To facilitate future research in freshwater fish recruitment response to environmental flow delivery, size‐at‐age and growth models are presented for eight fish species occurring in south‐eastern Australia; three small‐bodied species and the juvenile 0+ age classes of five large‐bodied species. Otolith increments were used to estimate the daily age of golden perch Macquaria ambigua, bony bream Nematalosa erebi, common carp Cyprinus carpio; Murray cod Maccullochella peelii, freshwater eel‐tailed catfish Tandanus tandanus, Australian smelt Retropinna semoni, un‐specked hardyhead Craterocephalus stercusmuscarum fulvus and Murray–Darling rainbowfish Melanotaenia fluviatilis. Linear growth models provided the best fit for length‐at‐age data of juvenile 0+ age large‐bodied species; whereas von Bertalanffy growth functions provided the best fit to length‐at‐age data of small‐bodied species. The results provide novel baseline data for future research in this area.  相似文献

Hypoxia represents a growing threat to biodiversity in freshwater ecosystems. Here, aquatic surface respiration (ASR) and oxygen thresholds required for survival in freshwater and simulated blackwater are evaluated for four lowland river fishes native to the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB), Australia. Juvenile stages of predatory species including golden perch Macquaria ambigua, silver perch Bidyanus bidyanus, Murray cod Maccullochella peelii, and eel-tailed catfish Tandanus tandanus were exposed to experimental conditions of nitrogen-induced hypoxia in freshwater and hypoxic blackwater simulations using dried river red gum Eucalyptus camaldulensis leaf litter. Australia''s largest freshwater fish, M. peelii, was the most sensitive to hypoxia but given that we evaluated tolerances of juveniles (0.99±0.04 g; mean mass ±SE), the low tolerance of this species could not be attributed to its large maximum attainable body mass (>100,000 g). Concentrations of dissolved oxygen causing 50% mortality (LC50) in freshwater ranged from 0.25±0.06 mg l−1 in T. tandanus to 1.58±0.01 mg l−1 in M. peelii over 48 h at 25–26°C. Logistic models predicted that first mortalities may start at oxygen concentrations ranging from 2.4 mg l−1 to 3.1 mg l−1 in T. tandanus and M. peelii respectively within blackwater simulations. Aquatic surface respiration preceded mortality and this behaviour is documented here for the first time in juveniles of all four species. Despite the natural occurrence of hypoxia and blackwater events in lowland rivers of the MDB, juvenile stages of these large-bodied predators are vulnerable to mortality induced by low oxygen concentration and water chemistry changes associated with the decomposition of organic material. Given the extent of natural flow regime alteration and climate change predictions of rising temperatures and more severe drought and flooding, acute episodes of hypoxia may represent an underappreciated risk to riverine fish communities.  相似文献

1. The highly variable hydrology of dryland rivers has important implications for population dynamics in these systems. In western Queensland, fluctuations in sub‐population size are likely to lead to local bottlenecks and extinctions, increasing the need for connectivity and gene flow to maintain population viability. 2. Using microsatellite markers, we explored evidence for this metapopulation structure in two species of freshwater fish (Maquaria ambigua and Tandanus tandanus) and one crustacean (Macrobrachium australiense) in a sub‐catchment of the upper Murray–Darling Basin, Australia. 3. Overall, we found very weak genetic structure for all three species. Two species (M. ambigua and M. australiense) showed some significant genetic structure that did not correlate with geographic distance. However, decomposed pairwise regression analysis revealed evidence for intense genetic drift at the waterhole scale, suggesting that local bottlenecks are driving what little genetic structure does exist for these species. 4. The results identify the local impact of bottlenecks on genetic diversity, but highlight the importance of gene flow in maintaining population viability in these highly variable systems. As the impacts of bottlenecks are likely to be tempered by gene flow, it is suggested that the maintenance of connectivity is of paramount importance in this dryland system.  相似文献

