Evidence suggests that a low‐glycemic index (LGI) diet has a satiating effect and thus may enhance weight maintenance following weight loss. This study was conducted at Hammersmith Hospital, London, UK, and assessed the effect of altering diet GI on weight‐loss maintenance. It consisted of a weight‐loss phase and a 4‐month randomized weight maintenance phase. Subjects were seen monthly to assess dietary compliance and anthropometrics. Appetite was assessed bimonthly by visual analogue scales while meal challenge postprandial insulin and glucose concentrations were assessed before and after the intervention. Following a median weight loss of 6.1 (interquartile range: 5.2–7.1) % body weight, subjects were randomized to a high‐glycemic index (HGI) (n = 19) or LGI (n = 23) diet. Dietary composition differed only in GI (HGI group: 63.7 ± 9.4; LGI group: 49.7 ± 5.7, P < 0.001) and glycemic load (HGI group: 136.8 ± 56.3; LGI group: 89.7 ± 27.5, P < 0.001). Groups did not differ in body weight (weight change over 4 months, HGI group: 0.3 ± 1.9 kg; LGI group: −0.7 ± 2.9 kg, P = 0.3) or other anthropometric measurements. This pilot study suggests that in the setting of healthy eating, changing the diet GI does not appear to significantly affect weight maintenance. 相似文献

Objective
Different types of carbohydrates have diverse glycemic response, thus glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) are used to assess this variation. The impact of dietary GI and GL in all-cause mortality is unknown. The objective of this study was to estimate the association between dietary GI and GL and risk of all-cause mortality in the PREDIMED study.Material and Methods
The PREDIMED study is a randomized nutritional intervention trial for primary cardiovascular prevention based on community-dwelling men and women at high risk of cardiovascular disease. Dietary information was collected at baseline and yearly using a validated 137-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). We assigned GI values of each item by a 5-step methodology, using the International Tables of GI and GL Values. Deaths were ascertained through contact with families and general practitioners, review of medical records and consultation of the National Death Index. Cox regression models were used to estimate multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and their 95% CI for mortality, according to quartiles of energy-adjusted dietary GI/GL. To assess repeated measures of exposure, we updated GI and GL intakes from the yearly FFQs and used Cox models with time-dependent exposures.Results
We followed 3,583 non-diabetic subjects (4.7 years of follow-up, 123 deaths). As compared to participants in the lowest quartile of baseline dietary GI, those in the highest quartile showed an increased risk of all-cause mortality [HR = 2.15 (95% CI: 1.15–4.04); P for trend = 0.012]. In the repeated-measures analyses using as exposure the yearly updated information on GI, we observed a similar association. Dietary GL was associated with all-cause mortality only when subjects were younger than 75 years.Conclusions
High dietary GI was positively associated with all-cause mortality in elderly population at high cardiovascular risk. 相似文献4.

本实验研究了饲料中添加乌贼肝粉和鱼浆蛋白对中华鳖抗氧化能力的影响。设计了3个实验组,对照组(白鱼粉组)、乌贼肝粉组和鱼浆蛋白组。3种实验饲料的营养成分相近,主要区别是乌贼肝粉组和鱼浆蛋白组的饲料中分别用乌贼肝粉和鱼浆蛋白取代了对照组饲料中5%的白鱼粉。用3种饲料分别养殖中华鳖(Pelodiscus sinensis)稚鳖8周,测定了稚鳖血清和肝组织的超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)活性、丙二醛含量(MDA)、总抗氧化能力(T-AOC)以及血清碱性磷酸酶(AKP)和溶菌酶(LZM)的活性。结果发现,乌贼肝粉组稚鳖血清和肝MDA含量显著低于对照组,T-AOC高于对照组;鱼浆蛋白组稚鳖血清和肝MDA含量、血清T-AOC与对照组没有显著差异,但肝T-AOC显著低于对照组。实验结果表明,饲料中添加5%的乌贼肝粉能提高稚鳖的抗氧化能力。 相似文献

