinodontid Aphanius dispar (Rüppell, 1829) is known to show considerable morphological variation. It has remained unknown, however, whether this variation is a result of environmental differences or allopatric divergence owing to geographical isolation. In this study, 11 populations of A. dispar from three geographically separated basins were analysed, that is, the Makran Basin (I, one river system), the Hormuzgan Basin (II, five rivers and three hot springs) and the Helleh Basin (III, two hot springs) in southern Iran. Statistical analyses do not indicate significant differences between the fishes from river and hot spring habitats (T‐test, p < 0.05), which is also supported by the Canonical Discriminant Analysis (CDA). Nevertheless, morphometric and meristic characters of the fishes, as well as otolith morphology and morphometry, demonstrate that six phenotypic characters discriminate the A. dispar populations of the three basins, that is, (1) predorsal distance (Prdd.SL), (2) head length (HL.SL), (3) pelvic fin length (Lplf.SL), (4) number of pelvic fin rays, as well as relative length of both the (5) medial part and (6) rostrum of the otolith. In addition, these characters display a consistent pattern of variation, thus providing support for the assumption that the phenotypically different A. dispar populations are a result of geographical isolation and not related to environmental differences. It is likely that the geological history of the drainage systems caused isolation event(s) that may date back to the Pleistocene (1.8 million years before present). The high phenotypic differences might suggest that the A. dispar populations from the three studied basins represent separate subspecies or even species.  相似文献

In this study, clonal lines from North American resident and migratory populations of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss adapted to different geographical conditions and with different domestication histories were characterized morphologically. Lines reared in a common‐garden experiment were characterized for external shape and meristic values, searching for a general pattern of morphological variation due to exposure to captive conditions. A sharp distinction was identified between wild and captive lines. The body profile was deeper in captive lines, with longer dorsal and anal fins and shorter and deeper caudal peduncles. Highly significant differences were also identified in meristic values among the lines but no consistent relation between meristic values and domestication status was detected. This morphological characterization will facilitate the selection of lines with divergent phenotypes for subsequent quantitative trait loci analysis, aimed at identifying genome regions linked with morphological adaptive response to captive conditions.  相似文献

Synopsis Sixteen meristic characters were examined among 10 stocks of rainbow trout to establish their inter- and intrastock variability and relative discriminating power. The number of vertebrae, dorsal fin rays, scales above and below and lateral line, oblique scale rows and pectoral fin rays were found to be the most useful meristic characters in identifying stocks. Examination of the extent of meristic divergence among 10 hatchery or naturalized stocks from various regions of the world, using analysis of variance, the generalized distance function and per cent overlap, revealed that each stock exhibited highly significant differences in at least one meristic character, thereby demonstrating a high degree of intraspecific variability in meristic expression. In multivariate terms, stocks from Idaho and Alaska were almost totally divergent from all other stocks examined. Multivariate analysis of meristic features proves to be a useful method for identifying the extent of phenotypic variability among and within divergent stocks of rainbow trout. The observed meristic variability in test stocks of hatchery fish is seemingly genetically set within the limits previously described for native populations of rainbow trout.  相似文献

Morphological characters, the pattern on the dorsal fin, some biological parameters, and variations of mtDNA control region were studied in graylings of the upper reaches of the Khovd River (western Mongolia). Obtained results demonstrated that grayling of this part of the river was presented by great (predatory) and small (benthophagous) forms of Mongolian grayling Thymallus brevirostris. The last form was erroneously equated to Arctic grayling Thymallus arcticus. However, genetic unity of great and small forms, homogeneity by meristic characters, and similarity in varying the color of scales and pattern on the dorsal fin attest their belonging to the same species. Water bodies of the Central Asian basin are also populated with populations of Mongolian grayling with mixed type of feeding and signs of external structure, which are typical for both forms in a different degree.  相似文献

