Recently, it has been reported that the aerobic/extended-idle (AEI) regime can achieve a satisfied biological phosphorus removal (BPR). Although the AEI regime has exhibited some merits, its main drawback that the extended-idle phase (e.g., 210–450 min) is much longer than the anaerobic phase (e.g., 60–120 min) performed in the aerobic/oxic (A/O) regime requires to be addressed. In this study, a new configuration of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with sludge tank halved (STH-SBR) was therefore designed. After stable operation, 96.9 ± 0.5% of total phosphorus was removed in the STH-SBR, which was higher than that in the AEI-SBR (86.9 ± 0.8%) and A/O-SBR (84.7 ± 1.3%). Further investigations showed that the biomass cultured in the STH-SBR contained more polyphosphate accumulating organisms but less glycogen accumulating organisms than that in the AEI-SBR and A/O-SBR. In the STH-SBR, the aerobic glycogen accumulation was lower than that in the A/O-SBR while the average idle phosphorus release was greater than that in the AEI-SBR. Finally, the key enzyme activities in the AEI and A/O regimes were compared for the first time, and the reasons for the AEI regime showing lower exopolyphosphatase and polyphosphate kinase activities were also discussed.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the chemical precipitation (CP) and membrane bioreactor (MBR) hybrid process for the treatment of piggery wastewater. Average removal efficiencies for BOD, COD and turbidity in CP process were 64.3%, 77.3% and 96.4%, respectively. CP process had a moderate effect on NH3–N removal (40.4%) which improved up to 98.2% mainly due to nitrification and filtration processes in MBR. The average removal efficiencies of BOD, COD and turbidity in MBR were 99.5%, 99.4% and 99.8%, respectively. Monod equation was used to explain the microbial activities in terms of specific growth rate. The specific growth rate of bacteria in aeration tank (N-batch) and anoxic tank (D-batch) were 0.013 and 0.005 d?1 with a biomass yield of 0.78 and 0.43 mg MLSS produced/mg COD utilized, respectively. Microorganisms from the N-batch and D-batch showed a low-level of nitrifying and moderate-level of denitrifying capabilities which were 1.08 mg NH3–N/(g MLVSS.h) and 2.82 mg NO3–N/(g MLVSS.h), respectively. Carbohydrates were the main component in extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) compounds that could be attached to the membrane surface easily and led to membrane biofouling. The increase of MLSS, EPS and sludge viscosity concentration, decrease of sludge floc size and incomplete chemical cleaning procedure resulted in the increase of membrane resistance. Total membrane resistance increased from 3.19 × 1012 m?1 to 5.43 × 1014 m?1.  相似文献

The effects of acetate and nitrite on the performance of sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) employing an anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) process were investigated. Three types of SBR operations were used: sodium acetate addition at the start of anoxic condition for heterotrophic denitrification (Type 1); sodium acetate addition at the start of aerobic condition for anoxic phosphate removal by denitrifying phosphate-accumulating organisms (DNPAOs) (Type 2: conventional AOA process); and nitrite addition at the start of aerobic condition for inhibition of phosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) (Type 3). A track experiment shows that Type 2 led to the best performance of SBRs among the three types. An analysis by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) revealed that nitrite addition decreased the ratio of PAOs with a decrease in phosphorus removal efficiency. The fraction of DNPAOs in Type 2 was the highest at 13%, indicating that Type 2 is suitable for the simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the AOA process.  相似文献

A mathematical model based on the simulation software AQUASIM was developed to validate an anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) process that enables simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a single reactor by adding external organic carbon to preclude excess aerobic phosphate uptake by polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and provide phosphate for denitrifying PAOs (DNPAOs). Aerobic batch tests after anaerobic phosphate release with different chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations indicated that the effect of COD concentration on the phosphate uptake preclusion could be expressed by a simple formula. The reduction factor reflecting the formula, which retards the aerobic phosphate uptake in the presence of COD, was added to the process rates of aerobic polyphosphate storage and PAOs growth in the model. The improved model, which included the reduction factor, reasonably matched the experimental result regarding aerobic phosphate uptake behavior whereas the model without it did not; thus, the former precisely predicts the AOA process behavior.  相似文献

The presence of suitable carbon sources for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) plays a key role in phosphorus removal from wastewater in urban WWTP. For wastewaters with low volatile fatty acids (VFAs) content, an external carbon addition is necessary. As methanol is the most commonly external carbon source used for denitrification it could be a priori a promising alternative, but previous attempts to use it for EBPR have failed. This study is the first successful report of methanol utilization as external carbon source for EBPR. Since a direct replacement strategy (i.e., supply of methanol as a sole carbon source to a propionic‐fed PAO‐enriched sludge) failed, a novel process was designed and implemented successfully: development of a consortium with anaerobic biomass and polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs). Methanol‐degrading acetogens were (i) selected against other anaerobic methanol degraders from an anaerobic sludge; (ii) subjected to conventional EBPR conditions (anaerobic + aerobic); and (iii) bioaugmented with PAOs. EBPR with methanol as a sole carbon source was sustained in a mid‐term basis with this procedure. Biotechnol. Bioeng. 2013; 110: 391–400. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

