We contrast two classes of choice processes, those assuming time-consuming comparisons and those where stimuli for each option act independently, competing for expression by cross censorship. The Sequential Choice Model (SCM) belongs in the latter category, and has received empirical support in several procedures involving deterministic alternatives. Here we test this model in risky choices. In two treatments, each with five conditions, European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) faced choices between options with unpredictable outcomes and risk-free alternatives. In the delay treatment the five conditions involved choices between a variable option offering two equiprobable delays to reward and a fixed option with delay differing between conditions. The amount treatment was structurally similar, but amount of reward rather than delay was manipulated. As assumed (and required) by the SCM, latency to respond in no-choice trials reflected each option's richness with respect to the background alternatives, and, crucially, preferences in simultaneous choices were predictable from latencies to each option in forced trials. However, we did not detect reliable differences in response times between forced and choice trials, neither the lengthening expected from evaluation models nor the shortening expected from the SCM.  相似文献

Pigeons were trained to respond to two alternating concurrent reinforcement schedules. The reinforcement probabilities were .05 and .10 in one component, and .10 and .20 in the other. In one condition, the pigeons received training on a discrete-trial procedure in which the keylights remained illuminated for 5s or until a response occurred. In another condition, pigeons received training on a procedure in which the reinforcement contingencies were the same as in the discrete-trial procedure, but the stimuli were not turned off after 5s or after a response. Following training in each condition, probe tests were presented. In both conditions, the .20 alternative was, overall, preferred to the .05 alternative during probe tests. Following discrete-trial training, there was no reliable preference between the two .10 alternatives. However, when the stimuli remained illuminated during the intertrial interval periods during training, probe tests results showed preference for the .10 alternative that had been presented in the leaner context during training. The pattern of results is consistent with the notion that probe preference can be influenced both by the absolute reinforcement schedules associated with each alternative, as well as changeover behavior developed during training.  相似文献

It has been suggested that when the delivery of several rewards is separated in time, e.g. one reward immediately and a second reward a few moments later, the value of an alternative that includes these "bundled" rewards will be the sum of the hyperbolic discount functions of the individual rewards. The current study examined this hypothesis using an adjusting amount procedure. In this procedure, rats chose between a delayed food alternative and an immediate food alternative, where the amount of immediate food altered according to each rat's choices. The size of the immediate reward when rats were indifferent between the delayed and immediate alternatives indexed the value of the delayed alternative. Discount functions describing the relationship between the indifference points and the delay to food were created for conditions in which the delay alternative consisted of a single reward (150mul of sucrose solution) delayed by 0, 2, 4, 8, or 16s following the reinforced response. These functions were used to predict the indifference points in other conditions for which an additional 150mul of sucrose solution was delivered at 0, 4, 8, or 16s following the reinforced response. The model fit the data well. However, there were systematic deviations that suggested animals were sensitive to the context within which delays were presented, in addition to the delays themselves. That is, preference for the delayed alternative was lower than predicted when the delay to the additional reward was long (8 or 16s) and higher than the predicted values when it was short (0 or 4s).  相似文献

Several reports have shown that animals will sometimes engage in behaviors that reduce their exposure to a 60 Hz electric field (E-field). The field, therefore, can function as an aversive stimulus. In other studies, the E-field at equivalent strengths failed to function as an aversive stimulus. The present experiment, using rats, demonstrates how factors other than field strength can influence whether a subject engages in behavior that reduces field exposure. The general design consisted of giving the rat a choice between two alternatives, one of which sometimes included an added stimulus. Each subject was trained to press each of two levers to obtain food. Pressing one lever was reinforced intermittently under a variable interval 2 min schedule (VI 2); pressing the other lever was reinforced by a second VI 2 schedule operating independently of the first. Under this concurrent schedule the rat spent 50% of the daily 50 min session responding to each of the levers, indicating that they were equally “valued.” Next, while the schedules remained in effect, the first response to one of the levers turned on a 100 kV/m E-field which remained on until the rat pressed the other lever. The time spent responding under the schedule associated with the field was reduced by about 5–10%. When the procedure was changed so that no lever presses produced food, i.e., extinction, but the added stimulus contingency remained, the rats spent even less time in the presence of the field. Similar outcomes were observed during both the concurrent food or extinction schedules when incandescent light was used. Thus, both an E-field and incandescent light functioned as aversive stimuli, but the magnitude of the aversiveness was small. When allowed successive free choices of the arms of a T-maze, domestic fowls and pigeons repeated rather than alternated entries of the two alternatives. Such perseveration was less when one arm was black and the other white than when both were grey. Perseveration increased between the beginning and the end of the experiment and was unaffected by confinement to a chosen arm for 30 or 60 seconds. Removal from a chosen arm may have provided relief from an aversive situation and thus reinforced subsequent re-entries of the same arm. The results were therefore accounted for by the adoption of a win-stay escape strategy.  相似文献

