Year-round comprehensive study of fouling of the cooling system of the Vladivostok Heat Power Plant (VTETs-2) was carried out. The seasonal dynamics of pelagic larvae, their settling, and succession of fouling communities on test plates were analyzed in the intake scoop (Ussuriiskii Bay) and in Zolotoi Rog Bay (Amurskii Bay), which are subjected to thermal pollution by dump waters of VTETs-2. It was shown that the barnacles Balanus crenatus, B. improvisus, and B. amphitrite; bivalves Mytilus trossulus and Crassostrea gigas; polychaetes Polydora limicola and Hydroides ezoensis; and ascidians Molgula manhattensis and Diplosoma mitsukurii were background species in the plate fouling. A high correlation between the seasonal dynamics of larval plankton and the settling of spat was recorded only in some species. The total larval density in Zolotoi Rog Bay, despite the critical level of its pollution, more than 4 times exceeded that of the relatively clean Ussuriiskii Bay. The number of recorded species on the test plates was 2 times higher in Ussuriiskii Bay than in Zolotoi Rog Bay; however, the biomass and population density of settled spat of the dominant forms was several times lower in Ussuriiskii Bay. Thanks to thermal pollution, Zolotoi Rog Bay is an intermediate step for the introduction and acclimation of tropical species, such as B. amphitrite and M. manhattensis, brought by long-distance vessels. Measures aimed at the prevention of intensive settling of mytilids in the cooling system of VTETs-2 are suggested.  相似文献

The distribution and seasonal dynamics of Centropages abdominalis and C. tenuiremis (Copepoda) in Amursky Bay (Sea of Japan) were studied from May through November 1991. C. abdominalis occurred in plankton from May through August and in November, with a peak density of more than 40000 specimens/m3 in June, at a temperature of 15–18°C. C. tenuiremis occurred from late June through November, with a maximum total density of 6900 specimens/m3 in August, at 23°C. During the observation period, the distribution of species in the bay was irregular due to the hydrological regime and sanitary conditions of water.  相似文献

The fouling structure of the Japanese scallop was studied in Amursky Bay near Vladivostok. Fifty-six species of hydrobionts were identified. Barnacles prevailed in biomass and population density, and algae dominated in the number of species. The change in the dominant barnacle species observed in the fouling was caused, apparently, by the reproductive strategy of Hesperibalanus hesperius, which is more labile than that of Balanus rostratus, and by the anthropogenic impact on the ecosystem of the bay. The fouling was marked by bivalve and sea anemone species resistant to silting and pollution. The main groups of epibionts were classified as suspension feeders, and as selective detritophages that are characterized by their type of feeding. The total infestation of shells of the Japanese scallop by boring polychaetes and the depressed condition of most mollusks and algae evidenced the unfavorable ecological situation in the area surveyed.  相似文献

Several species of Kappaphycus were intentionally introduced into Kane’ohe Bay, Hawai’i in the 1970s. Subsequent research has demonstrated that these algae have spread rapidly throughout the bay and can be found in a variety of reef habitats overgrowing and killing corals. This study was conducted to (a) quantify Kappaphycus spp. abundance both spatially and temporally, and (b) investigate control options including manual removal and the use of biocontrol agents. Kappaphycus spp. distribution has increased in the bay over the period between surveys conducted in 1999 and 2002, with variation among reefs. The biomass of Kappaphycus spp. removed, and the amount of time required to manually remove them from the reef varied with habitat type, but in all cases amounted to at least 10 kg/m2 requiring almost 2 person-hours to clear 1 m2. Re-growth of the algae following their removal was rapid at most sites, likely due to the experimentally demonstrated ability of the algae to re-grow from minute attachment points and the low palatability of the algae to native herbivorous fishes. The native sea urchin, Tripneustes gratilla, reduced the biomass of Kappaphycus spp. in small experimental enclosures and may be a useful biocontrol agent. Because Kappaphycus spp. are still spreading in Kane’ohe Bay and can overgrow over 50% cover on some reefs, we recommend that rapid management action be taken to prevent further damage and spread to other Hawaiian coral reefs.  相似文献