New technologies regarding wastewater treatment have been developed. Among these technologies, the moving bed biofilm reactor combined with membrane bioreactor (MBBR-MBR) is a recent solution alternative to conventional processes. This paper presents the results obtained from three wastewater treatment plants working in parallel. The first wastewater treatment plant consisted of a membrane bioreactor (MBR), the second one was a MBBR-MBR system containing carriers both in anoxic and aerobic zones, and the last one consisted of a MBBR-MBR system which contained carriers only in the aerobic zone. The reactors operated with a hydraulic retention time of 26.47 h. During the study, the difference between the experimental plants was not statistically significant concerning organic matter and nutrients removal. However, different tendencies regarding nutrients removal are shown by the three wastewater treatment plants. In this sense, the performances in terms of nitrogen and phosphorus removal of the MBBR-MBR system which contained carriers only in the aerobic zone (67.34 ± 11.22% and 50.65 ± 11.13%, respectively) were slightly better than those obtained from another experimental plants. As a whole, the pilot plant which consisted of a MBR showed better performance from the point of view of the kinetics of the heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass with values of μm,H = 0.00858 h−1, μm,A = 0.07646 h−1, KM = 2.37 mg O2 L−1 and KNH = 1.31 mg N L−1.  相似文献

This study investigated the contribution of microfiltration to phosphorus removal in the sequencing anoxic/anaerobic membrane bioreactor. The phosphorus content in activated sludge was fractionated by the Schmidt–Thannhauser–Schneider method. The size distribution of phosphorus in the influent was analyzed to estimate the portion of particulate phosphorus rejected physically by the 0.2 μm microfiltration. The result was that along with the high removal of phosphorus (83%) the phosphorus content of activated sludge was measured as 58.66 mgP/gVSS corresponding to 5.87% on dry weight basis. About 9% of total phosphorus was chemically precipitated phosphates while 56% was stored inside the microbial cell by activity of PAOs, and 35% was the sum of minor intracellular compositions and the particulate residuals, which could be rejected completely by the microfiltration. The biological activity is the dominant way of phosphorus removal in the process. However, the microfiltration also contributed significantly to phosphorus removal by retaining the particulate phosphorus inside the system.  相似文献

A new chemically enhanced primary sedimentation (CEPS) and sludge fermentation process are developed for improved nutrient removal, energy saving and resource recovery in municipal wastewater treatment. The FeCl3-based CEPS with a dosage of 20 mg-Fe/L can remove 75.6% of organic pollutants and 99.3% of PO4-P on average from wastewater. Under natural fermentation conditions, the CEPS sludge undergoes effective hydrolysis and acidogenesis to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and release phosphate as valuable resources. By using CEPS, around 27% of the organic carbon in wastewater influent can be recovered via sludge fermentation, mainly in the form of VFAs, and about 23% of phosphorus recovered for making vivianite fertilizer. In comparison, both the organic and phosphorus recovery ratios from wastewater are under 10% with conventional primary sedimentation and sludge fermentation. CEPS combined with side-stream sludge fermentation can be readily applied in new treatment plants or in a retrofit of existing treatment systems.  相似文献

Two laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were operated for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) in alternating anaerobic-aerobic or alternating anaerobic-anoxic modes, respectively. Polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) were enriched in the anaerobic-aerobic SBR and denitrifying PAOs (DPAOs) were enriched in the anaerobic-aerobic SBR. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) demonstrated that the well-known PAO, "Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis" was abundant in both SBRs, and post-FISH chemical staining with 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindol (DAPI) confirmed that they accumulated polyphosphate. When the anaerobic-anoxic SBR enriched for DPAOs was converted to anaerobic-aerobic operation, aerobic uptake of phosphorus by the resident microbial community occurred immediately. However, when the anaerobic-aerobic SBR enriched for PAOs was exposed to one cycle with anoxic rather than aerobic conditions, a 5-h lag period elapsed before phosphorus uptake proceeded. This anoxic phosphorus-uptake lag phase was not observed in the subsequent anaerobic-aerobic cycle. These results demonstrate that the PAOs that dominated the anaerobic-aerobic SBR biomass were the same organisms as the DPAOs enriched under anaerobic-anoxic conditions.  相似文献

