Summary Daily and seasonal foraging patterns are described for nine species of ants occupying a temperate zone woodland. Two common dominant species, Prenolepis imparis and Formica subsericea, are active at different times of day and during different parts of the year. They appear to be limited by physical factors (temperature and light, respectively) while the subordinate species show a wider tolerance of physical conditions. The subordinate species exhibit peak foraging periods which overlap in large part with most dominant species. This temporal pattern of species activity is discussed in relation to the competitive relationships within this ant guild.  相似文献

Marine microbes often show a high degree of physiological or ecological diversity below the species level. This microdiversity raises questions about the processes that drive diversification and permit coexistence of diverse yet closely related marine microbes, especially given the theoretical efficiency of competitive exclusion. Here, we provide insight with an 8-year time series of diversity within Synechococcus, a widespread and important marine picophytoplankter. The population of Synechococcus on the Northeast U.S. Shelf is comprised of six main types, each of which displays a distinct and consistent seasonal pattern. With compositional data analysis, we show that these patterns can be reproduced with a simple model that couples differential responses to temperature and light with the seasonal cycle of the physical environment. These observations support the hypothesis that temporal variability in environmental factors can maintain microdiversity in marine microbial populations. We also identify how seasonal diversity patterns directly determine overarching Synechococcus population abundance features.  相似文献

Seawater samples were collected biweekly from the northern Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea, for Phytoplankton analysis during the period May 1998 to October 1999. Microscopic counts and HPLC methods were employed. Procaryotic and eucaryotic ultraplankton dominated throughout most of the year, with larger nano- and microplankton making up only 5% of the photosynthetic biomass. Moderate seasonal variations in the 0–125 m integrated Chl a contrasted with a pronounced seasonal succession of the major taxonomic groups, reflecting the changes in the density stratification of the water column: Prochlorococcus dominated during the stratified summer period and were almost absent in winter. Chlorophyceae and Cryptophyceae were dominant during winter mixing but scarce or absent during summer. Diatoms and Synechococcus showed sharp and moderate biomass peaks in late winter and spring respectively, but remained at only low Chl a levels for the rest of the year. Chrysophyceae, Prymnesiophyceae and the scarce Dinophyceae showed no clear seasonal distribution pattern. The implications of alternating procaryotic and eucaryote dominated algal communities for the Red Sea pelagic food web are discussed. Diatom assemblages from sediment trap samples collected during ten intervals between October 2003 and October 2005 in Sacrower See (NE Germany) were related to limnological and meteorological data. Sacrower See is a dimictic, 38 m deep, hypertrophic lowland lake (29.5 m a.s.l.). We identified distinct seasonal and interannual changes of diatom assemblages for the studied period. Diatoms showed a typical seasonal succession for temperate, dimictic, and eutrophic lakes. Stephanodiscus parvus, S. hantzschii, S. neoastraea, and S. alpinus had high accumulation rates during winter and spring, whereas species of the genera Stephanodiscus, Fragilaria, and Nitzschia were the predominant diatoms during summer and autumn. In a Canonical Correspondence Analysis, precipitation, air and water temperatures, epilimnetic calcium, pH, and total phosphorus concentrations together explained 70% of the variance of the diatom data. Interannual variability in the diatom assemblages during the two sampled years mainly seems to reflect changes in the total phosphorus concentration and temperature and secondarily the onset of the growing season and of stratification. We used 16S, 18S, plastid and internal transcribed spacer (for Synechococcus strains) sequencing to quantify relative microbial abundances in water-column samples and on sediment-trap-collected particles across an environmental gradient in the California Current Ecosystem (CCE) spanning a > 60-fold range of surface chlorophyll. Most mixed-layer dominant eukaryotes and prokaryotes were consistently underrepresented on sinking particles. Diatoms were the only phototrophic taxa consistently overrepresented. Even within this class, however, one genus (Thalassiosira) was a particle-enriched dominant, while a similarly abundant species was poorly represented. Synechococcus was significantly enriched on sinking particles at only one of four sites, but clade I was disproportionately abundant on sinking particles throughout the region compared with clade IV, the euphotic-zone co-dominant. The most abundant microbes on particles across the CCE were organisms with distributional maxima close to the sediment-trap depth (rhizarians), microbes associated with metazoans or sinking particles as a nutritional habitat (certain alveolates, Gammaproteobacteria) and organisms that resist digestive degradation of their DNA (Thalassiosira, Synechococcus). For assessing taxon contributions of phytoplankton to carbon export, our results highlight the need for sequence-based quantitative approaches that can be used to integrate euphotic-zone abundances, compute rates and account for taxon differences in preservation of sequence markers through trophic processing.  相似文献

