We examined the gene sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) in two Japanese wood mouse species, Apodemus speciosus (n = 89) and A. argenteus (n = 46), which are distributed on the four main islands of Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu) and on the small islands surrounding them. Apodemus speciosus, the larger of the two species, showed substantial genetic variation, with a maximum of 3% sequence divergence, and remarkable phylogenetic subdivision with two major clades. One clade represents haplotypes from a central region, including Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and their adjacent islands; the other clade includes haplotypes from Hokkaido and the peripheral islands, forming four subclades: a) Hokkaido, b) Sado Island, c) Satsunan Islands, and d) the Izu Islands. Sequence divergence among the four subclades was 1.0 to 1.5%, implying that A. speciosus colonized these geographic regions 0.2 to 0.3 million years ago, assuming a substitution rate of 2.4% per million years. The population on the Izu Islands has preserved haplotypes that are distinct from those in any other region, providing good evidence for the natural colonization of the volcanic islands of the Izu Islands. The cyt b sequence variation had no relation to the karyotypic dimorphism for the eastern (2n = 48) and western (2n = 46) geographic groups, between which a strict border exists at central Honshu. On the other hand, Apodemus argenteus, the smaller of the two species, showed a similar level of sequence divergence (maximum of 3%) but no substantial geographic differentiation: populations in Hokkaido, Sado, and Yakushima shared similar haplotypes with each of the central populations, suggesting that genetic exchanges occurred among the localities in the last 0.15 million years. The apparent genetic structure of the mitochondrial DNA found in the A. speciosus population might be caused solely by long-term existence in insular regions, presumably due to ecological superiority relative to A. argenteus.  相似文献

Cephalometrical configurations of Japanese people were investigated on two hundred and sixteen groups living on the four main islands of Japan: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The Japanese in Honshu were divided geographically into a narrow-featured eastern major group and a broad-featured western major group. A physical characteristic of Japanese living in the western mid-Honshu was the lengthened feature of their cephalic measurement, an influence of a long-headed group of Korean people; Japanese residents in eastern mid-Honshu, however, showed the result of mixing with a short-headed group of Korean people. Japanese people living in Hokkaido, the northernmost island, and in the Ryukyu Islands in the South of Japan, presented no important finding which suggests their influence on the physical characteristics of the Japanese. Ongoing studies indicating physical relationships between Kyushu or Shikoku residents and Honshu residents, are as yet insufficient.  相似文献

We studied morphological and allozymic variation in populations of Japanese salamanders, Hynobius boulengeri and H. stejnegeri. Adult H. boulengeri showed sexual dimorphism, and juveniles differed greatly from adults in many morphological characters. From the results of multivariate analyses of morphological characters, the populations were divided into four groups: (I) H. boulengeri from Honshu, (II) H. boulengeri from Shikoku, (III) H. boulengeri from the Sobo-Katamuki Mountains of Kyushu and H. stejnegeri, and (IV) H. boulengeri from the Amakusa Islands and the Osumi Peninsula. Phenotypic relationships among the four groups were identical to relationships clarified by allozymic analyses, except for group IV, which was included in group III in the allozyme tree. Some morphometric characters were significantly correlated with environmental variables. We consider H. stejnegeri to be a valid species based on its unique color pattern, morphometric characters, and allelic composition, even though it was nested within group III of H. boulengeri by both morphological and allozymic analyses. We propose that group I from Honshu and group II from Shikoku should be treated as H. boulengeri sensu stricto and H. hirosei, respectively. Resolving the taxonomic status of the remaining populations of groups III and IV from Kyushu requires further study.  相似文献

We previously revealed the presence of six genetically distinct matrilineal populations of the Japanese dormouse Glirulus japonicus in the distribution range of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu islands. In this study, we extended this analysis using mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences (n = 96) and Y-chromosome-specific SRY gene sequences (n = 22) from individuals collected from Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Oki Dogo I. The cytochrome b sequence data allowed us to define precise geographic ranges of the six previously known and three newly found distinct matrilineal lineages: northeastern Honshu (I), east-central Honshu (II), west-central Honshu and the Kii Peninsula (III), the western part of Honshu (IV), Shikoku (V), westernmost Honshu and Kyushu (VI), the northern part of central Honshu (VII), the southern part of central Honshu (VIII), and Oki Dogo I. (IX). Our inference of geographic borders suggests that regions of lower and higher altitudes in the mountain systems played important roles in driving the hosting and separation of lineages, respectively. Six matrilineal lineages (I, II, V, VI, VIII, and XI) were shown to possess their own SRY haplotypes, while lineages III and IV shared one haplotype. These data together with our previous observation of nuclear ribosomal RNA gene variation indicate advanced populational subdivision in this species. It is thus evident that each of the populations, including those living at high latitudes and in limited geographic spaces, have survived for several million years. A specific ability to tolerate cold may have permitted G. japonicus to preserve anciently diverged lineages in each locality.  相似文献

