Eggs of two small Australian lizards, Lampropholis guichenoti and Bassiana duperreyi, were incubated to hatching at 25 °C and 30 °C. Incubation periods were significantly longer at 25 °C in both species, and temperature had a greater effect on the incubation period of B. duperreyi (41.0 days at 25 °C; 23.1 days at 30 °C) than L. guichenoti (40.1 days at 25 °C; 27.7 days at 30 °C). Patterns of oxygen consumption were similar in both species at both temperatures, being sigmoidal in shape with a fall in the rate of oxygen consumption just prior to hatching. The higher incubation temperature resulted in higher peak and higher pre-hatch rates of oxygen consumption in both species. Total amount of oxygen consumed during incubation was independent of temperature in B. duperreyi, in which approximately 50 ml oxygen was consumed at both temperatures, but eggs of L. guichenoti incubated at 30 °C consumed significantly more (32.6 ml) than eggs incubated at 25 °C (28.5 ml). Hatchling mass was unaffected by either incubation temperature or the amount of water absorbed by eggs during incubation in both species. The energetic production cost of hatchling B. duperreyi (3.52 kJ · g−1) was independent of incubation temperature, whereas in L. guichenoti the production cost was greater at 30 °C (4.00 kJ · g−1) than at 25 °C (3.47 kJ · g−1). Snout-vent lengths and mass of hatchlings were unaffected by incubation temperature in both species, but hatchling B. duperreyi incubated at 30 °C had longer tails (29.3 mm) than those from eggs incubated at 25 °C (26.2 mm). These results indicate that incubation temperature can affect the quality of hatchling lizards in terms of embryonic energy consumption and hatchling morphology. Accepted: 27 January 2000  相似文献

  • 1 The significance of killer whale Orcinus orca predation on baleen whales (Mysticeti) has been a topic of considerable discussion and debate in recent years. Discourse has been constrained by poor understanding of predator‐prey dynamics, including the relative vulnerability of different mysticete species and age classes to killer whales and how these prey animals avoid predation. Here we provide an overview and analysis of predatory interactions between killer whales and mysticetes, with an emphasis on patterns of antipredator responses.
  • 2 Responses of baleen whales to predatory advances and attacks by killer whales appear to fall into two distinct categories, which we term the fight and flight strategies. The fight strategy consists of active physical defence, including self‐defence by single individuals, defence of calves by their mothers and coordinated defence by groups of whales. It is documented for five mysticetes: southern right whale Eubalaena australis, North Atlantic right whale Eubalaena glacialis, bowhead whale Balaena mysticetus, humpback whale Megaptera novaeangliae and grey whale Eschrichtius robustus. The flight strategy consists of rapid (20–40 km/h) directional swimming away from killer whales and, if overtaken and attacked, individuals do little to defend themselves. This strategy is documented for six species in the genus Balaenoptera.
  • 3 Many aspects of the life history, behaviour and morphology of mysticetes are consistent with their antipredator strategy, and we propose that evolution of these traits has been shaped by selection for reduced predation. Fight species tend to have robust body shapes and are slow but relatively manoeuvrable swimmers. They often calve or migrate in coastal areas where proximity to shallow water provides refuge and an advantage in defence. Most fight species have either callosities (rough and hardened patches of skin) or encrustations of barnacles on their bodies, which may serve (either primarily or secondarily) as weapons or armour for defence. Flight species have streamlined body shapes for high‐speed swimming and they can sustain speeds necessary to outrun pursuing killer whales (>15–20 km/h). These species tend to favour pelagic habitats and calving grounds where prolonged escape sprints from killer whales are possible.
  • 4 The rarity of observed successful attacks by killer whales on baleen whales, especially adults, may be an indication of the effectiveness of these antipredator strategies. Baleen whales likely offer low profitability to killer whales, relative to some other marine mammal prey. High‐speed pursuit of flight species has a high energetic cost and a low probability of success while attacks on fight species can involve prolonged handling times and a risk of serious injury.

