The strepsipteran endoparasite Xenos vesparum alters the immunocompetence of its host, the paper wasp Polistes dominulus 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It is unexplained how strepsipteran insects manipulate the physiology of their hosts in order to undergo endoparasitic development without being entrapped by the innate immune defences of the host. Here we present pioneering work that aimed to explore for the first time several components of the cellular and humoral immune response among immature stages of the paper wasp Polistes dominulus, in both unparasitized insects and after infection by the strepsipteran endoparasite Xenos vesparum. We carried out hemocyte counts, phagocytosis assays in vitro and antibacterial response in vivo. On the whole, hemocyte load does not seem to be drastically affected by parasitization: a non-significant increase in hemocyte numbers was observed in parasitized wasps as respect to control, while the two dominant hemocyte types were present with similar proportions in both groups. On the other hand, phagocytosis was significantly reduced in hemocytes from parasitized wasps while the antibacterial response seemed to be less effective in control. These somewhat unexpected results are discussed, along with the implications of a multiple approach in immune response studies. 相似文献

Rats could accumulate food pellets by responding on one lever, and then gain access to them by responding on a second lever N times (experiment 1), by ceasing to respond on the first lever for D seconds (experiment 2), or by making a single, vigorous response of force W on the second lever (experiment 3). The design may be viewed as an analogue of central place foraging. As N (distance), D (time), or W (effort) increased, load (the average number of pellets accumulated before they were eaten) also increased. It appeared that delay mediated the effect of the other independent variables. A simple model of central place foraging was shown to accommodate the data. 相似文献

Orians & Pearson (1979) considered the optimal foraging strategies of ‘central place foragers’, animals that repeatedly return with their food to a fixed location. We tested some of their predictions on eastern chipmunks, Tamias striatus. The rate of cheek pouch loading declines as the pouches fill; thus the optimal load size may vary, depending on the time required to travel between the feeding site and burrow. This ‘travel time’ may also affect the choice of feeding site. A method was developed to test this, and preliminary results confirm the hypothesis. Methodological and theoretical implications of these empirical results are discussed. 相似文献

Worker reproduction and related behavior in 2 orphan colonies ofPolistes jadwigae, one of which had been maintained by a queen and 5 artificially introduced alien workers, were observed. After the queen loss, a dominance hierarchy was established among workers, and several workers laid eggs without physical interference from other workers. Only males emerged from worker-laid eggs, however, a few new queens were produced from queen-laid eggs. Investment sex ratio of queenright (=normal) colonies (0.27) fell between the 2 theoretical values, corresponding to worker control (0.20 or 0.18) and queen control (0.48 or 0.46) of the sex ratio, both being calculated by considering the excess of males produced in the orphan colonies. 相似文献

Eusocial polistine wasps comprise species in which new colonies are founded by single wasps or groups of foundresses (independent founding species) or by swarms of queens and workers (swarm founding species). The first ones have relatively small societies generally comprising only one egg-laying queen, while the second ones have larger colonies where several egg-laying queens are usually present. These differences in social organisation are expected to influence the acceptance threshold of conspecifics in the colony and the intra-colony communication modalities. In this paper, we showed by field experiments that Ropalidia opifex (a swarm founding species) presents a good discrimination between alien and nestmate conspecifics. Moreover by GC/MS, we identified 19 cuticular hydrocarbons in this species, and we demonstrated that cuticular signature in this species depends mainly on colony membership, not showing any correlation with fertility. 相似文献

In cooperatively breeding vertebrates, the existence of individuals that help to raise the offspring of non-relatives is well established, but unrelated helpers are less well known in the social insects. Eusocial insect groups overwhelmingly consist of close relatives, so populations where unrelated helpers are common are intriguing. Here, we focus on Polistes dominula—the best-studied primitively eusocial wasp, and a species in which nesting with non-relatives is not only present but frequent. We address two major questions: why individuals should choose to nest with non-relatives, and why such individuals participate in the costly rearing of unrelated offspring. Polistes dominula foundresses produce more offspring of their own as subordinates than when they nest independently, providing a potential explanation for co-founding by non-relatives. There is some evidence that unrelated subordinates tailor their behaviour towards direct fitness, while the role of recognition errors in generating unrelated co-foundresses is less clear. Remarkably, the remote but potentially highly rewarding chance of inheriting the dominant position appears to strongly influence behaviour, suggesting that primitively eusocial insects may have much more in common with their social vertebrate counterparts than has commonly been thought. 相似文献

In wasps, nutrition plays a vital role for colony cohesion and caste determination. However, there is no baseline data set for the nutritional levels of wasps during the different stages of the colony cycle. Here we examined the levels of carbohydrates, lipids, protein, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, and Zn in the wasp Polistes metricus at different stages of the wasp's lifecycle. Individuals were collected at the following stages (1) spring gynes, (2) foundress colonies, (3) early worker colonies, (4) late worker colonies, (5) emerging reproductives (gynes and males), (6) early fall reproductives, and (7) late fall reproductives. All eggs, larvae, pupae and adults were analyzed for their nutritional content to determine if there were any differences between the nutrient levels in the different castes and how these nutrients changed within a caste during its lifetime. The results show there are differences in macro and micronutrient levels between the reproductive females and workers during development. Gynes showed changes in nutrient levels during their lifetime especially as they changed roles from a solitary individual to a nesting queen. Males also showed distinct nutritional changes during their lifetime. The implications for these nutritional differences are discussed. 相似文献

