We examined the effects of hibernation and fasting on intestinal glucose and proline uptake rates of chuckwallas (Sauromalus obesus) and on the size of organs directly or indirectly related to digestion. These lizards show geographic variation in body size and growth rate that parallels an elevational gradient in our study area. At low elevation, food is available only for a short time during the spring; at high elevation, food may also be available during summer and autumn, depending on rainfall conditions in a given year. We hypothesized that low-elevation lizards with a short season of food availability would show more pronounced regulation of gut size and function than high-elevation lizards with prolonged or bimodal food availability. Hibernating lizards from both elevations had significantly lower uptake rates per milligram intestine for both nutrients, and lower small intestine mass, than active lizards. The combination of these two effects resulted in significantly lower total nutrient uptake in hibernating animals compared to active ones. The stomach, large intestine, and cecum showed lower masses in hibernators, but these results were not statistically significant. The heart, kidney, and liver showed no difference in mass between hibernating and nonhibernating animals. Lizards from low elevations with a short growing season also showed a greater increase in both uptake rates and small intestine mass from the hibernating to the active state, compared to those from high elevations with longer growing seasons. Thus, compared to those from long growing season areas, lizards from short growing season areas have equal uptake capacity during hibernation but much higher uptake capacity while active and feeding. This pattern of regulation of gut function may or may not be an adaptive response, but it is consistent with variation in life-history characteristics among populations. In areas with a short season, those lizards that can extract nutrients quickly and then reduce the gut will be favored; in areas where food may be available later in the year, those lizards that maintain an active gut would be favored. While other researchers have found much greater magnitudes of gut regulation when making comparisons among species, we find the different patterns of change in gut function between different populations of chuckwallas particularly intriguing because they occur within a single species.  相似文献

Soil macrofauna and nitrogen on a sub-Antarctic island   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary The densities, diets and habitat preferences of the soil macrofaunal species on sub-Antarctic Marion Island (47°S, 38°E) are described. Their role in N cycling on the island is assessed, using a mire-grassland community as an example. Primary production on the island is high and this leads to a substantial annual requirement of nutrients by the vegetation. This requirement must almost wholly be met by mineralization of nutrient reserves in the organic matter. Rates of peat nitrogen mineralization mediated by microorganisms alone are much too low to account for rates of N uptake by the vegetation. Although soil macroinvertebrates, and bacteria represent a very small fraction of the total N pool, their interaction accounts for most of the peat N mineralization, as indicated by the amounts of inorganic N released into solution in microcosms. Extrapolation of the microcosm results shows that the soil macrofauna (mainly earthworms) stimulate the release of enough N from the mire-grassland peat to account for maximum N mineralization rates calculated from temporal changes in peat inorganic N levels and plant uptake during the most active part of the growing season. Considering that large numbers of mesoand microinvertebrates occur and must also contribute to nutrient mineralization, the soil faunal component is clearly of crucial importance to nutrient cycling on Marion Island. This is probably true of all sub-Antarctic islands.  相似文献

The effects of season and community composition as generated by livestock herbivory of differing intensity on seed species preference by Pogonomyrmex barbatus (F. Smith) were studied in a semiarid savanna on the Edward's Plateau, TX. Seasonal differences in nutrient requirements of the colony could lead to differential preferences for seeds harvested in spring and fall. Field cafeteria studies were conducted to test the hypothesis that late successional species, with their high nutrient content, would be chosen regardless of grazing intensity or season. Commercial seeds of known nutrient content were used to test the hypothesis that high protein levels would be chosen in spring and high carbohydrate levels in the fall. Naturally occurring seeds were differentially harvested and some were preferred regardless of relative availability. Total seed harvest in cafeteria experiments was higher in spring than in fall. Commercial seeds were harvested equally among treatments within a season; thus, nutrient selection was indistinguishable. Preference for native species was significantly different in both seasons but was influenced by a significant interaction with grazing treatments. Bouteloua curtipendula, a late successional mid-grass, was harvested significantly more in the spring than the fall and at higher rates in the heavily grazed treatment, rejecting the hypothesis that they would be chosen regardless of treatment or season. Seed preference for late successional grasses within heavily grazed communities may slow succession after grazing. During disturbance recovery, late successional species may be reduced by forager preference and rates of spring harvest.  相似文献

