Rice seedlings were grown in hydroponic culture to determine the effects of external Zn and P supply on plant uptake of Cd in the presence or absence of iron plaque on the root surfaces. Iron plaque was induced by supplying 50 mg l−1 Fe2+ in the nutrient solution for 2 day. Then 43-day-old seedlings were exposed to 10 μmol l−1 Cd together with 10 μmol l−1 Zn or without Zn (Zn–Cd experiment), or to 10 μmol l−1 Cd with 1.0 mmol l−1 P or without P (P–Cd experiment) for another 2 day. The seedlings were then harvested and the concentrations of Fe, Zn, P and Cd in dithionite–citrate–bicarbonate (DCB) extracts and in roots and shoots were determined. The dry weights of roots and shoots of seedlings treated with 50 mg l−1 Fe were significantly lower than when no Fe was supplied. Adsorption of Cd, Zn and P on the iron plaque increased when Fe was supplied but Cd concentrations in DCB extracts were unaffected by external Zn or P supply levels. Cd concentrations in shoots and roots were lower when Fe was supplied. Zn additions decreased Cd concentrations in roots but increased Cd concentrations in shoots, whereas P additions significantly increased shoot and root Cd concentrations and this effect diminished when Fe was supplied. The percentage of Cd in DCB extracts was significantly lower than in roots or shoots, accounting for up to 1.8–3.8% of the plant total Cd, while root and shoot Cd were within the ranges 57–76% and 21–40% respectively in the two experiments. Thus, the main barrier to Cd uptake seemed to be the root tissue and the contribution of iron plaque on root surfaces to plant Cd uptake was minor. The changes in plant Cd uptake were not due to Zn or P additions altering Cd adsorption on iron plaque, but more likely because Zn or P interfered with Cd uptake by the roots and translocation to the shoots.  相似文献

The forms of Al for uptake by the roots and translocation from the root to the shoot were investigated in a buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench, cv. Jianxi) that accumulates Al in its leaves. The Al concentration in the xylem sap was 15-fold higher in the plants exposed to AlCl3 than in those exposed to an Al-oxalate (1:3) complex, suggesting that the roots take up Al in the ionic form. The Al concentration in the xylem sap was 4-fold higher than that in the external solution after a 1-h exposure to AlCl3 solution and 10-fold higher after a 2-h exposure. The Al concentration in the xylem sap increased with increasing Al concentration in the external solution. The Al uptake was not affected by a respiratory inhibitor, hydroxylamine, but significantly inhibited by the addition of La. These results suggest that Al uptake by the root is a passive process, and La3+ competes for the binding sites for Al3+ on the plasma membrane. The form of Al in the xylem sap was identified by 27Al-nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. The chemical shift of 27Al in the xylem sap was around 10.9 ppm, which is consistent with that of the Al-citrate complex. Furthermore, the dominant organic acid in the xylem sap was citric acid, indicating that Al was translocated in the form of Al-citrate complex. Because Al is present as Al-oxalate (1:3) in the root, the present data show that ligand exchange from oxalate to citrate occurs before Al is released to xylem. Enhanced cadmium accumulation in maize roots—the impact of organic acids   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Low molecular weight organic acids are important components of root exudates and therefore, knowledge regarding the mechanisms of cadmium (Cd) uptake and distribution within plants under the influence of organic acids, is necessary for a better understanding of Cd behavior in the plant–soil system. In this study, acetic and malic acids increased the uptake of Cd by maize (Zea mays L. cv. TY2) roots and enhanced Cd accumulation in shoots under hydroponic conditions. Concentration-dependent net Cd influx in the presence and absence of organic acids could be resolved into linear and saturable components. The saturable component followed Michaelis–Menten kinetics, which indicated that Cd uptake across the plasma membrane was transporter-mediated. While the K m values were similar, the V max values in the presence of acetic and malic acids were respectively 6.0 and 3.0 times that of the control. Zinc transporters were the most probable pathways for Cd accumulation. It was hypothesized that Cd(II)–organic acid complexes associated with the root zone, could decompose and liberate Cd2+ for subsequent absorption by maize roots; and that in the layer of the roots or within the root free space, depletion of Cd2+ was buffered by the presence of Cd(II)–organic acid complexes. Plant response to elevated Cd levels involved overproduction of organic acids in maize roots as a resistance mechanism to alleviate Cd toxicity.  相似文献