Transitions between the marine and freshwater macrohabitat have occurred repeatedly in the evolution of teleost fishes. For example, ariid catfishes have moved from freshwater to marine environments, and vice versa. Opercles, a skeletal feature that has been shown to change during such transitions, were subjected to 2D geometric morphometric analyses in order to investigate evolutionary shape changes during habitat transition in ariid catfishes and to test the influence of habitat on shape changes. A mtDNA marker, which proved useful in previous studies, was used to verify species identities. It greatly improved the assignment of specimens to a species, which are difficult to assign by morphology alone. The application of a mtDNA marker confirmed the occurrence of Notarius biffi in Central America, South of El Salvador. Molecular identification together with principal component analysis (PCA) and further morphological inspection of neurocrania indicated the existence of a cryptic species within Bagre pinnimaculatus. Principal component (PC) scores of individual specimens clustered in morphospace by genus rather than by habitat. Strong phylogenetic structure was detected using a permutation test of PC scores of species means on a phylogenetic tree. Calculation of Pagel's λ suggested that opercle shape evolved according to a Brownian model of evolution. Yet canonical variate analysis (CVA) conducted on the habitat groups showed significant differences in opercle shapes among freshwater and marine species. Overall, opercle shape in tropical American Ariidae appears to be phylogenetically constrained. This verifies the application of opercle shape as a taxonomic tool for species identification in fossil ariid catfishes. At the same time, adaptation to freshwater habitats shows characteristic opercle shape trajectories in ariid catfishes, which might be used to detect habitat preferences in fossils.  相似文献

The Tandanicolinae is reviewed, redefined and considered a subfamily of the Fellodistomidae. The Monodhelminthinae Dollfus, 1937, Mehratrematinae Srivastava, 1939, Prosogonariinae Mehra, 1963 and Buckleytrematinae Yamaguti, 1971 are synonyms of the Tandanicolinae. Genera included in the Tandanicolinae are Tandanicola, Monodhelmis, Buckleytrema and Prosogonarium. Burnellus and Mehratrema are made new synonyms of Monodhelmis. The composition of each genus is reviewed. Monodhelmis arii Yamaguti, 1952, Mehratrema arii Gu & Shen, 1979, Mehratrema dollfusi Srivastava, 1939, Monodhelmis philippinensis Velasquez, 1961, Mehratrema polynemusinis Chauhan, 1943 and Mehratrema skrjabini Karyakarte, 1969 are considered synonyms of Monodhelmis torpedinis. Monodhelmis elongatus Bilqees, 1970 is considered a species inquirenda. Prosogonarium angelae n. sp. is described from Euristhmus lepturus from Moreton Bay, Queensland. It is distinguished by the number and distribution of the vitelline follicles and the extent of the caeca. New records are given for Monodhelmis torpedinis from Arius graeffei and E. lepturus, M. trichofurcata from Tandanus tandanus, and Buckleytrema indica from A. graeffei, all from southern Queensland. Buckleytrema indica is redescribed and B. postacetabulorchis is synonymised with that species. Relationships within the Tandanicolinae were considered by cladistic analysis.  相似文献

The epidermis of six ectosymbiontic Temnocephala species (T. axenos, T. chilensis, T. digitata, T. microdactyla and T. pignalberiae from freshwater crustaceans and T. iheringi from a mollusc) from Argentina examined using scanning electron microscopy revealed characters indicating their relationships with other members of the Platyhelminthes and with the congeneric Australian and New Zealand species. In all species, the whole surface is covered with microvilli and no locomotory cilia were observed. Aggregates of monociliated receptors are on the tentacles of all species and on the ventral surfaces of three. Furthermore, T. axenos and T. chilensis show other ciliated structures interpreted as collar receptors, such as those described for some turbellarian groups (e.g. Proseriata and Rhabdocoela). Two species (T. digitata and T. iheringi) show structures that are probably related to the duo-gland adhesive system.  相似文献