An important life history trait of macroalgae species is the physiological ability to cope with nutrient limiting conditions, which seasonally occur in temperate coasts while other environmental factors are adequate (e.g., sufficient light). Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) uptake kinetics and field growth limitation were investigated in the perennial Bifucaria bifurcata, the opportunistic Ulva intestinalis, and the summer-annual Nemalion helminthoides from Asturian coasts (N Spain). We performed 4 nutrient uptake experiments (ammonium, nitrate, nitrate + ammonium, and phosphate) and monitored the growth and N content of field individuals in the presence/absence of artificial nutrient supply to assess potential growth limitations. B. bifurcata was not actively growing during summer thus low nutrient demands probably relied on stored pools and/or the low background nutrient levels in seawater, as generally observed for perennials. Corresponding N content and uptake rates in this species were the lowest. The opportunistic U. intestinalis showed kinetics suitable for assimilating N quickly at high external concentrations in order to fulfill the high nutrient demands that support its fast-growing strategy. This response is well adapted to seasons and sites of high nutrient loading but signs of nutrient starvation during summer (decreasing growth and N content) were found in the pristine studied area. N. helminthoides showed an intermediate response in terms of thallus N content and uptake affinity, together with an inducible activation of nitrate uptake. This response assured the uptake of transient nutrient pulses without the nutrient storage response of perennials, or the costly enzymatic machinery of opportunistics. This allows N. helminthoides to effectively exploit low background nutrient conditions interrupted by transient peaks during spring-summer, when most ephemerals found difficulties to survive and perennials suspend their active growth. P uptake did not differ greatly between species suggesting its secondary importance compared to N in the tested algae.  相似文献

Changes in water and nutrient movement are common disturbances resulting from human activities in arctic regions. To assess the influence of water and nutrient movement on different plant growth forms, we added water and NPK fertilizer along 10 to 20 m linear transects across small natural drainages on an Alaskan tundra slope. Water was added by continuous-flow emitters from a drip irrigation system at a rate of 450 L m−1 d−1 during the 1986 growing season and 110 L m−1 d−1 in the 1987 growing season. NPK in the form of Osmocote, a slow release fertilizer, was applied at 0.5 kg per linear meter in early and mid-season of the 1985 growing season. Tissue N and P contents, light-saturated photosynthetic rates, and aboveground biomass production were measured at peak season for key species 2 m above and 2 and 6 m below the water and nutrient applications in 1986 and 1987.
Mean leaf N and P of the species tested increased slightly 2 m below the water addition sites and dramatically below the fertilizer addition sites. Increases in tissue N and P were also found 6 m below the fertilizer addition points. Leaf photosynthesis tended to increase 2 m below the water and nutrient additions for the species tested. Six meters below the treatment application points, photosynthesis was minimally affected in 1986 but increased in 1987. Increases in leaf area on the irrigation treatments were found only for the evergreen species, Ledum palustre and Vaccinium vitis-idaea , 2 m below the site of addition. In contrast, fertilizer addition caused large increases in leaf area production for all species tested at 2 m below the treatment, and for some species at 6 m below treatment. The overall effects of the two treatments were similar, but were greater for the fertilizer addition.  相似文献

Nutrient uptake in eastern deciduous tree seedlings   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
K. Lajtha 《Plant and Soil》1994,160(2):193-199
Tree seedlings that colonize large treefall gaps are generally shade-intolerant species with high potential relative growth rates. Nutrient availability may be significantly elevated in disturbance-induced gaps, however, little is known about the role of differences in nutrient uptake capacities of different species in structuring the community response to gap openings in eastern North American deciduous forests. Seven tree species were grown from seed under both a high and a low nutrient regime, and uptake kinetics of phosphate, ammonium, and nitrate were studied. Yellow birch, a species with intermediate shade tolerance and relative growth rate, had the highest maximum rates of uptake of all ions, while tulip tree, a gap-colonizing species with high relative growth rate, had the lowest rate of phosphate uptake and intermediate rates of ammonium and nitrate uptake. Beech and hickory, which have low relative growth rates and are not gap-colonizing species, had intermediate levels of nutrient uptake. There was no evidence that species with the highest maximum uptake rates measured at high supply concentrations had relatively low uptake at low nutrient supply concentrations. Although birch increased phosphate absorption capacity when grown under a low nutrient regime, this pattern did not hold for nitrate or ammonium uptake, and other species showed no change in nutrient uptake capacity according to nutrient growth regime. Clearly, factors other than nutrient absorption capacity, such as nutrient use efficiency or allocation to root vs. shoot biomass, underlie differences in species' capacities to colonize and maintain a high relative growth rate in canopy gaps.  相似文献

