Poor balance control and increased fall risk have been reported in people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Traditional body sway measures are unable to describe underlying postural control mechanism. In the current study, we used stabilogram diffusion analysis to examine the mechanism under which balance is altered in DPN patients under local-control (postural muscle control) and central-control (postural control using sensory cueing). DPN patients and healthy age-matched adults over 55 years performed two 15-second Romberg balance trials. Center of gravity sway was measured using a motion tracker system based on wearable inertial sensors, and used to derive body sway and local/central control balance parameters. Eighteen DPN patients (age = 65.4±7.6 years; BMI = 29.3±5.3 kg/m2) and 18 age-matched healthy controls (age = 69.8±2.9; BMI = 27.0±4.1 kg/m2) with no major mobility disorder were recruited. The rate of sway within local-control was significantly higher in the DPN group by 49% (healthy local-controlslope = 1.23±1.06×10-2 cm2/sec, P<0.01), which suggests a compromised local-control balance behavior in DPN patients. Unlike local-control, the rate of sway within central-control was 60% smaller in the DPN group (healthy central-controlslope-Log = 0.39±0.23, P<0.02), which suggests an adaptation mechanism to reduce the overall body sway in DPN patients. Interestingly, significant negative correlations were observed between central-control rate of sway with neuropathy severity (r Pearson = 0.65-085, P<0.05) and the history of diabetes (r Pearson = 0.58-071, P<0.05). Results suggest that in the lack of sensory feedback cueing, DPN participants were highly unstable compared to controls. However, as soon as they perceived the magnitude of sway using sensory feedback, they chose a high rigid postural control strategy, probably due to high concerns for fall, which may increase the energy cost during extended period of standing; the adaptation mechanism using sensory feedback depends on the level of neuropathy and the history of diabetes.  相似文献

Many people with stroke experience foot drop while walking. Further, walking on uneven surfaces is a common fall risk for these people that hinder with their daily life activities. In addition, a few years after a stroke, lower-limb exercises become less focused, especially the ankle joint movement. The objective of this study is to determine the gait performance of older adults with chronic stroke on an uneven surface in relation to ankle mobility after a four-week bi-axial ankle range of motion (ROM) exercise session. Fifteen older adults with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis (N = 15; mean age = 65 years) participated in a total of 12 bi-axial ankle ROM exercises that consisted of three 30-min training sessions per week for four weeks. Basic clinical tests and gait performance in even and uneven surfaces were evaluated before and after training. Participants with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis showed significantly improved ankle functions, decreased ankle stiffness (from 0.140 ± 0.059 to 0.128 ± 0.067 N·m/°; p = 0.025), and increased paretic ankle passive ROMs (dorsiflexion(DF)/plantarflexion(PF): from 27.3 ± 14.7° to 50.6 ± 10.3°, p < 0.001; inversion(INV)/eversion(EV): 21.7 ± 9.7° to 28.6 ± 9.9°; p = 0.033) after training. They exhibited significant improvements in the walking performance over an uneven surface, step kinematics (walking speed 0.257 ± 0.17 to 0.320 ± 0.178 m/s; p = 0.017; step length: 0.214 ± 0.109 to 0.243 ± 0.108 m; p = 0.009), and clinical balance and mobility (Berg balance scale: 47.2 ± 4.7 to 50.1 ± 3.9, p = 0.0001; timed-up and go test: 23.9 ± 10.3 to 20.2 ± 7.0 s, p = 0.0156). This study is the first research to investigate the walking performance on uneven surfaces in the elderly with chronic stroke in relation to the ankle biomechanical property changes.  相似文献

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in 20 subjects with brain death (mean age, 33.2 ± 15.1 years) and 20 healthy volunteers (mean age, 29.8 ± 6.8 years). Brain death was due to head injury (n = 14), encephalitis (n = 3), brain-stem hemorrhage (n = 1), cerebellar hemorrhage (n = 1) or cerebral infarction (n = 1). The presence, latency and amplitude of the individual BAEP components and variations of the stimulus artifact were evaluated. The mean ( ± S.D.) amplitude of the stimulus artifact was 0.26 ± 0.12 μV in the brain-dead subjects and 0.09 ± 0.05 μv in the control group (P < 0.001, t test). The causes of the phenomenon of increasing stimulus artifacts in the evolution of brain death remain unclear.  相似文献

Background

Individuals with severe Z α1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency have a considerably increased risk of developing chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD). It has been hypothesized that compensatory increases in levels of other protease inhibitors mitigate the effects of this AAT deficiency. We analysed plasma levels of AAT, α1-antichymotrypsin (ACT) and secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) in healthy (asymptomatic) and COPD subjects with and without AAT deficiency.

