Pomatoschistus anatoliae sp. n. is described from estuary of Göksu River on the Mediterranean coast of the Anatolia. It is distinguished from its congeners by the suborbital papilla pattern, meristic, and ecological features. DNA barcoding based on COI sequences revealed that there is a high nucleotide sequence divergence to the nearest neighbour. Kimura’s two parameter distances between P. anatoliae sp. n. and other species of Pomatoschistus and Knipowitchia have found to be at least 5.1%.

The sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus , was used in aquarium experiments to study the importance of body size for the ability of males to gain access to nest sites and mates. When several male and female P. minutus were allowed to reproduce together, on average, half of the males built nests, and half of those males obtained eggs in their nests. Males with nests were significantly larger than males without nests, and nests with eggs belonged to males larger than the males with empty nests. In another experiment, when two males were competing for one nest, the largest male occupied the nest when both fish were put into the aquarium simultaneously. However, when the smaller male had been allowed to establish a nest before the larger male was introduced, the small male could usually retain the nest. Males with a body length < 50 mm did not build nests at all in the early part of the breeding season. In female choice experiments, no preference for larger males was found. Thus, male-male competition for nest sites and behavioural differences between different sized males seem to be the main factors influencing the non-random mating success in male P. minutus. 相似文献

A new species of Clariger Jordan & Snyder, 1901 was collected from northern Taiwan. The genus was previously known only from Japanese waters. This discovery is the first formal and southernmost record of these marine gobies from the waters of subtropical Taiwan. The new species, Clariger taiwanensissp. n., is distinguished from its congeners by a unique combination of features: (1) fin rays: dorsal-fin rays III, I/8; anal-fin rays modally I/8; and pectoral-fin rays modally 19 (2+16+1); (2) longitudinal dermal ridge on head with 6 barbels; and (3) specific coloration pattern: head and trunk dark brown with scattered pale spots and blotches; cheek, ventral portion of head sometimes pale with deep brown spots; pectoral-fin base with a dark brown band; and caudal fin mostly dark brown proximally and with alternating and irregular dark brown and pale bands distally. A diagnostic key to all nominal species from Japan and Taiwan is provided. 相似文献

A new species of West Balkanian freshwater sand-goby Pomatoschistus montenegrensis sp. nov. (Teleostei: Gobiidae) is described from the Morača River, southern Montenegro, and shown to be related to the euryhaline Adriatic Pomatoschistus canestrinii . The generic status of these two species is discussed with reference to the limits of Pomatoschistus (type Gobius minutus ) and the status of a subgenus [ Ninnigobius (type-species Gobius canestrini )]. The habitat and the local distribution of the new species are described. 相似文献

Sand gobies areextremely abundant in coastal waters and estuaries. Pomuroschistus lozunoi tends to be overlooked due to identification problems. This paper summarizes the characteristics to distinguish P. lozanoi from P. minutus and presents a new distinctive feature that allows identification of juveniles from 15-20 mm standard length onward. The known geographic distribution of P. lozanoi is extended northward to 53°30' N and southward to 40°N on the coast of Europe. In northern Europe P. loxmoi seems better adapted to the estuarine habitat than previously thought. 相似文献

The use of scale inspection as a means of age-determination in Pomatoschistus microps and Pomatoschistus minutus in the Tagus estuary is confirmed, but annulus formation pattern is different from that described for P. microps in the area of the British Isles (Miller, 1975). In Britain, two annuli are laid down on the scales each year, but in the Tagus, only one annulus is formed. One possible reason for this difference is the fact that in the Tagus the peak breeding season and the lowest water temperatures coincide. Therefore, the two causes of annulus formation coexist at the same time of year.
Population structure in both species is dominated by the 0-group, which appears earlier (April/May) than reported for other areas. Maximum age seems not to exceed 26 months in P. microps and 32 months in P. minutus . 相似文献

A molecular cytogenetic study of Gobius niger has been conducted by treating its mitotic chromosomes with silver-, CMA3- and DAPI-staining and fluorescent in situ hybridization using four multicopy or repetitive DNAs (the 28S and 5S rDNAs, the TTAGGG telomeric repeat and the mariner-like elements) as probes. In particular, the study proved the presence of NOR heteromorphism and suggested the possible role
of the transposable element mariner in its genesis. In situ hybridization with the 5S rDNA probe proved the presence of just one 5S-bringing chromosome pair, whereas hybridization with
the telomeric repeat revealed small bright hybridization spots, uniform in size and intensity, on each telomere of all chromosomes
but no interstitial signals were noticed.