Synopsis Deviations of growth increments from a model describing average growth of 12 common fish species, mostly juveniles, were compared with hydrological variables and biomass density (ranging from 1 gm-2 to 83 gm-2 of potentially competing species of similar size ranges (guilds). Seasonal effects on growth were highly significant for omnivores but not for detritivores. Omnivores exhibited faster growth during the rising water season, and higher growth rates were associated with periods of increased rates of flooding during this season, which could be associated with increased availability of food. No species exhibited density-dependent growth when all seasons were considered together. During the rising-water-level season, no inverse relationship between growth and biomass density was found in any of the 11 species tested at p = 0.05. During the short falling-water season, 2 of 8 species tested did exhibit density-dependent growth but a sign test of correlation coefficients from all species was not significant. These two significant results were from four omnivores tested. However, density-dependent growth was not indicated when the data were pooled within either detritivore or omnivore guilds by hydrological season. It was concluded that with the possible exception of juvenile omnivores during the limited falling-water season, density-dependent growth, and by implication interspecific competition, had no effect in regulating the species' populations investigated in the floodplain environment. Conversely, the importance of a seasonal hydrological regime in maintaining growth rates, at least for omnivores, was evident.  相似文献

Nutrient loaded and non-loaded Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb) Hook) seedlings were transplanted in a pot trial to examine effects of exponential nutrient loading and fertilization treatments on first season growth and N nutrition. The treatments tested four rates of N (0, 30, 60, and 90 mg tree-1) as a mixed NPK fertilizer applied before planting to create a soil fertility gradient, and two topdressings applied only to non-loaded seedlings later in the season. Nutrient loading alone consistently enhanced seedling growth on the four soil fertility classes, increasing respective biomass and N uptake 42, 45, 20 and 8%, and 65, 67, 29 and 18% more than non-loaded seedlings. The positive response was attributed to increased N retranslocation from higher nutrient reserves built up by loading during nursery culture. Net retranslocation from old shoots to new growth was highest soon after planting when nutrient stress was most severe. Pre-plant soil fertilization and post-plant topdressings were also effective in promoting seedling productivity, but equivalent additions yielded less biomass than that from nutrient loading alone. Implications are that exponential nutrient loading may be more efficient in improving early growth performance of Chinese fir seedlings than traditional field fertilization practices at plantation establishment, and may on competitive sites avoid problems of stimulating surrounding vegetation rather than trees. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Six Argentinian wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars grown in nutrient solutions in controlled environment were compared for their nitrate uptake rates on a root dry weight basis. Up to 3-fold differences were observed among the cultivars at 16, 20 and 24 days from germination, either when measured by depletion from the nutrient solution in short-term experiments, or by total N accumulation in the tissue during 8 days.
No differences in total N concentration in root or shoots were found among cultivars. Although the different cultivars showed significant differences in shoot/root ratio and nitrate reductase activity (EC 1.6.6.1) in the roots, none of these parameters was correlated with the nitrate uptake rate. However, nitrate uptake was found to be positively correlated (r = 0.99) with the shoot relative growth rate of the cultivars. The three cultivars with the highest nitrate uptake rates and relative growth rates showed a positive correlation between root nitrate concentration and uptake. However, this correlation was not found in the cultivars with the lowest growth and uptake rates.
Our results indicate that the difference in nitrate uptake rate among these cultivars may only be a consequence of their differences in growth rate, and it is suggested that at least two mechanisms regulate nitrate uptake, one working when plant demand is low and another when plant demand is high.  相似文献

