In area, New Caledonia is the smallest of the world’s 25 official biodiversity hotspots, but in many taxonomic groups, the island has the highest concentration of species on earth, particularly so in the freshwater insect order Trichoptera. This study aims at applying molecular data and morphology for estimating the real species diversity of the genus Agmina on New Caledonia and investigating potential effects of ultramafic rock substrate on diversification. A dated molecular phylogeny was applied to study diversity and diversification related to geological substrate using the dispersal–extinction–cladogenesis model, diva and Bayesian ancestral character reconstruction. More than 47 species (> 63%) were unknown to science. Initial radiation occurred on ultramafic substrate followed by several independent dispersal events to nonultramafic substrate. The rate of shift from ultramafic to nonultramafic substrate was significantly higher than the rate of shift in the opposite direction, indicating a possible cost associated with living on ultramafic substrate.  相似文献

New Caledonia is a tropical hotspot of biodiversity with high rates of regional and local endemism. Despite offering an ideal setting to study the evolution of endemism, New Caledonia has received little attention compared with the other nearby hotspots, particularly New Zealand. Most studies of the Neocaledonian endemism have been carried out at the regional level, comparing the various groups and species present in New Caledonia but absent in neighboring territories. In addition, remarkably high short‐range endemism has been documented among plants, lizard and invertebrates, although these have usually been done, lacking a phylogenetic perspective. Most studies of Neocaledonian endemism have referred to the geological Gondwanan antiquity of the island and its metalliferous soils derived from ultramafic rocks. Very old clades are thought to have been maintained in refugia and diversified on the metalliferous soils. The present study documents the pattern of diversification and establishment of short‐range endemism in a phylogenetic context using the Neocaledonian cockroach genus Lauraesilpha. Mitochondrial and nuclear genes were sequenced to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships among the species of this genus. These relationships, in the light of the species distribution, do not support the hypothesis that species diversified via an adaptive radiation on metalliferous soils and are not consistent with areas of highest rainfall. Species of Lauraesilpha have similar altitudinal ranges and ecological habits and are short‐range endemics on mountains. What our analysis did reveal was that closely related species are found on nearby or contiguous mountains, and thus these formations probably played the key role establishing short‐range endemism (in association with recent climatic changes). © The Willi Hennig Society 2008.  相似文献

The grasshopper genus Caledonula, endemic to New Caledonia, was studied to understand the evolution of species distributions in relation to climate and soil types. Based on a comprehensive sampling of 80 locations throughout the island, the genus was represented by five species, four of which are new to science, of which three are described here. All the species have limited distributions in New Caledonia. Bioclimatic niche modelling shows that all the species were found in association with a wet climate and reduced seasonality, explaining their restriction to the southern half of the island. The results suggest that the genus was ancestrally constrained by seasonality. A molecular phylogeny was reconstructed using two mitochondrial and two nuclear markers. The partially resolved tree showed monophyly of the species found on metalliferous soils, and molecular dating indicated a rather recent origin for the genus. Adaptation to metalliferous soils is suggested by both morphological changes and radiation on these soils. The genus Caledonula is therefore a good model to understand the origin of microendemism in the context of recent and mixed influences of climate and soil type.  相似文献

Pycnandra (Sapotaceae), the largest endemic genus in New Caledonia, comprises 66 species classified in six subgenera. We tested phylogenetic relationships and a proposed infrageneric classification by sampling 60 species for sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA (ETS, ITS, RPB2) and plastid DNA (trnH–psbA) and nine morphological characters. Data were analysed with Bayesian inference, parsimony jackknifing and lineage through time. We recovered a phylogenetic tree supporting the recognition of six proposed subgenera (Achradotypus, Leptostylis, Pycnandra, Sebertia, Trouettia and Wagapensia). Because a subgeneric classification is used, the nomenclature will be stable when the members are transferred to Pycnandra. Morphological traits were optimized in the BEAST analysis, adding evidence to earlier work that morphology has limited value for successfully diagnosing groups in Sapotaceae. We confirm a previously suspected case of cryptic species that exhibit the same morphological features and require the same abiotic conditions, but are distantly related in the phylogenetic tree. We detected two possible new cases of cryptic sibling species that might warrant recognition. A slowdown in speciation rate in several genera has been suggested as evidence that New Caledonia was once submerged after rifting from Australia. Plotting lineages through time reveals two important intervals at 7.5–8.6 Ma and present to 1.5 Ma, when net molecular diversification within the genus was zero. This indicates that the genus presently has reached a dynamic equilibrium, providing additional evidence that New Caledonia is an old Darwinian island, being submerged during the Eocene and colonized after re‐emergence c. 37 Ma. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 179 , 57–77.  相似文献