In Mexico, the tilapia Oreochromis provides one of the most important sources of animal protein and income in a wide variety of communities throughout the country, however, their culture and production face severe problems because of lack of management information. Evaluated in the present study is the degree of morphological, meristic and allozyme variation of two tilapia strains, two species and one hybrid from two important reservoirs in Mexico, two tilapia fry production farms (TFPF) and an experimental production system (EPS), to diagnose the actual status and degree of variation among them. Twenty‐two presumptive loci were utilized to determine the genetic variation, structuring and distances among samples. Multivariate analyses of 11 meristic and 33 morphometric characters were also evaluated, including the distance from the end of the mouth opening to the most anterior dorsal fin (0.9894), distance from the anal fin base to the anterior part of the caudal fin (0.9845) and the base length of the dorsal fin (0.9839) which contributed to the separation of groups. The canonical discriminant functions for the morphometric and meristic variables show that the correct classification of the organisms in percentages and in the sites of origin was on average 72%. The tilapia from the reservoirs and the experimental production system had higher genetic variations than tilapia from the fry production farms (average He 0.310, 0.062, 0.151 for Metztitlan, Infiernillo and EPS, respectively, vs 0.024 and 0.000 for Los Amates and Zacatepec, respectively). The genetic data indicate that fishes of the TFPF should be monitored closely, as they are the main source of dispersion to the reservoirs. Present results show that these data could be a fast and reliable aid to the fisheries and management of tilapia in Mexico.  相似文献

Sailfin mollies, Poecilia latipinna, exhibit remarkable levels of intraspecific variation in reproductive behaviour. Larger males exhibit higher rates of courtship and lowered rates of gonoporal nibbling and gonopodial thrusting (forced copulation attempts). Larger males have relatively longer and higher dorsal fins than smaller males. The dorsal fin is a prominent component of the courtship display. Variation in fin measurements, behaviour patterns, and body size of mature males is continuous, and fin shape and behaviour patterns are allometrically related to body size. The allometric pattern is displayed by individual traits as well as by the morphological or behavioural traits in ensemble. Eight populations of mollies from markedly distinct habitats exhibited similar consistent levels of intrademic variation in the size of mature males. Detailed studies on three populations showed that dorsal fin shape could be described by the same regression relationship in all populations, and indicted that a male's shape was determined by his absolute body size. By contrast, there was some variation among populations in the relation of behaviour patterns to male body size. The pattern of this interdemic variation indicated that a male's behaviour patterns were influenced by his relative size in a population. Successful inseminations following forced copulations were rare. The average size of successful males was smaller than the average size of unsuccessful males in all three populations. These results indicated that successful insemination through forced copulation was, like behaviour patterns generally, more a function of the relative size of the male, than his absolute size.  相似文献

Synopsis An investigation of the effect of parentage and temperature on the expression of selected meristic characters of rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, reveals statistical differences in the number of vertebrae, dorsal fin rays and anal fin rays among test batches of progeny of different parentage. Batches of fertilized ova of the same stock or parentage, when incubated at 9.5 °C and 14.8 °C, produced lower mean dorsal and anal fin ray counts and a higher mean pectoral fin ray count at the higher temperature. Incubation temperature had no significant effect on the number of vertebrae.Significant statistical differences occurring in various characters among groups of rainbow trout of different parental origin provide convincing evidence of genetic inputs into meristic expression. However, the existence of both environmental and genetic inputs into meristic expression in rainbow trout necessitates further investigation before the meaning of observed meristic plasticity in rainbow trout can be resolved.  相似文献