Marine macroalgae are constantly exposed to epibacterial colonizers. The epiphytic bacterial patterns and their temporal and spatial variability on host algae are poorly understood. To investigate the interaction between marine macroalgae and epiphytic bacteria, this study tested if the composition of epibacterial communities on different macroalgae was specific and persisted under varying biotic and abiotic environmental conditions over a 2-year observation time frame. Epibacterial communities on the co-occurring macroalgae Fucus vesiculosus, Gracilaria vermiculophylla and Ulva intestinalis were repeatedly sampled in summer and winter of 2007 and 2008. The epibacterial community composition was analysed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and 16S rRNA gene libraries. Epibacterial community profiles did not only differ significantly at each sampling interval among algal species, but also showed consistent seasonal differences on each algal species at a bacterial phylum level. These compositional patterns re-occurred at the same season of two consecutive years. Within replicates of the same algal species, the composition of bacterial phyla was subject to shifts at the bacterial species level, both within the same season but at different years and between different seasons. However, 7-16% of sequences were identified as species specific to the host alga. These findings demonstrate that marine macroalgae harbour species-specific and temporally adapted epiphytic bacterial biofilms on their surfaces. Since several algal host-specific bacteria were highly similar to other bacteria known to either avoid subsequent colonization by eukaryotic larvae or to exhibit potent antibacterial activities, algal host-specific bacterial associations are expected to play an important role for marine macroalgae.  相似文献

Among the greatest challenges currently facing terrestrial plant communities are anthropogenic nutrient amendments. Nutrient inputs can change community attributes, such as diversity and composition, and have been implicated in the increasing dominance of certain groups of species, like exotics. Overall effects of nutrients will likely be contingent on other factors in the community. One such factor is within-season change in plant communities, which has seldom been examined but may be of considerable importance. We examined within-season effects of nutrient manipulations (fertilization and litter removal) on overall community attributes and different species groups in a temperate grassland. We found the effects of nutrient amendments varied significantly over the growing season. Fertilization reduced species richness and diversity at all census points, but had the greatest effects on communities early and late in the growing season. There were few seasonal effects on species richness within functional groups, suggesting that nutrient effects were consistent and established early. Although fertilization reduced both native and exotic forb species richness throughout the season, exotics surprisingly suffered greater species losses than natives. Comparisons between within-season data and data from the end of season showed nutrient amendments have stronger community effects than previously recognized. We found that differences in cumulative species richness (all species detected during the growing season) between fertilized and unfertilized plots were greater than differences in species richness measures from any single census date. Our results suggest that predicting the overall response of plant communities to anthropogenic nutrient amendments will require thorough temporal assessments, particularly of early season species, which are generally overlooked in community studies.  相似文献

Important phenological activities in seasonally dry tropical forest species occur within the hot‐dry period when soil water is limiting, while the subsequent wet period is utilized for carbon accumulation. Leaf emergence and leaf area expansion in most of these tree species precedes the rainy season when the weather is very dry and hot and the soil cannot support nutrient uptake by the plants. The nutrient requirement for leaf expansion during the dry summer period, however, is substantial in these species. We tested the hypothesis that the nutrients withdrawn from the senescing leaves support the emergence and expansion of leaves in dry tropical woody species to a significant extent. We examined the leaf traits (with parameters such as leaf life span, leaf nutrient content and retranslocation of nutrients during senescence) in eight selected tree species in northern India. The concentrations of N, P and K declined in the senescing foliage while those of Na and Ca increased. Time series observations on foliar nutrients indicated a substantial amount of nutrient resorption before senescence and a ‘tight nutrient budgeting’. The resorbed N‐mass could potentially support 50 to 100% and 46 to 80% of the leaf growth in terms of area and weight, respectively, across the eight species studied. Corresponding values for P were 29 to 100% and 20 to 91%, for K 29 to 100% and 20 to 57%, for Na 3 to 100% and 1 to 54%, and for Ca 0 to 32% and 0 to 30%. The species differed significantly with respect to their efficiency in nutrient resorption. Such interspecific differences in leaf nutrient economy enhance the conservative utilization of soil nutrients by the dry forest community. This reflects an adaptational strategy of the species growing on seasonally dry, nutrient‐poor soils as they tend to depend more or less on efficient internal cycling and, thus, utilize the retranslocated nutrients for the production of new foliage biomass in summer when the availability of soil moisture and nutrients is severely limited.  相似文献

