The capability of early life history stage fishes to access nursery habitat within managed salt marshes is dependent on their ability to negotiate water control structures (WCSs). Knowledge of swimming ability and hydrodynamic preferences is essential to assess the impact of WCSs on fish movement in managed marshes. These data, however, are lacking for many common estuarine fishes, and the utility of the data for the few species examined thus far is limited. We examined critical swimming speeds and derived linear relationships between fish size and swimming speed for juveniles of six common estuarine fish species of the southeast U.S. and northern Gulf of Mexico coasts. White mullet Mugil curema displayed the greatest swimming ability among these six species and was able to swim against currents ≥ 30 cm s?1 higher than the other species examined at the same size. The remaining species displayed lower critical swimming speeds and were classified into groups of moderate (pinfish Lagodon rhomboides, striped mullet Mugil cephalus) or slow (silver perch Bairdiella chrysoura, spotfin mojarra Eucinostomus argenteus, spot Leiostomus xanthurus) swimmers. Our results suggest that high-flow conditions at WCSs would likely preclude the passage of all but the largest juvenile fishes, and passage for most juveniles would occur under low-flow conditions; these flows at WCSs are dictated largely by site-specific tidal and weather conditions.  相似文献

While the structuring role of fish in lakes is well studied for the summer season in North temperate lakes, little is known about their role in winter when fish activity and light irradiance potentially are lower. This is unfortunate as the progressing climate change may have strong effects on lake winter temperature and possibly on trophic dynamics too. We conducted an enclosure experiment with and without the presence of fish throughout winter in two shallow lakes with contrasting phosphorus concentrations. In hypertrophic Lake Søbygård, absence of fish led to higher biomass of zooplankton, higher grazing potential (zooplankton:phytoplankton ratio) and, accordingly, lower biomass of phytoplankton and chlorophyll a (Chl a), while the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), oxygen and pH decreased. The average size of egg-bearing Daphnia and Bosmina and the minimum size of egg-bearing specimens of the two genera rose. In the less eutrophic Lake Stigsholm, zooplankton and their grazing potential were also markedly affected by fish. However, the decrease in Chl a was slight, and phytoplankton biovolume, pH and the oxygen concentration were not affected. TN was higher when fish were absent. Our results indicate that: (i) there is a notable effect of fish on zooplankton community structure and size during winter in both eutrophic and hypertrophic North temperate lakes, (ii) Chl a can be high in winter in such lakes, despite low light irradiance, if fish are abundant, and (iii) the cascading effects on phytoplankton and nutrients in winter may be more pronounced in hypertrophic lakes. Climate warming supposedly leading to reduced winter mortality and dominance of small fish may enhance the risk of turbid state conditions in nutrient-enriched shallow lakes, not only during the summer season, but also during winter.  相似文献

For coral reef fish with an obligate relationship to their habitat, like Pomacentrid damselfish, choosing a suitable home amongst the reef structure is key to survival. A surprisingly small number of studies have examined patterns in adult damselfish distributions compared to other ontogenetic phases. The aim of this study was to determine which reef and coral colony characteristics explained adult damselfish distribution patterns in a Red Sea reef. The characteristics investigated were reef type (continuous or patchy), coral species (seven species of Acropora), and coral morphology (coral size and branching density). The focal damselfish species were Dascyllus aruanus, D. marginatus, Chromis viridis, and C. flavaxilla. Occupancy (presence or absence of resident damselfish), group size and fish species richness were not significantly different between the seven Acropora species. However, within each coral species, damselfish were more likely to occupy larger coral colonies than smaller coral colonies. Occupancy rates were also higher in patchy reef habitats than in continuous sections of the reef, probably because average coral colony size was greater in patchy reef type. Fish group size increased significantly with coral colony volume and with larger branch spacing. Multi-species groups of fish commonly occurred and were increasingly likely with reduced branching density and increased coral size.  相似文献