Summary The short-term accumulation of chromate by the cyanobacteriaAnabaena variabilis andSynechococcus PCC 6301 has been described as consisting of a rapid and relatively low level of biosorption of chromate to the cell walls; no energy-dependent uptake was detected. This biosorption was dependent on chromate concentration and could be described by a Freundlich adsorption isotherm for both cyanobacterial species studied. Decreasing the external pH increased the chromate accumulation by both species. Over a longer time period with growth it was shown thatA. variabilis was capable of reducing chromate (VI) to chromium (III) and then accumulating the chromium (III).Synechococcus PCC 6301 showed no further interaction with chromate concentrations over the same time period after the initial biosorption.  相似文献

Temporal patterns of phytoplankton biomass and community structure are described for two Kenyan lakes and subsequently compared with patterns reported in other tropical and temperate lakes. Lake Naivasha had a lower and more seasonally variable (10×) biomass, with a seasonal shift between diatoms and blue-greens, while the L. Oloidien biomass was less variable (3.7×) and dominated by blue-greens. Biomass and chlorophyll a were strongly correlated and in turn were coupled to the level of total phosphorus. A total of 143 and 94 taxa were described for L. Naivasha and L. Oloidien, respectively. The comparative analysis showed: a) a paucity of exclusively tropical species; b) that more than 30 percent of the species in two highly saline Kenyan lakes were also present in the two freshwater lakes; c) no evidence for a postulated decline of phytoplankton species abundance with latitude from the temperate zone to the tropics; d) that the low fraction of chrysophyte biomass in tropical lakes is a function of trophy rather than of latitude; e) that the fraction of chlorophyte biomass in tropical lakes is generally higher than in temperate lakes; f) that the proportion of nannoplankton in the two Kenyan freshwater lakes is not different from that in temperate lakes of the same trophy; g) that seasonal or annual biomass oscillations in the tropics are not systematically lower than in the temperate zone; h) evidence for large inter-year difference in the max.:min. biomass ratio in the only tropical lake (L. Naivasha) for which such data are available; i) that an average biomass ratio appears predictable for tropical lakes from the proportion of the sediment surface in contact with epilimnetic water. Overall, no evidence was found that the freshwater tropical phytoplankton composition or dynamics differ in any fundamental fashion from that observed in the temperate lakes during the summer.Contribution number 147 of the Limnology Research Centre, McGill University.  相似文献

1. We used flow cytometry to characterize freshwater photosynthetic picoplankton (PPP) and heterotrophic bacteria (HB) in Lake Kivu, one of the East‐African great lakes. Throughout three cruises run in different seasons, covering the four major basins, phycoerythrin‐rich cells dominated the PPP. Heterotrophic bacteria and PPP cell numbers were always high and spatial variations were modest. This represents an important difference from temperate and high latitude lakes that show high fluctuations in cell abundance over an annual cycle. 2. Three populations of picocyanobacteria were identified: one corresponded to single‐cells (identified as Synechococcus by epifluorescence microscopy, molecular methods and pigment content), and the two other that most probably correspond to two and four celled colonies of the same taxon. The proportion of these two subpopulations was greater under stratified conditions, with stronger nutrient limitation. 3. High PPP concentrations (c. 105 cell mL?1) relative to HB (c. 106 cell mL?1) were always found. Lake Kivu supports relatively less bacteria than phytoplankton biomass than temperate systems, probably as a consequence of factors such as temperature, oligotrophy, nutrient limitation and trophic structure. 4. A review of PPP concentration across aquatic systems suggests that the abundance of Synechococcus‐like cyanobacteria in large, oligotrophic, tropical lakes is very high. 5. Photosynthetic picoplankton cell abundances in the oligotrophic tropical lakes Kivu and Tanganyika are comparable to those of eutrophic temperate lakes. This apparently contradicts the view that PPP abundance increases with increasing eutrophy. More data on PPP in tropical lakes are needed to explore further this particular pattern.  相似文献