A central goal of ecosystem ecology is to understand how the cycling of nutrients and the growth of organisms are linked. Ecologists have repeatedly observed that nutrient mineralization and plant production are closely coupled in time in many terrestrial ecosystems. Typically, mineralization rates of limiting nutrients, particularly of nitrogen, during the growing season determine nutrient availability while pools of mineral nutrients remain low and relatively constant. Although several previous reports suggest nitrogen mineralization has the potential to vary seasonally and out of phase with plant production, such a phenomenon has been poorly documented. Here we report results from a semiarid savanna ecosystem characterized by distinct temporal asynchrony in rates of soil nitrogen cycling and plant production. Periods of positive plant growth following the onset of rains coincide with periods of low N turnover rates, whereas higher rates occur late in the wet season following plant senescence and throughout dry seasons. Plant uptake from the substantial mineral N pool present early in the growing season is sufficient to explain most of the N allocation to aboveground plant biomass during the growing season, even in the absence of any wet-season mineralization. The mineral N pool is subsequently recharged by late wet- and dry-season mineralization, plus urine inputs at sites with high levels of ungulate activity. These findings suggest fundamental changes in the quality of substrates available to decomposers over a seasonal cycle, with significant implications for the partitioning of limiting nutrients by plant species, the seasonal pattern of nutrient limitations of aboveground production, and the effective use of N fertilizers in semiarid ecosystems.  相似文献

ADAPTIVE STRATEGIES OF WOODY SPECIES IN NEOTROPICAL SAVANNAS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. In this review we discuss the adaptive strategy of woody species in tropical savannas. The low, evergreen, broadleaved, sclerophyllous tree is considered as the typical woody representative in these ecosystems. The discussion is largely based on data concerning four widespread neotropical species: Curatella americana, Byrsonima crassifolia, Bowdichia virgilioides and Casearia sylvestris, together with more fragmentary information available on other American and African savanna woody species. 2. Several types of savanna ecosystems with contrasting ecological features have to be distinguished. Our discussion refers to tree species in one of these types: seasonal savannas, that occur in a tropical wet and dry climate, with constantly high temperature, and on well-drained soils. Most of these savannas are normally burned once a year, towards the end of the dry season. 3. Woody species in seasonal savannas exhibit a quite distinctive morphology. They have low, tortuous trunks, deep and extensive root systems, relatively high R/S and L/S ratios, and large, highly scleromorphic leaves. Their annual phenodynamics appears somewhat puzzling since leaf renewal and expansion, as well as blooming, take place during the dry, apparently less favourable, part of the year. 4. Savanna trees maintain high leaf conductance throughout the year. Some species show a moderate midday decrease in leaf conductance suggesting partial stomatal closure, particularly under very high atmospheric water demands, or in young, developing leaves. However, given the steep vapour density gradient, transpiration flux density tends to be high, especially on clear dry-season days. 5. There is no drastic drop in leaf water potential, as might be expected with a high transpiration rate. The most negative values attained in either season only rarely exceed the leaf turgor loss point. This moderate fall in ψ permits leaf expansion in the dry season. Variable hydraulic resistance contributes to maintain high water flow when steep ψ gradients between soil and leaves are produced. 6. When all factors are taken into account, it seems that savanna trees maintain a favourable water budget all the year, thanks to their extensive root systems that may extract soil water from deep layers, thus allowing the maintenance of a high water flux through the soil-plant-atmosphere system even during the dry season. In this way, these trees have the least seasonal behaviour of all plant components in the seasonal savanna ecosystem. 7. Seasonal savannas occur on extremely poor, nutrient-deficient soils. As an apparent consequence of this nutrient stress, the concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium in leaves tends to be significantly lower than in forest trees or in drought-deciduous species. 8. Two mechanisms contribute to improve the nutrient economy. One is the reallocation of absorbed nutrients between old and young tissues; the other, the minimization of nutrient losses due to low leaf wettability, low leaf cuticular conductance, and leaf renewal in the rainless season. 9. Savanna trees have low photosynthetic capacity. This is probably due to high internal resistance of leaves induced by their low nitrogen concentration. However, under field conditions rates of CO2 uptake may be maintained near their optimum because leaf conductance is high all day, and leaf temperature closely matches air temperature, remaining therefore within the optimal range for photosynthesis. 10. All in all, it appears that the physiological behaviour of savanna trees favours a continuously high water flux through the plant that, even if it lowers water-use efficiency, maintains leaf temperatures near optimum for CO2 uptake, prevents sharp drops in leaf water potential, and induces a high passive uptake of soil nutrients. In this way, the close interaction between water, carbon and nutrient economies leads to the increased fitness of these populations in the seasonal savanna environment.  相似文献