Understanding the trophic relationships among closely related species is a way to obtain subsidies for their management and conservation of their habitats. The diets of three co-occurring abundant fish species of the Gerreidae family (Diapterus rhombeus, Eucinostomus argenteus and Eucinostomus gula) in a tropical bay were described. The tested hypothesis was that the three sympatric species present shifts in their use of resource during the ontogenetic development to facilitate their coexistence. Size groups for each species were categorized according to breakpoints in the morphological structures determined by piecewise regression models. Significant overlapping in diets was found for all size classes of D. rhombeus but not for size classes of the Eucinostomus genus. Furthermore, different size classes of D. rhombeus did not overlap diet with size classes of the Eucinostomus genus. The specialization in feeding niches corresponding to growth seems to bring benefits for this group of fish rather than a generalist feeding strategy. The hypothesis of the available resources partitioning was accepted only between the two genera (Diapterus and Eucinostomus), and among size classes of the Eucinostomus genus that seemed to follow the principle of limiting similarity. However, different size classes of D. rhombeus exhibited strong evidence of an intraspecific overlapping of the trophic niche. It seems that different processes related to use of the trophic niche dimension are structuring these closely related fish species.  相似文献

Pacific sardines (Sardinops sagax) are commercially fished in Canada, USA, and Mexico along approximately 5000 km of coastal waters that experience a wide range of temperatures. Trinational management of the species can be problematic because the connectivity between spawning, recruitment, stock residency, and migration in some years may not be well predicted. Oxygen isotopic value of otoliths (δ18Ootolith) has been used to infer stock residency and movement of fish populations within regions, but few studies have used laboratory data to establish a predictive temperature model to validate δ18Ootolith values of wild fish. We conducted a growth experiment with juveniles at different temperatures using Southern California Bight (SCB) seawater to test the assumption that Pacific sardine otoliths accurately record environmental water temperature in the presence of constant salinity. Sardine δ18Ootolith values were significantly and negatively correlated with temperature according to the linear model:
δ18Ootolith(‰)−δ18Owater(‰)=−0.132(±0.003 SE)×Temperature(°C)+2.455(±0.043 SE)  相似文献

This study was carried out in southwestern Caspian Sea coastal area to elucidate demersal bony fishes distribution and abundance. Twenty two species were found in shore line, which belong to 6 families. In deeper waters down to 7 meters only 5 species of Gobiidae and 1 species of Syngnathidae were identified. Two species Neogobius caspius and N. pallasi were the main components of demersal fishes; however in some regions Rutilus caspicus, Rutilus kutum and Liza spp. were dominated. Most places were dominantly occupied by Atherina boyeri, which had the highest abundance among the pelagic fishes. Conversely, the Ponticola gorlap, N. melanostomus and Proterorhinus nasalis showed the lowest abundances (less than 1 ind./100 m2). Benthophilus stellatus and P. nasali had the lowest niche overlaps with other species. Both of these two species and P. gorlap are suggested to be classified as endangered or vulnerable species based on their low abundance. The distribution of Syngnathus abaster depends on algae, while algae grow up into the stony construction of the coastal line. A negative insignificant correlation was observed between pelagic and demersal fish abundances. The commercial fisheries data of 76 beach seines in our study area during 2002–2013 was compared with our results on fish abundance and species composition. More than 93% of total fish catch constituted Liza spp. and Rutilus kutum. The relationship between the abundance and distribution of the studied species, and the restocking activities performed by Iranian fisheries organization are discussed. The high abundance and distribution of small size fish in tidal zone could be related to the distribution of crustacean, which provide a good source of food for these fish species.  相似文献

In two apple cultivars, fruit set was due to primigenic dominance within the annual shoot in areas with insufficient winter chilling while positional dominance took precedence when chilling was sufficient.

Abstract

The purpose of our study was to use fruit set and inflorescence size to characterize the positional (position along the shoot) and/or temporal (relative time of budburst and flowering) influences on competition between reproductive laterals within an annual shoot. The relative time of budburst and flowering, and the relative position within the shoot of reproductive buds were recorded on 2-year-old shoots of ‘Granny Smith’ and ‘Golden Delicious’ apple (Malus × domestica (Borkh.)) trees. The trees were grown at two locations in South Africa, a cool area, Koue Bokkeveld, and a warm area, Warm Bokkeveld, with sufficient and insufficient winter chilling, respectively. Inflorescence size (leaf number, leaf area, and flower number) did not differ temporally or with position. For both cultivars, fruit set in the cool area was acrotonic and independent of relative flowering time, while it was more influenced by temporal (primigenic) dominance in the warm area. Therefore, there is a clear positional advantage within the shoot to fruit set in cool areas (i.e., better local climate conditions for the growing fruit), while there is a clear temporal advantage (first bud to burst sets a fruit), or a “first come, first serve” approach to fruit set, in warm areas, which have limited and delayed budbreak. Inflorescence size and fruit set indicate a separation of environmental (degree of winter chilling) and innate factors in competition among reproductive buds along the 2-year-old annual shoot.  相似文献