A number of researchers have applied multivariate methods to elucidate the population structure of fishes. In this study, we also used multivariate techniques to examine meristic and morphological variations in the silver perch, Leiopotherapon plumbeus (Kner, 1864), from three Philippine lakes, namely, Laguna de Bay, Sampaloc Lake, and Taal Lake. We also aimed to determine whether or not there are meristic and morphological differences among the populations of silver perch from the three lakes, considering that this fish species was introduced from Laguna de Bay into Sampaloc Lake and Taal Lake in the late 1950s and early 1970s, respectively. A total of 710 specimens from four different sites were used in the study: 155 each from Binangonan and Tanay areas of Laguna de Bay and 200 each from Sampaloc Lake and Taal Lake. Based on analysis of variance, eight meristic and 26 transformed morphometric characters were selected for subsequent analyses. Nineteen (19) principal components extracted from the 34 significant variables accounted for 82.3% of the variation in the original variables. Factor analysis using varimax rotation produced four factors: factor 1 was dominated by fin measurements while the highest loadings for factor 2 were gill raker counts. Factors 3 and 4 were dominated by various body and head measurements. Cluster analysis showed specimens from Sampaloc Lake and Taal Lake in one group, while majority of the specimens from Binangonan and Tanay are in another cluster. This suggests a closer morphological similarity between specimens from Sampaloc and Taal. Discriminant analysis gave relatively high correct classification rates (76.13–95.50%). Lower gill raker count was the most discriminating variable. Since both the silver perch from Sampaloc Lake and Taal Lake were introduced from Laguna de Bay, the observed clustering and morphological variation could be attributed to similarities and differences in the lake environments. Laguna de Bay is a shallow eutrophic lake, while Sampaloc Lake and Taal Lake are deep lakes. Further studies, however, are needed to determine which of the myriad of biological and/or physico–chemical factors might have the greatest influence on the observed morphological divergence between the source population and transplanted populations that we found in our study.  相似文献

A decreasing population size is often causing species extinction, however, relict species persisting in small-sized populations counter this. We analysed spatial genetic variation and past changes in population size at the maternally-inherited mitochondrial DNA level to clarify the origin of all recently known isolated populations of Pholidoptera frivaldskyi occurring in the range of Carpathian Mountains. Along with that we analysed also morphological variation as some phenotypic traits can retain useful information on population genetic structure. We found a relatively low genetic diversity within isolated populations as 778 bp COI gene sequences revealed only 13 unique haplotypes (n = 173 individuals from 10 populations). The spatial analysis of molecular variance identified three geographically homogenous genetic clusters (one in Slovakia and two in Romania) with a high level of differentiation among them, suggesting restricted gene flow, whilst Bayesian skyline simulation reconstructed a negative demographic change through evolutionary time. Inferred genetic pattern clearly coincides with differences in males’ colour phenotype as the extent of pigmentation on the lateral pronotum varied significantly among genetic lineages. We suggest that geographical variation in the species populations has relict-like character and their isolated occurrence is not a result of recent introduction events. Identification of ‘evolutionary units’ may help in the conservation and management of this rare insect species.  相似文献

The median fins in extant actinopterygians are the product of millions of years of evolution. During this time, different developmental patterns for the dorsal and anal fins emerged leading to a high variation in median fin morphology and ontogeny. In this study, the development of anal and dorsal fins in atheriniforms is described and its consequences for the current phylogenetic hypothesis are discussed. Developmental series of five atheriniform species were investigated using clearing and staining as well as antibody staining. The skeletal elements of the second dorsal fin and the anal fin emerge in a bidirectional pattern. The first dorsal fin, however, arises separately in front of the second dorsal fin after this one is almost completely formed. The pterygiophores of the first dorsal fin, including the interdorsal pterygiophores, develop from caudal to rostral, but the fin‐spines of the first dorsal fin form in the opposite direction. This new mode of fin development has been found in all examined atheriniform species with two dorsal fins. Several morphological characters of atheriniforms, including interdorsal pterygiophores, are also found in one other taxon: the Mugiliformes. Thus, several dorsal fin characteristics may provide evidence for a closer relationship of these two taxa.  相似文献

The annual killifish genus Austrolebias includes approximately 38 species distributed throughout the Paraná-Plata basin and Patos-Merín system. Within the Austrolebias adloffi species complex, the Uruguayan populations of Austrolebias charrua were considered as an intergradation between A. adloffi and Austrolebias viarius populations. Austrolebias charrua presents an intermediate phenotype between both taxa and high levels of morphological and chromatic variability. In the present study, we incorporate different methodological approaches (molecular, morphology, and gamete ultrastructure) to elucidate the pattern of differentiation among the parapatric taxa ( A. charrua , Austrolebias reicherti , A. viarius ) distributed in a Biosphere Reserve Site. Analyses of cytochrome b sequences show high values of DNA polymorphism, in particular for A. charrua. This is in accordance with both morphological and gametic variation. Using a statistical parsimony network based on these sequences and analysis of morphological data, past fragmentation and range expansion involving perhaps secondary contact between A. charrua and A. reicherti could be proposed. Coloration pattern and morphometric analyses showed an unexpected higher similarity between the most distantly-related taxa, A. viarius and A. charrua . This could be the result of retention of ancestral polymorphisms, especially in A. charrua populations from ponds of higher elevation, or to directional selection acting in similar ecological environments. Because these annual killifish species are considered endangered, our work reinforces the high priority need to include them in a conservation programme.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 620–635.  相似文献