Four new species of Eviota (Teleostei: Gobiidae) are described from French Polynesia. Eviota hinanoae occurs from the Gambier, Austral and Society Archipelagos and differs from its closest relatives primarily in sensory pore pattern, having cuplike male urogenital papilla, and in lacking prominent dark pigmentation on the base of the pectoral fin. Three other new species, E. dorsimaculata, E. lacrimosa and E. deminuta, are known only from the Marquesas Islands and are distinguished from congeners by differences in pigmentation, sensory pore pattern, urogenital papilla shape, the number of rays in the dorsal and anal fins, and the length of the fifth pelvic-fin ray. Eviota deminuta represents one of the smallest known species of Eviota and features reductions in several morphological characters, including the loss of all head pores. Three of the new species are included in a phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase-I, along with 21 additional species of Eviota. 相似文献

Using species-level phylogenies, the speciation mode of Gyrodactylus species infecting a single host genus was evaluated. Eighteen Gyrodactylus species were collected from gobies of the genus Pomatoschistus and sympatric fish species across the distribution range of the hosts. The V4 region of the ssrRNA and the internal transcribed spacers encompassing the 5.8S rRNA gene were sequenced; by including published sequences a total of 30 species representing all subgenera were used in the data analyses. The molecular phylogeny did not support the morphological groupings into subgenera as based on the excretory system, suggesting that the genus needs systematic revisions. Paraphyly of the total Gyrodactylus fauna of the gobies indicates that at least two independent colonisation events were involved, giving rise to two separate groups, belonging to the subgenus Mesonephrotus and Paranephrotus, respectively. The most recent association probably originated from a host switching event from Gyrodactylus arcuatus, which parasitises three-spined stickleback, onto Pomatoschistus gobies. These species are highly host-specific and form a monophyletic group, two possible ‘signatures’ of co-speciation. Host specificity was lower in the second group. The colonising capacity of these species is illustrated by a host jump from gobiids to another fish order (Anguilliformes), supporting the hypothesis of a European origin of Gyrodactylus anguillae and its intercontinental introduction by the eel trade. Thus, allopatric speciation seems to be the dominant mode of speciation in this host–parasite system, with a possible case of sympatric speciation. 相似文献

A new freshwater goby,Rhinogobius xianshuiensis sp. nov. was collected from the upper Mulan River basin of Xianyou County, Fujian Province, eastern China. The species is
distinguished from related species in the region by 3–7 predorsal scales, 27 vertebrae, cephalic lateralis canals always always
with 2 derived post-orbital pores (ε1) in adults, a reddish-brown vertical line below the anterior margin of the eye, and
a red netlike pattern on the opercle. A key to species ofRhinogobius with higher vertebral numbers (27–29) from eastern China, Taiwan and Japan is provided. 相似文献

Gobies are difficult to identify, as they are very similar in appearance. Here, we identified (sub)adult specimens of 12 goby species from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea by carefully analysing meristic characters, coloration patterns, papillae row patterns and morphometric measurements. The results of the morphological identifications were congruent with those obtained with the analysis of COI DNA barcodes; sequences from morphological conspecific specimens were clustered together in clades with bootstrap values ≥ 99%. Mean intra‐ and interspecific distance (uncorrected p) was 0.37 and 18.97%, respectively. A gap between the maximum intraspecific distance and the distance to the nearest neighbour was apparent in every species and ranged from 2.35 to 16.11%. The Barcode Index Number (BIN) analysis performed on the Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD) web platform, assigned the DNA barcodes to 12 separate clusters corresponding to sequence‐ and morphology‐based identification. In 25% of the investigated species, the BIN clusters showed taxonomic discordances, as they contained sequences assigned to more than one species. This result demonstrates the importance of accurate morphological species identification at the beginning of the barcoding pipeline. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London 相似文献

Platygobiopsis dispar sp. nov. is described on the basis of four specimens from the South China Sea off central Vietnam. The species differs from
the only previously described species, P. akihito, in the morphology of the cephalic laterosensory system; in the distribution of scales on top of the head; in the absence
of scales at the base of the pectoral-fin; in having 11 branched rays in the second dorsal and anal fins; in the lower predorsal,
transverse, and lateral scale counts; and in other minor details. The genus Platygobiopsis is recorded for the South China Sea for the first time.