Biological features of the seven abundant commercial species—the Pacific halibut Hippoglossus stenolepis, the Greenland halibut Reinhardtius hippoglossoides, the Alaska plaice Pleuronectes quadrituberculatus, the northern rock sole Lepidopsetta polyxystra, the yellowfin sole Limanda aspera, the flathead sole Hippoglossoides elassodon, and the Bering flounder H. robustus (Pleuronectidae)—have been studied for a 20-year period (1995?2015). These species are present in the northwestern Bering Sea in the summer–autumn season; they form the gatherings in Olyutorsky-Navarin region. The size-weight spectra of the fish caught by different fishing gear has been analyzed, the peculiarities of the linear growth and the weight gain, as well as the spawning period and scale and the spawning conditions, have been described. The largest halibut specimens have been registered in the bottom setlines and gill nets, while flounders were in snurrevad catches; the smallest specimens have been observed in trawl catches. The abundant year-class in most of the studied species is seen well on the long-term plots of the fish size spectra and is tracked by the decrease of their biological parameters. The species that demand vast growing grounds (Pacific halibut, Alaska plaice, northern rock sole, and yellowfin sole) are characterized by a smaller average body size of the fish sampled in the coastal waters due to the prevalence of the young specimens in this area.  相似文献

We identified, fine mapped, and physically anchored a dominant spot blotch susceptibility gene Scs6 to a 125 kb genomic region containing the Mla locus on barley chromosome 1H.

Abstract

Spot blotch caused by Cochliobolus sativus is an important disease of barley, but the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance and susceptibility to the disease are not well understood. In this study, we identified and mapped a gene conferring susceptibility to spot blotch caused by the pathotype 2 isolate (ND90Pr) of C. sativus in barley cultivar Bowman. Genetic analysis of F1 and F2 progeny as well as F3 families from a cross between Bowman and ND 5883 indicated that a single dominant gene (designated as Scs6) conferred spot blotch susceptibility in Bowman. Using a doubled haploid (DH) population derived from a cross between Calicuchima-sib (resistant) and Bowman-BC (susceptible), we confirmed that Scs6, contributed by Bowman-BC, was localized at the same locus as the previously identified spot blotch resistance allele Rcs6, which was contributed by Calicuchima-sib and mapped on the short arm of chromosome 1H. Using a genome-wide putative linear gene index of barley (Genome Zipper), 13 cleaved amplified polymorphism markers were developed from 11 flcDNA and two EST sequences and mapped to the Scs6/Rcs6 region on a linkage map constructed with the DH population. Further fine mapping with markers developed from barley genome sequences and F2 recombinants derived from Bowman?×?ND 5883 and Bowman?×?ND B112 crosses delimited Scs6 in a 125 kb genomic interval harboring the Mla locus on the reference genome of barley cv. Morex. This study provides a foundational step for further cloning of Scs6 using a map-based approach.

Estuaries are composed of multiple interconnected habitat types used by transient fish species during their period of estuarine residency. Structural marsh management restricts habitat connectivity and impedes the movement of fishes among these habitat types by limiting access via water control structures (WCSs) between the managed area and the rest of the estuary. While some general information on fish passage rates is available, species-specific information on passage through WCSs is lacking for salt marsh fishes. We monitored tagged fishes from March 2012 through November 2013 using passive integrated transponder antenna arrays at two identical WCSs in the Calcasieu Lake estuary, Louisiana, USA, to assess the effect of slotted WCSs on fish behavior. A total of 420 individuals of 15 species was tagged and released at the WCSs; of these, 145 individuals representing 11 species were later detected at the WCSs. Five species comprised most (93%) of the detected individuals: Elops saurus (n = 60), Mugil cephalus (n = 43), Sciaenops ocellatus (n = 20), Pogonias cromis (n = 7), and Ariopsis felis (n = 5). Passage rates were low, with most of the observed fishes (n = 80) passing only once through the structures. Other than E. saurus, which was only observed migrating out of the managed marsh, no clear pattern in swimming direction was observed for the other species. Detected species were all present primarily during the summer and fall, however, diel activity at the structures varied by species. The WCSs in our study area appeared to attract and congregate fishes, functioning more like ecological hotspots, rather than simply facilitating fish passage.  相似文献

