The pressure potentials (turgor pressure) in leaves of maize(Zea mays L.) and grain sorghum (Sorghum vulgare Pers.) plantssubjected to water stress in a controlled environment were estimatedfrom measurements of water and osmotic potentials. Changes inturgor pressure were larger in sorghum than in maize duringthe development of water stress and after re-watering. It issuggested that this indicates a lower cell wall elasticity insorghum than in maize. This fact may affect some of the physiologicalactivities of sorghum  相似文献

Two cultivars of sorghum (CK60 and Ochuti) and one cultivarof maize (H511) were grown in field plots in western Kenya inthe presence or absence of the parasitic angiosperm Striga hermonthica,with or without a single addition of nitrogen fertilizer (150kg N ha–1) using a factorial design. A progressive declinein rates of photosynthesis of Striga-infected plants were observedfor the sorghum cultivar CK60 from 30 d after planting (DAP)and for maize from 40 DAP, until measurements ended 63 DAP.At this time photosynthetic rates were 46% and 31% lower inthe Striga-infected sorghum and maize cultivars, respectively,compared to uninfected control plants. No decline in photosynthesiswas observed in the second sorghum cultivar studied, Ochuti,a local land race reported to show some tolerance to the parasite.The trends in photosynthesis reflected stunting of the cereals,as determined by the height of the youngest emerged ligule,however, only the grain yield of the sorghum cultivar CK60 wassignificantly reduced by the presence of the parasite. The nitrogenapplication influenced neither the growth nor the photosyntheticparameters measured, and possible explanations for the absenceof responses are discussed. It is concluded that S. hermonthicacan reduce photosynthetic rates of field-grown sorghum and maize,and suggest that an ability to maintain high rates of photosynthesiswhilst infected may be an important correlate of tolerance tothe parasite. F1 hybrids of Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench and their inbred parentswere analysed for NADH-nitrate reductase activity during theearly stages of seedling growth. In all the hybrids both mid-parentaland better parental heterosis were discernible in shoots whereasin roots two hybrids out of the three tested, showed heteroticlevels. The daily course of carbon influx and efflux was measured inyoung plants of Phaseolus vulgaris, Xanthium strumarium, Zeamays, and Atriplex halimus, exposed to low levels of salinity(NaCl) and varying daytime light intensities. Maintenance respiration(RM) was calculated. In Phaseolus, Xanthium, and Atriplex, RMrose with increasing salinity, approximately up to those levelsof salinity above which apparent signs of toxicity appear. Athigher levels of salinity RM declined. There was no responseof RM to salinity in Zea. At the levels of salinity tested,salinity did not affect the ratio of growth respiration to photosynthesis. At –5 x 105 Pa of NaCl salinity, the increase in RM inXanthium was calculated to account for 24% of the growth reductioncaused by salt. The remainder could be ascribed to reduced photosynthesis.The increase of RM is considered to be indicative of an adaptivemechanism, not present in the very salt-sensitive Zea.  相似文献

Negative linear relations were detected (P < 0·005)between the rate of progress from sowing to panicle initiationand CO2 concentration (210-720 µmol CO2 mol-1 air) fortwo genotypes of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]. Relationsbetween CO2 concentration and the rate of progress from sowingto first flowering were also negative in soyabean [Glycine max(L.) Merrill] (P < 0·025), but positive in cowpea[Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] (P < 0·025), albeitthat in both grain legumes sensitivity was much less than insorghum. Thus CO2 elevation does not delay flowering in allshort-day species. The considerable effect of CO2 concentrationon times to panicle initiation resulted in large differencesamong the sorghum plants at this developmental stage; with increasein CO2 concentration, plants were taller with slightly moreleaves and more pronounced apical extension. At the same timeafter sowing however, sorghum plants were heavier (P < 0·05)at 210 than at 360 µmol CO2 mol-1 air. In contrast, relationsbetween the dry masses of the soyabean and cowpea plants andCO2 concentration were positive and curvilinear (P < 0·05).It is suggested that the impact of global environmental changecould be severe for sorghum production in the semi-arid tropics.Copyright1995, 1999 Academic Press Sorghum bicolor (L.) Allenrolfea occidentalis(Chenopodiaceae) is a highly salt tolerantplant species that is widely distributed in inland salt marshesand salt playas of the western United States. We investigatedthe influence of dormancy-relieving compounds (fusicoccin, ethephon,nitrate and thiourea) in alleviating salinity stress on theseed germination ofA. occidentalis. Seed germination decreasedwith an increase in salinity and no seed germinated at 800 mMNaCl.Fusicoccin (5 µM), ethephon (10 mM) and nitrogenous compounds(20 mMnitrate and 10 mMthiourea) were able to counteract theinhibition produced by salinity treatments. All dormancy relievingcompounds significantly (P<0.0001) promoted germination atall salinity concentations. Fusicoccin completely reversed theinhibitory effects of salinity on seed germination ofA. occidentalis.Ethephon application significantly promoted germination at allsalinities. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an aqueousextract of grain sorghum dust increases macromolecular efflux from thenasal mucosa in vivo and, if so, whether this response is mediated, inpart, by substance P. Suffusion of grain sorghum dust extract on the insitu nasal mucosa of anesthetized hamsters elicits a significantincrease in clearance of fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled dextran(FITC-dextran; mol mass, 70 kDa; P < 0.05). This response is significantly attenuated byCP-96345 and RP-67580, two selective, but structurally distinct,nonpeptide neurokinin 1 (substance P)-receptor antagonists, but not byCP-96344, the2R,3Renantiomer of CP-96345 (P < 0.05). CP-96345 has no significant effects on adenosine-induced increase in clearance of FITC-dextran from the insitu nasal mucosa. CP-96345 and RP-67580, but not CP-96344, significantly attenuate substance P-induced increases in clearance ofFITC-dextran from the in situ nasal mucosa(P < 0.05). Collectively, these datasuggest that grain sorghum dust elicits neurogenic plasma exudationfrom the in situ nasal mucosa.

Aniline blue fluorescence was used to study the growth of maizepollen tubes in the stigmas of 13 diverse sorghum accessions.In 12, only short maize pollen tubes were formed, but in thesingle exception (Sorghum nervosum Nr481) maize pollen tubesgrew at least as far as the base of the style. The S. bicolorgenotypes S9B and CMS (a cytoplasmic male sterile line) werehybridized with Nr481, and analysis of maize pollen tube growthin F1 plants, and BC1 plants using Nr481 as the recurrent parent,suggested that differences in inhibition of pollen tube growthwere due to variation at a single locus, which we propose todesignate lap (Inhibition of alien pollen tubes). AccessionNr481 appears to be homozygous for a recessive allele permittingmaize pollen tube growth. Attempts were made to produce sorghumx maize hybrids using Nr481 and CMS derivatives which were knownto allow maize pollen tube growth to the base of the style.A putative hybrid endosperm was obtained in one Nr481 x Seneca60 maize cross, but this was not repeatable and no hybrid plantswere produced. A fundamental problem may be the large size ofthe maize pollen tube, which could have difficulty growing throughthe sorghum ovary and in entering the micropyle. Sorghum bicolor spp. bicolor (L.) The leaf senescence pattern was examined in water-stressed malesterile and fertile lines of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and sorghum(Sorghum vulgare). The study was conducted at the seedling stageand during grain development. The loss of leaf area and chlorophyllcontent induced by water stress was similar in the male sterileand fertile lines of wheat at the seedling stage. At the grainfilling stage, leaf senescence occurred at a faster rate inthe fertile lines as compared to sterile lines of both wheatand sorghum. The effects of salinity on growth, water relations, glycinebetainecontent, and ion accumulation in the perennial halophyte Atriplexgriffithii var. stocksii were determined. The following questionswere addressed: (1) What effect does salinity have on growthresponses at different ages? (2) Is A. griffithii an ion accumulator?(3) Does A. griffithii accumulate glycinebetaine in responseto salinity? Atriplex griffithii plants were grown in pots at0, 90, 180 and 360  m M NaCl in sand culture in a plantgrowth chamber and plants were harvested after 30, 60 and 90d. Plant total dry weight was significantly inhibited at 360m M NaCl. Root growth showed a substantial promotion at 90 mM NaCl. The water potential and osmotic potential of shootsbecame more negative with increasing salinity and time of growth.The Na+and Cl-content in both shoots and roots increased withincreases in salinity. Increased treatment levels of NaCl induceddecreases in Ca+, K+and Mg2+in plants. Atriplex griffithii accumulateda large quantity of ions, with the ash content reaching 39%of the dry weight in leaves. Inorganic ion accumulation is significantin osmotic adjustment and facilitates water uptake along a soil-plantgradient. Glycinebetaine concentration was low in roots, andin stems it increased with increases in salinity. The estuarine bivalve Cerastoderma edule and the lagoonal