A weekly periodicity in the occurrence of headache was found in 53 patients with migraine and in 20 with tension headache during an observation period of four weeks. In the migraine group the frequency was highest on Thursday and on Saturday and lowest on Sunday–Monday, and in patients with tension headache it was lowest on Sunday–Tuesday and highest on Friday. During the observation period several climatic factors were recorded. After correction for the weekly periodicity a highly significant correlation was found in the migraine group between headache frequency, on the one hand, and atmospheric pressure and outdoor temperature recorded 1–3 days later, on the other.  相似文献

Nonrestorative sleep (NRS), characterized by a lack of refreshment upon awakening, has received little attention in the sleep literature even though it can occur and cause impairment apart from other sleep difficulties associated with insomnia. The Restorative Sleep Questionnaire (RSQ) is one of the first validated self-report instruments for investigating NRS severity, presenting new opportunities to explore what factors predict and perhaps contribute to unrefreshing sleep. The present study sought to determine whether inherent circadian preference for morning or evening activity, known as chronotype, predicted restorative sleep in 164 college undergraduates who completed daily RSQs over 2 weeks. The participants who endorsed greater orientation to evening activity on the morningness–eveningness questionnaire reported significantly less average restorative sleep across their full sampling period, and this association was maintained after accounting for demographic factors, number of sleep-relevant psychiatric and medical diagnoses, sleep diary parameters, self-reported status as an insomniac and ratings of sleep quality. When analyses were conducted separately for weekday and weekend RSQ scores, eveningness predicted NRS independently of extraneous variables only during the workweek, not during Saturday and Sunday. These findings have implications for the developing conceptualization of NRS, and continue the work of elucidating the interconnections between common sleep disturbances and the circadian system.  相似文献

There is a well-known tendency to delay and prolong our sleep during weekends (Saturday and Sunday), with an advance and reduction of sleep during workdays (Monday to Friday). The objective of this work was to determine if the changes of sleep during weekends are produced by a partial sleep deprivation or a lack of entraining of circadian rhythms to an advanced phase, during workdays. The subjects were 52 undergraduate female students, mean age = 17.5 years, SD = 1.32. All students attended school following a regular schedule, from Monday to Friday. Two groups of students were studied: one attended school from 07:00 to 12:00 h (morning group, n = 30); the other attended school from 14:00 to 18:00 (afternoon group, n = 22). None of the students worked or was engaged in other activity with a fixed schedule. All kept a sleep-wake diary for 2 weeks, in which they recorded their bedtimes, wakeup times, and sleep-onset latencies. The morning group delayed 47.4 min [t(29) = 4.72, p < 0.0001] and prolonged their sleep 118.2 min [t(29) = 9.4, p < 0.0001] during weekends. Although the afternoon group had the opportunity to maintain a delayed phase and a long sleep time throughout the week, they delayed their bedtime by 24 min [t(21) = 2.99, p < 0.01] during weekends, without changing their sleep duration. The findings suggest that the prolonged sleep during weekends is due to reduction of sleep during workdays, whereas the delay of bedtime seems to be associated with a tendency of the human circadian system to maintain a delayed phase  相似文献