Polistes formosanus Sonan, 1927 is closely related to P. japonicus de Saussure, 1858, and has been treated variously as a good species or subspecies or synonym of P. japonicus. We designate the lectotype of P. formosanus. Detailed examination of morphological characters of specimens from continental Asia, Taiwan, the Nansei Islands and main islands of Japan showed that P. formosanus is a good species different from P. japonicus. Molecular phylogenetic analyses using mitochondrial genes also supported this conclusion. Polistes formosanus is distributed in northern and central Taiwan and in the Nansei Islands and extends northward to the Amami Islands, while P. japonicus occurs in continental Asia, central Taiwan, Korean Peninsula, Honshu to Kyushu of Japan and the Osumi Islands (Yakushima and Tanega-shima Island) of the Nansei Islands. The speciation and biogeography of P. formosanus are briefly discussed.  相似文献

A partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene (745 bp) was determined for 57 specimens of a geotrupid beetle (Phelotrupes auratus) from throughout the Japanese archipelago. Of the 57 beetles examined, 42 haplotypes were identified. Phylogenetic trees inferred using maximum parsimony, neighbor joining, and Bayesian inference methods were highly congruent. Reconstructed phylogenetic relationships indicated that P. auratus from the Japanese archipelago was separated into two distinct lineages: Group A, which consisted of 35 haplotypes from Honshu, Shikoku, and Hokkaido Islands, and Group B, which consisted of seven haplotypes from Kyushu and Yakushima Islands. In addition, two sublineages were also recognized within Group A: Subgroup A-1, which consisted of 11 haplotypes from eastern Honshu and Hokkaido, and Subgroup A-2, which consisted of 10 haplotypes from western Honshu and Shikoku. Average genetic distances within Group A were positively correlated to geographic distance between sampling localities. Phylogenetic relationships among haplotypes did not correspond to subspecies classification.  相似文献

To distinguish pig-wild boar crossbred Inobuta from Japanese wild boar populations, a genetic method by using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplotypes and the nuclear glucosephosphate isomerase-processed pseudogene (GPIP) was developed. Sixteen mtDNA haplotypes from 152 wild boars from Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshu islands of Japan were distinct from those from Asian and European domestic pigs. Five alleles of GPIP were classified into two groups: 1). alleles GPIP*1, GPIP*3 and GPIP*3a from Japanese wild boars, Asian wild boars and domestic pigs; 2). alleles GPIP*4 and GPIP*4a from European wild boars and domestic pigs. An extensive genetic survey was done to distinguish the crossbred Inobuta from 60 wild boars hunted on Tsushima Island, Goto Islands, and Nagasaki and Ooita Prefectures. The mtDNA haplotypes from the 60 samples showed Japanese wild boars, but four wild boar samples from Nagasaki Prefecture had the European GPIP allele, GPIP*4. These results showed that nuclear DNA polymorphism analysis is useful, in addition to mtDNA haplotype assay, to detect "Inobuta" having the European genotype from Japanese wild boar populations.  相似文献

Hynobius naevius, distributed on western Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu Islands of Japan, includes two genetically distinct groups (Groups A and B) that have never been delimited morphologically. Using specimens from the entire species range, we investigated the possibility of distinguishing these groups morphologically. Multivariate analyses of morphometric characters resulted in recognition of two groups that corresponded well to the two genetic groups. One (Group A) was characterized by larger body, compressed tail, shallower vomerine tooth series, bluish- or reddish-purple ground color, and pale-white lateral markings. In contrast, another (Group B) was characterized by smaller body, cylindrical tail, longer vomerine tooth series, reddish-brown ground color, and white lateral markings. Group A was composed of populations from the Chugoku District of Honshu and northern Kyushu, and could not be divided into subgroups, while Group B encompassed populations from the Chubu and Kinki Districts of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, and was subdivided into three local subgroups that are geographically separated by marine straits. Morphometric differentiation in Group A is presumed to have been less affected by genetic factors than by other factors, such as ecological relationships with other, coexisting species. Differentiation in Group B is assumed to have been enhanced not only by genetic but also by climatological factors.  相似文献