The seasonal population size of planktonic larvae of mollusks of the soft-shell clam genus Mya were studied in Vostok Bay. The larvae occurred in plankton from the first third of June to early September. The highest density of larvae (279.7 ± 98.7 specimens/m3) was found in late June. In early July, larval numbers decreased sharply, and at the end of the first third of July, only single Mya larvae were found in the plankton. Another increase in larval population was observed in early and late August. The larvae varied in length from 175 to 325 m in June–July and from 150 to 250 m in August. It is likely that the larvae of two species of Mya, M. arenaria and M. uzenensis, are present in the plankton of Vostok Bay.  相似文献

Results of a seasonal study on biomass in an infralittoral population of Iridaea cordata from Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea, Antarctica) are reported. Thalli were collected during the IX Italian Antarctic Expedition (austral summer 1993–94). The population studied is that living at depths of 4 to 6 m, where the highest density of plants occurred. The highest value of biomass (wet weight 3440 g m–2) was found at the beginning of summer. In that period 72.5% of biomass was from 128 specimens belonging to weight classes 8 (>16 to 32 g) to 10 (>64 g), corresponding to 13.4% of the population in numbers. Small (<1 g) and medium (1 to 8 g) specimens provided the remaining biomass of 5% and 22.5%, respectively. During the month of January, the number of heavy specimens decreased. At the end of that month biomass reached a minimum of 2225 g m–2. In February the biomass increased to 3169 g m –2, 72% of which was from 120 specimens belonging to weight classes 7 (>8 to 16 g) to 9 (>32 to 64 g), which numerically represented 18.5% of the population. Data showed that biomass depended mainly on the presence of large heavy specimens, even though they were always few in number. Moreover, the occurrence of such large thalli at the beginning of summer suggests that Iridaea cordata continues to grow during the long antarctic winter.  相似文献

Limnoperna fortunei (Bivalvia, Mitylidae) was introduced into South America in 1991 in the La Plata River (Argentina). It arrived in the ballast water of ships coming from Asia, where this species is native. It was first observed in 1998 in the Paraguay River. Limnoperna was introduced into the Pantanal region as hull fouling of vessels using the Paraguay–Parana waterway. This study describes how L. fortunei came to the Pantanal region, and provides details of its occurrence, density, and impacts. From 1999 to 2002, observations and sampling on natural and artificial substrates in the Paraguay River were made. Some aspects of the spread and impacts, based on local community information, were also analyzed. On artificial substrate the density reached 523.8 individuals m−2 and on natural substrate (rocks), up to 10,000 individuals m−2 were found. The densities observed were quite low compared to those found in Southern Brazil, where values up to 100,000 individuals m−2 have been recorded in the last 3 years. In the Paraguay River, the population density of L. fortunei can be negatively impacted by periodic low levels of dissolved oxygen and decreases in pH to between 5 and 6. Such conditions are frequently present during the periodic flooding or inundation of this area. Under these conditions, a high mortality of L. fortunei was recorded in March of 2002, on both natural and artificial substrates. Despite low densities, L. fortunei can colonize water cooling systems of boats, obstructing water circulation and causing motor overheating. The ecology of the six-lined prickleback, Ernogrammus hexagrammus (Stichaeidae: Perciformes), a fish with nocturnal activity, has been studied in Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan. It is found that during the day the fish hide themselves in refuges between stones. In the evening they move to sandy areas for foraging. The mean distance between neighboring specimens in the night time equals 2.77 m; the density and biomass of the fish averages 0.12 specimens/m2 and 3.85 g/m2, respectively. Polychaetes and mysids constitute the bulk of the food by weight and the occurrence frequency, respectively. The morphological adaptations to inhabit two different biotopes consist of well-developed seismosensory and olfactory systems, the serpentine body shape, and the cryptic coloration. Behavioral adaptations include solitary behavior with a low level of contacts and aggression.  相似文献

The occurrence of the solitary ascidian Ciona savignyi Herdman, 1882 in Vostok Bay (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan) was first documented in 2004. Adult specimens occurred in fouling communities of floating docks in Gaidamak Bay and on different anthropogenic substrates. The introduction of this ascidian into Vostok Bay is attributable to fishing ships which regularly frequent ports of Japan and to favorable environmental conditions (temperature and salinity of seawater).  相似文献