The aim of this study was to explore how interindividual differences in circadian type (morningness) and sleep timing regularity might be related to subjective sleep quality and quantity. Self-report circadian phase preference, sleep timing, sleep quality, and sleep duration were assessed in a sample of 62 day-working adults (33.9% male, age 23?48 yrs). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) measured subjective sleep quality and the Sleep Timing Questionnaire (STQ) assessed habitual sleep latency and minutes awake after sleep onset. The duration, timing, and stability of sleep were assessed using the STQ separately for work-week nights (Sunday?Thursday) and for weekend nights (Friday and Saturday). Morningness-eveningness was assessed using the Composite Scale of Morningness (CSM). Daytime sleepiness was measured using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). A morning-type orientation was associated with longer weekly sleep duration, better subjective sleep quality, and shorter sleep-onset latency. Stable weekday rise-time correlated with better self-reported sleep quality and shorter sleep-onset latency. A more regular weekend bedtime was associated with a shorter sleep latency. A more stable weekend rise-time was related to longer weekday sleep duration and lower daytime sleepiness. Increased overall regularity in rise-time was associated with better subjective sleep quality, shorter sleep-onset latency, and higher weekday sleep efficiency. Finally, a morning orientation was related to increased regularity in both bedtimes and rise-times. In conclusion, in daytime workers, a morning-type orientation and more stable sleep timing are associated with better subjective sleep quality. The aim of this work is to study the human' SWC development in the first six years of life, in a longitudinal approach. Six boys, attending the same kindergarten at University of São Paulo, participated in the study. Data were collected on five different occasions, from the second to the sixth year of life. On each occasion, the sleep/wake behavior was followed for seven consecutive days (Sunday to Saturday) by an observer at the kindergarten and at home by the parents. Mean total sleep duration as well mean diurnal sleep duration (episodes from 7 AM to 7 PM) and night sleep duration (7 PM to 7 AM) were obtained for all subjects. Data were compared by ANOVA for repeated measures and processed using the Fast Fourier Transform to obtain the power spectrum of the sleep/wake oscillations. Results were submitted to a test of compound periodicities, to detect the significant components of the spectrum. This test generates, for each frequency, a value (Y), which represents the contribution of this frequency to overall rhythmicity. Results showed an age effect on total sleep duration (p&lt;0.05), due to a reduction of diurnal sleep (p&lt;0.01). An age effect on night sleep duration was not observed. Differences were observed in the age of disappearance of diurnal sleep behavior. An increase in the sleep/wake circadian component was observed for all children. Individual differences in this component were found coinciding with the disappearance of diurnal sleep episodes. As the children lived the same temporal patterns at the kindergarten the interindividual differences which were found can be explained by different temporal patterns at home and/or by individual differences in maturation of the circadian timing system.  相似文献

Previous long-term studies have shown that in the pineal gland of rats melatonin synthesis is subject to infradian rhythms with periods between 4 and 7 days. Since in these studies melatonin-related parameters were measured at one timepoint of a 24-hr cycle only, the aim of the present investigation was to extend these experiments by more frequent sampling, to characterize the infradian rhythmicity in more detail. Male Sprague-Dawley rats kept under a light schedule of LD 12:12 (lights on at 0700) were killed at 6-hr intervals on 8 consecutive days. After decapitation the pineal gland was rapidly dissected out, followed by measurements of one of the melatonin-forming enzymes, serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity. It was found that pineal NAT activity exhibited the well known day/night rhythm, i.e. low activity during daytime and strikingly enhanced activity at night, during the first 4 days of the experiment. On the fifth night (from Saturday to Sunday) an unusually high NAT peak occurred at 2400 hr, followed by two atypical 24-hr cycles. In the first cycle the midnight and 0600 hr values were equal and in the second cycle the 0600 hr value was significantly higher than the midnight value. To investigate whether the unusually high NAT peak was a single event or not, four additional short-term experiments were carried out at 2400 hr on 4 consecutive weekends, from Friday to Monday. The out of hours workload of a training practice in a suburban and semirural area on the south coast of England was studied for one year. An overall rate of contact of 273/1000 patients was found, which indicated a workload greater than that reported in most other studies. The duty doctor received over 35 telephone calls from patients during some Saturdays (1200 Saturday to 0800 Sunday) and Sundays (0800 to 0800 Monday), up to five being between 2300 and 0700. Of the patients who contacted a general practitioner, 44% were given advice by telephone and 4.9% were admitted to hospital. The admission rate was lower than that given in other studies. A considerable proportion of the workload arose from doctors covering the casualty department of a cottage hospital. Patients having a high expectation of 24 hour care by general practitioners in an area of comparative affluence (Jarman indices -13.8 to 1.7) may account for this aspect of the workload.  相似文献

This study deals with female industrial night workers. There is little scientific literature on this topic since, until recently, such shift systems have in most countries been restricted to men. The amount of diurnal sleep, as well as complaints about fatigue and poor sleep, were compared in women who were (n = 17) or were not (n = 26) caring for children. The women were engaged at an assembly line, working nights (22:00-06:00) from Monday to Friday. They filled out sleep logs for 10 consecutive weeks and were interviewed about complaints concerned with fatigue and poor sleep. A comparison of the diurnal sleeps taken between consecutive night shifts showed that the average total length of daily sleep, as well as the time of onset of the first sleep, did not differ between the groups; however, workers who had children tended to show, in comparison with their childless colleagues, more sleep episodes per day and a shorter first sleep. The total number of complaints about poor sleep and fatigue did not differ between the groups; nevertheless, workers with children complained more of difficulty in falling asleep, had a greater dissatisfaction with the amount of sleep on weekdays, and tended to show an increasing fatigue as the week progressed. We conclude that there are social pressures in women who care for children that are in addition to those that are a general consequence of night work. These results reinforce a need for the implementation of measures that organise child care, so helping a mother who wishes to work also outside the home.  相似文献