Methods

Studied groups included: 71 asymptomatic AAT-deficient subjects (ZZ, n = 48 and SZ, n = 23, age 31 ± 0.5) identified during Swedish neonatal screening for AAT deficiency between 1972 and 1974; age-matched controls (MM, n = 57, age 30.7 ± 0.6); older asymptomatic ZZ (n = 10); healthy MM (n = 20, age 53 ± 9.6); and COPD patients (ZZ, n = 10, age 47.4 ± 11 and MM, n = 10, age 59.4 ± 6.7). Plasma levels of SLPI, AAT and ACT were analysed using ELISA and immunoelectrophoresis.

Results

No significant difference was found in plasma ACT and SLPI levels between the healthy MM and the ZZ or SZ subjects in the studied groups. Independent of the genetic variant, subjects with COPD (n = 19) had elevated plasma levels of SLPI and ACT relative to controls (n = 153) (49.5 ± 7.2 vs 40.7 ± 9.1 ng/ml, p < 0.001 and 0.52 ± 0.19 vs 0.40 ± 0.1 mg/ml, p < 0.05, respectively).

Conclusion

Our findings show that plasma levels of ACT and SLPI are not elevated in subjects with genetic AAT deficiency compared MM controls and do not appear to compensate for the deficiency of plasma AAT.  相似文献

Objectives: (1) To determine sleep quality and daytime sleepiness of edentulous elders. (2) To examine the association between oral health‐related quality of life and sleep quality. Methods: Data were collected at a 1‐year follow‐up from 173 healthy edentulous elders who had participated in a randomised controlled trial and randomly received two types of mandibular prosthesis. Subjective sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI, range 0–21), with higher scores indicating poorer sleep quality. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) was used to measure the level of perceived daytime sleepiness, and scores ≥10 indicated sleepiness. Results: The mean global PSQI and ESS scores were 4.7 ± 3.5 and 5.3 ± 3.9. There were no differences in sleep quality or sleepiness between those who wore their dentures at night and those who did not. Elders with frequent denture problems were sleepier during the day than those with fewer problems (p = 0.0034). General health (p = 0.02) and oral health‐related quality of life (p = 0.001) are significant predictors of sleep quality. Conclusion: Healthy edentulous elders, independent of nocturnal wearing of their prosthesis, are good sleepers. Maintaining high oral health quality of life could contribute to better sleep.  相似文献

Disuse typically uncouples bone formation from resorption, leading to bone loss which compromises bone mechanical properties and increases the risk of bone fracture. Previous studies suggest that bears can prevent bone loss during long periods of disuse (hibernation), but small sample sizes have limited the conclusions that can be drawn regarding the effects of hibernation on bone structure and strength in bears. Here we quantified the effects of hibernation on structural, mineral, and mechanical properties of black bear (Ursus americanus) cortical bone by studying femurs from large groups of male and female bears (with wide age ranges) killed during pre-hibernation (fall) and post-hibernation (spring) periods. Bone properties that are affected by body mass (e.g. bone geometrical properties) tended to be larger in male compared to female bears. There were no differences (p>0.226) in bone structure, mineral content, or mechanical properties between fall and spring bears. Bone geometrical properties differed by less than 5% and bone mechanical properties differed by less than 10% between fall and spring bears. Porosity (fall: 5.5±2.2%; spring: 4.8±1.6%) and ash fraction (fall: 0.694±0.011; spring: 0.696±0.010) also showed no change (p>0.304) between seasons. Statistical power was high (>72%) for these analyses. Furthermore, bone geometrical properties and ash fraction (a measure of mineral content) increased with age and porosity decreased with age. These results support the idea that bears possess a biological mechanism to prevent disuse and age-related osteoporoses.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to further explore the cartilage volume changes in knee osteoarthritis (OA) over time using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI). These were correlated with demographic, clinical, and radiological data to better identify the disease risk features. We selected 107 patients from a large trial (n = 1,232) evaluating the effect of a bisphosphonate on OA knees. The MRI acquisitions of the knee were done at baseline, 12, and 24 months. Cartilage volume from the global, medial, and lateral compartments was quantified. The changes were contrasted with clinical data and other MRI anatomical features. Knee OA cartilage volume losses were statistically significant compared to baseline values: -3.7 ± 3.0% for global cartilage and -5.5 ± 4.3% for the medial compartment at 12 months, and -5.7 ± 4.4% and -8.3 ± 6.5%, respectively, at 24 months. Three different populations were identified according to cartilage volume loss: fast (n = 11; -13.2%), intermediate (n = 48; -7.2%), and slow (n = 48; -2.3%) progressors. The predictors of fast progressors were the presence of severe meniscal extrusion (p = 0.001), severe medial tear (p = 0.005), medial and/or lateral bone edema (p = 0.03), high body mass index (p < 0.05, fast versus slow), weight (p < 0.05, fast versus slow) and age (p < 0.05 fast versus slow). The loss of cartilage volume was also slightly associated with less knee pain. No association was found with other Western Ontario McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores, joint space width, or urine biomarker levels. Meniscal damage and bone edema are closely associated with more cartilage volume loss. These data confirm the significant advantage of qMRI for reliably measuring knee structural changes at as early as 12 months, and for identifying risk factors associated with OA progression.  相似文献