This study provides the first molecular phylogeny of the social wasp subgenus Polistella (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Polistes) from Vietnam. Fragments of the mitochondrial COI and 16S rRNA genes were used to reconstruct the phylogenetic trees among 38 Polistes species plus two out-group species (Vespa soror du Buysson and Ropalidia fasciata (Fabricius)). Our results support the existence of several species-groups, including two that are congruent with the previous stigma and Stenopolistes groups defined on the basis of morphology. Moreover, we recovered a clade including the stigma group and the two species P. humilis and P. variabilis that was sister to all other species of Polistella. However, the results also challenged the definition of other groups of Polistella based on morphological data, as well as the definition of two species: P. brunus and P. affinis. This first study calls for further analyses including morphological characters to clarify the taxonomy and the classification of the group. 相似文献

Summary Five cases of the early emergence of males in a Japanese paper wasp,Polistes chinensis antennalis, in which male emerged together with the first group of workers, were described. In one case of the five where the queen
disappeared before the emergence of male, worker(s) produced female offspring.
The frequency of the nests where the early emergence of male was observed was 16.7% (5/30 nests). In two colonies, worker(s)
and/or queen chased off males. But in an orphan nest where worker(s) produced female offspring, the dominance order among
workers which was similar to that of colony without male was observed. The significance of the early emergence of male in
the social evolution of wasps was discussed. 相似文献

We isolated 13 microsatellite markers for the Japanese paper wasp Polistes chinensis antennalis. Null alleles were ruled out in the loci because we could detect polymerase chain reaction products for 578 haploid males. Our results indicate that these markers are excellent tools for the analysis of pedigrees within colonies for species with a complicated pedigree structure due to worker reproduction (male production by workers in queen‐right colonies). 相似文献

Regulation of wing muscle temperature is important for sustaining flight in many insects, and has been well studied in honeybees.
It has been much less well studied in wasps and has never been demonstrated in Polistes paper wasps. We measured thorax, head, and abdomen temperatures of inactive Polistes dominulus workers as they warmed after transfer from 8 to ~25°C ambient temperature, after removal from hibernacula, and after periods
of flight in a variable temperature room. Thorax temperature (T
th) of non-flying live wasps increased more rapidly than that of dead wasps, and T
th of some live wasps reached more than 2°C above ambient temperature (T
a), indicating endothermy. Wasps removed from hibernacula had body region temperatures significantly above ambient. The T
th of flying wasps was 2.5°C above ambient at T
a = 21°C, and at or even below ambient at T
a = 40°C. At 40°C head and abdomen temperatures were both more than 2°C below T
a, indicating evaporative cooling. We conclude that P. dominulus individuals demonstrate clear, albeit limited, thermoregulatory capacity. 相似文献

Although famously cooperative, social insect colonies harbour considerable potential for genetic conflict among colonymates. This conflict may be expressed behaviourally as aggression by workers. We investigated aggression in 34 colonies of the wasp Parachartergus colobopterus, by evaluating the characteristics of both instigators and victims of aggressive interactions. We estimated genetic relatedness and queen number using DNA microsatellites and found that workers and emerging females should be most in conflict over the caste of the latter when there are many queens on the nest. We found that aggressive interactions are more likely to involve older workers attacking either males or younger workers, and that victim and aggressor females have more ovarian development than randomly sampled colonymates. Moreover, mated females with low levels of ovarian development relative to active queens were also more likely to be aggressors and victims than were randomly sampled females. Aggression among females supports the hypothesis that older workers use aggression towards younger females as a means of policing the development of emerging females into queens. Workers also may use aggression to suppress the reproduction of some mated females. Our findings thus support the hypothesis that genetic conflicts of interest motivate worker aggression in swarm-founding wasp colonies. 相似文献

Recent explanations for the evolution of eusociality, focusing more on costs and benefits than relatedness, are largely untested. We validate one such model by showing that helpers in foundress groups of the paper wasp Polistes dominulus benefit from an insurance-based mechanism known as Assured Fitness Returns (AFRs). Experimental helper removals left remaining group members with more offspring than they would normally rear. Reduced groups succeeded in preserving the dead helpers' investment by rearing these extra offspring, even when helper removals occurred long before worker emergence. While helpers clearly gained from AFRs, offspring of lone foundresses failed after foundress death, so that AFRs represent a true advantage for helpers. Smaller, less valuable offspring were probably sacrificed to feed larger offspring, but reduced groups did not preferentially attract joiners or increase their foraging effort to compensate for their smaller workforce. We failed to detect a second insurance-based advantage, Survivorship Insurance, in which larger groups are less likely to fail than smaller groups. We suggest that through their use of small offspring as a food store to cope with temporary shortages, wasps may be less susceptible than vertebrates to offspring failure following the death of group members. 相似文献

A computer model of the searching activity of Cataglyphis bicolor (Fab.), based on quantitative data obtained in the field in Greece, was investigated. This ant searches for individual items of food (mainly dead arthropods) in the open on flat ground, on which its paths can be followed and mapped. The model was based on an analogy with molecular diffusion from a centre, suggested by the fact that the average distance of ants from the nest increased in proportion to the square root of time, up to a distance more than half the radius of a circle enclosing 90% of the search area. Actual behaviour was well described by a model in which individual ants went out for the first time to search in a direction determined at random. Subsequently they went out in a straight line in a direction and to a distance related to that of the previous find before commencing a semi-random search, on a path consisting of straight portions branching at random angles, with restriction on turns in a backward direction. Individual real ants search in restricted areas, commonly sectors centred on the nest. This behaviour was reproduced in the model as were quantitative aspects of the nest behaviour. Communication between individuals was not required in the model. 相似文献