Sleep is generally considered to be a recovery from prior wakefulness. The architecture of sleep not only depends on the duration of wakefulness but also on its quality in terms of specific experiences. In the present experiment, we studied the effects of restraint stress on sleep architecture and sleep electroencephalography (EEG) in different strains of mice (C57BL/6J and BALB/cJ). One objective was to determine if the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-promoting effects of restraint stress previously reported for rats would also occur in mice. In addition, we examined whether the effects of restraint stress on sleep are different from effects of social defeat stress, which was found to have a non-REM (NREM) sleep-promoting effect. We further measured corticosterone and prolactin levels as possible mediators of restraint stress-induced changes in sleep. Adult male C57BL/6J and BALB/cJ mice were subjected to 1 h of restraint stress in the middle of the light phase. To control for possible effects of sleep loss per se, the animals were also kept awake for 1 h by gentle handling. Restraint stress resulted in a mild increase in NREM sleep compared with baseline, but, overall, this effect was not significantly different from sleep deprivation by gentle handling. In contrast, restraint stress caused a significant increase in REM sleep compared with handling in the C57BL/6J mice but not in BALB/cJ mice. Corticosterone levels were significantly and similarly elevated after restraint in both strains, but prolactin was increased only in the C57BL/6J mice. In conclusion, this study shows that the restraint stress-induced increase in REM sleep in mice is strongly strain dependent. The concomitant increases in prolactin and REM sleep in the C57BL/6J mice, but not in BALB/cJ mice, suggest prolactin may be involved in the mechanism underlying restraint stress-induced REM sleep. Furthermore, this study confirms that different stressors differentially affect NREM and REM sleep. Whereas restraint stress promotes REM sleep in C57BL/6J mice, we previously found that in the same strain, social defeat stress promotes NREM sleep. As such, studying the consequences of specific stressful stimuli may be an important tool to unravel both the mechanism and function of different sleep stages.  相似文献

Sleep fragmentation, particularly reduced and interrupted night sleep, impairs the quality of life of older people. Strikingly similar declines in sleep quality are seen during ageing in laboratory animals, including the fruit fly Drosophila. We investigated whether reduced activity of the nutrient- and stress-sensing insulin/insulin-like growth factor (IIS)/TOR signalling network, which ameliorates ageing in diverse organisms, could rescue the sleep fragmentation of ageing Drosophila. Lowered IIS/TOR network activity improved sleep quality, with increased night sleep and day activity and reduced sleep fragmentation. Reduced TOR activity, even when started for the first time late in life, improved sleep quality. The effects of reduced IIS/TOR network activity on day and night phenotypes were mediated through distinct mechanisms: Day activity was induced by adipokinetic hormone, dFOXO, and enhanced octopaminergic signalling. In contrast, night sleep duration and consolidation were dependent on reduced S6K and dopaminergic signalling. Our findings highlight the importance of different IIS/TOR components as potential therapeutic targets for pharmacological treatment of age-related sleep fragmentation in humans.  相似文献

Adolescents usually exhibit late sleep phase and irregular sleep patterns. As a result, they do not get enough sleep and report daytime sleepiness. This condition could be aggravated in working students who have a more limited time for sleep. In this survey, we investigated the impact of evening classes and employment on the sleep patterns of adolescents. We compared female (n = 17) and male (n = 14) non-worker students to female (n = 28) and male (n = 20) worker students who attended the same high school. The volunteers (aged 17.4 years ± 11 months) answered a sleep log during a 16-day period. Worker students slept and woke up earlier, had a shorter nocturnal sleep length and a shorter daily (nocturnal plus diurnal) sleep length compared to non-working pupils. The four groups of students delayed sleep onset time on weekends, but only worker students delayed wake-up time on Sundays. The wake-up time was similar among groups on Sundays. While student workers tended to increase the sleep length in the weekends, non-working students increased it on Mondays and/or Tuesdays. The results showed that sleep schedules and sleep length were different according to the work status. Going to bed later on Saturday by the four groups of students suggests the influence of social activities, while a later wake-up time on Sundays could result from a shorter sleep length on workdays.  相似文献