This study investigated the role of predators in preventing competitive exclusion among three closely related armoured catfishes (Callichthys callichthys, Hoplosternum littorale and H. thoracatum) that occur synthopically in multi-predator freshwater swamps of Suriname, South America. The potential impact of predation on armoured catfish was determined by combining laboratory measurements of predation rates on five early developmental stages of the armoured catfish H. thoracatum for 24 aquatic predators with field studies of the density of the predators in the swamps. The contribution of a particular predator to the total predation pressure on its prey was determined to a large extent by the density of the predator in the swamp. Seemingly innocuous predators with low or moderate predation rates in the laboratory may be extremely important in the swamps due to their high abundance. Small-sized omnivorous fishes and aquatic invertebrates were major predators of early developmental stages of armoured catfish. Both qualitative and quantitative ontogenetic changes in the predation pressure on armoured catfish were observed. Major predation on eggs, larvae and juveniles of H. thoracatum resulted from a different set of predators in each developmental stage of the prey. In all developmental stages of H. thoracatum the predation pressure involved several predator species and not a single, dominant predator. The potential predation pressure of the 24 predators taken together and the number of predators that were able to prey on H. thoracatum decreased sharply with increasing age (size) of the prey. Even if egg (nest) predation is prevented by the guarding male, the potential impact of the 24 predators on the populations of armoured catfish is large. Predation may account for the high mortality of H. thoracatum observed in the swamps. The high predation pressure on callichthyid catfishes may help to explain the coexistence of three closely related and morphologically quite similar armoured catfishes in Surinamese swamps.  相似文献

Restriction-fragment length polymorphisms in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were used to evaluate population-genetic structure and matriarchal phylogeny in four species of marine fishes that lack a pelagic larval stage: the catfishes Arius felis and Bagre marinus, and the toadfishes Opsanus tau and O. beta. Thirteen informative restriction enzymes were used to assay mtDNAs from 134 specimens collected from Massachusetts to Louisiana. Considerable genotypic diversity was observed in each species. However, major mtDNA phylogenetic assemblages in catfish and toadfish (as identified in Wagner networks and UPGMA phenograms) exhibited contrasting patterns of geographic distribution: in catfish, distinct mtDNA clades were widespread, while such clades in toadfish tended to be geographically localized. By both the criteria of species' ranges and the geographic pattern of intraspecific mtDNA phylogeny, populations of marine catfish in the western Atlantic have had greater historical interconnectedness than have toadfish. Results are also compared to previously published mtDNA data in freshwater and other marine fishes. Although mtDNA differentiation among conspecific populations of continuously distributed marine fishes is usually lower than that among discontinuously distributed freshwater species inhabiting separate drainages, it is apparent that historical biogeographic factors can importantly influence genetic structure in marine as well as freshwater species.  相似文献

There are at least 40,000 species of microalgae in the aquatic environment. Fifteen species of marine dinoflagellates and freshwater cyanobacteria are known to produce paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) and represent a threat to human and/or livestock health. Although known toxic species are regularly monitored, the wider cross‐section of microalgae has not been systematically tested for PSTs. Advances in rapid screening techniques have resulted in the development of highly sensitive and specific methods to detect PSTs, including the sodium channel and saxiphilin binding assays. These assays were used in this study in 96‐well formats to screen 234 highly diverse isolates of Australian freshwater and marine microalgae for PSTs. The screening assays detected five toxic species, representing one freshwater cyanobacterium (Anabaena circinalis Rabenhorst) and four species of marine dinoflagellates (Alexandrium minutum Halim, A. catenella Balech, A. tamarense Balech, and Gymnodinium catenatum Graham). Liquid chromatography‐fluorescence detection was used to identify 14 saxitoxin analogues across the five species, and each species exhibited distinct toxin profiles. These results indicate that PST production is restricted to a narrow range of microalgal species found in Australian waters.  相似文献

Nine microsatellite DNA loci for the Australian broad-shelled freshwater turtle (Chelodina expansa) are presented. Markers were tailed with 20-mer oligonucleotides for use in four-colour fluorescent multiplex PCRs. The markers show high allelic richness (mean NA = 10.9, range 2–38) and expected heretozygosity (mean HE = 0.643; range 0.161–0.963) indicating that they will be valuable for population genetics studies in C. expansa. Cross-species amplification in three Australian freshwater turtle species further highlights the potential utility of these markers, particularly in the side-neck species C. longicollis and C. rugosa.  相似文献