Cardinal fish are commercially valuable species. In the Colombian Caribbean Sea E. occidentalis and E. pandionis occurred in 37and 35% of tows during a research trawl survey (>200 m), respectively and the biology of these vulnerable species is unknown. The aim of this work is to describe the spatial distribution patterns of biomass, size structure and morphometric relationships of E. occidentalis and E. pandionis in deep waters of the Colombian Caribbean Sea. The samples were collected by trawling in depths between 200 and 550 m. No statistical differences were found in size by sexes in both species. In female and male E. occidentalis the growth was isometric, while in female and male E. pandionis it was positive allometric. E. occidentalis occurred mainly in the northern zone of Colombian Caribbean Sea, with highest aggregations off Santa Marta and Riohacha. E. pandionis was distributed in the northern area between Santa Marta and Riohacha and in the southern area between Cartagena and Morrosquillo Gulf. However, before the exploitation of these species is considered, further research is required to determine basic life history traits, such as growth, reproduction, recruitment, and mortality.  相似文献

Tan spot susceptibility is conferred by multiple interactions of necrotrophic effector and host sensitivity genes.

Abstract

Tan spot of wheat, caused by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis, is an important disease in almost all wheat-growing areas of the world. The disease system is known to involve at least three fungal-produced necrotrophic effectors (NEs) that interact with the corresponding host sensitivity (S) genes in an inverse gene-for-gene manner to induce disease. However, it is unknown if the effects of these NE–S gene interactions contribute additively to the development of tan spot. In this work, we conducted disease evaluations using different races and quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis in a wheat recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from a cross between two susceptible genotypes, LMPG-6 and PI 626573. The two parental lines each harbored a single known NE sensitivity gene with LMPG-6 having the Ptr ToxC sensitivity gene Tsc1 and PI 626573 having the Ptr ToxA sensitivity gene Tsn1. Transgressive segregation was observed in the population for all races. QTL mapping revealed that both loci (Tsn1 and Tsc1) were significantly associated with susceptibility to race 1 isolates, which produce both Ptr ToxA and Ptr ToxC, and the two genes contributed additively to tan spot susceptibility. For isolates of races 2 and 3, which produce only Ptr ToxA and Ptr ToxC, only Tsn1 and Tsc1 were associated with tan spot susceptibility, respectively. This work clearly demonstrates that tan spot susceptibility in this population is due primarily to two NE–S interactions. Breeders should remove both sensitivity genes from wheat lines to obtain high levels of tan spot resistance.

Fish lice (Argulus spp; family Argulidae) are branchiuran crustaceans that parasitize both marine and freshwater fishes. Argulus spp can be a major threat to fish health, because heavy infestations can cause significant morbidity and mortality. In addition, fish lice are known to be the vehicle for other fish diseases. During rounds at our facility, Argulus japonicus was collected from the caudal and anal fins of 3 goldfish (Carassius auratus). These goldfish were asymptomatic, and no additional cases were noted after manual removal of the lice. As soon as any Argulus organisms are identified, management and treatment are recommended because infections can escalate rapidly. Currently, there are no FDA-approved drugs for the control and treatment of this parasite, but several chemicals including organophosphates and diflubenzuron have been used with success. The screening and quarantine of incoming fish is the best way to avoid a facility-wide Argulus infestation.Fish lice (Argulus spp) are members of a large group of branchiuran crustaceans that infest and cause disease in fish. More than 100 different species of Argulus are distributed worldwide.12 The 3 most studied species—Argulus foliaceus, A. japonicus, and A. coregoni—are found in freshwater systems.12 Argulus lice have compound eyes, a suctorial proboscis, 2 anteroventral prominent sucking discs that serve as attachment organs, 4 pairs of thoracic swimming legs, and a laterally expanded carapace that forms respiratory alae.2Argulus japonicus is native to Asia, where its typical hosts, goldfish (Carassius auratus) and common koi carp (Cyprinus carpio) are also located.6 In the United States, A. japonicus is present in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Washington, and Wisconsin.6 It is suspected that A. japonicus has been transported around the world unintentionally, with stocks of ornamental fish, particularly koi carp.6 During rounds at our facility, the branchiuran parasite A. japonicus was collected from the caudal and anal fins of 3 goldfish (Carassius auratus).Argulus spp can be a major threat to fish health. Heavy infestations of this parasite can cause significant morbidity and mortality.3,6 In addition, Argulus lice have been known to be the vehicle for other fish pathogens, including Rhabdovirus carpio, larval nematodes, and the fungus Saprolegnia.1,4 Fish without visible lice may show nonspecific signs of infestation, including spot or pinpoint hemorrhages, anemia, fin and scale loss, increased mucus production, lethargy, erratic swimming, and poor body condition.12 Fish may rub against surfaces in an attempt to relieve irritation or to remove the parasites.12 In some cases, there may be no obvious signs of disease other than presence of the parasite.12  相似文献