This systematic review investigated the effect of low-load resistance training combined with blood-flow restriction (LL-BFR) on falls in older adults ≥60 years of age. The databases Embase, Medline, and Cochrane Library were searched from inception to October 1st, 2019 and reference lists of retrieved publications. Main outcomes were fall rates or proportion of fallers. Additional outcomes were physical performance, lower extremity muscle strength or function, and balance. Mean difference ±SD on falls and fall related outcomes were reported and Cochrane Collaboration’s risk of bias tool was used to evaluate quality of evidence. Eight RCT-studies met the inclusion criteria. None reported falls data. Assessing physical performance tests (n=12), 8/12 of the LL-BFR groups showed a significant within-group improvement and 5/12 significant between-group effects comparing LL-BFR to respective controls. For muscle strength tests (n=16), 9/16 showed significant positive within-group improvement and 3/16 significant between-group effects. One study reported data on balance with conflicting results. In conclusion, LL-BFR might increase physical performance and muscle strength in older adults ≥60 years of age. None of the included studies investigated the effect on falls. Larger adequately powered studies are required before introducing LL-BFR as an alternative exercise modality to decrease fall risk.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe aim of the study was to investigate the influence of age and/or obesity on postural control, ankle muscle activities during balance testing and force production capacities.Materials and methods4 groups; control group (CG; n = 25; age = 31.8 ± 7.5 years; BMI = 21.4 ± 2.5 kg/m2), obese group (OG; n = 25; age = 34.4 ± 9.5 years; BMI = 39.6 ± 5.4 kg/m2), elderly group (EG; n = 15; age = 77.1 ± 8.4 years; BMI = 24.4 ± 1.3 kg/m2) and obese elderly group (ObEG; n = 12; age = 78.6 ± 6.6 years; BMI = 34.5 ± 3.1 kg/m2) performed maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) before testing to calculate the maximal relative force of ankle plantar flexor (PF) and dorsal flexor (DF) muscles. Center of pressure (CoP) parameters and the electromyography (EMG) activity of PF and DF muscles were collected during MVC, quiet standing and limit of stability (LoS) testing along antero-posterior and medio-lateral axes.ResultsMaximal relative force was higher in EG and ObEG than CG and OG, respectively (p < 0.001). CoP parameters, distance traveled along the antero-posterior axis and EMG activity of PF were higher in OG, EG and ObEG compared to CG (p < 0.001) and in EG compared to ObEG (p < 0.05).The EMG activity of PF was positively correlated with CoP parameters in OG and ObEG (r > 0.6; p < 0.05). Maximal relative force of PF (r > −0.6; p < 0.05) was negatively correlated with CoP parameters in ObEG and EG.ConclusionObesity-related postural control alteration is associated with increased activity of PF. This neuromuscular adaptation may reflect deteriorations of the proprioceptive system and is likely additional to age-related muscular impairments. This may be a mechanism by which obesity increases postural control alterations in elderly.  相似文献