Background

The most widely used state-of-the-art methods for reconstructing species phylogenies from genomic sequence data assume that sampled loci are identically and independently distributed. In principle, free recombination between loci and a lack of intra-locus recombination are necessary to satisfy this assumption. Few studies have quantified the practical impact of recombination on species tree inference methods, and even fewer have used genomic sequence data for this purpose. One prominent exception is the 2012 study of Lanier and Knowles. A main finding from the study was that species tree inference methods are relatively robust to intra-locus recombination, assuming free recombination between loci. The latter assumption means that the open question regarding the impact of recombination on species tree analysis is not fully resolved.

Results

The goal of this study is to further investigate this open question. Using simulations based upon the multi-species coalescent-with-recombination model as well as empirical datasets, we compared common pipeline-based techniques for inferring species phylogenies. The simulation conditions included a range of dataset sizes and several choices for recombination rate which was either uniform across loci or incorporated recombination hotspots. We found that pipelines which explicitly utilize inferred recombination breakpoints to delineate recombination-free intervals result in greater accuracy compared to widely used alternatives that preprocess sequences based upon linkage disequilibrium decay. Furthermore, the use of a relatively simple approach for recombination breakpoint inference does not degrade the accuracy of downstream species tree inference compared to more accurate alternatives.

Conclusions

Our findings clarify the impact of recombination upon current phylogenomic pipelines for species tree inference. Pipeline-based approaches which utilize inferred recombination breakpoints to densely sample loci across genomic sequences can tolerate intra-locus recombination and violations of the assumption of free recombination between loci.

The present study investigated whether choices between contingencies of variation are affected by the degree of variability required. For such, five pigeons were exposed to a concurrent chain schedule. In the initial links, responses in one key initiated the terminal link with the most stringent variation requirement while responses in the other key initiated the terminal link with the least stringent variation requirement. In both terminal links, four-responses sequences were reinforced according to a variation criterion, which favored less frequent and less recent sequences. The probability of reinforcement in the terminal link with the least stringent criterion was manipulated in order to generate similar percentage and rate of reinforcers in both terminal links. Choices for the terminal link with the least stringent criterion were more frequent than choices for the terminal link with the most stringent criterion. It is possible that situations that demand lower levels of behavior variability are chosen due to the lower response cost correlated to those situations.  相似文献

Humans and some birds and insects sometimes prefer alternatives associated with greater past cost or need, sometimes affording losses. It has been proposed that this is widespread because learning may include knowledge about both the physical properties of alternatives and state-dependent fitness gains. We examine the phenomenon for the first time in a fish, the banded tetra (Astyanax fasciatus). During training we paired two different color cues to identical food rewards, one under greater deprivation than the other. We then tested preference between these cues under both deprivation states. Consistent with previous results in other taxa, the fish preferred the cue associated with previous greater deprivation regardless of the condition under which they were tested. These results provide further support to the view that organisms assign value using state-dependent increments in fitness during learning. Although generally adaptive, under experimental conditions state-dependent valuation learning can lead to paradoxical choices.  相似文献