Average metabolic data (O2 uptake and CO2 output) were obtained for each 3-min period during consecutive nights of normal, experimentally fragmented, and recovery sleep in a group of 12 normal young adult males. Naturally occurring arousals and awakenings resulted in a characteristic increase in metabolism on the baseline night. The placement of brief frequent experimental arousals on the following night resulted in significantly increased metabolism throughout the night and significantly decreased sleep restoration as measured by morning performance, mood, and alertness tests, even though total sleep time was minimally reduced. Metabolic variables were significantly decreased compared with baseline on the nondisturbed recovery night that followed the sleep fragmentation night. The data cannot be used to infer that increased metabolism during sleep causes nonrestorative sleep, but the direction and time course of metabolic change accompanying arousal are consistent with that hypothesis.  相似文献

Adaptation to shift-work is influenced by the way workers schedule their lives, including allocation of sleep episodes. Female workers ( n = 29) engaged at an assembly line were studied as to individual differences in sleep parameters in order to verify whether those differences could be related to the manifestation of sleep and fatigue complaints. The sample was composed of women (20-40 y) working at night from Monday to Friday. Sleep data were based on daily sleep logs which were filled out by the workers for 10 consecutive weeks. In the analyses of sleep data both diurnal episodes between consecutive night shifts and noctural sleep episodes preceding working nights were taken into account. Worker's complaints were analyzed through questions extracted from an interview form encompassing questions on fatigue associated with the work schedule and on dissatisfaction with sleep on weekdays and weekends. The analysis of diurnal episodes showed no significant correlation between the total amount of sleep per day and the total number of complaints. Nevertheless, the latter was correlated to the length of the first sleep episode on a day, which usually began in the morning. As to sleep onset times, significant correlations were not detected concerning the first diurnal episodes. The analysis of nocturnal episodes did not reveal any significant correlation between sleep parameters and complaints. Results indicate that workers whose sleep onsets were allocated to the morning and were able to sleep for many consecutive hours, tended to show less complaints, suggesting that the temporal allocation of diurnal sleep and its length are relevant in the determination of how these workers perceive fatigue and sleep quality.  相似文献

Differences in sleep patterns between workdays and days off contribute to shiftwork effects on workers' health and well-being. But regardless of shift schedules, female workers face more difficulties in fulfilling their sleep need because of housework. This study analyzes gender differences concerning sleep in days off by comparing sleep patterns in male and female nightworkers, analyzing sleep as related to the presence of children and testing the association of sleep features between workdays and days off. Male (n = 16) and female (n = 30) workers at a plastic plant, working from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., on weekdays, filled sleep logs for seven consecutive weeks. Male and female samples did not differ in length of night sleep or in total length of sleep. For both samples, sleep length/day in days off increased, but the difference was lager among females. Also important were the relations between sleep in workdays and days off, specially among women. Among female workers, the results indicated that workers with children tended to sleep less in Saturday mornings, suggesting a negative effect of motherhood on sleep not restricted to workdays. The general results indicate that sleep need on the one hand, and social factors on the other determine the actual amount of sleep.  相似文献

The aim of the investigation was to study the effects of ACTH 1-17 on both plasma cortisol and urinary 17-OHCS in health adult young males with regard to the time (clock hours) at which this polypeptide was injected. Eight healthy adults (males from 18-30 years) volunteered for the study. They were synchronized with a diurnal activity from 0700 to 0000 and a nocturnal rest. Each week, during 6 consecutive weeks (January 19 to February 25, 1980), a 3-day test was performed on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. On Sundays 3 control-tests and 3 ACTH-tests were programmed during which either saline or 100 micrograms ACTH 1-17 were injected i.m. at respectively 0700, 1400 and 2100. During each 3 day-test (72 h) the urinary excretion of 17-OHCS was determined every 4 h at fixed clock hours. In addition, on Sundays, venous blood was sampled prior to control or ACTH injections at respectively 0700, 1400, and 2100 and 20, 40, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 min thereafter. Plasma cortisol (radioimmunoassay) was determined in samples thus collected. Both conventional and cosinor methods were used for statistical analyses. A strong and statistically significant rise of plasma cortisol was observed after all of the ACTH 1-17 injections. The obtained mean response curves were observed after all of the ACTH 1-17 injections. The obtained mean response curves were similar in form and parallel. The highest plasma cortisol curve corresponded to ACTH injected at 0700, the lowest to ACTH injected at 2100. The curve corresponding to ACTH injected at 1400 went in-between. The 24-h urinary excretion of 17-OHCS after ACTH 1-17 was approximately 4 times greater than the control value when injected at 0700, approximately 3 times greater than control when injected at 1400 and only twice greater than control when injected at 2100. In terms of changes in plasma cortisol and 17-OHCS the greatest best benefit of ACTH 1-17 is achieved when this polypeptide is injected at 0700, rather than at 1400 or 2100 in diurnally active subjects.  相似文献