Correlates of dental visits among community‐residing Latino elders: a public health alert Objectives: To examine oral service utilisation in a probability sample of community‐residing Latino elders. Background: Older Latinos are at a potential increased risk of oral diseases, given their higher prevalence of co‐morbidities and lower rate of dental service utilisation. Methods: A prevalence survey was conducted among a random sample of Latino (largely Puerto Rican) elders (n = 205; mean age = 75.8; SD ± 5.3) in New York City during 2001–2002. A systematic random sample was drawn from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Beneficiary tape files. Current use of oral health services and self‐reported health conditions was obtained. Functional and cognitive impairment were assessed. Results: Less than half of the sample reported a dental visit in the previous year. The average time since the last dental visit was 54 months (SD ± 84.5). Last year dental visit compliers were more likely to be unmarried, living alone, with higher levels of education, fewer health conditions and less impairment with activities of daily living. In multivariate analyses, problem‐oriented behaviour, Medicaid beneficiary, education, living alone, chronic health conditions and mobility impairment explained 14% of the ‘time since last dental visit’ variance. Conclusions: Given that socio‐demographic and level of functioning determinants appear to influence the frequency of dental visits, a multilevel approach to oral health promotion is imperative.  相似文献

BackgroundA standard phenotype of frailty was independently associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes including comorbidity, disability and with increased risks of subsequent falls and fractures. Postural control deficit measurement during quiet standing has been often used to assess balance and fall risk in elderly frail population. Real time human motion tracking is an accurate, inexpensive and portable system to obtain kinematic and kinetic measurements. The aim of this study was to examine orientation and acceleration signals from a tri-axial inertial magnetic sensor during quiet standing balance tests using the wavelet transform in a frail, a prefail and a healthy population.MethodsFourteen subjects from a frail population (79±4 years), eighteen subjects from a prefrail population (80±3 years) and twenty four subjects from a healthy population (40±3 years) volunteered to participate in this study. All signals were analyzed using time–frequency information based on wavelet decomposition and principal component analysis.FindingsThe absolute sum of the coefficients of the wavelet details corresponding to the high frequencies component of orientation and acceleration signals were associated with frail syndrome.InterpretationThese parameters could be of great interest in clinical settings and improved rehabilitation therapies and in methods for identifying elderly population with frail syndrome.  相似文献

Poor posture control has been associated with an increased risk of falls and mobility disability among older adults. This study was conducted to assess the test–retest reliability and sensitivity to group differences regarding the time-limit (TLimit) of one-leg standing and selected balance parameters obtained with a force platform in older and young adults. A secondary purpose was to assess the relationship between TLimit and these balance parameters. Twenty-eight healthy older adults (age: 69 ± 5 years) and thirty young adults (age: 21 ± 4 years) participated in this study. Two one-leg stance tasks were performed: (1) three trials of 30 s maximum and (2) one TLimit trial. The following balance parameters were computed: center of pressure area, RMS sway amplitude, and mean velocity and mean frequency in both the anterio-posterior and medio-lateral directions. All balance parameters obtained with the force platform as well as the TLimit variable were sensitive to differences in balance performance between older and young adults. The test–retest reliability of these measures was found to be acceptable (ICC: 0.40–0.85), with better ICC scores observed for mean velocity and mean frequency in the older group. Pearson correlations coefficients (r) between balance parameters and TLimit ranged from ?0.16 to ?0.54. These results add to the current literature that can be used in the development of measurement tools for evaluating balance in older and young adults.  相似文献

Objective: Eating in the absence of hunger (EAH) may be a behavioral trait through which obesity‐promoting genes promote positive energy balance. The primary aim of this study was to compare children born at high vs. low risk for obesity with respect to EAH at 5 years of age. Research Methods and Procedures: This was an observational investigation of families enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Infant Growth Study. Five‐year‐old children born at high (N = 28) or low (N = 25) risk for obesity on the basis of maternal prepregnancy body weight were evaluated at a hospital‐based laboratory. Children consumed 11 snack foods ad libitum after consuming an ad libitum dinner and reporting fullness. Parents reported on snack foods at home and their own eating styles. Nutritive sucking at 3 months of age was evaluated by computerized apparatus. Results: EAH in high‐risk boys (mean ± standard error = 326 ± 66 kJ] was more than twice that of low‐risk boys (mean ± standard error = 151 ± 39 kJ), p = 0.03. Among girls, there was a trend for EAH to be associated with increased parental limitations on daughter snack food consumption at home (p = 0.06). EAH was unrelated to 3‐month sucking behavior. Discussion: Genes that promote childhood obesity may partially exert their influence through EAH, an effect that was limited to boys born at risk for obesity. The unique influences of genes and home environment on this trait should be disaggregated in subsequent studies.  相似文献