The present experiment examined spontaneous visual choice behaviour and acquisition of a positively reinforced visual discrimination task in Swiss albino mice. In experiment I animals were given 4 consecutive trials in which they could freely enter either a dimly illuminated or a darkened arm of a Y-maze; the position of the light stimulus was randomized across trials. D groups and L groups were tested during the dark and the light period of the day respectively. Results revealed a significant spontaneous preference for the illuminated arm of the maze, independent of the testing period. It is suggested that the dim light has a reinforcing value because it provides additional information about a novel environment. In a second experiment an appetitive visual discrimination task was carried out in the same Y-maze. After a pretraining period, half the animals were reinforced in the illuminated arm and half were reinforced in the darkened one, on five consecutive days. On the first test session all groups of animals chose the illuminated arm significantly more frequently, whereas light/dark choices reached chance level on the last test session. Discrimination learning was not acquired and a behavioural analysis revealed an increasing tendency to a side preference across testing.  相似文献

To study matching in a species distantly related to mammals and birds, seven bluegill were trained to break a photobeam using a nose-poke response for access to pelleted food in their home aquaria during one-h sessions. Reinforcer ratios available from the two response alternatives varied among the following: 16:1, 8:1, 4:1, 1:1, 1:4, 1:8, and 1:16. The overall reinforcement rate was held at 0.8/min. All experiments were conducted in a closed economy, i.e., the fish's daily food ration was available only during experimental sessions. Matching functions are reported for each fish using all combinations of scheduled and obtained reinforcer ratios as the independent variables and response and time ratios as the dependent variables. All matching functions had slopes less than 1.0 and r2 values above 0.70. Overall response rates were unrelated to the reinforcer ratios but, as with other species studied, changeover rates were highest for the 1:1 condition and lowest for the 16:1 conditions. These results are consistent with data obtained from more traditionally studied taxa (e.g., birds, mammals, and primates), and similar previous studies with fish, suggesting that matching has been conserved since fish, birds, and mammals evolved from a common ancestor over 400 million years ago.  相似文献

Pigeons were trained on an arbitrary matching-to-sample task in which Vary and Repeat contingencies served as sample stimuli. During the sample component, two keys were lit red and a four-peck sequence was reinforced if its frequency was less than a certain threshold (Vary sample) or if it comprised one of two target sequences (Repeat sample). During the comparison component, two keys were lit white and green, and correct choices depended on the previous sample contingency. Pigeons learned to emit high and low variability levels during the sample, and correct matching choices were obtained. In two discrimination testing phases, the requirement of variation (Vary sample) or of repetition (Repeat sample) was parametrically manipulated such that behavioral variability became undifferentiated between samples (low sample disparity) and then differentiated (high sample disparity) again. Accurate choices fell to chance under low sample disparity conditions, but improved under high disparity conditions. The results provide evidence that high and low variability levels can be produced in the absence of antecedent cues and that pigeons can accurately report whether they had experienced a Vary or a Repeat contingency, thus indicating that those contingencies may serve discriminative functions.  相似文献

Plant structures exhibit five principal classes of variation in heterogeneous environments, namely uniformity, continuous lability, genetic specialization (polymorphism), environmentally- or statuscued alternatives (conditional choices) and multiple strategies—the simultaneous operation by one plant of distinct types of structures that perform the same function. Multiple strategies are a diverse but neglected class that includes simultaneous cosexuality (hermaphroditism and other monomorphic sex conditions), facultative cleistogamy, heteromorphic diaspores, and reproduction by both seeds and ramets. An analysis of seven functions in the angiosperm flora of New Zealand shows that uniform and labile strategies considered jointly are most common, and multiple strategies are more common than either polymorphisms or conditional choices. Phenotypic models of the natural selection of structural variation are presented. They predict the general conditions under which multiple, conditional and uniform strategies are selected when the environment is spatially heterogeneous for either parents or their offspring. The models can explain many features of variation strategies, including why multiple strategies are a plant speciality, why conditional strategies such as sex choosing are rare and random choices are even more rare (unknown?), and why some self-fertilizing plants have distinct cleistogamous flowers. Stiffness degradation and strength degradation are often measured to monitor and characterize the effects of damage accumulation in bone. Based on evidence that these properties could be affected by not only damage magnitude but also test conditions, the present study investigated the effect of hold condition and recovery time on measures of tensile damage. Machined human femoral cortical bone specimens were subjected to tensile tests consisting of a pre-damage diagnostic loading cycle, a damage loading cycle and post-damage cycle. Controlled variables were recovery time (1, 10, and 100 min) and hold condition (zero load or zero strain) after the damage cycle. Damage measures were calculated as the ratio of each post-damage cycle to the pre-damage value for loading modulus, secant modulus, unloading modulus, stress relaxation and strain (stress) recovery at 1 min post-diagnostic time. The damage cycle caused reductions in all measures, and some measures varied with recovery time and hold condition. Apparent modulus degradation for both hold conditions decreased with recovery time. Stress relaxation was unaffected by recovery time for both hold conditions. Zero-strain hold conditions resulted in lower values for degradation of modulus and change of relaxation. Stress or strain recovery after the damage cycle was evident through 100 min, but 90% of the recovery occurred within 10 min. The results demonstrate that choice of test conditions can influence the apparent magnitude of damage effects. They also indicate that 10 min recovery time was sufficient to stabilize most measures of the damage state.  相似文献