Plants are able to plastically respond to their ubiquitously heterogeneous environments; however, little is known about the conditions under which plants are expected to avoid or confront their neighbors in dense stands, where heterogeneity is self-generated by non-uniform growth and feedback between plant interactions and stand heterogeneity. We studied the role of plasticity for spatial pattern-formation and the resulting stand-level fitness of clonal plants, assuming variable types of plastic behavior. Specifically, the adaptive values of behavior ranging from pure avoidance, to neutral and pure confrontation were assessed using a simulation model of stands of clonally growing plants with varying capacity of plastic behavior. The results demonstrated significant effects of the type of competitive behavior on mean final densities of single-species stands at equilibrium. Density was the lowest and aggregation was the highest in stands of purely confrontational plants, and density was highest in stands of neutral and purely avoiding plants. When competing against a neutral photometer (i.e. non-plastic but otherwise identical plant), the best competitors were plants that avoided their neighbors in 0.33–0.50 of the cases and were neutral otherwise. Differences in adaptive values of individual behaviors depended both on the distance over which the environmental structure (i.e. local density) was perceived, and on overall density. Density-independent ramet mortality profoundly changed the effectiveness of competitive behaviors. Under high levels of mortality, avoidance was the most effective and confrontation the least effective behavior. The results indicate that individual-based behaviors might affect higher organizational levels, and that their reciprocal interactions with resource levels and patchiness, and responsiveness to density-independent mortality might generate higher-order feedbacks that intricately affect the fate of individual ramets and the patterning of whole stands and communities.  相似文献

Adaptive radiation (AR), the product of rapid diversification of an ancestral species into novel adaptive zones, has become pivotal in our understanding of biodiversity. Although it has widely been accepted that predators may drive the process of AR by creating ecological opportunity (e.g., enemy‐free space), the role of predators as selective agents in defensive trait diversification remains controversial. Using phylogenetic comparative methods, we provide evidence for an “early burst” in the diversification of antipredator phenotypes in Cordylinae, a relatively small AR of morphologically diverse southern African lizards. The evolution of body armor appears to have been initially rapid, but slowed down over time, consistent with the ecological niche‐filling model. We suggest that the observed “early burst” pattern could be attributed to shifts in vulnerability to different types of predators (i.e., aerial versus terrestrial) associated with thermal habitat partitioning. These results provide empirical evidence supporting the hypothesis that predators or the interaction therewith might be key components of ecological opportunity, although the way in which predators influence morphological diversification requires further study.  相似文献

Direct interference competition between sympatric taxa affects habitat use and shelter-site selection in species within most major vertebrate lineages. However, studies on interspecific social interference in reptiles largely have been confined to research on interactions between non-native (invasive) species and native fauna. Does interspecific interference also influence habitat use within natural assemblages of reptiles? We studied five broadly sympatric species of viviparous montane skinks within the genera Egernia and Eulamprus in southeastern Australia. Previous work has shown strong interspecific overlap in abiotic attributes of shelter-sites for these taxa, but no joint occupancy of retreats. Laboratory trials in which we manipulated the identity of co-occurring lizards revealed frequent displacement from “preferred” (hotter) shelters, with interspecific interactions more intense than intraspecific conflicts. The five species displayed a linear interspecific dominance hierarchy, with larger species displacing smaller taxa. Field manipulations confirmed that interspecific interactions between these species affect shelter-site use. We conclude that direct agonistic encounters between individuals of different species strongly influence habitat use by lizards within this assemblage.  相似文献

Defense priming is defined as increased readiness of defense induction. A growing body of literature indicates that plants (or intact parts of a plant) are primed in anticipation of impending environmental stresses, both biotic and abiotic, and upon the following stimulus, induce defenses more quickly and strongly. For instance, some plants previously exposed to herbivore‐inducible plant volatiles (HIPVs) from neighboring plants under herbivore attack show faster or stronger defense activation and enhanced insect resistance when challenged with secondary insect feeding. Research on priming of antiherbivore defense has been limited to the HIPV‐mediated mechanism until recently, but significant advances were made in the past three years, including non‐HIPV‐mediated defense priming, epigenetic modifications as the molecular mechanism of priming, and others. It is timely to consider the advances in research on defense priming in the plant–insect interactions.  相似文献