It is known that gender can affect susceptibility to development of various cardiomyopathies. However, it is unclear whether basic mechanical contractile function of the myocardium differs between genders, whether they respond differently to stressors, or both. To test for a possible gender factor, contractile parameters of healthy, isolated myocardium were investigated under near physiological conditions. Right ventricular ultra-thin trabeculae from young adult LBN-f1 rats were electrically stimulated to isometrically contract at 37°C. No differences were found in developed force or kinetic parameters. In each muscle, the force-frequency relationship was measured at 4, 6, and 8 Hz, encompassing most of the in vivo range. Again, no differences were observed in force-frequency behavior; developed force rose from 21.6 ± 4.0 at 4 Hz to 30.3 ± 5.8 mN/mm2 at 8 Hz in females and from 23.4 ± 3.4 to 29.8 ± 3.4 mN/mm2 in males. The response to β-adrenergic stimulation was similar; at 1 μM isoproterenol, developed force increased to 34.5 ± 6.2 mN/mm2 in females and 32.3 ± 3.2 mN/mm2 in males (female vs. male, not significant). We conclude that basic mechanical performance of healthy isolated myocardium under physiological conditions is not different between males and females, and a different response to stress must underlie gender-based differences in cardiac performance.  相似文献

In pig production, piglets are tail docked at birth in order to prevent tail biting later in life. In order to examine the effects of tail docking and docking length on the formation of neuromas, we used 65 pigs and the following four treatments: intact tails (n=18); leaving 75% (n=17); leaving 50% (n=19); or leaving 25% (n=11) of the tail length on the pigs. The piglets were docked between day 2 and 4 after birth using a gas-heated apparatus, and were kept under conventional conditions until slaughter at 22 weeks of age, where tails were removed and examined macroscopically and histologically. The tail lengths and diameters differed at slaughter (lengths: 30.6±0.6; 24.9±0.4; 19.8±0.6; 8.7±0.6 cm; P<0.001; tail diameter: 0.5±0.03; 0.8±0.02; 1.0±0.03; 1.4±0.04 cm; P<0.001, respectively). Docking resulted in a higher proportion of tails with neuromas (64 v. 0%; P<0.001), number of neuromas per tail (1.0±0.2 v. 0; P<0.001) and size of neuromas (1023±592 v. 0 μm; P<0.001). The results show that tail docking piglets using hot-iron cautery causes formation of neuromas in the outermost part of the tail tip. The presence of neuromas might lead to altered nociceptive thresholds, which need to be confirmed in future studies.  相似文献

It is difficult to separate an age-dependent fall in nitrogen use efficiency (NUE; N balance/N intake) in growing ruminants from a progressively decrease in animal protein requirements over time. This study examined the effect of dietary protein content on N partitioning, digestibility and N isotopic discrimination between the animal and its diet (Δ15Nanimal-diet) evaluated at two different fattening periods (early v. late). Twenty-four male Romane lambs (age: 19 ± 4.0 days; BW: 8.3 ± 1.39 kg) were equally allocated to three dietary CP treatments (15%, 17% and 20% CP on a DM basis). Lambs were reared with their mothers until weaning, thereafter housed in individual pens until slaughter (45 kg BW). During the post-weaning period, lambs were allocated twice (early fattening (30 days post-weaning) and late fattening (60 days post-weaning)) to metabolic cages for digestibility and N balance study. When diet CP content increased, the average daily gain of lambs increased (P < 0.05) while the age at slaughter decreased (P = 0.01), but no effect was observed on feed efficiency (P > 0.10). Diet CP content had limited effect on lamb carcass traits. Higher fibre digestibility was observed at the early v. late fattening period (P < 0.001). The N intake and the urinary N excretion increased when diet CP content increased (P < 0.001) and when shifting from early to late fattening period (P < 0.001). Faecal N excretion (P = 0.14) and N balance (P > 0.10) were not affected by diet CP content. Nitrogen digestibility increased (P < 0.001) as the diet CP content increased and on average it was greater at late v. early fattening period (P = 0.02). The NUE decreased (P = 0.001) as the diet CP content increased and as the lamb became older (P < 0.001). However, the age-dependent fall in NUE observed was lower at high v. low dietary CP content (CP × age interaction; P = 0.04). The Δ15Nanimal-diet was positively correlated (P < 0.05) with N intake (r = 0.59), excretion of faecal N (r = 0.41), urinary N (r = 0.69) and total manure N (r = 0.64), while negatively correlated with NUE (r = −0.57). Overall, the experiment showed NUE was lower in older lambs and when lambs were fed high diet CP content, and that Δ15Nanimal-diet was a useful indicator not only for NUE but also for urinary N excretion, which is a major environmental pollution factor on farm.  相似文献