A new species of the bitterling genus Acheilognathus, Acheilognathus changtingensis sp. nov., was recently discovered from Changting County in Hanjiang River, Fujian Province, Southeastern China. It can be diagnosed by the following combination of characters: dorsal fin with three simple and 15 (occasionally 14) branched fin rays, anal fin with three simple and 12 (occasionally 11) branched fin rays; dorsal fin pale and anal fin slightly pale; white spots on anal-fin rays forming a transverse band, and anal fin margined with white band in males. Its unique characters are the many dispersed black spots on the dorsal, anal, pelvic, caudal fins, and on the head. Using the mitochondrial cytochrome Jb gene as a molecular marker, we reconstructed phylogenetic trees of A. changtingensis sp. nov. and other species in Acheilognathus to confirm its taxonomic status and study its speciation. Analyses of both morphological and molecular data consistently indicated the taxonomic status of the present new species. The results also show that A. changtingensis sp. nov. and Acheilognathus macropterus are sister species that diverged about 14.50 MYA by geographical isolation.  相似文献

Combined results based on morphological characters and analyses of partial sequences of the 16s rRNA and coI genes confirm the validity of a new, cryptic, symphurine tonguefish from the western North Pacific Ocean. Symphurus leucochilus n. sp., a diminutive species reaching sizes to c. 67 mm standard length, is described from nine specimens that were collected from fish‐landing ports and from trawls made at c. 150 m off Taiwan and Japan. Symphurus leucochilus shares many similar features with those of Symphurus microrhynchus and that of several undescribed species that are morphologically similar to S. microrhynchus. Symphurus leucochilus has also been misidentified as Symphurus orientalis in fish collections because of shared similarities in some aspects of their morphology. The new species differs from all congeners by the following combination of meristic, morphological and pigmentation features: a predominant 1–2–2–2–2 pattern of interdigitation of proximal dorsal‐fin pterygiophores and neural spines; 12 caudal‐fin rays; 89–92 dorsal‐fin rays; 76–80 anal‐fin rays; 49–51 total vertebrae; four hypurals; 75–83 longitudinal scale rows; 32–35 transverse scales; 15–17 scale rows on the head posterior to the lower orbit; absence of a fleshy ridge on the ocular‐side lower jaw and a membranous connection between the anterior nostril and lower part of the eye; a narrow interorbital space and dorsal‐fin origin anterior to the vertical through the anterior margin of the upper eye; absence of both dermal spots at bases of anterior dorsal‐fin rays and melanophores on the isthmus; uniformly yellow to light‐brown ocular‐side colouration without bands; dorsal and anal fins with alternating series of dark rectangular blotches and unpigmented areas; a uniform white blind side and a bluish‐black peritoneum. Despite overall similarities in morphology between S. leucochilus and S. orientalis, as well as between two of the nominal species morphologically similar to S. microrhynchus, analyses of partial 16s rRNA and coI gene sequences show that S. leucochilus, S. orientalis and the two other nominal species represent three distinct lineages within the genus Symphurus.  相似文献

Among two groups of wild and reared zebrafishes (zf) Danio rerio, all meristic characters considered were variable except the numbers of rays and pterygophores of the dorsal fin and the principal caudal fin rays, which tended to be canalized. Wild and reared individuals differed in the number of intervertebrae and anal pterygophores, and the dorsal and anal fin insertion. There were some skeletal anomalies of vertebrae and fins, particularly the caudal fin. Cephalic and Weber-apparatus anomalies were rare. Types and frequencies of anomalies were quite similar in the two zf groups, but differences emerged for several less frequent anomalies. Such differences and the phenotypic variability of D. rerio make this species a perfect teleost model for investigating the influence of experimental or unfavourable environmental conditions on skeletal development of both domesticated and wild fish.  相似文献