Release of large amounts of citric acid from specialized root clusters (proteoid roots) of phosphorus (P)-deficient white lupin (Lupinus albus L.) is an efficient strategy for chemical mobilization of sparingly available P sources in the rhizosphere. The present study demonstrates that increased accumulation and exudation of citric acid and a concomitant release of protons were predominantly restricted to mature root clusters in the later stages of P deficiency. Inhibition of citrate exudation by exogenous application of anion-channel blockers such as ethacrynic- and anthracene-9-carboxylic acids may indicate involvement of an anion channel. Phosphorus-deficiency-induced accumulation and subsequent exudation of citric acid seem to be a consequence of both increased biosynthesis and reduced metabolization of citric acid in the proteoid root tissue, indicated by increased in-vitro activity and enzyme protein levels of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.31), and reduced activity of aconitase (EC 4.2.1.3) and root respiration. Similar to citric acid, acid phosphatase, which is secreted by roots and involved in the mobilization of the organic soil P fraction, was released predominantly from proteoid roots of P-deficient plants. Also 33Pi uptake per unit root fresh-weight was increased by approximately 50% in juvenile and mature proteoid root clusters compared to apical segments of non-proteoid roots. Kinetic studies revealed a K m of 30.7 μM for Pi uptake of non-proteoid root apices in P-sufficient plants, versus K m values of 8.5–8.6 μM for non-proteoid and juvenile proteoid roots under P-deficient conditions, suggesting the induction of a high-affinity Pi-uptake system. Obviously, P-deficiency-induced adaptations of white lupin, involved in P acquisition and mobilization of sparingly available P sources, are predominantly confined to proteoid roots, and moreover to distinct stages during proteoid root development. Arabidopsis halleri is a Cd hyperaccumulator; however, the mechanismsinvolved in the root to shoot translocation of Cd are not wellunderstood. In this study, we characterized Cd transfer fromthe root medium to xylem in this species. Arabidopsis halleriaccumulated 1,500 mg kg–1 Cd in the shoot without growthinhibition. A time-course experiment showed that the releaseof Cd into the xylem was very rapid; by 2 h exposure to Cd,Cd concentration in the xylem sap was 5-fold higher than thatin the external solution. The concentration of Cd in the xylemsap increased linearly with increasing Cd concentration in theexternal solution. Cd transfer to the xylem was completely inhibitedby the metabolic inhibitor carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone(CCCP). Cd concentration in the xylem sap was decreased by increasingthe concentration of external Zn, but enhanced by Fe deficiencytreatment. Analysis with 113Cd-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)showed that the chemical shift of 113Cd in the xylem sap wasthe same as that of Cd(NO3)2. Metal speciation with Geochem-PCalso showed that Cd occurred mainly in the free ionic form inthe xylem sap. These results suggest that Cd transfer from theroot medium to the xylem in A. halleri is an energy-dependentprocess that is partly shared with Zn and/or Fe transport. Furthermore,Cd is translocated from roots to shoots in inorganic forms.  相似文献

An ‘alternating solution’ culture method was used to study the effects of chloride ions and humic acid (HA) on the uptake of cadmium by barley plants. The plants were transferred periodically between a nutrient solution and a test solution containing one of four levels of HA (0, 190, 569 or 1710 μg cm−3) and one of five levels of Cd (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5 or 5.0 μg cm−3) in either a 0.006M NaNO3 or 0.006M NaCl medium. Harvest and analysis of shoots and roots was after nineteen days. The distribution of Cd in the test solutions between Cd2+, CdCl+ and HA-Cd was determined in a separate experiment by dialysis equilibrium. In the nitrate test solutions Cd uptake was clearly controlled by Cd2+ concentration and was therefore reduced by HA complex formation. In the absence of HA, chloride suppressed Cd uptake indicating that Cd2+ was the preferred species. However complex formation with Cl enhanced uptake when HA was present because of an increase in the concentration of inorganic Cd species relative to the nitrate system. The ratio root-Cd/shoot-Cd remained at about 10 across a wide range of shoot-Cd concentrations, from about 3 μg g−1 (sub-toxic) up to 85 μg g−1 (80% yield reduction). The ability of the barley plants to accumulate ‘non-toxic’ Cd in their roots was thus very limited. Humic acid also had no effect on Cd translocation within the plant and the root/shoot weight ratio did not vary with any treatment. At shoot-Cd concentrations in excess of 50 μg g−1, K, Ca, Cu and Zn uptake was reduced, probably the result of root damage rather than a specific ion antagonism. The highest concentration of HA also lowered Fe and Zn uptake and there was a toxic effect with increasing HA concentration at Cd=0. However the lowest HA level, comparable with concentrations found in mineral soil solutions, only reduced yield (in the absence of Cd) by <5% while lowering Cd uptake across the range of Cd concentrations by 66%–25%.  相似文献

