The variations in structural and timing principles underlying grooming are examined in the cricket Teleogryllus oceanicus. Two situations were studied: normal grooming and grooming that appears with locomotion in an unfamiliar environment. Normal grooming appears to be controlled by a hierarchy of random processes. Transitions between grooming acts are based on anatomical proximity, while hierarchical clusters are based on body regions. Acts per bout, acts per cluster, and clusters per bout are all random variables that follow geometric distributions; pauses between acts are also randomly distributed. In the unfamiliar environment, time-sharing appears to control the transition between locomotion and grooming. The study shows how a hierarchy can account for timing as well as structure in a behavioural sequence and how control principles change with variations in functional priority.  相似文献

Structural rules for grooming are examined in the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus). Two types of bouts are found: short bouts with no predictable temporal pattern and long bouts with some degree of periodic occurrence. Transitions in long bouts are mostly based on anatomical proximity. Grooming movements cluster together according to function and body region. Evidence for hierarchical organization obtained by clustering is confirmed by the proportion of occurrence of movements in long and short bouts. Individual birds are similar enough on measures of occurrence, transition and hierarchica structure for pooling of subjects to be justified; this suggests that the organizational rules found here are to a large extent species-typical.  相似文献

The parcelling model of reciprocity predicts that grooming partners will alternate between giving and receiving grooming within grooming bouts, and that each partner will perform approximately as much grooming as it receives within each bout (‘time matching’). Models of allogrooming based on biological markets theory predict that individuals of lower dominance rank will exchange grooming for tolerance from high-rankers, and therefore an inverse relation will be found between grooming partners' dominance rank distance and how closely they match each other's grooming contributions within each bout. We used weighted logistic regression and weighted least-squares regression to test these predictions using data from female white-faced capuchins, Cebus capucinus, and bonnet macaques, Macaca radiata. Only 5-7% of macaque grooming bouts, and 12-27% of capuchin grooming bouts, were reciprocated. However, (1) the duration of grooming by the first groomer significantly predicted whether the groomee would reciprocate at all, and (2) when bouts were reciprocated, the duration of grooming by the first groomer significantly predicted the duration of grooming by the second groomer. Grooming was most balanced among females of similar dominance ranks. Both the time-matching and rank-related effects were weak, although significant. These results indicate that although some form of time matching may be a general characteristic of grooming in female-bonded primate species, time matching accounts for relatively little of the variation in the distribution of grooming within bouts. We also draw attention to weighted regression as a technique that avoids pseudoreplication while using all available data.  相似文献

The spectacled warbler (Sylvia conspicillata) is a small passerine with a patchy distribution throughout the circum-Mediterranean region, including the North Atlantic archipelagos of Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde. Here we characterize the species song structure on the island of Fuerteventura, quantifying repertoire size, inter- and intra-individual spectrographic variation, to determine whether acoustic variation occurred within an island population. Male song display was organized in song bouts of a variable number of song phrases, which in turn were made up of 4–69 syllables. We classified syllable types to derive a measure of repertoire size (number of different syllables) per song bout, and then used rarefaction methods to calculate the estimated repertoire size for our population of males. Three categories of song bout length were considered in analyses: short song bouts of 10 phrases, average bouts of 19 phrases and long bouts of ≥ 29 phrases. The observed and estimated repertoire size per male (between 43 and 126 syllables per male) increased with song bout duration, although the relationship was not significant for the estimated values. To test whether songs could be individually specific, we measured 11 spectrotemporal parameters of the song. A discriminant analysis using these variables performed poorly in classifying songs to the individuals that uttered them, but we found less variation in the individual than in the population for three out of the 11 variables. These individually specific variables, involving the first or the most common syllable of the song, the trill, were the duration of the first syllable of the phrase, the duration and the dominant frequency of the trill syllable. Our study emphasizes the complexity of spectacled warbler songs, in which males continuously add novel syllables over the entire song bout. This complexity appears to be determined by individual innovation capabilities rather than by the behaviour of copying neighbour repertoires, since songs of close birds were not more similar than songs from far-away territories.  相似文献

We analyzed the effects of dopamine signaling on the temporal organization of rest and activity in Drosophila melanogaster. Locomotor behaviors were recorded using a video-monitoring system, and the amounts of movements were quantified by using an image processing program. We, first, confirmed that rest bout durations followed long-tailed (i.e., power-law) distributions, whereas activity bout durations did not with a strict method described by Clauset et al. We also studied the effects of circadian rhythm and ambient temperature on rest bouts and activity bouts. The fraction of activity significantly increased during subjective day and at high temperature, but the power-law exponent of the rest bout distribution was not affected. The reduction in rest was realized by reduction in long rest bouts. The distribution of activity bouts did not change drastically under the above mentioned conditions. We then assessed the effects of dopamine. The distribution of rest bouts became less long-tailed and the time spent in activity significantly increased after the augmentation of dopamine signaling. Administration of a dopamine biosynthesis inhibitor yielded the opposite effects. However, the distribution of activity bouts did not contribute to the changes. These results suggest that the modulation of locomotor behavior by dopamine is predominantly controlled by changing the duration of rest bouts, rather than the duration of activity bouts.  相似文献