Membrane bioreactors (MBR) technology for wastewater offers many advantages over conventional technologies such as high effluent quality, less footprint and others. The main disadvantage of membrane bioreactors (MBR) is related to membrane fouling, which is mainly caused by extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP). This research studied EPS and SMP dynamics at different heights of a submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (SAMBR). The SAMBR was operated under two organic loading rates (OLR) (0.79 and 1.56 kg/m3 d) and was fed with synthetic wastewater with glucose as the carbon source. The results showed percentages of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal above 95% and the highest COD removal rates were observed at the bottom of the reactor (>83%) for both OLR. The EPS showed a stratification with highest quantities in the supernatant. For the SMP the highest concentration was in the bottom of SAMBR where utilization predominated associated products whereas in the SAMBR supernatant predominated biomass associated products. The OLR change led to a significant increase in SMP accumulation but not in EPS. These facts showed that EPS and SMP dynamic in the SAMBR seemed to be mainly influenced by biological activity, total suspended solids concentration and substrate composition.  相似文献

In order to improve the water quality in shrimp aquaculture operated under low-salinity conditions, a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was tested for treatment of the wastewater. This water from the backwash of a single-bead filter from the Waddell Mariculture Center, South Carolina, contained high concentrations of carbon and nitrogen and was successfully treated using the SBR. By operating the reactor sequentially in aerobic, anoxic and aerobic modes, nitrification and denitrification were achieved, as well as removal of carbon. Specifically, the initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration of 1201 mg l−1 was reduced to 32 mg l−1 within 8 days of reactor operation. Ammonia in the sludge was nitrified within 3 days. The denitrification of nitrate was achieved by the anoxic process and total removal of nitrate was observed.  相似文献

A pilot-scale vertical submerged membrane bioreactor (VSMBR) with anoxic and oxic zones in one reactor was operated in an attempt to reduce the problems concerning effective removal of organic matter and nutrients from municipal wastewater. Source water with total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD)/total nitrogen (TN) ratio of 5.5 was treated at various temperatures (13–25 °C) over an interval of about 1 year. As a result, total suspended solid (TSS) and TCOD were removed by 100% and higher than 98%, respectively. Moreover, the average removal efficiencies of TN and total phosphorus (TP) were found to be 74% and 78% at 8 h-hydraulic retention time (HRT) and 60-days sludge retention time (SRT). Under these conditions, the specific removal rates (SRR) of TN and TP were found to be 0.093 kg N m−3 day−1 and 0.008 kg P m−3 day−1, and the daily production of excess sludge (DPES), 0.058 kg TSS day−1.  相似文献

This study explored the influence of sludge retention time (SRT) on tolerance of copper invasion for polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) in an enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). The experimental data showed the anaerobic polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) storage for the sludge at 10d SRT was less influenced by copper invasion than those at 5d and 15d SRTs. The reaction of PAOs aerobically taking up phosphate for the sludge at 5d or 15d SRT almost ceased at 2 mg Cu L−1, whereas PAOs in the sludge at 10d SRT retained half of the ability to take up phosphate. Both the PHAs degradation and synthesis rates decreased with increasing copper concentration, regardless of the SRTs. However, the copper inhibition of the former was greater than that of the later.  相似文献

While an aeration tank in an activated sludge process is often operated with high dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration to ensure organic degradation and nitrification, it may be operated at low DO concentration to reduce energy consumption and achieve desired denitrification. The ASM1 (Activated Sludge Model No. 1) can be used to describe the activated sludge process if the nitrification and denitrification occur either during different phases or in different tanks, but it may encounter problems in simulating the denitrification phenomenon caused by low DO concentration in the aeration tank. In the present work, we developed a model integrating the ASM1 kinetics and a biofloc model to account for the actual anoxic and aerobic rates. Oxygen was assumed the only substrate of both bio-kinetically and flux limiting in the flocs and its dispersion coefficient was estimated as 1.2 × 10−4 m2 day−1 by using a set of measured effluent qualities of a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operating at low DO concentration (∼0.80 mg L−1) for 60 days. Simulation studies predicted the optimal DO level of 0.36 mg L−1 which would lead to minimum total nitrogen of 15.7 mg N L−1 and also showed the insignificance of the addition of carbon source for nitrogen removal for the operation under study. The developed model may be helpful for process engineers to predict the plant behaviors under various configurations or operating strategies.  相似文献