To assess the role of salicylic acid (SA) in alleviating cadmium (Cd) toxicity in hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) plants, the growth parameters, Cd accumulation, photosynthetic performance and activities of major antioxidant enzymes were investigated in hemp seedlings treated with 500 μM SA, under 0, 25, 50, and 100 mg Cd kg−1 sands (DW) conditions, respectively. Cd exposure resulted in a small reduction in biomass (12.0–26.9% for root, and 8.7–29.4% for shoot, respectively), indicating hemp plants have innate capacity to tolerant Cd stress. This was illustrated by little inhibition in photosynthetic performance, unchanged malondialdehyde content, and enhancement of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidases (POD) activities in hemp plants. Cd content in root is 25.0–29.5 times’ higher than that in shoot, suggesting the plant can be classified as a Cd excluder. It is concluded that SA pretreatment counteracted the Cd-induced inhibition in plant growth. The beneficial effects of SA in alleviating Cd toxicity can be attributed to the SA-induced reduction of Cd uptake, improvement of photosynthetic capacity, and enhancement of SOD and POD activities.  相似文献

The uptake and distribution of copper was examined in chicory (Cichorium intybus L. cv. Grasslands Puna) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentumMill. cv. Rondy) plants grown in a Nutrient Film Technique System (NFT) with addition of 0.05, 5, 10 and 20 mg Cu L-1. Biomass production of shoots and roots of both chicory and tomato was strongly depressed by Cu concentrations higher than 5 mg Cu L-1 in the rooting media. Although Cu concentrations in both shoots and roots of both species increased with increasing Cu concentrations in the rooting media, the increase in roots was very much greater than that in shoots, in which the range of concentrations was small. A large proportion of total Cu uptake was retained by roots except when plants were grown in solution Cu concentrations of 0.05 mg Cu L-1. Copper retention by roots limited Cu translocation to xylem and shoots. Copper adsorption by the root appears to buffer against increases of Cu in the rooting media. A cupric-sensitive electrode used in conjunction with total Cu analysis by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry (GFAAS) indicated that more than 99.6% of total Cu in xylem sap was in a complexed form. Large differences between measured and predicted Cu accumulation by shoots of tomato (0.134–0.243 mg Cu plant-1, 0.660–4.274 mg Cu plant-1, respectively) and chicory (0.095–0.203 mg Cu plant-1, 0.626–1.620 mg Cu plant-1, respectively) suggest that some xylem transported Cu is recirculated to roots via the phloem. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Direct plant uptake of metals bound to chelating agents has important implications for metal uptake and the free-ion activity model. Uptake of hydrophilic solutes such as metal–EDTA complexes is believed to occur via bypass apoplastic flow, but many questions remain about the relative importance and selectivity of this pathway. In this study, Brassica juncea (Indian mustard) plants grown in solution- and sand-culture conditions were exposed to metal–EDTA complexes and to PTS, a hydrophilic fluorescent dye previously used as a tracer of apoplastic flow. The results suggest that there are two general phases of solute uptake. Under normal conditions, xylem sap solute concentrations are relatively low (i.e., <0.5% of concentration in solution) and there is a high degree of selectivity among different solutes, while under conditions of stress, xylem sap concentrations are significantly higher (i.e., >3% of concentration in solution) and the selectivity among solutes is less. In healthy plants, xylem sap metal–EDTA concentrations were generally an order of magnitude higher than those of PTS and differences among complexes were observed, with CdEDTA2− exhibiting slightly higher xylem sap concentrations than PbEDTA2− or FeEDTA. Metal–EDTA complexes were found to dominate xylem sap metal speciation and the fraction of metal in xylem sap present as metal–EDTA was greater for non-nutrient metals (Pb, Cd) than for the nutrient metal Fe. Despite differences in root morphology between plants grown under solution- and sand-culture conditions, uptake of solutes was similar under both sets of growth conditions.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Cultivars of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk.) differ widely in their shoot cadmium (Cd) concentration. Previously, we suggested that low-Cd cultivars are better able to retain Cd in their roots and thus prevent root-to-shoot Cd translocation. In this study, we explored the roles of roots and shoots in Cd accumulation in a high-Cd (T308) and low-Cd cultivar (QLQ).