The associations of the butterfly fauna of the Japanese islands of Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku and Ryukyu Rett are analysed with respect to one another and to the fauna of the far-east U.S.S.R. A faunal discontinuity exists between the fauna of Ryukyu Rett and all other areas. The fauna of Ryukyu Rett can be considered as being of the Oriental region, the faunas of the other Japanese islands as being of the Palaearctic region. This view was reinforced with conclusions drawn from MacArthus&Wilson's theory of island biogeography (1963, 1967). The divergence of die faunas of the Japanese islands is dependent on their isolation - the further the distance between islands, the greater the isolation and the greater the faunal divergence. Thus the fauna of all silands of Japan, except of the Ryukyu Rett, have a close association with the far-east Russian fauna. There is a greater similarity between these faunas than between the fauna of the islands of Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku with respect to that of Ryukyu Rett.  相似文献

Abstract The pollination and breeding systems of Campanula punctata both in the Izu Islands and the mainland (Honshu) adjacent to the islands were investigated. The predominant pollinators of campanulas are: 1) Bombus diversus in Honshu, 2) Bombus ardens and halictid bees on Oshima Island, and 3) halictid bees on the islands of Niijima, Kodzushma, and Hachijo. The absence of bumble bees except B. ardens on Oshima Island, and the abundance of halictid bees represent a kind of island effect. Flowers of the campanula in the Islands were found to be smaller than those of the mainland. This might have resulted from adaptation to the small pollinators. Pollination experiments with plants grown from seeds revealed the following differences in breeding system: 1) most of the campanulas from Honshu were highly self-incompatible (SI) and a few partially self-compatible (SC), 2) one half of the plants from Oshima Island were more or less SC and the remaining highly SI, 3) those from Hachijo Island were SC and potentially autogamous. The breakdown of dichogamy co-operated with self-compatibility in the development of self-fertilizing ability in Hachijo plants. Several possible causes for the change in the breeding system including the change in pollinators in the Islands are discussed.  相似文献

Generic characters of Platydialepis Haupt, 1941 are presented. A new species of the genus, P. amamiensis sp. nov. from the Amami Islands, the Ryukyus, Japan, is described, and another species of the genus, P. ryoheii Ishikawa, 1957, distributed in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, Japan, is redescribed. Their biological notes are also given. A new combination is proposed: Platydialepis taiwaniana (Tsuneki, 1989) (=Malloscelis taiwaniana Tsuneki).  相似文献

We performed a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the ground beetles Apatrobus (Carabidae), endemic to Japan, using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and the nuclear 28S rRNA (28S) genes. We focused on the species divergence in Kyushu, Shikoku and western Honshu and used 15 of 19 species and three populations with undetermined species in the DNA analysis. The gene trees showed that, of the Apatrobus species studied, A. hayachinensis Nakane from northern Honshu was not included in the monophyletic group of the other Apatrobus species and likely to be of a different genus. Divergence time estimation suggested that Apatrobus species excluding A. hayachinensis diverged 5.2 million years ago and the subsequent divergence of species occurred during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. In each of the main islands, Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshu, two or more distinct lineages occurred and all species had restricted distribution areas, suggesting that ancient dispersal and vicariance among the three main islands resulted in the nested biogeographical pattern of species distribution.  相似文献

The phylogeography of the Japanese pond turtle, Mauremys japonica (Temminck and Schlegel, 1835), which is an endemic species in Japan, was studied by analyzing the variation in two mitochondrial DNA sequences, the cytochrome b gene and the control region. These analyses suggest that M. japonica comprises two major groups. The first one was found in the more eastern region, eastern Honshu Island and Shikoku Island, while the second was found in a western region, Kyushu Island and the Chugoku District (the westernmost part of Honshu Island). The boundary between the two groups is located in the Chugoku District. The nucleotide and haplotype diversities were very low, and these low diversities seem to have been caused by a bottleneck in the last glacial age. These results suggest that this species survived the last glacial period in two refugia, one in the central part of Honshu Island and the other one in Kyushu Island. Subsequently, population expansion took place in the postglacial period, and the groups from the two refugia extended their distribution ranges to the present boundary in the Chugoku District which represents a secondary contact zone.  相似文献