Kin-directed affiliative behavior is widespread in social animals and kin selection theory suggests that such behavior increases fitness of the performer and is thus adaptive. Allopreening in birds is an altruistic behavior as it involves cleaning body parts that cannot be cleaned by self-preening. In this study, we investigated the effects of genetic relatedness on allopreening behavior among juveniles of the Bengalese finch Lonchura striata domestica shortly after the cessation of parental care. Nestlings were cross-fostered in order to distinguish the effects of genetic relatedness (sharing genetic parents) from the effects of familiarity (sharing rearing environment). Preening bouts toward siblings were more frequent and of longer duration than toward non-siblings. The frequency and duration of physical contact within a preening bout did not differ between siblings and non-siblings. In addition, the frequency and duration of preening bouts did not differ between the juveniles that were reared by the same foster parents and between those that were not. Our results suggest that Bengalese finch juveniles recognized siblings and performed affiliative behavior based on genetic similarity rather than familiarity.  相似文献

The temporal pattern of locomotor activity of single Drosophila melanogaster flies freely walking in small tubes is described. Locomotor activity monitored by a light gate has a characteristic time-course that depends upon age and the environmental conditions. Several methods are applied to assess the complexity of the temporal pattern. The pattern varies according to sex, genotype, age and environmental conditions (food; light). Activity occurs clustered in bouts. The intrinsic bout structure is quantified by four parameters: number of light gate passages (counts) per bout, duration of a bout, pause between two successive bouts and mean bout period. In addition, the distribution of the periods between light-gate crossings (inter-count intervals) as function of inter-count interval duration reveals a power law, suggesting that the overall distribution of episodes of activity and inactivity has a fractal structure. In the dark without food, the fractal dimension which represents a measure of the complexity of the pattern is sex, genotype and age specific. Fractality is abolished by additional sensory stimulation (food; light). We propose that time-course, bout structure and fractal dimension of the temporal pattern of locomotor activity describe different aspects of the fly's central pattern generator for locomotion and its motivational control. This study was designed to examine the nursing patterns and related behavior of young saiga raised by their dams. Four captive born lambs were observed at weekly intervals during continuous 14 h watches for the first 7 weeks of life. One-week-old lambs were found to nurse at an average rate of 1.1 bouts per hour and nursed for an average of 14.6 seconds per bout. This high nursing frequency and the average total daily nursing time of 242 seconds decreased rapidly with age. Saiga lambs sampled solid food as early as 4 days of age and were nearly dependent on solid food by the age of 7 weeks. Communal nursing, in which one or more lambs would nurse from an unrelated adult female while she nursed her own, was common. Grooming of the lamb by the dam was never seen except immediately following birth. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

This paper is about rules governing grooming sequences in blowflies. Time was divided exhaustively into eight grooming and two non-grooming states. Using a keyboard connected to a computer, the times of all transitions between states during 1 hr were recorded for each of six flies. There is a strong tendency for certain acts to alternate with others. A model of alternating choice ‘slots’ and determined slots is presented. Grooming acts fall into discrete bouts, each involving either the prothoracic legs or the metathoracic legs, but not both. A great majority of bouts contain an odd number of acts. The beginning and ending of a bout constitute a characteristic structure regardless of the length of the intervening middle period. Unconvincing evidence for hierarchical organization of grooming decisions is presented. Convincing evidence is presented that postural facilitation is involved in the control of grooming.  相似文献

An objective method for defining a play bout is derived and applied to data collected from six 143–146-day old captive marmosets living in family groups. Temporal patterns within and between play bouts are investigated. There is a tendency for play bouts to occur in sessions. Play sessions are terminated by short rather than long play bouts. The pattern of components within play bouts is nonrandom. Chasing tends not to be performed either at the beginning or at the end of a play bout. Typical latencies from play bout onset to the onset of components within the bout vary from one component to another. It is argued that mechanisms controlling social play must operate at two levels: at the level of the play session, and at the level of the play bout.  相似文献