Methods

We used reciprocal grafting to determine the importance of roots and shoots in Cd accumulation, and a dithizone histochemical method to investigate Cd distribution in the roots.

Results

The T308 scion with QLQ rootstock accumulated less Cd than the shoot of non-grafted T308. The QLQ scion with T308 rootstock showed a significantly higher Cd concentration than that in the shoot of non-grafted QLQ. Cadmium induced thicker phellem formation in the main roots of QLQ than in those of T308 and only QLQ showed thickening of the outer cortex cell walls in lateral roots.

Conclusions

Shoot Cd accumulation was primarily determined by root-to-shoot Cd translocation, not root Cd uptake. The thicker phellem and outer cortex cell walls in QLQ than in T308 may be one reason why QLQ roots were able to retain more Cd, and thus reducing Cd translocation to shoots.  相似文献

Enhanced phytoextraction uses soil chelators to increase the bioavailability of heavy metals. This study tested the effectiveness of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid in enhancing cadmium (Cd) phytoextraction and their effects on the growth, yield, and ionic uptake of maize (Zea mays). Maize seeds of two cultivars were sown in pots treated with 15 (Cd15) or 30 mg Cd kg?1 soil (Cd30). EDTA and citric acid at 0.5 g kg?1 each were applied 2 weeks after germination. Results demonstrated that the growth, yield per plant, and total grain weight were reduced by exposure to Cd. EDTA increased the uptake of Cd in shoots, roots, and grains of both maize varieties. Citric acid did not enhance the uptake of Cd, rather it ameliorated the toxicity of Cd, as shown by increased shoot and root length and biomass. Cadmium toxicity reduced the number of grains, rather than the grain size. The maize cultivar Sahiwal-2002 extracted 1.6% and 3.6% of Cd from soil in both Cd+ EDTA treatments. Hence, our study implies that maize can be used to successfully phytoremediate Cd from soil using EDTA, without reducing plant biomass or yield.  相似文献

An important mediator of shoot physiological processes can be the supply of signal molecules (other than water and nutrients) from the root system. Root-to-shoot signalling is often considered to be important in regulating shoot growth and water use when soil conditions change without any demonstrable change in shoot water or nutrient status. Changes in xylem sap composition are often thought to be synonymous with changes in root-to-shoot signalling, even though there is considerable re-cycling of compounds between xylem and phloem. Techniques used to collect xylem sap are reviewed. Elucidating the roles of putative root signal molecules in planta has usually taken priority over identifying the sources of signal molecules in xylem sap. The roles of several signal molecules are considered. This choice is selective, and the failure of known signals to account for observed physiological changes in some systems has lead to the conclusions that other novel signals can be important. The efficacy of a given signal molecule can depend on the shoot water and nutrient status, as demonstrated by variation in stomatal responses to abscisic acid. If such variation is widespread in crop species, this may have implications for the increasing intentional use of root-to-shoot signals to modify crop water use and shoot architecture. Research into root-to-shoot signalling may become increasingly reductionist, in trying to evaluate the contribution of root signals versus local processes to observed physiological changes. However, future challenges are to successfully integrate this basic research into improved crop production systems.  相似文献

Hydrogen isotope fractionation during water uptake by woody xerophytes   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Stable isotope measurements are employed extensively in plant–water relations research to investigate physiological and hydrological processes from whole plant to ecosystem scales. Stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen are routinely measured to identify plant source water. This application relies on the assumption that no fractionation of oxygen and hydrogen isotopes in water occurs during uptake by roots. However, a large fraction of the water taken up through roots in halophytic and xerophytic plants transverses cell membranes in the endodermis before entering the root xylem. Passage of water through this symplastic pathway has been hypothesized to cause fractionation leading to a decrease in 2H of root xylem water relative to that in the surrounding soil medium. We examined 16 woody halophytic and xerophytic plant species in controlled conditions for evidence of hydrogen isotope fractionation during uptake at the root–soil interface. Isotopic separation (Δ2H = δ2Hsoil water − δ2Hxylem water) ranging from 3‰ to 9‰ was observed in 12 species. A significant positive correlation between salinity tolerance and the magnitude of Δ2H was observed. Water in whole stem segments, sapwood, and roots had significantly lower δ2H values relative to soil water in Prosopis velutina Woot., the species expressing the greatest Δ2H values among the 16 species examined. Pressurized water flow through intact root systems of Artemisia tridentata Nutt. and Atriplex canescens (Pursh) Nutt. caused the δ2H values to decrease as flow rate increased. This relationship was not observed in P. velutina. Destroying the plasma membranes of root cells by excessive heat from boiling did not significantly alter the relationship between δ2H of expressed water and flow rate. In light of these results, care should be taken when using the stable isotope method to examine source-water use in halophytic and xerophytic species.  相似文献