The biodiversity and spatial distribution of macrofauna biomass are studied for 12 sites of stonesand littoral in the Neva Estuary in 2002–2005. The highest biodiversity has been observed for chironomids and oligochaetes in the Neva Bay (36% and 24% of total species number) and in the eastern Gulf of Finland (33% and 23%). Amphipods (≤89%), molluscs (≤61%), and chironomids (≤37%) dominate by biomass. The biomass spatial distribution vary dramatically from 9 to 37 g m−2 in the freshwater Neva Bay and from 1 to 68 g m−2 for the other Neva Estuary areas. The bottom fauna biomass in the Neva Bay is significantly lower than in the 1980–1990’s and constitutes 20–50% of the biomass previously observed. We explain such a significant decrease by a reduction of the insects and aborigine crustaceans Gammarus lacustris Sars and Asellus aquaticus L. The invasive amphipod species Gmelinoides fasciatus (Stebbing) dominated by biomass for the study period (3.8–15.6 g m−2, or >30% of total macrozoobenthos biomass).  相似文献

We have classified fouling communities developing on artificial substrates of mussel mariculture plants in Kandalakshskii Bay of the White Sea. Several major types of fouling have been distinguished: mussel fouling; fouling similar to the epifauna of the benthos biocenosis of Laminaria saccharinadominated by the ascidian Styela rusticaor sponges Halichondria paniceaand Halisarca dujardini; young fouling developed by algae and the ascidians of the genus Molgula; and ecotone communities in-between these types of fouling. The impact of spruce spider mite (SSM) (Oligonychus ununguis Jacobi, Acari: Tetranychidae) feeding on needle compounds of young dwarf white spruce (Picea glauca ‘Conica’), important in defence against pests, was determined. It was shown that the direction and intensity of changes in chemical composition of spruce needles was related to the density of spruce spider mite population. Relative to uninfested controls, needles of trees infested by 2–6 mites per 5 cm oftwig during 8 weeks contained markedly higher concentration of soluble proteins, total phenolics and essential oil volatiles (linalool, β-phellandrene, β-myrcene, δ-3-carene, p-cymene, limonene, α-pinene, β-pinene, borneol, methyl salicylate, geranyl acetate). Feeding of a three times larger population of mites (18 specimens per 5 cm of twig) caused either reduction of concentration of those compounds, or no significant difference in comparison to the control. The results of our study show that O. ununguis at relatively low density (not exceeding 2–6 specimens per 5 cm of twig per 8 weeks) stimulates even susceptible host-plant to alter metabolism, however induced responses are suppressed as mite density increases. Findings are discussed in relation to the importance of changes in the concentration of needle primary and secondary metabolites to white spruce defence against O. ununguis.  相似文献

Bledius (Elbidus) bicornis (Germ.) and B. (Eucerotobledius) furcatus (Oliv.) (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) are the most important burrowing species in the emergent areas and shores in the athalassic lake of Fuente de Piedra (Málaga, S. of Spain). A first estimate of the importance of these organisms in this system is presented. These insects kick out sediment during their burrowing activity, which accumulates on the surface near the burrows as tumuli which can be easily eroded. The lake perimeter (17 km) is densely colonized (usual densities from 1700 to 2500 ind m−2). The amount of granulated material that can be potentially kicked out was 46.22 g dry wt m−2 day−1. At the same time, the material that constitutes the tumuli shows different characteristics from the compact ground below the surface. Thus, it is relatively enriched with organic matter (6.15 g per square meter), soluble phosphate (406.5 μg m−2) and ammonium (4856 μg m−2), whereas it lacks nitrate. Results of a transect from uninhabited areas to zones of maximum population density also show a similarity between the higher ground level of ammonium and phosphate concentrations and population density.  相似文献