Sequential stages of pigment degradation and ultrastructural changes were examined in cyanobacteria Anabaena variabilis ATCC 29413, Synechococcus sp. PCC 6301 (Anacystis nidulans) and S. elongatus B-267 during irradiation of cell suspensions with high-intensity light. Early manifestations of photooxidative destruction were evident as profound changes in ultrastructure of thylakoids; in A. variabilis these changes appeared even before bleaching of pigments. Concomitant to these alterations, the cytoplasmic matrix turned homogenous and the nucleoid was subject to degradation, while ultrastructural changes of cytoplasmic membrane and cell walls became evident in some species. In A. variabilis these changes were related to a subsequent autolysis of cells. Synechococcus strains demonstrated comparatively high resistance to irradiation. The experimental data were compared with previously described behavior of the same species of cyanobacteria cultured under photooxidative conditions. This comparison revealed principal similarity and species-specific features in the destructive changes of thylakoids and other cell components of cyanobacterial cells.  相似文献

A mathematical model of predator-prey interactions was used to predict the relationship between population size and cellular growth rate in a two-tiered trophic system consisting of Synechococcus PCC 6301 and Tetrahymena pyriformis. As predicted, axenic chemostat cultures of Synechococcus responded to increased nutrient availability by expanding the equilibrium population size without a concurrent change in growth rate. Likewise, the addition of the predator Tetrahymena pyriformis decreased the Synechococcus population size by 85% and increased the Synechococcus growth rate. Synechococcus populations in the surface waters of the Gulf of Mexico were sampled to ascertain whether the relationship between population size and cellular 16S rRNA concentration conformed to that predicted by the model. Direct counts of autofluorescent cells in size-fractionated seawater samples provided an estimate of Synechococcus population size. The growth rate of in situ populations was estimated by measuring the extent of hybridization of an oligonucleotide probes complementary to Synechococcus 16S rRNA, based on evidence that ribosomal RNA content increases concurrently with growth rate. The comparison of in situ population sizes and specific growth rates revealed that relatively large Synechococcus populations were growing slowly, indicative of nutrient limitation, and that quickly growing populations were relatively small, as predicted for predator-limited populations.  相似文献

We investigated seasonal variation of grazing impact of the pigmented nanoflagellates (PNF) with different sizes upon Synechococcus in the subtropical western Pacific coastal waters using grazing experiments with fluorescently labeled Synechococcus (FLS). For total PNF, conspicuous seasonal variations of ingestion rates on Synechococcus were found, and a functional response was observed. To further investigate the impact of different size groups, we separated the PNF into four categories (<3, 3–5, 5–10, and >10 μm). Our results indicated that the smallest PNF (<3 μm PNF) did not ingest FLS and was considered autotrophic. PNF of 3–5 μm in size made up most of the PNF community; however, their ingestion on Synechococcus was too low (0.1–1.9 Syn PNF−1 h−1) to support their growth, and they had to depend on other prey or photosynthesis to survive. The ingestion rate of the 3–5 μm group exhibited no significant seasonal variation; by contrast, the ingestion rates of 5–10 and >10 μm PNFs showed significant seasonal variation. During the warm season, 3–5 μm PNF were responsible for the grazing of 12% of Synechococcus production, 5–10 μm PNF for 48%, and >10 μm PNF for 2%. Taken together, our results demonstrate that the PNF of 3–10 μm consumed most Synechococcus during the warm season and exhibited a significant functional response to the increase in prey concentration.  相似文献

1. We applied Reynolds's approach to the study of phytoplankton ecology through functional associations of species to identify possible algal species, which associate with the freshwater cyanobacterium Synechococcus. Previously an association among Synechococcus spp. and small‐celled chlorophytes (association Z) has been recognised by evaluating phytoplankton associations according to functional criteria. 2. Biomass data for phytoplankton and picocyanobacteria from Lago Maggiore spanning more years were organised in a matrix and a cluster analysis was performed. The results showed four groups separated at a linkage distance of 0.20. Mixotrophic species which clustered with Synechococcus spp. were Ceratium hirundinella, Chrysochromulina parva, Cryptomonas erosa, Cryptomonas ovata, Dinobryon bavaricum, Dinobryon sociale, Rhodomonas minuta and Uroglena americana. The redundancy analysis (RDA) consolidated the association of Synechococcus with C. hirundinella and R. minuta showing greater probability of occurrence than random aggregates of species. 3. The association Synechococcus spp. –C. hirundinella also appeared from temporal variation of their biomass. In early summer both these species increased at the same time; later, the peak of C. hirundinella (potential predator) coincided with a minimum of Synechococcus spp. suggesting a possible predator‐prey interaction. This implied that phytoplankton assemblages which form a functional group cannot only have similar adaptations and requirements but can also exhibit trophic interactions. 4. We propose to enlarge the association Z and create an association ZMX (where MX stands for mixotrophs) which would include Synechococcus spp. and C. hirundinella as the most representative of the mixotrophic species found in the oligotrophic Lago Maggiore.  相似文献