Translocation of nitrogen in osmotically stressed wheat seedlings   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Drabant) seedlings were grown in a ‘split root’ system where either the whole root system or one root half was subjected to osmotic stress for 24 h, using 200 g polyethylene glycol (PEG, molecular weight 4000) dm?3 nutrient solution. 15N-Labelled nitrate was fed to one of the root compartments and total N and 15N-labelling were measured in plant material and xylem sap. Untreated plants translocated 87% of the N taken up to the shoot, and 10% of this was then retranslocated back to the root. Recalculated on a root nitrogen basis, 36% of the label recovered in the root after 24 h had passed through the shoot. Significant labelling of xylem sap collected from non-labelled roots indicated cycling of organic N through the roots. PEG-treatment of the whole root system caused significant water loss in both roots and shoots. Uptake of nitrate and retranslocation of N to roots were inhibited, whereas cycling of organic nitrogen through the root was still measurable. Treatment of half the root system with PEG had minor effects on shoot water content, but reduced the water content of the treated root part. The total uptake of nitrate by the root system was unaffected, and the effect on the treated root half was comparatively small. Nitrate reductase activity (NRA) declined in PEG-treated roots even if high nitrate uptake rates were maintained. Shoot NRA was unaffected by osmotic stress. The data indicate that the reduction in water content of the root per se has only small effects on nitrate uptake. Major inhibition of nitrate uptake was observed only after treatment of a sufficiently large portion of the root system to given an effect on shoot water content.  相似文献

The translocation of manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) in white lupin (Lupinus albus cv. Amiga) was compared considering root-to-shoot transport, and redistribution in the root system and in the shoot, as well as the content at different stages of cluster roots and in other roots. To investigate the redistribution of these heavy metals, lupin plants were labelled via the root for 24 h with radionuclides and subsequently grown hydroponically for several weeks. 54Mn, 63Ni and 65Zn were transported via the xylem to the shoot. 63Ni and 65Zn were redistributed afterwards via the phloem from older to younger leaves, while 54Mn remained in the oldest leaves. A strong retention in the root was observed for 57Co and 109Cd. Cluster roots contained higher concentrations of all heavy metals than noncluster roots. Concentrations were generally higher at the beginning of cluster root development (juvenile and immature stages). Mature cluster roots also contained high levels of 54Mn and 57Co, but only reduced concentrations of 63Ni, 65Zn and 109Cd.  相似文献

Information on cadmium (Cd) uptake and transport is essential to understand better the physiology of Cd tolerance in plants. In this study, Cd uptake, translocation, and tolerance were investigated in AHA1 (Arabidopsis plasma membrane H+-ATPase gene) overexpressed plants. Exposed to 10 μM CdCl2, AHA1OX showed a higher root elongation, accumulated more Cd, and maintained better integrity of nucleus membrane of root tips in comparison to the control plant (WT), suggesting that AHA1OX was more Cd tolerant than WT. To investigate Cd tolerance mechanism of AHA1OX plants, we measured the activity of plasma membrane H+-ATPase and the secretion of citrate. Results indicated that treatment with 10 μM of Cd stimulated the activity of plasma membrane H+-ATPase and the secretion of citrate, while 30 μM of Cd inhibited them. AHA1OX had higher activity of H+-ATPase and secretion of citrate than WT. Addition of citrate enhanced root-to-shoot translocation of Cd significantly. A higher root-to-shoot Cd translocation was observed in AHA1OX than in WT plants. Treatment with low temperature or metabolic inhibitor (carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone) inhibited Cd uptake and translocation. The study of Cd forms using sequential extraction indicated that Cd was mainly present as a protein-bound form, and AHA1OX had more water-soluble Cd than WT. Taken together, our results suggested that the Cd tolerance of AHA1OX was associated with its root-to-shoot Cd translocation and secretion of citrate, which converts Cd2+ into less toxic and more easily transportable forms in plant cells.  相似文献