A new species of tooth-carp, Aphanius arakensissp. n., is described from the Namak Lake basin in Iran. The new species is distinguished by the congeners distributed in Iran by the following combination of characters: 10-12 anal fin rays, 28-32 lateral line scales, 10-13 caudal peduncle scales, 8-10 gill rakers, 12-19, commonly 15-16, clearly defined flank bars in males, a more prominent pigmentation along the flank added by relatively big blotches in the middle and posterior flank segments in females, a short but high antirostrum of the otolith that has a wide excisura, and a ventral rim with some small, drop-like processes, and 19 molecular apomorphies (17 transitions, two transversions) in the cytochrome b gene. It was suggested based on the phylogenetic analysis that the new species is sister to Aphanius sophiae from the Kor River and that Aphanius farsicus from the Maharlu Lake basin is sister to Aphanius arakensis plus Aphanius sophiae. A noticeable feature of the Aphanius diversity in Iran is the conservatism of the external morphology as well as morphometric and meristic characters, while distinctive differences are present in genetic characters, otolith morphology, and male color pattern. Transformation of the latter was probably driven by sexual selection.  相似文献

Synopsis A comparison of a suite of morphometric measurements and meristic counts of individuals of two landlocked lacustrine and two diadromous riverine populations of Galaxias truttaceus was carried out utilising both univariate and canonical variate analyses. Lacustrine fish had fewer dorsal and anal fin rays than did riverine fish. Differences were not as clear for gill rakers and vertebrae. Comparisons of serial counts were made with two derived lacustrine species, G. auratus and G. tanycephalus, also from Tasmania. Lacustrine G. truttaceus varied in the same direction as the derived species, relative to riverine G. truttaceus. From an analysis of 12 body measurements, the first canonical variate clearly separated lacustrine fish from riverine fish largely based on measurements associated with fins (pre-anal fin length, length of anal base, pre-dorsal fin length, maximum length of dorsal fin and inter-orbital width). An overall value for the correct classification of fish into groups based on locality was 84%. The percentage of fish classified into the wrong habitat (lake or stream) was much less than the percentage classified between localities within habitats. Overall morphological variation was greater between than within habitats. It is suggested that the differences in water movement and food type may in part account for the differences shown and that selective pressures peculiar to the lacustrine environment may be causing the lake populations to diverge from the riverine populations.  相似文献

The morphological characters, molecular-genetic features, and patterns of the dorsal fin in different subspecies and forms of Arctic grayling Thymallus arcticus populating Lake Baikal and its tributaries, Irkutsk Reservoir, and Lake Khubsugul have been studied. Three groups are discernable. The first includes the white and black Baikal graylings T. a. baicalensis, as well as the western Siberian T. a. arcticus; the second group is represented by the Kosogol grayling T. a. nigrescens, and the third is composed of T. arcticus ssp. from the Yakchii lakes (the Verkhnyaya Angara basin) with a phenotype close to graylings populating the upper reaches of the Lena River. All of them are distinguished by some morphological characters, elements of the dorsal fin pattern, and by body coloration. The populations of black Baikal graylings are genetically uniform, and their distinctions from white Baikal graylings are insignificant, which agrees with the absence of a considerable divergence of these forms by a complex of meristic characters. It is assumed that in the black and white Baikal graylings the exchange by genetic information has either ceased quite recently, or persists, although, insignificantly. Some genetic remoteness of the west Siberian grayling from Irkutsk Reservoir and Nizhnyaya Tunguska, closely related to the Baikal grayling, is recorded. The formation of the Khubsugul subspecies is possibly a result of the contact of grayling populations during the rearrangements of the river system in the last glaciation period in the upper reaches of Yenisei and Selenga in Mongolia. The habitation in the Baikal system of the Upper Lena graylings indicates a connection between the Lena and Baikal basins in the past. The results of a multivariate analysis of meristic characters and the sequences of mitochondrial DNA confirm the conclusion made by Svetovidov (1931, 1936), concerning the absence of grounds to assign a species status to the Baikal forms.  相似文献