DNA containing structures (nucleoids) were visualized by 4′, 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) fluorescent staining in two groups of cyanophytes (59 filamentous oscillatorialean species and 12 coccal Synechococcus-like organisms) to test the possibility of using nucleoid morphology in cyanophyte taxonomy. The morphology of nucleoids (size, shape, and structure) in oscillatorialean species is specific for individual families. The morphology of the nucleoid in Synechococcus-like species agrees from the proposed separation of the genus Cyanothece from Synechococcus. A much different nucleoid morphology in three species of Cyanothece suggests that these species should be separated into a new genus. On the basis of other characters, the species could be returned to the genus Cyanobacterium. My results indicate that the morphology of nucleoids is a valuable character in the classification of the cyanophytes examined; thus, it is a prospective feature that could be used in the taxonomy of other groups of cyanophytes. Additionally, DAPI staining is not a complicated procedure. The new character is easy to see in samples taken from nature, both living and preserved.  相似文献

Forests of the subtropical and tropical regions of North America harbor cellular slime molds not found in the soils of temperate deciduous forests investigated previously. However, most species found in the temperate forest are common in the tropics. Although the diversity of forms is greater in the soils of tropical forests the numbers of Acrasieae per unit of soil are comparable. Characteristic of tropical and subtropical forest soils are Acrasieae bearing crampon bases, of which four new species of Dictyostelium are presently known. Also present, but less frequently isolated, are two other new species of the genus Dictyostelium and two still undescribed species of the Guttulinaceae. Occasional isolates of D. purpureum and D. discoideum were found that produce macrocysts, which seem, also, to be confined to tropical and subtropical areas. Macro-cysts were previously known only in D. mucoroides and D. minutum isolated from temperate forest soils. The occurrence and distribution of Acrasieae in warm temperate desert and mesquite-scrub, in subtropical hammock, and in tropical thorn, deciduous, seasonal evergreen, rain, and cloud forests were investigated. Acrasieae were well represented in all of these forests except desert. The number of species and the total populations were largest in seasonal evergreen forests. The composition of the cellular slime mold populations and the dominant species within these populations could be related to the soil environment as expressed by the dominant vegetation.  相似文献

A new freshwater epiphytic Prorocentrum species, Prorocentrum rivalis, from the temperate region of the Haute-Vienne, France, is described. This species is the third freshwater species identified among approximately 60 marine Prorocentrum species. This new species is described using scanning electron microscope and phylogenetic analyses by a polyphasic approach (LSU rRNA sequences combined with 9 morphological characters). The phylogenetic analysis attests that P. rivalis is close to other planktonic freshwater species and the freshwater Prorocentrum clade is evolutionarily derived from an epiphytic freshwater prorocentroid ancestor. The unique marine species in the freshwater clade results from an ecophysiological reversion. P. rivalis differs from other epiphytic taxa by its rarity, its temperate distribution and its ecophysiological needs. The phylogeny confirms also that all planktonic Prorocentrum species are evolutionarily derived from epiphytic/benthic ancestors.  相似文献

The widespread unicellular cyanobacteria Synechococcus are major contributors to global marine primary production. Here, we report their abundance, phylogenetic diversity (as assessed using the RNA polymerase gamma subunit gene rpoC1) and pigment diversity (as indirectly assessed using the laterally transferred cpeBA genes, encoding phycoerythrin‐I) in surface waters of the northwestern Pacific Ocean, sampled over nine distinct cruises (2008–2015). Abundance of Synechococcus was low in the subarctic ocean and South China Sea, intermediate in the western subtropical Pacific Ocean, and the highest in the Japan and East China seas. Clades I and II were by far the most abundant Synechococcus lineages, the former dominating in temperate cold waters and the latter in (sub)tropical waters. Clades III and VI were also fairly abundant in warm waters, but with a narrower distribution than clade II. One type of chromatic acclimater (3dA) largely dominated the Synechococcus communities in the subarctic ocean, while another (3dB) and/or cells with a fixed high phycourobilin to phycoerythrobilin ratio (pigment type 3c) predominated at mid and low latitudes. Altogether, our results suggest that the variety of pigment content found in most Synechococcus clades considerably extends the niches that they can colonize and therefore the whole genus habitat.  相似文献