Sedum alfredii (Crasulaceae) is the only known Cd-hyperaccumulating species that are not in the Brassica family; the mechanism of Cd hyperaccumulation in this plant is, however, little understood. Here, a combination of radioactive techniques, metabolic inhibitors, and fluorescence imaging was used to contrast Cd uptake and translocation between a hyperaccumulating ecotype (HE) and a non-hyperaccumulating ecotype (NHE) of S. alfredii. The K(m) of (109)Cd influx into roots was similar in both ecotypes, while the V(max) was 2-fold higher in the HE. Significant inhibition of Cd uptake by low temperature or metabolic inhibitors was observed in the HE, whereas the effect was less pronounced in the NHE. (109)Cd influx into roots was also significantly decreased by high Ca in both ecotypes. The rate of root-to-shoot translocation of (109)Cd in the HE was >10 times higher when compared with the NHE, and shoots of the HE accumulated dramatically higher (109)Cd concentrations those of the NHE. The addition of the metabolic inhibitor carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP) resulted in a significant reduction in Cd contents in the shoots of the HE, and in the roots of the NHE. Cd was distributed preferentially to the root cylinder of the HE but not the NHE, and there was a 3-5 times higher Cd concentration in xylem sap of the HE in contrast to the NHE. These results illustrate that a greatly enhanced rate of root-to-shoot translocation, possibly as a result of enhanced xylem loading, rather than differences in the rate of root uptake, was the pivotal process expressed in the Cd hyperaccumulator HE S. alfredii.  相似文献

Xylem sap of sinker (tap) root, cluster feeding roots, lateral roots and from an age series of main stem extensions of 6-year trees of Banksia prionotes was collected and analyzed for principal organic and inorganic solutes. During the phase of root uptake activity in winter and spring, cluster roots were principal xylem donors of malate, phosphate, chloride, sodium, potassium and amino acid N whereas other parts of the root served as major sources to the shoot of other cations, nitrate and sulphate. Sinker root xylem sap was at all times less concentrated in solutes than that of lateral roots into which cluster roots were voiding exported solutes. Phosphate was abstracted from xylem by stem tissue during winter and it and a range of other solutes released back to xylem immediately prior to extension growth of the shoot in summer. Phloem sap collected from mid regions of stems was unusually low in potassium and phosphate relative to chloride and sulphate in comparison with phloem sap of other species, and its low potassium: sodium ratio relative to xylem indicated poor discrimination against sodium during phloem loading. Data are discussed in relation to the asynchronous seasonal cycles of nutrient uptake and shoot growth.  相似文献

In order to investigate the physiological basis of the differential Cd distribution and the degree of variation of this Cd distribution among maize inbred lines, six inbreds designated earlier as ‘shoot Cd excluders’ (B73, H99, and H96) and ‘non-shoot Cd excluders’ (B37, H98, and N28) were grown in nutrient solution culture at different external Cd levels or at different pH. The characterization of the inbreds according to their shoot/root partitioning of Cd was consistent, independent of pH or level of Cd supply. The Cd concentrations in the plants were highest at the highest pH of the solution cultures. Generally, there was a positive correlation between the Cd concentrations in shoots and xylem exudates. It was shown that the Cd concentration in the roots is particularly important in the Cd distribution process. Above a ‘critical’ internal Cd concentration in the roots, specific for each inbred, the ability to retain Cd is strongly diminished. It is concluded that structural and/or physiological characteristics of the roots are involved in Cd partitioning.  相似文献

In a pot trial growth and transpiration of 3-year-old Douglas-fir seedlings on an acid, sandy soil was examined at a deficient (30 kg N ha –  1 year –  1) and an excessive level (120 kg N ha –  1 year –  1) of NH4 application. Dissolved ammonium sulphate was applied to the pots weekly for two growing seasons. In half of the pots a complete set of other nutrients was applied in optimal proportions to the applied nitrogen. Water supply was optimal and transpiration was recorded. At the end of the second treatment season irrigation was stopped for 2 weeks during dry and sunny weather. Both high application of NH4 and additional nutrients increased shoot growth and transpiration demand in the first treatment year. The root system was smaller at higher N level and this reduced water uptake accordingly. In the second year the combination of high NH4 + and additional nutrients affected root functioning predominantly due to salinity effects and this seriously decreased water uptake capacity and shoot water potentials, finally resulting in tree death. Without addition of other nutrients the high NH4 + application resulted in a high degree of soil acidification, which damaged the roots, that showed a decrease in water uptake capacity. At the low NH4 supply level soil acidification was lower, and root functioning was not affected, and the trees recovered quickly from the imposed drought. Higher needle K and P status depressed transpiration rates at the low NH4 application rate. Received: 9 January 1995 / Accepted: 18 September 1995  相似文献