Anthropogenic alterations to river flow regimes threaten freshwater biodiversity globally, with potentially disproportionate impacts on species that rely on flow cues to trigger critical life history processes, such as migration for diadromous fishes. This study investigates the influence of river discharge on the abundance of juvenile fish moving into rivers by four temperate catadromous or amphidromous species (common galaxias Galaxias maculatus, spotted galaxias Galaxias truttaceus, climbing galaxias Galaxias brevipinnis and the threatened Australian grayling Prototroctes maraena). Fyke netting or fishway trapping was used to catch juvenile fish moving from estuaries into freshwater in five coastal waterways in south-eastern Australia during the spring migratory period. There was a positive relationship between the probability of high catch rates and mean discharge in September. We also found a positive relationship between discharge and the number of recruits captured 22–30 days later in a flow stressed system. In addition, day-of-year had a strong influence on catch rates, with the peak abundance of juveniles for three species most likely to occur midway through the sampling period (spotted galaxias in October, climbing galaxias in late October and Australian grayling in late October and early November). Our study shows that higher magnitudes of river discharge were associated with increased catches of juvenile catadromous and amphidromous fishes. With a limited supply of environmental water, environmental flows used to enhance immigration of these fishes may be best targeted to maintain small amounts of immigration into freshwater populations in waterways or years when discharges are low and stable. When there are natural, large discharge volumes, relatively large numbers of juvenile fish can be expected to enter coastal waterways and during these times environmental flows may not be required to promote immigration.  相似文献

Squeaker catfishes (Pisces, Mochokidae, Synodontis) are widely distributed throughout Africa and inhabit a biogeographic range similar to that of the exceptionally diverse cichlid fishes, including the three East African Great Lakes and their surrounding rivers. Since squeaker catfishes also prefer the same types of habitats as many of the cichlid species, we hypothesized that the East African Synodontis species provide an excellent model group for comparative evolutionary and phylogeographic analyses.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between the morphology of the reproductive system and the reproductive strategies of six neotropical catfishes using macroscopic and microscopic analyses. The reproductive system of the examined Siluriformes showed diversified characteristics, but permitted their being grouped according to three reproductive strategies: pelagic spawning, demersal spawning, and internally fertilizing. The pelagic spawners Pseudoplatystoma corruscans and Conorhynchos conirostris have testes that are characterized by filiform lobes, absence of testicular secretion, full‐grown oocytes of small diameter, thin zona radiata, and cuboidal follicular cells. Pimelodus maculatus is morphologically distinct from the other two pelagic spawners catfishes due to the presence of testicular secretion. The demersal spawners Lophiosilurus alexandri and Rhinelepis aspera possess homogeneous testicular secretion, large mature oocytes, and columnar follicular cells. The most specialized reproductive system was observed in the internally fertilizing Trachelyopterus galeatus, which possesses a seminal vesicle accessory to the testes, spermatozoa with elongated nuclei that form spermatozeugmata, and a secretory ovarian lamellar epithelium that is associated with sperm storage. The reproductive system observed in Neotropical catfishes showed a relationship associated with the type of fertilization and the reproductive strategies of the six species studied. © 2011 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The gross morphology of the gas bladder is described and compared for representatives of all valid genera of Pseudopimelodidae (Siluriformes). Cephalosilurus albomarginatus and species of Batrochoglanis, and Microglanis have the most basic form: a large, cordiform gas bladder with a simple internal T‐shaped septum. Cephalosilurus apurensis, C. fowleri, and C. nigricauda also have a large, cordiform gas bladder, but they have well‐developed trabeculae associated with the internal T‐shaped septum, and a pair of well‐developed constrictor muscles inserted on the external wall; the latter feature is present in most species of Pimelodidae, but absent in all other catfishes. The monotypic Lophiosilurus alexandri also has well‐developed constrictor muscles, and its gas bladder is moderately sized. The species of Pseudopimelodus and Cruciglanis have a diminutive gas bladder partially divided into two lateral sacs without internal communication, and lack constrictor muscles. The parapophysis of the fourth vertebra is a wide and long shelf connected to the dorsal surface of the gas bladder in most pseudopimelodid genera. However, in the species of Pseudopimelodus and Cruciglanis the parapophysis of the fourth vertebra is shorter and has its anterior ramus folded back, partially covering the gas bladder anteroventrally; and the tympanic opening is smaller than in species of the other genera. Five phylogenetic characters are proposed based on the morphology of the gas bladder and associated structures in species of Pseudopimelodidae, and the evolution of those characters in the family is discussed. It is only in the Hawaiian Islands that species of the otherwise marine genus Telmatogeton have evolved into freshwater. An analysis of polytene chromosomes and karyotypes of two marine species and five freshwater species revealed that paracentric inversions and centric fusions were important in chromosomal evolution. The sequence of polytene chromosome bands common to most species, established as the Telmatogeton standard sequence, is found in a population of T. torrenticola from West Maui. Most species and other populations of T. torrenticola may be derived from the standard sequence by paracentric inversions. Similarities with the standard band sequence places T. japonicus (n=7) rather than T. pacificus (n=4) in the proposed phylogeny as the species closest to the marine ancestor of the freshwater species. One of three species (T. fluviatilis from Oahu, T. torrenticola from West Maui, or an undescribed species from East Maui), each with seven pairs of chromosomes is considered to be closest to the original freshwater species. T. torrenticola is a complex species in which there is an accumulation of fixed inversions and centric fusions in stepwise fashion in populations from west to east (West Maui n=7; East Maui n=6; Kohala Mountains n=5 and Mauna Kea n=4 both from the island of Hawaii). The population of T. torrenticola from Molokai has a reduced chromosome number (n=4) and fixed inversions. T. abnormis and T. hirtus, the only species which exhibit differentiated sex chromosomes, may be derived from the standard sequency by paracentric inversions. T. abnormis (n=4) has a simple XY system and T. hirtus (n=3/4) has a complex XY1Y2 system. Unique sequences of bands, differences in staining intensity of puffs and bands, and an inversion form the basis for the differentiation of the various Y-chromosomes in these species.  相似文献