The functional state in wheelchair basketball players with damage to the vertebral column in the area of T 6-T 10 and paraplegia was studied. The subjects were 26.6 ± 1.7 years old on average (n = 9). Control subjects were disabled persons who led an active life, with a mean age of 44.5 ± 2.6 years (n = 13), athletes with a mean age of 24.6 ± 1.3 years (n = 14), and healthy physically active men with a mean age of 24.9 ± 0.6 years (n = 15). In wheelchair athletes, the body length in the sitting posture, the respiratory volume, and the performance of respiratory tests were increased. These changes in the musculoskeletal apparatus and the systems providing autonomic regulation of motor activity may be regarded as adaptive modifications due to physical training. In the cardiovascular system of para-athletes and its autonomic regulation, attenuation of an increase in the diastolic arterial pressure value induced by injury and an elevation of sensitivity of arterial baroreflex, which had been decreased due to damage to the vertebral column, were observed. These data indicate compensatory processes adjusting the functioning of the cardiovascular system via the mechanisms of baroreflex regulation.  相似文献

The prevalence of sustaining a fall is particularly high in children. Deficits in postural control and muscle strength are important intrinsic fall risk factors. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of balance training (BT) followed by detraining on postural control, plantar flexor strength, and jumping height in prepubertal children. Thirty grade 1 school children participated in this study and were assigned to either an intervention class (INT, n = 15, age 6.7 ± 0.5 years) or a control class (n = 15, age 6.6 ± 0.5 years). The INT participated in 4 weeks of BT (3 per week) integrated in their physical education lessons. Pre, post, and follow-up tests included the measurements of postural sway on a balance platform, maximal torque and rate of force development of the plantar flexors on an isokinetic device, and jumping height on a force platform. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. Balance training resulted in tendencies in terms of small to medium interaction effects yet not statistically significant improvements in postural sway (f = 0.14; p > 0.05), force production of the plantar flexors (f = 0.18; p> 0.05), and jumping height (f = 0.25; p> 0.05). Immaturity of the postural control system and deficits in attentional focus during practice of balance exercises could be responsible for the nonsignificant findings in this study. The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of prolonged vibration on the force fluctuations during a force-matching task performed at low-force levels. Fourteen young healthy men performed a submaximal force-matching task of isometric plantar flexion before and after Achilles tendon vibration (n = 8, vibration subjects) or lying without vibration (n = 6, control subjects) for 30 min. The target forces were 2.5-10% of the previbration maximal voluntary contraction force. The standard deviation of force decreased by a mean of 29 +/- 20% across target forces after vibration, whereas it did not decrease significantly in control subjects (-5 +/- 12%). This change was significantly greater compared with control subjects (P < 0.01 for both). The reproductive characteristics of Chinese Hu sheep are reviewed. Male and female lambs reached puberty at a mean age of 120 days and 180 days, respectively, with an average body weight of 18.54 ± 1.48 kg (n = 31) and 22.75 ± 1.98 kg (n = 24). Adult male and female sheep reproduced throughout the year. On average, ewes lambed 1.65 times per year (n = 1482). The mean ovulation rate of adult ewes was over 2.2 (n = 46). The average litter size of 150863 ewes raised under extensive conditions was 2.06. The early sexual maturity of male and female lambs was respectively related to high concentrations of testosterone and 17β-E2 in blood plasma in the earlier postnatal period.