Hypoxia events, or low dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions, occur frequently in North Carolina estuaries during the summer. These events may have harmful effects on important fish stocks, including spot (Leiostomus xanthurus) and Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus), but their consequences are not well understood. We investigated direct mortality due to hypoxia in juvenile spot and Atlantic menhaden to determine how the extent of mortality varies with the severity of hypoxia and the duration of exposure, and to explore how vulnerability to hypoxia changes across species, fish size, and temperature.Atlantic menhaden and spot were tested at two temperatures, 25 and 30 °C, and three dissolved oxygen concentrations, 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2 ppm. Survival analyses were performed on the data relating survival rate of each species to dissolved oxygen concentration, duration of exposure, fish size, and temperature. The data were analyzed using an LC50 approach for comparative purposes, and 12-h LC50 estimates ranged from 0.9 to 1.1 ppm O2. Spot and menhaden exposed to 1.2 ppm O2 showed no mortality in 24 h at 25 °C, and only 30-40% mortality at 30 °C. In contrast, both species experienced 100% mortality in 2-6 h at 0.6 ppm O2. There was an effect of size on hypoxia tolerance, with small spot being less tolerant than large spot, while the converse size effect was observed for menhaden. Spot were consistently less tolerant to hypoxia than menhaden and both species were less tolerant to hypoxia at 30 °C than at 25 °C. Preliminary experiments showed a 24-h acclimation to sublethal levels of hypoxia significantly reduced mortality upon subsequent exposure to lethal hypoxia concentrations. Our results indicate that direct mortality due to hypoxia will vary with species, size, and temperature, but will likely only be substantial when these species are exposed to oxygen concentrations less than about 1 ppm O2. Given the severity of hypoxia necessary to cause mortality and the ability of fish to behaviorally avoid hypoxia, direct mortality due to hypoxia may have limited impacts on fish population dynamics. Therefore, the greatest effects due to hypoxia may be caused by the stress imposed by sublethal hypoxic conditions alone or in concert with other stressors, or by indirect effects incurred by avoiding hypoxic areas.  相似文献

The size of the territory defended by the grazing fish ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, often increases with decreasing intruder pressure. This territorial extension occurs even after additional growth of the fish reaches a plateau due to a surplus supply of algal food. This raises questions about the ecological advantages of defending an apparently enlarged territory. Enclosures were used to carry out observations on fish maintained as: (i) individuals with algae attached to the whole bottom area (2.4m2); (ii) individuals with algae covering 0.8m2; and (iii) with three conspecifics (competitive use) with algae attached to 2.4m2. In the competitive use enclosures, one (occasionally two) fish that exclusively foraged the area appeared in each of the groups. Algal resources were sufficiently renewable that no significant difference in growth rate was detected between the dominants of the competitive groups and the two types of solitary enclosures, indicating that the defended area supplied algal resources that exceeded the dominants ability to grow. All the territorial holders realized an increase in relative body weight, suggesting the occurrence of inhibition, which corresponds to Verners concept of superterritory. However, as inferred from the pheophytin/chlorophylla ratios, algae within a territory showed less senescence, perhaps owing to cropping by the dominant, and this was considered to be an adaptive response by the fish to an unpredictable food supply. In conclusion, the ayu conditionally defends a territory for long-term benefits, and inhibition is a consequence of facultative territory size and not a cause of it.  相似文献