Evolution of regulatory responses to feeding in snakes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Do animal species that normally consume large meals at long intervals evolve to down-regulate their metabolic physiology while fasting and to up-regulate it steeply on feeding? To test this hypothesis, we compared postfeeding regulatory responses in eight snake species: four frequent feeders on small meals and four infrequent feeders on large meals. For each species, we measured factorial changes in metabolic rate, in activities and capacities of five small intestinal brush border nutrient transporters, and in masses of eight organs that function in nutrient processing after consumption of a rodent meal equivalent to 25% of the snake's body mass. It turned out that, compared with frequent feeders, infrequent feeders digest that meal more slowly; have lower metabolic rates, organ masses, and nutrient uptake rates and capacities while fasting; have higher energy expenditure during digestion; and have higher postfeeding factorial increases in metabolic rate, organ masses, and nutrient uptake rates and capacities. These conclusions, which conform to the hypothesis mentioned above, remain after phylogeny has been taken into account. The small organ masses and low nutrient transporter activities during fasting contribute to the low fasting metabolism of infrequent feeders. Quantitative calculations of partial energy budgets suggest that energy savings drive the evolution of low mass and activities of organs during fasting and of large postfeeding regulatory responses in infrequent feeders. We propose further tests of this hypothesis among other snake species and among other ectotherms.  相似文献

The reliability of methods for nutrient uptake measurements across the intestinal epithelium relies on the integrity of the mucosal epithelium and the enterocytes. We tested effects of tissue handling during the "everted sleeves method" on the length of intestinal villi, the surface magnification, the circumference of the gut, and the thickness of the muscle layer in sunbirds (Nectarinia osea), chicken (Gallus gallus), and mice (Mus domesticus). The sunbird has thin and delicate intestinal villi that are greatly affected by the everted sleeves method. After eversion and incubation, villi lost 30% of their original length. The severe tissue damage coincides with uptake measurements for glucose that were an order of magnitude lower than in other nectar-feeding (nectarivorous) birds of similar body size. Tissue handling during the everted sleeves method had significant effects on morphometric parameters of chicken and mouse intestines, but on a light-microscopical level, the tissue integrity and the cytology of the enterocytes were not altered. Therefore, we think that the everted sleeves method renders reliable and reproducible measurements of nutrient uptake in those species. We conclude that a histological evaluation is necessary to assess the reliability of the method before it is applied to adults or to the developmental stage of any species.  相似文献

The rapid growth and prolific reproduction of many insect herbivores depend on the efficiencies and rates with which they acquire nutrients from their host plants. However, little is known about how nutrient assimilation efficiencies are affected by leaf maturation or how they vary between plant species. Recent work showed that leaf maturation can greatly decrease the protein assimilation efficiency (PAE) of Lymantria dispar caterpillars on some tree species, but not on species in the willow family (Salicaceae). One trait of many species in the Salicaceae that potentially affects PAE is the continuous (or “indeterminate”) development of leaves throughout the growing season. To improve our understanding of the temporal and developmental patterns of nutrient availability for tree-feeding insects, this study tested two hypotheses: nutrients (protein and carbohydrate) are more efficiently assimilated from immature than mature leaves, and, following leaf maturation, nutrients are more efficiently assimilated from indeterminate than determinate tree species. The nutritional physiology and growth of a generalist caterpillar (L. dispar) were measured on five determinate and five indeterminate tree species while their leaves were immature and again after they were mature. In support of the first hypothesis, caterpillars that fed on immature leaves had significantly higher PAE and carbohydrate assimilation efficiency (CAE), as well as higher protein assimilation rates and growth rates, than larvae that fed on mature leaves. Contrary to the second hypothesis, caterpillars that fed on mature indeterminate tree leaves did not have higher PAE than those that fed on mature determinate leaves, while CAE differed by only 3% between tree development types. Instead, “high-PAE” and “low-PAE” tree species were found across taxonomic and development categories. The results of this study emphasize the importance of physiological mechanisms, such as nutrient assimilation efficiency, to explain the large variation in host plant quality for insect herbivores.  相似文献