Different samples occasioning the same reinforced comparison response in matching-to-sample are interchangeable for one another outside of original training. The present studies were designed to verify the role of these common responses in producing acquired sample equivalence by explicitly varying the presence or absence of this commonality during training. In each of the two experiments, one group of pigeons made the same reinforced choice response following multiple sample stimuli, whereas controls either made different reinforced choices following each sample (Experiment 1) or reinforced choices after only two of four center-key stimuli (Experiment 2). Later, two of the original samples/center-key stimuli were established as conditional cues for new comparison responses, after which the ability of the remaining samples/center-key stimuli to occasion those new responses was assessed. Following common-response training, matching accuracy was higher on class-consistent than on class-inconsistent transfer tests, whereas accuracy in the controls was generally intermediate between these two extremes, a pattern similar to that reported in the human paired-associate literature. These findings confirm that occasioning the same reinforced choice response is one means by which disparate samples become functionally equivalent.  相似文献

In the present study the influence of speed of contraction on the interplay between recruitment and firing rate of motor units (MUs) was assessed. The surface electromyographic (sEMG) signal was recorded in nine healthy subjects from the right biceps brachii using a linear electrode array during ramp isometric contractions (from 0 to 100% of the maximal voluntary force, MVC) at 5, 10, and 20% MVC s(-1) (ramp phase), followed by 10 s of sustained MVC (hold phase). The median frequency (MDF), Root Mean Square (RMS) and conduction velocity (CV) of sEMG, were computed on adjacent epochs covering a force range of 5% MVC each. Full motor unit recruitment (FMUR) point was assessed as the force level at which MDF reached its maximum value; the MDF decay during the hold phase was taken as an index of localized muscle fatigue. At 5% MVC s(-1), FMUR was reached at 52.3% MVC. At 10%MVC s(-1) FMUR was achieved at 58% MVC; while at 20% MVC s(-1) FMUR point was located at 77% MVC, being statistically different from 5 and 10% MVCs(-1) ramps (p<0.05). The MDF decay was steeper at higher speed. CV modifications mirrored those reported for MDF. The RMS increased in a curvilinear fashion and the maximum value was always attained during the hold phase. Our findings suggest that MU recruitment strategies are significantly related to the speed of contraction even in a single muscle.  相似文献

Normative models of choice usually predict preferences between alternatives by computing their value according to some criterion, then identifying the alternative with greatest value. An important consequence of this procedure is captured in the economic concept of rationality, defined through a number of principles that are necessary for the existence of an ordinal scale of value upon which organisms base their choices. Violations of these principles, such as some recently reported breaches of transitivity and regularity in birds and honeybees, have strong implications for the understanding of decision mechanisms in humans and nonhumans alike. We investigated rationality in risky choice using European starlings, Sturnus vulgaris. Birds had to choose between two or three food sources, each associated with a different variance in delay to reward. In three experiments, starlings were strongly risk prone, showing regular and consistent preferences in binary and trinary choices. Preferences also satisfied weak and strong stochastic transitivity. Our results extend the generality of previous research in risk-sensitive foraging to situations where more than two alternatives are present and suggest that violations of rationality in risk-sensitive choices may be expressed only under restricted sets of conditions. Purpose

Uncertainty is present in many forms in life cycle assessment (LCA). However, little attention has been paid to analyze the variability that methodological choices have on LCA outcomes. To address this variability, common practice is to conduct a sensitivity analysis, which is sometimes treated only at a qualitative level. Hence, the purpose of this paper was to evaluate the uncertainty and the sensitivity in the LCA of swine production due to two methodological choices: the allocation approach and the life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) method.