We studied chlorophyll a (chl. a), biovolume and species composition of benthic algae and phytoplankton in the eutrophic lower River Spree in 1996. The chl. a concentration was estimated as 3.5 (2.7–4.5) µg/cm2 for epipsammon, 9.4 (7.4–11.9) µg/cm2 for epipelon and 6.7 (5.7–7.8) µg/cm2 for the epilithon (median and 95% C. L.). The mean total biomass of benthic algae was significantly higher (6.0 µg chl. a/cm2) than the areal chl. a content of the pelagic zone (1.6 µg chl. a/cm2). Although certain phytoplankton taxa were abundant in the periphyton, benthic taxa generally dominated the assemblages. Seasonal dynamics of benthic algae were probably controlled by light and nitrate supply (sand), discharge fluctuations (sand, mud) and invertebrate grazing (stones). 为了探明外源褪黑素对高温胁迫下猕猴桃幼苗耐热性的影响,以盆栽‘秦美’猕猴桃幼苗为材料,进行根灌褪黑素溶液和45℃高温胁迫处理,并测定相关抗逆生理指标。结果表明:(1)与高温对照相比,褪黑素预处理显著降低了猕猴桃幼苗叶片相对电导率和丙二醛含量,提高了脯氨酸含量以及过氧化氢酶和过氧化物酶活性,且褪黑素溶液浓度在100~200 μmol·L-1时效果较好。(2)褪黑素预处理显著增加了叶片中总酚、总黄酮和总黄烷醇含量,且幼苗的抗氧化能力(ABTS法、FRAP法和DPPH法)在胁迫过程中显著高于高温对照。研究认为,外源褪黑素可以通过提高植株体内抗氧化酶活性,非酶抗氧化物质如酚类物质和类黄酮物质含量以及渗透调节物质含量来增强植物的抗氧化能力,从而有效缓解高温对于猕猴桃幼苗的伤害,增强猕猴桃幼苗的耐热性。 相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effects of feed supplementation with equivalent doses of selenium from sodium selenite (SS) or selenized yeast (SY) on Se deposition, selenoenzyme activity and lipid peroxidation in tissues as well as in bacterial and protozoal fractions of rumen contents in sheep. The phagocytic activity of monocytes and neutrophils in whole blood was also assessed after 3 months of dietary treatment. While animals in the control group were fed with unsupplemented basal diet (BD) containing only background Se (0.16 mg/kg DM), the diet of the other two groups (n = 6) consisted of identical BD enriched with 0.4 mg Se/kg DM either from SS or SY. Concentrations of Se in blood and tissues were found to be significantly increased in both supplemented groups. No response in Se deposition was recorded in the musculus longissimus dorsi of sheep given dietary SS. The intake of SY resulted in a significantly higher Se level in the blood, kidney medulla, skeletal muscles, heart, intestinal and ruminal mucosa than in the case of SS supplementation. No differences appeared between tissue Se contents in the liver and kidney cortex due to the source of added Se. Regardless of source, Se supplementation to feeds significantly increased the glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in blood and tissues except the kidney medulla and jejunal mucosa. Supplementation with SY resulted in significantly higher activity of thioredoxin reductase in the liver and ileal mucosa, and also reduced malondialdehyde content in the liver and duodenal mucosa. Dietary Se intake increased Se concentrations in the total rumen contents and bacterial and protozoal fractions. The accumulation of Se in rumen microbiota was associated with increased GPx activity. Phagocytic cell activity was enhanced by Se supplementation. Our results indicate that Se from both sources has beneficial effects on antioxidant status in sheep and can be utilized by rumen microflora. 相似文献

Brassica vegetables possess high levels of antioxidant metabolites associated with beneficial health effects including vitamins, carotenoids, anthocyanins, soluble sugars and phenolics. Until now, no reports have been documented on the genetic basis of the antioxidant activity (AA) in Brassicas and the content of metabolites with AA like phenolics, anthocyanins and carotenoids. For this reason, this study aimed to: (1) study the relationship among different electron transfer (ET) methods for measuring AA, (2) study the relationship between these methods and phenolic, carotenoid and anthocyanin content, and (3) find QTLs of AA measured with ET assays and for phenolic, carotenoid and anthocyanin contents in leaves and flower buds in a DH population of B. oleracea as an early step in order to identify genes related to these traits. Low correlation coefficients among different methods for measuring AA suggest that it is necessary to employ more than one method at the same time. A total of 19 QTLs were detected for all traits. For AA methods, seven QTLs were found in leaves and six QTLs were found in flower buds. Meanwhile, for the content of metabolites with AA, two QTLs were found in leaves and four QTLs were found in flower buds. AA of the mapping population is related to phenolic compounds but also to carotenoid content. Three genomic regions determined variation for more than one ET method measuring AA. After the syntenic analysis with A. thaliana, several candidate genes related to phenylpropanoid biosynthesis are proposed for the QTLs found. 相似文献

The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary butyrate loaded clinoptilolite (CLI-B) on growth performance, pancreatic digestive enzymes, intestinal development and histomorphology, as well as antioxidant capacity of serum and intestinal mucosal in chickens. Two hundred forty 1-day-old commercial Arbor Acres broilers were randomly assigned to 4 groups: CON group (fed basal diets), SB group (fed basal diet with 0.05% sodium butyrate), CLI group (fed basal diet with 1% clinoptilolite), and CLI-B group (fed basal diet with 1% CLI-B). The results showed that supplementation of CLI-B significantly decreased (P < 0.05) feed conservation ratio at both 21 and 42 days of age, improved the pancreatic digestive enzymes activities (P < 0.05), increased the villus length and villus/crypt ratio (P < 0.05), and decreased the crypt depth of intestine (P < 0.05) as compared to the other experimental groups. Furthermore, the CLI-B environment improved the antioxidant capacity by increasing the antioxidant enzyme activities (P < 0.05) in intestine mucosal, and decreasing the NO content and iNOS activity (P < 0.05) in serum. In addition, CLI-B supplementation had improved the development of intestine and antioxidant capacity of broilers than supplementation with either clinoptilolite or butyrate sodium alone. In conclusion, 1% CLI-B supplementation improved the health status, intestine development and antioxidant capacity in broiler chickens, thus appearing as an important feed additive for the poultry industry. 相似文献