Nutrient limitation determines the primary production and species composition of many ecosystems. Here we apply an adaptive dynamics approach to investigate evolution of the ecological stoichiometry of primary producers and its implications for plant-herbivore interactions. The model predicts a trade-off between the competitive ability and grazing susceptibility of primary producers, driven by changes in their nutrient uptake rates. High nutrient uptake rates enhance the competitiveness of primary producers but also increase their nutritional quality for herbivores. This trade-off enables coexistence of nutrient exploiters and grazing avoiders. If herbivores are not selective, evolution favors runaway selection toward high nutrient uptake rates of the primary producers. However, if herbivores select nutritious food, the model predicts an evolutionarily stable strategy with lower nutrient uptake rates. When the model is parameterized for phytoplankton and zooplankton, the evolutionary dynamics result in plant-herbivore oscillations at ecological timescales, especially in environments with high nutrient availability and low selectivity of the herbivores. High herbivore selectivity stabilizes the community dynamics. These model predictions show that evolution permits nonequilibrium dynamics in plant-herbivore communities and shed new light on the evolutionary forces that shape the ecological stoichiometry of primary producers.  相似文献

Numerous investigators have suggested that herbivores almost always increase rates of nutrient and energy flow through terrestrial ecosystems by returning to the soil fecal material and urine with faster turnover rate than shed plant litter. These previous theories and models always treat the producer compartment as a homogenous pool. Essentially, they assume that consumers feed through a pureed cream of vegetable soup. However, many field observations and experiments have shown that consumers feed selectively (i.e., in a cafeteria) and that consumer choice is made on the same chemical basis that determines decomposition rates. Plants that are preferred food sources often have higher nutrient content, higher growth rates, and faster decomposition rates. As consumption reduces dominance of these species in favor of unpreferred species with slower decomposition, rates of nutrient cycling and energy flow should therefore decline. We analyze a model in which the consumer is given a choice among producers that vary in nutrient uptake rates, rates of nutrient return to decomposers, and consumer preference, and which is parameterized for plants and consumers characteristic of boreal regions. In this model, in an open, well-mixed system with one consumer and two such producers, the nutrient/energy flow will not exceed that of a system without the consumer. If the consumer has a choice between two such producers, it must choose one plant over the other at a greater ratio than that between the two plants in uptake and decay rates. In contrast, in a closed system the consumer must be less selective to coexist with the two plants. The system behavior is determined by the level of nutrient return through the consumer and the differences between the plants in nutrient uptake rates and consumer preference. Species richness affects properties of this model system to the extent that species are functionally distinct (i.e., have different rate constants) in a multivariate space of life history traits (i.e., nutrient uptake and palatability). We suggest that the biochemical variability of plant tissues that simultaneously determines both consumer preference and decomposition rates is an essential feature of food webs that cannot be ignored. Thus, ecosystem models should, at minimum, consider more than one producer type with consumer preference.  相似文献

Measurement of short-term nutrient uptake rates in cranberry by aeroponics   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Aeroponics, a soil-less plant culture system in which fresh nutrient solutions are intermittently or continuously misted on to plant roots, is capable of sustaining plant growth for extended periods of time while maintaining a constantly refreshed nutrient solution. Although used relatively extensively in commercial installations and in root physiology research, use of aeroponics in nutrient studies is rare. The object of this study was to examine whether nutrient uptake rates could be calculated for aeroponic systems by difference using measurements of concentrations and volumes of input and efflux solutions. Data were collected from an experiment with cranberry plants (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait. cv. Stevens) cultured aeroponically with nutrient solutions containing various concentrations of ammonium-N and isotopically labelled nitrate-N. Validation of the calculated uptake rates was sought by: (1) evaluating charge balance of the solutions and total ion uptake (including proton efflux) and (2) comparison with N-isotope measurements. Charge balance and proton efflux calculations required use of chemical modelling of the solutions to determine speciation of dissolved phosphate and acid-neutralizing capacity (ANC). The results show that charge balance requirements were acceptably satisfied for individual solution analyses and for total ion uptake when proton efflux was included. Relative rates of nitrate/ammonium uptake determined by difference were in agreement with those determined by isotopic techniques. Additional information was easily obtained from this experimental technique, including evidence of diurnal variation in nutrient uptake, correlation between ammonium uptake and proton efflux, and the relationship between ion concentration and uptake. Use of aeroponic systems for non-destructive measurement of water and ion uptake rates for numerous other species and nutrients appears promising.  相似文献
