The hibernating habits of Citellus lateralis under standard laboratory conditions are described. It has been shown that it is possible to use a biopsy technique to investigate the brown fat tissues without serious disturbance to the hibernation pattern. This technique was used to sample brown and white fat tissues in the same animal at various seasons of the year. Histological studies did not reveal any changes in morphology or lipid composition which could be related purely to the hibernating season, however, during the short periods of arousal a large proportion of the brown fat cells appeared to be partially depleted of neutral fat. At this time a large increase in Luxol fast blue staining was always observed, which may be due to unmasking of tissue phosphatides.  相似文献

Summary The mitochondrial structure in the brown adipose cells of the golden mantled squirrel, Citellus lateralis, was examined throughout the year in biopsy samples. The mitochondria showed remarkable and apparently reversible changes in size and internal structure related to the physiologic activity of the animal. In the active animal the size of the largest mitochondria was 2.4 m × 1.5 m; during hibernation it increased to 7 m × 2.5 m; and during arousal it reached 11.2m × 5.3 m. The cristae of the mitochondria in the brown adipose cells of the animals in hibernation phase formed loops, whorls and mesh-like interconnections. During the arousal phase they underwent further configurational changes. The most remarkable structure was associated with mitochondria of most unusual proportions which by dissolution gave rise to a new generation. This was a common finding during arousal but did not occur in any other phase of the hibernation cycle. Experimental Coxsackie B-3 virus infection in Citellus lateralis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Coxsackie B-3 virus produces a mild infection which passes unnoticed in the non-hibernating Citellus lateralis. A severe infection occurs in the hibernating animal. The progress of infection in the hiberating animal is related to the number of arousal hours and quite independent of the number of infected days. Nevertheless, it has been shown that the low-temperature hibernation phase has a potentiating effect upon subsequent viral production. Infective virus has not been found in the inoculated brown fat pads during the hibernation phase but very high virus titers are recorded 48 hours after arousal. This results in an earlier viraemia and earlier and higher titers in other organs of the body. A similar effect is noted when virus is inoculated at the very beginning of the arousal phase. While most animals recover with subsequent antibody development, a few succumb. Antibody development is slow and related only to the number of arousal hours experienced. Particular note is made of the fact that an animal may successfully resume hibernation despite complete loss of the axillary brown fat pads.  相似文献

  • 2.2. Results indicate that the ground squirrel continues to exhibit a circannual cycle of body weight fluctuations despite the high temperature.
  • 3.3. Furthermore, although alternating periods of heterothermy-homothermy were not possible at 34 C, the body weight cycle did free run under this constant environmental condition, and thus demonstrates the true endogenous nature of the circannual rhythm.

In this study the effects of photoperiod and hibernation duration on the lifespan of Bombus terrestris queens were examined. Hibernation durations of 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 months were studied, as were photoperiods of 0 h light : 24 h dark (LD 0:24), LD 8:16, LD 16:8 and LD 24:0. The queens that hibernated for 2.5 months and were exposed to 1 week of LD 8:16 had the highest survival rate (89.3%); the lowest survival rate was found in queens that hibernated for 4.0 months and were reared at LD 24:0. Photoperiod and hibernation duration had significant effects on egg predation by founding queens, competition between queens and workers, and emergence of sexual queens. Hibernation durations of 2.5 and 3.0 months and a photoperiod of LD 8:16 resulted in a significantly longer lifespan of B. terrestris.  相似文献

1. Hibernating C. lateralis were exposed to lowered ambient temperatures in order to investigate the relationship between hibernation stress and the thermoregulatory responses of the animals. 2. The least hibernation-stress squirrels exhibited a passive decline in metabolic rate until their body temperatures stabilized close to microenvironmental temperature. 3. The most stressed individuals aroused from hibernation in response to the declining ambient temperatures. 4. Intermediately stressed animals demonstrated an initial passive decline in temperature; however, at various temperatures (0.3-6.8 degrees C), this group increased their metabolic rate but did not arouse from hibernation.  相似文献

Thyroid hormone concentrations in blood were elevated all through the hibernating season while thyroid gland showed morphological signs of high activity. To determine whether metabolic rate is suppressed in a temperature-independent fashion in the golden-mantled ground squirrel during steady state hibernation, we measured body temperature and metabolic rate in ground squirrels during hibernation at different T(a)'s. In addition, we attempted to determine whether heart rate, ventilation rate, and breathing patterns changed as a function of body temperature or metabolic rate. We found that metabolic rate changed with T(a) as it was raised from 5 degrees to 14 degrees C, which supports the theory that different species sustain falls in metabolic rate during hibernation in different ways. Heart rate and breathing pattern also changed with changing T(a), while breathing frequency did not. That the total breathing frequency did not correlate closely with oxygen consumption or body temperature, while the breathing pattern did, raises important questions regarding the mechanisms controlling ventilation during hibernation.  相似文献