Methods

We used a comparative case study of swine production to address uncertainty due to methodological choices. First, scenario variation through a sensitivity analysis of the approaches used to address the multi-functionality problem was conducted for the main processes of the system product, followed by an impact assessment using five LCIA methods at the midpoint level. The results from the sensitivity analysis were used to generate 10,000 independent simulations using the Monte Carlo method and then compared using comparison indicators in histogram graphics.

Results and discussion

Regardless of the differences between the absolute values of the LCA obtained due to the allocation approach and LCIA methods used, the overall ranking of scenarios did not change. The use of the substitution method to address the multi-functional processes in swine production showed the highest values for almost all of the impact categories, except for freshwater ecotoxicity; therefore, this method introduced the greater variations into our analysis. Regarding the variation of the LCIA method, for acidification, eutrophication, and freshwater ecotoxicity, the results were very sensitive. The uncertainty analysis with the Monte Carlo simulations showed a wide range of results and an almost equal probability of all the scenarios be the preferable option to decrease the impacts on acidification, eutrophication, and freshwater ecotoxicity. Considering the aggregate result variation across allocation approaches and LCIA methods, the uncertainty is too high to identify a statistically significant alternative.

Conclusions

The uncertainty analysis showed that performing only a sensitivity analysis could mislead the decision-maker with respect to LCA results; our analysis with the Monte Carlo simulation indicates no significant difference between the alternatives compared. Although the uncertainty in the LCA outcomes could not be decreased due to the wide range of possible results, to some extent, the uncertainty analysis can lead to a less uncertain decision-making by demonstrating the uncertainties between the compared alternatives.

在间歇实验和连续运行的反应器中,考察了基因工程菌细胞密度在活性污泥中的衰减,进行了动力学模型拟合,求得模型参数,并分析了影响衰减的因素.结果表明,在间歇实验和连续运行反应器中,细胞密度在活性污泥中均呈现初期快速衰减而后趋于稳定的趋势.其衰减动力学可以用Logistic模型和Gompertz模型拟合,两个模型的拟合都有很好的相关性和显著性,拟合优度没有差异.在不同的条件下,间歇实验拟合得到的参数取值范围是:Logistic模型衰减系数r′=0.5~0.6 h-1,稳定细胞密度K′=104~105 cfu·ml-1;Gompertz模型初始衰减系数b=0.6~1.2 h-1,比衰减系数a=0.02~0.09 h-1.初始投加密度对衰减速率影响不大,但是显著影响稳定细胞密度.污泥浓度和温度对衰减速率和稳定密度均有显著影响. 污泥浓度越大,衰减越快,稳定密度越大;而温度越低,衰减越快,稳定密度也会越低.营养条件和微型动物捕食也是影响衰减的重要因素.基因工程菌在连续运行的膜生物反应器和活性污泥反应器中的细胞密度衰减,也可以用Logistic模型拟合,其参数在间歇实验的取值范围内.  相似文献

The role of changes of mind and multiple choices has recently received increased attention in the study of perceptual decision-making. Previously, these extensions to standard two-alternative tasks have been studied separately. Here we explored how changes of mind depend on the number of choice-alternatives. To this end, we tested 14 human subjects on a 2- and 4-alternative direction-discrimination task. Changes of mind in the participants' movement trajectories could be observed for two and for four choice alternatives. With fewer alternatives, participants responded faster and more accurately. The frequency of changes of mind, however, did not significantly differ for the different numbers of choice alternatives. Nevertheless, mind-changing improved the participants' final performance, particularly for intermediate difficulty levels, in both experimental conditions. Moreover, the mean reaction times of individual participants were negatively correlated with their overall tendency to make changes of mind. We further reproduced these findings with a multi-alternative attractor model for decision-making, while a simple race model could not account for the experimental data. Our experiment, combined with the theoretical models allowed us to shed light on: (1) the differences in choice behavior between two and four alternatives, (2) the differences between the data of our human subjects and previous monkey data, (3) individual differences between participants, and (4) the inhibitory interaction between neural representations of choice alternatives.  相似文献