Release of nitrogen and phosphorus into effluent of activated sludge process was reported in the recent researches of sludge reduction induced by oligochaetes. In this study, batch test and radioisotope 32P tracer test were therefore carried out to further investigate nutrients release and phosphorus distribution among supernatant, sludge and worm during predation of oligochaetes on sludge. Results showed that more nutrients release into supernatant occurred in the tests of worms with sterilized sludge than that of worms with activated sludge, and release of nitrogen and phosphorus was few in the tests of worms with activated sludge. Statistical analysis showed that no factor was significantly correlated with phosphorus concentration in the supernatant, but time and worm were only two factors significantly affecting total nitrogen (TN) concentration in the supernatant in the test of worms with activated sludge. Through test of radioisotope 32P tracer, 32P mainly distributed in activated sludge and supernatant, and more release of 32P into the supernatant occurred in the test of sludge with worms. After 24 h, 32P concentration of supernatant in the test of sludge with worms was 9% higher than that in the test of sludge without worms, and 32P concentration of worm increased by 2.7%. Additionally, the release rate of phosphorus into supernatant caused by worm's predation on activated sludge was 0.1211 mgTP/gWorm (wet weight) h.  相似文献

An anoxic/oxic step feeding process was improved to enhance nutrient removal by reconfiguring the process into (1) anaerobic/anoxic/oxic step feeding process or (2) modified University of Capetown (UCT) step feeding process. Enhanced nitrogen and phosphorus removal and optimized organics utilization were obtained simultaneously in the modified UCT type with both internal and sludge recycle ratios of 75% as well as anaerobic/anoxic/oxic volume ratio of 1:3:6. Specifically, the UCT configuration and optimized operational conditions lead to the enrichment of denitrifying phosphorus removal microorganisms and achieved improved anaerobic P-release and anoxic P-uptake activities, which were beneficial to the denitrifying phosphorus removal activities and removal efficiencies. Due to high mixed liquor suspended solid and uneven distributed dissolved oxygen, 35% of total nitrogen was eliminated through simultaneous nitrification and denitrification process in aerobic zones. Moreover, 62 ± 6% of influent chemical oxygen demands was involved in the denitrification or phosphorus release processes.  相似文献

A shortcut biological nitrogen removal (SBNR) process converts ammonium directly through nitrite to nitrogen gas, thus requiring less aeration and carbon. We evaluated a hybrid SBNR (HSBNR) reactor containing an anoxic tank followed by an aerobic tank and a settling tank. The aerobic tank was filled with polyvinyl alcohol sponge media (20%, v/v) to attach and retain ammonium oxidizers. Two configurations of the HSBNR reactor were tested for treating a wastewater with high strength ammonium and organic electron donor. The HSNBR reactors accumulated nitrite stably for 1.5 years and maintained a high free ammonia (FA) concentration (20–25 mg/L) and a low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration (<1 mg/L) in the aerobic tank. Apparently, the biofilm carriers increased the solids retention time (SRT) for ammonium oxidizers, while high FA and low DO selected against nitrite oxidizers and promoted direct denitrification of nitrite in the aerobic tank. The significant amount of chemical oxygen demand (COD) was removed by shortcut denitrification of nitrite in the anoxic tank.  相似文献

For the prevention of excess sludge production from a membrane bioreactor (MBR), an ultrasonic cell disintegration process was incorporated. The results of this study showed that excess sludge production could be prevented using an ultrasound hybrid (MBR-US) system at an organic loading of around 0.91 kg BOD5/m3 per day. Under the same organic loading rate, the mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) of MBR-US system was maintained at 7000–8000 mg/l while the MLSS of a conventional MBR increased from 7000 to 13,700 mg/l during the experimental period. While sludge production was completely prevented, the effluent quality of the MBR-US system slightly deteriorated. The additional organic loading caused by disintegrated sludge return was considered to be a reason. With sonication the volume of the average particle size of the sludge in the aeration tank decreased from 132 to 95 μm. In the MBR-US system, around 25–30% of total phosphorus removal was achieved without sludge removal from the aeration tank.  相似文献

A continuous-flow anaerobic–anoxic (A2) activated sludge system was operated for efficient enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). Because of the system configuration with no aeration zones, phosphorus (P) uptake takes place solely under anoxic conditions with simultaneous denitrification. Basic operating conditions, namely biomass concentration, influent carbon to phosphorus ratio and anaerobic retention time were chosen as variables in order to assess their impact on the system performance. The experimental results indicated that maintenance of biomass concentration above 2,500 mg MLVSS/L resulted in the complete phosphate removal from the influent (i.e. 15 mg PO4 3−-P/L) for a mean hydraulic residence time (HRT) of 15 h. Additionally, by increasing the influent COD/P ratio from 10 to 20 g/g, the system P removal efficiency was improved although the experimental results indicated a possible enhancement of the competition between phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) and other microbial populations without phosphorus uptake ability. Moreover, because of the use of acetate (i.e. easily biodegradable substrate) as the sole carbon source in the system feed, application of anaerobic retention times greater than 2 h resulted in no significant release of additional P in the anaerobic zone and no further amelioration of the system P removal efficiency. The application of anoxic P removal resulted in more than 50% reduction of the organic carbon necessitated for nitrogen and phosphorus removal when compared to a conventional EBPR system incorporating aerobic phosphorus removal.  相似文献