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of whole body heat in combination with exercise on the oxidative stress and acute phase immune response. Nine male endurance-trained athletes voluntarily performed two running bouts of 45 minutes at 75–80% of VO2max in a climatic chamber in two conditions: cold and hot humid environment. Leukocyte, neutrophil and basophil counts significantly rose after exercise in both environments; it was significantly greater in the hot environment. Lymphocyte and neutrophil antioxidant enzyme activities and carbonyl index significantly increased or decreased after exercise only in the hot environment, respectively. The lymphocytes expression of catalase, Hsp72 and CuZn-superoxide dismutase was increased in the hot environment and Sirt3 in the cold environment, mainly during recovery. In conclusion, the increased core body temperature results in the acute phase immune response associated to intense exercise and in the immune cell adaptations to counteract the oxidative stress situation.  相似文献

Although most species of animals examined to date exhibit Bergmann'sclines in body size, squamates tend to exhibit opposing patterns.Squamates might exhibit reversed Bergmann's clines because theytend to behaviorally regulate their body temperature effectively;the outcome of this thermoregulation is that warmer environmentsenable longer daily and annual durations of activity than coolerenvironments. Lizards of the genus Sceloporus provide an opportunityto understand the factors that give rise to contrasting thermalclines in body size because S. undulatus exhibits a standardBergmann's cline whereas S. graciosus exhibits a reverse Bergmann'scline. Interestingly, rapid growth by individuals of both speciesinvolves adjustments of physiological processes that enablemore efficient use of food. Patterns of adult body size arelikely the evolutionary consequence of variation in juvenilesurvivorship among populations. In S. undulatus, delayed maturationat a relatively large body size is exhibited in cooler environmentswhere juveniles experience higher survivorship, resulting ina Bergmann's cline. In S. graciosus, high juvenile survivorshipis not consistently found in cooler environments, resultingin no cline or a reversed Bergmann's cline, i.e., geographicpatterns in body size aren't necessarily produced by naturalselection. Thus, discerning the mechanistic links between thethermal physiology of an organism and environment-specific ratesof mortality will be critical to understanding the evolutionof body size in relation to environmental temperature.  相似文献

Animals typically respond to stressful stimuli such as handling by increasing core body temperature. However, small birds in cold environments have been found to decrease body temperature (Tb) when handled over longer periods, although there are no data extending beyond the actual handling event in such birds. We therefore measured both the initial Tb decrease during ringing and standardized Tb sampling, and subsequent recovery of Tb after this handling protocol in wild Great Tits Parus major roosting in nestboxes in winter. Birds reduced their Tb by 2.3 °C during c. 4 min of handling. When birds were returned to their nestboxes after handling, Tb decreased by a further 1.9 °C over c. 2 min, reaching a Tb of 34.6 °C before taking 20 min to rewarm to 2.5 °C above their initial Tb. The Tb reduction during handling could be a consequence of increased heat loss rate from disrupted plumage insulation, whereas Tb reduction after handling might reflect reduced heat production. These are important factors to consider when handling small birds in the cold.  相似文献

Rectal and vaginal temperature responses of the Savanna Brown goat indigenous to the Nigerian guinea savanna were determined during the harmattan and the hot-dry season. Measurements were made at 06:00h and at 14:00h after 8h exposure to field conditions. At the 06:00h measurements during the harmattan, all animals were observed to shiver. A significant (P<0.01) positive correlation was found between rectal (Tre) and vaginal temperatures. During the harmattan, mean Tre was 38.2C at 06:00h and 39.7C at 14:00h; the mean difference, Tre was 1.5C. During the hot-dry season, Tre at 06:00h was 38.1C, and at 14:00h, 38.7; Tre was 0.6C. It is concluded that the harmattan is thermally more stressful than the hot-dry season and that passive thermolability may not be an important mechanism in the Savanna Brown goat in adaptation to thermal stress.  相似文献