C.glaucum were exposed in the laboratory to different salinityregimes and the effects in the osmotic concentration of themantle cavity liquid, extrapallial fluid and haemolymph determined.The behavioural responses of the two cockles to changing salinityand exposure to air were investigated by monitoring valve movements. Both C. edule and C. glaucum are euryhaline osmo-conformerswhen exposed to different environmental salinities, but differencesare seen in their behavioural responses to sudden exposure tolow salinity and cyclic changes in salinity. C. glaucum postponedthe effect of sudden exposure to low salinity by complete valveclosure whilst C. edule partially closed its valves and intermittentlygaped during the same period. During exposure to a sinusoidalfluctuating salinity regime, C. edule responded first to thefalling salinity by retracting siphons and partially closingvalves. In contrast, C. glaucum responded more slowly to fallingsalinity than did C. edule. C. glaucum closed valves faster,accompanied by erratic adductions. During an acclimation period in a continuous automatic tidalsystem, C. edule and C. glaucum were entrained to the tidalrhythm of immersion and exposure to air and demonstrated differentresponses of valve gaping and adductions. This rhythm was lostupon continuous submergence indicating the rhythm is exogenouslyinduced. The two cockles gaped during exposure to air at lowtide, suggesting that both can respire in air, contrary to previousreports. The different physiological and behavioural responses of C.edule and C. glaucum to changing salinity and exposure to airwere found to be a reflection of their respective environments.C. edule is adapted to daily changes and stresses in its estuarinehabitat whilst C. glaucum is subjected to seasonal changes. Protein bodies isolated from the starchy endosperm of ungerminatedsorghum exhibited some autolytic activity but seemed incapableof significant self-hydrolysis. Enzyme assay, transmission electronmicroscopy, sodium dodecyl sulphate—polyacrylamide gelelectrophoresis and amino acid analysis revealed that a proteinaseextract from germinated sorghum could degrade the protein bodiesin a manner resembling that which takes place in vivo. The proteinbodies were degraded mainly from the periphery. Glutelin (matrixprotein) was first hydrolysed, followed by the prolamin proteinbody protein. Proteinase extracts from both the germ and endospermof germinated sorghum were capable of degrading the proteinbodies. This finding is consistent with the concept that theproteinase is synthesized in the germ and then secreted intothe starchy endosperm during germination. Sensitivity to photoinhibition was assessed in sorghum infectedwith the angiosperm root parasite Striga her-monthica and inuninfected sorghum plants, at four times during the developmentof the host-parasite association. Photoinhibition was inducedby exposing either leaf discs or intact leaves to a photosyntheticphoton flux density of 2000 µmol m–2 s–1 for4 h. The inhibition of apparent quantum yield (a) and photosynthesisin high light (A1500) were assessed in leaf discs using an oxygenelectrode and the recovery of these from photoinhibition wasfollowed in intact leaves using an infra-red gas analyser. Fromsoon after attachment of the parasite, infected sorghum plantshad a lower A1500. During the period when Striga induced a loweringof A1500, a was more sensitive to photoinhibition in Striga-infectedplants. However, at the same time, the high-light-induced inhibitionof A1500 was similar in Striga-infected and uninfected plants.Recovery of both a and A1500 was incomplete after 6 h and thetime-course of recovery was similar in Striga-infected and uninfectedplants. The results indicate that Striga-infected plants weremore sensitive to photoinhibition and that photoinhibition wasprimarily due to damage to electron transport/photo-phosphorylationand not disablement of the recovery processes. The seasonal succession of copepod species was studied fromNovember 1976 through October 1978 in the Swartkops and Sundaysriver estuaries. South Africa. Acartia natalensis appeared inthe plankton in spring and reaches maximum abundance duringsummer and autumn. It was replaced by A. longipatella in lateautumn which reached maximum abundance in winter and spring.Cycles of dominance are regulated by the interaction of temperature,salinity and competition between the two species. A natalensis a more tolerant of low salinity and the replacementof A. longipatella by A. natalensis starts in the upper estuaryand spreads seawards. Maximum abundance of A. natalensis isattained in water of lower salinity than in the case of A. longipatella.In the Sundays estuary A. natalensis appeared briefly in thelatter half of the study and in the upper and middle estuaryonly. In the lower estuary A. longipatella was present duringall seasons. This was due to the absence of competition fromA. natalensis, high salinity and lower summer temperatures dueto marine influence. A third species of copepod, Pseudodiaptomushessei functions as a pioneer species, exploiting "new water"after flooding or strong fresh water inflow. High abundancemay therefore occur during any season and no competition betweenP. hessei and either species of Acartia was observed.  相似文献