A new genus and species of the Hatschekiidae, Laminohatschekia synaphobranchi, is described from an eel caught off New Caledonia. It is characterised by its long ribbon-like trunk and by the possession of three pairs of biramous legs. The pennellid Sarcotretes scopeli is redescribed from a macrourid also taken off New Caledonia. Sarcotretes lobatus is recognised as a synonym of S. scopeli. Phrixocephalus carcellesi is described in detail for the first time, from the stomach contents of a King Shag caught in the Falkland Islands. A wide range of individual variability in holdfast structure was noted in P. carcellesi. A new species, Peniculisa bellwoodi, is described from Pomacentrus amboiensis collected at Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef. The sphyriid Lophoura cornuta is redescribed from a synaphobranchid eel caught off New Caledonia and both sexes of a lernanthropid, Aethon morelandi, are redescribed from Nemadactylus macropterus in southern Australia.  相似文献

The taxonomic position of an actinomycete isolated from an ultramafic soil in New Caledonia was examined using a polyphasic approach. The organism, which was designated SFOCin 76, was found to have chemical and morphological properties typical of streptomycetes and formed a distinct phyletic line in the Streptomyces violaceusniger clade of the 16S rDNA tree. It also showed a unique pattern of phenotypic properties that distinguished it from representatives of all of the validly described species classified in this clade. It is, therefore, proposed that strain SFOCin 76 be classified in the genus Streptomyces as Streptomyces yatensis sp. nov. Aims

Data on the variability of hyperaccumulation potential of the facultative serpentinophytes Noccaea kovatsii and N. praecox on different geological substrates are scarce. The aim of this study was to assess the accumulation potential of these two species from ultramafic and non-ultramafic substrates, with special emphasis on the hyperaccumulation of Ni, Zn and Cd.

Methods

Samples of plants and corresponding soils were collected from 16 sites covering a wide range of geochemistry. Elemental concentrations were determined in the roots, shoots and the rhizosphere soils. The pH, particle size distribution and content of organic matter were also determined in the soil samples.

Results

All ultramafic accessions of both species hyperaccumulated Ni with high intraspecific variability. Only one accession of N. kovatsii from a schist soil hyperaccumulated Zn, with also a high Cd accumulation. Accumulation and translocation of Ni in both species were much higher in the ultramafic accessions, whereas Zn accumulation and translocation was found in both ultramafic and non-ultramafic accessions.

Conclusions

Ni accumulation and translocation was restricted to ultramafic populations of both species, whereas it is a species-wide trait for Zn. This study provides new and comprehensive information on the natural variation of hyperaccumulation of Ni, Zn and Cd in N. kovatsii and N. praecox.

A new species in the previously monotypic, endemic New Caledonian genus Gastrolepis (Stemonuraceae) is described. Gastrolepis alticola differs from G. austrocaledonica by its shorter and thicker petioles, strongly coriaceous leaves with revolute margins, shorter inflorescences, and pubescent corollas. The new species is further distinguished by its ecology, occurring only in high‐altitude maquis on two massifs in southern New Caledonia, Mt. Kouakoué and the Montagne des Sources. Gastrolepis alticola is assigned a preliminary conservation status of ‘Endangered’ using the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List criteria. Comparison of the IUCN threat status for the 19 species endemic to this distinctive, restricted vegetation type reveals a striking lack of consistency and underscores the need for a reassessment of the entire New Caledonian flora. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 157 , 775–783.  相似文献

Halimeda is a genus of calcified and segmented green macroalgae in the order Bryopsidales. In New Caledonia, the genus is abundant and represents an important part of the reef flora. Previous studies recorded 19 species that were identified using morphological criteria. The aim of this work was to reassess the diversity of the genus in New Caledonia using morpho‐anatomical examinations and molecular analyses of the plastid tufA and rbcL genes. Our results suggest the occurrence of 22 species. Three of these are reported for the first time from New Caledonia: Halimeda kanaloana, H. xishaensis, and an entity resembling H. stuposa. DNA analyses revealed that the species H. fragilis exhibits cryptic or pseudocryptic diversity in New Caledonia. We aimed to clarify phylogenetic relationships within the pantropical genus Diospyros (Ebenaceae sensu lato), and ascertain biogeographical patterns in the New Caledonian endemic species. We used DNA sequences from eight plastid regions (rbcL, atpB, matK, ndhF, trnK intron, trnL intron, trnL-trnF spacer, and trnS-trnG spacer) and included 149 accessions representing 119 Diospyros species in our analysis. Results from this study confirmed the monophyly of Diospyros with good support and provided a clearer picture of the relationships within the genus than in previous studies. Evidence from phylogenetic analyses suggests that Diospyros colonized New Caledonia multiple times. The four lineages of Diospyros in New Caledonia also differ in their degree of diversification. The molecular data indicate that one lineage is paleoendemic and derived from an ancient Australian species. The other three lineages are more closely related to several Southeast Asian species; two of them are neoendemics, and one has radiated rapidly and recently.  相似文献