To split behaviour into bouts, log-transform the intervals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Analysis of behaviour that is displayed in bouts depends crucially on quantitative estimates of bout criteria, that is, the lengths of the shortest intervals between bouts. Current methods estimate bout criteria by modelling the log-transformed (cumulative) frequency distributions of intervals between events. For analysis of feeding behaviour, these models will not result in biologically meaningful quantitative estimates (Tolkamp et al. 1998, Journal of Theoretical Biology194, 235-250). We proposed a method that models the frequency distribution of log-transformed interval lengths instead. Applying this method to a single data set showed that the log-transformed lengths of intervals between feeding events were distributed as two Gaussians. Here we test this model using a data set of 35 171 intervals between feeding that was obtained during an experiment with 38 cows in three dietary treatment groups. No meaningful bout criterion could be obtained for some individuals, which casts doubt on the general validity of the proposed model. Addition of a third log-normal improved the fit of the model and we hypothesized that this third population represents intervals including drinking. In a second experiment, we found the measurements to be consistent with this hypothesis. We obtained meaningful meal criteria for all individuals by fitting either a double, or a triple, log-normal model to the frequency distributions of the lengths of intervals between feeding. These log-normal models appear to be not only more biologically meaningful than log (cumulative) frequency models but also far more flexible. ABSTRACT

The peculiar acoustic structure of ultrasonic bouts of blind climbing rodents Typhlomys might provide insight on their potential function. We examined 1481 bouts consisting of 1-6 pulses; 49.7% of them were single-pulse bouts. Bout duration and inter-bout interval depended on the number of pulses per bout, whereas period from start of a previous bout to start of the next bout was constant (80.0±2.9 ms). Ultrasonic pulses (540 pulses measured in a subset of 234 bouts) were short (0.68±0.15 ms) sweeps with fundamental frequency slopes from 127.3±6.3 kHz to 64.1±4.6 kHz and peak frequency at 93.3±7.4 kHz, emitted within bouts with inter-pulse periods of 13.03±3.01 ms. Single pulses and start pulses of multi-pulse bouts were lower in frequency than other pulses of the bouts. In contrast, pulse duration was independent on pulse position within bout. Pulses of Typhlomys were reminiscent of echolocation calls of Murina and Myotis bats, but higher in frequency, much shorter, fainter, displayed a convex contour of frequency modulation and only the fundamental frequency band without harmonics and were organized in bouts, that is not characteristic for bat echolocation. Most probably, Typhlomys uses their ultrasonic pulses for call-based orientation during locomotion, including climbing and jumping among bush branches.  相似文献

Abstract.Tsetse flies probe more on a heated surface with a trace of uric acid than on one without. Uric acid is one of the components of human sweat and it elicits spike responses from taste hairs on the flies' legs. In this paper it is examined how heat from the surface and taste interact to affect the biting behaviour of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes Newstead 1910 (Diptera: Glossinidae) over successive days of food deprivation. The biting behaviour consists of bouts of probing, both ambulatory and stationary, intercalated with short hops of flight. The number of bouts increases over successive days, whereas the average bout duration does not. Although uric acid alone could not induce the flies to probe, in combination with surface heat it affected the flies greatly. Average bout duration was two‐fold that on a heated surface not treated with uric acid. The frequency of bouts was not affected by uric acid. These experiments and auxiliary ones on mechanoreceptive input and odours lead to the insight that the factors which affect biting behaviour can be viewed as a hierarchy. The hierarchy extends from those that affect the onset of biting to those that affect its course.  相似文献

The influence of temperature on the preening of foraging wasps (Paravespula vulgaris) collecting sucrose solution at an artificial food source is described. The temperature has an influence on the number of preening movements performed per unit time (= rate of preening) as well as on the spatial distribution of the preening movements. The rate of preening as a function of the temperature is explained in a quantitative manner using a diagram, which corresponds to the disinhibition hypothesis for displacement activities. This also holds true for the honeybee. The degree of disinhibition of the preening tendency does not determine the spatial distribution of the preening movements.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of a detailed analysis of 52 song bouts, recorded from 22 great tits, Parus major, during the dawn chorus. A song bout consists of a number of song bursts (called strophes) separated by periods of silence. High quality males, as measured by average strophe length, sang their bouts with a higher percentage performance time (i.e. the percentage of time spent singing in a bout), but the average number of strophes per bout was not related to male quality. In 31 of 52 bouts there was a systematic decrease in the percentage performance time throughout the bout. This was mainly caused by a prolongation of the pauses between the strophes, and sometimes by a shortening of the strophes. Both high and low quality males sang bouts with and without this decrease in the percentage performance time. Bouts that started with longer strophes and/or shorter inter-strophe pauses showed on average a more rapid decrease in the percentage performance time, and contained fewer strophes, than bouts that started with shorter strophes and/or longer inter-strophe pauses. After switching to another song type the males again used longer strophes and/or shorter inter-strophe pauses. An ‘anti-exhaustion’ hypothesis is proposed and discussed. This hypothesis gives a mainly causal explanation for the existence of song switching and song repertoires in passerine birds.  相似文献