We present here a 4-year dataset (2001–2004) on the spatial and temporal patterns of aboveground net primary production (ANPP) by dominant primary producers (sawgrass, periphyton, mangroves, and seagrasses) along two transects in the oligotrophic Florida Everglades coastal landscape. The 17 sites of the Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research (FCE LTER) program are located along fresh-estuarine gradients in Shark River Slough (SRS) and Taylor River/C-111/Florida Bay (TS/Ph) basins that drain the western and southern Everglades, respectively. Within the SRS basin, sawgrass and periphyton ANPP did not differ significantly among sites but mangrove ANPP was highest at the site nearest the Gulf of Mexico. In the southern Everglades transect, there was a productivity peak in sawgrass and periphyton at the upper estuarine ecotone within Taylor River but no trends were observed in the C-111 Basin for either primary producer. Over the 4 years, average sawgrass ANPP in both basins ranged from 255 to 606 g m−2 year−1. Average periphyton productivity at SRS and TS/Ph was 17–68 g C m−2 year−1 and 342–10371 g C m−2 year−1, respectively. Mangrove productivity ranged from 340 g m−2 year−1 at Taylor River to 2208 g m−2 year−1 at the lower estuarine Shark River site. Average Thalassia testudinum productivity ranged from 91 to 396 g m−2 year−1 and was 4-fold greater at the site nearest the Gulf of Mexico than in eastern Florida Bay. There were no differences in periphyton productivity at Florida Bay. Interannual comparisons revealed no significant differences within each primary producer at either SRS or TS/Ph with the exception of sawgrass at SRS and the C−111 Basin. Future research will address difficulties in assessing and comparing ANPP of different primary producers along gradients as well as the significance of belowground production to the total productivity of this ecosystem.  相似文献

The species composition, seasonal dynamic of biomass and density of zooplankton were studied in two arms with a different hydrological regime. The samples were collected in two hydrologically different years — extremely wet in 2002 and extremely dry in 2003. In the first arm the mean annual chlorophyll-a concentration was 31.6 μg L−1 (2002) and relatively high 64.7 μg L−1 during 2003. Mean seasonal zooplankton wet biomass was low and varied: 11.6 g m−3 (2002) and 2.93 g m−3 (2003). Total zooplankton density was high (7,370 N L−1) in 2002, when rotifers predominated in an open water zone and contributed up to 81% of the total zooplankton biomass and 83% of the total zooplankton density. In medial and littoral zone, in total, 22 cladoceran and 15 copepod species were identified. In the second arm the mean annual concentration of chlorophyll-a was high: 74.8 μg L−1 (2002) and 61.4 μg L−1 (2003). Mean seasonal zooplankton wet biomass varied from 92.5 g m−3 (2002) and 44.10 g m−3 (2003). In 2002 the planktonic crustaceans predominated; their mean biomass was 87.1 g m−3 and B. longirostris formed more than 91% of this value. In 2003, the zooplankton density was high (15,687 N L−1), when rotifers contributed up to 94% of this value. The boom of rotifers (58,740 N L−1) was recorded in June 2003. In total, 45 cladoceran and 14 copepod species were recorded in the medial and littoral zones. During observation we concluded that the structure of zooplankton, particularly species composition, abundance, biomass and seasonal dynamics are affected by the fluctuation of water levels in the arms of the rivers’ inundation areas. We examined the species composition of red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) fouling communities in Dolgaya Bay, a small fjord of the Barents Sea, in August 2005 and 2006. In total, there were 13 species observed on 301 crabs collected from water depths of 5–90 m. Barnacles (Balanus crenatus; prevalence 42.9%) and blue mussels (Mytilus edulis; 11.6%) were the most common epibionts, while amphipods (Ischyrocerus commensalis) were the most common symbionts (28.6%). Infestation rates in Dolgaya Bay were different from those in an “open” area of the Barents Sea (Dalnezelenetskaya Bay), probably due to differences in hydrodynamic conditions. Differences in infestation prevalence and intensity were detected neither between male and female crabs nor between crabs collected at 5–35 m versus 90 m depths. Prevalence of common fouling species increased with host size. Amphipods I. commensalis colonized the carapace and limbs in Dolgaya Bay less frequently than in Dalnezelenetskaya Bay, probably due to interspecific competition with barnacles occupying the dorsal parts of the host. Juvenile barnacles and mussels dominated the fouling communities on the crabs. The age of barnacles did not exceed 2–4 months. However, the presence of 4-year-old mussels suggests that these older mollusks have been directly transferred from mussel beds to the hosts. Our results indicate that colonization by epibionts and symbionts is generally not disadvantageous for the crab hosts, except for some possible negative impacts of amphipods occupying the gills.  相似文献