The continuously increasing usage of cell phones has raised concerns about the adverse effects of microwave radiation (MWR) emitted by cell phones on health. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have claimed that MWR may cause various kinds of damage in tissues. The aim of this study is to examine the possible effects of exposure to low‐intensity MWR on DNA and oxidative damage in the livers of rats. Eighteen Sprague–Dawley male rats were divided into three equal groups randomly (n = 6). Group 1 (Sham‐control): rats were kept under conditions the same as those of other groups, except for MWR exposure. Group 2: rats exposed to 1800 MHz (SAR: 0.62 W/kg) at 0.127 ± 0.04 mW/cm2 power density, and Group 3: rats exposed to 2,100 MHz (SAR: 0.2 W/kg) at 0.038 ± 0.03 mW/cm2 power density. Microwave application groups were exposed to MWR 2 h/day for 7 months. At the end of the exposure period, the rats were sacrificed and DNA damage, malondialdehyde (MDA), 8‐hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8‐OHdG), and total oxidant‐antioxidant parameter analyses were conducted in their liver tissue samples. It was found that 1800 and 2100 MHz low‐intensity MWR caused a significant increase in MDA, 8‐OHdG, total oxidant status, oxidative stress index, and comet assay tail intensity (P < 0.05), while total antioxidant status levels (P < 0.05) decreased. The results of our study showed that whole‐body exposure to 1800 and 2100 MHz low‐intensity MWR emitted by cell phones can induce oxidative stress by altering oxidant‐antioxidant parameters and lead to DNA strand breaks and oxidative DNA damage in the liver of rats. A relatively simple and widely applied method for quantitating the total antioxidant capacity of body fluids and drug solutions based on the absorbance of the ABTS radical cation was evaluated. In this assay, the end-point is an antioxidant-induced decrease in absorbance at a fixed time. This decrease is used as an index of total antioxidant capacity. It is shown that Trolox, potassium cyanide and quercetin all decrease the absorbance of ABTS radical cations at a fixed time, but by different mechanisms. Trolox scavenges the ABTS radical, potassium cyanide inhibits radical formation, while quercetin acts by both mechanisms. Using this method antioxidant capacity may be overestimated, due to both a scavenger effect and an effect on the rate of ABTS oxidation. To distinguish between these effects, a post-addition assay was used in which the sample is added when the formation of radicals is stable. Using post- addition assay conditions enables discrimination between effects on radical scavenging and on the radical formation, two major mechanisms for antioxidant action. In extrapolating the results to an ill vivo situation it should be questioned: (i) whether the peroxidase process does indeed mimic the process of radical formation in vivo, and (ii) whether the ABTS radicals do resemble the radical species involved in an in vivo situation. Results obtained in the ABTS radical-based methods should therefore be reviewed critically before the antioxidant capacity can be assessed. 相似文献

One of the main natural disturbances that affects the structure of rain forests is treefalls, frequently resulting in gaps. Tree‐fall gaps can bring drastic changes in environmental conditions compared with the undisturbed understory. We investigated the effect of tree‐fall gaps on fruit‐feeding butterfly (Nymphalidae) species assemblages in an undisturbed lowland rain forest in southeastern Peru. We used fruit‐baited traps suspended 2 m above ground in 15 tree‐fall gaps ranging in area from 100 to 1000 m2 and in adjacent undisturbed understory. Our data support the hypothesis that tree‐fall gap and understory habitats are utilized by different butterfly species assemblages. There were morphological differences between gap and understory species, where the understory species had a larger wing area to thoracic volume. Vegetation structure and composition were important factors affecting the butterfly assemblages. Most of the butterfly species showed an avoidance of vines and a strong association with the presence of trees and shrubs in gaps. There were also differences among gap assemblages that increased with gap size. Some of the species that were associated with gaps have been considered as canopy species. Other gap species in the present study, however, are known to feed on fruits and/or use host plants mainly, or only, occurring in gaps, implicating that the gap assemblage is a mix of canopy species and those unique to gaps. This indicates that, in an undisturbed Amazon forest, tree‐fall gaps may contribute to maintain species diversity by creating a mosaic of specific habitats and resources that favors different butterfly assemblages. 相似文献