Vocalizations occurring during play bouts were studied in 2 pairs of young male squirrel monkeys. Two main call types, one having four variants, are described. Vocalization rate varied with the type of ongoing behavior and with play bout duration, an association considered to be indicative of motivation to play. Structural differences also varied with bout duration and longer bouts had longer and more complex calls. In addition to providing direct information about motivation, vocalizations may have a metacommunicative function in alerting adult group members (not play partners) to the presence of playful activity.  相似文献

The relationships between muscle glycogenolysis, glycolysis, and H+ concentration were examined in eight subjects performing three 30-s bouts of maximal isokinetic cycling at 100 rpm. Bouts were separated by 4 min of rest, and muscle biopsies were obtained before and after bouts 2 and 3. Total work decreased from 20.5 +/- 0.7 kJ in bout 1 to 16.1 +/- 0.7 and 13.2 +/- 0.6 kJ in bouts 2 and 3. Glycogenolysis was 47.2 and 15.1 mmol glucosyl U/kg dry muscle during bouts 2 and 3, respectively. Lower accumulations of pathway intermediates in bout 3 confirmed a reduced glycolytic flux. In bout 3, the work done represented 82% of the work in bout 2, whereas glycogenolysis was only 32% of that in bout 2. Decreases in ATP and phosphocreatine contents were similar in the two bouts. Muscle [H+] increased from 195 +/- 12 to 274 +/- 19 nmol/l during bout 2, recovered to 226 +/- 8 nmol/l before bout 3, and increased to 315 +/- 24 nmol/l during bout 3. Muscle [H+] could not be predicted from lactate content, suggesting that ion fluxes are important in [H+] regulation in this exercise model. Low glycogenolysis in bout 3 may be due to an inhibitory effect of increased [H+] on glycogen phosphorylase activity. Alternately, reduced Ca2+ activation of fast-twitch fibers (including a possible H+ effect) may contribute to the low overall glycogenolysis. Total work in bout 3 is maintained by a greater reliance on slow-twitch fibers and oxidative metabolism.  相似文献

It is widely recognized that pollinators vary in their effectiveness in pollination mutualisms, due both to differences in flower–pollinator morphological fit as well as pollinator behaviour. However, pollination webs typically treat all interactions as equal, and we contend that this method may provide misleading results. Using empirical and theoretical data, we present the case study of a self-incompatible herb in which the number of flowers visited by a pollinator cannot be used as a surrogate for the total effect of a pollinator on a plant due to differences in per-visit effectiveness at producing seeds. In self-incompatible species, the relationship between interaction frequency and per-interaction effect may become increasingly negative as more flowers per plant are visited due to geitonogamous pollen transfer. We found that pollinators making longer bouts (i.e. visiting more flowers per plant visit) had an overall higher pollination success per bout. However, per-interaction effects tended to decrease as the bout progressed, particularly for pollinators that cause higher pollen deposition. Since the same interaction frequency may result from different combinations of number of bouts (plant visits) and bout length (flowers visited/bout), pollinators making repeatedly shorter bouts may contribute more to plant reproduction for the same number of flowers visited. Consequently, the magnitude of the differences in number of interactions of different insect types may be overridden by the magnitude of the differences in effectiveness as pollinators, even if the same pollinators consistently interact more frequently. We discuss two predictions regarding the validity of using interaction frequency as a surrogate for plant seed production (as a measure of total effect), depending on the degree of self-compatibility, plant size and floral display. We suggest that the role of interaction frequency must be tested for different species, environments, and across wider scales to validate its use as a surrogate for total effect in plant–pollinator networks.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Many passerine species exhibit a "dawn chorus"—a bout of intense singing activity before or at dawn, but our understanding of this phenomenon is poor. Tyrant flycatchers (Tyrannidae) exhibit pronounced daily bouts of dawn singing. I documented this behavior in several populations of Buff-breasted Flycatchers ( Empidonax fulvifrons ) in Arizona, tape recording >30,000 songs of 23 individuals during dawn singing. Individual males sang a dawn bout each morning, even during breeding phases when daytime song was almost completely absent. Dawn bouts began 5–10 min before local civil twilight and continued for 25–30 min. Each male possessed two song types delivered at high rates during dawn singing (four times the rate during sustained daytime singing). Song rate varied significantly over the course of dawn bouts, increasing to 55 songs / min at mid-bout, then declining to the end of the bout. Type 2 songs comprised about 30% of songs during dawn singing, and decreased significantly in proportion during the final 10 min of the bout. Songs of the two types were delivered in a nonrandom fashion. Males sang at locations near territory boundaries and pairs of neighbors engaged in counter-singing from the same locations each morning. A number of dawn singing bouts ended with attempted or successful copulations. These observations are consistent with the social dynamics hypothesis for the functional significance of dawn singing in this species.  相似文献