The non-indigenous seagrass Zostera japonica Ascher. & Graeb. (dwarf eelgrass) was first identified in central Oregon (USA) estuaries about 30 years ago. The autecology of this species is poorly described at the southern end of its non-native range although several process oriented studies have been conducted. I examined the production ecology of Z. japonica in the Yaquina Bay estuary. Strong seasonal patterns in light and temperature appeared to control the seasonal variations in biomass and growth. Above- and below-ground biomass ranged between 40–100 and 70–170 gdw m−2 respectively and seasonal changes in the root:shoot ratio were controlled by above-ground biomass dynamics. Shoot density ranged between 4000 and 11 000 shts m−2. Areal leaf growth ranged between 0.1 and 1.7 gdw m−2 d−1 and annual production was about 314 ± 60 gdw m−2 y−1 (mean ± SD). Nutrients were not limiting in this system as a result of coastal upwelling and watershed inputs. The Z. japonica population studied in Oregon exhibited different patterns of persistence, phenology and flowering intensity relative to other populations along its native and non-native range. These differences suggest that management policies developed for one site may not be appropriate for other sites. The data presented here greatly expands our knowledge base on Z. japonica and provides insight to the processes controlling the dynamics and spread of this non-indigenous seagrass. During the summer of 2002, sampling was carried out in the Lima estuary in order to compare the pattern of the macrobenthic community’s distribution in relation to physical and chemical variables. A total of 54 macrobenthic taxa were identified. Abundance, biomass and specific diversity varied among the twenty stations. Abundance ranged from 212 to 9856 ind./m2, with an average of 1581 ind./m2. Abra alba presented the highest density corresponding to 39.1% of the total specimens gathered, followed by Hediste diversicolor with 31.5%. Biomass ranged from 0.12 to 264.62 g AFDW/m2, with an average of 17.58 g AFDW/m2. Cerastoderma edule and A. alba were the species with a clear predominance in the total biomass, contributing 75.3 and 13.8%, respectively. The multivariate techniques used revealed a macrobenthic community with five distinct groups, particularly related to the sedimentological characteristics and salinity. These results demonstrated significant differences in macrobenthic assemblage’s composition along an estuarine gradient. For the first time the presence of the nonindigenous invasive species Corbicula fluminea was described in this estuary.  相似文献

The recovery process of aSasa tsuboiana population after a mass flowering and death in 1977 was investigated by 15 years of observation in the Hira Mountains, Kinki district, western Japan. Seed production was high (6600–13 800 seeds m−2 inSasa plots and 3900 seeds m−2 in a forest plot) but emergent seedling density was low (14–21 seedlings m−2), probably because of seed predation byMicrotus montebelli occurring between seed shedding and the next spring. The seedling density had decreased further by the next year and theS. tsuboiana population recovered from only a limited number of seedlings. In spite of such a low initial density, theS. tsuboiana population was able to regenerate successfully and attained the previous full stand height in 7–16 years.Miscantbus sinensis invaded and delayed the recovery ofS. tsuboiana in one plot, butS. tsuboiana became dominant as it caught up with the height ofM. sinensis. Seedling growth patterns, such as frequent tillering, the onset of rhizome extension in the early stage of seedling growth and frequent culm production from rhizomes, played important roles in the successful regeneration ofS. tsuboiana.  相似文献

The survivorship of a monocarpic bamboo grass,Sasa kurilensis, during the early regeneration process was documented by a 10 year observation of the seedling population after mass flowering in the Hakkoda Mountains, northern Japan. Three phases were recognized: the establishment, density-stable and thinning phases. The mortality of the densely germinated seedlings (932.9m−2 in aBetula ermanii forest and 1222.3 m−2 in aSasa grassland) was high, up to 0.5 year−1, in the establishment phase (0–1 year after germination) and low in the density-stable phase (1–3 years after germination). After reaching full density state, the seedling population showed a nearly constant mortality of 0.18 year−1 due to self-thinning (the thinning phase). The high C/F ratio presumably caused suppressed seedlings to die. Recovery of theS. kurilensis population was estimated to requireca 20 years in the study plots, judging from the height growth and the decrease in culm density of the seedling population. The illuminance on the ground was higher in the flowered population than in the unflowered one for 5 years after mass death. The duration of high ground illuminance is an important factor affecting the dynamics of forests withSasa undergrowth, because tree seedlings need to establish under high ground illuminance for the successful regeneration of the forests.  相似文献