以纤维高粱和普通高粱种子为材料,将NaCl、Na2SO4和NaHCO3按不同比例混合,模拟15种盐度和碱度各不相同的复杂盐碱条件,采用培养皿纸上发芽法研究了混合盐碱胁迫对两种高粱种子萌发及幼苗生长的影响,以探讨两种高粱种子和幼苗的耐盐碱能力及在盐碱胁迫下的变化规律。结果表明,低盐低碱环境促进了两种高粱种子的萌发;随着盐碱胁迫的增强,高粱种子的萌发率、萌发指数与对照相比均显著下降,而纤维高粱的累积萌发率下降幅度较普通高粱小,表明纤维高粱对盐渍环境的适应性略高于普通高粱。在高粱幼苗生长过程中,随着盐碱胁迫的增强,两种高粱的幼根和幼芽长均显著下降,且与对照均具有显著性差异。盐度对两种高粱的萌发率、萌发指数、幼苗长均有极显著影响,盐度与pH相互作用对两种高粱的幼根长有极显著影响。  相似文献

The effect of environmental salinity on cell growth, and onthe composition and accumulation of compatible solutes, or osmotica,of five yeast strains (Aureobasidium pullulans, Candida sp.,Cryptococcus albidus var. albidus, Debaryomyces hansenii andRhodotorula rubra) was compared. All these yeast were isolatedfrom manne environments, but were able to grow in the absenceof salt and should therefore be considered as halotolerant strains.According to their specific cell growth rates at different saltconcentrations, these strains vary in their capacity to osmoticallyadjust to modifications in external salinity. Candida sp. appearsto be the most sensitive since the maximum salt concentrationat which it can grow is 1.54 mol 1-1 NaCl; however, it showedthe highest specific cell growth in the range of 0 to 1.54 mol1-1 NaCl. Aureobasidium pullulans, on the other hand, showedthe lowest specific growth rate, but the highest halotolerancerange from 0 to 5.13 mol 1-1 NaCl. Debaryomyces hansenii, incontrast, showed higher specific growth at this salinity rangeCryptococcus albidus var. albidus and Rhodotorula rubra showedsimilar specific cell growth rate values and halotolerance between0 and 2.45 mol 1-1 NaCl. The protein and carbohydrate contentof the biomass of the different yeast cells, as a result ofexternal salinity vanation, remained practically constant. Themost important effects of the increase in salt concentrationin the culture medium were the reduction of cell volume andthe accumulation of low-molecular-weight metabolites (LMWM).which appear to act as osmoregulators. Glycerol was found asthe major compatible solute in the different marine yeasts studiedherein with a total contribution of 64–96% of the internalcell osmolarity. Other LMWM, like carbohydrates and amino acids,contributed to a lesser extent to compensate for the rise inosmotic pressure promoted by the salinity of the external environment.  相似文献

A glasshouse experiment was carried out to investigate the factorscontrolling the abstraction of xylem fluid from its host bythe parasiteStriga hermonthica(Scrophulariaceae).Strigahad amean daily transpiration rate far exceeding that of its hostsorghum (Sorghum bicolor), with infestation byStrigaalso shownto lower the transpiration rate of the host. Stopping the host'stranspiration was shown to decrease the transpiration rate ofthe parasite. Stopping the parasite's transpiration only gavean initial increase in the host's transpiration rate which wasnot sustained. The parasite had a lower water potential thanits host, values being -0.42 MPa and -0.23 MPa, respectively,and an accompanying higher osmotic pressure of 0.68 MPa against0.51 MPa for sorghum. Modifying the water potential gradientby bagging both partners together showed that the differentialin osmotic pressure and water potential was largely maintainedby the parasite's higher rate of transpiration. A favourablewater potential gradient towards the parasite still existedfollowing the cessation of transpiration, this being generatedby the haustorial resistance to hydraulic conductivity whichwas found to be some 1.5–4.5 times greater than that offeredby the parasite shoot. One year of field data on the Yucatan, Mexico, North Coast hypersalinepools and salterns revealed extreme alkalinity, salinity andtemperature conditions, hypoxia and in some instances, totaldesiccation. The four locations were similar in water temperature,nitrites, and phosphates, but differed in salinity, oxygen content,water depth, nitrates, ammonia, silicates, carbonates, sulfates,and pH. The dominant multicellular organism in these hypersalineecosystems is Artemia, the brine shrimp. Artemia abundance andpopulation dynamics were significantly correlated with specificenvironmental conditions, most often water temperature, salinity,and oxygen concentration. The different schedules of Artemiaand cyst production at each location suggest habitat partitioningamong the brine shrimp populations across the North Coast ofthe Yucatan Peninsula. Our results provide an ecological basisfor rational management of these endangered hypersaline ecosystems.  相似文献