New Caledonia is well known for its rich and unique flora. Many studies have focused on the biogeographical origins of New Caledonian plants but rates of diversification on the island have scarcely been investigated. Here, dated phylogenetic trees from selected published studies were used to evaluate the time and tempo of diversification in New Caledonia. The 12 plant lineages investigated all appear to have colonized the island < 37 Mya, when New Caledonia re‐emerged after a period of inundation, and the timing of these arrivals is spread across the second half of the Cenozoic. Diversification rates are not particularly high and are negatively correlated with lineage age. The palms have the fastest diversification rates and also the most recent arrival times. The lineage ages of rainforest plants suggest that this ecosystem has been present for at least 6.9 Myr. The New Caledonian flora is apparently a relatively old community that may have reached a dynamic equilibrium. Colonization by new immigrants has been possible until relatively recently and diversity‐dependent processes may still be affecting the diversification rates of the earlier colonizers. The present paper documents the morphology and systematic positions of three new oligotrich ciliates, P arallelostrombidium obesum sp. nov. , P arallelostrombidium ellipticum sp. nov. , and S trombidium tropicum sp. nov. , which were sampled from habitats with different salinities in southern China. P arallelostrombidium obesum sp. nov. is characterized by a fat body and the posterior portions of the girdle and ventral kineties extending transversely on the dorsal side. P arallelostrombidium ellipticum sp. nov. is recognizable by the anterior ends of the girdle and ventral kineties being close to each other and the posterior ends of the girdle and ventral kineties intersecting on the dorsal side. S trombidium tropicum sp. nov. is distinguished by a ventrally opened girdle kinety that is slightly spiralled with the right end shifted posteriad. Small subunit rRNA gene trees show that P . obesum sp. nov. and P . ellipticum sp. nov. fall into a mixed group composed of Parallelostrombidium and some Novistrombidium species, and that S . tropicum sp. nov. branches at the base of the clade containing non‐Strombidium species. The relationships of Parallelostrombidium species and that of Strombidium species are both not resolved considering their low support values in our phylogenetic analysis. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

The tropical Far East has many outcrops of ultramafic rock including very large areas in Sulawesi (c. 8000 km2) and New Caledonia (c. 5500 km2). The outcrops occur under several different climates, and give rise to a range of soils, the characteristics of which are reviewed. The vegetation on them is very varied. Under the same climate one can find grassland, scrub, and both short and tall rain forests. The variation in species richness on the ultramafics is difficult to explain. The degree of endemism varies too; it is probably less dependent on soil characteristics than on historical factors. The causes of the various unusual types of vegetation on ultramafic outcrops are discussed. It is possible that the somewhat dwarfed forests result from a shortage of one or more major nutrients or from very high soil Mg/Ca quotients or high Ni concentrations. The distinct ‘maquis’ vegetation of New Caledonia, and probably ultramafic scrub elsewhere, has evolved in relation to not only the soil chemical factors just listed but also periodic fire and varying degrees of drought. Fires are certainly more important than was once thought and the adverse soil factors may have a role in delaying recolonisation. The plant chemistry is notable for the presence of species which hyperaccumulate certain elements, notably Ni. This phenomenon is discussed in relation to its ecological importance, which may be protection of the hyperaccumulators against herbivores. The need for a conservation policy for the ultramafic areas is stressed, and mention is made of the restoration work on sites damaged by nickel mining in New Caledonia.  相似文献