We studied egg care and guarding behaviour in the paternal sand goby, Pomatoschislus minutus , in relation to egg number and age. A male's expected reproductive success is assumed to increase with larger egg masses and older eggs. Non-shareable care, i.e. fanning, was higher in larger and older egg masses. Egg age explained 65% and egg mass size 22% of the total variation in the amount of fanning performed by a male. Contrary to expectation, egg removal did not affect a male's fanning behaviour, Males that were approached stayed longer in the nest when they guarded larger egg masses. Males with older eggs were also more reluctant to leave the nest. The time since a male had been chased away from his nest until he returned decreased as the season progressed. The results are discussed in relation to tradeoffs between present and future reproductive events. 相似文献

Synopsis
Croilia mossambica, a burrowing goby endemic to the coastal lakes of south east Africa occurs from L. Poelela (salinity 8%.) to L. Sibaya (freshwater). Since these lakes are isolated from one another its distribution is discontinuous. It is not found in estuaries or the sea. In L. Sibaya C. mossambica is present on sheltered sides from a depth of 1 m to about 16 m. On exposed shores it is not found at less than 3.5 m depth. It is restricted to sandy, quiet water areas and is unable to form burrows where the substrate is disturbed by water movement, is muddy or consists of sand with a particle diameter greater than 0.5 mm. The maximum depth at which it lives is probably determined by light penetration since it is dependent on sight for prey capture. The food consists of slow moving benthic invertebrates such as chironomid larvae, gastropods, bivalves and amphipods. The relative importance of each depends upon its abundance. C. mossambica is a summer breeder with a protracted spawning season. The sticky eggs measure 0.7–0.8 mm when laid. Tolerance experiments show that it is euryhaline and can survive in seawater of 35%. and that its upper temperature limit is between 32 and 35°C. Temperatures in shallow waters of lakes and estuaries of the region frequently exceed 35°C. Thus its local distribution may be limited by temperature. Its lack of tolerance to high temperatures, to marked water movements and its ability to live in seawater indicates that C. mossambica is suited to life in the sea rather than in estuaries. It is suggested that it was present in quiet areas of the sea, such as lagoons, and that it invaded the coastal lakes which were formed as the estuaries and river valleys were inundated during the Pleistocene marine transgression. C. mossambica cannot tolerate estuarine conditions and with the present absence of quiet water in the sea off the south east African coast the species is now confined to deep coastal lakes.Note 相似文献

We studied the effect of egg presence on female mate choicein a fish with paternal care. Females who were allowed a freechoice between two males mated within a shorter time than femaleswho were randomly assigned to a particular male. When a secondfemale was allowed to choose among the males, she preferredthe same male as the previous female. This result shows thatfemales are concordant in their mate choice. When the initialfemale was randomly assigned to mate with one of two males (forcedchoice), the second female mated randomly with respect to thefirst one. Thus females do not prefer males with eggs. If theinitial female was given a free choice, but the eggs were removedfrom the chosen male, the test female mated randomly. When boththe males initially had mated but one randomly determined male'seggs were removed, the test female preferred the male who wasstill guarding eggs. These experiments show that females avoidspawning in unsuccessful nests. When the females in the freechoice/egg removal experiment mated with the unsuccessful malethere was a considerably bigger size difference in favor ofthis male than when the females mated with the other male. Weconclude that female sand gobies show clear mate preferences, but that they do not prefer males with eggs over males withouteggs. They do, however, avoid mating with males guarding unsuccessfulnests. We therefore suggest that egg loss could be an importantfactor selecting for egg preference. 相似文献