Cryptoperlan stoneflies inhabit the headwaters or upper stream areas of rivers. A molecular phylogeographic study of cryptoperlans in the Japanese archipelago and on Taiwan Island has been conducted. Altogether the mtDNA 16S rRNA region of 71 individuals from 61 populations, the mtDNA COI region of 76 individuals from 41 populations, and the nDNA Histone 3 region of 56 individuals from 52 populations were sequenced and analyzed. The respective ML, NJ, MP and Bayesian dendrograms were proposed from the sequencing data for the 16S rRNA region (362-bp), the COI region (540-bp), and the Histone 3 region (322-bp), estimated using Yoraperla uenoi as an outgroup. Based upon those data and the resulting dendrograms, it has become clear that the cryptoperlan stoneflies of the Japanese archipelago and those of Taiwan Island comprise two major clades. The first of these two major clades consists of a number of OTUs [operational taxonomic units: Cryptoperla japonica (Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu Islands) + C. ishigakiensis (Ishigaki-jima Island) + Cryptoperla spp. (Okinawa-jima and Taiwan Islands)]. The other clade consists of the species Cryptoperla kawasawai inhabiting only Shikoku Island. Of particular note, C. kawasawai was observed to be significantly genetically differentiated from all other cryptoperlans examined. Yet, despite the fact that the specimens of C. japonica were taken from a very broad range of populations, their genetic diversity was relatively low, similar to that of C. kawasawai, which inhabits only a limited region within Shikoku Island. Furthermore, even the species C. kawasawai was revealed to be composed of two significantly genetically differentiated subclades. It is considered that this genetic structure among cryptoperlans largely reflects the geological history from the middle to upper Miocene Epoch (i.e., Tortonian stage) of the Japanese archipelago and Taiwan Island.  相似文献

Ancient mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mainly from Jomon Period Sus scrofa bone specimens (6,100-1,700 years old) was examined to clarify the genetic relationships between prehistoric and contemporary S. scrofa on Hokkaido, Honshu, Sado, and Izu islands of the Japanese Archipelago. Phylogenetic analysis of the mtDNA control region (574 bp) and analysis of pairwise nucleotide differences between prehistoric and contemporary S. scrofa sequences showed the following relationships between these groups: (1) a group genetically similar to contemporary Japanese wild boars was found mainly on Honshu Island, Hokkaido Island, and the Izu Islands, and (2) a monophyletic group distinct from contemporary Japanese wild boars was found on Sado Island. These results suggest that prehistoric people introduced S. scrofa from Honshu Island to Hokkaido Island and the Izu Islands. The estimated divergence times between the prehistoric Sado group and the other prehistoric S. scrofa is approximately congruent with the geological isolation of Sado Island from Honshu Island. Our results suggest that this extinct S. scrofa population was present on Sado Island as recently as around 2,000 years ago.  相似文献

Using starch gel electrophoresis, geographical enzyme variation was surveyed in 46 populations of the Japanese salamander Hynobius nebulosus , which occurs widely in western Japan. This species exhibits substantial local genetic differentiation and is more diverse in inland regions than on small islands. In several different analyses, two groups of populations, one from Kyushu Island to the westernmost part of Chugoku district, Honshu (western group), and another from Shikoku through Kinki to Chubu district, Honshu (eastern group), were consistently recognized. Most of the remaining populations were placed in two less clearly-defined groups: the montane group from the Chugoku Mountains and the Chugoku group from the coastal regions of Chugoku district. The divergence patterns of H. nebulosus are thought to be related to the geological history of its range. The populations near the boundary of the western group were found to share several alleles that were predominant on both sides of the boundary, indicating past secondary contact. Differentiation in the montane group did not follow the isolation by distance model, probably because several populations included were genetically mixed with lowland populations of the Chugoku group.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 89 , 311–330.  相似文献

Two psephenid beetles, Eubrianax granicollis Lewis and E. ramicornis Kiesenwetter, are common species on the main islands of Japan (i.e. Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu), but diagnostic characters for larval identification are unknown. Two types of field‐collected Eubrianax larvae from Honshu and Kyushu were discriminated based on the distributions of granules on the dorsal surface. These larvae were assigned to E. granicollis and E. ramicornis by comparing them with larvae of the two species obtained via laboratory rearing. The two species were also identified unambiguously on the basis of their mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequences. Larval and pupal morphology are described based on laboratory‐reared specimens.  相似文献

Cellana nigrolineata is amongst the most common and largest patellogastropod limpets in Japan, and has two color morphs. Analyses of anatomical and morphological characters, shell structure, and mitochondrial COI data (658bp) of these color morphs suggested that they represent intraspecific genetic variation. Molecular analysis demonstrated that the species can be subdivided into three genetically distinct groups: (Clade 1) Honshu, Shikoku to Eastern Kyushu, (Clade 2) Western Kyushu and (Clade 3) Southern Kyushu. Clade 1 and Clade 2 + 3 are distributed on the coastlines adjacent to two warm-water currents, the Kuroshio and Tsushima Currents, respectively. The southern population (Clade 3) is currently isolated by inhospitable sandy shores. The subdivision of these groups likely dates from the glacial period of Plio-Pleistocene time.  相似文献