Pleuroxus smirnovi sp. nov. (Cladocera: Chydoridae) is found in a temporary freshwater body near Lake Zor‐Kul, the Pamirs (territory of Tajikistan). This large, brownish chydorine, with especially high body compressed laterally and supplied with a sharp dorsal keel, “untypical” of the genus Pleuroxus, at the same time, has the number of setae in filter plates of gnathobases II–V typical of this genus, namely 8‐8‐6‐4. My finding of P. smirnovi sp. nov. is a new evidence of an incomplete faunistic coverage and an imperfect state of today's systematics of the subfamily Chydorinae, because this new species has a set of characters apparently intermediate between the genera Pleuroxus Baird, 1843, Plurispina Frey, 1991 and Planicirculus Frey, 1991. Previously, large, compressed, and keeled chydorines were regarded as exclusively Australian, agreeing with ideas on a high endemism of the Australian cladoceran fauna. The Australian freshwater cod genus, Maccullochella is represented by three species: Murray cod, M. peelii peelii, eastern freshwater cod, M. ikei, and trout cod, M.macquariensis. Seven novel microsatellite loci from M. ikei and six previously published loci from M. peelii peelii were tested on wild populations of Murray, eastern and trout cod. Levels of polymorphism varied between species with 13 loci polymorphic in Murray cod, 9 in trout cod and 7 in eastern cod. Observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.053 to 0.842. This suite of microsatellite loci will facilitate future studies of the genetic status of wild and hatchery bred populations of Maccullochella.  相似文献

This study compared the critical swimming speed (Ucrit) and endurance performance of three Australian freshwater fish species in different swim‐test apparatus. Estimates of Ucrit measured in a large recirculating flume were greater for all species compared with estimates from a smaller model of the same recirculating flume. Large differences were also observed for estimates of endurance swimming performance between these recirculating flumes and a free‐surface swim tunnel. Differences in estimates of performance may be attributable to variation in flow conditions within different types of swim chambers. Variation in estimates of swimming performance between different types of flumes complicates the application of laboratory‐based measures to the design of fish passage infrastructure.  相似文献

We examined the species groups relationships of the freshwater snail genus Austropeplea using mitochondrial, nuclear and morphological markers in addition to traditional methods of shell shape analysis. Based primarily on the results of a combined molecular and morphological analysis, samples of the nominal species A. tomentosa form distinct lineages. The New Zealand populations of A. tomentosa are a very distinct lineage from any of the Australian populations attributed to A. tomentosa. Furthermore, within the Australian group, three lineages, south Australia, Tasmania and eastern Australia, appear to have undergone recent and/or rapid speciation events. Samples assigned to A. lessoni were resolved as two distinct lineages, representing the eastern and northern Australian populations. Kutikina hispida was resolved within the Australian A. tomentosa clade. Molecular results for A. viridis suggests that it is also composed of at least two distinct lineages that could be treated as species. Incongruence observed between the single mitochondrial, nuclear and morphological topologies highlight the importance of using a number of different datasets in the delimitation of species-group taxa.  相似文献