Adolescents are predisposed to poorer quality of sleep and experience shortened sleep durations, with these trends being more pronounced amongst Asians. Even though sleep is crucial for athletic recovery, there is a dearth of the literature on the sleep patterns of Asian adolescent athletes. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of different intensities of sports training on sleep patterns in adolescent athletes, and to describe novel sleep data and daytime sleepiness amongst Asian adolescents who were high-level athletes. Those athletes (age 14.8 ± 0.9 years) in higher-intensity sports showed significantly more deep sleep, less light sleep and waketime after sleep onset. Actigraphically determined bedtimes and waketimes were significantly delayed on weekends, when mean total sleep time was also significantly longer. There was a large effect for an increased daytime sleepiness in high-intensity sport athletes. These findings highlight the phenomenon of social jet lag in Asian adolescent student-athletes.  相似文献

Children who grow up in developing countries of the world must work to help financially support their families, and they must also attend school. We investigated the impact of work on the sleep of working vs. nonworking high school students. Twenty-seven São Paulo, Brazil, public high school students (eight male and eight female working students plus six nonworking female and five nonworking male students) 14–18 yrs of age who attended school Monday–Friday between 19:00 to 22:30 h participated. A comprehensive questionnaire about work and living conditions, health status, and diseases and their symptoms was also answered. The activity level and rest pattern (sleep at night and napping during the day) were continuously assessed by wrist actigraphy (Ambulatory Monitoring, USA). The main variables were analyzed by a two-factor ANOVA with application of the Tukey HSD test for multiple comparisons, and the length of sleep during weekdays vs. weekends was compared by Student t-test. Working students went to sleep earlier weekends [F(1,23) = 6.1; p = 0.02] and woke up earlier work days than nonworking students [F(1,23) = 17.3; p = 0.001]. The length of nighttime sleep during weekdays was shorter among all the working [F(1,23) = 16.7; p < 0.001] than all the nonworking students. The sleep duration of boys was shorter than of girls during weekends [F(1,23) = 10.8; p < 0.001]. During weekdays, the duration of napping by working and nonworking male students was shorter than nonworking female students. During weekdays, working girls took the shortest naps [F(1,23) = 5.6; p = 0.03]. The most commonly reported sleep complaint during weekdays was difficulty waking up in the morning [F(1,23) = 6.5; p = 0.02]. During weekdays, the self-perceived sleep quality of working students was worse than nonworking students [F(1,23) = 6.2; p = 0.02]. The findings of this study show that work has negative effects on the sleep of adolescents, with the possible build-up of a chronic sleep debt with potential consequent impact on quality of life and school learning.  相似文献

The oil and gas exploration and production offshore units are classified as hazardous installations. Work in these facilities is complex, confined and associated with a wide range of risks. The continuous operation is secured by various shift work patterns. The objective of this study was to evaluate how offshore drilling workers perceived shift work at high seas and its impacts on their life and working conditions. The main features of the studied offshore shift work schedules are: long time on board (14 to 28 days), extended shifts (12 hours or more per day), slow rotation (7 to 14 days in the same shift), long sequence of days on the night shift (7 to 14 days in a row) and the extra-long extended journey (18 hours) on shift change and landing days. Interviews revealed a wide range of stressors caused by the offshore shift work, as well as difficulties to conciliate work with family life. It was observed that changes of the family model, leading to role conflicts and social isolation, work in a hazardous environment, perceiving poor sleep when working at night shifts and the imbalance between the expected and actual rewards are the major stressors for the offshore drilling workers.  相似文献