The diversity of the Frankia strains that are naturally in symbiosis with plants belonging to the Gymnostoma genus in New Caledonia was investigated. A direct molecular characterization of DNA extracted from nodules was performed, followed by characterization by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the ribosomal rrs-rrl (16S-23S) intergenic spacer (IGS) polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified region. Seventeen different patterns were identified among the 358 microsymbiotic strains studied in the eight species of host plant present in New Caledonia. This genotypical approach permitted us to show that a large diversity existed among the patterns and that these did not exhibit a strict specificity to any host-plant species comparable with that previously found in the Casuarina and Allocasuarina symbioses in Australia. Despite this lack of specificity, a correspondence analysis nevertheless showed that the distribution of these patterns was related to soil type and to host-plant species. Furthermore, several Frankia strains were exclusively associated with the ultramafic soils.  相似文献

We reconstructed the evolutionary history of Codia , a plant genus endemic to the New Caledonia biodiversity hotspot in the southwest Pacific, using three single-copy nuclear genes. It seems likely that more than half of Codia species have a hybrid origin, but in the absence of cytological information, it is not known whether polyploids occur. Adaptation to ultramafic soils is possibly a plesiomorphic character for the entire genus. We found that species of hybrid origin can have some morphological characters absent in putative parental species, that is, they exhibit transgressive phenotypes. There is evidence of considerable range alteration post-origin in several species because some likely parental species of hybrid taxa no longer co-occur and are confined to putative rainforest refugia; in some cases, hybrid species do not now co-occur with either of their parental species. These results have implications for the design of conservation strategies, for example, prioritization of parental species for ex-situ conservation and preservation of the contact zones between soil types where hybridization is more likely to occur (i.e. conserving the possibility for the process to continue rather than trying to conserve taxa).  相似文献

Few studies have focused on the early colonization of New Caledonia by insects, after the re-emergence of the main island, 37 Myr ago. Here we investigate the mode and tempo of evolution of a new endemic cricket genus, Pixibinthus, recently discovered in southern New Caledonia. First we formally describe this new monotypic genus found exclusively in the open shrubby vegetation on metalliferous soils, named ‘maquis minier’, unique to New Caledonia. We then reconstruct a dated molecular phylogeny based on five mitochondrial and four nuclear loci in order to establish relationships of Pixibinthus within Eneopterinae crickets. Pixibinthus is recovered as thesister clade of the endemic genus Agnotecous, mostly rainforest-dwellers. Dating results show that the island colonization by their common ancestor occurred around 34.7 Myr, shortly after New Caledonia re-emergence. Pixibinthus and Agnotecous are then one of the oldest insect lineages documented so far for New Caledonia. This discovery highlights for the first time two clear-cut ecological specializations between sister clades, as Agnotecous is mainly found in rainforests with 19 species, whereas Pixibinthus is found in open habitats with a single documented species. The preference of Pixibinthus for open habitats and of Agnotecous for forest habitats nicely fits an acoustic specialization, either explained by differences in body size or in acoustic properties of their respective habitats. We hypothesize that landscape dynamics, linked to major past climatic events and recent change in fire regimes are possible causes for both present-day low diversity and rarity in genus Pixibinthus. The unique evolutionary history of this old New Caledonian lineage stresses the importance to increase our knowledge on the faunal biodiversity of ‘maquis minier’, in order to better understand the origin and past dynamics of New Caledonian biota.  相似文献

Kosteletzkya s.s. is a genus of 17 species (excluding the endemic species of Madagascar), found in the New World, continental Africa, Madagascar, and Southeast Asia. Recent chromosome counts revealed diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid species. To estimate the history of the genus, we sequenced nuclear and plastid loci for nearly all Kosteletzkya spp., in the majority of cases, with multiple accessions per species. The African species form a paraphyletic grade relative to a New World clade. Polyploidy has occurred only in some African species, resulting in the relatively ancient formation of one putative autotetraploid species (K. semota), one recent allotetraploid species (K. borkouana), two relatively ancient allotetraploid species (K. begoniifolia and K. rotundalata) and one recent allohexaploid species (K. racemosa). Our inferences regarding the hypothesized parentage of the polyploids mostly corroborate previous work based on chromosome‐pairing patterns in artificial hybrids, highlighting the utility of these complementary data sources. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 179 , 421–435.  相似文献

A new species of Nepenthes L., N. attenboroughii (Nepenthaceae), from Palawan Island in the Philippines, is described and illustrated. It is restricted to rocky, ultramafic soils that comprise the summit region of Mount Victoria, Municipality of Narra, where it occurs in isolation from other members of the genus. On the basis of the morphological features, this new taxon appears to be related to both N. mira Jebb & Cheek of Palawan and N. rajah Hook.f. of Borneo. Its substantial size places it among the largest of known pitcher plants.