Based on the materials of investigations conducted for 20 years (1995?2015), the features of biology of the common fish species of the family Cottidae from the northwestern Bering Sea are studied. These species are found during summer and fall in the waters of the Olyutorsky-Navarin region. The size–age parameters of the fishes collected with different fishing gears, as well as the features of their body length and body weight dynamics, spawning time, and spawning conditions, are described. The largest exemplars of shorthorn sculpin Myoxocephalus verrucosus and staghorn sculpins, armorhead sculpin Gymnocanthus galeatus and G. detrisus, are recorded in the catches of snurrevads, while the fishes caught in trawls are characterized by smaller size. Interannual variability of the size composition of the fish is related to the abundance of certain generations or to the fishery directed to different associations of sculpins. In the coastal waters, comparatively low average body size is usual for the majority of common sculpin species (with the exception of lords, yellow Irish lord H. jordani and Gilbert’s Irish lord H. gilberti) because of the dominance of juveniles.  相似文献

The negative association between the I - 3 gene and increased sensitivity to bacterial spot is due to linkage drag (not pleiotropy) and may be remedied by reducing the introgression size.

Abstract

Fusarium wilt is one of the most serious diseases of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) throughout the world. There are three races of the pathogen (races 1, 2 and 3), and the deployment of three single, dominant resistance genes corresponding to each of these has been the primary means of controlling the disease. The I-3 gene was introgressed from S. pennellii and confers resistance to race 3. Although I-3 provides effective control, it is negatively associated with several horticultural traits, including increased sensitivity to bacterial spot disease (Xanthomonas spp.). To test the hypothesis that this association is due to linkage with unfavorable alleles rather than to pleiotropy, we used a map-based approach to develop a collection of recombinant inbred lines varying for portions of I-3 introgression. Progeny of recombinants were evaluated for bacterial spot severity in the field for three seasons, and disease severities were compared between I-3 introgression haplotypes for each recombinant. Results indicated that increased sensitivity to bacterial spot is not associated with the I-3 gene, but rather with an upstream region of the introgression. A survey of public and private inbred lines and hybrids indicates that the majority of modern I-3 germplasm contains a similarly sized introgression for which the negative association with bacterial spot likely persists. In light of this, it is expected that the development and utilization of a reduced I-3 introgression will significantly improve breeding efforts for resistance to Fusarium wilt race 3.

A previous genomewide association study (GWAS) identified SNP markers associated with propensity to migrate of rainbow and steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in a connected population with free access to the ocean in Upper Yakima River (UYR) and a population in Upper Mann Creek (UMC) that has been sequestered from its access to the ocean for more than 50 years. Applying genomic heritability estimation using the same dataset, we found that smoltification in the UYR population were almost completely determined by additive effects, with 95.5% additive heritability and 4.5% dominance heritability, whereas smoltification in the UMC population had substantial dominance effects, with 0% additive heritability and 39.3% dominance heritability. Dominance test detected one SNP marker (R30393) with significant dominance effect on smoltification (P = 1.98 × 10−7). Genomic-predicted additive effects completely separated migratory and nonmigratory fish in the UYR population, whereas genomic-predicted dominance effects achieved such complete separation in the UMC population. The UMC population had higher genomic additive and dominance correlations than the UYR population, and fish between these two populations had the least genomic correlations. These results suggested that blocking the free access to the ocean may have reduced genetic diversity and increased genomic similarity associated with the early life-history transition related to propensity to migrate.  相似文献

The gene actions for yield and its attributes and their inheritance pattern based on five parameter model have been explored in four single crosses (NBIHT-5 × NBIHT-6, NBIHT-5 × NBMHT-1, NBMHT-1 × NBIHT-6 and NBMHT-2 × NBMHT-1) obtained using thebaine rich pure lines of opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) for three consecutive generations. All the traits showed nonallelic mode of interaction, however, dominance effect (h) was more pronounced for all the traits except thebaine and papaverine. The dominance × dominance (l) effects were predominant over additive × additive (i) for all traits in all the four crosses except for papaverine. The seed and opium yield, and its contributing traits inherited quantitatively. The fixable gene effects (d) and (i) were lower in magnitude than nonfixable (h) and (l) gene effects. The estimates of heterosis were also higher in comparison to the respective parents which suggested preponderance of dominance gene action for controlling most of the traits. The phenotypic coefficient of variation was marginally higher than those of genotypic coefficient of variation for all the traits. The traits thebaine, narcotine, morphine and opium yield had high heritability coupled with high genetic advance. The leaf number, branches per plant and stem diameter showed positive correlation with opium and seed yields. The selection of plants having large number of leaves, branches and capsules with bigger size would be advantageous to enhance the yield potential.  相似文献