The seasonal periodicity of algal numbers and biomass and of chlorophyll-a was investigated in the shallow, eutrophic, alkaline and peaty lake, Tjeukemeer, The Netherlands, during 1968–1978. Diatoms and Scenedesmus spp. were abundant throughout the whole period.Several blue-green algal species, occurring since 1971, usually dominated for most of the year. Relative abundance of algal species in Tjeukemeer during the study period were compared with that in 1955–1960.  相似文献

The number, size and developmental stage of young in the brood pouch of female Tenagomysis tasmaniae, Anisomysis mixta australis and Paramesopodopsis rufa was recorded throughout the year. Breeding was intensive from spring till the end of autumn for the three species. Calculation of the egg ratio for each species showed that their major reproductive peaks occurred during spring and summer. A winter depression in the breeding cycle was observed for T. tasmaniae and P. rufa, but A. mixta australis ceased breeding during winter. Seasonal variation in the length of gravid females and number of young carried was evident for these three species. Females were longer in spring and summer and carried more young than in autumn and winter. A linear relationship between female length and brood size was demonstrated for each species; annual and seasonal equations were calculated for females carrying each developmental stage. The seasonal equations showed that for a female of given length fecundity was greater during spring than any other season. Natality was estimated to be highest during late spring, summer and early autumn for the three species. No seasonal variation in the size of eggs was evident for the three species. The reproduction pattern of T. tasmaniae, A. mixta australis and P. rufa appears to be very similar to that reported for the majority of iteroparous coastal temperate mysids throughout the world.  相似文献

Phytoplankton pigments and community composition in Lake Tanganyika   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
1. A 2‐year (2002–2003) survey of chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments is reported for two off‐shore stations of Lake Tanganyika, Kigoma (Tanzania) and Mpulungu (Zambia), and from three cruises between those sites. Chlorophyll a concentrations were low (0.3–3.4 mg m?3) and average chlorophyll a integrated through the 100 m water column were similar for both stations and years (36.4–41.3 mg m?2). Most pigments were located in the 0–60 m layer and decreased sharply downward. Chlorophyll a degradation products (phaeophytins and phaeophorbides) were detected at 100 m depth, whereas carotenoids became undetectable. Temporal and seasonal variation of the vertical distribution of pigments was high. 2. The biomass of phytoplankton groups was calculated from marker pigment concentrations over the 0–100 m water column using the CHEMTAX software. On average for the study period, chlorophytes dominated in the northern station, followed by cyanobacteria T1 (type 1, or Synechococcus pigment type), whereas cyanobacteria T1 dominated in the south. Cyanobacteria T2 (type 2, containing echinenone), presumably corresponding to filamentous taxa, were detected in the rainy season. Diatoms (and chrysophytes) developed better in the dry season conditions, with a deep mixed layer and increased nutrient availability. Very large variation in the vertical distribution of algal groups was observed. 3. Our observations on phytoplankton composition are broadly consistent with those from previous studies. Our pigment data provide evidence for the lake‐wide importance of picocyanobacteria and high interannual variation and spatial heterogeneity of phytoplankton in Lake Tanganyika, which may render difficult assessment of long‐term changes in phytoplankton driven by climate change.  相似文献

The absence of essential biochemical nutrients, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids or sterols, has been considered as a mechanism determining trophic interactions between the herbivore Daphnia and its phytoplankton food source. Here, we experimentally quantify the sensitivity of two Daphnia species to decreasing amounts of dietary sterols by measuring variations in life history traits. The two species Daphnia magna and D. galeata were fed different mixtures of the sterol-containing green alga Scenedesmus obliquus and the sterol-free cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus; a higher proportion of Synechococcus in the food is equivalent to a decrease in dietary sterols. To address the significance of sterol limitation, the Daphnia species were also fed Synechococcus supplemented with cholesterol. In both species, somatic and population growth rates, maternal dry mass, the number of viable offspring, and the probability of survival were significantly reduced with the lower availability of sterols. A high correlation between the sterol content of the mixed diet and the somatic and population growth rates was found, and growth on cholesterol-supplemented Synechococcus fitted well into this correlation. Somatic growth of first-clutch neonates grown on 100% Synechococcus exhibited a pattern similar to that of somatic growth of their mothers grown on the different food regimes, which demonstrated the significance of maternal effects for sterol-limited population growth. Daphnia galeata had a twofold higher incipient limiting sterol level than D. magna, which indicated interspecific differences in sterol requirements between the two Daphnia species. The results suggest a strong impact of dietary sterols on life history traits and therefore, population dynamics of the keystone species Daphnia.  相似文献
